EDITORIAL & FEATURES
Hello Ely!
Welcome to our March/April magazine! The diary is picking up as we begin to emerge from the winter. Spare a thought for the market traders over recent weeks, goodness what storms! Let’s hope the worst of it is over now. In this issue we bring you the usual mix of events and updates on local happenings. Mayor Mike Rouse has been as busy as ever despite a knee injury in February and we bring you more info about the various City Council operations via their regular article (page 14-15) A big welcome to our new advertisers who are supporting the magazine. As I say almost every issue, please tell them you saw them here as it really helps them know the magazine is working and keeps them coming back to support us. It is the start of the nomination season for the Ely Hero awards (see page 34) and we are thrilled to be helping with the stage and lighting side of things. This is a change from sponsoring a category which we have done in previous years.

We strive to be as inclusive and diverse as possible so would love to hear from any groups that feel underrepresented so we can highlight your information and shine a spotlight on how you enrich our Ely life, so do get in touch. A LIFE ON OUR PLANET AT ELY CINEMA
Live From the World Premiere - David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet at Ely Cinema Thu 16th Apr 2020, 7.15pm. One man has seen more of the natural world than any other. This unique feature documentary is his witness statement. In his 93 years, David Attenborough has visited every continent on the globe, exploring the wild places of our planet and documenting the living world in all its variety and wonder. Now, for the first time he reflects upon both the defining moments of his lifetime as a naturalist and the devastating changes he has seen. Honest, revealing and urgent, the programme is a powerful first-hand account of humanity’s impact on nature and a message of hope for future generations. The film will be followed by a Q&A with David Attenborough live from the World Premiere at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. Book tickets online via babylonarts.org.uk, call the box office on 01353 616991 or pop into Babylon Gallery (open Tues to Sun, 12pm to 4pm).

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update
RECREATION AND CEMETERY COMMITTEE This Committee, usually known simply as ‘Rec and Cem’ is responsible, first, for the upkeep and development of a number of recreation and play areas to be found within the civic parish. These are located at High Barns, Willow Walk, St John’s Road, The Park, Columbine Road, the Paradise Play Area and in both Prickwillow and Stuntney. Over the years equipment at these sites has been improved and extended and caters for a wide age range. At St John’s
Road, for example there is a skate park and some recently installed adult gym equipment. All the play areas are regularly monitored and maintained to a high standard by the Council’s estates team. The Committee is always looking for ways to improve its recreation facilities and is more than open to comments and suggestions from members of the public. Rec and Cem’s other responsibility is the City’s cemetery, a 13-acre site in use since 1856 and the resting pace of some 16,000 former residents of Ely. The Committee oversees the administration of burials but is also responsible for the upkeep of both the grounds and the fine Victorian chapel buildings. The general aim has always been to ensure that the cemetery remains a place of “privacy, beauty and tranquillity” and this has been achieved by careful landscaping, the development of hedges and an on-going programme of planting bulbs and attractive
14 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com 14
shrubs. Visitors to the cemetery have often remarked that it is like a large garden with different areas having their own particular ‘feel’. It is also a really pleasant place for a short, peaceful walk. Two important projects have recently been undertaken by the Committee. The first, to enlarge the area available for burials by incorporating land owned by the Council and adjoining High Barns into the cemetery proper will ensure that the present site can be used for at least another twenty years. The second, to establish a Friends of Ely Cemetery group has been undertaken so that members of the public might be more involved in both practical and historical aspects of the cemetery. Members are currently working on the inputting of data, helping with some gardening and the care of graves and are hoping to catalogue memorials and their inscriptions. It is also hoped that the Friends will help develop family history projects related
to those buried in the cemetery and also take an interest in further development of the site in the context of its natural environment. Needless to say, both the Committee and the Friends would be delighted to hear from people who would like to be involved with their projects and initial enquiries can be made to the committee’s chairman at chris.phillips@cityofelycouncil.org.uk
THE COUNCIL OFFERS SHARED EQUITY HOUSING. The Council has 54 properties at Larkfield Road and Ramsey Road, Ely. Every property has gas central heating, double glazing and a fully fitted kitchen with front and rear gardens and allocated two car parking spaces. Over the years many properties have been updated by current owners.
THE GRANT APPLICATION SCHEME. Applications for under £2,000 are invited from voluntary groups and organisations (but not individuals) and these are considered in September. The deadline for applications this year is 10.00 am Thursday 27th August 2020. If you are interested in applying, the criteria and application form can be downloaded from the website. If you want to apply for over £1,000, you will need to also include a copy of your organisation’s most recent audited accounts or business plan.
HOW IT WORKS There is a waiting list of prospective house owners held at the Council offices. If you wished to apply to join the list then complete the form on our website. Once the application has been assessed, you will then be informed whether or not you have been accepted onto the waiting list. Existing owners of houses notify the Council when they wish to sell their properties. The seller then arranges for the property to be valued by 2 local estate agents. The property is offered to prospective purchasers on the list who are in a position to purchase. For more information please contact Sarah Jay, Deputy Clerk at the Council by calling in, telephoning 01353 661047 or emailing on: sarah.jay@cityofelycouncil.org.uk

THE TACKLE SHOP ELY We were delighted to pop in on Ken Shipp this month. He has recently opened the great little fishing tackle shop above INTERIORS OF ELY in Chequer Lane.
He is very proud to stock FFS Lures and McFluffchucker predator lures which have been packaged especially for the Ely shop. As well as these he stocks a full range of more everyday fishing bait, lures, rods, reels and other fishing paraphernalia. Alongside the new equipment, Ken stocks quite a few (very reasonably priced) second hand rods and is happy to guide you towards what you need. Pop in to INTERIORS and have a look next time you are in Ely. Open Thursday - Saturday every week.

Forest School sessions with trained practitioners
Spring Meadow Infant and Nursery School ...a warm welcome awaits you The lives of famous artists have long been considered ideal subjects for film biopics. Many great artists live tortured lives, which makes for good drama, but the best of these films can teach us something about the art itself as well as the people who create it. They explore the relationship between art and the viewer and the historical and political context in which artists work. The course will look at a number of films depicting the life and work of artists from different perspectives. Venue: Ely Library, starts Wednesday 22 April 2020 10.00am -12pm The course fee is £40 but come along to the first session for free and sign up afterwards! For more information, contact: Anne at:

COMPARING GOWNS AT THE CATHEDRAL EXHIBITION EARLIER IN FEBRUARY!
MIKE ROUSE MAYOR OF ELY After the frenetic activity before Christmas, it has been a very quiet beginning to the new decade as far as the office of mayor is concerned. It has given me time to reflect.
to the city and fens as a folk music performer, writer and part of the education programme at Ely Museum. Countless children, along with me, learnt so much from this unassuming, hugely talented man.
On the 6th December we said farewell at a lovely family service in St Mary’s Church to four times former mayoress, Pat Hobbs. Pat was the quiet, unassuming wife who supported Richard, not just as Mayor but with all his council work and the offices he held. Anyone who holds public office knows how important it is to have the support or partners, family and friends, but it does place a burden on them, often unrealised outside their immediate circle.
On the 8th May, the city will mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. That too will be a time of reflection, but also of celebration.
In January Edward Scott Pillow died at the age of 92. From 1997-8 he served as mayor, supported by his wife June, who predeceased him. Scotty was ex-RAF and for many years was parade marshal on Remembrance Sunday. He was a dedicated, dignified man who, with his wife June, served the city well. We are lucky to live in such an historic city, but it is us, the people who live here, who can make it a great place in so many different ways, like John Crowe who also died in January. He never served as a councillor, but made an enormous contribution

Eel Day, with a World War Two theme, will be held on the Friday and afterwards at the conclusion of cathedral evensong around 6.30 we will be presenting the Freedom of the City to our Air Cadets and Army Cadets in a short ceremony on Palace Green. We are fortunate in Ely in having some fine cadets and I congratulate them, their instructors and their supportive parents and carers and it is fitting that the City Council should honour them. Everyone is welcome to come and support them and afterwards there will be a special cry for the day and the bells of St Mary’s will ring as part of a national commemoration.

JOHN CROWE
The Re-imagine Resource Centre at Witchford opened its doors once again after the New Year break on 19th February. It was officially opened, speeches, ribbon cutting and all, on Friday 14th. Elyi were in attendance and Mrs Julie Spence, as the Queen’s representative as Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, performed the ceremony. It was the official unveiling of the Community Crafting Kitchen. This represented the realisation of a dream for manager and Ely Hero, Ruth Marley. The funding for a kitchen was procured with the help of the John Lewis foundation who are longstanding supporters of the venture and it is really fun to see Edgar the Dragon from the John Lewis Christmas commercial has taken up permanent residence in the shop, ready to greet you when you enter. The new facilities will allow the centre to extend its cooking and crafting workshops, spreading the message of recycling, re-using and reducing our individual and collective impact on the planet. ADVICE FROM CAMBS FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE
CENSUS OF RURAL ENGLAND’S VILLAGE AND COMMUNITY HALLS NOW LIVE Following on from a highly successful Village Halls’ Week that involved over 700 village halls, actively engaged 18 MPs and attracted coverage from Countryfile, national Newspapers and resulted in #villagehallsweek trending on Twitter, ACRE has launched a national survey of village halls, following up on the last survey carried out 10 years ago. The Survey is being distributed to 10,000 village halls across England by the ACRE Network members and is a crucial piece of work. ACRE will use the data to help secure funding for halls, to ensure that advice and information adapts to the challenges facing volunteer hall committees and that the ACRE Network can continue to provide the very best support. ACRE wants to encourage all kinds of community buildings that provide facilities for their communities to take part. Not just traditional village halls but community centres, sports pavilions, church halls, churches providing community use, community centres, Miners Welfare Institutes, WI halls and community pubs providing meeting rooms. Launching the survey locally, Cambridgeshire ACRE’s Chief Executive, Kirsten Bennett said: ”Whilst it’s essential for us to have the hard data as evidence to support our work, the information collected will paint a picture of the social and economic impact on communities of having a hall in their community and it provides a detailed look at social change over time. We are extremely grateful to all the hall committees that give their time to manage village halls and will take the time to complete this survey” To find out more the Survey, visit its dedicated page on the ACRE website: https://acre. org.uk/our-work/national-village-andcommunity-hall-survey

Another thought, which may enable you to help save a life – download onto your ‘phone, or other device, the app “what3words”. Many people have already done this, putting them in a position to direct CFRS or any other emergency service, including EAAA, right to the spot. Amazing ! CITY OF ELY FLOWER CLUB 50 YEARS HONOUR
At our Open Evening on 5th December, 2019 our Club member Susan Piper was presented with a "NAFAS 50 Years Continuous Service Certificate" by Area Chairman of EoE, Lesley Fairman. Susan was formerly a member of Littleport & District Flower Club and has been a member of the City of Ely Flower Club since and its formation in 1972. She served as President from 1983-1986 and Assistant Secretary for a number of years. The Committee & Members of the City of Ely Flower Club also wished to honour Susan for her long service and she was made an Honorary Member of the Club. Susan was thrilled to receive these awards and thanked everyone.
Fancy having a go yourself? Well, you are certainly welcome to do so, under the expert eye and guidance of some of our senior and knowledgeable members. The hall will be set up with a number of lathes, and there’s usually a pyrography table too, so there’s ample opportunity to see demonstrations or have a “turn”. Children are welcome, provided they are accompanied by an adult, and can even have a go themselves with parental consent. The event has been open to the public since 2013. It’s a great way to showcase woodturning and it is, indeed, “hands-on”. So do come along and see what lovely things can be turned from wood! We look forward to meeting you!

WILDSPACE
THE RIVERSIDE MEADOW
Many residents of Ely, especially dog walkers and joggers, will be familiar with the riverside walk that takes them past the flood meadow between the railway line and the River Great Ouse. The meadow is an important refuge for snipe, lapwings, teal, gadwall, moorhens and other water birds. Unfortunately the popularity of the walk makes the meadow vulnerable to disturbance by walkers and dogs. In 2011, to protect the site’s wildlife, Ely Wildspace volunteers in co-operation with Natural England and the farmer restored the hedge and erected fencing between the meadow and the riverside footpath. Signs placed by Ely Wildspace ask the public to stay on the footpath and keep dogs off the meadow. Ely Wildspace continues to monitor the wildlife of the meadow and also maintains the hedge and fence as an effective barrier against disturbance.
KINGFISHER NEST SITES CREATED
Last year Ely Wildspace reported on the scheme to provide kingfisher nesting tunnels in the Roswell Pits area, in memory of Sailing Club member Jill Sallis. In January, two locations were selected at the Environment Agency depot where nearby a pair of kingfishers has regularly nested within the steel sheet piles. With practical support from the Environment Agency and the Middle Level Commissioners, experts Cliff Carson and Peter Beckenham have drilled holes through the piling and hand-augured tunnels into the backfill. These new tunnels it is hoped will create opportunities for additional kingfishers to nest. If you want to get involved in Ely Wildspace activities or find out more about upcoming Wildspace events visit www.elywildspace.org.uk. 48 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com 48

Following David Read’s popular autumn course, Britain in Film, we welcome him back for a short course: PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A FILM ICON. The lives of famous artists have long been considered ideal subjects for film biopics, since they are often full of crisis, drama, inspiration, and beauty. Many great artists lived tortured lives, which make for good drama, but the best of these films can teach us about the art itself as well as the people who create it. They explore the
relationship between art and the viewer as well as the historical and political context in which artists work. The course will look at a number of films depicting the life and work of artists from different perspectives. The 5 week course begins on Wednesday 22nd April at Ely library 10:00am12pm. The course fee is £40 but come along to the first session free then sign up! For further info contact Anne at: awarham575@btinternet.com

SOHAM'S 4TH REPAIR CAFÉ 15th March 2020 10-4PM SOHAM LIBRARY, CLAY STREET
Bring along your broken item, be it a kettle, torn jeans or even a smashed phone screen (with a replacement screen of course!) - our experienced repairers will try their best to help give it a new lease of life. We are also including a community clothes and toy swap - more information below. There will be plenty of cake and tea for sale in our pop up café to keep everyone refreshed. We welcome all items within reason (electronics, small kitchen appliances, clothing, toys, costume jewellery etc) as long as it can safely sit on a standard table in the library. If you can give us some advance notice on what you might bring and what the problem is then it will help our repairers to be prepared and maybe even advise if you could bring a spare part along to be fitted on the day. Unfortunately we are currently unable to cater for bicycles and outdoor items (e.g. powered garden tools) If you have any queries and potential items to repair then please ask away - we politely request only one item per person to make things fair, but if we have time and you can join the queue again we will take a look. We ask all repairees to read and sign our repair agreement as we are all volunteers. Donations for repair time are more than welcome! We have a query form https://forms.gle/ Vp6T9RWWnmVHVZVf7 to help us to collate any potential repairs so please do complete this if you have an item to bring along - preregistered items will take priority over on-theday walk-ins.
