 @elyimagazine  /elyimagazine www.elyimagazine.com FIND US BY POST The Old Chapel, Butchers Row, Ely, Cambs, CB7 4NA Deadline for the APRIL 2018 issue is 10th MARCH 2018

It is great to be back with you again with this March issue, bringing you articles from local groups and businesses. After spending hours in front of my Mac here at Elyi HQ, it’s always such a delight to send our ‘baby’ off into the world and onto your doormats. Thanks to the fantastic support of our advertisers we have been able to produce our full edition in print this month and so both the hard and online copies will be identical containing all the community events and info. Don’t forget to let any advertiser you call know that you saw them here! This month we had a great time meeting some of the lovely people who volunteer at Ely Cathedral. They do admin to guiding and everything in between. If you want to join the 350 strong team then why not attend their info evening on the 8th of March? As a way to spend your free time, it sure beats absent-mindedly scrolling through Facebook pictures of your friends’ cats and attempts at baking... You may recently have come across something called Ely Rocks. It’s where painted rocks are hidden round the city for others to find. Now, don’t worry. Like me, you may have initially approached the idea with a bit of confusion… maybe been a bit cynical…maybe even thought you’d rather spend time scrolling through Facebook pictures of your friends’ cats and attempts at baking… but hear me out - it’s wonderful! To cure myself of my middle-aged scepticism, I spent some time finding out about the project and talking to friends out and about in Ely. I was very pleased to meet a lovely young man called Charlie who had found his first rock. Boy, the excitement! I must say that the penny dropped and I realised that the sense of fun, the creativity, the getting-your-wellies-on and treasure-hunting is really just all its about. Yes, you can raise awareness for something or get your business brand on facebook but at Charlie’s level it has brought motivation to explore our wonderful city. In fact, there’s no stopping me now. I have bought a bag of pebbles and a pack of non toxic, weatherproof paint. I won’t stop until all the pebbles in Ely are painted! Only joking, but hopefully I’ll have time to paint one before the April edition is due. Why not join me!

Richard Hobbs MAYOR OF ELY A shorter than usual entry this month (normal service will be resumed as soon as possible) Mayor, Richard Hobbs has been busy on your behalf, representing the City of Ely at numerous events around the area. On 8th February, Cllr Hobbs attended the Ely City College Careers Event where enthusiastic primary pupils were given a chance to learn about what they needed to achieve to realise their dreams of a career.

Showing his willingness to get his hands dirty, Richard will be calling for volunteers again, for another litter pick in April. Let’s make it the biggest turn out yet! He has also been in talks with the British Legion recently to arrange commemoration of the 100 yrs since the ending of WW1. This will be celebrated on the 15th July with youth groups from the city. The main event joining with the whole nation will be on St Mary’s Green at 7pm on 11th November. (01353 661016) for more info and to volunteer for the litter pick!

Witchford Sketchers’ Day

St Andrew’s Church, Witchford has planned a series of community events. In February there was an art day with Cary Outis and for March there is an event for businesses and charities to explain what they do. As part of a series of community events planned for an extension to the church in St Andrew’s Witchford, a drawing workshop with Cary Outis was held in the church hall. The participants enjoyed the morning and their feedback included ‘excellent tuition; he was very clear and inspiring.’ There was a sketchers’ competition as well. The 26 entries were displayed in the church and the winners were: First prize: a drawing of a horse by Tony Brown Second prize: three entrants came second: two by Sue Thompson (flowers and a man relaxing on a sofa) and a drawing of two ladies sitting on a bench by Don Beards. The first prize for the children’s section was the drawing of a kestrel by Harvey Stimpson. £65.50 was made for the church extension funds. 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

The next event to look forward to is the ‘What we do Supper’ on Thursday 8th March (not the 15th March as previously advertised) when during a two-course meal, there will be a number of ten-minute talks by people introducing their businesses or charities. The evening starts at 7.30 p.m. If you would like tickets or to speak at the event, contact rjwestwell@hotmail.com Tickets are also available from Witchford Post Office.

Leading Law Firm Opening in Ely With over 150 years of legal expertise, Fraser Dawbarns is bringing a complete range of professional services to Ely Business Park this Spring. The solicitors Fraser Dawbarns LLP are pleased to announce that they will be opening an office on the Cambridgeshire Business Park in Ely this Spring. They will be bringing with them the range of legal expertise and the client-focused approach which has made them one of the most successful and highly regarded firms in West Norfolk and North Cambridgeshire. Fraser Dawbarns is a firm which has advised families and businesses for generations. Its experience means it understands the needs and concerns of its clients and prides itself on providing high quality legal advice in a straightforward manner that clients understand and puts them at ease. Managing Partner Melinda Smith says “We are very excited at having the opportunity to become more directly involved with residents and businesses of Ely and the surrounding areas. We have been fortunate enough to have been included in various events which have taken place in Ely in the last year or so and are looking forward to becoming part of such a diverse and rapidly expanding community.” Fraser Dawbarns traces its history back to 1842 when James Edward Fraser opened his law firm. Dawbarns started practicing in 1885 and the two solicitors merged in 2008, shortly followed by another merger with Waterman Cheetham. Under a single banner, the three firms gained the capacity of a large firm but with the care and feel typically associated with smaller high-street solicitors. The 2017 Legal 500 review of the top legal firms in the country considers Fraser Dawbarns to be a ‘Leading Firm’ in seven practice areas including ‘Commercial Property’ and ‘Corporate and Commercial’ law. Fraser Dawbarns regularly feature in this review.

Their large Commercial team has wide ranging expertise encompassing the legal needs of partnerships and small businesses to multimillion pound acquisitions and renewable energy projects together with an agricultural team that assists their farming clients on issues ranging from acquisitions to succession planning. As well as providing legal services for businesses, Fraser Dawbarns has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in providing legal services for individuals with a high quality Residential Conveyancing department that offers a fixed-fee service designed to minimise the stress of buying your house, a Family Law department that advises on divorce, children and financial matters but also on post and prenuptial agreements and cohabitation agreements. The Probate department offers a comprehensive range of advice on Wills and Estates as well as Trusts, elderly care, Court of Protection matters and lifetime planning and the Civil law team is comprised of talented litigators that have frequently exceeded the expectations of both their private and commercial clients. Fraser Dawbarns are happy to discuss any issues that are affecting you, your family or your business before their Ely office opens.

Mikes’ Musings

Teacher, Author, Historian, Photographer, City Councillor and all round fount of knowledge, Mike Rouse shares with us a little of the history and culture of a life time spent in his beloved Ely.

OLIVER CROMWELL, HERO OR VILLAIN?

In 2011 to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the Ely Society, I wrote Oliver Cromwell, Lord of the Fens, to honour one of Ely’s most famous citizens. Not being a Cromwell expert, I wanted to write a simple biography that might be read by young people and those who just wanted to find out more about his life and his relationship with Ely and the fens. I had Reg Holmes’ research, published in 1975 as Cromwell’s Ely by the Ely Society, to draw on, and Oliver Cromwell House itself to help. I also consulted several other books and relevant websites. Despite all that I found there were many gaps in the narrative and so much not known about the man and his family despite him being one of the most famous Englishmen that ever lived. But I did my best and it was duly published. No one contacted me to say that I had got things wrong, but there were suggestions that there were errors and omissions. I like to try and get things right, so when the opportunity arose to reprint I decided to do a revised version. I am grateful to Cromwell authorities John Goldsmith and Professor John Morrill for providing me with corrections and suggested amendments, but they also posed questions

ElyiMagazine Magazine || www.elyimagazine.com www.elyimagazine.com 66 || Elyi

with which I struggled. There is no doubt that the event that changed Cromwell’s life forever was when he moved to Ely in 1636 having inherited from his uncle, Thomas Steward of Stuntney Hall, the position as collector of the cathedral tithes. In 1640 he was elected as MP for Cambridge and despite being the subject of Andrew Barclay’s Electing Cromwell, no one is entirely clear how he was chosen. What I did learn from all Andrew Barclay’s research, much of it looking at Reg Holmes’s earlier research, is the importance of Thomas Parsons’ Charity in Ely, the members of which acted rather like a town corporation. Professor Martyn Bennett’s Cromwell at War reinforced my own opinion that perhaps Cromwell’s greatest achievement was learning to be a soldier in his early 40s and becoming one of history’s great military commanders. Cromwell did not abolish Christmas, although he did not restore it either when he was Lord Protector, and I leave readers again to decide how much he was a hero or a villain. Have I got it right this time in this fully revised book? It would be lovely to think so, but one thing I have learnt is that it is very difficult to write a simple book about a complicated person. LUCY FRAZER MP

Email: lucy.frazer.mp@parliament.uk In the latest reshuffle South East Cambridgeshire MP, Lucy Frazer, was delighted to be appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice. In her new role Lucy looks forward to working in a department that supports people when they are often most in need – helping victims and those needing access to the courts and ensuring offenders receive appropriate punishment but are also rehabilitated. Lucy will also be involved in securing the future of the UK’s thriving legal services industry as we leave the EU. She told ElyI, “I am thrilled at this new opportunity alongside my ongoing work for Cambridgeshire. It’s been a busy start to the year and in recent weeks I met with local firefighters at Ely Fire Station and also with police at Ely police station to further develop our

relationship to build a safer community. I enjoyed a visit to Corkers Crisps to see their growing business and hear about their exciting plans for the future and I continue to be very engaged on the numerous infrastructure projects and proposals. “I would like to make Elyi readers aware of a petition that I have set up on my website to gather local support for improving the A10. A recent report published by the Greater Cambridge Partnership looked into various different approaches to future-proofing the A10 from Cambridge to north of Ely, recommending a comprehensive package of measures over the short, medium, and long term. The Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, James Palmer, along with me and our committed district councillors, will

now work closely with key stakeholders to drive these proposals forward. In order for any recommendations to be implemented, however, we need to obtain Government funding. This is the purpose of my petition and I would urge anyone who wants to show their support for this to go to my website www.lucyfrazer.org. uk/campaigns and click on the petition to add their name. “In addition I’ve been involved in meetings, discussions and correspondence on the A1307 and the Ely Area Improvements Programme, in so far as it affects Queen Adelaide, and have been pleased to accompany two Secretaries of State on visits to the constituency, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling and the new Education Secretary Damian Hinds, continuing to ensure our concerns are heard at the highest level.

I am not one of them sort! It is a phrase we often hear from new clients – “I’m not one of them sort to make a claim.” Our job is to listen to our clients and help them decide if their grievance or potential claim is one that is worthwhile taking forward. By the time most people speak to us they have mulled over what happened and need someone from outside who can look at all the facts objectively and professionally.

It is about being listened to and being able to understand why an accident happened or mistake was made. Our work is very varied and claims can take many different forms. It differs from person to person. It might be that someone has a minor bump in a car, a bit of an ache and inconvenience but they want some compensation to make up for the pain and the hassle of what has happened. Then there are more significant injuries with an added financial element, say lost pay for a month or so. That in itself can be crippling and it can take months or years to financially recover. At the far end of the scale are those whose life changes so they can no longer work or enjoy life to the full, or they die and their family is left to pick up the pieces without their presence or financial support.

Gwyn Andrews and Shane Markham of Bentley Solicitors

they are. You are entitled to seek compensation for injury or loss from others if they are in the wrong. When something does happen, you want a skilled professional who can represent your interests and guide you through the process. At our initial meeting we will tell you if you have a good enough case which is why we offer a no win no fee contract. If you think you have a claim give us a call and if we can help you we will. The Volunteers at Ely Cathedral Ely Cathedral is a diverse community whose members participate in its mission and ministry in a host of ways. Behind this magnificent building which we so richly enjoy, there is an army of more than 350 volunteers, who play a crucial part in the day to day life of the Cathedral and without whom it would be unable to function. We spent a most enjoyable morning last month hearing the personal stories and experiences behind some of the volunteer team.

Appropriately, we spoke first to Christopher and Lesley who are welcomers. They are the first faces people see. Chris said, ” The first question is usually where the loos are but I have been asked where to get the best sausages! We are here to be a friendly face and make them feel at home.” Lesley became involved when she arrived here from Scotland. “I thought it would be a great way to get to know people, and it was” she says. Like most of the welcoming team, Lesley volunteers for several shifts a week and really enjoys being of help to others.

Sally Rowland and Joan Cameron co-ordinate the welcoming team. Sally explains, “We get a lot of local visitors who come for all different reasons. There are the regulars on market days and since the free pass scheme now includes all of CB6 and CB7, we are constantly trying to spread the word that you can come here without having to pay. We want people to realise they can come. It’s their Cathedral” We also spoke to Sheila Broad who has completed the formal training to become a Cathedral guide. It’s a role that takes several months of study culminating in an exam and mentoring period before being allowed loose on the public and it is a role Sheila relishes, “I have always been interested in the history of the places I live, so becoming a guide was a very natural way for me to serve.” Finally, I followed peels of laughter to find the ladies from

12 12 || Elyi ElyiMagazine Magazine || www.elyimagazine.com

the Flower Guild. They are part of an enormous team of around 90 flower arrangers who decorate the building throughtout the year. They love a good wedding! and count themselves very lucky if one comes up when they are down on the rota. They are a devoted bunch and although the flowers are ordered and prepared for them ready for arranging, they often plan their own gardens at home around foliage that might be needed during the year. Thank you Ely Cathedral for having us to visit, it was a joy to hear the different volunteers talk so enthusiastically about what they do. If you would like to find out more, there is a chance to MEET THE VOLUNTEER TEAM on 8th March 2018, 6.30pm at the Cathedral. In July 2017, Ely became host to Cambridgeshire's first Happy Cafe. It launched with a visit from renowned author and mental health campaigner Rachel Kelly, followed by the first of what are now regular Happy Cafe mornings at Julia's Tearooms on the High Street, held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. The Happy Cafe concept began in 2014 and there are now nearly 75 venues worldwide. The aim of them is simple, yet far-reaching: to be a friendly and welcoming place to meet other people with a shared interest in promoting happiness and wellbeing. They have been created by supporters of the charity Action for Happiness which works to create a happier world, by giving people the resources and opportunity to improve their own wellbeing and ultimately that of their families, workplaces, schools and wider community. To this end they have produced 10 Keys to Happier Living which are the result of scientific research

‘I’ve grown taller, increased flexibility, lost weight & my BMI has reduced. I’ve lost 19cm overall!’

into wellbeing and these are the main focus for discussion at Happy Cafe mornings. So far subjects covered include building resilience, developing personal strengths, using a growth mindset, practising gratitude and delivering acts of kindness. The sessions provide lively discussion in a friendly, encouraging and supportive space and new participants are always welcome. For the future, Happy Cafe volunteers are committed to a sustainable presence in Ely and in addition to our regular Wednesday morning meetings we have a vision to run individual workshops and an evening Happy Cafe. An 8 week Exploring What Matters course with resources provided by Action for Happiness is also being delivered for the first time in April at the Cathedral Conference Centre and the hope is this may become at least an annual event. Hedgehog Habitats Downham Parish Conservation Group and Hebbard’s Hedgehog Hotel in Little Downham are looking for 20 volunteer families to adopt and care for rehabilitated

“Hedgehog Habitats” Sanctuary Housing.

hedgehogs as part of the supported by

project

The Hedgehogs Habitats project is a community based wildlife release programme starting in Spring. Overwintering hedgehogs from rescue centre Hebbard’s Hedgehog Hotel in Little Downham, who are unable to be returned to their original homes after rehabilitation, will be released to three woodland sites around Little Downham village. Volunteer families are needed to adopt a hedgehog house, visit the site weekly to check up on its prickly occupant and record conditions of the house, its environment, signs of disturbance or illness, put out food and water and weigh the hedgehogs in the Autumn before hibernation. Monthly meetings with project coordinators will also be required to discuss results. “Hedgehogs really need our help”, says Carol Hebbard from Hebbard’s Hedgehog Hotel. “We are really excited about this project which will help boost the local hedgehog population, and let families from the local community get involved and develop new skills” Full training will be given to volunteer families and a year’s commitment to this important project is required. Simon Rudkin, Sanctuary’s Area Manager – Housing said: “This is an important project that allows people to get involved in helping to make a difference for local wildlife.” If your family would like to get involved then please contact Carol Hebbard on 01353 698338 or via the Hebbard’s Hedgehog Hotel Facebook page. This project was part-funded by Sanctuary’s Grand Ideas Fund, which is currently accepting applications from community projects benefiting Sanctuary residents and their communities. To find out more about the fund, please call 01905 335411 or email community@sanctuaryhousing.co.uk or visit www.sanctuary-housing. co.uk/about-the-grand-ideas-fund

ELY HERO AWARDS 2018 Last year was Ely’s inaugural community event – Ely Hero Awards and local Drain Care and Repair Company, Metro Rod (Cambridge), based in the city is very proud to bring back the event this year together with their media partner The Ely Standard, part of The Archant Group of Newspapers and very kindly supported by The Elyi Magazine. The search is on from the 5th of March for individuals to nominate their rather special “Hero” who lives or works in Ely and the surrounding villages within a 10-mile radius. Our judges will shortlist 3 nominations and these finalists will be invited to the exclusive Award Ceremony at The Maltings on June 25th where the winner of each category will be announced and crowned. So many of Ely’s local businesses pledged support, and without them this event would not be possible. These are, along with Metro Rod (Cambridge); Grovemere, Elyi Magazine, Ely Gin, Life Fitness, Thorlabs, Crown Garage Honda, Xpert Resourcing, Ely Standard, Kings School, Lovewell Blake, Milton Executive Cars and Platinum Properties. Local company Infiniti Graphics has expertly designed the fabulous brand logo, a new look website and produces all the promotional materials. Local Virtual Assistant, Sadie Finch kindly provides administration assistance and collates all the nominations. Both these businesses provide invaluable organisational support and make up the Ely Hero Awards Team. Metro Rod (Cambridge) said; “Last year we were overwhelmed by the success of this event and the very generous support of local business was incredible. The event shone a light on our fabulous local heroes.” Nominations can be made via the website: www.elyheroawards.org.uk. To keep updated

Song Writing Workshops Back in 1988, a big time record man thought it would be interesting to bring a Texan to London to spend a week writing songs with one of his artists. That original collaboration resulted in not only the critically acclaimed album, Boo Hewerdine and Darden Smith – Evidence, but more than that, it started a 30year collaboration and friendship. Though their solo careers have gone different directions, the one constant has remained their passion for the craft of songwriting.

Many past participants keep working together long after the workshop has ended, writing songs and singing on each other’s projects.

Now, Boo and Darden come together several times a year to lead songwriting workshops. They want to pass along some of the lessons, tricks and processes they’ve learned over their many years in the business, hoping they can help other writers from all levels of expertise write better songs.

Boo and Darden have both built lives based on songs. Their courses are designed to give you the tools to do the same, but not take thirty years to make it happen!

TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE: Structure and Verse / Chorus / Bridge Clarity in lyric The importance of meter and rhyme scheme The power of telling the truth in lyric using simple language Collaboration Writing from your life and The importance of telling your story Creating writing projects for yourself The habits of a successful writing life Recognizing and building on your strengths as a writer

2018 Dates: May 21-25; Moniack Mhor; Beauly, wInvernesshire June 4-8; Halsway Manor; Taunton, Somerset To find out more please send us an email at: audreyripleymusic@icloud.com

Boo and Darden take time during the week to sit one-on-one with each participant, helping to identify goals and create a path to success for their writing. That will look different for each student. To some it might be a roadmap to recording an album, or steps to doing more shows, making it a career. Others want to rewaken their creative energies, make a life more based around music. For many, it’s simply to become a better writer, to finish more songs. At the end of the week, each participant records at least one song on-site with a professional engineer. The highlight of final evening is a listening party of songs written during the week. Through a week of collaboration, group meals, evenings spent passing around songs, a sense of community is created.

Ely Choral Society Ely Choral Society will perform Bach’s St. John Passion in Ely Cathedral on Saturday 24th March 2018 at 7:30 pm. This promises to be a very special performance sung in English and taking full advantage of the wonderful acoustic of the Nave of the Cathedral. Bach’s passion settings are among the supreme choral achievements of any age. His St John Passion is an intimate and deeply expressive telling of Christ’s persecution and crucifixion. Rogers Covey-Crump is well-known as a leading exponent of the role of Evangelist and he is joined by a group of young singers, all forging notable careers as opera and oratorio soloists. The performance is accompanied by an orchestra of period instruments provided by the Chameleon Arts Baroque Orchestra and will be conducted by Andrew Parnell. Whilst the St John Passion is mostly performed in German, this performance will be in a traditional English translation so that the audience can directly follow the drama. ART OPPOSITES -17th March - 8th April DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO PAINTING IN OILS

Two artists who have known each other for many years are having an exhibition together at the Babylon Gallery from 17th March – 8th April. Both use oil paint, but their approach to how they work is very different Ely artist, Ted Coney uses his family as the theme of all his work and each piece is worked out over a period of two years before he starts on the canvas. During that time he will make observational drawings from life and also collect objects, photographs and ephemera to inform his ideas. He will then work in his studio on small preliminary canvases to test out how he is going to paint the final picture. 44 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Francis Jeans, who lives in Cambridge, prefers to work directly from his chosen subject matter and this is often in a busy London location where he paints outside cafes, shops and theatres, incorporating reflections of the surrounding streets and people. He works in all weathers and times of day, accepting that the movement of figures and changes of light that go with working in this way. During the exhibition, both artists will be around in the gallery at weekends to talk about their work. AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL - ELY BRANCH The Ely branch of Amnesty International was set up about eight years ago. We are a friendly group of activists who meet once a month at St Peter’s House on Broad Street to plan campaigns and lobby on behalf of prisoners of conscience around the world. They include the Saudi Arabian blogger Raif Badawi and the American Jaqueline Montanez, who was given a life sentence without parole at the age of 15.

Peter Pringle have been among our lecturers. For several years, we have also brought musicians from Ronnie Scott’s to Ely for a very popular fundraising afternoon of summer jazz. New members are warmly welcomed. We love to hear new ideas and welcome contributions, be they large or small, as we would not only like to continue holding our regular events in 2018, but also to expand our activities and actions.

In this country our rights and freedoms are enshrined in the Human Rights Act and it is easy to take them for granted, but in many countries posting criticism of your government on Facebook or practising your non-state sanctioned religion or trying to set up a new political party can result in people being arrested or facing trial for sedition or treason. We’re keen to spread the human rights message around East Cambridgeshire, so we organise film nights at the Old Palace, exhibitions in Ely library, Ted Talk-style nights at the Babylon Gallery and an annual lecture at the Cathedral. Guest speakers as diverse as Hostage UK’s Terry Waite and antideath penalty campaigners Sunny Jacobs and
