Hello Ely! I am so pleased to be bringing you this edition of the Elyi. It comes with best wishes from the whole team. What a tough time it is for everyone! Thank you for purchasing this edition. We didn’t have enough funding to produce the whole magazine due to these tough times but we felt it was really important to produce a print version that would reach everyone - even those not online. We have worked really hard towards a safe delivery, taking advice from environmental health and adhering to strict procedures to reduce any risk to you or our team of distributors and the nine thousand print editions (pages 1-32) will be delivered in Ely from this weekend. The funds raised with this fuller online version will go to support The Ely Hero Awards when they happen later in the year. It has been sad to see the Ely calendar of festivals and events disappear before our eyes but we know its the best thing for the whole community if we all stay home and beat this thing! As well as the very obvious hardships that the Covid-19 crisis has brought, there are also many positives to celebrate here in our amazing city; Ely businesses have rallied in support of local charities, Ely College, The King’s School and several local individuals have been making PPE for NHS workers; People are sewing, cooking, shopping and even singing in support of their neighbours. Thank you for purchasing this edition. I hope you enjoy reading the extra content. All the best! Bridgetxx

ambridgeshire Workplace Chaplaincy has recognised a need for a helpline, particularly for the many self employed who are finding life extremely difficult at the moment. The day to day adjustments that need to be made are very stressful which when combined with the significant reduction and for many the complete lack of income will be causing extreme levels of stress. As there are many sources of practical and financial help available, our helpline will offer a listening ear and emotional support only. The service started earlier in April and is available during the hours of 9-5 Monday to Friday.
O

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update
City of Ely Council Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, Cambs CB7 4EG Phone: 01353 661016 Fax: 01353 667057
A MESSAGE FROM CLLR MIKE ROUSE, RIGHT WORSHIPFUL MAYOR OF ELY AND CHAIR OF COUNCIL ‘I’m proud of the way the City Council, staff and members, has responded to the present crisis. All of us have had to find new ways of working and communicating, several while not leaving our houses. I’d like to thank everyone for their efforts and the citizens of Ely for their understanding and support. Please follow the government advice. If you are alone there is support available so don’t be afraid to ask. Stay safe, stay strong and we will come through this.’
DAY TO DAY OPERATION OF THE COUNCIL The City of Ely Council continues to function to the best of its ability during these very difficult times. Following guidance from the Government the Council has closed its office at Sessions House, Lynn Road; the Maltings and Oliver Cromwell House. However, a high majority of staff are working from home to ensure the Council continues to function and assist parishioners. Officers from Sessions House are able to deal with queries or concerns from parishioners, either by email or telephone messages. If you need to contact the Council, please in the first instance email info@cityofelycouncil.org. uk. If you are unable to email you can call 01353 661016. Officers are visiting the office on a regular basis to retrieve messages and will respond to you as soon as possible. Due to legislation changes, we are now able to recommence with Full Council meetings and Committee meetings. These will however be virtual meetings, due to the requirements for social distancing and will be held via Zoom. The Council’s website is regularly updated and all agendas and papers for these meetings will be available on the website. A link to enable members of the public to attend these meetings, if they wish to do so, will also be published on the City of Ely Council website: https://www.cityofelycouncil.org.uk/
WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY The Council through Visit Ely are very much involved with the Facebook group Ely Community Covid-19 Mutual Aid Group and the East Cambridgeshire Community Hub working to support residents. Our City Centre Ranger has been working as the connection between the mutual aid group, ECDC, CCC and as a representative of City Council. Helping with any problems, unusual requests and urgent requests. She is also responsible for acting as a gobetween/middle man in communication between the various bodies and the community group. The telephone number for Ely’s City Centre Ranger is 07719 980502
THE ESTATES TEAM The Estates Team are working extremely diligently each day to undertake their various duties, whilst maintaining social distancing. These include maintaining the cemetery at Beech Lane, administering the funerals whilst also continuing to undertake inspections and maintenance of all of the recreational areas and Council owned property. Every week Sessions House, The Maltings and Oliver Cromwell’s House are checked together with all the Council’s play areas, ensuring they all remain safe and secure for when they all re-open for everyone to enjoy.
VISIT ELY / OLIVER CROMWELL’S HOUSE AND ELY’S TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE Ely’s Tourism and Town Centre Manager and team have been very busy keeping the community engaged with various resources and ‘fun things to do’ whilst in lockdown. Our Marketing Officer has been writing a daily blog, please do take the time to read https://

The outbreak of Covid - 19 means that life has changed for all of us for a while. There are some simple things you can do to help you take care of your mental health and wellbeing during times of uncertainty. Doing so will help you think clearly, and make sure you are able to look after yourself and those you care about. www.visitely.org.uk/visitor-information/blogs. You can keep up do date by following Visit Ely on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Visit Ely/Oliver Cromwell’s House and Ely’s Tourist Information Centre continues to operate remotely by working on a number of projects. Once we re-open we have plenty of events ready, lots of walks, talks, trails and of course planning for Open Heritage and Apple Festival late summer. If you would like any information regarding any of our resources, forthcoming events, or if you are planning a late summer staycation, please email info@visitely.org.uk or call 07704 156867. THE MALTINGS
• Keep Connected – call, message and video call friends and family regularly; catch up with those you haven’t seen for a while; don’t be afraid to tell someone if you’re struggling, we’re social beings and it’s normal to find the current situation difficult. • Keep Active – if you are able to do so, leave your home once a day to walk, cycle, exercise the dog; move around at home listening to something you enjoy; try an online exercise video or dance like no-one is watching! • Keep Learning – try a new skill, learn a language, plant some seeds; use this opportunity to try something you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time; take part in online quizzes, singing, or music concerts, there are so many inventive ways to join in. • Keep Giving – check in with neighbours, offer to do some shopping for those in your community who are self-isolating; if you are able to do so, volunteer with a charity or local community group to deliver food, collect prescriptions or phoning people who are on their own.
The Maltings has had to postpone many upcoming events, unfortunately some of these being weddings and family celebrations. However, staff are working very hard to ensure that alternative dates are offered for the future, to allow these to still happen.
• Keep Noticing – focus on the present; enjoy simple pleasures, such as the rainbows neighbours may have displayed in their windows; be aware of others, they might be finding it hard to cope; and finally, look forward to being able to meet up with friends and family again.
BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS
Useful telephone numbers:
The Maltings will be open for two sessions of Blood Donors on the 28th April and 7th May. It is very important, at this time that the public continue to donate blood. These will be by appointment only, and can be booked by contacting the NHS direct on 0300 123 2323. Keeping safe – please follow Government guidelines

s you will know, it was with such sadness we had to cancel our beloved Eel Festival 2020 which incorporated VE Day 75 and Food and Drink Festival due to Government Advice/COVID-19. All Visit Ely staff have been working home-based, each with specific projects to undertake, so when this sadness and uncertain time lifts, we will be able to offer so many wonderful new walks, talks, tours, workshops, school trips... the list is endless, so watch this space! Our newsletters now will go live monthly instead of weekly, as so many of our wonderful local and surrounding area events are now cancelled or postponed. However, we will post on all our social media platforms daily. Eleanor, our Marketing Officer for Visit Ely has set up a daily blog on our website, why not log on and check it out - find out what's going on in the fens, local support in the villages, and much more - plus see some great photos of her gorgeous dog Oscar! www.visitely.org.uk/visitor-information/blogs

ike all other rowing clubs throughout the country we cannot currently row on the water – very frustrating because the conditions at this time of year would be ideal! About 35 of our members have access to rowing machines at home and we did a challenge over the Easter weekend to raise money for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, specifically for the fight against Covid-19. Some of us even rowed the marathon distance of 42.2 km (in several sessions, not all in one go!). Collectively we rowed just under 900 km (over 550 miles). We started off hoping to raise £500, but we’re now close to £6000 if you include Gift Aid. For us it has been an opportunity to achieve something together even though we are physically separated.
Many of us achieved so much more than we thought possible and it has been a great morale boost for the club. But much more importantly than that, we have been able through the generosity of the sponsors to support the invaluable life-saving work of the NHS. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed! he Isle of Ely Rowing Club is a friendly community rowing club catering for all ages. When normal club activities can resume, we shall run “Learn to row” courses throughout the year and we also encourage people that maybe haven’t rowed for a while to come and see us and jump back in a boat. All of the details can be found at www.elyrowingclub.org.uk. Richard Maxey
T
https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ioerc-covid-19-marathon This current Covid situation is affecting everyone, not least the front-line people at EAAA who are continuing operations as normal. Trauma trained doctors together with critical care paramedics remain in the front line to deal with whatever might occur across our region. TRANSFERRING COVID-19 PATIENTS s hospitals in the region reach capacity treating Covid-19 patients, we are doing more to support the NHS by providing critical care transfer teams to assist the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) in moving Covid-19 patient between hospitals. Our Doctor and Critical Care Paramedic teams have the specialist skills, equipment and extensive experience to look after ventilated COVID-19 patients outside hospital. We will utilise the Cambridgebased helicopter to fly our medical teams around the region to man dedicated transfer ambulances, to take critically ill Covid-19 patients to hospitals with more intensive care capacity. EAAA has assisted with the transfer of three Covid-19 patients so far, but is gearing up for many more with the expected peak in hospitalised patients, and the consequential need for more transfers in the region, expected in the coming weeks. To meet the likely need for transfers during the daylight hours, the shift patterns for clinical teams at EAAA’s Cambridge base have been changed to best meet demand and match the availability of the helicopter and pilots. They continue to need our support, even more so now that additional protective equipment is urgently needed to enable them all to stay safe. herefore, EAA have launched the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appeal Whilst most of us are in lockdown, or furloughed from normal employment, most of the usual ways through which the charity raises funds are in abeyance. ANY contribution, however large or small, however it might find it’s way to us, will be gratefully received. Red boxes are out there, if you are mobile, or contributions by way of cheques could be posted to:- EAAA, Hangar E, Gambling Close, Norwich Airport, Norwich. NR6 6EG. Who knows what might befall any of us tomorrow? TOGETHER – WE SAVE LIVES

ELY COMMON AND THE WILDFLOWER MEADOW
E
ly Common extends along Prickwillow Road from Lisle Lane to the Ely Sailing Club. The Common is protected by its status as a Town Green, conferred in 2012 following a prolonged legal process led by Ely Wildspace. The East Common (from Kiln Lane to the Sailing Club) is also a part of the Ely Pits and Meadows Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Common lies within Ely Country Park, and although part of the East Common (towards the Sailing Club) is owned by a commercial organisation, the remainder is held on lease by East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC).
T
he East Common is rich in wild flowers - the number of plant species exceeds 100 - as a result of long-term annual mowing for hay. Each spring there is a profusion of flowering cowslips, and in the summer, common knapweed, ox-eye daisy, lady’s bedstraw, common birds-foot trefoil
and yellow rattle are abundant. Rarer species such as bee orchid, green-winged orchid and Adder’s tongue fern also occur.
T
he importance of the flora is recognised in an agreement between ECDC, Ely Wildspace and our local Wildlife Trust to extend the wildflower meadow on ECDC’s leased portion of East Common. The meadow area has been increased by preparing new ground and sowing with seed from Chettisham Meadow, a nearby ancient meadow. Mowing is restricted to a single cut in late summer, when the arisings are removed so that they do not smother fresh growth. Why not take a look at the meadow soon while the cowslips are still flowering? If you want to get involved in Ely Wildspace activities or find out more about upcoming Wildspace events visit www.elywildspace.org.uk. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 11

he first ever “Celebrate the Fens day” will be taking place on 20th June this year. The concept was created when fascinating Fens asked its followers, what they thought of having such a day. The overwhelming response was “Yes”, and the idea for the day has gathered great momentum. We want to unite the Fens of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Suffolk, and bring people together to Celebrate everything that the Fens has to offer.
F
ascinating Fens believes in encouraging people to explore and promote the Fens through creativity, heritage, nature, wellbeing and accessibility. The Fens are inspiring, beautiful, mysterious, and fascinating. Obviously, our celebratory events depend on whether the Lock down is lifted. If it is lifted and depending on restrictions, Fascinating Fens are asking you to do your thing on the day. Examples can include: delivering/attend a talk or tour, holding/visiting an opening day, go on a picnic, go camping, be inspired to write a poem or story in the Fens, go rambling, running or cycling. They are also many events being organised during the day/weekend.
I
f the current lockdown is still in place, we will be doing a virtual celebration, where we would be inviting venues/groups/organisations/individuals in the Fens to get involved, ideas can include: creating a blog, video clip, virtual tour, photos or social media posts for #CelebrateTheFens.
W
e would love to see you photographs on the day, as to what you feel should be celebrated in the Fens. Please post these using the #CelebrateTheFens and we will share them.
I
f you would like to stay up to date with activities and events happening on celebrate the Fens day, please follow our blog, or follow us on twitter and Facebook, more information can also be found on our website www.fascinatingfens.com. If you would like to deliver an event/activity on the day please email fascinating Fens with your idea, so that a registration form can be sent to you.

The warm spring weather has enabled families to get outside and blow off some steam. Outdoor activities include den building, gardening, building outdoor gyms, pavement chalk art, even camping in the garden. One family collects litter on their daily walk, and another has built an agility course for the family dog.
A With schools closed to all children except those of key workers, Ely families are coping with home schooling in different, and often very creative ways.
W
ith children of different ages and abilities at home, and parents who are not trained teachers and often are trying to fit in doing their own work, the challenges are clear. So we reached out to a number of families to find out how they were coping, and two key words cropped up: routine and fun. Many families are trying to stick to their usual daily routine: getting up and dressed ‘for school’ and sticking to a familiar timetable for breaks and exercise. As one parent put it, ‘it keeps the weekends special’. Many local families seem to start the day with PE with Joe Wicks on YouTube. Another universally popular activity is baking, which in itself is a maths lesson: measuring ingredients and using fractions to divide cakes and pizzas. Some families are using online resources to learn a new language together, including Spanish, Welsh and even sign language. Parents have also taken this time to teach skills such as laundry, housework, shopping for groceries and money management. ‘Old fashioned’ activities suddenly seem popular; playing marbles, letter writing, knitting, hopscotch. Blue Peter-style model making using household rubbish is also popular. 16 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
nother popular way to engage reluctant pupils is to create family quizzes where everyone researches their own questions on certain themes. One family has its own film festival and the children are making posters advertising the weekly selection. With non-essential shops now closed, many families are making their own birthday cards. The internet has provided a wealth of material for keeping everyone active, educated and entertained. All the local schools have been sending out worksheets and teachers are keeping in touch with pupils to provide help and support.
C
hildren of non keyworkers have been asked to stay at home to keep them safe and stop the spread of the virus, so however they spend their time, whether it is with structured learning or fun activities, the main thing is that they are safe. Perhaps instead of ‘missing out’ on a few weeks of classroom teaching, this generation will be enriched by this experience of spending extended time with their family and learning valuable life skills. amantha Gallop, who runs The Language Pixie, teaches French classes & tuition in Ely, for children aged 5-19 years, said: “It is a very unsettling time as we all come to terms with the impact of the Coronavirus. As schools and nurseries close their doors and more and more families self-isolate, I was determined to remain positive and continue providing local children with their French classes online. The emphasis is on fun, positive language learning and our online classes still ensure the language is introduced through entertaining and enjoyable games, songs, role-plays and activities. he response so far, from both parents and pupils, has been amazing. The children have been totally engaged and extremely pleased to see the other children! The joy of our online classes is that I can offer more flexibility as I am now able to offer classes throughout the day. Parents can also see the classes in action!” For more information about The Language Pixie’s online classes contact: Samantha Gallop thelanguagepixie@gmail.com

Support your local shops and businesses. These are strange times. And a lot of people have, all of a sudden, 'discovered' local shops again - those that care, that deliver and have adapted to serve our communities. And this is great because the High Street we have when this is all over, will be a direct reflection of how people have shopped over the lockdown time. If you want your high street to be full of those great independent shops, go looking for them online. You've got time! (See our list over the page) Seek out what is good in your city. Find them on social media, share a post, see if they sell online. Because when you buy from them, it's another sale that helps toward keeping them afloat. And that means the world to them. If you have to shop online, type in what you want, add a comma and type in ELY. That way you will see if you can buy it locally. Its called the 'google comma’. Then share what you find with your friends. Supporting local businesses at this time means they will still be there when lock-down is over. and that makes our Ely a better place.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES ARE VITAL TO OUR COMMUNITIES AT A TIME OF NATIONAL EMERGENCY
A
s the UK works together to overcome the coronavirus pandemic crisis, small businesses across the country are proving how much they’re at the heart of our communities – pulling together in extraordinary ways to help others. From unexpectedly adapting their business capabilities so they can produce much-needed personal protective equipment (PPE) or hand sanitiser; to offering free food and drink to key workers in the NHS, or helping the most at-risk groups from the new coronavirus by providing them with supplies. There are many examples.
T
he vast majority of small businesses contribute to their local community or to charity. It is no surprise that so many small businesses – who are able to - are going above-and-beyond to adapt and innovate to play their part in dealing with this national emergency, despite, in many cases, facing challenges themselves.
F
orehill restaurant Le Spice (http://www.elylespice.co.uk/) was quick off the mark taking free takeaways to staff working at The Princess of Wales Hospital and Stuart Fowler and staff at Hotel Barge Waternimf on Ely riverside offered front line NHS staff working away from home or in isolation free accommodation. http://www.riverretreats. co.uk/

It is possible to buy in bulk for key workers from their website. https://www.fenspiritshs.co.uk/
T
hese are just a few examples. We know that small businesses play a huge role in helping to make our villages, towns, cities, rural spaces more vibrant and connected places. Many donate time, contribute skills, offer apprenticeships, and more than nine-out-of-ten small employers have hired at least one staff member from a harder-to-reach part of the labour market.

THANK YOU FROM ELY FOOD BANK! As the crisis first started to unfold, the number of phone enquiries increased very quickly. Thankfully we had incredibly efficient support by PA Answer who took 200 calls on our behalf within just 3 weeks. This was an amazing effort, especially as they were re-configuring their own business operations to respond to the crisis at the same time. Glovers Van Hire extended our van hire so that we can use the van on any day that we need it for ‘as long as it takes’ to get through this. This is very generous, especially as they have faced the same problems as many other local businesses. Fencab taxi drivers have undertaken parcel deliveries on our behalf only claiming enough to cover mileage. When Starbucks closed their store, they donated 8o litres of fresh in-date milk, which we included in food parcels distributed that week. Recognising our shortages of stock, Morrison, Tesco and Waitrose have enabled us 22 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
to arrange bulk-buy of critical items. They have also supported these purchases financially. Thank you to FACT Community Transport for helping us move people and food around the area. Thanks to Fenland Mobile Libraries who have a squad of volunteers with spare capacity who are helping our team at Chatteris meet out of hours demand. Through this crisis the community has come together in amazing ways to support each other and to support charities like ourselves. We recognise many of our regular volunteers have had to self-isolate or stop volunteering for health reasons. We are so grateful for their regular contributions, and wish them well as they stay safe through this period. We look forward to welcoming them back in happier times. We recognise that it has been a tough time across the board, and are glad that the community as a whole has responded in so many positive ways. (Excerpt from Ely Food Bank’s April Newsletter)

he Ely Hereward Rotary Club would like to thank everyone who bought a raffle ticket for one of our four giant Easter eggs. Two of the winners have now been notified (Sutton Conservative Club and Burrows News) but the other two eggs and donations are still quarantined at The Atrium and Toppers Hair Salon, so the winners there will be notified when life hopefully returns to something approaching normality. We hope to raise over £200 from these raffles, which will be go to the Ely Foodbank, who have already received donations totally £800 from our club this year.
Just as soon as we are allowed to, Ely Youth Choir will be up and running again, welcoming anyone aged 11 to 18 who wants to sing. We have some great plans for later in 2020, our tenth anniversary year: concerts in Ely, our seventh appearance at the Royal Albert Hall, and a broad range of music from Les Mis to Messiah to Moon River. More info from youth@elychoralsociety.org We hope to see you soon! Ely Youth Choir is part of Ely Choral Society, Reg. Charity 802308.

abylon ARTS’ new Chair of Trustees, Linda McCord attended the Ely CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) annual celebration on Saturday 14th March to receive an incredible donation towards the Ely Cinema campaign. The group had raised £800 at their annual Beer Festival held at The Maltings, Ely and then held an additional raffle, raising a further £120, bringing the total donation to £920.
C
laire Somerville, chief executive at Babylon ARTS said "Given the current circumstances relating to the temporary closure of the cinema, it's really great to be able to share news of this generous donation from Ely CAMRA. It will help ensure we can come back strong, as soon as it is possible to re-open. We'd like to say a huge thank you to Ely CAMRA for choosing Ely Cinema as the charitable enterprise to support this year." This generous donation brings the campaign total to just over £12,500, with earlier events such
as actor, Himesh Patel’s visit to the cinema in September also raising significant funds. Ely Cinema had seen positive growth in audience numbers over the last year and had been midway through the Awards season when Babylon ARTS’ had to pause all screenings due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, preparations are underway to re-open as soon as it is safe to do so.

ir Andy recently visited Addenbrooke’s for a scan before the coronavirus outbreak. In the video he says, “Everyone there was fantastic and extremely helpful. I have made a donation to the charity to say thank you very much for everything that you’re doing.....This is obviously an extremely difficult time for everyone but none more so than for the healthcare workers, so I just wanted to say a big thanks for all of your hard work, dedication and the sacrifices that you’re making at this time for all of us.”

collisions, animal rescues and they support other emergency services. In addition to responding to emergency incidents, our oncall firefighters support their communities by providing information and advice on a range of community safety topics. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours). It’s a hugely rewarding role - we hope to encourage members of the community to get in touch and to find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter. There are some things patients can do to help us: • Do not come to the surgery unless you have a confirmed appointment or are collecting medication from our dispensary or Lloyds, and you know that it is ready
•
Do not attend the surgery if you or anyone in your household has a new cough or fever or if anyone in your household is self-isolating. You MUST arrange for someone else to collect.

ST MARY’S SURGERY - ALWAYS HERE TO HELP by Dr Katrina Young
I
t feels like an incredibly long time since all our lives were turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic. In reality, it’s only been a few weeks. However, during that time our normal day-to-day lives are really not what they were and, for many people, that is an unsettling feeling.
H
ere at St Mary’s Surgery we understand that. The surgery is open and WILL remain open. We will continue to care for and support our 15,500 patients in Ely and the surrounding areas. While all routine appointments are postponed until further notice, there are some patients with pre-existing conditions who need to come to the surgery for dressing changes, for blood tests, some specific injections and for other essential check-ups. If you need to come in, we will contact you.
I
f you do begin to experience symptoms which you feel might coronavirus, check them out online at https://111.nhs.uk/covid-19. Only ring NHS 111 if your symptoms worsen. If you have an illness that is not symptomatic of coronavirus, do ring us. Your GP or nurse may not be able to see you face-to-face but they will hold a telephone or video appointment with you if necessary. We don’t want any patient to feel they can’t be cared for by their health care professional at this time.
Order your repeat prescription online. Use SystmOne online if you are already registered, or download the NHS app, and follow the instructions to register. You can find the app in the App Store for I Phone or Google Play for android

Please try and order your repeat medication 10 days before you are due to run out to give us time to prepare it. Turnaround time for prescriptions is around 5 working days.

KIND-HEARTED COMMUNITY SHOWS GENEROSITY TO ADDENBROOKE’S STAFF #THANKYOUTHURSDAY Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT) has been overwhelmed with offers of goods including fruit, meals and drinks from organisations around the region for Addenbrooke’s staff as they work to care for and save patients during the coronavirus outbreak.
Please can I thank everyone involved as this means a huge amount to the staff on the ground, especially supporting the night staff who are going through a very tough time at the moment. You are all making it so much more manageable for us and helping to maintain health and sanity.”
Thanks to money donated by the public and the generosity of these companies and individuals, each Thursday the charity will be co-ordinating the delivery of items to hospital staff, providing them with the extra treats that they deserve to keep them going through their shifts.
Good Friday saw a delivery of delicious hot cross buns from Cambridgeshire-based White Cottage Bakery and Easter eggs were also kindly donated by Cambridge software house, RealVNC. Their CEO, Adam Greenwood-Byrne, said:
ACT was delighted to be able to start its ‘Thank You Thursday’ over the Easter weekend by distributing over one hundred boxes of goodies, including hand cream and lip balm from The Great British Bee Company, 9000 Starbucks canned lattes from The Work Perk and fresh fruit donated by the customers of The Cambridge Fruit Company, whose owner, Neil Bharadwa, said: “It’s absolutely jaw-dropping seeing the Cambridge community rally around our NHS. Our corporate & residential customers have donated 100 fruit boxes for this week’s #ThankyouThursday. Next week, let’s take it over one hundred!” Hot meals have also been a feature of ‘Thank You Thursday’ with local restaurants and takeaways going above and beyond to help boost staff. Hilary Charlesworth, Imaging Operations Manager at Addenbrooke’s said: “We had meals delivered to our teams and they were very much appreciated. 34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
“At RealVNC, the annual Easter egg raffle in the office spreads joy to our staff. This year, however, we decided to donate all the Easter eggs to Addenbrookes to distribute where they were needed most, recognising that they need this joy now more than we do. I must say that this gesture likely brought more joy to our staff than receiving the eggs themselves at a time where being fiercely selfless is so important.” There are lots of ways you can support Addenbrooke’s at this time. You can donate at www.helpyourhospital.co.uk or visit www. act4addenbrookes.org.uk/helpyourhospital to find out more. If your business could help keep #ThankYouThursday going with bulk quantities of suitable products please email support@act4addenbrookes.org.uk.
Having taken the sad decision to not go ahead with this year’s festival, we are delighted to announce that we are working towardsnext year! The Ely Folk Festival will be 9th-11th July 2021. We have been delighted by the messages of support for Ely Folk Festival posted on Facebook since we initially announced the postponement of the festival. Thank you so much to all our loyal supporters. We are committed to ensuring the long term sustainable future of the festival, and so working with our fantastic artists, suppliers, contractors and supporters over the last few weeks, we are delighted to say that the vast majority of the amazing artists we had lined up for the 2020 festival have already agreed to roll over their appearances to 2021. This includes Show of Hands, The Young ‘Uns, Noble Jacks, Daoiri Farrell, Midnight Skyracer, Daphne’s Flight, Martyn Joseph, Merry Hell, Blackbeard’s Tea Party and lots more. The 2021 festival will be on the same site as previous years and our suppliers who provide the marquees and other elements that we need to make the festival happen, are on board We have been in touch with our fantastic stewards, kids entertainers, morris sides, traders and all those who help make the festival a great experience to explain the situation and plans for 2021. Most importantly, we hope that our ticket-buying supporters will stick with us. Many of you had
already bought tickets for the 2020 festival. We would be delighted if you are willing to roll-over your 2020 tickets to the 2021 festival as this is the best way to support us in ensuring the future of the festival for years to come. We have worked with the Apex box office to arrange the process for roll-over or refund of tickets and the Apex will contact those who bought festival tickets directly to check if they wish to roll-over their tickets to next year or secure a refund. The Apex box office has several cancelled and postponed upcoming events to deal with and they are doing this in chronological order. Once the Apex tells us that they are ready to begin contacting festival ticket buyers we will let you know with an indication of how long they expect it will take to contact you all. In the meantime, we would be grateful if festival customers could refrain from contacting the Apex box office as it is currently dealing with a high volume of calls and emails. Thank you in advance for your patience while you wait for the Apex to contact you. The festival box office will remain open so please do continue buying tickets for the 2021 festival. We will confirmf details of the 2021 festival on our website and Facebook page over the coming weeks and months. Please stay safe and stay at home and we will see you at Ely Folk Festival 2021! email queries@elyfolkfestival.co.uk www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 35
ELY CATHEDRAL WINS NATIONAL ECO CHURCH AWARD Ely Cathedral has been awarded an Eco Church Silver Award, in recognition of the steps the Cathedral is taking in implementing a more environmentally friendly approach in its day to day operations and ministry. The Silver award is part of the Eco Church scheme created by A Rocha UK, a charity committed to mobilising Christians to care for nature. The award, which is renewable every 3 years, provides a unique online survey enabling churches to gauge their contribution to the environment and society and grades their responses accordingly. In 2019, Ely Cathedral was aiming for a Bronze award but ongoing improvements and awareness meant we were able to go straight for the Silver award. Awards are based on performance in the areas of worship and teaching, buildings, land, community and global engagement, and lifestyle. The Revd Dr Jenny Gage, Minister for Social Justice at Ely Cathedral, is particularly delighted with the news;

KING’S ELY WINS NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION FOR THIRD YEAR RUNNING! TALENTED King’s Ely Sixth Form student, Paige Newell, has been crowned the winner of this year’s ILFORD PHOTO UK Student Photography Competition – making it the third year running that a King’s Ely student has won the contest. For this year’s competition, photography students from across Britain were invited to choose one word to complete the sentence, ‘A sense of…’ and to create an image to encapsulate that. Paige, who is in Year 12 and lives with her family in the Ely area, chose the word ‘vulnerability’ and portrayed this using ILFORD HP5 Plus film. Her striking image was printed on ILFORD MULTIGRADE IV RC Pearl paper. Antonio Longo, Head of Photography at King’s Ely, said: “I am over the moon for Paige! Both the image and the print quality were of an exceptionally high standard. The Department also had several other students who were in the final judging again, which highlights the strength of traditional film and darkroom practice.” Paige’s success comes after King’s Ely Sixth Former, Luna Guo, was crowned both the UK and International winner of the competition in 2018/19 36 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
and Orla Simpson won the UK competition in 2017-18, when she too was a Sixth Form student at King’s Ely. To find out more about photography and other opportunities at King’s Ely, please visit: www.kingsely.org
Nominator, Matt Routledge with Mark Cooney of Spotted in Ely present the Community Star Award at Mike’s 80th birthday party. And I said in the last issue that it had been a quiet start to 2020! Little did I know just how quiet it would continue to be. I celebrated my 80th Birthday on 12th March and was delighted to receive a community star from Spotted in Ely thanks to Mark and Alison and Matt Routledge who had nominated me and was contemplating two months left of the Mayoral year with some nice events culminating in Eel Day, the VE Day commemoration and the Food Festival when everything began to be cancelled. Event after event struck out of the diary, so sad for all those organisations and the people who work so hard, the pleasure that people were looking forward to and the money lost to good causes. Then not being able to leave the house, unprecedented restrictions in my life time, but I have family next door and good neighbours. I admit to feeling quite useless, as your Mayor it seems wrong that I’m not out and about doing something, but then responding to the request to stay indoors is doing something. My old father used to say, ‘They also serve who stand and wait’ and it is true, we also serve who self isolate. I worry for the small shops and businesses, the little cafes and restaurants that we love, the pubs, those self employed and our local charities, everyone is facing an uncertain future. I have every respect for all those who are maintaining services and working in the National Health Service. Perhaps after all this we will have a better understanding of who the really important people are in our lives and it’s not always the most highly paid.
Maybe we will re-evaluate what is essential, necessary or a luxury that maybe we can do without. If we can do our job from home, why are we clogging the roads or commuting miles every day? Do we need so many offices with all their managers? All those meetings that I have sat in for so many hours over so many years, were they all really essential? This crisis will bring out the best in many people and show the worst of some, but then we know that, otherwise there would be no need for prisons or a police force. The task for everyone will be to rebuild our society, hopefully for the better. In the words of the great Bob Dylan: ‘Everything passes, Everything changes, Just do what you think you should do.’ Take care. Mike

ELY ROCK EELS Ely Rock Eels wanted to show their appreciation of emergency service workers at this time. “Back in November 2018, Ely Rock Eels created a 999Line outside the three emergency service stations in Ely, along with the help of Ely Cubs. We felt that this is the time to reemphasise our appreciation of the job that these selfless people do for our community every single day, often in difficult circumstances.” said Fleur Patten of Ely Rock Eels. “Bearing in mind the current scientific advice, we would not want to endanger anyone so we will not be physically dropping the rocks in a 999Line outside the stations at the moment but rest assured, Ely Rockers are making the most of their time in isolation by painting lots of rocks! We would like anyone to join in.” continued Fleur. The hope is that all key workers will see this article and check out the event on Ely Rock Eel’s event page on Facebook. What to do if you need urgent police help through the 999 service, but can’t speak If you’re in an emergency situation and need police help, but can’t speak, Make Yourself Heard and let the 999 operator know your call is genuine. WHEN YOU CALL 999 All 999 calls are directed to call centres and will be answered by BT operators. They will ask which service you need. If no service is requested but anything suspicious is heard throughout the process, BT operators will connect you to a police call handler. IF YOU CALL 999 FROM A MOBILE It is always best to speak to the operator if you can, even by whispering. You may also be asked to cough or tap the keys on your phone in response to questions. If making a sound would put you or someone else in danger and the BT operator cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed, your call will be transferred to the Silent Solution system. The Silent Solution is a police system used to filter out large numbers of accidental or hoax 999 calls. It also exists to help people who are unable to speak, but who genuinely need police assistance. You will hear an automated police message, which lasts for 20
seconds and begins with ‘you are through to the police’. It will ask you to press 55 to be put through to police call management. The BT operator will remain on the line and listen. If you press 55, they will be notified and transfer the call to the police. If you don’t press 55, the call will be terminated. Pressing 55 does not allow police to track your location. WHAT THEN? When transferred to your local police force, the police call handler will attempt to communicate with you by asking simple yes or no questions. If you are not able to speak, listen carefully to the questions and instructions from the call handler so they can assess your call and arrange help if needed. IF YOU CALL 999 FROM A LANDLINE Because it’s less likely that 999 calls are made by accident from landlines, the Silent Solution system is not used.
If, when an emergency call on a landline is received: - there is no request for an emergency - the caller does not answer questions - only background noise can be heard and BT operators cannot decide whether an emergency service is needed, then you will be connected to a police call handler as doubt exists. If you replace the handset, the landline may remain connected for 45 seconds in case you pick it up again. If you pick up again during this 45 seconds and the BT operator is concerned for your safety, the call will be connected to police. When 999 calls are made from landlines, information about where you’re calling from should be automatically available to the call handlers to help provide a response.

ARTHUR RANK HOSPICE CHARITY ISSUES SOS!!
Cambridgeshire’s only adult Hospice has issued an urgent ‘SOS!! Support Our Services’ appeal. The call comes in response to the devastating impact COVID-19 has had on the Charity’s ability to fundraise for its vital services this year. The Hospice provides care and support services to patients with an advanced serious illness or a life-limiting condition, and provides end-of-life care, typically to people who are in the last two weeks of their life: “My father spent the final 10 days of his life in the Hospice and he (and we, as his family) couldn't have been cared for better. He passed away very peacefully with many of us around him. It was particularly special that my mother had a bed next to his for his last two nights. We feel bereft that many other families cannot share such moments at this time because of COVID-19.” Sue, whose father passed away on 13 October 2019
In response to the COVID-19 epidemic, the Hospice has had to reduce many of its services to protect the safety of its patients whilst simultaneously refocusing on the core healthcare needs of the County. In just one month (from February to March 2020), demand for the care that the Charity provides within people’s homes (observing strict infection control procedures) has increased, as seen in the 61% increase in the number of referrals to the Hospice at Home night service. Calls to the Hospice have also increased, as demonstrated in the 27.5% increase in the length of time spent on triage calls by the Arthur Rank Community Team. Despite the difficult circumstances, in March the Inpatient Unit still provided care to 27 patients with complex end of life needs, alongside 19 patients in nurse-led beds.
40 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Strict restrictions have had to be introduced for visitors to the Inpatient Unit and care staff across all services are struggling with the harsh reality of not being able to offer a comforting hug, or a hand to hold, to family members and their loved one, at moments of heart-breaking loss. The clinical team are working closely with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Commissioning Group (CCG), Addenbrooke’s Hospital and social care networks to ensure the Hospice is doing everything it can to support the healthcare needs of the wider Cambridgeshire population. The Hospice’s Voluntary Services team have adapted the ‘Caring Communities’ scheme into a telephone befriender service for lonely and isolated people across the county (not just end of life care patients). Retired staff, GPs and student Doctors have volunteered for clinical roles and administrative and fundraising staff have been
redeployed to further support clinical teams. Local businesses have rallied around the Hospice, donating essential items such as PPE for clinical colleagues and iPads for patients enabling them to communicate with loved ones. Thanks to the Hospice’s amazing and extended Team Arthur family, outstanding care continues to be delivered to those who need it from the Hospice’s facilities (Shelford Bottom, Cambridge and the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre, Wisbech) and within homes throughout Cambridgeshire and the Fens. None of what is happening now would be possible without the dedication, commitment and generosity of the local community, who passionately support the Hospice to fundraise £3.98 million each year, which together with the contracted funding from the CCG enables it to deliver its full range of services. Initial financial forecasts have identified that the Hospice will lose at least £700,000 of potential income over the next six months. This is due to scores of fundraising events and personal challenges having
to be cancelled; the closure of the Hospice’s charity shops and Bistro; and the cancellation of training and conference events which were due to take place in its Education and Conference Centre. There are also the hidden costs, such as the immeasurable cost of many of the Hospice’s dedicated volunteers being in isolation and therefore unable to fulfil their roles supporting clinical colleagues.
Whether it is the fundraiser who is being redeployed to work as a healthcare assistant, a Ward Sister recording a video to appeal for protective gloves and masks, or the facilities team putting new infection control measures in place… they have all been incredible. We need to ensure that we can carry on delivering essential care and services now, whilst also ensuring that services remain sustainable into the future. We truly hope that the people of Cambridgeshire will answer our SOS!! Please continue your financial support so that we can continue to provide essential services to our patients. Together we will get through this, because we are #TeamArthur !”
Sharon Allen, CEO of Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, explains the urgency of the Hospice’s SOS: “Never would we have anticipated something like COVID-19 and how this would affect us all in the way that it has. The adverse circumstances in which we find ourselves seem to change hour by hour, whilst the admiration I have for each of my colleagues grows every day, as they constantly adjust, evolve and innovate.

THANK YOU ELY TEACHERS! Although Britain’s schools were closed several days before we entered the current lockdown, teachers have continued to work, and Ely’s schools have had to adapt the way they work in order to meet the needs of local school children. While children of key workers continue to attend school, teachers have also been providing remote support for the rest of their pupils being kept safe at home. Elizabeth Bassett, Head Teacher Ely St John’s school told Elyi: “We have provided a daily diet of work for each year group using our website for access”. She goes on to say: “We sent out a FAQ at the start of the closure which included a suggested timetable but did not require families to stick to it [because] we know families have different circumstances.” The Executive Head for Highfield, Simon Bainbridge, also told us that their teachers are in contact with parents and carers regularly, offering home learning opportunities and other support where needed. While most of the classrooms are empty, the Ely St John’s kitchen is still operational. The school’s cook prepares a hot meal every day and also packed lunches for those at home on free school meals. by Alison O’Connor
Students at St John’s have been sending in rainbows for their teachers which are proudly displayed on the school website. All local schools are still open for children of key workers. This is being carefully managed to keep everyone safe. At St John’s, up to twelve children a day are in school, and they do work from the website the same as the children at home. Elizabeth explains: “There are strict protocols in place to ensure social distancing as much as possible. The children have their own equipment, activities take place across larger spaces, and there is a lot of wiping of surfaces and washing of hands.” During the Easter holiday, St John’s joined forces with the Isle of Ely and used their holiday club run by a sports provider ‘to give the staff a wellearned holiday’. Plans are already being prepared for when the schools re-open. We hope very much that by the time of the next Elyi (end of June) many more children will be physically back at school. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 43
ISLE' AVE A SHANTY 'A SAILOR AIN'T A SAILOR': FUNDRAISING CHARITY SPECIAL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyDjjC4Zbv0&t=2s So many people need so much support during the current crisis we are faced with, but we have selected 2 charities to support with our bit of fun video. (and Excellent work from editor Elliott C Spray) We hope you enjoy it, and if you can spare even a small amount for charity, we thank you. 1. The Addenbrookes Charitable Trust. We are a sea shanty band based in the landlocked county of Cambridgeshire, the front line services need your help. Your donation will aid the wellbeing of staff through this difficult time, provide vital equipment needed to support the Intensive Care Unit and much more. https://donate.act4addenbrookes.org.uk/helpyourhospital/ 2. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution. We may be far from the sea but we wonder how on earth will this vital service to our sailors and fishermen be sustained without donations? https://rnli.org/support-us/give-money/donate
