 @elyimagazine  /elyimagazine www.elyimagazine.com FIND US BY POST The Old Chapel, Butchers Row, Ely, Cambs, CB7 4NA Deadline for the JUNE 2018 issue is 10th MAY 2018

We would like to congratulate Mayor Richard Hobbs on a very successful year in office. This is his last article for us as Mayor and we wish him and his wife Pat all the best for the future. Cllr Mike Rouse takes up the reins (or chains!) on May 21st and so it’s all change for us on the volunteer editorial team as Emily at Ely museum has very kindly agreed to take over our regular history slot from June. We look forward to learning more about the heritage of this great city especially as it is such an exciting time for the development of the museum. We are very happy to celebrate the success of our local independent shops and so we wish a happy first anniversary to all the staff at Kay’s on the high street. There is always an open invitation to our local traders to get in touch if they want a shout out in the magazine. Don’t forget, in spite of the old Oxfam shop renovations, you can still get down High Street Passage to all the lovely shops there. It gets a bit cosy on Thursdays but, hey that’s no bad thing as I have witnessed a marked increase in good-natured banter of late! This month Ely Sailing Club put on their annual open day with a chance to have a go at sailing as well as meet the members of this lively, social club. I did it a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s Eel Fest 4th-7th May but we also look forward to several events coming up in the summer; the Arts Unequalled showcase at the Maltings in June, The highly successful Isle of Ely Arts Festival drawing a multitude of local events together under one umbrella and, of course, the epic Cathedral Flower Festival which brought tens of thousands of visitors to the region 5 years ago. and promises to be just as impressive this time around. Have a great May! best wishes

Richard Hobbs MAYOR OF ELY

As Pat and I move to the end of our Mayoral year the last few weeks have proved to be as busy as the beginning. We were delighted to be invited to the Hereward Rotary Charter Night, this small group work extremely hard not only for local charities but international causes, they notched up a first by asking the Mayoress as the guest speaker, whilst finding hard to remain silent, congratulations to Pat for giving an insight to the role of a Mayoress . I would like to record my thanks to Hereward Rotary for the support they have given us throughout the year. As you may know I have been championing the new Leisure Village, a project I took on some 7 years ago. Whilst extremely proud of our achievements and very excited with the opening of the Hive on the 14th May, I have been very concerned about the anti-social behaviour by a small number on this site which, if left unchecked, could spoil this wonderful family asset. I would like to thank the police for their professional effective approach to this matter. I was invited beyond the city boundaries to Soham Care Home for their Easter coffee morning, I was given a very warm welcome and was very impressed with the feel of this homely place, also to listen to the Ukulele band who always impress me with their infectious enthusiasm. In all my time as Mayor I have never seen such an array of draw prizes, well done to the organisers that give their time freely for the benefit of the residents. I have had the privilege to be invited to the Ely Choral Society concerts throughout the year, but 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

what a treat be present for Bach St John Passion in the Cathedral, I know that this is a very demanding work, congratulations to all for a musical treat. The sun shone on the RAFA service to commemorate 100 year of the RAF held at St Mary’s Church. Congratulations to Dorothy Eames and her small team for organising a fitting service which allowed us time to reflect on the huge contribution the RAF have made to the defence of

this county. Throughout the year we have had the opportunity to meet many young people that play such an important part in city life, in particular those in the cadet forces and those youngsters that wish to establish a skate park in Ely. They have shown a great sense of maturity and commitment to their community. Unfortunately, we only hear the bad bits through the media.

Friday History Group The next meeting of the successful Ely Friday History Group, the final one of this session, will take place at Ely Methodist Church Hall on Friday 11th May, at 10:30 am. The very well known historian & local author Mike Petty will talk on ‘Pickwick’s Ely Scrapbook 1838’, and stories of the people associated with it. His talk will describe Dickensian Ely - life and times in a Cathedral City in the early Victorian age. There is no membership, anyone can turn up, as long as they pay £3 on the door, at Ely Methodist Hall, 15 Chapel Street, Ely CB6 1AD, behind St Marys Car Park We are currently planning on re-starting in October, on the second Friday, the 12th. David Oates has been booked to give us a talk on the History of the Chivers Jam Factory at Histon, 1873 - 1960. Put it in your diary.

A very big thank you to KD productions for their donation to my charity, and congratulations for a very fast moving production of Wind in the Willows enjoyed by all including my granddaughter Jasmin.

Debt Centre Celebrates First Year

How quickly our Mayoral Year has flown, we would like to thank everyone who has made our year very special. Our best wishes go to the New Mayor and Mayoress. A big thank you. Regards Mayor Richard & Mayoress Pat Hobbs

Ely Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre celebrated a year since opening with an Easter themed party which included an Easter egg hunt for children. At the event, volunteer Nigel Gregory spoke about the privilege of working alongside the clients. In the first year the Debt Centre has helped 37 clients including 7 who have become debt free. The Ely CAP Debt Centre is run with the support of local churches alongside the national charity Christians Against Poverty UK. If you are feeling weighed down by debt, and would like help, please call 0800 328 0006 to book an appointment with Ely CAP Debt Centre.

Mike's Musings

Teacher, Author, Historian, Photographer, City Councillor and all round fount of knowledge, Mike Rouse shares with us a little of the history and culture of a life time spent in his beloved Ely. When Ely gained a Mayor, Ely was known as a city, after all we had a cathedral, but there was no charter. Ely did not have a corporation, the closest thing to it over the years from about the sixteenth century was the Thomas Parsons charity managed by trustees drawn from the cathedral and the town, while until 1836 the Bishop of Ely exercised considerable secular power. In 1850 Ely got a Board of Health and under Dean George Peacock it did much to improve the health of Ely through bringing a clean water supply, first by taking river water to filter beds on Angel Drove and then by piped water from Isleham. A sewerage system was also installed, with the first sewage works being on the Grassyards, or Lavender Green as it is now known.

In 1974 there was major reform of local government. The old Ely UDC was merged with Ely Rural District Council and Newmarket Rural District Council, but not Newmarket town itself, to form East Cambridgeshire District Council. The old Ely Urban District area became a parish council, but no longer with a chairman, we now had a mayor, one of only seven in the country formally addressed as ‘The Right Worshipful’. The first mayor was Cllr Frederick Tucker. It is customary for the mayor to serve one year in office and combine the role of civic leader with chairman of the parish council, although two office holders: Cllr Henry Constable (1978-80) and Cllr Lis Every (2014-16) did two consecutive years. Thirty five different councillors have held the office being elected by their fellow councillors who remain at the original number of fifteen, elected every four years. Cllr Brian Ashton served two separate terms, as did Cllr John Willson, while Cllr Derek Crawley served three and the outgoing mayor Cllr Richard Hobbs, a remarkable four separate terms.

With the coming of local government Ely had an Urban District Council of fifteen members first elected in 1895. The UDC had a chairman who was the civic head. In 1973 Ely was honoured by a visit from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to mark the city’s 13th centenary since the foundation of Saint Etheldreda’s monastery in 673. During this royal visit it was confirmed that Ely had been granted city status.

Cllrs Ian Lyndsay, Lis Every & Richard Hobbs. Ely’s three most recent Mayors. This year’s Mayor Making will be at the Maltings on 21st May when members of the public are very welcome to witness the ceremony. Mike The Royal visit to Ely in 1973. The 40th Annual Ely Model Railway Exhibition 19th May 2018 10.30am to 4.30pm Whilst Harry & Megan will celebrate their wedding on the 19th May, Ely & District Model Railway Club will be holding its 40th Annual Exhibition at the City of Ely Community College, Downham Road, Ely. Interest in railways takes prime time television slots these days, and that increasing interest is reflected in our membership, which has been growing steadily, and we are happy to welcome new members. The hobby encompasses a variety of skills from the laying of track, the electronics involved in train control, the creation of scenery, from buildings to trees, the building of locos and rolling stock, and research and study necessary to ensure we reflect the modelling period of time we have chosen. That can reflect steam trains, right through to modern high speed trains. Above all, a model railway club is a very social activity with members all working together on various aspects of layout building and operation in a purpose built clubhouse on the outskirts of Ely.

Our 2018 Exhibition, to be held on 19th May 2018 at the City of Ely Community College, Downham Road, Ely will have 22 layouts to view in a variety of scales and will reflect the pinnacle of the hobby and what can be achieved. In addition there will be a variety of modelling demonstrations and trade stands. There will be a live steam ride-on layout in the grounds and a miniature traction engine also touring the grounds. The kids will love it. Entry is just £5 per adult and £3 for children over 5. Timing for the day is 10.30am to 4.30pm. Membership enquiries can be made at the show, or through the club secretary on 01480 454857 or via email; crofters@ntlworld.com or www.elymrc.org.uk

Kaleidoscope of Life Ely Cathedral Flower Festival Thursday 21 - Sunday 24 June 2018 Ely Cathedral’s long awaited Flower Festival, Kaleidoscope of Life, promises to be an unmissable day out. The event takes place in one of the UK’s most glorious Cathedral buildings with plenty for visitors to look forward to including over 100 magnificent displays, bespoke shopping, music recitals and demonstrations by leading floral experts Expected to be one of the largest and most spectacular events in the East of England, the festival will be officially opened by special guest, Garden Designer Diarmuid Gavin at the preview evening on Wednesday 20 June. The overall theme of the Flower Festival design focuses on the four seasons of life. Highlights will include a water feature, a floral arc the length of Ely’s impressive nave and an entire transept dedicated to commemorating the end of WWI. The crowning glory is a 12 metre wide

kaleidoscope of flowers positioned in splendour directly under Ely’s famous Octagon tower. In addition to the thousands of flowers, the beautiful 14th century Lady Chapel will host an exciting programme of musical performances by choirs from across the world. Visitors to the Festival will also be able to enjoy floral demonstrations and shopping in the Gift & Craft Marquee. The Festival’s Creative Director is Chelsea gold medal winner, Roger Woolnough, who was part of the design team for Westminster Abbey’s Festival of Flowers and was the mastermind behind Ely Cathedral’s nationally acclaimed 2013 Flower Festival. The event will feature the work of over 35 Flower Clubs and Guilds from across the Eastern region. The Flower Festival runs from Thursday 21 - Saturday 24 June – Advance booking recommended. Wind in the Willows - Rebiew by Rosemary Westwell

Wind in the Willows’ produced by KD productions on Friday 6th April 2018 at The Maltings Ely KD production’s presentation of ‘The Wind in the Willows’ at the Maltings in Ely was a joy to behold. All the favourite characters were there: the flamboyant Toad (played by Terry Burns), the river-loving Ratty (Ross Townsend Green), best friend Mole (Rosie Coles) wise old Badger (Oliver Scott) and evil Chief Weasel (Oliver Tattersfield). There were adorable rabbits, the easily rattled policeman, pretty Washerwoman’s daughter, the Toad-look-alike-Washerwoman and a number of weasels and stoats. The scenes played out swiftly and smoothly so that we were soon swept up in the drama. The singing was first rate and the accompanying music well selected adding flavour to some of the most effective scenes. Highlights for me included the effective way in which the characters interplayed and the ingenious scenes of Toad’s escape. Director Oliver Scott, choreographer Katherine Hickmott and producers Scott Ritchie Productions and KD Productions (Daniel Bell and Katherine Hickmott) and team are to be congratulated for presenting

such a great story in such a most enjoyable way. The next production to look forward to is ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which will be touring in Spring and Autumn in 2019. www.kdtheatre.co.uk scottritchieproductions.com

LIONS OF LITTLEPORT WE WANT YOUR GLASSES The Lions Club of Littleport collect used spectacles for use in third world countries and homeless charities in the UK. Since we started collecting the glasses our club has sent nearly 7000 pairs for recycling. The glasses can be dropped off at Wades and Tesco Opticians in Ely, Loach & Wade in Littleport and Soham, and Witchford Post Office. Please help us in this useful initiative! If you would like to find out more of what we do, contact us to attend one of our meetings.

Littleport Lions have had a very busy Easter. We had 6 bunny baskets in various local venues. We also sold knitted Easter chicks and held a Funday Easter egg hunt at The Almonry Ely. Our special thanks go to Mike and Lesley who kindly let us use the Almonry gardens. All monies raised will go to help local charities. We have several events in the pipeline so watch this space!
