MIKE ROUSE MAYOR OF ELY
T
here is a wonderful tapestry in the foyer of the Maltings, which I hope everyone who visits there takes time to study. It depicts scenes from Ely and our sister city Ribe in Denmark and was presented to Ely to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the friendship.
With Remembrance Day approaching, could I make a plea, not just to support the Royal British Legion, but for motorists not to park at any time on the paving in front of our war memorial? Ely is blighted by inconsiderate parking, but please respect those who gave their lives for us.
This August 14th, Association members enjoyed a lovely weekend which included a reception in the historic old Town Hall, and tours of the new Cathedral School and the Jacob A. Riis Museum. There was also an evening dinner during which gifts were exchanged and a Sunday morning service in Ribe’s beautiful Cathedral preceded by a short concert by a world-famous choir from Copenhagen. As well as individual membership the Ely Ribe Association is this year offering Corporate Membership to clubs and organisations in the Ely area who are interested in linking up with similar groups in Ribe. The current annual membership fee is £12. For further details please contact the chairman by phone (01353667949) or email: howardmcmillan@btinternet.com
There is much to look forward to including the Christmas Lights Switch On on 29th November, The Really Big Bash for Cancer charities at the Maltings on 30th November and KD’s annual panto openng on 13th December – this year Dick Whittington (that’s the one about another Mayor isn’t it?) Can’t wait to join in the fun!
Since the last issue we have welcomed the Revd Catherine Dixon to the Methodist Church and presented the summer reading certificates at our busy Ely Library. How lucky we are to have such a great library in Ely offering so much to the community. Richard Hobbs is now Chair of the Needham’s School Old Boys Association and we really enjoyed the annual dinner. Here is another Ely organisation that would love to see new members. There is never enough space to list the many things that we have been doing in Ely and representing the City further afield, but we do get great coverage in our local weekly newspaper, the Ely Standard and there are going to be some regular reports on the City Council in the pages of this magazine. 6 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Please continue to invite Lauren and me to everything and anything and we will do our best to attend, we want to support as many of the events as we can. See you around and come and say ‘Hello!’

llr Mike Rouse, Mayor of Ely is supporting “The Really Big Bash for Charity”, organised by Elizabeth Robertson, Margaret Dooling and friends, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and Myeloma UK. He will open the evening on Saturday 30th November at The Maltings, Ely which includes a delicious dinner, entertainment (acts such as Singer Kathryn Buck; Magician & Mind Reader, Dean Odell; an Auction with Auctioneer David Palmer, star of Bargain Hunt, a raffle and dancing ‘til midnight with DJ Simon Bradley. All for just £35 per ticket! Tickets from: Cancer Research Shop, High Street, Ely or Tel: Elizabeth 07842165417 or Margaret 07837775597. In the 1970’s only a quarter of people with cancer survived, 40 years on, half of all patients survive and with an additional £50 million invested each year, Cancer Research UK aims to accelerate this
Myeloma is a blood cancer with on average 15 people diagnosed every day in the UK and up to 17000 people living with the disease. Although life prolonging treatment can be effective, Myeloma is currently an incurable cancer. This is why we need to raise as much money as possible for Myeloma UK for continued research so that one day the cure may be found.

LIONS CLUB OF LITTLEPORT
O
n 15th September 2019, The Lions Club of Littleport and their guests, who included New Century Lions, had their Charter meal at the High Flyer pub in Ely. The Mayor of Ely, Mike Rouse, gave a speech at the meal about the events he has attended during this year. He also spoke about fundraising for the Mayor’s charity. He praised the Lions for all their valuable work in the community. Club member Lillian, was awarded Lion of the Year by the President Michael Stares. This was for all her hard work as the organiser, promoter and distributor of the 'Message in a Bottle' programme. This initiative is where members of the public are given a specially designed bottle to store medical information at home for paramedics to easily access in an emergency, which is funded by the local Lions Club. Lastly, everyone enjoyed their Sunday roast and a raffle was held at the end of the meal where lots of people were delighted by their prizes. We welcome all people in Ely to join us at the Cathedral on Sunday 10th November 2019 for a spectacular and very moving service, as well as a march through town, parade and Act of Remembrance in the Market Square. The Royal British Legion, City of Ely Military Band, Standards and marching contingents are to take their places within the Cathedral at approx. 10:15hrs ahead of the Remembrance Service in the Cathedral at 10:30hrs which will include a 2 minutes silence at 11:00hrs and spectacular Poppy fall from the Lantern Tower. At approximately 11:15hrs, the City of Ely Military Band, Standards and marching contingents will parade from Ely Cathedral via The Gallery, Minster Place, High Street to the Market Place for the wreath laying service at the Ely War Memorial concluding with a further 2 minutes silence followed by a March Past the War Memorial to take the Salute from the attending Dignitary. Road Closures for the Parade will be: 10:15hrs to approx. 13:30hrs – High Street closed 11:00hrs to 11:30hrs – Gallery shut until Parade clears into High Street. 11:15hrs to approx. 13:30hrs – Forehill closed. As ever, our friends at the Ely Standard will be reporting on it and Spotted in Ely will be live streaming the event for those who cannot attend.
We also thank Ian and Lisa’s Star Roadshow who will be providing the audio equipment on the day and the Kevin Evans and the Neighbourhood watch team. Armistice Service – Monday 11th November 2019 At approximately 10:50hrs on Monday 11th November 2019 there will be a short Service to commemorate the signing of the Armistice on 11th November 1918. Road Closure will be in place: 10:15hrs to approx. 11:30hrs – High Street closed.
LITTLEPORT LIONS CELEBRATE 30 YEARS OF BREAKFAST WITH SANTA!
B
reakfast with Santa was started by Ely Lions club 30 years ago with the help of the then managers, Michael & Lesley, of The Almonry restaurant in High Street Ely. Brian Leonard, who was Father Christmas for many years, opened up his carpet shop in Broad Street to store presents and take bookings for the event. A well known character in Ely he was the "go to" place for anything Breakfast with Santa related, and without his input this event may not have celebrated 30 years. When Ely Lions closed and Brian retired, the Lions Club of Littleport took over the running of this event. They have successfully worked with The Almonry who, prepare a wonderful breakfast and thanks to the present manager, Adrian, we have have achieved the 30th anniversary.

On Sunday 17th November at 6.30pm, Ely Cathedral will hold one of twenty services of remembrance, being held across the UK for families, couples and individuals affected by the loss of a baby, whether that be during pregnancy, at birth or in infancy. The ‘Saying Goodbye’ services launched in 2012, and have since been held in six countries with over 130 services being held to date. The services are organised by leading support charity, The Mariposa Trust, which provides support that reaches over 50,000 people each week through its 6 divisions, and helps people affected by baby loss, pregnancy after baby loss, fertility, adoption and more. Sadly baby loss affects around 1 in 4 pregnancies each year in the UK, with nearly 700 babies lost each day. When parents go through the devastating loss of a baby, whether during pregnancy, at birth or in infancy, they often feel isolated and unable to process the overwhelming grief and trauma that miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal and early years loss brings. The services allow people to stand with others who have experienced the similar trauma of baby loss, and collectively acknowledge and remember each life lost. More information on the charity can be found at www.mariposatrust.org and via www.sayinggoodbye.org. The charity has multiple social media pages, and can be followed on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sayinggoodbyeuk and on Twitter @SayingGoodbyeUK. The charity can be contacted by email at office@sayinggoodbye.org
Ely Foodbank is hitting a busy period. There is certainly a rhythm to our work, and as this goes to print we are experiencing a beat that is fast but short. Harvest donations have been received from schools, churches and businesses which fill up our Store to ensure we can feed people when the rhythm of giving slows down in the new year. We already have our minds on Christmas, and how to best meet the needs of the people in a crisis and how to reduce the worry many people experience at this time of year. Will there be a present to give a child, can they buy foods or even stretch to a tree? At the foodbank we can’t always meet the needs however we can be a listening ear, chat over a cuppa, and for a few minutes help people have a brighter day. Those in need experience little rhythm in their lives; the monotony of their life ‘beat’ is long and slow but foodbank is their to signpost people to professionals and help them with the issues that brought them to the foodbank in the first place. If you can help this winter, please consider donating a small treat or seasonal food items which would help those in need in Ely and the surrounding area. Groups should put together their estimated expenditure and possible income by 25th November. Small grants to help the project take place may also be possible. ‘Your ideas may be on the carnival theme, but it is not compulsory’ said festival chairman, Sheila Friend-Smith. ‘We just want it to be diverse and exciting and hope a large number of community arts groups will apply’. 20 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

ELYFESTIVE 5K
N
ot many places left for Ely Festive 5K! More than 750 people have already snapped up places for Ely Festive 5K, headline sponsored by Ward Gethin Archer and Price Bailey LLP. Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is warning that over the previous four years, the fun run has sold-out, weeks ahead of the event! It takes place on Sunday 24 November with a start time of 9am, starting and finishing in the beautiful grounds of Ely Cathedral. Last year’s fancy dress efforts included reindeers, groups of elves, waddles of penguins, clutches of sparkling angels, a selection of Quality Streets, Christmas trees, fig puddings and a bauble-beard! The push-chair friendly 5K route includes partial road closures and winds around the City’s historical streets and riverside. The fun run is chip-timed, so runners and teams can record their official finish times. However, in a change from previous years, rather than awards for fastest runners, there will instead be spot prizes
and a winning trophy for the best fancy dress, giving everyone an equal chance to win a prize! All winners receive a Santa’s hat and finishers medal. If you would like to take part, sign up now at http://www.arhc.org.uk/ely-5k-registration.asp or call 01223 675888 for a postal registration form. Registration costs £15 for adults and £10 for children. Alternatively, completed forms can be sent to the Arthur Rank Hospice at Shelford Bottom (Cambridge). Registration will close upon reaching capacity, or at 1pm on Friday 22 November. Over £85,000 has been raised by the event since it first started in 2010, through registration fees and the energetic sponsorship efforts of those taking part. Funds raised by the event will contribute to the £8.25 million Arthur Rank Hospice needs to secure annually, to deliver its essential services free of charge to patients and their loved ones.

ELY WILDSPACE BATS AT ELY WILDSPACE Bats are flying mammals that emerge at dusk to feed on insects. They navigate and find food by echolocation, using high-pitched sounds that are inaudible to all but the youngest humans. Bats can however be heard using bat detectors, which convert the sounds to lower frequencies. Different species of bats produce sounds at different frequencies. On a recent ‘Creatures of the Night’ event at Ely Wildspace with the local group of the Wildlife Trust and Wildlife Watch, about 40 participants heard and saw lots of bats including the largest of our British bats the noctule (photo), and the smallest the two species of pipistrelle. The first encountered were noctules, which have a wingspan of about 40 cm. The commonest by far were pipistrelles, whose wingspan is less than 25 cm. In flight they can only be distinguished by the frequency of their calls. 2626 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Common pipistrelles echolocate at around 45 kHz and soprano pipistrelles at a higher frequency of about 55 kHz. Previous records included Daubenton’s bats seen hunting over the pits and a brown long-eared bat. The latter was especially exciting as a single of this species was recorded in the bat hibernaculum on Ely Common two years ago (see photo). The hibernaculum – a winter roost for bats – was created by Ely Wildspace volunteers by converting the Common’s World War II pillbox. It is well placed within the excellent bat habitat at Roswell Pits: woodland, meadows, open water, and the River Great Ouse. PREPARING YOUR GARDEN TOOLS FOR STORAGE
As you're putting your garden power tools away for the winter, it’s worth taking some time to ensure they’ll be good to go next year. Use these five tips to prepare your garden tools for storage – and keep them in top condition for spring: 1. Make sure all tools are clean and dry Mud, dirt and old bits of garden plants can cause your tools to work ineffectively. If you’re anticipating that your machines aren’t going to be used for a while, give them a thorough clean – and make sure they’re dry before going into storage. 2. Drain excess oil and fuel Old oil and fuel can affect the performance of your gardening tools once they make a reappearance after long periods in storage. You can prevent this by draining excess oil and fuel beforehand. 3. Get rid of rust Rust happens when metal objects are exposed to chemicals in the air. You can prevent rust from damaging your machine when they’re in storage by rubbing the area with sandpaper. 4. Replace or sharpen blades and chains Unsharpened lawnmower and chainsaw blades can make the tools run ineffectively. However, you can prevent this (and save time in the spring) by replacing or sharpening the blades and chains before they go into storage. 5. Get your tools serviced and repaired professionally There are some gardening activities that can be done by a novice DIY-er… Servicing and repairing garden tools isn’t one of them. Call Fenland Spirit Services on 0775 383 6499 for help with repairs and servicing. With years of experience working with all types of gardening tools (from lawnmowers to hedge trimmers), we can take the hassle www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 27 off your hands.
Local company, Anvil Cottage Crafts have unveiled their new website. Not only are the company’s artisan pieces available to buy on the site, there is also the option to hire a selection of items for weddings, parties and events. All pieces are handcrafted from new and used horseshoes in the forge on the banks of the river Great Ouse, close to Ely, combining modern day engineering techniques with ancient craft. A must for horse lovers and equestrian enthusiasts, while also appealing to those looking to add some country cottage style to their home or event. Practical and stylish items for the home include a heart candle holder, doormat, bootjack and wine rack. A lot of the items are made from horseshoes from the stables at nearby Newmarket. There is even the option for horse owners to have a stable name sign created. Birthdays, anniversaries or weddings, whatever the celebration, pieces from Anvil Cottage Crafts make great gifts. The elegant horse silhouette decoration is a beautiful likeness of this majestic animal, a perfect gift for lovers of all things equestrian, or anyone looking for a striking artwork. The company’s vintage style pieces are well suited to country weddings and celebrations. Available to hire or buy, items for weddings include the gorgeous heart chair decoration, which looks divine with flowers intertwined and the horseshoe candlestick. Practical items such as the Mr & Mrs, 28 28 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
camping, parking and toilet signs, are ideal for festival weddings and outdoor events. Memorial items are also available to purchase. There is such a precious bond between a horse and its owner, when the time comes to say goodbye, it is heart breaking. The linked hearts could be the ideal way to remember a treasured horse. Handcrafted in the forge from the horse’s own shoes, they are cleaned sympathetically ensuring the history remains. Make memories last forever with the linked hearts keepsake. With the festive season a matter of months away, it will soon be time to start planning decorations for the home. On the company’s website, you can choose from 3, 4 or 5 tier horseshoe Christmas trees. A unique tree for any horse enthusiast or those who like something stylishly different. What’s more, unlike traditional cut trees, they last. Whether people buy or hire items from Anvil Cottage Crafts, they will get high quality individual pieces that will enhance any living space or venue.

HOSPICE AIMS TO RAISE FINAL £35,000 FOR HOSPICE AT HOME TEAM, BY CHRISTMAS In May, Arthur Rank Hospice Charity launched it’s ‘Help Us Be There’ appeal, with the aim of raising £100,000 to fund an additional 200 nights of Hospice at Home care. Due to limited funding, each night the team is unable to provide care to one in three people referred to them, whose choice it is to remain at home. Difficult decisions have to be made every day, as to which patients and families need support more, that night.
Thanks to the amazing generosity of the community and supporters, as of September over £66,000 has been raised, funding an additional 140 nights of additional care. Each night of holistic care costs the charity £472 per patient. The Hospice is now working hard to try and reach its goal to raise a further £34,000 before Christmas. If you’d like to do something to help, you are invited to “Host at Home”. This could involve inviting your friends around for a takeaway or preparing your signature dish for your nearest and dearest, in return for a donation. Alternatively, you may wish to make a one-off donation or pledge a regular gift. Find out more at arhc.org.uk/ helpusbethere or call 01223 675888.

NEW MASSAGE SALON, THAI TOUCH, OFFERING A MARKET PLACE HAVEN FOR ELY! The building in Market Place that used to house the old Ely News is now home to Thai Touch, an up-market beauty salon that also provides expert massage. Treatments include facials, brows, permanent hair removal, waxing, pedicure, the treatment of skin lesions, and many different types of professional massage – including Thaistyle and European. Special de-stressing treatments are available for computer users and drivers. The Thai Touch team includes therapists that are trained with qualifications obtained in both UK and Thailand. The old building has been transformed into a light and airy salon on two floors with a relaxation garden opening shortly at the rear. The business is the brainchild of Joy Taylor who, herself from Thailand, provides an “East Meets West” approach. This blends her caring attitude to treatment and customer relations with the high-quality products and treatment regimens that Western technology can offer. It is the best of both worlds and something Joy and her team feel very strongly about. “Although I have run salons here in the UK and in the far East, it has always been a dream of mine to have a high street salon. People can pop in during a busy day and we have shorter massages available which you can fit into your lunch break as well as the full range of beauty and massage treatments.”
32 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Joy and her husband, Alan formerly ran a successful salon in Chatteris and, now that they have found the perfect location here, they are thrilled to offer the services to Ely. “We are delighted to open in the heart of Ely. Thai Touch is more than beauty and we are honoured to be able to offer here something that complements the beauty of the town with a wellness service that lifts the spirit.” Says Joy If you drop in to say Hi during November you will get a £10 gift voucher! ollowing 18 months in the care of Royal Papworth and Addenbrookes Hospital, A &E and general hospital, Sheila Neill had open heart surgery for the repair of two heart valves and treatment for cancer of the colon. Sheila said“ Having been a nurse for 35 years, I have quite a critical eye on health services. From the cleaners to the consultants, the professionalism and care were second to none, and I am now well on the way to recovery.” As a way of saying thank you, Sheila has organised a Ceilidh to raise money for the hospitals’ charities and Macmillan Cancer Support which gives advice and support during a person’s cancer journey.
Please join us for a wonderful night on the 9th November at Ely College for a mere £15. All profits raised will be divided between: www.actforaddenbrookes.org.uk www.papworthhospitalcharity.org.uk and www.macmillan.org.uk
You could make it your Christmas office “do” while donating to three worthy charities at the same time!
Ceilidhs are great fun and a ploughman’s supper is included as well as a bar selling real ale, lager, Guinness, wines and soft drinks. The excellent Brian Watson as MC will keep the evening flowing. More information is on www.elyhospitalfundraiser. wordpress.com

ELY SOCIAL PRESCRIBING NETWORK Paul Fox describes a new initiative to promote health and wellness in Ely
I
magine if your GP was responsible for promoting health and well-being in the community – not just seeing people who are ill.
Many patients attend their doctor’s surgery because of lifestyle-related conditions. Being overweight, inactive and following a poor diet raises the risks of developing Type 2 diabetes, cardio-vascular disease and cancer. Smoking and social isolation are two further indicators of an elevated risk of future ill health. At the same time, our NHS is struggling to cope with a rising drugs bill and increased demand for medical appointments from an ageing UK population. Many GPs feel overwhelmed and GP burnout is increasingly common. Our family doctors and A&E departments are like cleaners busy mopping up the floor from a sink of ill health that is constantly overflowing. It’s time to turn off the taps! Social Prescribing and Lifestyle Medicine are two key elements of a solution to our health crisis and to help people in the UK generally – and Ely in particular – live healthier and happier lives. The social prescribing movement – now ten years old – enables GPs to write a social prescription as well as, or instead of, a medical prescription. Perhaps the person they are seeing who is depressed, overweight and socially isolated does not need anti-depressants, but instead requires support to connect to their community.
Volunteering, joining a walking group or luncheon club are all social prescriptions that can help. My own organisation, the Yoga In Healthcare Alliance, offers Yoga on Prescription classes to NHS patients all over the UK. This year, for the first time, the NHS Long Term Plan allocates substantial resources to enable every Primary Care Trust in England to appoint a Social Prescribing Link Worker who can work with NHS patients 1-1 on a co-created social prescription to help them resolve their problems. These might be straightforward challenges to their health and happiness – or more serious problems such as debt, housing, unemployment, substance misuse and mental health issues. By creating the Ely Social Prescribing Network, we are seeking to bring together all the social prescribing options available to GPs in our lovely city and to build on Ely’s already strong foundations of community and care. If you are a voluntary organisation offering social prescribing activities or are interested in this initiative, please contact Paul Fox on paulfoxashtanga@hotmail.com so that we can arrange the inaugural meeting of the Ely Social Prescribing Network. Paul Fox teaches daytime Yoga On Prescription classes and on Monday evenings term time, general yoga classes at The Maltings in Ely. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 35

3636| Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
METHOD Step 1
Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling: Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C/Gas 4. Beat cream cheese, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 egg, 2 tablespoons flour, and 1 teaspoon vanilla with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth.
Step 2
Prepare the Apple-Spice Batter: Beat brown sugar, oil, and 1/2 cup granulated sugar with an electric stand mixer on medium speed until well blended. Add 3 eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in 2 teaspoons vanilla. Whisk together baking powder, spices, cardamom, salt, baking soda, coriander, and 3 cups flour. Gradually add to brown sugar mixture, beating on low speed until just blended. Add apples, and beat on low speed just until combined.
Step 3
Spoon half of the batter into a greased and floured large Bundt pan. Dollop Cream Cheese Filling over the apple mixture, leaving a 1-inch border around edges of pan. Swirl filling through batter using a knife. Spoon remaining batter over filling.
Step 4
Bake in preheated oven until a long wooden pick inserted in centre comes out clean, 50 minutes to 1 hour. Cool cake in pan on a wire rack 20 minutes; remove from pan to wire rack, and cool completely (about 2 hours). QUICK FROSTING
Step 1
Place all ingredients (except pecans) in a heavy saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring constantly, over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, 3 to 5 minutes or until mixture reaches a pudding-like thickness. Remove from heat.
Step 2
Spoon frosting immediately over cooled cake; sprinkle with pecans.
Step 3 Enjoy!

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL The City of Ely Council (CoEC) is the first tier of Local Government covering our area. Every 4 years, 15 local people are elected to represent your interests. Any voter in the district is eligible to stand for election. The Full Council normally meets every 4 weeks on a Monday evening and meetings are open to the public. The Council carries out a lot of its business through Committees which meet publicly several times a year. These committees are: • Personnel Finance and Governance • Assets & Acquisitions • Recreation and Cemeteries • Environment • Tourism and Town Centre • Youth Forum The Council is a consultee on planning issues, but the decisions are made by East Cambridgeshire District Council.
Elyi and the City of Ely Council are working together to regularly bring you information and news about the work of the City Council. This is our first edition and describes the structure and how we operate. CoEC manages Oliver Cromwell House, The Maltings, Ely Cemetery, children’s play areas, The Sessions House (which is also the Council Offices), along with some bus shelters and a number of streetlights. The CCTV system covering the City is also the responsibility of the Council. The Council also organises the Christmas Lights in Ely along with the switch on event and also enhances the City through Ely in Bloom, providing delightful seasonal flowers in the City. It has working parties on Transport, the Sessions House and Communications and Public Relations. CoEC has a number of shared equity houses available to help local people get to the first rung of the housing ladder. Councillors are unpaid volunteers, but we also heavily rely upon other volunteers and could not deliver these services without their dedication.
Full details of the Council, minutes of meetings and agendas are available at: www.cityofelycouncil.org.uk / Phone: 01353 661016 CONTACT US: City of Ely Council, Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, Cambridgeshire CB7 4EG

LUCY FRAZER QC MP
A
s we approach the festive season and the end of the year, I wanted to take the opportunity to update you on a number of projects I have been working on throughout this year. They include supporting our infrastructure, increasing our school funding and tackling crime. Of course I have worked on a number of other projects too but it is impossible to mention them all! Since I was elected over four years ago I have pressed for improved road and rail services. I have spearheaded the campaign for improvements to the A10. So I am delighted that the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority and the regional body England’s Economic Heartland have applied for £264.2m to dual the Ely to Cambridge section, and a further £37m for junction improvements on the same stretch. I have supported these bids. It is important that pressure is kept on finding a solution to the A10 traffic as well as consideration of the environmental concerns and I will continue to highlight its importance to my constituency and the wider area. Work on the upgrades to Soham station continue apace to meet the Spring 2021 delivery timetable. The project has been allocated funding needed to bring it to completion, with £3.2 million allocated to the delivery of the current phase and an additional £20 million in the Combined Authority budget. Around £7 million will be used to ringfence monies to upgrade the station. This is fantastic news, and connecting Soham back to the national rail network will provide a huge boost. I look forward to seeing construction start in 2020. We all know that education can be the key to social mobility so I have continued to campaign for fairer school funding and regularly meet with Ministers in Westminster to press the case. I arranged for headteachers from across Cambridgeshire to meet with Schools Minister Nick Gibb to discuss their concerns, and the further £3.1 million for our area 44 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
that was allocated in the revised funding formula. I am delighted that as a result of ours and a wider campaign government has committed £14billion to schools in the latest spending review this autumn. As well as working hard on local issues I am thrilled to have had the opportunity this year to input into national policy on justice. In July, I was delighted to have been appointed as a Minister of State in the Ministry of Justice with responsibility for Prisons and Probation. While my primary focus will always be representing the people of South East Cambridgeshire in Parliament, I’m honoured to be entrusted with playing a leading role in this important area.
L
ocally in Ely, I have embarked on many projects – securing £16 million from government for the Ely bypass, working with local campaigners to ensure we saved the Princess of Wales, working with the NHS to improve dental provision and expanding the rail services at Ely whilst ensuring that residents of Prickwillow and Queen Adelaide will not be cut off when wider work takes place on the railway line. I also regularly visit schools in Ely to meet students and staff. Has your local school visited Parliament? I make regular visit to schools and invite them to Westminster. If your local school would like to visit Parliament then please get in touch. I also hold regular surgeries in the constituency and am here to help with any issues you may have. Constituents who would like help with a problem or to meet with me at the next surgery should contact me by emailing lucy.frazer.mp@parliament.uk or calling 020 7219 5082. To keep up with my work follow me on Facebook and Twitter or visit my website – www.lucyfrazer. org.uk. Have a happy Christmas and best wishes for 2020! Lucy Frazer QC MP, South East Cambridgeshire.
O
n the surface Ely looks a very peaceful and tranquil place with quaint teashops, markets and delightful architecture so it would seem the last place to send chills down your spine. But behind doorways and passages throughout the city there are stories of murder, intrigue and mystery, which cannot be explained as a mere trick of the light. It is no wonder Ely is reported to be the most haunted small city in Europe. To experience more of Ely’s haunted past join us for one of our immensely popular Ely Ghost Tours around the city. The tours begin at Oliver Cromwell’s House, which is a renowned haunted building dating back to before the 13th Century. Here you can often hear children’s voices, see the Blue Lady who wanders down the corridors late at night and experience the presence of the Lord Protector himself. As the tour takes you through the dimly lit streets of Ely you may also encounter historical characters such as the body snatcher in the grave yard, the pale nurse from the old militia hospital, ghosts from famous murders past and of course Black Shuck – a large one-eyed black dog dating from Saxon times.

December 4th 10am - 1pm Women’s Aid Gift Basket Day Re-Imagine Resource Centre
We hear a lot about the amount of waste that’s generated around Christmas, with one of the biggest problems being the vast amounts of wrapping paper that ends up straight in the trash.
Beauty baskets benefit women fleeing abusive relationships and at Re-imagine we are working with Women’s Aid to supply blessings baskets to be given out over the Christmas period in 2019 in our local area.
The timeless ritual of giving gifts and wrapping them up however, is never going out of fashion any time soon. So how do we find ways of maintaining the excitement of present opening, without all the waste? In this workshop I explore some of the green alternatives available.
These will include toiletries, toothbrushes, bubble bath, a set of sheets, underwear and new pyjamas, nightdresses and robes. We will also include chocolate and perfume and a Christmas ecocreative tree decoration kit.
Everything you need to learn some eco-fabulous bow, gift tag and wrapping methods...you can bring 3 gifts to wrap and purchase materials and ideas to do all your others gifts at home. £10 per person, including tutor support, materials for your 3 gifts and refreshments. Tickets available at the centre or to purchase online: go to Re-imagine facebook Page to find out how to book
The Re-imagine Community Factory accepts discontinued, overflow and end-of-line stock from local businesses as well as toiletries, cosmetics, giftware, jewellery, nightwear, new towels, underwear, new sheets or pillowcase, bath and beauty products or any other appropriate beauty non-perishables. We are also accepting donations of chocolate and tea cups and saucers.
Get eco-creative, turning waste things into great things - without costing the Earth. Start dreaming of a truly green Christmas.
Let’s get together to eco-create beautiful gift baskets for women seeking refuge from domestic violence.

C
ity of Ely Council’s big Christmas light switch-on is on it’s way and is set to be bigger than ever before and The Newstead Family who organise this for them are celebrating their 15th Anniversary. Friday 29th November sees this year’s event spreading throughout the city with new attractions all over and that once again the streets of Ely will be transformed to celebrate Christmas under the shadows of Ely Cathedral. In partnership with the City of Ely Council, the famous Switch On parade will happen with Santa and Ely Panto cast arriving on a white horse drawn carriage through the streets of the City and on Market Place on the switch on evening. The fun starts at 4.00pm live acts on stage to allow folks to also join in the fun on this very special night where the crowds will be entertained by top musical and entertainment acts on the massive stage. This all leading up to the big switch on and main act at 7pm.
In addition to the headline act which is kept a secret for the time being, the award winning local theatre group, KD Theatre will kick off the switch-on as always by joining in the procession through the city with cast of Dick Whittington and Santa on board. We then have Frozen LIVE on stage plus many more acts to announce over the next few weeks. All the fun starts from 3pm in the city with funfair rides and the stall-holders opening at 4pm but be aware road closures are on all day from 5.00am throughout the city. MAKE IT A MAGICAL
CHRISTMAS at Ely Cathedral
This Christmas, Ely Cathedral welcomes Carrot Productions, the world’s leading performers of The Snowman film with live orchestra. Set in the stunning surroundings of Ely Cathedral, the performance offers much more than just a viewing of the beloved animated movie. Opening with a toetapping Christmas Medley, there follows a fun musical tour of the orchestra, offering audience members young and old the opportunity to see and hear the instruments individually. And there will even be a visit from The Snowman himself! The orchestra includes top musicians hand-picked from some of the UK’s finest orchestras, such as The Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic. The performance features a Cathedral chorister singing the haunting Walking in the Air solo which lies at the
heart of The Snowman. The programme also includes a second animation, specially commissioned by Carrot Productions. The Bear and the Piano is an exclusive animated film based on the award-winning book by David Litchfield, with narration recorded by Joanna Lumley and music by Daniel Whibley. Speaking about her involvement, Joanna Lumley said: “In the tradition of Peter and the Wolf and The Snowman, The Bear and the Piano is an enchanting story told with glorious music and is a bewitching treat for all ages. I am 109 and read the tale aloud and felt as though I were seven again. Delicious! “ A truly heartwarming experience for all ages, and the perfect family outing between Christmas and New Year.
