Hello Ely! Whilst putting this issue together I have had the phrase “Covid Positive” going round in my head. I really wanted to feature some good news and content that would cheer up and encourage readers at this time. But whilst I was delighting in the idea of using the catchy double entendre, I realised that for many who have suffered, the words “Covid Positive” are certainly no joke. My sister had the virus at the beginning of the outbreak but, thankfully, was not hospitalised. So, although it has touched us we have not had to suffer the heartbbreak of losing a loved one or the trauma of extended stays in intensive care. So I would just like to send my best wishes and encouragement to you all from all of us who work here on your little community magazine. Keep on keeping on, supporting each other in the community and we will come through this, we will recover. There are already positive signs in the city centre with empty units being inhabited again by new and exciting ventures. (see pages 46-47) In fact, we didn’t have room for them all so look out for a further “Independent Shoutout” in the January issue too. It is great news that the Maltings’ Panto is going ahead this year and I am sure tickets will be snapped up very quickly. (see pages 34-35 for all the info) It has become a bit of a tradition now that the KD cast photo graces the front page of the final Elyi of the year. We are particularly happy about it this year as you can imagine! Have a light-filled Hallowe’en and a a wonderful Christmas!

best wishes Bridget

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update

City of Ely Council Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, Cambs CB7 4EG Phone: 01353 661016 Fax: 01353 667057

POST COVID-19 COMMUNITY WORKING GROUP

BLACK LIVES MATTER

The post Covid - 19 / Community Working Group at the City Council, was set up a few weeks ago to continue to liaise and build on the collaboration of local mutual aid groups, charities, East Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council.

The City of Ely Council passed a motion in July 2019 affirming that it is inclusive of all people irrespective of age, race, gender or gender reassignment, sexual orientation, marriage or civil partnership status, pregnancy and maternity, disability, religion or belief.

The practical and emotional help given to people by neighbours and friends involved in mutual aid groups, as well as more formal support, through the councils, has been fantastic. The important role played by volunteers during the pandemic is invaluable and will continue to be so in the months ahead.

The killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, by a Minneapolis police officer who knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, sparked overwhelmingly peaceful Black Lives Matter protests in the US, the UK and around the world. In Ely, a video of a policeman stopping a car simply because the driver was black, went viral.

The City Council are fortunate to have wonderful volunteers who spend many hours involved in supporting events and services, such as putting up the Christmas lights which decorate our City.

These, and other incidents bring home how inequality pervades our society, in these cases based on skin colour. Ely is a highly diverse City. Most people living in the city describe themselves as white and therefore it is vital to ensure that we do not forget those Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) who do live here.

VOLUNTEERS Many others spend their spare time as Friends of Ely Cemetery, whilst another group supports the CCTV system and not forgetting City councillors, although elected, are volunteers too. Volunteering enables people to play an active role in their society and contribute to positive social change. It helps to break down social barriers and offers people an opportunity to socialise with people from different social and cultural backgrounds. It provides an opportunity to develop new skills, whilst gaining experience, or share existing experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, volunteering is both challenging and rewarding. As we begin to learn to live in a ‘new normal’ world, the Covid/Community Working Group is exploring opportunities for people to get involved, whether it’s helping with events, a few hours litter picking , micro-volunteering, being part of the community gritting scheme or finding safe ways to support community groups to start up again. Your local councillors are always happy to be contacted, the Council office is open for phone calls and we would love to hear your ideas. 16 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

The City Council, therefore, made the decision to demonstrate our support for our BAME residents by passing a Black Lives Matter motion. This reaffirmed that the Council consider all people to be equal and welcome, both in the City and the Council Chamber, while acknowledging the discrimination that has affected the lives of BAME people and the particular circumstances highlighted by the incidents mentioned above. Ely and the surrounding area has always been a place for BAME people and for encouraging diversity. One such person is Olaudah Equiano and is worth recounting:

ELY CITY COUNCIL UPDATE

Thursday 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th November

According to his memoir, Olaudah Equiano was born in around 1745 in the Eboe region of the Kingdom of Benin, in what is today southern Nigeria. Enslaved as a child he was shipped to the Caribbean and sold as a slave to a Royal Navy officer. He was sold twice more but bought his freedom in 1766, and for a while worked at sea including as part of an expedition to the Arctic to try to find a north-east passage to India. On moving to London, he became active in the campaign against the slave trade and was encouraged and financially supported by benefactors to write his life story. In April 1792, Equiano married Susannah Cullen, a local woman, in St Andrew’s Church in Soham. The register containing the record of the marriage is held in the Cambridgeshire Archives. The couple settled locally and had two daughters who were baptised at the church in Soham. Equiano died in Westminster in 1797. The City of Ely Council stands with our BAME residents and affirms that Black Lives Matter, and will continue to work to ensure that all people are welcome in the City and that we will work to ensure their inclusion in the work of the Council. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 17

ELY MAYOR SUE AUSTEN Since taking up her post as Mayor in the summer, Cllr Sue Austen and her consort, Cllr Arnie Arnold have had to think outside the box. They are very happy to do socially distanced visits to support groups and organisations and encourage you to get in touch if you would like a them to officially attend. agreed to the use of the Maltings again so that the Christmas Panto can go ahead. Due to social distancing measures this will be available to an overall audience of just 4,000 instead of the usual 11,000 that throng to see the show, but we were determined to find a way forward to support this annual Christmas treat for the people of Ely.”

Since the last issue, the Mayor and Consort have been out and about in Ely meeting market traders, residents and visitors to the city. They also laid wreaths at 3 ceremonies commemorating the end of WWII.

They weathered a little drizzle in early September to watch the KD Theatre production of ‘Treasure Island’ in the Dean's garden. “It was such a treat to see some live theatre and all who attended were impressed by the careful attention to social distancing so that everyone could have fun in safety. ” Said Sue. “The council have just 18 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

As part of Heritage Weekend, the Mayor’s consort organised visits to the wonderful cemetery in Ely together with the Visit Ely Team. The Mayor's Garden Party at Wisbech Castle went ahead. What a stunning place it is. The once derelict castle and gardens have all been brought back to life by local volunteers. The Mayor had a very interesting and inspiring visit to the volunteers at ‘Scrubs for Cambridgeshire’ which is currently hosted at Bar 62 They met with organiser, Giocoma Gomez and some of her team. What an extraordinary enterprise it is!

REMEMBRANCE AND THE POPPY APPEAL As you are all aware we are living in unprecedented times, CoVID has caused the disruption of all of our lives and affected numerous events in and around our communities. Unfortunately, recent commemoration events such as VE Day, VJ Day and the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain were also affected and resulted in small but dignified events at the Ely War Memorial and other memorials around the country. The City of Ely RBL and Visit Ely have been planning for Remembrance and the Poppy Appeal for some time now and the ever changing guidance from the Royal British Legion and the Government means we will NOT be able to hold a marching parade as we have done in previous years. However, Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day will still take place with certain restrictions. In addition, we are requesting that you should stay at home in a safe environment and view the live streaming of the Services on Facebook. If you feel that you want to be at the War Memorial please observe social distancing, no more than 6 in a group and wear face coverings where possible; the immediate area around the war memorial and on the Market Place will have barriers to protect those participating. Road Closures will be in place on High Street on 8th November from approx 10am - 1pm and on 11th November from 10am - 11.30am. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY For Remembrance Sunday, the Cathedral will be holding a Remembrance Service on Sunday 8th November starting at 10.30am but this year will see a much reduced congregation. By mutual agreement between the Cathedral and Ely RBL, only two Standards will be permitted (The Union and City of Ely RBL Branch Standards) and wreaths will be laid, as usual, in the Cathedral. Entry to the Cathedral Service will be by ticket only with priority given to Royal British Legion Veterans and Serving personnel, who MUST contact the RBL branch Chairman, David Martin, via email: CityOfEly.Chairman@rbl. community or text 07748592148 with your

details (Name, Service or Organisation, contact details). Other groups who usually attend or participate in the parade are asked to only send a maximum of 2 representatives and must also contact David Martin for tickets. The Cathedral will contact their congregation separately. Please be aware the wearing of facemasks is currently mandatory whilst in the Cathedral and for all attending the Remembrance Service. Following the Service, at approximately 11.30am, the Standards and wreath layers will then move to the War Memorial to lay wreaths. Due to the usual large number of wreath layers, it is requested that organisations lay their wreaths after the main ceremony, starting at approx 12.30pm on 8th Nov: please contact David Martin for further information regarding the laying of wreaths. ARMISTICE DAY Armistice Day will consist of two Standard Bearers and wreath layers for a small Service at the War Memorial on 11th November starting at 10.45am and should finish at 11.30am POPPY APPEAL As you may know, many of our Poppy Appeal volunteers fall within the vulnerable age group and therefore The Poppy Appeal will be massively scaled down this year. There will be opportunity to donate and obtain Poppies as we are able to have our usual stall on the Market Place from 31st October until 7th November. However, at this time we do not know if other locations will be available to distribute poppies. For those who would like to purchase wreaths please contact the Poppy Appeal Organiser, Les Wilson, by email leswilson439@talktalk.net or by phone, 07950300122 The over-riding factor is for the safety of those participating, supporting and attending these ceremonies and our local communities. I would like to thank you all for your attendance in the past however, it is with a heavy heart that I have too politely request you stay away from the ceremonies at the War Memorial and observe your own commemoration at home where possible. Thank you for your support during this difficult period and in the future, and hopefully we will have a normal parade next year. Stay safe!

These people are an extremely important part of the service provided to our communities through their training, commitment and availability by CFRS. More are needed to provide cover from home or from the workplace – please get in touch for information. email: firefire@cambsfire.gov.uk or telephone 0800 9179994. Preparing for Winter – for those households still with open fires or solid fuel burners it continues important that chimneys are regularly swept and inspected, particularly within the roof space (out of sight – out of mind ?) Burn suitable fuels, keep furnishings a safe distance from the fire and use an approved fire guard. For households with central heating – please ensure that annual boiler servicing is carried out – don’t leave it to chance. Breakdowns, particularly in winter are inconvenient and potentially dangerous. Michael White

AQUAFEST SAVE THE DATE! - 4th JULY 2021 However it is likely that we will not stop anywhere on the route, give out sweets or even knock on your doors for donations. Obviously that will very much reduce the money you generously give us but we will be at various places in the run up to Christmas and hope you will visit us and make a donation. Your donations help us to support many local charities and good causes as well as the occasional International disaster area. Secondly, we have started to prepare for Aquafest 2021. We see this as one of the most important In the world we live in currently it is very difficult to say what we can or cannot do, even next week, but the Rotary Club of Ely desperately want to bring out Father Christmas on his Sleigh as we have for many years. However with the current restrictions and taking our responsibilities seriously we will undoubtedly have to change this year. So obviously whilst we may still have to change our plans at the last minute we hope at the very least to still visit all the Streets that we have in previous years. 22 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

LADIES WHO LAU

When it comes to female entrepreneurs, the Ely are embarrassment of riches delighted to hear from lo artist, Charlotte Hannafo newcomer to Ely, designe Starzyk. Ely Ladies, if you would li celebrate your success in get in touch!

Charlotte Hannaford ARTIST

Charlotte is currently studying fine art at Middlesex University. This year has sent a few Covid curve balls and she has been spending the majority of her time doing her artworks from home, here in Ely. She grew up surrounded by horses and wild life and started drawing from a very early age. Charlotte says, “I have a strong passion for curating equine art where I am able to show the true beauty of the animal, capturing it in one moment. I prefer to paint horses where they have no restraints, seen in their natural form, letting their true personality shine.” Many of Charlotte’s equine paintings are impressively large in size, actually larger than lifesize, and certainly make a bold statement. She really conveys the majesty and power of these beautiful animals. “I often use a plain or abstract background and the reasoning behind this is so that the viewer’s eyes are drawn to focusing on the horse, allowing you to forget about all of your surroundings.” Says Charlotte. Charlotte has a thriving Facebook page where you can see more of her paintings as well as some stunning animal sketches. These are available to order as well as her absolutely gorgeous 2021 calendar. Her website https://www.prestige-artwork.com is where you will find the original equine art for sale. She has been running Prestige Artwork for about 6 years and aspires to become a full-time equine artist in the future. ike to n the Elyi,

Eva Starzyk DESIGNER Cow On The Ice. A small business with a big heart. Swedes don’t say “no worries” if everything is all right… they tell you there is “no cow on the ice.” (Ingen ko på isen). Eva, the talented designer and owner of Cow On The Ice is a caffeine-dependent life-form, papercut survivor, and dog enthusiast. She likes to say that she was “smuggled” 5 years ago to the UK to help a software house from Northampton with their branding. But she wasn’t smuggled. She was officially invited and so the adventure began.

She did it without savings, start-up loans or possibly even common sense but with a great desire to make people smile with longsnouted toys, anti-ordinary, thoughtfully crafted clothes, accessories, homeware and paper goods that bring joy and make everyday life truly exceptional.

After a few years of creating interfaces, fixing user’s experience, losing eyesight on animations, illustrations and pushing pixels for the glory of her employers, she left to start her own project – Cow On The Ice, a design micro store and studio.

She opened her studio in a tiny, stripey container in Coventry and… ...well... COVID happened. But, as luck would have it, Eva and her partner Dean got a tiny, ancient river cruiser as an unexpected gift and on one of their trips discovered Ely! They fell madly in love. No, not with each other again haha! but with our beautiful Fenland City. You can catch Eva every now and again on Ely market. As part of her plan to spend more time here Eva is looking for a small studio/shop in the town centre for herself. If you know of any suitable locations do get in touch. If you are into affordable high-end design check out their website: www.cowontheice.co.uk or find Eva on Facebook and Instagram @cowontheice.co.uk FIND EVA ON ELY MARKET 7th & 28th November 5th, 19th, 23rd December

ONLINE SPANISH LESSONS Beginner to Advanced Level Courses for Adults & Children via Zoom Fun & Rewarding! GCSE & A Level Tuition Available

LIBRARIES OPEN! Following the success of the Spring ‘In Your House’ programme, The Library Presents is back for a brand-new Autumn season of free events for Cambridgeshire. The new season, starting on Friday 16th October includes over 80 theatre, dance, music, comedy, puppetry and magic events. Much of the Autumn season will be available online to tie in with COVID-19 safety measures, however there will also be some small live performances in several outdoor locations across Cambridgeshire. The programme, which provides something for everyone, regardless of ages and interests, usually takes place in Libraries across the county. However, with safety measures in place due to COVID-19, the new season has been launched by Cambridgeshire County Council to allow residents to watch, and participate in high quality arts and culture performances and workshops from the comfort of their own homes. Although the Spring season of events was cancelled due to COVID-19, the digital events helped people stay connected during lockdown. One participant commented on her experience: “I knew nothing about the [Quarantine Quilt] project until a small cardboard box arrived at our house. To sew my patch was very enjoyable and I loved being part of something much bigger.” All Cambridgeshire libraries have now reopened and are offering a free Select and Collect Service. Residents can return books, pick up pre-ordered books, or use a pre-booked computer. There are still a wide range of library services available to access from home and the team is reviewing the offer and looking into when they can safely enhance library opening hours and access. Look out for information on the library windows and online at: https://www.library. live/the-library-presents.

DRAGONS AND DAMSELS IN ELY WILDSPACE

Ely Wildspace is a superb environment for these charismatic aerial predators. The combination of diverse water habitats for breeding, speciesrich meadows for hunting and wooded areas for shelter provide ideal conditions for them. Twenty species of dragonfly and damselfly have been recorded here including Britain’s largest, the Emperor, and the aptly named Beautiful Demoiselle with its metallic colour and butterflylike flight.

49

With climate change new species are colonising the UK. One of these is the Willow Emerald. The first record for Cambridgeshire was in 2014 from the Wildspace. This metallic-green damselfly is unusual because it lays its eggs into the bark of trees and shrubs overhanging water. The Southern Migrant Hawker has recently colonised Cambridgeshire. Will this become the 21st species recorded in the Wildspace? If you would like to be involved in Ely Wildspace activities or find out more about upcoming Wildspace events visit www.elywildspace.org.uk

One of the more obvious dragonflies in Ely Wildspace is the Common Darter. This is a small, busy dragonfly which flies from late June until November in mild autumns. The males have a red body whilst the females are a dull yellow-brown. They may be found perching on fences along Kiln Lane, or even on the ground. On occasion, they can be encouraged to perch on an outstretched finger! If you check the lily pads on the pit across from W.A Cooke & Sons in the first half of the summer you will see blue and black damselflies with blood-red eyes. These are male Red Eyed Damselflies. They are exciting dragonflies to watch as they frequently dash out to defend their lily pad from rivals. 32 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

IS PANTOMIME TO RETURN TO THE MALTINGS THIS CHRISTMAS BOYS AND GIRLS? OH, YES IT IS!

KD Theatre Productions (now in their 8th year producing the professional pantomime at The Maltings, Ely) are determined to entertain their audiences this Christmas with a spectacular, socially-distanced and covid-secure production of ‘THE WIZARD OF OZ’. Join Dorothy as she goes on a magical adventure, over the rainbow, where along the way she makes new friends with the Scarecrow who longs for a brain, the Tin Man who really wants a heart and the very cowardly Lion who is desperate to be brave and have some courage. Dorothy needs to find her way home, but it’s not going to be easy with the Wicked Witch of the West keeping a close eye on her! Will the Great and Powerful Oz be able to help? This larger than life, pantomimic, colourful story is packed with hilarious jokes, dazzling dance routines, glittering scenery and plenty more for all the family! Usually over 11,000 people attend the pantomime each year, however due to social distancing and limited capacity, a total of only 4,000 tickets are available across the performances which run from the 18th December 2020 – 3rd January 2021. As well as social distancing seating around the auditorium, audience members will have their temperatures checked and asked to sanitise their hands-on arrival. The show will run at 75 minutes with no interval (to minimise crowding) although audience members will have opportunity to purchase refreshments and merchandise before the show. To book tickets or for more information on all the safety measures in place please visit www.kdtheatre.co.uk or call 01353 725 026.

I’m hoping to work with EAAA to help to raise the funds to do what they do best, and to raise awareness for them” One of many stories – please help to enable EAAA continue this priceless life-saving work. Together- we save lives. Michael White

You won’t be surprised to hear that, despite Covid-19, these missions have continued unabated. What hasn’t continued unabated though is our flow of contributions through red collection boxes so our cashflow has seriously dwindled ! Many organisations have set to to generously send in contributions to help bridge the gap but, what can we do ? If you are a trader, please consider supporting us in a manner appropriate to your activity – perhaps by sighting a collection box ? Please contact ‘info@eaaa.org.uk’ or ‘phone 03450 669999 for information and support. As a member of the general public please continue your generous support through red collection boxes wherever you find them. You might also consider joining the EAAA weekly lottery ( ‘EAAA lottery’ online ) or even making a gift, no matter whether large or small, in your will. Please help us to help those in need. Dave Woodhouse came off his motorbike. The car driver in front, having been aware of his presence in his mirror, noticed he had ‘vanished’ so turned to find him. Having found him, Charles Morris dialled 999. Police, Ambulance and EAAA’s Anglia 1 team from Norwich responded. The crew provided enhanced care, assessing Dave’s injuries, sedating him and ‘packaging’ him for transport to Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. His injuries included a sustained life-changing spinal injury requiring four month hospitalisation. Now wheelchair-bound, Dave’s determination to recover has been an inspiration to everyone at EAAA. “…I am so thankful to have been given

NHS VACCINE REGISTRY GIVES CAMBRIDGESHIRE PEOPLE THE CHANCE TO HELP BEAT COVID-19 People across Cambridgeshire are being asked to play an important part in helping to find a vaccine for COVID-19 by signing up to a new NHS registry. Anyone aged 18 years or over can sign up to the new NHS COVID-19 vaccine research registry to receive information about new COVID-19 vaccine trials which are expected to take place in the region over the coming months. Joining the registry does not mean you are automatically signed up to a trial, it just means that you can be contacted to find out about what taking part in one would involve. So far, over 20,000 people in the Eastern region have already signed up, but in order to make sure any vaccine works for everyone, researchers need people to take part from a wide variety of backgrounds, ages, and across as many counties as possible. The more people who sign up, the quicker and easier it will be for researchers to find people who would like to take part in the vaccine trials. With the help of these volunteers, researchers will have the best chance of identifying an effective

vaccine which could help protect the UK and world population against coronavirus as soon as possible.

To find out more about the NHS COVID-19 vaccine research registry, visit: www.bepartofresearch.uk, or to sign up visit: www.nhs.uk/researchcontact

The registry has been developed as part of the UK Government’s Vaccine Taskforce, in partnership with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), NHS Digital, and the Northern Ireland, Scottish and Welsh Governments. Dr Helen Macdonald, the NIHR Clinical Research Network Eastern’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “We want to give as many people as possible to have the opportunity and information they need in order to make an informed choice about taking part in COVID-19 vaccine research, and this registry is the best way to do this. Since the start of the pandemic, NHS teams around the region have been delivering research to help find treatments for patients with COVID-19. This includes contributing to findings from the NIHR-supported REMAPCAP trial announced yesterday, which show that corticosteroids can significantly improve outcomes for severely ill patients with COVID-19.

ARTIST GRAHAM AUSTIN Ely artist, Graham Austin, has been painting for over fifty years, specialising in wildlife and aviation. His work has been exhibited locally and throughout East Anglia. A keen ornithologist, he has been enjoying observing the peregrine falcons now residing on Ely Cathedral and was challenged to paint one. Prints of the finished work have been made and are available from the Ely Cathedral shop. Another notable painting of Grahams was completed in 1994 and was commissioned by local businessman and historian, the late Barry Aldridge. It depicts a local event in April 1944, showing the fate of two Lancaster bombers returning to Witchford airfield after a raid over Germany. Prints of this work have been distributed worldwide. Graham is also well known in the area as half of a Flamenco duo. He and his son Matthew form Los Gitanos and have performed at many events over the years. There is no doubt that art and music have created a busy and fulfilled life!

In 2019 two peregrine falcons set up nest on the rooftop of Ely Cathedral. The Cathedral initially kept very quiet about their arrival in order to give them a chance to settle in and to see if they were going to nest and make Ely Cathedral their home. Well, if you were in the city over the summer it would have been hard to miss the fact that they did just that! The two juveniles were a lively pair and could often be heard screeching as they chased around in the skies above the High street. Peregrine falcons were driven to near extinction in the UK through the use of pesticides and hunting

and the birds are protected by laws reinforced by European legislation known as the Nature Directives. These magnificent birds of prey can grow up to half a metre in length and have a wingspan of over a metre. They live for 15 to 18 years and are actually the fastest animals in the world and are formidable hunters, diving at speeds of just under 250 miles an hour to catch their prey. They are also incredibly agile and have been observed flying upside down to catch food dropped by a mate. The name Peregrine means 'wanderer'. They can travel vast distances outside the nesting season but their incredible homing instinct leads them

back to their favoured aerial locations! Some nesting sites have been in continual use for hundreds of years, used by successive generations of Peregrines. A spokes person for the cathedral says We hope that they continue to nest in the Cathedral's towers for years to come. A new nesting box is being installed early next year and The Kings School are kindly sponsoring a camera and viewing screen so people will be able to see inside the box which will mean having a fantastic insight to their activities and we hope there will be new chicks next year.

LANTERN DANCE THEATRE

We successfully reopened in-person integrated dance classes with live streaming for people shielding.

Lantern Dance Theatre, Ely’s integrated contemporary youth dance group, began weekly Zoom meetings in July, to substitute for its two Company Classes. They live streamed an hour of warm-up, body conditioning and catchup from the Artistic Director’s sitting room, using their portable dance flooring and a new high quality streaming camera. Music was streamed on Bluetooth from an iPhone to a soundbar. The complimentary sessions were very popular, and helped people get through the summer when schools and colleges were closed. In September Lantern restarted in-person sessions at the Paradise Centre, which has a full array of Covid-secure measures in place, including a limit of 10 participants in the dance studio.

ELY YOUTH CHOIR We are hoping to re-start in-person sessions in November, after having Zoom sessions since June. Ely Youth Choir, the city’s free non auditioned choir for people of secondary school age, also had to abandon a busy planned programme of events due to lockdown. They started Zoom sessions in mid-June, with the choir’s Musical Director running a full hour of highly effective practice, despite having all participants having to be muted on Zoom! It was fun and surprisingly good to do. The choir has continued to meet on Zoom in September and October, and is planning a return to in-person meetings at St. Mary’s Church Hall in November, following a lot of work by the church and the choir on allowing this vital youth activity to resume there safely. Luckily, youth activities are exempt from the Rule of Six, so with careful planning and management, soon Ely Youth Choir may be planning a live streamed concert!

SUCCESS FOR ADELE AND LULU! A KING’S Ely student and skilful horse rider has qualified for the National Schools Equestrian Association’s (NSEA) Show Jumping Championships.

Lantern reconfigured its two weekly classes to suit the new situation and added a live stream from the studio on Zoom for those who were still shielding but were keen to get back to dance. Both classes are full and running well. People tell us they’re really happy to be back, that it’s given them something more to look forward to and that without it they had felt much more isolated. Those taking part on Zoom can also share something of the fun of training together. We’re delighted that people are so aware of the good it’s doing them!

Adele Shaw, who is in Year 10 at King’s Ely Senior, competed in the qualifiers with her pony, Lulu. The duo were on top form, winning the 1m 10cm class, and as a result will be competing in the National Championships at Addington Equestrian in Buckinghamshire in April next year. www.kingsely.org

ELY ROCK EELS As soon as lockdown began, Ely Rock Eels (ERE) put their usual rock painting calendar of events on hold. Instead, the national rock painting group made contact with hospitals and hospices which were treating Covid patients. “This suited us down to the ground,” said Fleur, “because Rockers wanted to paint - especially as they themselves were at home - and joining the Comfort Pebbles movement gave us very strict rules to follow so we knew that everyone would be safe.” Participating Rockers were asked to sanitise their rocks before and after sealing. In stead of the usual secret dropping around Ely, the rocks were then parcelled up and sent to hospitals which were participating in the scheme. The idea was that the Comfort Pebbles would include a personal message from family members who were unable to visit their loved ones. Upon receipt, the hospital sterilised the rocks which had to be palm-sized so that the patient could hold them making a tangible link with family - a Comfort Pebble.

LIONS OF LITTLEPORT Littleport Lions Club were asked by Adams Heritage Centre in Littleport, Cambs, to decorate their main window. As it is the 10th anniversary of the formation of the club we saw it as a challenge to brighten up the window and local area in these strange and bewildering times. Our President, Ann Ransley, came up with the plan for the window to promote the club and show what Lions undertake. We hope that the window depicts all of the diverse things Lions are involved with. Unfortunately because of the present situation most of our activities are currently curtailed. We have plans to make up children’s Christmas gifts to be distributed locally and have been supporting the local foodbank. Adams Heritage Centre was formally an Ironmongers and Builders merchants and when it closed local people came together to preserve this precious building which is now used to benefit the community and has been kept as original as possible depicting times gone by. We are a friendly club who are supporting each other and are still here to support the community as best as we are able to. ELY & DISTRICT CHRISTIANS AGAINST POVERTY (CAP) DEBT CENTRE IS AGAIN HELPING LOCAL PEOPLE ON THEIR JOURNEY OUT OF DEBT AFTER HAVING TO SUSPEND ITS OPERATIONS DURING THE LOCKDOWN. The CAP system works through 3 appointments with each client, and before the pandemic they took place in the client’s home. With visits to home prohibited, a new procedure had to be created by CAP head office and approved by the Financial Conduct Authority before being introduced across CAP’s 285 Debt Centres. With the slight easing of the lockdown restrictions Ely CAP is now up and running again using a mixture of phone and face to face appointments. The first appointment, which is an introduction to CAP, now usually takes place over the phone. The second appointment, which has more content, takes place in a neutral venue with space to socially distance and have privacy- for example in a church room, and masks are worn. In this appointment the CAP debt coach gathers all the information that is needed by CAP head office to

42 42 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

formulate options for the client to become debt free and create a budget that works for the client. In the third appointment the debt coach explains the options available and the client then decides which one to take. This takes place by phone or in person depending on the client’s preference. John Hociej, Ely CAP Debt Centre Manager said: ‘Our aim is to bring hope back into the lives of those suffering with the burden of debt. The service we offer, which is completely free of charge, has helped many people in the past three years, with 30% of our clients becoming debt free’. DO YOU WANT TO SEE MORE OUTDOOR PLAY FACILITIES FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF ELY? PARENTS campaigning for a splash pad in Ely have presented their case to the City and District Councils in a bid to improve outdoor recreational facilities for families. A Working Group is now being set up to explore the proposals in more detail.

A statement from Ely City Council said: "At their recent Full Council meeting, the City of Ely Council agreed to form a Working Group to look at the requests it has received for additional recreational facilities within Ely for a splash pad, a skatepark and a BMX track.

A splash pad is an interactive outdoor water play park where children and young people can run through fountains, activate exciting features such as sprinklers, and build confidence in the water. Suitable for toddlers to teens, splash pads are designed with safety and environmental considerations in mind and maximise the value of existing outdoor recreational spaces. The nearest splash pad is in Newmarket, which means Ely families have to travel outside the area in order to access outdoor water play facilities.

SUPPORT THE SPLASH PAD CAMPAIGN Residents are invited to support the campaign via the group's Facebook page, where you can keep up with progress and comment. https://www.facebook.com/splashpadforely/

Ely’s children are ready for a splash pad!!

Splash Pad for Ely, a small group of residents coordinated by Angela Haylock from the What's Your Game Project, have now presented their extensive research to both City of Ely Council and East Cambridgeshire District Council. Earlier this year, the group gained over 2,000 signatures in a petition to support their campaign. At its meeting on September 7th, City of Ely Council agreed to set up a Working Group to consider the proposal for a new splash pad alongside other outdoor amenities and further explore the financial implications. 44 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

LIGHT & LIFE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY TEAM The Light and Life team, loved by school children all over the area for their lively Christian assembly presentations have managed to continue offering their story telling skills to schools by videoing what they do at home. Social distancing isn't an issue for them, as Peter and Jackie are husband and wife. They have turned their study into a recording studio - even using the garden on occasion ( weather permitting) so that they can offer their assemblies via YouTube links sent to schools. Of course, Benny the chimp and Tommy and Sasha are also members of the family and can participate in the recordings too.

SILVER OAK

ELY INDEPENDENTS

It is so wonderful to have some good news at this challenging time for small independents!

SUSHI AND SALAD Josh Held, the Cambridge Chef and former General Manager of 68 Market St, the acclaimed Ely Independent restaurant, is working with Silver Oak Coffee on a new option for Ely foodies. Silver Oak Coffee currently run the speciality coffee ‘Rig’ on Ely Market, the trailer with gazebos and roof seating that has become such an iconic part of Ely – called ‘a modern social hub’ by the Sunday Times. Now, we hear they have taken over Tea for Two, on the Buttermarket.

When is a bookshop not a bookshop? When it’s a sushi bar, well almost! The new owner of Sushi and Salad is master chef Juliana. She comes to Ely with a wealth of experience running restaurants in her native Brazil and here in the UK. “I’m so excited to be bringing sushi and salad to Ely. We are all about healthy food, using fresh fish and local ingredients as well as employing and training local people.” said Juliana

Susanne Stent, of Silver Oak, said ‘We have always wanted a food offering at Silver Oak to add to the seriously foodie reputation our great market now has. When we heard that Josh was up for a new project, we tasted his bagel ideas and were blown away by his ability to make the humble sandwich into an event’. Josh makes all his own sauces, pickles, jams, seitan, smokes his own meat and has great contacts with exceptional local foods producers. He has even produced an espresso and maple bacon for Silver Oak using their own coffee.” The Bagel Bar will offer an exciting breakfast and lunch menu and home delivery on orders too. All seating is outdoors, well spaced out and with excellent track and trace measures and, as we know, this means a safe environment for people to enjoy. Let’s hope the for fine winter weather! Follow Silver Oak on Facebook for up-to-date news on the progress of this TASTY addition to Ely’s city centre. https://www.facebook.com/silveroakcoffee/ 46 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

There is no firm date as yet for the launch but by the look of things it won’t be long. The decor is fresh and natural with just a hint of a retro diner feel. And this is all very much in keeping with the healthy and ‘clean eating’ menu too.

ELY INDEPENDENTS GET TO KNOW YOUR SUSHI! during her 25 years she was a champion of local history writers and children’s literature. Burrows sponsored the 501 competition in partnership with fellow independent shop owner, David Learner of Mr Simms Sweet shop which sadly closed its doors in 2018. Annabelle can still be seen behind the counter at Burrows newsagents on the High Street another long serving independent Ely shop.

Annabelle in her shop with local historian author and city councillor, Mike Rouse, And finally.....to complete the rejuvenation of High St Passage, Pure Ely Aesthetics Clinic & Training Academy have moved in on the opposite side. Customers are already raving with great reviews for beauty treatments on their Facebook page. Check it out. https://www.facebook.com/pureelyaesthetics/ Sushi and Salad are still recruiting staff so if you think you have what it takes to learn the art of sushi or to be on front house then do give Juliana a ring on: 07770514151 to find out more. Full training will be given. We wish Juliana and her Ely team all the best for the future. Keep an eye on Facebook and local news to hear more about opening times.

THANK YOU BURROWS! As most locals will know, the Sushi and salad premises was previously occupied by Burrows Bookshop but after 25 years of happy trading, owner, Annabelle decided it was the right time for a change and closed to pursue other projects just over a year ago in 2019. A spookily serendipitous move given how difficult this year has been for local traders! Annabelle’s time in High Street Passage was such a wonderful era with her well known shop being ‘literally’ the main box office for all the amateur dramatic shows in the area and

With the fabulous Sew Much To Do, The Treasure Chest and Uclassy gift shops, the traditional fare of Boswell’s Bakery, gifts and massage treatments at PositivEly Treated and the Italian Jeweller, this little street has returned as one of the most exciting and dynamic parts of Ely. The Elyi is proud to have them as neighbours. A really positive bunch of people in what has been a very dark depressing year for many local shops. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 47
