I’m very pleased to be bringing you this Nov/ Dec issue. We head into the festive season with quite a few group celebrations. Both Sing Choirs and KD Theatre are celebrating a 10-year anniversary of music making and panto magic respectively and Ely City Band have been serving the community with their music since 1962 – 60 years! Their presence always lifts any city occasion and as usual you will be able to hear them playing on the market this Christmas. Congratulations to these long serving groups who enrich our city life!
We have some new advertisers - welcome to them and thank you to all our supporters who pay for space in the magazine. This allows us to shine a light on good causes and non-profit groups. Many charities are still recovering from the pandemic where usual fundraising was impossible. It's lovely to see that now, 32 months on since the first lockdown, our local groups and meets are well and truly humming again.
Finally, we send our very best wishes for a successful evening on Bonfire Night to Ely Community Events Team. It is no small feat organising the Ely Firework event. Hope to see you there!

Father Christmas is taking time out of his busy schedule to make his annual visit to the museum on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th December. At this popular annual event, children can meet the real Father Christmas in his grotto, share their wish lists with him and receive a special gift too. Also on the day, enjoy crafts, trails and a chance to explore the museum too.
Tickets, which are £5 per child, are sold on the door so there is no need to pre-book. Find out more at www.elymuseum.org.uk
Ely Museum would also like to thank the elves at the City Cycle Centre for their generous support of our grotto each year. “
Would you be interested in being a governor at Ely St John’s Community Primary School? We have a vacancy for a co-opted governor who is not a parent of a child at the school.
Are you interested in education and how schools work? Would you like to make a positive difference to the life chances of children? Do you want to share your skills to make that difference? Would you enjoy being part of a team who provide critical challenge and support to the leadership team whose aim is driving up standards?
Being a governor is a real commitment but is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. The best way to find out about the role and why people do it is to talk to someone who is already a governor or discuss it with John Henson, the Head Teacher, who will be only too happy to talk to you.
Schools look for a variety of experience and skills across their governing skills, eg education, finance, community, HR or business. Training is important for all governors and is readily available.
Does this role interest you? Do you want to find out more information: If so, take the first step and contact us on office@elystjohns.cambs.sch. uk and express your interest? We will be pleased to talk to you and will send you all the information you need to make the decision whether to apply. Selection is undertaken by our Governing Body. Get in touch...

After the trials and tribulations of the pandemic, Ely Food Station has enjoyed a recent facelift. The new-look facility located on Platform 1 of the railway station is open for 12 hours daily, seven days a week, serving a selection of coffees and teas alongside a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the day.
Customers can enjoy a hot bacon or breakfast roll on their way to the trains or a selection of baguettes, cakes, muffins, flapjacks and confectionery.
Following the refurbishment, access is from either the station car park or the platform.
There is now additional indoor seating for those cold, wet days or picnic benches outside where clients can watch the world go by while enjoying one of the wines or draught beers.
The premium coffee served is Caffe Praego from Rwanda, and a percentage of profits goes to The Point Foundation UK to support the people who actually pick the coffee and labour on the plantations.
The proprietors, Harry and Chris Jupp, are proud to say that for every day Ely Food Station is open it pays for the education of one Special Needs child in Rwanda. Reminiscent of the bustling tea rooms in the David Lean classic movie Brief Encounter, Ely Food Station is a meeting place for friends and family, departures and arrivals, and a memorable part of every journey.
For further information on Caffe Praego Coffee Company, and Point Foundation UK, go to www.caffe-praego.com
In the run up to Christmas the Rotary Club of Ely will again be taking their usual Sleigh, with of course Father Christmas on board, around the streets of Ely. A door-to-door collection will be taken to provide funds to support charities, good causes and National and International disaster areas. They will be supported by the Rotary Club of Ely Hereward, the Inner Wheel Club of Ely, and volunteers of several Charities and Clubs.
This will be starting on Monday 5th December and continue through all the weekday evenings up to and including Tuesday 20th December. The sleigh will start its journey at 6pm and travel along the streets in the order that will be publicised nearer the time and also posted on their websites and Facebook page. As a few routes are being changed this year particularly around Lynn Road and Kings Avenue please check your night so as not to be disappointed. Make a note of the websites now so that you are ready to check nearer the time. They are www.elyrotary.co.uk & www.rotaryclubely-hereward.org and Facebook at fb.me/elyrotarychristmascollection. Details will also be included about how you can track the Sleigh’s progress each night.
The Sleigh as pictured will also be on Ely High Street on the Saturdays 10th & 17th December between 9.00am and 4.00pm approximately.
On 11th October 2009 the Band was presented with ‘Freedom of the City’ status at a civic service in Ely Cathedral. This was in recognition of all the concerts and parades for the people and organisations of Ely, proudly taking Ely’s name all over East Anglia and London, marching in the Lord Mayors Parade in 1977 and 1979.
A wonderful moment for the band, remembering all the events the band had taken part in and all the people who have been part of the band.
Recently, we played for the Queens Jubilee and at the Kings Proclamation and will be playing carols again this year so look out for us on Ely Market Square in December. (see poster on page 14)
Today the Band is smaller but still making music and entertaining. Mr. Malcolm Fletcher has been with the Band since 1962 and is still playing today.
Our Musical Director Mr. Phil Green has been a member since 1971 and will be guiding the Band through our Christmas Concert, full of Christmas music, with tea and mince pies for everyone to enjoy. We look forward to seeing you.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary call handlers can receive as many as 1,900 calls in just one day. Many of those calls do not require police attention, and plenty of others are reports that could have been resolved using online services. This is why the force are encouraging people to only #CallWhenItCounts, which will reserve call handlers' time on the line for the most serious emergencies. There are plenty of ways to get in touch with police that do not involve calling. Next time you’re about to dial 101, please stop and think:
Could this issue be submitted using an online report, live web chat or would it be better placed with my local council?
Superintendent Mike Branston, Head of Demand, said: “If there is an emergency, we want people to call us confident in the knowledge that we will respond quickly. This is why we want to free up our call takers to deal with serious incidents by asking people with nonemergency inquiries to use our website where there is a wealth of information to assist.
They may be directed to a more appropriate service or could use our online reporting service or webchat as an alternative to calling 101.”
Together with Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s online services, we can ease the pressure on our call handlers. To launch a live web chat, visit: www.cambs.police.uk and click the green ‘chat’ icon in the bottom right of the screen. And to submit a report, visit: www.cambs.police.uk/report. All reports and web chats are dealt with in the same way as 101 calls, and are actually the easiest, most efficient way for people to contact the police in a non-emergency situation.
Ely Wildspace hosted over seventy Year 3 children from Ely St John’s and Ely St Mary’s Primary Schools for a field trip during June and July this year.
The children explored the different habitats and insect life in and around Ely Country Park. The children learnt different techniques for finding, sampling and identifying insects in woodland, meadow, and freshwater ditches and ponds. They tried their hand at sweep-netting and sampling tree foliage with a stick and beating tray, and they learned to use a hand-lens magnifier.
Children found centipedes, shield bugs, blister beetles, bees, wasps, damselflies, hoverflies, mosquito and midge larvae, dragonfly nymphs and whirligig beetles. They were entertained by a "wing-waver" (or "semaphore") fly (pictured) as it signalled to other males and to females.
They learned how to tell the difference between crickets and grasshoppers. The pond life caused lots of excitement with predators and their prey together in white collection trays, making it easy to see what was happening: the spectacle of a Great Diving Beetle larva hunting sticklebacks and newts held a grisly fascination for the children. Lots of the children had never held or examined insects before, and they enjoyed having a school field trip to look at the nature on their doorstep –something that this year group had not been able to do previously because of COVID restrictions. We look forward to welcoming our local primary schools again next year.
Ely Wildspace, a local volunteer-based nature conservation group, receives a grant through Natural England for organising these trips, which provides valuable funds towards maintenance of these sites for nature and the public.

Our local war memorials stand as silent sentinels carrying lists of names. But behind each of those names is a local person with their own unique life story.
Forming part of the new temporary exhibition now on display at Ely Museum is the story and medals of three brothers from the Parker McGee family from Stuntney, who, in a cruel twist of fate, all died on the same day in the First World War. Still complete with the packaging and envelopes that they were delivered in, the medals form a powerful visual reminder of one local family's loss and grief from over 100 years ago.
A Pause to Reflect: the 1922 Unveiling of the War Memorials in Ely examines the creation of two of Ely's main war memorials - the Market Place memorial and the County Memorial in Ely Cathedral. The display includes original documents and objects relating to the days the memorials were unveiled, as well as medals, poignant letters, paperwork and objects that help to tell the stories of some of the men recorded on the memorials. Included in the display is a
selection of enlarged photographs taken during the unveiling ceremonies, showing many of the local people in attendance in fascinating detail.
Felix Jackson, from Ely Museum, states: ”From a fragile handwritten ledger listing those from the area who volunteered in 1914, to hurriedly written letters from the front carrying the first news of the death of a family member, A Pause to Reflect provides a link to the individual human stories behind the names on our memorials.
First unveiled 100 years ago this year, both memorials are now familiar landmarks to residents and visitors to Ely a like, however few people are aware of the stories behind their creation and the names that they commemorate."
A Pause to Reflect is on display at Ely Museum until November 27th and is included in standard entry to the museum or free to annual pass holders.
On Saturday, November 5th, Ely Museum is also holding a Military Family History Day. Visitors will be able to chat to experts on local military history who will also assist with any research questions. People are also invited to bring along any old family military medals, photos, uniform or paperwork that they would like to discover more about.
Following our successful event in August the Ely Guild of Woodturners is hosting another “Art in Wood” exhibition

The City of Ely Council declared a Climate Emergency in December 2019 and finally agreed its Climate and Environment Change Policy in April 2022. Under the care of the Climate and Environment Committee we have now developed an ambitious Action Plan aimed at achieving net zero carbon use by 2045. This is consistent with Cambridgeshire County Council’s Climate Action Plan, which also seeks to be a net zero council by 2030. It covers a huge range of initiatives involving many areas of activity, many outside bodies and, of course, the public.
That said, we own a number of important buildings around the city that are heated by gas, which are thermally inefficient, but are also listed buildings. This is where our main challenge lies in putting any house in order! As a first step we have decided to get some expert advice as to what can be done to improve matters, with the main aim being to improve insulation and to seek alternative heating sources for the Maltings and the Sessions House.
Lessons learnt there can then be rolled out to our other buildings, and, particularly to Oliver Cromwell House. We realize that this will not be easy. Many technologies have limitations, though we will be looking at ground and heat source pumps as possibilities. It seems likely that we would currently have difficulties in gaining planning permission to put solar panels on our buildings. On the other hand, it is becoming apparent that the national electricity grid is reaching capacity limits, and this could stop us using mains electricity as our sole energy source. We may be limited in terms of what we can do to improve the thermal efficiency of these old buildings, and we may also have to consider the way we use and conserve water as a consequence of living in the driest region of the United Kingdom.
However, as part of the process, we felt strongly that we needed to put our own house in order, but that will present us with a huge challenge. We have already undertaken a number of actions over the years that fit well with the green agenda. We fitted LED bulbs to all the street lamps that we own thus saving tax payers money. We have planted trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy in this Jubilee year. We have been assiduous in maintaining the many trees that we already own, and improving our green spaces, particularly around the cemetery and play areas.
Our estates team use environmentally friendly methods, and their equipment is driven by electricity rather than fossil fuels We actively support the provision of increasing numbers of allotments through the City of Ely Allotments and Gardens Association. We have stopped the use of single use plastics and save paper where we can.
All this may seem a daunting challenge for a parish council. But we are not alone, and at least we have a plan.
Cllr Ian LindsayHarold Wilson used to say that a week is a long time in politics. Well, since the production of the last Elyi Magazine we have had a new king and two changes of prime minister!
It was a great honour for me as your Mayor to read aloud the words of the Proclamation outside the west front of the Cathedral; to attend the Act of Remembrance in the Cathedral; and to be present at the laying of a wreath at the War Memorial arranged by the local branch of the Royal British Legion and observe the One Minute Silence.
The business of the council continues and what I want to tell you about is the Community Infrastructure Levy, commonly known as CIL. This is the charged levied by East Cambs District Council on new development. The district council keeps the lion’s share but a proportion is collected by the city council and spent wisely, after consultation, on local amenities.
In recent years we have spent this money on internal decorations at Sessions House, the new pedestrian crossing at Beresford Road, towards the cost of the new retractable seating in The Maltings, and on upgrading play equipment in Cherry Hill Park, High Barns and in the Paradise play area. We have also provided funds for a sensory garden at the cemetery at Beech Lane
engagements have included meeting with this year's Fireworks Committee, attending a sunny Apple Fayre and getting in on the act with KD productions panto launch. It was great not to be the only one in fancy dress for a change!
Richard MorganEAAA is committed to continual training of crews, supporters and members of the public in early application of CPR – cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Whilst many, particularly members of the emergency services, will be familiar with this, others will be much less so, or have no knowledge of it at all.
Please take a few moments to acquaint yourself with the Casualty Assessment Procedure, namely:-
Danger – firstly ensure your own safety – be aware of any danger to yourself, the patient and any bystanders
Response – check the patient for response –shake their shoulders and ask “are you alright?”
Airway – open the airway and ensure it is clear. Place your hand on their forehead and, with other fingers under the chin, tilt back the head
Breathing – Check for normal breathing for 10 seconds. If they are not breathing cal 999, 112 or send another to call and to bring a defibrillator if possible
CPR – Start chest compressions and, if trained, combine with rescue breaths – 30 compressions 2 rescue breaths.
Hopefully, soon you will be joined by ‘early responders’ from the emergency services, including East Anglian Air Ambulance, who will take over responsibility to continue the treatment. Wherever you are, it is always a good idea to ascertain where an accessible defibrillator is located – in your local community or away from home.
EAAA Community Mission is simple – we want to save more lives and minimise the impact of trauma and medical emergencies in the community. To all who support our mission –thank you – and, to those yet to do so, there are many ways in which you might help – please get in touch – info@eaaa.org.uk
Together, with your help, we can save more lives. Michael White

Àngels goes above and beyond to try and give cancer sufferers and their carers an hour of togetherness with different people coming to talk to us”.

Talking with people who understand what we are going through is so reassuring and the extra activities are proving to be very helpful too. Thank you, Oasis, your name is just right.”

Christmas is the busiest time of year for KD Theatre Productions with pantomime forming a large part of the company's work with KD providing spectacular, fresh and exciting festive productions at The Maltings (Ely), Harlow Playhouse (Essex), Saffron Hall (Essex) and The Grange Theatre (Northwich).
Co-founders Katherine Hickmott & Daniel Bell, KD Theatre Productions are celebrating 10 years in business - show business that is! They have built a strong reputation since forming in 2013 and now present a variety of high quality, innovative and classy productions at venues across the UK.
KD also cater for the younger market providing children’s Santa Shows in Studio Venues across the UK which are highly interactive encouraging younger families to come to the theatre. Alongside these productions, KD also provides theatrical services for other companies and theatres including production and script hires.
Touring family theatre has become a major part of the companies’ annual calendar with productions of ‘The Wizard Of Oz’, ‘Treasure Island’,’ The Wind In The Willows’, ‘Alice In Wonderland’ and ‘Peter Pan’ touring venues and open-air spaces across the UK during Spring, Summer and Autumn holidays over the past few years.
KD Theatre Productions work with creatives, actors and production staff at the top of their game to ensure they are providing the most magical and exhilarating experiences for all their audiences.
Alongside their producing work, Katherine & Daniel are extremely passionate about providing quality, affordable and professional performing arts training for young people and manage
extremely popular academies under the banner of ‘KD Academy’ training over 200 enthusiastic young people on a weekly basis.
Katherine and Daniel took time out of their busy schedule to answer a few of our questions reflecting on their 10 years of Panto at the Maltings, Ely.
How does it feel to celebrate 10 years of pantomime at The Maltings in Ely?
It feels amazing to be celebrating our tenth year! It’s gone so quickly! Every year we feel so incredibly lucky to be doing what we do, but the pressure gets bigger each year to make sure we make the show bigger and better! We love Ely, it’s our home City! Our audiences mean a great deal to us! We wouldn’t be where we are without their support!
What’s your favourite memory of Ely pantomime over the last 10 years?
There are so many wonderful memories! One that really sticks out is how we managed to put
together a full-scale pantomime within 3 months (it usually takes over a year) during the year of ‘lock down’! When they said theatres could reopen (albeit with lots of restrictions) we worked around the clock to deliver a show! Sadly, we got shut down halfway through because of the 3rd lock down, but it was a great sense of achievement!
What have you learnt over the last ten years as the pantomime producers at The Maltings?
We never stop learning as Producers! Every day is a school day! We are always learning about our audiences and what they want from their pantomime, but also from an arts point of view in the area! We do a lot of outreach projects and work with young people through our academies! They teach us so much about what our shows should represent!
What has changed in the last 10 years?
So much has changed over the last 10 years! We’ve learnt so much about our work, and how we create shows that represent the world we live in today! It’s ever-changing! But fundamentally, our core values of creating high quality, affordable family entertainment has remained at the heart of what we do.
How do you create the Ely pantomime magic? Now that’s a secret! We fret all year about it as we strive to surprise our audiences with new things each year! The pantomime means a huge deal to us! We never take it for granted. We have an amazing team around us of costume makers, scenery builders, painters, musicians, actors, writers…. the list is endless! There’s 100’s of
people who work throughout the year to create the magic! They are like Santa’s elves! It’s Christmas all year round!
What’s your favourite pantomime story?
They are all great stories! We love the ones that are full adventure and recently we’ve enjoyed playing around with the stories slightly bringing them up to date and adding a modern twist whilst keeping true to the traditions of pantomime!
What’s the first panto you both saw?
The first pantomime Daniel saw was the local pantomime his grandma was the Musical Director for. He sat in the pit night after night and became mesmerised! Katherine’s was at the Cambridge Arts Theatre with the panto legend Christopher Biggins!
You’re obviously a strong team to have lasted 10 years together, not just in Ely but at venues across the UK, but how did you meet?
We have been best friends since Primary School!
Still to this day, we can switch off, close the laptops and sit and chat as friends! We know each other inside out! There’s never a day goes by where we don’t laugh! We love our work!
What are the top 3 ingredients to make a panto?
Magic! Comedy! Spectacle!
What are you both most looking forward to in this 10th anniversary pantomime year?
Well we’ve chosen the most popular panto title of them all, ‘Cinderella!’ so that is very exciting! We are also looking forward to celebrating everything pantomime throughout the show! It’s jam packed this year! We can’t wait!

also conducting safe time exchanges and social activities within our own bubbles. For further info please email littleportandelytimebank@btinternet.com or visit Facebook: @LittleportandElyTimebank
We are a uniformed youth organisation for girls aged 5-18. Through fun, friendship, challenge and adventure we empower girls to find their voice, inspiring them to discover the best in themselves and to make a positive difference in their community. We also are seeking more volunteers to help provide these opportunities. Contact: Alexa and Jenny - GGElyCity@gmail.com https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/
