So many people are using the magazine now that it is quite a task to try to fit people in. Do you give a little space to lots of people or lots of space to a few people? It is a very happy problem to have and we are always working to get the balance right. We are really pleased that most of our non-profit groups are now used to the small charge we make to help with printing costs. They get a special charity rate as we realise budgets are small and it is all the community info they supply that makes the magazine so attractive to business advertisers. They know it is being read by you lovely lot. Please support them in return by using local businesses when you can! The annual Ely Fireworks event will take place on Cherry Hill Park on Saturday 10th November 2018 from 5.30pm. All proceeds to local charities! The Guy Fawkes competition will be judged by the Mayor of Ely at 6.00pm and the bonfire lit at 6.30pm. The Fireworks spectacular starts at 7.00pm. We hope to see you there! (or at least walk past you in the dark!) best wishes

ELY MAYOR
NEWS and ENGAGEMENTS
What do Fenprobe, Lions Club of Littleport, K9 Project, Ely Soup, Therapy Dogs, New Connexions Church High Barns, Ely-Ribe Association, Ely Heroes, Ely Air Cadets, Prickwillow Drainage Museum Trust, Ely Amnesty International all have in common? They are just some of the organisations that we have visited during the last two months and they are all full of volunteers who help to make Ely such a strong and caring community. The role of Mayor involves going to grand occasions like the Ely Standard Business Awards, great local events like the Prickwillow Ploughing Festival and once in a lifetime events like the opening of the amazing new Dojima Sake Brewery at Fordham, with civic visits to neighbouring authorities, but just as importantly attending as many local Ely events as possible.
We are always delighted to receive invitations where it involves meeting young people like presenting the certificates at Ely Library to all the children who took part in the very successful summer reading challenge, attending the Spring Meadow Harvest Festival, or Ely Air Cadets Open Evening. The future of our country, never mind just the city, depends on our young people growing up to be confident in their abilities and realising they can make a significant contribution to society.
I am dedicated to promoting Ely as a strong, welcoming, inclusive city and all the clubs and organisations that, for example, are listed in the Elyi, all make a vital contribution to that aim.
On the 11th of November this year there will be hugely significant commemoration of the peace at the end of World War One in 1918. There will be the customary service in Ely Cathedral followed by the Royal British Legion traditional wreath laying at the Market Place war memorial, but in addition this year in the evening at 7pm we will be lighting a beacon at St Mary’s Green, ringing the parish church bells of St Mary’s and inviting everyone to gather to remember the sacrifice of previous generations and the hope of future peace for our young people. Please join us if you can.

In commemoration and remembrance of the end of the war and the many millions who were killed or came home dreadfully wounded, 1000 Beacons of Light will be lit at 7pm on 11th November 2018 throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories - a century after the guns fell silent. The event will also commemorate the huge army of men and women on the home front who, often in dangerous and exhausting conditions, underpinned the war effort keeping the wheels of industry turning, bringing the harvests home to ensure the nation did not starve. The Beacons will symbolise the 'light of hope' that emerged from the darkness of war. The Beacon in Ely will be lit at 7pm on the evening of 11th November 2018 on St Mary’s Green, St Mary’s Street, Ely. Everyone is welcome to attend the commemorations. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 5
ELY MUSEUM

Emily Allen Custodian at Ely Museum On the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, we remember the Armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France. This marked the end of the hostilities on the Western Front of World War I in 1918. This year, we mark the centenary of the end of one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. The Cambridgeshire regiment served in France and Flanders during the Great War, gaining 27 honours for their service. After arriving in France on the 15th February 1915, they suffered their first loss, that of Cpl Dewey, just 3 weeks into their tour. The Regiment suffered the loss of 77 officers and 798 soldiers of the Regiment were killed in action or died as a result of their wounds, a further 3458 wounded in action. In 1922 the Ely Market Place War Memorial was unveiled officially by Major General Sir S. W. Hare KCMB CB. It recorded the 165 names of men from the parishes of Ely St. Mary & Ely Holy Trinity who gave their lives between 1914-19. Prior to this in July 1917, a temporary War Memorial was put up on the almonry garden side of the market place, though there were several suggestions put forward to commemorate the fallen soldiers such as a cottage hospital and even a swimming bath.
Officers of the 1st Cambridgeshire Regiment, 1923 This year at Ely Museum to mark the centenary, we will be making several improvements to our World War Gallery, including the display of one of our newest acquisitions, the recently conserved King’s Colour of the 11th Cambridgeshire Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. Please visit our website or social media pages for further details of our upcoming events relating to the end of the war, including a free open day and family history event. emily@elymuseum.org.uk 01353 666655 www.ElyMuseum.org.uk www.facebook.com/ElyMuseum www.twitter.com/ElyMuseum www.instagram.com/Ely_Museum

JOURNEY'S END
a commemorative performance by Ely Drama Society
8TH - 10TH NOVEMBER 2018 To commemorate the centenary of the end of The First World War, Ely Amateur Dramatic Society is putting on a production of R.C. Sherriff’s ‘Journey’s End’ at Ely Maltings on the 8th, 9th and 10th of November 2018.
The production features some excellent costume and set pieces reflecting the era, taking the audience back to those dark days on the front.
The play is based on R.C. Sherriff’s real-life experiences during the war. He was an officer in the East Surrey Regiment and wounded in the battle of Passchendaele in 1917. In the play Captain Stanhope is nervous and exhausted after three years on the front line. Now, as he and his officers sit in their dug-out awaiting attack, the full horror and futility of trench warfare unfolds.
Tickets costs £12 (with a 0.95p online booking fee) and are available from Burrows Bookshop, 01353 669759 or online at: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/elyamateurdramaticsociety. Show starts at 7.30pm.
ELY AT THE FRONT www.elyww1.net - a fantastic website devoted to telling the stories of Ely men and women during World War 1 - well worth a visit. Local resident, Shirley Hall is a keen family historian and was involved in a project to research all the men on the memorial in her home town of Folkestone. After attending one Ely Memorial Ceremony she decided to start a similar project here in Ely. The original intention was to just tell the stories of the men on the memorial, but after spending her weekends trawling through the Ely Standard in Ely library, other names and stories attracted her attention and the concept grew. The Ely WW1 website that she began is now attracting about 150 visitors a week from all over the world - many looking for members of their own families. During the research process at least another forty names in addition to those included on the Market Place monument were discovered. The website also expanded to include details of those who were injured and survived, those who were decorated and those who spent most of the conflict as Prisoners of War.
The website is a wonderful archive of information about Ely at that time, with articles on how local people survived. There are letters written home from the front, information on the Belgian Refugees stationed here, The VAD Hospital and how it operated. The threat of Air raids was very real and the council debated lighting in the City of Ely, as they feared that if the city was ablaze with lights it would stand out amidst the darkness of the surrounding Fen and be a prime target for German raiders. The signal for an imminent air raid how it was agreed that the signal would be the sounding of the Jam Factory’s hooter (the factory was on Bray’s Lane). Do go and browse the archive at www.elyww1.net It is a worthy tribute to the people of Ely in wartime. The project continues so comments and further information from readers to improve the website and its contents are very welcome.. email: ww1ely@gmail.com

Make Some Noise!
The New Ely Area Music Centre will help take young musicians to the next level. Weekly sessions to help develop young musicians’ orchestral skills Students, many of whom do not have access to school orchestras, will be able to rehearse together with support from experienced professionals. A new venture for young musicians who want to take their music to greater heights by playing in a proper ensemble is now operating in Ely. The Ely Area Music Centre is on Saturday mornings during term time. It is open to school-age students who have reached at least Grade 2 on an orchestral instrument and the first session is completely free to attend. Each week, students will have the chance to develop their technical skills with professional musicians, rehearse and perform as part of a full orchestra, and work with young people from other schools who love making music just as much as they do. The Centre is being run by Cambridgeshire Music, the county’s music education hub, which organises thousands of music lessons and projects for young people and their families throughout Cambridgeshire. It has been set up in partnership with King’s Ely, who will be providing the Morbey Hall for rehearsals. Although there is already a popular Area Music Centre in Cambridge, organisers say that there has been growing demand for a similar initiative for young players in Ely and the surrounding communities. Cambridgeshire Music Development Manager Helen Allen, who teaches music in Ely and will be leading the Centre, said: “Many children in the area
have very limited opportunities to play music with others and accessing the ensembles that are run in Cambridge is often not practical. “The Area Music Centre is all about getting them together and developing their ensemble skills with the support of experienced, professional musicians. By the end of the year, they will have grown as musicians, made new friends, and learned how to play some really exciting, challenging music together.” A full programme of rehearsals and repertoire has been lined up for all three terms of the 2018/19 academic year, and organisers are expecting around 30 to 40 children to join the new Centre, although there is no limit on numbers. To get involved, students need to be able to play an orchestral instrument at Grade 2 to 6 and be able to read music. They also need to be able to get to King’s Ely in time for a 10am start on Saturdays. Each of the weekly sessions will see students working in specialist groups focusing on woodwind, string, brass or percussion during the first half of the morning, before coming together to play as a full orchestra during the second half. This term’s repertoire is built around a theme of “Magic and Mystery”. Students will learn wellknown pieces from Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, P. T. Barnum biopic The Greatest Showman, and The Nutcracker, building up to an end-of-term performance for parents and friends. The Ely Area Music Centre will be running at King’s Ely Junior School, Barton Road, Ely, CB7 4DB, from 10am to 12.30pm every Saturday. Anyone is welcome to attend and the opening session is free. For further information about the Centre, please visit the Cambridgeshire Music website: www.cambridgeshiremusic.org.uk/pages/discovermusic/bands-and-clubs/ely-area-music-centre.html

On Saturday 15th September over a hundred members of the local University of the Third Age gathered at the Needham Hall to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ely U3A. The room was decked with bunting and balloons and proceedings were opened by the Mayor. The Melody Brooker Quintet played a selection of well-known tunes.
For more information please contact: Allison Morris – allisonmorris265@hotmail.com
On show were a range of pictures depicting some of the 54 groups over the last ten years. To prove how techy some members are there was also a slide show of images showing on screens for members to enjoy. Various comments were heard ranging from… “I remember that walk – the meal was very good at that pub” “It was an interesting visit and where did they find that picture of our fancy dress Christmas lunch?” When the buffet was served a gentle hubbub of friends talking was again backed by music. The lure of the sandwiches and cakes meant most members chose to hum along rather than dance but toes could be seen tapping along to the band under the tables. The afternoon was rounded off by the introduction of the present and past Chairmen (the only lady being away on family business) then the Mayor and current Chairman cut the cake. The cake was declared delicious and served with a glass of Prosecco for the toast of – Ely U3A, to the next ten years. Then it was time for members to take their leave, looking forward to the coming week with the physical or mental challenge of their own particular group.

Review: “Perfect pitstop while you shop!” Clare Thompson is a busy lady! Not content with already running a very successful business and market stall selling bespoke gifts and hampers, she has now opened her lovely new cafe at Sharman’s Garden Centre. Aptly named “Clare’s Kitchen” it serves delicious hot food and beverages all day. The light and airy seating area is perfect for a light lunch while shopping and one of the best reasons to stop off and see what Sharman’s Garden Centre has to offer.

NOTES FOR SINGERS No, not the first in a series of articles for wannabes, but the title of a new book on singing, written by Ely-based singing teacher Chris Knowles, to be published by The Book Guild on 28th November (in time for Christmas!). Chris has spent a lifetime working in professional music. After a dozen years in the choir stalls (Trinity College Cambridge, Winchester and Salisbury Cathedrals), he worked for a decade as a freelance baritone, initially with the BBC Singers and then at Kent Opera, the Royal Opera House and Opera North before turning his collar and spending just short of thirty years as director of an international agency for singers, conductors and directors. So, he has experienced singing at the highest level on both sides of the curtain. Teaching singing is an on-going passion and takes him weekly to Cambridge, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. He also has a studio in Ely. Notes for Singers invites singers to think through familiar aspects of their singing in ways they may never have considered before. Contrary to much current practice, singing is not about doing, but 34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
about thinking, feeling and creating the right circumstances for our voices to work in. Chris offers ways to re-think our approach, allowing our voices to work naturally. Singers often attribute their technical difficulties to breathing problems, but breathing plays only a secondary role: singing develops breathing, not breathing singing. If the mental approach to singing is right, the breath will largely take care of itself. Available on Amazon & in all good bookshops.

Yoga for Mental and Physical Wellbeing Do you want to feel stronger and more flexible? Do you want to let go of tension and learn how to de-stress? Would you like to think more clearly, be calmer and step off the emotional roller-coaster? Some activities offer a few of these benefits; yoga offers them all.
Many people tell me that they could not possibly attend a yoga class because they are far too stiff. Newsflash: yoga is for you! Through the intelligent and sensitive adaptation of postures everyone is included: young and old, the fit and those with health problems, able-bodied or those with a disability. The class environment is inclusive and non-competitive, and every practice is based on mindful, breath-led movement.
Athletes and Sports People class is aimed at those who wish to tap into the power of yoga to enhance sporting performance, and aid recovery. This summer, my wife, Laura and I moved from Welney to Ely, and I ran some free Pop-Up yoga classes in Ely Country Park. I hope to do the same next summer, but this time near our magnificent cathedral. All classes take place in central Ely. If you would like to join one please call me on 01353 610791 or 07782413146 or email paulfoxashtanga@ hotmail.com Paul Fox
One way of meeting everyone’s needs is to offer different types of classes. My Yoga for Every Body class is for everyone, and includes meditation, mindfulness and breathing practices alongside posture work, relaxation and yoga philosophy insights for happiness. In the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga class, dynamic, flowing yoga is explored for more physically able students. The Yoga for www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 35

How active are you? Can you keep up with the kids? Can you get up the stairs without getting breathless? Let’s Get Moving Cambridgeshire is a Public Health funded project which aims to help improve the health of the Cambridgeshire population, specifically by increasing levels of physical activity. This is being done by promoting existing opportunities, developing new initiatives and supporting individuals who require support to achieve their goals. Did you know that 4 in 10 middle aged adults in this country don’t even get out for a brisk 10 minute walk once a month? Or that inactivity accounts for 1 in 6 premature deaths, the same as smoking? It won’t be a surprise to know that getting more physical activity into our lives could improve the physical and mental health of the nation...just a brisk 10 minute walk a day can positively benefit your health. If you need support to become more active, would like to get involved in setting up a new activity in your area, if you have a club or a physical activity
group that you would like us to help promote, or would like some more information about Let’s Get Moving Cambridgeshire, sign up via the website: www.letsgetmovingcambridgeshire.co.uk/join-in or contact: Sophie Edwards, the coordinator for East Cambs Tel: 01353 616348 Email: sophie.edwards@eastcambs.gov.uk Facebook: @ LetsGetMovingEastCambs www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 39

Want to treat yourself to the best turkey for Christmas? Why not try one of our Free Range Norfolk Black Turkeys www.freerangechristmasturkey.co.uk
Why are our turkeys so amazing?
They are slow growing – allowed to mature as nature intended They are free range – allowed to exhibit natural behaviours They put down a good layer of fat – meaning they are self-basting They are hand plucked – someone has taken the time to carefully prepare your bird They are dry aged – they have hung for a minimum of 7 days allowing the flavour to develop
And don’t just take our word for it, here is some feedback from some of our wonderful customers: “For 32 years of married life we have had the obligatory turkey at Christmas although we always complain it is dry and tasteless. Not this year – thank you for an absolutely fantastic turkey – tasty and moist. We’ll be back again next year!” - Nick “I have been meaning to write and say how much we thoroughly enjoyed our turkey. It is the first time we bought through yourselves and I can honestly say it is the best turkey we have ever had. I look forward to ordering from you again in the future.” – Kathleen Make sure you don’t miss out, why not order one from our website today? www.freerangechristmasturkey.co.uk

DAME TROTT SPILLS THE BEANS ON HOW TO GROW A BEANSTALK! Dame Trott takes some time out of her busy day running the farm to give us some of her top tips on growing a Beanstalk. 1)Sell a cow or something similar (and I mean the animal type)! Well how else are you going to get your magic beans? 2)Find a good vegetable patch or soft area of soil to plant the beans! A good foundation is always key – just like my make-up dears! 3)Remember to water the beans! If you don’t have a Giant who showers daily, find an alternative water source such as a giant water pistol! Is there still a hose ban? One of them may work. 4)As well as water you’ll needs lots of sun, we’ve had a lot of that this year with the heat wave! You should see my tan dears! Happy growing my darlings! And don’t go climbing them – you don’t want to run into any Giants now!
This year’s pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk ’ runs from the 14th Decem ber 2018 – 2nd Januar y 2019. To book tickets online visit www.kdtheatre.c o.uk or call the Box Office on 01353 725026

A TREAT FOR FANS OF PINK FLOYD, IAN DRURY, AUDIO SLAVE, BIFFY CLYRO, 10CC, CRANBERRIES, STEVE MILLER AND MUSE “We want to let music fans know that we’re planning this exhibition just before Christmas. Sign up to our Facebook page and newsletter to find out more about the exhibition and special events:www.facebook.com/babylonartscentre” says Caroline Cawley from Babylon ARTS
Babylon ARTS is planning to stage an impressive exhibition of album art at its riverside gallery. The exhibition will be officially launched on Saturday 17th November and run through to Saturday 22nd December. The exhibition will feature work by the muchcelebrated Storm Thorgerson and StormStudios. He is described as ‘the man who designed half your record collection’. Although many will not know Storm by name, his iconic designs appear on the album covers of some of the world’s most famous bands. The exhibition will be free to attend and hosted by the Babylon Gallery in Ely, which attracts over 25,000 visitors a year.
“We first met Storm back in 2009 when following a phone call from him out of the blue we hosted an exhibition of some of his best known photographs. Storm had a special connection to Cambridgeshire – it was his stomping ground. He attended both primary and high schools in Cambridge (Brunswick Primary School and the Cambridgeshire High School for Boys), and would often hang out in Ely with his friends.Following the V&A exhibition last year which featured a large proportion of his work, we think it’s time to bring Storm back to Cambridgeshire.” The exhibition at the Babylon Gallery is set to feature a range of Storm’s work created throughout his 30 year career with Storm Studios with many hand-signed limited editions. The exhibition will also feature the cover from Biffy Clyro which was the last album sleeve conceived by Storm, and poignantly was photographed on the day he died in 2013. Music fans will be able to buy limited edition prints books, and other work created by this immensely talented designer. Please contact Babylon Arts Tel: 01353 616991. Every year hundreds of cheery-faced runners complete a push-chair friendly 5K route, which includes partial road closures and winds around the City’s historical streets and riverside. Last year spectators were entertained as they cheered on dozens of Santa’s and tinsel-tousled fairies, Christmas puddings and elves, reindeer, pieces of stripy rock and even a 7 ft Christmas cracker! There will be medals for all finishers and prizes will be awarded for fastest male and female runner, fastest boy and girl, fastest team and best fancy dress. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 55
