WELCOME
...from the EDITORS Hello and welcome to the November 2017 edition. The year really is racing away! Apparently if Facebook advisors are right, we are going into the busiest time online with numbers on social media peaking around New Year’s Eve. I guess it’s not surprising as people are spending longer indoors. It is a wonderful way of keeping in touch over the festive period with distant family and friends. Here at the Elyi we are passionate about our city and local shops. It’s what makes the city centre lively and varied. It is very hard for small independent businesses to compete with the big online shopping giants, but we would encourage you to purposely make sure a portion of your Christmas shopping is done locally. Last year all my immediate family received Cherry Hill Chocolates and Ely Gin. I did it all in a day, shopping, wrapping, posting job done! Don’t get me wrong, I love Amazon too. I’ve just bought two nurse costumes (don’t ask!) but every little bit you can do here in Ely keeps our economy alive. Our top venues are hosting some great events this season with the famous KD Panto starting in December at the Maltings but of course we have the Fireworks on 11th November at Cherry Hill and the Big Switch On on 1st December on the Market. best wishes

RICHARD HOBBS MAYOR OF ELY
The last month has proved to be exciting and busy with numerous visits to our wonderful Cathedral. The first visit was a dinner in the Lady Chapel for the Ely Standard Business Awards. An enjoyable event, not only because of the spectacular setting but an insight in the diversity of the business life of Ely and the surrounding area. Congratulations to all those who organised the event and the nominees and winners of these awards. The next evening we were back in the Lady Chapel for a dinner to launch the Ely Potato Race. Congratulations to Austen and his team for a special evening and organising the Annual Potato Race, which has this year raised over ÂŁ4,000 for local charities. I had great joy in starting the races. The next morning we returned to the Cathedral to listen to a choir from our twin town of Ribe, Denmark. The City has been twinned with Ribe for over 60 years. We are delighted that the Ely Sing Choir has forged a strong bond of friendship. The Ely Ribe Association are always looking for any organisation within Ely that wish to forge a relationship with Ribe. We look forward to a concert in the Lady Chapel on Friday 3rd November at 1.10 pm by the Ribe Kammerkor and their joint concert with Ely Choral Society on Saturday 4th November. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Tickets
available through the Cathedral Box Office. In the evening we attended a concert given by Ely Sinfonia and an amazing guest, classical guitarist Craig Ogden. We are privileged to have such professional musicians associated with Ely. Sunday afternoon we returned to the Cathedral for the Justice Service for Her Majesty’s Judiciary. An annual event alternating between Ely and Peterborough Cathedrals. I have been in talks with the Royal British Legion in planning the commemoration of the end of WW1, which will be 100 years since the end of the Great War. More information at a later date. Together with my fellow councillor, Lis Every, I am extremely concerned about the impact of the upgrading of Ely North Junction. Whilst we see this as being of national importance, the impact on the residents of Queen Adelaide and Prickwillow is unacceptable, and we must work together to get the best possible outcome for our residents. Talking FreELY
Second pop up café in Ely - 4th November 2017 Local mental health project Talking FreELY is holding its second pop up café at the Ely Cathedral Conference centre between 9.30am and 1.00pm on 4th November. The café will feature an information zone, guest speakers, a mindfulness session, a light therapy room, hot drinks and cake. Trained volunteers will be available to talk informally with participants about mental health. The event is free to everyone.
stronger, more compassionate world. Another is Dr Steve Case-Upton from St Mary’s Surgery, who recently joined Talking FreELY as a charity trustee. The third speaker is Jess Manley, Project Leader for Blue Smile, a Cambridgeshire based children’s charity that provides counselling, therapy and mentoring for children in schools between the ages of 3 and 13.
Talking FreELY is for everyone encouraging people talk about their mental health. The group believes that the more people from all walks of life talk about mental health, the better. Whether you consider yourself to have mental health issues or want to learn more about wellbeing, you are welcome to the event. The second pop up café is following a successful event last July at the Cathedral Conference centre where guest speakers with different areas of expertise in mental health came together, along with Talking FreELY’s listening volunteers and a pop up café. Ninety-three per cent of the participants of the first pop up café said they enjoyed the event. One participant noted, “I felt welcome and not judged, there was sympathy and cake, what more could I want! Seriously, it was great to feel normal and OK”. Another person mentioned, “Excellent stigma-busting event. Very well done, thank you Tony and all the volunteers. Inspirational speakers.” This time there will be three guest speakers. One is writer Martin Baker, co-author of “High Tide, Low Tide: The Caring Friend’s Guide to Bipolar Disorder,” whose focus as a writer is to inspire connections between the ill and the well for a 32 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Also planned during the event is the presentation of an award to the winner of the poetry competition for poems that ‘Talk FreELY’ about mental health and incorporate the official NPD theme of ‘Freedom.’ The competition was announced on 28th September 2017 at the National Poetry Day (NPD). The winner will read their poem at the event. About Talking FreELY Talking FreELY has been set up to bring about change in attitudes toward mental health on a local level, here in East Cambridgeshire. The vision of the group is simple: A community that promotes mental wellness and empowers those suffering the effects of mental illness to step forward and seek the help they need. Talking FreELY has been inspired by the national campaign Time to Change, which was set up in 2007 and aims to end mental health discrimination. Led by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, the movement has already impacted on millions across the country. Keep up-to-date with Talking FreELY on Facebook, Twitter and the Website. ‘ARTS ALIVE’ LIBRARY PERFORMANCES Libraries in Soham and Littleport are preparing to host top quality performances as part of ‘The Library Presents…Arts Alive’ autumn season. Communities are at the heart of ‘The Library Presents… Arts Alive’ events. Volunteers from the local area will be transforming East Cambridgeshire libraries into theatres, music venues and art spaces and welcome everyone, whether they are newcomers or frequent visitors of arts events. The Libraries are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring events of this quality to the hearts of their communities. A volunteer from Littleport Library said : “I love coming to these events in the Libraries, it’s something different. I enjoy making the space look completely different for our visitors.” To curate their programme, Soham and Littleport Libraries held ‘Choosing Parties’ over the summer, which anyone from the area could attend to learn more about the artists featured in a diverse menu of events and vote for their favourites. The voting boxes remained in the libraries for a week, collecting more than 60 votes. The performances and workshops in the programme are the top scoring events chosen by voters in Soham and Littleport.
SOHAM LIBRARY Comedy 4 Kids Saturday 28 October – 3pm Daddy’s Diaries Friday 3 November – 7pm (1hr40) Tickets: £7 (adults), £4 (concs). Purchase in library or online at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/arts
LITTLEPORT LIBRARY Comedy 4 Kids Saturday 4 Nov – 3-4pm Tickets: £7 (adults), £4 (concs). Samba Drumming Workshops Sat 18 & 25 Nov 2.30–3.30 pm Tickets £3, free for concessions.
Both libraries selected Comedy 4 Kids, a hilarious stand up show for children (6+) and their families, making fun of everything from penguins to Nintendo Wii. Daddy’s Diaries won the most votes in Soham, an intensely moving and unique dramatization by Jane Bower of her father and grandfather’s experiences in World War I and II from their diaries and memoirs. Finally, in November, absolutely everyone – including those with no musical skill – is invited to learn some amazing samba rhythms in Littleport Library. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the libraries or online at: www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/arts Audiences who attended ‘The Library presents…Arts Alive’ events in 2016 said: “It was a terrific evening. Marvellous performance.” “So nice to come to something local and affordable. Simply brilliant!” “Hope there will be more future events like this. Extremely good value! Really enjoyed the performance.” Funded by Arts Council England, ‘The Library Presents… Arts Alive’ programme is a chance to explore theatre, comedy, music and more in the comfortable and friendly atmosphere of a library. Arts Alive first began in 2013. Since then it has expanded from only four libraries, to eight in 2015/16 and now to 10 across the county and two seasons per year. The programme will continue to grow over the next four years.
