EAST ANGLIAN AIR AMBULANCE CALLING ALL BRAVE SOULS AS THEY LAUNCH 2018 ONLY THE BRAVE EVENT The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has opened entries for their super-gruelling, super-muddy obstacle course challenge. The event at Elveden Estate is set to take place on Sunday 25 March 2018, and provides both a 6 and 10 mile course, with 20-35 obstacles, lots of mud, slides, straw bales and challenging hurdles. The charity will be offering an early-bird rate until the 31 October so get your entries in quick to secure your place. EAAA is a charity providing a life-saving helicopter emergency medical service for the people of East Anglia, and this event is an exhilarating way to get involved with raising funds. The Only The Brave (OTB) challenge is now in its third year, and this time the whole event will take place on a Sunday. As a nod to the incredible teamwork and bravery of the crews aboard their two helicopters, EAAA is this year encouraging teams to get involved and highlight the individual skills they each bring to make their team work. The EAAA Team launching this event is made up of The Inspiration, The Leader, The Motivator, The Brains & The Fit One, and consists of EAAA crew, an ex-patient, a fitness guru and last year’s OTB winner, Rich Anderson (EAAA pilot) is taking the reins as ‘The Leader’, ‘The Inspiration’ is provided by ex-patient Kerry Doyle, ‘The Brains’ of the operation come in the form of EAAA critical care paramedic Jemma Varela, 2017 OTB winner Daniel Heath of course becomes ‘The Fit One’ and ‘The Motivation’ comes from none other than Viking Fitness guru Chris Finn.
2 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Catrina Laskey, events Manager for EAAA said; “We wanted to come up with a different way to get people involved this year, and thought what better way than to encourage team work, as it is such an important part of our work at EAAA. We are delighted to have such a variety of inspiring people launching the event this year, and we want to encourage all participants to get involved with our Only The Brave 2018 Facebook page and tell us who is making up your teams. Let’s make this year all about motivational madness and appreciating all the members of our teams who will get us round this demanding course.” The early-bird rate running until the 31 October provides several options; £25 for 6 miles if £50 is raised, £35 for 10 miles if £50 raised, if no sponsorship is raised the rate is £40 for 6 miles or £50 for 10 miles. Every entry will receive an OTB official t-shirt, a medal, and a goody bag when they finish the course. The first 100 entrants will also receive a free OTB water bottle. There are also plenty of opportunities for sponsorship and other ways to get involved with the event. To find out more about how you can get involved please visit www.eaaa.org.uk/events/onlythebrave or email catrina.laskey@eaaa.org.uk. For more information on the work of East Anglian Air Ambulance, visit www.eaaa.org.uk or call 03450 669 999. ...from the EDITORS Hello, We are delighted to be bringing you the October magazine featuring lots of events and opportunities in the area. Do you have what it takes to complete the The East Anglian Air Ambulance Service’s fundraising challenge, opposite? I know I don’t - nice cuppa tea and an armchair for me please! But I am sure there are plenty of you who would smash it. Send us some pics if you do! Thank you to the Mayor and MP, Lucy Frazer for letting us know what they have got up to recently. We were very pleased to be amongst the Ely Hero supporters handing over a cheque for £500 to Ely Food Bank early in September. Events-wise there’s plenty to do throughout October including Ely Apple day and the Cathedral Harvest Festival. We also find ourselves featuring a number of November events ahead of time as for things like Viva’s Brassed Off and the wonderful Cathedral Gift and Food Fair the tickets are on sale now and will go very quickly. If you were a bit of a raver in your youth then you might be interested in the Big Fish Little Fish event on page 36. It looks great fun and will be a hit with families I am sure. Looking ahead even further, we hear from Terry Gauci a.k.a. Dame Mary Berry Bakewell in KD Theatre’s panto Beauty and the Beast and the library have been in touch to tell us about their FUN PALACES event. See page 42 Thanks to all the club secretaries and organisers that keep the groups and meets info coming in. We now have 120 of you using the magazine. Fabulous! best wishes
Bridget & Madeleine

RICHARD HOBBS MAYOR OF ELY
After a quiet few weeks the changing seasons from Summer to Autumn also means a change of civic duties for the Mayor. Outside events such as the presentation of awards for the best allotment change to inside events such as meetings about Christmas lights, and the time for annual dinners. I’m particularly looking forward to Needhams Old Boys dinner as an ex old boy. I will be holding my Civic Service on the 15th October which is combined with the Harvest Festival in the Cathedral. An important event in our calendar, this being an agricultural area. As in the past the Cathedral will be decorated with a colourful display of produce. This service is open to everyone and the Mayoress and I would be delighted to welcome as many of you as possible at the service which starts at 4pm. On the 22nd of October we have our annual litter pick around the town centre, it would be good to see as many people as possible help to tidy up our City. We shall be meeting at 10 am at the Sessions House. If you cannot make this maybe you would like to ensure the area around where you live is looking neat and tidy. As you will recall at the beginning of my year I was hoping to work towards a dementia friendly city. Whilst we still have a long way to go the response has been overwhelming. We now have all major banks and supermarkets signed up. I am now looking for community groups and local organisations to help me take this further. 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
I am more than happy to come along to your meetings and discuss the next step. Regards Richard Hobbs

NOT JUST FOR OLD MEN The Ely Hereward Rotary Club - Ely’s evening Rotary Club – is keen to recruit new members to help it continue to raise more funds for local charities and good causes. Every year the club raises thousands of pounds and supports other organisations and events in Ely. It is 50/50 male and female, with ages ranging from the early forties to the mid-seventies – plus one of 89! Age is not an important feature and the club considers all ages for membership. The club are very relaxed and informal, with “smart casual” the norm, and meets every Wednesday evening to plan fundraising, community support, and social activities. Formal meals are no longer a regular feature of meetings, but generally members go out to eat every month with family and friends.

ELY HERO AWARDS DONATE £500 TO ELY FOOD BANK As you know, earlier in the year the Elyi Magazine joined other local businesses in Ely to sponsor the city’s very first Hero Awards. This was organised by MetroRod Cambridge in association with the Ely Standard. The awards were a resounding success with a huge number of nominations received for the 10 different categories. The judges had the very difficult task of choosing the finalists who were then invited to attend a glitzy ceremony at The Maltings on a scorchingly hot evening in June. Here the winners of each category were announced and presented with their awards. The evening was charged with emotion as Mayor Richard Hobbs read out the uplifting and inspiring stories of local people and the amazing things they have achieved. Tears, laughter and standing ovations were the order of the evening! Ely Heroes is the brain-child of MetroRod’s Naomi Sherwood; It was her idea to set up the awards to celebrate the most deserving and inspirational people in Ely and the surrounding villages. Her passion and dedication inspired local businesses to donate to cover the cost of the event. All the judges gave freely of their time during the long and considered process of picking finalists and winners. The event draws sponsorship from local individuals and businesses with any surplus going to a local charity. Therefore, Ely Hero Awards are thrilled to announce, after finalising the accounts, that a £500 donation has been made to Ely Foodbank – a very worthy cause! The presentation took place on Monday 4th September at The Poets House with Cllr Ian Lindsay handing over the cheque to the foodbank on behalf of the Ely Hero Awards. The category sponsors included Grovemere Property, Ward Gethin Archer, Thor Labs, Life Fitness, Elyi Magazine, CHS Group, Red Shoes
Accounting and Puggles and Seashorse Swin Schools, media partner Ely Standard Newspaper and organisers Metro Rod Cambridge. Luke Smith of local design company, Infiniti Graphics designed the logo, website and all the promotional literature. Sadie Finch, a local Virtual Assistant collated all the nominations. The Poets House kindly hosted many of the judges’ meetings for the event. Naomi said “We’d like to thank all the tremendous businesseses for their support and assistance, without which we wouldn’t have been able to pull together such a successful event, and to all the amazingly special people who help make Ely so great.” Cathy Wright, Project Director for the Ely Foodbank says “We give out parcels for 3 days' worth of food and have fed over 8000 people in the last 5 years across our centres. This generous award will certainly contribute to sustaining our work and we are thrilled to have been chosen by Ely Hero Awards to receive this, thank you so much!” For further information on Ely Heroes and how you can get involved in the 2018 Awards please contact MetroRod (Cambridge) Business Development Manager Naomi Sherwood on 01353 659047 or email naomi@metrorodcambridge.co.uk

TIPS ON PROMOTING YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS We often get asked, “How do I write an advertorial”? Its purpose is to provide your customers with details about what you provide in your business and introduce yourself to your new customers. It normally sits next to your advert, hence the name! It is useful for your new customers to build a connection with you before they pick up the telephone and call you for the first time. Many people find it difficult to ‘sell themselves’. Think about that interview situation when you are asked, “tell me about the things you are good at” or “how do you use your skills in the workplace”? They are always the difficult questions. When you write your advertorial, it's a good idea to write it from the perspective of a new customer who knows nothing about you or your business, you could include things like: • • • • • • • •
• •
Who is your target customer, adults, children, both? What services do you offer? What do you sell / provide? When are you open? How will your customer's benefit from what you provide? Do you offer an introductory appointment? Write a bit about you and your interests (cso your customers can get to know you) Don't be afraid to blow your own trumpet, if you believe in yourself, others will believe in you too How long you have been working in this particular field? What is it about you that makes you unique
Our objective is to give local businesses the opportunity to promote themselves to our readers. Of course, the best thing that promotes your business is that you have a good service or product that happy customers will recommend. If you can’t hand on heart enthuse about what you do, you can’t expect others to get enthusiastic either. From your Advertising Manager Elyi Magazine 18 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A LOG BURNER MAKES TO THE HEART(H) OF A HOME We had our log burner installed on Valentine’s Day this year, by CADE Wood Burning Stoves; we chose the Contura 556G for its contemporary looks and ability to turn. We love it and the cosy effect it creates in the home. Immediately we found that our heating bill was reduced as we were able to turn the heating off downstairs and the bedroom radiators upstairs. I am actually looking forward to the winter coming, that’s definitely a first! Nigel Cade installed our burner, he was efficient, clean and very reasonably priced. He offers a wide range of stoves and was extremely helpful when surveying the house to see if we could actually achieve an installation in our type of house. We were surprised we could have one installed as it was built in an era when open fires and chimneys were not in fashion or placed in new builds. Things have changed and people are seeing the value in not being reliant on the energy companies for their fuel and embracing the savings that can be made. Also, a stove will add value to your home and make it more sellable,
or if you did want to move, an alternative would be to take it with you. Logs can be sourced locally, there are a few suppliers but we find Truelink Ltd. 01353 649440 in Stretham the best for us. They delivered to our drive and supply a mixture of soft and hard wood; they are reasonably priced, well seasoned and ready to burn. We sourced our log store from Littleport Timber Buildings 01353 861707, Jack did a fine job building it to our specification. We are looking forward to a cosy, energy efficient winter and a glass of red round the fire. A word of warning though, it does create a bit of a ‘log’ obsession, you will know what I mean when you get yours installed!

Ely’s Apple Festival Saturday 21 October 2017
National Apple Day, traditionally held on or around 21st October, was launched in 1990 by Common Ground. Ely has been joining in with the celebrations since 2000 and he event has now become one of the best loved apple festivals in the area. The festival provides interest and intrigue whether you are interested in the educational, environmental or simply fun angle of the day. Our experts from East of England Apples and Orchard Project will once again be in attendance to identify any apples that you wish to bring along. It is easier to identify if you can bring part of the stalk and/or leaf as well as the actual apple. So if you have been mystified as to what kind of apples have been growing in your garden all these years, now is the time to find out. There will be several competitions, candle making demonstrations, birds of prey, storytelling and activities running throughout the day including the ever-popular longest apple peeling competition, apple and spoon races and apply shy. Yes we pun a lot on apples! Watergull Orchards, who kindly supply all our apples and bottles of juice for the various competitions, will be on hand to talk you through over 25 varieties of apples as well as over 10 varieties of juice and cider. Ely’s very own Green Man will be making an appearance throughout the day as we celebrate local traditions along with Morris dancing and a Mummer’s play. As you might expect, all our food vendors have an apple twist so from apple teas to pork and apple sausages you can expect a wide variety of apple related culinary delights. We are very grateful to our sponsor, Orchards Green, a new development to the north of Ely. We hope to see you there.

VIVA AND SOHAM COMRADES BAND UNITE IN A PASSIONATE PORTRAYAL OF MINERS’ STRUGGLE 1996 saw the cinema release of the classic British movie “Brassed Off”, telling the story of the members of the Grimley Colliery brass band and their families as their pit faces closure. Their community is set to be devastated, their livelihoods lost, and their band disbanded, yet their humour and their passion for music lives on. In November, Viva are pleased to bring the theatrical version of the film to life at the Performing Arts Centre in Soham. Featuring a fabulous cast, and with music from the award winning Soham Comrades Band, this is a show not to be missed.
with Soham Comrades Band is such an uplifting experience. The thrill of standing in front of them while they make brilliant music is incredibly exciting. This show will be awesome.” If you like great drama, great comedy and great brass band music, this is the show for you. Tickets are available from the Viva office on 01353 722228 , 7 Churchgate Street, Soham, or via www.wegottickets,com , priced just £12.
The cast has already had a message of support from movie actor Stephen Tompkinson. Stephen added that Brassed Off “continues to change my life and will always mean so much to so many”. It would be fair that the viva cast would wholeheartedly agree with Stephen Tompkinson. Veteran local actor David Tickner said “Playing Danny in Brassed Off was always going to be a huge challenge and privilege, but rehearsing

SCULPTURE BY LOCAL ARTIST HONOURS SCHOOL AND PAST HEADTEACHER. After retiring from St Mary’s Junior School in 2015 as a result of ill health, long-serving headmaster, Rev. James Hickish decided he would like to give something to the school as a parting gift. He asked close friends Sarah Hogben and Peter Birchall if they could help. After a year of work and experimentation Peter and Sarah met with the staff of St Mary’s to show James the finished article. “Peter has created something truly beautiful” said James “ and I am so pleased that the children will see it every day on their way to assembly” The artist explained to the assembled staff that the sculpture is made from recycled Corian and bog oak, two very different but chemically linked materials. The oak is probably 2000-3000 years old and therefore would have been a tree in biblical times and the Corian is a material that would have ended up in landfill but is made from the material that bog oak becomes. The Rainbow colours of the piece dissolve into a beautifully crafted white cross detailed with silver lines and flecks, symbolising the idea of walking in the light. In time honoured tradition the afternoon ended with cake in the staff room. Thank you St Mary’s!

Ely’s Premier Pantomime Dame, Terry Gauci, returns to The Maltings for his 3rd year donning the frocks and charming the audience with a different accent (something he has become known for each year!) We’ve grabbed a few moments of Terry’s time to ask him some questions about the pantomime dame role and his experiences!! This is your 3rd year playing the Pantomime Dame in Ely! Is it good to be back?’! It’s always good to return to the Maltings. The venue is very intimate, which makes for a great atmosphere. KD Theatre put the offer on the table nice and early and despite interest from other production companies, it’s hard to walk away from a place and people that I love.! What do you love the most about playing the dame? I like reading their names and giving them a voice & developing their character. It’d be too easy to play a Dame with my own voice, year on year and personally I think the audience would tire of me quickly. So by injecting a new accent with a catchphrase, it allows me to present a different Dame each year. Also, the fact I can get away with the cheekiest innuendo with a nudge nudge wink wink to the adults!! Can we expect more fabulous costumes this year? I don’t have my own wardrobe like some professional dames. I leave that to my producer/ director, Daniel Bell, to pick for me. He has a vision and always makes me look a million dollars which is difficult with a face like mine!! How did you get involved with KD Theatre Productions? In 2013, I was on a comedy tour in Wales, looked up professional pantomime producers and found that I had one local to me. They were in their first year and I auditioned for King Crumble. 5 years on, they are growing and I can’t see me working for any other company at Easter & Christmas, as they are an absolute dream to work for.! What can Audiences expect from you and the pantomime this year? Dame Mary Berry Bakewell is a lovable, cuddly, nanny type figure who innocently says things that sound rude! She’s a fantastic cook & a Fenland girl (accent clue)! 38 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
The cast is very strong - always a pleasure to work with Gregory Hazel. In my opinion, one of the best Panto villains on the circuit. The beautiful Lucy Bell is the perfect ‘Beauty’. I have a new comedy partner, Robin Hatcher, who I feel will connect instantly with the Ely audience. The set is going to blow you away! Brace yourself Ely, it’s going to be amazing!! Terry Gauci plays ‘Dame Mary Berry Bakewell’ in this year’s pantomime BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at The Maltings in Ely from the 22nd December 2017 - 14th January 2018. Tickets are selling fast! www.kdtheatre.co.uk / 01353 725 026

ELY CHORAL SOCIETY & RIBE KAMMERKOR JOIN FORCES FO Ely Cathedral Octagon - Saturday 4th November 2017 at 7.30pm Ely Choral Society and Ribe Kammerkor will join togetherin a concert this November that celebrates the shared musical heritage of the twinned cities of Ely and Ribe in Denmark. The programme includes music from both countries, and the choirs, under the direction of Lotte Bille Glæsel and Andrew Parnell, will sing separately as well as together. Benjamin Britten’s cantata, Rejoice in the Lamb, is a setting of parts of Christopher Smart’s long poem of the same name. Smart was an 18th century
poet, deeply religious, but of a strange and rather unbalanced mind. The poem was written while Smart was in an asylum, but contains many flashes of genius. Britten chose a few of the finest passages to set to music. The work was commissioned in 1943 by Rev. Walter Hussey for the 50th anniversary of the consecration of St Matthew’s Church in Northampton. Mendelssohn’s Hear my Prayer needs very little introduction. It is an extended anthem for soprano solo and choir and contains the popular O for the wings of a dove made famous by the 1927 recording performed by the treble Ernest Lough and the choir of the Temple Church, with Sir George Thalban-Ball at the organ. Schubert had a close interest in Mozart’s Masses and in this 1816 Mass in C, one can hear obvious influence of the earlier composer, as well as Schubert’s trademark tunefulness and invention. The above works are complemented by smaller pieces by Niels Gade and John Rutter, and organ solos played by Lotte Bille Glæsel and John Wyatt.

There has been a recent surge in applications for neighbourhood watch schemes to be established in the area. It has been recognised that police numbers have reduced and burglaries have increased. One way of improving the situation is to have neighbourhood watch established in your street. Recent figures show that generally there is a 1 in 45 chance of being burgled, but this is reduced to 1 in 344 with an effective neighbourhood watch scheme. It has also been shown that there is a 21% reduction in crime when such a scheme is in operation.
