Hello Ely! Well, what a fabulous summer it has been! Mayor Mike has been as busy as ever representing the city with his daughter Lauren stepping into the shoes of the Mayoress for this term. Our local city venues, as well as village locations, give us a full Autumn seasonal programme of events to look forward to. See our listings for a selection. As promised, we have gone just a tad GREEN and our editorial focus this issue is on some of the Eco initiatives in the area. We couldn’t possibly cover everything, but hopefully there is something there to interest you. Please be assured that the intention is not to beat you over the head with a big green stick (biodegradeable of course) but just to attempt to join the national Eco conversation at a local level.
I would also like to add a Facebook health warning; sometimes it can feel that for every good attempt you make to live more sustainably and waste less there are 10 people ready to tell you you are doing it wrong!! So the decision of how you live is yours. Find out as much as you can and then make good choices but above all stay positive. This is why we love our keynote article from Prof Andrew Balmford (page 40) His advice and outlook is wonderfully positive and encouraging. We also feature some lovely local services in our pink business section on page 62. Thank you too to all our other advertisers who support the magazine. Please support them in return and tell them you saw them here. Without them, it wouldn’t happen!
Bridget

Ely Museum
Redevelopment update from Emily Allen, Community Engagement Officer
B
y the time you read this edition of the Elyi, Ely Museum will have closed its doors as our exciting redevelopment works begin in earnest! In January 2019, we were delighted to announce that we have been awarded a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £1.66 million for the Unlocking the Potential of the Old Gaol: Ely Museum Redevelopment Project. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, this £2.2 million project will rejuvenate Ely Museum and make it a fantastic destination for local people and visitors to the area.
our collections store, and in the early part of September, once our doors are closed, will do the same in the galleries too. With over 8000 objects ranging from a Roman coffin weighing in at over a tonne to tiny fossils from the warm Jurassic seas that once covered the Isle of Ely, each object has been carefully and safely packed in readiness for its temporary move away from the Old Gaol.
We hope to reopen to the public in the late autumn of 2020, but in the meantime, we’ll be coming out to see you! From taking our school sessions on the road, to visiting village festivals and fetes across East Cambridgeshire, as well as events within Ely too, we’re excited to bring the history of our region to life!
Please continue to check our website or social media pages to see our updates from the building site and where our next event will be! Visit our website: www.elymuseum.org.uk Find us on social media: @ElyMuseum
You’ll soon see changes to the façade of Ely Museum as our new education room is built. This space will be a brilliant, 21st century space for us to welcome children to. The biggest changes will be within the historic Old Gaol though, where new and interactive galleries will be created, and the historic features of our 13th century gaol will be revealed. Staff and a brilliant team of volunteers have spent August safely packing up objects in 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

promote our Ely independent shops, just as the Elyi did in a great feature in the last issue. If we really appreciate our independents and want them to stay, then we must give them our custom and encourage tourists and visitors to come to Ely and spend money with them.
Well we’re off and running again and certainly keeping busy. Anyone who tells you that there is nothing happening in Ely is not trying to get involved. Terrific Ely Heroes this year, thank you Naomi and everyone. Great family events with Aquafest and the Folk Festival, and some wonderful concerts and events with the Isle of Ely Festival. All these things are possible because relatively small groups of committed people make them happen. While thanking them all on behalf of the city, I know they would all welcome more volunteers to help them.
By the time you read this article the City’s tourism manager, Mrs Tracey Harding, will have left Ely for an exciting new post. We wish her well and thank her for instigating and masterminding Eel Day, the Food and Drink Festival, Applefest and making Oliver Cromwell House such a lively attraction. The work will continue in promoting Ely and our shops, restaurants and events.

TUMBLE TOTS CELEBRATES THE BIG 40! This year Tumble Tots celebrates its 40th anniversary since first opening the doors in 1979, proving that this children’s pre-school activity continues to stand the test of time and that physical play will always be an essential part of a child’s ongoing development. Not familiar with Tumble Tots? Where have you been? The Tumble Tots programme consists of five age-related classes tailored to suit the various stages of a child’s development, with activities and apparatus to reflect this. The wooden and foam equipment used in the classes has been specially designed to not only be bright, colourful and fun, but to challenge and develop children’s physical abilities. I have been running classes in the Ely area for the past 6 years and have loved every moment, I have a fantastic team of fully trained ladies that teach more than just agility and climbing, but also ‘skills for life’. Tumble Tots has seen many changes over the years but has always had children’s health, happiness and wellbeing at the heart of its aims and objectives. MUM, DAUGHTER AND GRANDMOTHER ENJOY CREAM TEA COURTESY OF DREAM DOORS Three generations of the same family recently enjoyed a cream tea together as a thank you from Dream Doors in Ely. Rebecca Spackman, her mum Gail Spackman, and Gail’s mother Sylvia Arthur all bought kitchen transformations from Dream Doors over the last few months. As a thank you from the kitchen showroom in Market Place, Ely, the family enjoyed a delicious cream tea together at Poets House Hotel and Restaurant in Ely. Gail said: “it was a lovely afternoon out and it was really quite nice to have just the three of us together to catch up. We probably hadn’t been together , just the three of us, since Rebecca was a baby – mum particularly enjoyed it.” Gail added: “My daughter had her kitchen done first and then me and mum had ours done very soon after. I think myself and mum were both going to have our whole kitchens redone but we couldn’t face the stress and upheaval. Then we saw how nice Rebecca’s 12 12 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
was with just a refacing of the doors and new worktops so we went for that instead. Our Dementia Choir in Ely, still singing together after more than a year, joined by new singing stars!
Registered Charity All In Sound, is delighted that their dementia choir in Ely is still singing strong after more than a year and is proving more popular than ever. Thanks to a grant from The National Lottery Community Fund, as well as more local funding from Hopkins Homes, through Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, City of Ely Council, and Ely Community Events, the group that meets each week is on a roll! People who are living with dementia, memory loss and their carers come together to sing songs, learning new ones as well as old favourites, in a friendly and inclusive environment, and more recently have been delighted to welcome some fantastic young people from our very own Ely College. Kathryn Rowland, Director of All In Sound, and Group Leader says “When we started this group, we had no idea on the impact it could have, and now each week we can see how important the group has become to each and every person. It is an absolute delight to work alongside Ely College Head of Music, Tim Vinall, to share songs and ideas, that we can all do together, and the feedback so far has been amazing. A choir makes a real community, and I think this illustrates what a positive community Our Dementia Choir here in Ely is.” Tim Vinall from Ely College commented on the positive attitude of the Year 7 and 8 attendees: 38 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
“Our students have been very positive and the commitment they have made to supporting those affected by Alzheimer’s has been outstanding. Our PLEDGES programme, followed by all our students here at Ely College, encourages service and engagement with the wider community. The students who have been involved are already showing how to be great community leaders and good citizens. As a college we are so proud of them all!” For any more information about All In Sound, and Sing! Together, or if you would like to join then please contact Kathryn Rowland on 01353 662022 or email kathryn@allinsound.co.uk You can also support Sing! Stay Positive and believe that moving towards a more sustainable future is possible! Faced with ever more serious news about our changing climate and the extinction of species it’s easy to think there’s nothing that we as individuals can do. So we asked Cambridge University’s Professor of Conservation Science and Ely resident, Andrew Balmford for his expert tips on making a difference. “It’s true that we won’t save the planet just by changing a few lightbulbs and putting out the recycling (even though these are worthwhile). We need to do a lot more. But together we can have major impacts, provided we focus on the biggest actions. I think there are 5 ways almost all of us can make a real difference.” Lowering how much beef, lamb and dairy we eat – because cows and sheep belch and fart a lot of methane (a much more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide), red meat and dairy have 20 to 50 times the greenhouse gas footprint of pulses. We don’t all need to become strict vegetarians, but for most of us eating less animal-based protein would be good for our own health as well as that of the climate.
Andrew Balmford

Seriously reducing energy use at home – by fitting proper insulation and double-glazing, delaying putting on the heating and putting on a jumper instead, turning down the thermostat, and maybe even installing solar panels. Switching energy provider to one that doesn’t buy from gas- or coal-fired powered stations can also ensure whatever power we do use has a very low footprint.
2
Cutting the impact of our travel – by walking, cycling or taking public transport instead of the car; cutting down on flights; and really importantly, offsetting the emissions of what we still do. There are many reputable offsetting schemes – the one I support (which you can find at: http://www.standfortrees.org/manvsearth) saves trees in Gola Forest, West Africa - soaking up carbon, building rural livelihoods and safeguarding amazing wildlife, all at the same time.

Getting out into nature – just spending an hour or two each week in green spaces can be fantastically restorative, and remind us why living more sustainably is so important. The oases of nature around the edge of Ely – Roswell Pits, Ely Common and the river meadows - are a great place to start. And if you’re visiting these places already, maybe next time take a friend or a neighbour – perhaps someone who couldn’t otherwise enjoy the benefits of the wild spaces on our doorstep.
4
Letting the powerful know– although we can each of us play our part, our impacts will depend on how far they’re backed up by what politicians and businesses are doing. So if the natural world matters to us, we need to use our votes and our purchasing power to make sure corporations, MPs and councillors know what we think.
5
There’s one other thing, which is perhaps the most important of all. And that is to remain hopeful, and positive, and to believe that moving towards a more sustainable future is possible. My list is of course only a start - there are lots of other important steps we can take – but together I hope these actions show that making a difference really is possible.
The Prospects Trust is UNWRAPPING a different way to shop in Ely from September. Weigh, Tare, Fill – three simple words which Prospects Trust Unwrapped’s team hope become a mantra for their new shoppers when they officially open their really GREENgrocery on the 4th September. The small shop front of Lighthouse Ely’s main building on Lynn Road is aiming to become Ely’s first inconvenience store! A corner shop full of seasonal produce, locally made gifts and eco-alternatives to help Ely people stock up on single use plastic free staples & organic edibles. One wall of the shop has been transformed into a “refill wall” a local larder which will dispense just what you need not a BOGOF deal into your own tubs, bags & well even your hat! If you can weigh it you can fill it, however the team are keen to keep it all clean so will also sell new reusable containers to help you adapt to a refill retail lifestyle. Shop Manager Tom Cockerton has been hands on in the design, layout and build of the shop, storeroom and kitchen refit so has met lots of local passing residents telling him what to stock and he can’t wait to open. Tom has been working throughout the summer months WE ARE FUNDRAISING FOR STOCK: localgiving. org/charity/prospectstrustatsnakehallfarm/project/ unwrapthesstock
transforming pre-loved kit into a brand-new shop. Reuse and repurpose, with a lot of Tom’s crafty expertise, has been at the heart of the venture, with donated furniture from solidarity partner Emmaus Cambridge, paint donated from The Newmarket Paint Company and Re-Imagine and lots of amazing volunteers, the shop is looking ripe for the produce. The shop will also host a “Pod” wall full of local handicrafts and eco products ensuring that when people sit and linger longer over their Hot Numbers cup of coffee, their Samovar blended loose leaf tea or a plate of seasonally inspired edibles they have lots of different gift ideas to peruse. For local talent wishing to retail their goods contact Tom on 01353 602010. The organic and local produce is coming direct from the farm, The Prospects Trust’s Snakehall Farm near Reach. All the produce is sown, grown, harvested and graded by co-workers with additional needs and as a social enterprise, all profits are ploughed back into the running of the farm. The Ely shop will become a training ground for new Co-workers, helping young people currently marginalised from mainstream employment gain accredited training in retail and food hygiene while gaining practical supported work experience in the shop and farm food servery. Supported placements are still available for more Co-workers with details available at: www.prospectstrust.org.uk/unwrapped or pop in to chat with the shop team at: Unwrapped 13 Lynn Road, Ely CB7 4EG www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 41

t Re-Imagine we are always finding creative ways to help look after our planet by collecting materials that businesses normally just throw away and was started in 2013 for two reasons. First, to help save and use the materials we already have on our planet, and second, to help people who would like to use art, craft and play materials but can’t afford them. The centre is a hub of creative energy and is a lot of folks happy place, an environment where children can touch things and adults can share and learn. We are uniquely linked to the community to really help make a difference by providing education about a sustainable lifestyle because we want a society where everyone enjoys a good life without further
We realise that waste material is a valuable resource and re-use wins over recycling because it does not involve any reprocessing and industrial processing which produces pollution. There is actually a double saving for the environment when you use our materials because you not only save them from filling up a landfill site, but also they replace new, usually over packaged materials which you would have consumed otherwise. As well as the implications of working conditions of overseas factory workers of cheap craft supplies including young children. Every purchase you make is a moral choice. Read that again.
The Community Factory, the first of its kind in all the land, is where folks can help by donating items - we are constantly collecting toiletries, backpacks, sleeping bags, choclate, toothbrushes and toothpaste, scarf & gloves, teabags, coffee and sugar for local Homelessness organisations.

When people ask “Ruth, what do you do?, I say whatever it takes. As the Director of Re-imagine I love all things creative and anyone who knows me knows I was born to make things but even more I want to play a part in addressing the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. In order to leave no one behind, it is important that we think beyond our own fields of activity. We live in an interconnected world and through collaborative action art can be used to showcase the element of creative reuse and ethical living. Someone clever once said there are no passengers on Planet Earth we are all crew, well folks, have your boarding cards ready and stow your tray tables because the time is here and Mother Earth needs you. Shop ethically, use responsibly, act locally, think globally and walk gently on this Earth. Please. Our eco-credentials are fierce and our strategy remains the same, to actively seek out ways to reduce the waste in our community and educate folks onward to a beautiful, rewarding re-use journey. Ruth Marley Re-imagine Witchford Recycling Centre, Ely
The Community Larder Project collects surplus short dated food from local Supermarkets and makes it available to anyone who is struggling to meet the meal demands of their families, to those who work with vulnerable folks in our local community but also those who are passionate about food waste.

TERRACYCLE
Eco Ely is a community group aimed at likeminded residents of Ely and surrounding villages, who are interested in environmental issues, sustainability, recycling and making a difference where we live. Find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Hayley Ellis, set up the organization after attending an event about Eco Churches at Ely Cathedral. Ely Cathedral has already set up an Environmental Group and Hayley states, “Within our local community we have schools going for Eco School Status, and churches going for Eco Church status, which is great, and I wanted to set up something similar to support and encourage local residents; to help and encourage changes at an individual, household and business level. We started with waste. Recycling can be a mine field, so I have been lucky to work with Darren Hughes at East Cambridgeshire District Council who has helped us to understand the process a lot more. We are lucky that we have one of the best recycling rates in East Cambridgeshire and an enthusiastic council who are keen to keep seeing this improving. We like people to use Eco Ely as a forum for asking questions, about waste or recycling or anything, and we do our best to find the answers. Members have already said that by being part of the group they have increased their recycling, reduced their black bag landfill waste and looked at alternative for single use plastic items.

Sustainable travel means finding a way that tourism can be maintained long-term without harming our natural and cultural environments. Sustainable travel should minimise the negative impacts of tourism and ideally be beneficial to the area in which it takes place.
Responsible Travel
W
e spoke with local independent tour operators David Archer and Hafsa Gaher about their views on sustainable travel.
David says ”Travel has the potential to connect the world like nothing else. Engaging in immersive travel brings cultures together and we have so much to learn from each other. So, while clocking up the air miles increases your carbon footprint, we need to strike a balance between cutting back and being cut off from the world.” Hafsa and David specialise in luxury adventure holidays off the beaten track. They have first hand knowledge of how toursim can affect the destination area both negatively and positively. Hafsa adds “People are constantly causing damage to the environment while multi-national chain hotels aren’t always the most eco-friendly – you need to know what you’re looking for. So how can we make the most of it when we do travel? How can we offset the damage we cause with positive sustainable tourism? It’s important to be mindful of your impact, not just on the physical environment but also on the culture and history of a place and on those living there now”. There is crossover in definition between sustainable travel, responsible travel, eco tourism and green travel. These terms encompass the idea 46 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
of being more conscious of how we travel. As tour specialists David and Hafsa are perfectly placed to take your holiday off the beaten track and alleviate the over-tourism of densely populated destinations around the world which are at risk of being damaged by tourist footfall. David says “Sustainable travel is all about connecting with others and that connectivity starts at home. We love our Ely community and are always looking to engage with local residents and businesses and would welcome you getting in touch to discuss sustainability.” With this in mind Archer and Gaher Adventures are hosting an event showcasing Sustainable Travel at the Poets House in September. Running throughout the afternoon, they are inviting destination experts to give advice about how to travel sustainably as well as highlighting some of the innovative initiatives making a positive impact out there in the world. You are invited to join Archer & Gaher for welcome drinks and snacks at The Poets House on Sunday 15th September. There will be lots of information and even prizes to be won! Find out more about your next adventure! (see page 9 for more info)

A Green Cathedral Ely Cathedral is a beacon of green light in the city as it works towards becoming an ‘EcoCathedral’. The community have been busy auditing everything they do and the impact on the environment. The Cathedral Environment Group ‘Renew’ has been meeting for just over a year and started with the simple act of litter picking around Ely on a Saturday morning. They are now looking at recycling, energy efficiency and environmental impact across all activities including worship, day to day operations and in the restaurants and shops. To celebrate this the team are preparing for the first Environment Festival at the Cathedral from 15 May - 15 June 2020. The Festival ‘Heaven and Earth’, will welcome as the centrepiece, Gaia, a 7m diameter art installation of the planet earth which will hang from the Nave ceiling. The Cathedral is also surrounded by green space, Cross Green, Cherry Hill and the Dean’s Meadow, and new trails and walks will be created as part of the Festival programme as well as educational activities, lectures and events for all the family. Canon Vicky Johnson said “It is really important that we, as a cathedral, think about our environment and recognise the contribution we can all make to protecting the earth for future generations. This really is the issue of our time and we are keen that these questions are seen as central to what it means to be a Christian person.” Special events in the Autumn including a Prayer Vigil for the Earth, a special service of Candle-lit

ELY WILDSPACE Country Park land for sale Residents of Ely and the district will be familiar with Ely Country Park at Roswell Pits, described on ECDC’s website as ‘a fantastic place to enjoy and explore the great outdoors’. An important part of the park is however owned by the Environment Agency, which is planning to sell some of their land, including the pit off Kiln Lane (pictured). This presents a unique opportunity for ECDC to bring this land under its control, thus ensuring free access in the future as part of the Country Park. An alternative scenario is that the land may be bought by individuals or organisations
that deny access to the public, or use it for purposes that are inappropriate and unsympathetic for a country park. If you are concerned, you may like to contact your own District Councillor. For more information on this issue please visit our website www.elywildspace.org.uk. Ely Common is abuzz! There are over 260 species of wild bee in the UK, most of which are “solitary” (non-social) bees that include leafcutters, masons, plasterers, miners and “cuckoos”. Surveys over the past three years have recorded 45 species on Ely Common. Earlier this year, two bee hotels were installed on Ely Common, designed by Ely Wildspace and made by Year 10 students of Ely College. The hope is that these bee hotels will raise awareness of the rich variety and lifestyles of our native wild bees, most of which are in serious decline due to habitat loss and unfriendly intensive agricultural farming practices. Over one hundred nests have been made so far in the two bee hotels by five species of solitary bee, including Willughby’s leafcutter (pictured). If you want to get involved in Ely Wildspace activities or find out more about upcoming Wildspace events visit www.elywildspace.org.uk.

NATURAL CAMBRIDGESHIRE PLANS TO DOUBLE NATURE ACROSS THE FENS AND CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Natural Cambridgeshire, the local nature partnership, recently announced plans to double the area of rich wildlife habitats across Cambridgeshire with the aim of creating a worldclass environment where nature and people thrive, and businesses prosper. The ambition was launched at Waterbeach Barracks on 29th July by James Palmer, Mayor of the Combined Authority. Cambridgeshire currently has one of the smallest areas of land managed for nature of any county in the country, relative to size. Natural Cambridgeshire wants to double that figure, from 8% to 16% by delivering existing habitat restoration schemes such as Wicken Fen and through the opportunities provided by the economic growth agenda. In addition, Natural Cambridgeshire wants to work with farmers to expand existing schemes such as the Ely nature friendly farming zone that manage large areas of land for nature within profitable businesses. Mayor James Palmer commented “I welcome Natural Cambridgeshire’s ambition to double the amount of land that is actively managed for
nature. An ambitious vision for a high-quality natural environment is essential for contributing to the standard of life that will attract and retain the skilled workers required for growth over the next 30 years.” Nigel Hugill, Chief Executive of Urban&Civic, the developers of the former barracks at Waterbeach, said, "Large scale projects can and must lead the way in balancing housing need with meaningful biodiversity gain. Urban&Civic has long espoused a trees first approach and is delighted to be engaged in this important initiative." Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, Anna Bailey said, “I thoroughly welcome Natural Cambridgeshire in presenting a clear and ambitious vision for nature. In East Cambridgeshire, we are blessed with some wonderful natural habitats, such as Wicken Fen, one of Europe's most important wetlands. But, locally and nationally, land for nature has declined over the decades: this vision sets the framework to reverse that decline across Cambridgeshire.”

The group has a programme of walks and talks during the year. The next walk is “Creatures of the Night” on Friday 13th September, looking for bats and moths in Ely Country Park. The group also carries out management work on meadows near Chettisham for the Wildlife Trust. One of the meadows, Chettisham Meadow, is a 'ridgeand-furrow' meadow with a spectacular show of orchids. During spring the meadows is full of cowslips and green-winged orchids. Other plants include ox-eye daisy, adder’s-tongue fern and pepper-saxifrage. The meadow is cut for hay and grazed by sheep. Seed from Chettisham is sown on other sites including Ely Common as part of the Coronation Meadows scheme. Adele Pemberton Psychotherapist Tel: 07931 096 198
Adele Pemberton is an experienced psychotherapist working in the Ely area. Adele qualified as a Psychosynthesis counsellor in 2001 and worked in private practise in London. Since moving to Ely she has extended her skills and knowledge by completing advanced training in Neuro Linguistic Programming and in Emotional Freedom Technique. Adele’s training encompasses a variety of tools which gives her flexibility in her approach. This allows her to adapt to the client’s individual needs. Tools such as solution focused and cognitive behavioural approaches alongside guided imagery, hypnosis and EFT allow clients to shift and change things that are not useful to them. Clients learn relaxation techniques and how to let go of unhelpful thoughts and feelings with an overall focus on life’s vision rather than life’s obstacles. EFT or “tapping” is based on the Chinese practise of acupuncture but instead of using needles pressure is applied by the finger tips, hence “Tapping”. EFT

LIFELAB IS COMING! Photos: LifeLab
Friday 27th and Saturday 28th September are your chance to make your own breakthroughs, when LifeLab will transform shopping centres, cafes, bars and public spaces around Ely, Cambridge and Peterborough into discovery zones for all ages. For these two days, the people making these discoveries (researchers from the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute, the Babraham Institute, the University of Cambridge, and the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology) will be popping up all across the local area to share what they’ve found with you. And the best part is, most of it is free! In Ely, LifeLab is bringing Ely Cathedral to life with a whole host of science fun for all the family! On Friday 27th September (7pm – 9.30pm), LifeLab will be transforming the Cathedral into a discovery zone. Tackle a science-themed Escape Room, get some temporary biology-themed body art, explore the wonders of the microscopic world and see another side of our region’s researchers in LifeLab’s Stories from Science exhibition. On Saturday 28th September (10am – 4.30pm), we’ll be in the LifeLab marquee on Cross Green, offering an expanded range of interactive activities: explore the latest in DNA sequencing, extract some DNA of your own, and find out how the earliest life forms arose. There will be activities to appeal to all tastes and ages; whether you like to get hands-on, browse an exhibit, or enjoy a chat, there’s something for you, your friends, and family. Above all, there will be plenty of chance for you to share your opinions and ideas as you chat to the people making exciting discoveries happen. For a 62 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

We welcome you to LifeLab 2019 and look forward to seeing you there!
Join us on 27th and 28th September to make new discoveries. We are living in a global centre for new discoveries. ELY SINFONIA CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIV BEETHOVEN'S 7TH AND SHOSTAKOVICH'S 2N
B
ack in 1999, there was very little music going on in Ely apart from the Cathedral and the Choral Society. Yet every day, talented musicians were making their way from their homes in Ely to take part in community music of all sorts in Cambridge and elsewhere in the area. Behind the scenes, two influential organisations were working to change this. ADeC (Arts Development in East Cambridgeshire) and Ely Cathedral, together with local teachers and professionals, put their heads together and came up with the idea of a community orchestra for Ely.
With the help of an award from the Millennium Festival Fund and with the support of Britten Sinfonia, Ely Sinfonia was born. The orchestra started out fairly modestly, with a handful of local musicians supplemented by “borrowed” ones from Cambridge. They were bolstered by players from the Britten Sinfonia, who provided the backbone for concerts and gave valuable tuition to the locals. The first concerts were given either in Ely Cathedral or The Maltings, with guest conductors and soloists, the latter often from Britten Sinfonia or competitors from young musician of the year competitions. Throughout the early years, Ely Sinfonia owed an enormous debt to ADeC, Ely Cathedral and, in particular, Nicky Adamson from ADeC and Robin

Moore, owner of The Anchor at Sutton Gault, who was the orchestra’s first general manager and publicity manager. He more or less single-handedly built up a sizeable following for Ely Sinfonia, setting the scene for what the orchestra has become today. Ely Sinfonia’s big breakthrough came in 2007 with the appointment of Steve Bingham, first as principal violinist and subsequently as its permanent conductor and artistic director. Under his direction, the orchestra has attracted players
VERSARY WITH A CONCERT OF GREATS - MOZART'S 29TH, ND PIANO CONCERTO, PLAYED BY MARTIN ROSCOE. of the highest calibre and has expanded its repertoire to include most of the large-scale orchestral works. He quickly reinforced the contacts with Ely Cathedral and Ely Sinfonia now regularly provides the orchestra for Cathedral services. In recent years, Ely Sinfonia has performed pieces of all types and genres, and with some of the UK’s leading soloists. In 2018, the orchestra played Holst’s The Planets Suite to a full house in Ely Cathedral, marking one hundred years to the day since the first performance. Ely Sinfonia also regularly commissions new pieces, a recent success being Island, which involved almost 200 local school children. The orchestra’s president, Raphael Wallfisch, has joined Ely Sinfonia several times, and once with his wife, Elizabeth to play the Brahms Double Concerto for Violin and Cello. Other well-known soloists have included Craig Ogden and Matthew Trusler.
For this concert he will be joining the orchestra to play Shostakovich’s second piano concerto, one of the composer’s happiest and best known works, written for his son, Maxim’s nineteenth birthday. The Sinfonia begins with Mozart’s graceful and energetic 29th symphony, written when he was just 18 years old. It finishes with Beethoven’s magnificent Symphony No 7, including the Allegretto, one of the most popular movements of all his symphonies, which was cheered and encored right in the middle of the first two performances.
20TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT long-standing friend of the orchestra, Martin Roscoe is one of the UK’s best loved piano soloists. He is a prolific recitalist and chamber musician and has performed all over the world with eminent conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Mark Elder and Christoph von Dohnányi.
