Welcome to our September / October edition. We are delighted to still be here, serving residential and business communities of Ely with our little magazine. It has been great to have a bit longer to put the magazine together and as a result we have several new businesses supporting us. Thank you to them. Remember to always tell a business you saw them here when calling so they know their Elyi advertising is working. Now we are covering two months at a time, you need to be even more on the ball when sending in information or news about your community group. We will need copy for the November / December issue by October 10th. Mayor Mike Rouse tells us what he has been up to this summer and also continues to keep the city well documented with all his photographs in spite of being busy with his duties. Emily at the museum tells us of the exciting museum developments. Please respond to her appeal for support if you are able. It is great to hear from Bishop Laney sixth form, very appropriate as we start the new term. We also feature a number of local clubs telling us what they do as well as our ever expanding groups and meets reference section. The Maltings plays host to a number of events this season, not least of all the wonderful and entertaining KD Panto, now in its 6th year. It’s never too early to get your tickets. We will be running our usual competition to win free tickets in the November issue. We have a growing number of loyal readers out in the villages who receive the mag from the pickup points or when they come into town. It is good to hear from the Soham Carnival committee as well as hear about the local drama productions there as well as in Witchford. There is always too much to feature so please do send stuff in as early as possible to stand the best chance of inclusion. We wish all our young people a great start to the new term wherever they are.

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN RETIREMENT LIVING AND RESIDENTIAL CARE - THE ELEGANCE OF ROSLYN COURT Last month, Madeleine and I were invited for a tour of the new McCarthy & Stone development on Lisle Lane. I must say, having featured the development in the magazine earlier this year, we were dying to get a peak inside Roslyn Court and see what the place has to offer. The units have been going like hot cakes with just a few remaining 1 and 2 bedroom apartments available. It is a lovely place and we were really impressed with the attention to detail and also the thought that had obviously gone into the design and also the many services available to the owners which can be tailored according to need and budget. There isn’t room here to describe them all but do have a look at the full brochure or website (see the contact details at the end of this article) The minute you step into the light and welcoming foyer, you feel the quality of the finish. This is one of the many reasons McCarthy & Stone have become known as the leading builders of owner-occupied retirement housing in the country. During over 40 years of operation they have built more than 51,000 apartments nationwide and the depth of their experience really shows.
can meet each other over a very reasonably priced lunch in the bistro or have some peace and quiet in their own home. The central area has been cleverly designed so that space can be sectioned off for private gatherings if required. It is quite important to some people that they can still have friends and family to stay and there is no problem here at Roslyn Court with an overnight stay costing only £25 per night in the beautifully furnished guest suite. We purposely haven’t gone into the financial side of things here as there just isn’t room, but also that is something that will be very different according to circumstances and needs careful consideration. McCarthy & Stone are very happy to explain and advise on all the costs, both for purchase and ongoing, so you know exactly what you are agreeing to before you commit to anything. Further information can be obtained by calling: 0800 882 1525 or by going to: www.mccarthyandstone.co.uk/roslyncourt where you can browse the website or order a free brochure.
The 2-bedroom show apartment we saw was beautifully appointed with thoughtful touches like waist-height electric sockets, a stylish wet room, generous room sizes, underfloor heating, a corner kitchen with everything easily in reach and even a switch to operate that hard to reach window across the counter. A favourite feature for me was that all the doors open flat against the wall in each room, allowing you to keep them open if desired for free movement. This is particularly good for wheelchair users and just a great way of making life easier and uncluttered. When you step outside you see the feather in the cap of this particular development which is the expansive courtyard garden. Here you can stroll along the smooth paved paths framed by maturing shrubs and hedges or (as they did earlier in the year) enjoy a Royal Wedding-themed Prosecco cream tea with your friends, one of many themed culinary events the bistro staff like to plan for homeowners’ during the year. Roslyn Court offers the best of both worlds; the privacy of your own spacious apartment as well as elegant communal and social areas. Homeowners’ 8 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

ELY MAYOR
NEWS and ENGAGEMENTS By the end of July, in the two months since becoming Mayor, we attended 69 events, which did not include some of the committees of the City Council. The two most frequently asked questions were: ‘Are you enjoying being Mayor again?’ and ‘Aren’t you hot in those robes?’ The answer to both is ‘Yes.’ It is a privilege to meet so many people and attend so many different events showing what a vibrant place Ely is these days and while there are several chains of office that might be seen at events, I believe that wearing the red robes of office, however hot this summer, adds something to the status of Mayor.

visitors means to our local shops and restaurants. I also believe that all young people from wherever in the world have so much more in common than differences. There is a universality about fashion, music, films, sport. There are similar shared hopes and ambitions that make me feel that the more everyone travels and meets each other, the better understanding we will have. Ignorance and suspicion leads to conflict. For the future peace and well being of the planet, young people getting to know other young people and understand more about their countries, will do more than any much trumpeted exchanges between world leaders. I would like to think so anyway and meanwhile we do our best in Ely. Mike
This summer I have done a number of ‘meet and greets’ for overseas visitors to Ely, particularly students of language schools and exchange visit organisers. It has particularly been my pleasure to meet many Chinese young people to the Sessions House and tell them something of the history of Ely, the building itself and what the Mayor does, although I’m not sure how much they have understood. We exchange small gifts and pose for photographs and selfies and delightful, respectful young people they are. The Mayor at Ely Railway Station congratulating them as overall winners in the 2018 City of Ely Council Ely in Bloom competition.
At one session I was asked, ‘What would a young Chinese person have to do to adapt to life in England?’ A question to really make me think. I am pleased to say that I believe Ely is a very welcoming and safe place for visitors from abroad and I hope we realise the economic benefits that hosting such 22 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

As the school holidays draw to a close, our thoughts naturally turn to what is in store for the younger members of our community over the coming 12 months. In particular, those who face the challenges the final year of secondary school. It is easy to think that, for those 15 and 16 year olds, and their families, the next big challenge lies in the examinations which next summer will bring. The truth, however, is that there is a more pressing issue, that of decisions about post 16 education. Before the applications can be made, there comes the reading of prospectuses; the seeking advice of families, teachers and friends and the visits to the post 16 providers’ ‘open evenings’.
Here in East Cambridgeshire, we are lucky that there is an array of choice. Although this can sometimes be bewildering, each school has staff with the expertise to be able to guide and inform. For some, the choice will be easy; they will be clear about which subjects they wish to study, and the grades they are expected to achieve next summer.
These factors alone may give them a shortlist of 2 or 3 providers. For others, the range of possibilities will be much broader. Travel is an important consideration; in East Cambridgeshire many of our young people can travel up to 90 minutes each way to reach their post 16 provision, with the costs, not just financial, but also time and in some cases wellbeing, soon mounting up. That said, some courses will only be found at providers some distance from home, and the daily commute provides an opportunity to experience the ‘real world’; an opportunity some young people truly relish. If you’re a family embarking on this journey, some good advice would be this: visit lots of providers, take advantage of as many opportunities as you can to see and hear for yourself what providers offer. Speak to the current students, ask them their honest opinion about what the course is like, what else is on offer, and what support there is if things start to go wrong. Adam Steels leads Bishop Laney Sixth Form at Ely College. Bishop Laney Sixth Form’s Open Evening is taking place on Thursday 1st November 2018 from 6:30pm

ELY MUSEUM We’re planning a complete redevelopment of Ely Museum but we need your help to make it possible! The support of local people & business is essential to the success of our project at the museum. We still need to raise over £100,000 so that we can unlock a grant of £1.67 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, a national organisation which distributes a share of National Lottery funding to support a variety of heritage projects across the United Kingdom. Excitingly, we’ve now submitted our final plans & application, and have a long wait ahead of us as we await the outcome!
Education room: We’ll build a new education room so we can welcome school children from across East Cambridgeshire to learn about their heritage with hands-on, exciting visits.
We want to create a museum that celebrates and explores people’s influence on the Fen landscape, and its impact on them. We need a museum that is accessible to all, has improved facilities as well as new spaces to engage adults & children with their history. This project will allow us to create exciting and interactive exhibition galleries for the whole family to enjoy, we’ll be building an education room suitable for a 21st century where we can walk with virtual reality dinosaurs, recreate the Littleport Riots trials & lots, lots more. We also want to preserve our historic building here at the Old Gaol, using locally made, traditional materials, we’ll be using gault clay tiles of the roof, restoring the historic gaol windows and revealing lots of hidden features of the building The support of local people & local business is more important than ever to Ely Museum! Your donation will help us unlock this grant and create a new & exciting museum to celebrate the amazing history of our city! Donations can be made in person, by cheque (made payable to Ely Museum please) or online at www.elymuseum. org.uk/support-us/support-us Emily Allen Custodian at Ely Museum
Felons Yard / Window: We’ll fill our historic Felons Yard with traditional fenland plants and also restore the historic windows that tell us about the buildings life as the Bishops Gaol between 1679-1836.
Gallery: All of the galleries in the museum will become exciting and interactive places for the whole family to enjoy.

ANYONE FOR TABLE TENNIS? If you have ever played table tennis, or otherwise known as Ping Pong, you will appreciate that initially it is a little harder than it looks to push a small, white, hollow ball over a low net…but it is without doubt a lot of fun. The origins of the sport are thought to go back to the 1880’s when it was an after dinner pastime played by those in British high society. More of a parlour game, it was literally played on the dining table using various items for bats such as cigar boxes, books and drum like paddles. This form of English tennis was able to be played indoors by anyone but on a smaller scale and without the fear of rain spoiling play. Photos by Dan Odling
The game has progressed hugely to date and it is estimated that over 300 million people worldwide now play the sport whether at school, work, in a local club, for fitness, fun or competitively. New technology continues to perfect the equipment and make the sport much faster, more technical and far more challenging while structured rules set by governing bodies such as Table Tennis England ensure that there is fair play at whatever level you participate. Ely Table Tennis Club was formed back in the 1950’s and has produced some very talented players who have competed at a National and International level. The club has moved venue to halls in and around Ely several times as it grew and evolved. The Club now boasts over 50 members from the age of 10 up to 76.
Last year Ely Table Tennis Club received recognition of their commitment to encourage more local people to the sport when they received £9,600 funding from Sport England. The grant has helped the club to purchase new equipment, train coaches, hold tournaments, increase membership and find new venues to play at such as Witchford Village College Sports Centre which holds practice and coaching sessions every Monday from 7-9pm. The latest satellite venue opened recently at Littleport Leisure Centre. Practice sessions are held every Thursday evening from 7 to 9pm. Everyone is welcome, whatever age and ability. The club offers a free taster session so there is no excuse for anyone not to have a go. Bats can be provided but you are recommended to wear suitable sports footwear. Subsequent two hour practice sessions are £4 for adults and £2 for juniors. Annual Membership is £10 for adults and £5 for juniors. The club include free one-toone or group coaching to help all players improve at their own pace. Ely Table Tennis Club are also keen to recruit new members to their league teams, which play competitively in different divisions in both the Ely and Cambridge Leagues. Table tennis is an excellent sport for getting fit and there are proven mental health benefits too. So, if you have never played, or used to play at school or in a team, then get down to a free taster session at Witchford or Littleport for a warm welcome and lots of fun. STIRLING TO ESSEN Roger Leivers’ new book, Stirling to Essen, tells the story of Squadron Leader Drummond Wilson, from his traumatic birth through to the crash in Godmanchester on the 11th April 1942. A remarkable man who rallied sports cars, ferried aircraft to the frontline squadrons, instructed young RAF pilots during the war, was a MOD test pilot on secret aircraft, flew over 70 different types of aircraft and eventually joined XV Squadron at RAF Alconbury in October 1941. Besides telling his life story the book also connects with all those who served alongside him, his crew and the raids they took part in. Attacks on the Ruhr and the three German Battleships moored at Brest. Two died in the crash. Of the six that survived, three would not live to see VE Day. Having traced nearly all the families Roger has been able to piece together their individual life stories, uncovering amazing tales of survival, sheer luck and misfortune. The story connects to the Battle of Britain through Drummonds best friend,
Photos left: Matthew Drummond Henderson Wilson ('known as Drummond') wright: XV Squadron at RAF Alconbury sat beneath a Short Stirling Mk1
who flew out of Biggin Hill, and, the Holocaust, where a fiancé of one of the crew ended up in Theresienstadt. The repsonse to the book has been overwhelming with the original print run selling out in record time. An urgent reprint was rushed through in February of this year. If you missed the Ely Cathedral signing, then signed and dedicated copies can be ordered, please contact rogerleivers@yahoo.co.uk (All profits from the book go to Godmanchester Stirling Fund which donates to national and local causes) In recognition of the Ely Bandsmen who served in WWI.

PLANNING FOR ELY FIREWORKS 2018 WELL UNDERWAY! On Saturday 10th November this year, the annual Ely Fireworks night will be a truly community representative event organised by three local Rotary Clubs and the nine groups of the Ely District Scouts. Having worked together to raise the necessary funding and organisation from scratch, plans are now well underway. The East Cambridgeshire District Council, The Dean and Chapter of Ely Cathedral and Kings School are all supporting this event by granting permission to use the parkland. The world famous and well-respected company that dealt with the opening and closing parts of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Kimbolton Fireworks Ltd are to present what promises to be a magnificent display. Schools will be encouraged to enter the Guy Fawkes competition and there will be a bonfire that
Hampers for Every Occasion
should be set alight at 6.30pm and stay alight! Entry to the event will be by ticket and limited on grounds of safety. A large crowd is expected and so it is advised that tickets are bought beforehand as a discounted rate. The prices will not be increased from last year but family tickets will only be available beforehand from local outlets and on line. Advance sales: Adults £4.00, Concessions £2.50, Family Ticket £12.00. On the gate: Adults £5.00, Concessions £3.00. As it is a community event and not run by private companies all accounts of income and expenditure will be available to view online and all net profits will be donated to local charities. KD has grown from its humble beginnings to the established, polished company that it is today and Katherine and Daniel (the producers and founders of KD) feel the responsibility of meeting the ever rising expectations of their loyal audiences. They and their team work tirelessly to ensure Ely gets a high quality pantomime and an entertaining programme throughout the year. For many locals, a visit to the Ely Maltings panto has become a firm - not to be missed- fixture in their Christmas festivities. Knowing this is what inspires Katherine and Daniel to work so hard at developing entertainment with plenty of belly laughs, surprises and usual panto shennigans. Audiences leave having had a great time! ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ was the very first pantomime KD produced at The Maltings in 2013, so it’s exciting to be returning to the title in 2018, although there is a brand-new script, new characters, new costumes and new scenery! It will be very different to the last one! Lots of surprises! Daniel is also returning into the role of ‘Dame Trott’ having taken 3 years off from the heels and frocks! “It gets harder each year because we have to top the previous year.” Daniel explains. “We like to create something brand new for our audiences, and always try to increase the production values from the year before.” Katherine lets us into a few secrets mentioning that some years have presented a ‘pantomime’ within a pantomime! In 2014’s production of ‘Cinderella’, Tracey Beaker star Ben Hanson, who was playing Buttons, slipped and broke his arm mid show! In true ‘the show must go on style’ the cast rattled through the rest of the show covering all the lines and rehearsed an understudy in ready for the evening show! Ben took a day of rest (unwillingly – strict rules by the doctors) and returned the next day on stage with the costume addition of a ‘sling.’! Sometimes these things do happen, and the professionalism of the cast and crew shone through and ensured audiences still had the best time possible! With dates booked into The Maltings for the foreseeable future, Ely can definitely be assured that the Pantomime will be around for many generations to come! Oh yes it will!
This year’s pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ runs from the 14th December 2018 – 2nd January 2019. To book tickets online visit www.kdtheatre.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01353 725026

Want to treat yourself to the best turkey for Christmas? Why not try one of our Free Range Norfolk Black Turkeys www.freerangechristmasturkey.co.uk
Why are our turkeys so amazing?
They are slow growing – allowed to mature as nature intended They are free range – allowed to exhibit natural behaviours They put down a good layer of fat – meaning they are self-basting They are hand plucked – someone has taken the time to carefully prepare your bird They are dry aged – they have hung for a minimum of 7 days allowing the flavour to develop
And don’t just take our word for it, here is some feedback from some of our wonderful customers: “For 32 years of married life we have had the obligatory turkey at Christmas although we always complain it is dry and tasteless. Not this year – thank you for an absolutely fantastic turkey – tasty and moist. We’ll be back again next year!” - Nick “I have been meaning to write and say how much we thoroughly enjoyed our turkey. It is the first time we bought through yourselves and I can honestly say it is the best turkey we have ever had. I look forward to ordering from you again in the future.” – Kathleen Make sure you don’t miss out, why not order one from our website today? www.freerangechristmasturkey.co.uk
