Hello Ely! This is our third issue since lockdown measures came into force and it is so nice to see some events being advertised. Although all of our big Ely city events have been cancelled ( Eel day, Apple Fest, Aqua Fest, Fireworks and Light Switch on event) the Visit Ely team have been creative and put on a very successful series of walks in partnership with local eating establishments and have done a great job of championing our local businesses through their social media. Many local groups have continued in some form online and continue to do so for some time to come, but we now have the groups and meets listings back in the magazine and will build it up again as groups are able to reconvene and let us know new information. Congratulations to Mayor Sue Austen on being elected Mayor in a virtual ceremony streamed live on Facebook. She has already been getting out and about in Ely mingling on market days (as much as social distancing allows) and as her first official duty, laid a wreath at the memorial to commemorate VJ day on 15th August. (see photo) Babylon Arts and Ely Library have collaborated to stage an exciting drive-in Cinema event at Lancaster Way Business Park (see page 33) and the lovely people at KD Theatre make a welcome return to the Dean’s Garden with Treasure Island. I am sure by the time you read this they will be pretty nearly sold out. Keep your fingers crossed that the weather holds and they have a wonderful run this week.

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update
City of Ely Council Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, Cambs CB7 4EG Phone: 01353 661016 Fax: 01353 667057
The extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic saw the City elect a new Mayor and Deputy with their consorts in a virtual mayor making thanks to Mark Cooney and the Spotted in Ely studios.
THANKS TO OUTGOING MAYOR MIKE ROUSE With the rest of the council participating through Zoom, outgoing Mayor, Mike Rouse and the Mayoress, his daughter Lauren, thanked everyone for their support over the past two years and two months. Some 250 engagements big and small had been carried out during the year before the lockdown. He was particularly grateful that the new idea of a community supper had been such a success at the end of February and that he had been able to enjoy a 80th Birthday celebration at that event with what was also his 50th year as a city councillor.
THE MAYOR’S CHARITY Thanks to a very generous donation from KD Theatre he was able to present some Mayor’s Charity cheques to the City of Ely Military Band, .the wonderful Therapy Dogs, the Air Cadets and the Army cadets and three individuals: Rosie Scott, Ian McKendrick and Ruby Crystal Williams of Ely Rocks. The outgoing Mayor was then thanked by Cllr Alison Whelan who praised his work for both reforming the business practices of the council and his support for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Ely.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ELY’S NEW MAYOR & DEPUTY MAYOR The badges of office were then handed over to Cllr Sue Austen and her consort Cllr Arnie Arnold. Cllr Austen has been a city councillor since 2015, is a current East Cambs District Councillor and former Cambridgeshire County Councillor. She brings a wealth of life experience to the office and Cllr Arnold, while only elected to the city council last year has much knowledge and experience gained when his wife, the former councillor Alison Arnold, was deputy Mayor from 2018-2019. The newly elected Mayor said that she was fully aware of the responsibilities and duties attached to the role and was passionate about Ely and our community. She is looking forward to meeting people and raising the profile of the City Council.
16 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
The 2020 Mayormaking was an altogether unique affair streamed live from The Spotted in Ely Studios. A new experience for many councillors and well attended online by Ely residents.
Another new councillor elected in 2019, Cllr Richard Morgan, was unanimously elected Deputy Mayor and his wife, Jane, will serve as his consort. Cllr Austen has asked Father Paul Andrews of St Peter’s Church to be her chaplain
COMMITTEE APPOINTED The annual Mayor Making also saw the appointment of the new Committees and as part of an ongoing re-structuring of the council there will be four main committees: Personnel,
Finance and Governance, Climate Change and Environment, Assets and Tourism and Town Centre. These will be supported by various working groups..
CONTINUING ONLINE For the foreseeable future all the council meetings will continue to be virtual meetings using Zoom and members of the public are very welcome to join the meetings but they will need to contact the clerk in advance for the passcode.wait www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 17
AVOID FOOD WASTE
49 CLARE’S KITCHEN, LITTLEPORT
GRAIN CULTURE, ST MARYS STREET, ELY
Food waste is a massive global issue that contributes heavily to climate change. Globally, we waste 3.5 million tonnes of food every single day and that food doesn’t just disintegrate naturally into the earth. It pumps out harmful gas as it decomposes in landfill, causing our planet to heat up like a greenhouse. Since launching the Re-imagine Community Larder we have rescued the equivalent of 35,000 meals & we are proud of what we have achieved but there is more work to do. Our focus always remains to primarily support those who don’t have enough healthy, fresh and nutritious food to eat. We are so pleased to be launching a new project with TooGoodToGo to bring you Magic Freegan Boxes, a weekly act of protest against food
18 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
waste that everyone can participate in; readymade boxes of groceries we intercept. A family of four can save 10kg of food from being wasted for £10. That’s 520kg of food a year! You order & pay via the app, then collect your food or will be delivered locally. The short dates means you may need to eat it, cook it or freeze it. They will contain fruit & vegetables, bakery & groceries. The food is discounted because it’s past or close to the ‘best before’ date, although still fine to eat. Get the TooGoodToGo App today so we can eradicate the stigma attached to food poverty & food waste.Being a waste warrior in our community just got a whole lot easier folks. See FB page for details. A BIT OF HISTORY
AS THE NATION COMMEMORATES VJ DAY ELY MUSEUM TELLS THE STORY OF ONE OF OUR LOCAL ELY SOLDIERS
Captain Beckett leading former Cambs FEPoWs through Ely in November 1945
Saturday 15th August marked 75 years since VJ Day - the surrender of Japan and the end of the Second World War. For Ely and the surrounding villages, like many places across East Anglia and beyond, this news not only meant peace but also the eventual return of hundreds of local men captured by the Japanese at Singapore in February 1942. These men, many serving in the 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment (part of the 18th (East Anglian) Division), had taken part in the bitter fighting trying to hold back the Japanese advance in January and February 1942. It would take months and sometimes years to find out if their loved ones had been killed in the fighting, were missing, or if they were now Prisoners of War.
scavenged scraps and electrical parts. Writing about it later he said: "The lack of reliable news and the prevalence of wild rumours was at this time a bad influence on morale; we had been cut off from the outside world for some four months and it was vital to obtain reliable information. I discussed the matter with Victor Mapey (Commanding Officer) and he was very anxious that an attempt should be made to construct and run a wireless set, if at all possible. Despite huge personal risk if the wireless was discovered, John and several other men were able to build and hide it succesfully. They managed to hide it in resealed bully beef tins when transferred to thailand. Once at the next camp, with the assistance of an officer of the Royal Signals who had been an engineer for the BBC, several more portable, smaller versions were built from the parts.
The conditions and treatment endured by these Far East Prisoners of War (FEPoWs) over the next 3 1/2 years can hardly be put into words. Starved, beaten and used as JGA Beckett as Mayor slave labour in the most horrendous of Ely dated 1978 jungle conditions, many succumbed to disease or the cruelty of their captors. Despite all the hardship and at great risk John later wrote the following about the if discovered, many were still secretly defiant of wireless:"The Cambridgeshire Wireless operated their captors, including a well known local Ely from June 1942 to March 1944, and though a figure - John Goodwyn Allden Beckett. good deal of sweat and bad language, if not tears, were expended on it, at least it proved a very good John Beckett, nephew and godson of Lt. Col. stimulant to morale at a time when it was most Archer, was born in Ely in 1914. Once of age needed." he followed in his uncle's footsteps becoming both a solicitor and taking a commission in the Captain Beckett returned home after the War Cambridgeshire Regiment (TA). By the time of the and became an influential and well known figure fighting at Singapore, Captain Beckett was serving in Ely. He continued to serve in the TA for many in the 2nd Battalion alongside many other men years, reaching the rank of Colonel. He is well from the Isle of Ely. Four months after his capture, remembered in Ely where he lived, worked, served John, along with several other men, came up with as Mayor and was involved in many organisations the plan of assembling a secret wireless set from including Ely Museum. 22 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

FRESH, with its botanical vibe, will house one small, and two large studios, and have space for a café. They are also looking to hear from yoga and boxing teachers, osteopaths, physios and/or counsellors who may be interested in renting space.
A We’re creating something that is going to impact so many people!
lice Loombe, FRESH founder, talks about what they’re hoping to bring with FRESH: “A big thank you to Sport England for their support, without which this wouldn’t have been possible. We want to create a kind and open culture at FRESH, where we can support everybody with their physical and mental well-being and be a hub for other local businesses. The vision is so much bigger than Sara and me. We’re creating something that is going to impact so many people.” If you can’t get to Ely they will still be running online sessions at www.freshandwell.co.uk To keep up to date on the FRESH news please take a look at the FRESH website - www.freshandwell.co.uk You can also follow them on Facebook (@freshandwell) and Instagram (@fresh.social).

LIONS OF LITTLEPORT In Ely and Littleport there is always a tremendous sense of community spirit and kindness. During the pandemic all community groups continue to provide vital support to all local residents. All around the world this is seen too as we cope with uncertain times. Lions Clubs from all over the world are helping with the Lebanon crisis. This crisis has displaced approximately 300,000 people in the areas surrounding Beirut. The Lions Club International Foundation is partnering with Lions in Lebanon, now providing approximately $10,000 in immediate relief from the devastating massive explosion. During the COVID 19 crisis too Lions clubs have been funding food banks and providing support all around the world. We, as Lions Club of Littleport, have funded our local food bank and have started doing quizzes as well as games on Zoom to raise money for local charities. Recruitment of new members to our club continues to flourish too. Lions Clubs are vital to communities. During a brief visit to the Norfolk Broads recently I was reminded of the importance of Lions Clubs, where I spotted a social club and charity shop set up for the community of

A NEW CHURCH FOR ELY TO LAUNCH ONLINE
A new church serving Ely and the surrounding villages will launch online on Sunday 27th September. Jubilee Church will be streaming services on Facebook Live, accessible to everyone from the comfort of their own home. The new church is co-led by Ali Jones and Russell Burgess. Russell recently moved to Ely with his family to help lead the new church. ‘We can’t wait to get going! It’s going to be an adventure, and we can’t wait to see what God is going to do.’ Ali – whose family has been part of the Ely community for 9 years – is excited to be launching the new church online. ‘It’s not the obvious way to launch a church but we’re really excited by the possibilities and the opportunity for people to hear the good news of Jesus and be part of church really easily’.
SPRINGHEAD MEADOW A HAVEN FOR INSECTS AND SPIDERS IN OUR CITY
Springhead Meadow is a 4-hectare field bounded by the main London-to-King’s Lynn railway line, Springhead Lane and Pocket Park. The habitats present comprise rough grassland, ditches (filled by Yellow Flag or reed bed), a wild-flower meadow and a small pond. It is a haven for a wide range of invertebrates. The meadow is at its best in May, June and July, when many pollinators, including hoverflies such as the Marsh Hoverfly (pictured), exploit the abundant nectar and pollen resources available in the summer months. Leafcutter bees particularly favour trefoils which abound on the meadow in June and July. Noctule Bats, the largest UK species, hunt moths high above the meadow at dusk on warm summer evenings. Occasionally, uncommon birds, such as Jack Snipe, also appear on the meadow. (cont’d over)
Part of the Relational Mission family of churches, Jubilee is supported by City Church Cambridge and The Bridge Church in St Ives with the purpose of ‘Loving God, Loving People, Loving Ely’. ‘There are about 30 of us so far,’ says Ali. ‘All ages, and many backgrounds.’

COMMUNITY UPDATES Recent studies of the fly, bee and beetle fauna of the meadow have revealed that it is very speciesrich. For example, a number of rare fly species have been recorded, such as the spectacular large soldier-flies, the Ornate Brigadier and the Flecked General (pictured), both of which breed in the ditches. Studies at dusk have also revealed that the meadow has an interesting mosquito fauna, including one particularly uncommon species.

Ely St John’s Community Primary School Governor Vacancy
Are you interested in education and how schools work? Would you like to make a positive difference to the life chances of children? Do you want to share your skills to make that difference? Would you enjoy being part of a team that provides critical challenge and support to the leadership team whose aim is driving up standards? Being a Governor is a real commitment, but is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. It requires regular attendance at formal meetings, which are usually held in the evening, although getting to know the school well requires some planned time in school during the day. The best way to find out about the role and why people do it is to talk to someone who is already a Governor or you could contact Ms Liz Bassett, the head teacher, head@elystjohns.cambs.sch.uk who will be only too happy to talk to you. Schools look for a variety of experience and skills across their governing skills, eg education, finance, HR or business. Training is important for all Governors and is readily available. We are currently looking for a co-opted Governor. Selection is undertaken by our Governing Body. Does this role interest you? Do you want to find out more information? If so, take the first step and contact us on office@elystjohns.cambs.sch.uk and express your interest. We will be pleased to talk to you and we will send you all the information you need to make the decision whether to apply. Fishermen of Ely
It seems an unusual combination, a sea shanty band based on the Isle of Ely, but that’s what ‘Isle ‘ave a Shanty’ are. “Shanties are great fun to sing and you don’t necessarily have to be near the sea to sing them” says ‘Sea Sick’ Stu, one of the band members. “There are some fantastic songs out there, tales of woe and long lost loves as well as the misbehaviour of sailors, grog and a bit of good old fashioned debauchery! Most were written to keep the spirits up during hours of hard toil on the ships and it’s the same spirit that we try to keep when we perform them to our audiences”. However, being based on the Isle of Ely, hence the band’s name, did not mean that there was no connection to waterways. ‘Captain’ Kevin, another of the singers, decided that there was enough Fenland history to come up with a song of his own. Kevin explains “I was reading ‘The Story of Ely’ (penned by Ely’s own Mike Rouse) and I was intrigued by the way that the Isle of Ely was formed, and ultimately the city itself. I thought of how significant fishing and boatmen were in supplying Ely with food and goods and thought that there must be a song in there somewhere”. Kevin brought his lyrics along to the band’s rehearsal and in no time at all a song was formed. “We had lots of ideas for a tune and between us we needed to find an arrangement that would work. It needed to have a catchy refrain and a 34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
harmony line, something that we drew on several sources to find, and eventually it fell into place”. So ‘Fishermen of Ely’ became the first self-penned song to make the group’s set list and is already becoming a firm favourite. “I couldn’t be happier with how the song has developed. The band has come so far in a relatively short space of time and now that we are singing our own tunes as well as those traditional nautical ones, it feels very special” smiles Captain Kev as he shakes his tambourine and heads back to the rehearsal, ready to help the band finetune their live act to give their audiences a show to remember. ‘Fishermen of Ely’ can be heard by visiting the bands website. Isle ‘ave a Shanty are available for bookings and are made up of Able Seaman Andrew Newton, Lee ‘Kiss Me’ Harvey, Elliott C Spray, Long John Tony Calladine, Sea Sick Stuart Green and Captain Kevin King.

ELY LIFELONG LEARNERS Venue: The Countess Free Church, Chapel Street, Ely, CB6 1AD (parking for blue badge holders only).
This eight week course offered by Ely Lifelong Learners (ELLs) takes us on a journey with celebrated Russian composers who faced the challenge of linking European musical language with Russian tradition.
