GRRLS ROCK CAMP ELY For young women and non-binary and trans young people aged 12-18, especially welcoming LGBTQI and young people from Black, Asian and minoritized communities. Musician Emma Kupa and Babylon Arts have joined forces to enable young women and nonbinary and trans young people to have a go at playing the drums, bass, and guitar and singing, with the teaching and support of a diverse group of women and non-binary and trans facilitators who have played in bands, toured and even been on national radio. Over three days in October half-term, at The Maltings (25th October) and Centre E (26-27th October) in Ely, there will be opportunities to form bands with like-minded young people and rehearse together with all the equipment needed. An introduction to songwriting will also form part of the event with a focus on fun and creativity. More info here: https://www.babylonarts.org.uk/ news/view,grrls-rock-camp-ely_22841.htm Emma learned the guitar as a teenager and has played in bands ever since. She is currently a member of Cambridge based indie-pop trio Mammoth Penguins and also releases music under her solo moniker Emma Kupa. With 20 years’ experience writing and recording music, Emma has toured across Europe and the USA, playing intimate gigs and large festivals such as Latitude. 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Her music is regularly played on BBC radio 6 music. Emma Kupa says: “Anyone can learn to play an instrument and rock out! But women, non-binary and trans people, especially LGBTQI+ and those from minoritised ethnic groups, who can face prejudice and abuse, have to overcome more barriers and have fewer opportunities in the music industry.” Emma Kupa and Babylon Arts aim to provide a safe, nurturing and joyful environment in which young people can develop musically, personally and socially. No prior experience is needed, and it’s free to attend. To find out more about the event and how to get involved, keep an eye on the Babylon ARTS website for updates Grrls Rock Camp Ely is developed from Babylon Arts’ Creative Ideas Lab. This opportunity enabled artists and creative practitioners from across East Cambridgeshire to develop their ideas for engaging communities in the district, in arts and culture. Nine creative practitioners were shortlisted to discuss their ideas with the Babylon Arts’ team. Emma Kupa’s idea was selected to receive a commission to test out her idea of a girls/ LGBTQI+ band. The Creative Ideas Lab was part of Babylon Arts' work funded through the Culture Recovery Fund.

ELY HEREWARD ROTARY CLUB We are a new-style, informal Rotary Club, open to both men and women of all ages. We're looking for enthusiastic people to come and join our group in support of communities both local and further afield.
We have a very successful and continuing affiliation with a school in The Gambia, where the class-rooms which our fund-raising has helped build are being equipped for science and vocational training.
We make a major contribution to community events, such as Aquafest, Ely Fireworks, the Potato Race and Apple Day. We also fund-raise for local charities with a range of events, including our mulled wine stall at Christmas.
You may be somebody who's just moved to the area, somebody who enjoys joining in, or want to find something active, enjoyable and worthwhile to do where you live. If you found satisfaction in volunteering during the Covid pandemic, come and meet us.
Our aims are best achieved through the fun our Rotary members find in fellowship and shared activities. The events we organise bring a sense of achievement in a job well done. We also take pride in keeping our environment looking attractive - litter-picking around St Peter's and maintaining the Back Hill Garden.
We have short meetings twice a month and also organise social events and trips out. If you would like to meet us and hear more about what we do, see our Facebook page or contact Janet Porter at j.e.porter@btinternet.com We look forward to meeting you!

ELY LITTER PICKERS
The Ely Litter Pickers stand at the recent Ely Cathedral Green Fair saw lots of interested people stop and chat with volunteers happy to talk about the work that the group has been doing. Treasurer Brian Calvert says, ‘Since forming in February 2021, we’ve received a grant, donations and crowdfunding totalling £1500, as well as generous contributions from local businesses such as Fwd.IP, Waitrose and Cheffins’. Run by a small but dedicated committee, all money raised is used to purchase equipment that a willing (and growing) band of volunteers can borrow or buy to help keep Ely and local villages clean and free of unsightly and potentially harmful litter. The group’s kit list now comprises of over 120 litter pickers of various sizes, 80 bag hoops, plus branded hi-vis vests (donated by Sylhet Tandoori). The group has seen over 100+ free loans of equipment to local individuals and families, all keen to get involved. Encouraging and entertaining posts on the group Facebook page often say how satisfying and rewarding (and addictive!) it is.
The group wish to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone that has volunteered or donated. The impact is clearly visible, with Ely and surrounds looking so much better for it. New members are always welcome, so to get involved search ‘Ely Litter Pickers’ on Facebook. Ely Litter Pickers are making a real difference! Here are some of the recent Facebook posts that group members have shared to encourage each other along the way! From Brian....
From a visitor from Waterbeach...
The influence of the group can also be seen in the wider community, with Ely Litter Pickers loaning equipment to start-up groups in Little Downham and Soham, as well as helping establish hubs in Littleport (sponsored by SE Electrical Services), Little Downham and Pymoor. Brian continues, ‘Working with local schools, and the Scouts and Brownies, members of the committee have helped organise various litter picking sessions with all equipment provided and are currently supporting five local young people doing their Duke of Edinburgh’s volunteering award’.

A BIT OF FENLAND HISTORY - SEPTEMBERS PAST from Mike Petty on Facebook
Last Livestock Market – Ely past snips September 11th 1981 A 100-year-old tradition came to an end when cattle and pigs were auctioned at the last live-stock market held in Ely.
Soham station uneconomic - Cambridgeshire Daily News September 3rd 1964 Passenger services on the Ely to Newmarket line are to be withdrawn on January 4th and Soham and Fordham stations will be closed. Alternative bus services will be provided, though the stationmaster says that the present system is quite adequate to cope with the two or three passengers who use the stations. The line is uneconomic: six trains stop a day during summer but none run at time when a heavy load of passengers could be expected. The staff of 12 at each station will be retained to deal with freight traffic such as scrap iron from Middlesbrough and flowers from local nurseries. Next day... A journey on the fated Ely-Newmarket railway line shows why it has become the victim of Beeching’s axe. The only regular traveller is a British Railway employee who uses it to get home to Fordham. Two people got on at Ely – both BR staff – and the only other passengers were an American couple touring Britain. There was nobody waiting at Soham or Fordham. Sometimes up to 30 people get on the Ely-bound station at Soham before changing trains to Cambridge but mostly only a few people use it. This story appeared in a Cambridge newspaper on 3rd September 1964
During the past few years the market had had less business as more farmers switched from animals to arable farming, so the auctioneers who ran the market Cheffins, Grain & Chalk have decided to call it a day. It was a particularly sad day for the auctioneer, Mr John Grain, who first started work at the market exactly 48 years ago to the day. Before business started, Mr Grain, the third generation of his family to be involved in the market, said: “It’s a sad day for me”. He said the market was founded by his grandfather, Mr Arthur Trett Grain and continued under his father’s guidance until he took over. At 10.45am Mr Grain rang the bell for the last time to summon farmers, dealers and onlookers to the final cattle sale. This time there was only one animal to be sold – a black Hereford brought along by Mr Sidney King, a Littleport farmer. It tipped the scales at 680kg and was bought by King Brothers of Holbeach, Lincolnshire for 100p a kilo. Then 78-year-old Mr Lee of Ely – a market hand for 63 years until he was forced to retire – was called to ring the bell to herald the start of the final pig sale. The bidding was brisk for the 50 pigs on offer, the last one being sold by Mr William Darby of Haddenham. Entering into the spirit of the occasion the bidders pushed the price up to 290p per kg, when it was bought by Mr Sidney King junior, of Littleport.

ELY WILDSPACE Ely Wildspace bee-hotels host scarce bee! Two bee hotels were erected on Ely Common in 2018 with the aim of supporting populations of our native wild bees. In early August this year activity at the hotels was dominated by a small ‘resin bee’, the large headed resin bee (Heriades truncorum) which nested in good numbers (more than 50 nests). This is a scarce bee with a distribution concentrated in SE England. The Ely population is at the northernmost limit of this bee’s range in the UK. Unlike honey or bumblebees, the female has an orange brush of stiff hairs under her abdomen where she collects pollen, as well as brushes on her back legs. Yellow composites such as ragworts and hawkweeds are important
resources of pollen and nectar for this and many other wild bees. While unpopular among the equestrian and livestock communities, ragworts support an astonishing range of biodiversity, and it is pleasing to see that in July the Royal Horticultural Society awarded a Gold Medal to a garden of weeds containing abundant ragwort at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park, Cheshire, in recognition of the importance of ‘weeds’ as floral resources for insects. Get involved by visiting elywildspace.org.uk or email lpcre@elywildspace.org.uk. Find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Breaks for carers in East Cambridgeshire COULD YOU HELP PROVIDE BREAKS FOR CARERS IN EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE? Local charity Caring Together have launched a new service to help people looking after a family member or friend in East Cambridgeshire to take a break from their caring role. Because of the popularity of this much needed support Caring Together are now needing the help of more volunteers. Could you help make a difference? The volunteers involved in this project provide company for the person the carers look after so the carer can take a break - whether they want to go for a walk with a friend, go shopping, to an exercise class, to the hairdressers or doing something at home such as gardening or having a friend over for a cup of tea. Things many of us can take relatively for granted. Caring Together’s volunteer coordinator, Annie Gault said, “We know that looking after a family member or friend can be hard and the challenges of the COVID pandemic have made things even harder for carers. The number of people coming forward simply needing some time away from their caring role has shown how valued these carers breaks are." The project covers the East Cambs area including Bottisham, Burwell, Ely, Haddenham, Littleport, Soham and Sutton. Volunteer commitment can be as much or as little as you choose, ideally with a minimum commitment of six months. Full and comprehensive training will be given as well as regular debriefing and on- going support. Find out more at www.caringtogether.org/ help-us-help-others/volunteering/breaksfor-carers-east-cambridgeshire For more info contact:hello@caringtogether.org, / go to caringtogether.org or call 0345 241 0954.

Do you, or someone you know, look after a family member or friend in East Cambridgeshire? We know that carers do an amazing job and that looking after someone can be really rewarding but it can also be really hard at times, especially without a break. We have launched a new project which can provide free short breaks to carers through the support of volunteers. Short break volunteers can provide company for the person being looked after so that carers can take a break and do something they enjoy – such as going for a walk with a friend, going to the hairdressers, an exercise class or doing something else at home such as gardening or spending time with other family members. If you are in East Cambridgeshire and would like to find out more you can contact us on 01480 499090 or email eastcambsproject@caringtogether.org

Biodanza has, especially since lockdown, been gaining recognition all over the globe, for its positive impact on participants’ physical, mental & emotional health - not just to simply help reconnect with our innately joyful nature, but to further explore, in feedback, the everpresent potential for self-healing in-themoment when our growing body awareness lets us feel that we can (re-)act differently / more authentically, in life.
Chatting is discouraged, to give participants time ‘n space to rediscover their own body’s ability to express without words – perhaps finding a common language, with which to affirm timeless human core values. NB We dance barefoot & wear comfy clothes :). (sipping between tracks / while guidance is given). Antibacterial wipes are provided at the start & at the end of each session. £10pp. Once-monthly dates & venue to be confirmed & places will be limited.
Biodanza is gender-free & ageless. Guidance is given, accompanied by a wealth of specificallychosen tracks. No particular aptitude/skills are needed – just the willingness to embark on a holistic adventure of personal development.

Ely Outdoor Sports Association (EOSA) is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers, that provides sporting and social facilities for the community as well as to their member clubs – Ely rugby, hockey and tennis clubs. At the beginning of August a group of 17 traveller caravans broke into one of their rugby pitches and camped on it and next to the tennis courts for three nights. Thankfully, the community response was fantastic with Cambridgeshire Police, East Cambs District Council, the sports clubs and neighbours all working together to protect facilities, and to diffuse any potential flashpoints.
The actions of a 24 hour dog security unit that was employed, kept the travellers calm and contained, and although a lot of rubbish and waste was left there was only a small amount of damage to the tennis court netting and hut. However, not only did EOSA have to suspend all activities, the cost incurred by the travellers in bailiff fees, 24-hour security surveillance, clean-up and repair costs is about £6000 which was not budgeted for. EOSA have several important projects planned this year for which they have been fundraising, including resurfacing the car park. These additional costs caused by the travellers will put them in jeopardy. To help with these costs EOSA have set up a GoFundMe page https://www.gofundme.com/f/ help-with-costs-caused-by-travellers Any contribution - however small - would be greatly appreciated.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE
BASS!
playing after an injury, and that was a fascinating thing to be part of. Of course sometimes students just want to learn to play songs for their own pleasure and their own sense of achievement, and it’s just as much fun working with them too”. “Lots of musicians take on students to supplement their other work but I consider myself primarily a teacher” continues Christopher, who studied education at postgraduate level after his music degree, and earned a PGCE qualification.
Christopher Budd has been performing and recording with his bass guitar for 30 years, and for the last 8 of those he’s been giving lessons in central Ely. In that time he’s worked with a range of students from primary school age to retirees. “The bass seems to attract especially thoughtful musicians who engage with it for a number of reasons” he explains. “Some students decide to study RSL or Trinity grades, some going all the way to Grade 8 and gaining very useful UCAS points, while others might want to improve their technique. I helped one student get back into 36 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Christopher managed to keep classes going through the pandemic, thanks to Zoom, but he is really looking forward to going back to face-toface lessons. "I’m lucky enough to have a nice airy space to teach in that I can ventilate, scrub down, and keep virus-proof. And there’s space for a few new faces!” Christopher is offering a trial class for free, so if you’re a budding bassist get in touch! christopher.budd@gmail.com Tel: 07729 114 173

BERNSTEIN’S BOYS One of the lesser known stories of the Home Front during World War 2 is how Ely and the local area gave shelter to many child refugees brought to England on the Kindertransport. FROM LUCY FRAZER MP I know this year has been very tough for so many people. But it has been great to see how our local communities have pulled together to help those in need. After an immensely successful vaccine rollout we are slowly able to see life return to normal. We have seen that effective vaccines are a vital part of ending the COVID-19 pandemic. Through vaccination, we can stop those most at risk from getting the virus, reduce hospitalisations and see fewer deaths. The vaccine rollout, which is the largest inoculation programme this country has ever launched, has been a truly remarkable achievement. In the spring I had the opportunity to visit Staploe Medical Centre to find out more about how staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly to deliver the rollout in our region. The organisational demands of this challenge have been vast but staff and volunteers have gone above and beyond to ensure everyone who is eligible and wants a vaccine can receive one. I am also running a COVID Community Champions Awards to recognise the efforts of those who have made a contribution during this tough time for our area and country. If you would like to nominate a local individual to thank them for the work they have done across Cambridgeshire then please email me on lucy. frazer.mp@parliament.uk with: • • • •
•
Your name Your address Your email Name and contact email of the individual you are nominating for the COVID Community Champion Award The reasons why you are nominating them
The closing date for nominations is the 30th September. I will be announcing the winners in the autumn and holding a special event in Parliament to recognise their hard work. 40 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Photos: Lucy Frazer's Office Like many people, much of my time has been spent dealing with the virus and its impacts but I have also managed to ensure that work continues with local organisations on local issues. And I wanted to let you know specifically about a few issues I have been dealing with in Ely. Improving healthcare in Ely has always been one of my highest priorities, and I've been working with the local health authorities to increase the range of services at the Princess of Wales hospital. I am supporting plans for a £45 million upgrade, and am pleased that Cambridgeshire Community Services has now secured planning permission for the proposals. This will need funding and I am continuing to make the case to government to make this vision for the Princess of Wales a reality. On a more regional level I am also delighted that last month the government announced further school funding for our area – with an extension of the Fenland and East Cambridgeshire Opportunity Area. The additional £1,158,500 of funding is on top of the additional COVID funding which is being provided across the country. I pressed hard for our area to become an opportunity area. Funding over the last 5 years has helped, amongst other things, to fund mental health training for 1200 school staff, with over 90% of participants reporting increased confidence in their ability to identify the early signs of mental ill health and offer support to those that need it. 45 mental health leads have been established, with 1,300 parents and carers accessing support. Don’t forget if you need help with accessing local services or have a question or a query that I may be able to help with, then please email me on lucy.frazer.mp@parliament.uk. Best Wishes Lucy

COMMUNITY NEWS As the nights drew in we were dancing by the light from street lights! In October we danced our two dances outside the Tourist Office at the much reduced Apple Day.
HELLO FROM LITTLEPORT LIONS!
It’s nice to get back to some sort of normality with less zoom meetings and face to face meeting back at our venue Adams Heritage Centre in Littleport. We have, since restrictions were eased, held meetings in a members garden, suitably distanced of course, a cream tea and a barbecue.
Over the winter we met when we could to keep fit and to keep the dances alive. We have also added further to our repertoire by adapting our existing dances. As things relaxed a little we were able to meet in larger numbers but sadly, though some of our new recruits are still with us and more will rejoin in the coming months, we are a smaller group than in 2019.
We enrolled a new member at our cream tea and we are sure that she will be a great asset to the club with her enthusiasm and drive. Fundraising efforts have been on hold during the pandemic but one of our members decided to give up chocolate and ice cream for a month and raised enough through his sponsorship to pay for a days shift for a specialist nurse at East Anglia Children’s Hospice in Milton. He said that if he decided to do something similar again that he would think it through and only give up one thing and choose only a short month such as February! Come and meet your local Lions at the Soham Pumpkin fair on Saturday 25th September where we will have a 'prize every time' Soft Toy Tombola We are restarting our Breakfast with Santa event at The Almonry in Ely in December.
ELY AND LITTLEPORT RIOT ARE OUT AND ABOUT AND DANCING AGAIN. We had a great time in 2019 with a very successful recruiting drive. By February 2020 our new recruits and existing members were well prepared for a great dancing season. And then came Covid...... We stopped Friday practices a week ahead of the Government lock down and kept in touch via zoom. In August, when the first lock-down eased, we began to meet again outside to practice two new socially distanced dances created by members. We could only have 4 dancers to allow for 2 musicians, 6 people altogether. 42 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
However, things are moving again. We were invited to dance at Ely Folk Festival with two other sides at 3 weeks notice! We made it, just, despite already booked holidays and tonsillitis. It was great but rather weird and constraining to dance up on a stage with our seven strong band on the grass beside us. We danced on the East Lawn, behind the Cathedral at the mini Eel Day. The sun shone on the beautiful setting and there was a really festive atmosphere proving that it is possible to organise such an event in a covid safe way. Well done to the Visit Ely team and all those involved. We also danced next to the Cathedral again on 31st July at the Ely Cathedral Green Fair and then at Denny Abbey on Saturday 7th August. We have also been dancing out at local pubs. These events are the ‘bread and butter’ of the Morris Calendar. Our first Pub dance out was on Friday 23rd July at The Plough, Little Downham, a pub with an excellent Thai restaurant. In September we are booked for a Heritage day event on Saturday 11th and at the Ely Day of Dance on Saturday 18th and then in October for Apple Day on Saturday the 9th. So we have survived three lockdowns! We are getting our fitness back and are looking forward with some optimism to resuming practice this Autumn and a more ‘normal’ dancing season in 2022.
COMMUNITY NEWS If you would like to join us or hire us for an event Further into the Autumn we have an exciting please get in touch. WICKEN FEN NEWS
SOOPA DOOPA SPARTANS
The race, on the 24th of July, was set in the beautiful grounds of Marston Lodge, near Market Harborough and boasted 25 gruelling obstacles over 11km of hilly terrain. A real test of both physical and mental strength - the perfect challenge for raising money for what is such an important charity, now more than ever.
Farewell to MOTHER.... It’s your last chance to see MOTHER... After 2 years in place on Moore’s Drove, the Studio Morison artwork will be decommissioned w/c 27 September, so do take the chance over the next couple of weeks to have a few moments sitting and contemplating in this unique space. There will be a final event on Saturday 25 September to celebrate its time here; tickets available via Wysing Arts Eventbrite.
Jake said, “while we took this on as a bit of fun and a personal challenge to ourselves, we felt it was a great opportunity to raise awareness around mental health, especially so given the damage done over the last 18 months of lockdowns, which has seen a real increase in mental health issues. The more we can get people talking about what’s going on inside, the better everyone will be” The pair, who had initially signed up to the event for 2020, became regular faces at Elys Hive Leisure Centre, where they trained for the last 18months. This certainly proved beneficial on the www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 43
COMMUNITY NEWS day, allowing them to complete all the obstacles without the dreaded 30 burpee forfeit, which is implemented if a participant doesn’t complete a specific obstacle. The pair enjoyed the challenge that much, they now have their sights set on their next one “The Wolf Run” in September and will be reappearing in next year’s Spartan event too. So far Jake and George have raised over £3,300 for MIND and would like to thank each and every donor. They would also like to say a special thanks to their shirt sponsors - Brewers Decorator Centres, The Cambridge Joiner, Soopa Doopa, Burnt Orange Creative, Business Growth Coaches Network and Squeeze Football. The lads pictured were kitted out by Soopa Doopa so could be easily spotted in their electric green tops. Back in July, the East Cambridgeshire Schools’ Art Exhibition opened at Babylon Gallery. The prize winners were announced from each of the six Key Stages, in an online awards ceremony, with work from children aged 4 to 19 years. COMMUNITY NEWS
Ely College staff have been working together to create their first school audiobook, now available via the College Youtube channel!
NSPCC FUNDRAISING
Head of English, Heather Clark-Hope explained the reasons why the staff wanted to work together to create the book: ‘After the tough year the students have had, dealing with everything that has come with the pandemic, we wanted to give the students their own audiobook to enjoy during the summer term and over the holidays. We chose the novel ‘Treasure Island’ by Robert Louis Stevenson.’ ‘Year 9 students particularly enjoyed reading some extracts from this novel in their Victorian Genre module earlier in the year and wanted to hear more from this swashbuckling adventure. All the staff involved have enjoyed reading this classic text.’ Teachers from different departments around the school have worked together to record episodes of the audiobook. In fact, so many staff have volunteered to read for the students that the college’s second audiobook ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ by Sir Arthur Conon Doyle is already in production for the new academic year. The audiobook is available to listen via Ely College’s Youtube channel via this link: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhjnGc2Mx1M
The Annual NSPCC Summer Supper went ahead incorporating all the restrictions of Covid regulations and social distancing. The Ely and District NSPCC Fundraising Team are happy to announce that a profit of £1247 was made. Thanks go out to Waitrose, Tesco, Gees and Harnwells who all supported this event. The small team of volunteers were joined by six young people who provided a waitress and waiter service. There were also five primary aged youngsters who ran the raffle and can be seen here counting up the profits. It goes to show you are never too young to volunteer and especially for a charity like the NSPCC that always put children first. Our next fundraising events will be a Willow Weaving Workshop at a date to be confirmed and we are taking bookings now. We are also holding another Plant Stall at 37 Downham Road on week beginning September 24th. For further details please ring Johanna on 07912617135 or Wendy on 01353 664752. The report, issued this week, states that in 2019, England’s 42 Anglican cathedrals contributed £235m to their local economies. They provided 6,065 jobs full time equivalent jobs and volunteering posts for 15,400 people who gave 906,000 hours of their time. Collectively, they welcomed more than 14.6 million visits, 308,000 by schoolchildren for educational events, and 9.5m from tourists. In the same year, England’s Cathedrals hosted a rich programme of arts, music, heritage and culture – amounting to 9,580 events equivalent to two every three days – as well as providing the venues for film shoots such as The Crown, Doctor Who and Avengers:Endgame.
The report also emphasises the roles Cathedral play socially, responding to local need by running foodbanks, support groups for the more vulnerable, the unemployed, the homeless, outreach activities in schools, residential homes and hospitals, parent and toddler groups, and community cafes. Over two thirds of cathedrals are part of the A Rocha Eco Church programme, including Ely who achieved their Silver status, towards helping the Church of England achieve its carbon reduction targets by 2030.

REVEALS CATHEDRALS’ CONOMIES AND COMMUNITIES. In 2019 Ely Cathedral welcomed over 200,000 visitors, 9000 school children. The building also provided a venue for over 40 concerts and recitals, hosted an original Banksy, put on a month long Science Festival which included the spectacular installation of Luke Jerram’s Moon, accommodated a special exhibition by The Embroiders’ Guild and accommodated several TV crews including Salvage Hunters. The Very Revd Mark Bonney, Dean of Ely said “We whole heartedly welcome this report which highlights the relevance of Cathedrals, both as places of worship and reflection, in addition to their role within the community. We all have a responsibility to support the social and economic progress in our regions, but that can be hard to measure. It is encouraging that the data shows the meaningful contribution Cathedrals make, and how much we have all evolved since the last report in 2014". The report also collected evidence on the impact of COVID-19 - which saw Government mandated closures and restrictions on gatherings - reveals visitor numbers slumped by 75 per cent compared to 2019, visitor spend was down proportionately, and over 70 per cent of cathedral staff were furloughed. The research continues, stating that the fall in visitor numbers has had a significant effect on cathedrals’ income levels, particularly those cathedrals more dependent on the visitor economy. It also found a significant fall in cathedrals’ average non-visitor income, driven by a reduction of almost 80% in income generated from the use of cathedral facilities. Closure and restrictions on congregation size also meant fewer people attended services in the cathedral leading, inevitably, to a drop in congregational giving. On the positive side, the research also found that COVID-19 had given rise to new pastoral and creative opportunities. While 75 percent of cathedrals’ existing social projects stopped due to closures and restrictions, new services like social support groups developed. In addition Cathedral’s welcomed the opportunity to live stream services online and each Cathedral, on average, provided two Sunday services and six midweek services. Ely fully embraced digital worship which resulted in a congregation that more than quadrupled by accumulating an online worshipping community from people all over the world.
