...from the EDITORS

WELCOME

Hello, It’s great to be back with another issue of the magazine after our break. Mayor, Richard Hobbs tells us about a few of the things he has got up to over the summer and we had a wealth of editorial to choose from this month so I hope you enjoy reading about the good causes and initiatives going on in the area. There is also a short message from elected MP, Lucy Fraser on page 28. We have so much fantastic support now from local businesses that we have decided to get a bit more organised and start arranging the magazine into sections. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m hoping it will make it even easier for you to find and contact the business you are looking for. Events-wise September is very busy with Topping Booksellers bringing a plethora of celebrities to the city during the Autumn as part of their Literary Festival. Hereward Rotary are putting on another fun night of nostalgic music and dance with a Bee Gee Night at the Maltings….just don’t forget those skin-tight jeans! See page 36 for a full list of films at Ely Maltings Cinema too. It can be a mixture of sadness and relief at the end of the holidays when the children go back to school but there is something to cheer us up on page 41…oh no there isn’t…oh yes there is! (groan…) KD theatre have already started planning and casting the Ely Professional Panto which begins on 22nd Dec and carries through to January. Please keep all your info coming in for the groups and meets and any special events you would like to publicise and if you are a new business in Ely do get in touch with Madeleine. She has some great advertising offers to take us through the Autumn. best wishes

RICHARD HOBBS MAYOR OF ELY What a varied time we have had recently meeting a wide age range of people: visits to schools, attending a drum -service with the Old Comrades plus a crazy day at Aquafest. St Mary’s and Spring Meadow schools joined together for the first time for their school summer fayre - a joint venture everyone hopes will continue with the future growth of Ely North. We took our son and his family along. Our granddaughter, Jasmin, starts at Spring Meadow in September.

to provide this annual free entertainment and ensuring good weather. It is always a highlight of the year to welcome Old Cambridgeshire Comrades of the Anglian Regiment. Their recent drum-head service on Cross Green gave an opportunity for local residents and visitors to be involved in this service and show their appreciation of the sacrifices made by The Cambridgeshires. The City is very proud to have ties with this Regiment. The British Legion riders met at Ely Cemetery to commemorate the Anniversary of the death of Private John Cook. A very moving Service. Our visit to KDs Production of “Hairspray” was wonderful, and Vivas recent production of “Dreaming” was a well executed, unique interpretation of a Midsummer Night’s Dream. The enthusiasm and talent of the all the cast, young and old, made for an enjoyable experience. Regards Richard Hobbs

I returned to St Marys for their potato competition, organised by Mr and Mrs Holden, to the children and staff responded enthusiastically. The winner of the heaviest potato was announced, and the children now realise that potatoes don’t just come from the supermarket. After the success of this trial I hope other schools might become involved in any future competition. It was a personal pleasure for me to be invited to the 25th Anniversary of the Opening of St John’s School and meeting old colleagues from the time I was Chair of Governors. How wonderful to hear their Anniversary Song. I am still humming it. Arrived in style to Aquafest by Tuk-Tuk, an experience that everyone should enjoy! Congratulations to the Rotary clubs for continuing 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

We passed a milestone in June: Form the Future was two years old! It's a great time to reflect on how much has changed: we've grown from the two co-founders to a team of 10 - and are recruiting. We've increased our network of employers who support our work with young people to over 1,000. During that time we've given over 30,000 young people the chance to work with employers, all of them having the four or more encounters with employers that the evidence says makes it more likely they'll be employed or in higher education at age 19. There's a huge need for the work we do. We're lucky to have secured contracts that fund us to deliver most of what we do free of charge to schools and developed a network of brilliant business supporters who give their time so generously.

In the last academic year we connected over 10,000 students with employers to expand their horizons and improve their skills. We can only do this with the support of the business community and commitment from schools and colleges. Form the Future supports careers education by linking schools with local businesses to get young people ready for work. Many businesses want to plug their skills gap by working with schools. But they struggle to get past Reception. We make it easy for business to make a difference. Since the end of a funded careers service, much of the information students get about careers is provided by non-specialist school staff. Parents, peers and teachers are sources of influence, too, but this advice can be based on out of date attitudes or reinforce patterns of underachievement. If you can help, please look at the events on our website and contact us. We would be delighted to have your support.

INSPIRING STUDENTS BY CONNECTING SCHOOLS & BUSINESSES.

We look forward to deepening our relationship with our business partners and expanding our support to schools in the coming years.

PETE AND BEST MATE, NICK DO THE GREAT NORTH RUN IN MEMORY OF DIANE WOOD Ely resident Pete Wood is in training to attempt to set a new Guinness World Record at the Great North Run in Newcastle on the 10th of September this year. Pete and his best mate, Nick, will be dressing as Mario and Luigi (from the Super Mario Bros video game) and attempting to set the record for fastest half marathon dressed as a video game character (male). To be recognised as an official Guinness World Record they need to finish the 13.1 mile run in less than 1 hour 35 minutes - a fairly tough challenge in fancy dress. All of this is to raise money for Myeloma UK in memory of his mother, Diane Wood, who sadly passed away in April this year after a courageous seven year battle with Myeloma. Myeloma is a bone cancer that can be treated, but currently has no cure. It is also has one of the highest rates of delay in diagnosis and delayed diagnosis has a major affect on the effectiveness of treatment. 22 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

The charity Myeloma UK does a fantastic job in supporting patients, raising awareness and driving forward research on the disease.

You can follow Pete's training and fundraising on Twitter at @Mario4MyelomaUK and if you'd like to support his attempt, please consider a small donation here: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/diane-wood-1

Cancer Appeal t is launched today in support of breast cancer www.foothealthy.uk patients at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The appeal, organised by Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), asks people to host a party for family, friends, work colleagues or fellow students this October to help raise money to transform care for patients. Party suggestions include getting together for tea and cake, a prosecco party, office party or even a summer ‘BooBieQ’. Former breast cancer patient and Ely resident, Ruth New is fronting the campaign by asking others to get involved to support future patients like her. Ruth was diagnosed with Grade 3 breast cancer shortly after the birth of her first son, Alexander. She had a mastectomy the day after her 30th birthday, and today, ten years on, she is celebrating reaching her 40th birthday by fundraising for the Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal.

Ruth said: “Without the support, care and understanding of the amazing breast care team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, I never would have thought having my second child William would be possible. I want to say thank you by raising funds to support future patients like me.” Every penny raised through the appeal will help Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust support thousands of inspirational women and men. Over the years money has helped renovate quiet rooms, buy specialist ultrasound scanners, support cuttingedge research facilities and launch a research programme to help make treatment more targeted and effective. Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal party hosts will receive a party pack including balloons, banners and invitations. To order your Appeal party pack or for details on any other events go to: www.act4addenbrookes.org.uk/ABCappeal, call 01223 217757 or email fundraising@ act4addenbrookes.org.uk.

AND IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH!...Family New are walking the full length of the North Norfolk Coast Path (approximately 45 to 50 miles) over October Half Term finishing on Ruth’s birthday. This is a family challenge, Mummy (Ruth), Daddy (Richard), William (age 4) and Alexander (age 10 by the time they do the walk) will be with us every step of the way. LUCY FRASER M.P. Not many people expected a general election after just 2 years, least of all me! But that’s what happened, and I am delighted to have been re-elected as your MP for a second time. It’s been extremely busy since the election in June. Most recently I attended a meeting I called of key stakeholders (including the district councils, County Council, Greater Cambridge Partnership) to discuss upgrading the A10 and the progress of a station in Soham. These are long term projects which I continue to push. I have highlighted issues in Westminster that have been raised with me by doctors at Addenbrooke’s and I am meeting the Chair of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group next week to talk about the pilot project at the Princess of Wales. I continue to work to help our schools – initiating a meeting across the constituency for teaching staff to talk about teacher recruitment. This initiative was supported by primary and secondary schools and representatives from seven Ely schools took part. These meetings were the beginning of a consultation with the Department of Education which I hope will inform future action in this area. And I have many opportunities to continue Wehad alsososupply and We fit: also supply and fit: to support the fabulous entertainments on offer

locally – from the fabulous David Hockney exhibition at Babylon Arts, to the brilliant Viva production of ‘Dreaming’. I am honoured to be able to represent you again and if you have any issues you wish to raise with me please email me on:

GIFTS & SPECIAL OCCASIONS

We discovered what Ely Christians Against Poverty (CAP) has to offer CB6 and CB7 residents, by interviewing their Debt Centre Manager John Hociej Tell us how you got involved with CAP My first experience was a CAP money course. I commuted to London, had a growing family and was finding it difficult to budget. So, I went to the money course and learnt how to budget. It taught me things I was surprised I didn’t know, and it made me review how I thought about money and what I did with it. What does the CAP course involve? The CAP Money Course is a three-week course, with a week off in the middle. It starts with a lowkey introduction and then talks about building a budget which, if you’ve never done it before, is a very good thing to do. They have helpful illustrations that enable you to see what you need to put in a budget, how you construct it, how you do the maths and then encourage you to live by cash so that you know how much you can spend each week. Next month John will tell us about the new Ely CAP debt centre which opened in April. Ely CAP are running a student money course on Tuesday 5 September 7.30pm - 9.45pm at St Mary’s Church, Ely and an adult money course on 25th September, 2nd and 16th October from 7.309.30pm at the Countess Free Church. see page 45 E-mail elycap@stmarysely.org to book a place or go to www.capuk.org. A RARE CHANCE TO HEAR WORLD RENOWNED CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER PERFORM IN ELY Australian-born guitarist Craig Ogden is one of the most exciting classical guitar players of his generation. His albums frequently top the UK Classical Chart and composers are lining up to write music especially for him. On Saturday 30th September 2017, he will join Ely Sinfonia in Ely Cathedral to play what is arguably the most famous guitar concerto of all time, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. Inspired by the gardens at Philip II’s spring palace, the Palacio Real de Aranjuez, this exquisite piece evokes the sounds of nature to transport the listener to another place and time. The exciting programme also includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol and Danzon no.2, a delightful little piece by the Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, and finishes with Beethoven’s virtuoso Symphony no.2. The concert will start at 7.30pm and tickets cost £25, £20 or £15 (reserved) or £8.50 (unreserved), Concessions cost £15 in £20 seats. HELP A FAMILY MAKE PRECIOUS MEMORIES BY VOLUNTEERING WITH EACH Caring for a child with complex needs or a serious illness can be physically and emotionally draining. It also takes a lot of time, which for families at East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is often more precious than anything. That is why the charity is appealing for volunteers, as part of its new EACH Help at Home Service, to support families in their home environment. Whether you could spend a couple of hours a week or even an hour a month doing some cleaning, washing and ironing, or perhaps a little bit of gardening, the good cause wants to hear from you. EACH Help at Home has been supporting families in other parts of the region since last summer. One family to have benefited from the service are the Maudes who live in Colchester. Karen and Justin, who have two sons and a daughter Cara, have received weekly visits of two-and-a-half to three hours from Clare Kendrick Robinson. Cara has a rare metabolic condition that means she can’t break down fat and having too much in her diet would be poisonous for her. Karen said: “EACH Help at Home has been a huge help to our family, especially me. For any mother-of-three life is a juggle, but when one of your children is medically complex and has been a patient at Great Ormond Street Hospital over a long period there are many more demands on your time. “I have spent so much time in London looking after my daughter. Knowing that someone would come in weekly to clean for a few hours took one worry away and allowed me more time to focus on my other children when I got home. It also took the pressure off my mother who wanted to help

me and kept our house functioning when I was going to London. The service has provided a lifeline for our family and we are very grateful to Clare and EACH.” Clare from Wivenhoe, was an education professional working with children with additional needs until she retired three years ago. She went on to become involved with a film club and an arts centre but wanted to once again do something to help others in challenging circumstances. She said: “I was aware when I started work with the family that it would be really useful for them to know the work I do would get done regularly - but what I really hadn't realised was just how rewarding it would prove to be for me. EACH is now rolling out its new service to support families in Cambridgeshire and West Essex, and Volunteer Co-ordinator Agnes Toth is on the hunt for volunteers. She said: “We have over 100 children receiving care and support from our hospice based in Milton, so there are lots of families who could benefit from the generosity of a volunteer.“ Agnes is holding an information session for anyone interested to find out more about EACH Help at Home volunteering roles on Thursday 7th September between 6pm and 7pm at EACH’s hospice off Church Lane in Milton. If you would like to attend the session or to find out more, please contact Agnes on 07889 251385 or by emailing agnes.toth@each.org.uk. Royal Patron Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge. For more information about EACH, including forthcoming events and how you can help raise funds, visit www.each.org.uk or call the Cambridgeshire fundraising office on 01223 205180. A TALE OF MYSTERY AND INTRIGUE BY LOCAL AUTHOR John Taylor was born at the Grange in Ely and grew up in Littleport, so he’s a true local and proud to be a Fen Tiger. He blames his adventurous spirit for him holding the record for the largest number of times a boy was caned at his school. He is a qualified draughtsman and had a successful career in international business management. Yet he never forgets his roots, as seen in his latest book “I Will Find You,” where significant parts feature Ely, Mepal, The Fens and Cambridge. John’s sensitivity towards children and indigenous people becomes clear in this latest work. Where a young boy grows up without love and later searches for his mother. The story, in part, describes the misfortunes and strengths of English Child Migrants. John is quick to add that it forms only part of the story but the reader needs to know about it. This work was started seven years ago, but after talking with ex-child migrants

in Australia John stopped writing for two years, finding the subject too disturbing. It is clear that a huge amount of research was undertaken to produce the authenticity of this work, with surprising in-depth cultural understanding, especially Aboriginal. He has been asked if it’s a true story. John will tell you that it’s fictional, based on facts, real people and events, some you may recognise. “I Will Find You” is described as funny, sad and filled with drama, gripping compelling, and one of those books you can’t put down until after the epilogue. Copies can be found at Burrow Book Shop and on Amazon where it is also avaliable for Kindle.

John, the Author aged about 8

John has kindly given us a signed copy to give away so please head over to the Elyi Facebook Page and give us a comment to be entered for the draw on 10/9/17.

Around this time of year KD will be putting the finishing touches to the script and song choices, the costumes will be being made and the set finished painting (all the sets and costumes are brand new each year.)

It may be time to go back to school, however KD Theatre Productions are full steam ahead preparing for this year’s professional pantomime ‘Beauty and the Beast’ which opens at The Maltings on the 22nd December running through to the 14th January 2018. It’s Christmas all year round for us’ says Daniel who is one half of KD Theatre Productions along side his business partner and life long friend Katherine Hickmott. ‘This will be our 5th year and we couldn’t be more proud of how far the pantomime has come and thankful for all the support we’ve had.’ KD Theatre Productions start planning the following years pantomime before the current one has even opened. They already know the title they will be presenting in 2018 and 2019. ‘You have to always think ahead. We also have pantomimes in Cheshire and Huntingdon so we have to be super organised’ said Katherine Hickmott.

Casting takes place in June/July in London. Ely audiences will be pleased to know that the hilarious ‘Terry Gauci’ will be returning as the Dame again. Terry is a favourite amongst the audiences with his funny one-liners and outrageous costumes. What makes the Ely pantomime even more special is KD Theatre Productions is a home grown company. Katherine & Daniel started KD when they were at School putting on pantomimes and cabarets. They both went onto study Musical Theatre in London whilst developing their company into the professional theatre company it is today. As well as the Theatre Company they are very hands on with their Children’s Performing Arts School ‘KD Academy’ which offers classes in both Soham and Ely. The pantomime runs for just short of 4 weeks and tickets for most performances usually sell out well in advance, so it is advised to book up early! To book tickets call the Box Office onJ44 or book online at www. kdtheatre.co.uk. To find out more about KD visit their websites kdtheatre.co.uk and kdacademy.co.uk.

REVIEW: THE DREAMING THE HAYWARD THEATRE, ELY, THURSDAY 3RD AUGUST 2017 & THE EDINBURGH FRINGE 8TH - 12TH AUGUST 2017 Inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, the production of ‘The Dreaming’ presented in the Hayward Theatre last week was amazing. The logistics of combining two of the most renowned theatre groups in the area, Viva and King’s Ely, must have been challenging enough, but creating successfully such a believable world of fantasy and reality with stage limitations in preparation for appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe, took sheer genius. Director Jeremy James Taylor, founder of The National Youth Music Theatre, is indeed a weaver of magic. With producers Dan Schumann (Viva) and Nick Huntington (King’s Ely) the show transported us into a world of contrasts, from the genteel superficiality of the well-to do, hilarious light-hearted comedy, to manic mayhem and sinister undertones that foretold the brutality and cruelty of the First World War with the loss of the lives of so many young men, men who were never to have the children of the next generation. This was no ‘youth production’. It was first class theatre. The acting, singing, dancing and orchestral accompaniments were superb. The magic of this show was no frivolous affair, but a robust, potent, primeval stabbing into the darkness of the unknown. Fantastic choreography (by Jessica Clifford and Chris Cuming) and clever stage direction moved the drama from scene to scene in a continuous, energetic flow, shifting seamlessly from poignant solo to the astounding, often frenzied,

actions of the Boy and Girl Woodlanders. Key characters stood out, their respective personality traits strongly and credibly displayed. The confident Jack, a blacksmith’s boy (Corbin Abassi) played a pivotal part in the typical Shakespearian-type mistaken identity and resulting comedy. Hilarious scenes of lovers and unrequited lovers in battle, the bunch of simple local folks endeavouring to put on a first class play of their own but not necessarily succeeding, and a touch of fervent patriotism with St George and the Dragon effortlessly fell into place, only possible because of such a sustained high standard of direction, performance and skilled team support. So with this success behind them the cast and crew rode off up to stage acclaimed performances at the Edinburgh Fringe. Mary Durkkacz caught the show north of the border and was suitably impressed writing in the Edinburgh Reporter, ”The songs are melodious and evocative. The characters are beautifully portrayed. The play has a fabulous energy and there is just a tinge of sadness as the company greets the sunrise and the woodlanders head back to the forest to a world which will never be the same again. A superb ***** production.” Praise indeed for two fine local drama groups! A worthwhile and inspiring collaboration. with thanks to Rosemary Westwell for original review text and to Konrad Bartelski for photos

ANY OLD WOOL? Littleport & Ely Timebank are appealing for unwanted wool as part of a campaign to provide Christmas Care packages to socially isolated elderly members of the community. The wool will be used by Timebank volunteers to create handmade gifts including lap blankets and "fiddle muffs" to benefit those with conditions such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's. The Timebank are looking to the community to see if they can provide unwanted wool which might be lurking in the back of a cupboard so that they can knit approximately 100 of these items to distribute to agencies and care homes in the local community to those who would benefit from it. Sigma Embroidery in Littleport High street, Cutlacks (in the paint and linen department) on Fore Hill and Re-Imagine Resource Centre (from early Sept) at Witchford Recycling Centre have kindly volunteered to be drop off points over the coming months which is fantastic! If you think you could help knit a fiddle muff or crochet squares, or would like to find out more about Littleport & Ely Timebank, please contact Caline on caline.easey@chsgroup.org.uk or call 07702517746. 50 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
