Most people wear new clothes, while biscuits, cakes, pies and tarts are presented to visitors as treats. After Ramadan, the month of fasting has come the Eid-ulFitr for the Muslims all over the world. People left the capital city as well as other the divisional headquarters for their village homes to reunite with near and dear ones and join in the festivities of Eid together. This is the day when the Muslims reward t h e m s e l ve s f o r h av i n g

MELA

A

festival or gala is an event ordinarily staged by a local community, which centers on and celebrates some unique aspect of that community and the Festival. Among many religions, a feast is a set of celebrations , a feast and a festival are historically interchangeable. When used as in the meaning of a festival, most often refers to a religious festival rather than a film or art

festival. In the Philippines and many other former Spanish colonies, the Spanish word fiesta is used to denote a communal religious feast. Festivals, of many types, serve to meet specific needs, as well as to provide entertainment. Modern festivals that focus on cultural or ethnic topics seek to inform members of their traditions.

MARS MAY THE NEXT LIVING PLACE FOR HUMANS

U

ntil the first successful Mars flyby in 1965 by Mariner 4, many speculated about the presence of liquid water on the planet's surface. This was based on observed periodic variations in light and dark patches,

particularly in the polar latitudes, which appeared to be seas and continents, long d a r k s t r i a t i o n s we re interpreted by some as irrigation channels for liquid water. Until the first successful Mars flyby in 1965 by Mariner 4, many

48

speculated about the presence of liquid water on the planet's surface. This was based on observed periodic variations in light and dark patches, particularly in the polar latitudes, which appeared to be seas and

continents, long dark striations were interpreted by some as irrigation channels for liquid water. Today, it is accepted that Mars had abundant water very early in its history.Today, all large areas o f l i q u i d w a t e r h ave disappeared. A fraction of this water is however retained on modern Mars as both ice and locked into the structure of abundant w a t e r- r i c h m a t e r i a l s , including clays and sulphates Despite this, olivine is widespread on Mars, which readily weathers to iddingsite in the presence of water. Iddingsite is observed

49

on Mars, confirming that water has been present at times, and this might enable scientists to determine when there was last liquid water on the planet. However the abundance of olivine alongside it demonstrates that Mars' surface has not been pervasively altered by water. Studies of hydrogen isotopic ratios indicate that asteroids and comets from beyond 2.5 AU provide the

source of Mars' water, which currently totals 6% to 27% of the Earth's present ocean. Since several missions Mars Odyssey, Mars Global S u r ve yo r, M a r s Reconnaissance Orbiter, M a r s E x p r e s s , O p p o r t u n i t y rove r a n d Curiosityrover are still sending back data from Mars, discoveries continue to be made. Curiosity rover has made another significant discovery – an indication of water presence on Mars. The rover found clay minerals when it drilled into a Martian rock. Curiosity project scientist, John Grotzinger said, “We have found a habitable environment that is so benign and supportive of life that, if this water had been

50

around and you had been on the planet, you would have been able to drink it.” The discovery reveals that Mars could have supported living microbes in past. The rover gathered powder from the rock which contains sulfur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and carbon giving us an assumption of life on Mars. Principal investigator for Curiosity's CheMin instrument, David Blake said, “I think this is probably the only definitively habitable environment [outside of Earth] that we have described and recorded.” The powder sample is analyzed by two on-board laboratories – Sam and Chemin. There is 20-30% smectite in the powder sample. They are highly abundant and low salt level. This all suggests a fresh-

water environment on Mars. Grotzinger says, “We have characterized a very ancient, but strangely new 'gray Mars' where conditions once were favourable for life.” Mars can easily be seen from Earth with the naked eye, as can its reddish coloring. Its apparent magnitude reaches - 3.0, which is surpassed only by Jupiter,Venus, the Moon, and the Sun. Optical ground-based telescopes are typically limited to resolving features about 300 km (186 miles) across when Earth and Mars are closest because of Earth's atmosphere

THE MOST RESPECTABLE PERSONALITY QUAID-E-AZAM

M ALI JINNAH

Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad All Jinnah was a great leader. The cherished dream of a separate homeland for the Muslims of the Indo-Pak sub-continent was fulfilled under his inspiring l e a d e r s h i p. H e wo r ke d extraordinarily hard for the cause of the Muslims and the reward of the continued

struggle came in the form of the creation of Pakistan on August 14, 1947. Quaid-e-Azam and his team of dedicated workers had given enormous sacrifices for achieving their cherished goal. Pakistan had not come into being by mere chance or fluke. It had needed sacrifices

78

of all sorts from the Muslims who stood firm and united under the dynamic leadership of Quaid-e-Azam. Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah's achievement as the founder of Pakistan and the father of the nation , dominates everything else he did in his long and crowded public life spanning some 42 years. Yet, by any standard, his was an eventful

life, his personality multidimensional and his achievements in other fields were many, if not equally great. Indeed, several were the roles he had played with distinction at one time or another, he was one of the greatest legal luminaries India had produced during the first half of the century, an `ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity, a great constitutionalist, a distinguished parliamentarian, a top-notch politician, an indefatigable freedom-fighter, a dynamic Muslim leader, a political strategist and, above all one of the great nation-builders of modern times. What, however, makes him so remarkable is the fact that while similar other leaders assumed the leadership of traditionally well-defined nations and espoused their cause, or led

79

them to freedom, he created a nation out of an inchoate and downtrodeen minority and established a cultural and national home for it. And all that within a decase. For over three decades before the successful culmination in 1947, of the Muslim struggle for freedom in the South-Asian subcontinent, Jinnah had provided political leadership to the Indian Muslims initially as one of the leaders, but later, since 1947, as the only prominent leader- the Quaide-Azam. For over thirty years, he had guided their affairs, he had given expression, coherence and direction to their ligitimate aspirations and cherished dreams; he had formulated these into

concerete demands; and, above all, he had striven all the while to get them conceded by both the ruling British and the numerous Hindus the dominant segment of India's population. And for over thirty years he had fought, relentlessly and inexorably, for the inherent rights of the

80

Muslims for an honourable existence in the subcontinent. Pakistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is a sovereign country in South Asia. With a population exceeding 180 million people, it is the sixth most populous country in the world. Located at the crossroads of the strategically important regions of South Asia, Central Asia and Western Asia, Pakistan has a 1,046kilometre coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman in the south and is bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan to the west and north, Iran to the southwest and China in the far northeast. It is separated f r o m Ta j i k i s t a n b y

Afghanistan's narrow Wakhan Corridor in the north, and also shares a marine border with Oman. The name Pakistan literally means "Land of the Pure" in Urdu and Persian. It was coined in 1933 as Pakistan by Choudhary Rahmat Ali, a Pakistan Movement activist, who published it in his pamphlet Now or Never, using it as an acronym ("thirty million Muslim

81

brethren who live in PAKISTAN") referring to the names of the five northern regions of the British Raj Punjab, North-West Frontier Province (Afghania Province), Kashmir, Sindh, and Baluchistan". The letter i was incorporated to ease pronunciation and form the linguistically correct and meaningful name. The nation of Pakistan is independent just because of the great leader Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Born in Karachi 25 december 1876, and trained as a barrister at Lincoln's Inn in London, Jinnah rose to prominence in the Indian National Congress in the first two decades of the 20th century. In these early years of his political career, Jinnah advocated Hindu–Muslim

unity, helping to shape the 1916 Lucknow Pact between the Congress and the All-India Muslim League, a party in which Jinnah had also become prominent. Jinnah became a key leader in the All India Home Rule League, and proposed afourteen-point constitutional reform plan to safeguard the political rights of Muslims should a united British India become independent. In 1920, however, Jinnah

82

Congress when it agreed to follow a campaign of satyagraha, or non-violent resistance, advocated by the influential leader, Mohandas Gandhi. By 1940, Jinnah had come to believe that Indian Muslims should have their own state. In that year, the Muslim League, led by Jinnah, passed the Lahore Resolution, demanding a separate nation. During the Second World War, the League gained strength while leaders of the Congress were imprisoned, and in the elections held shortly after the war, it won most of the seats reserved for Muslims. Ultimately, the Congress and the Muslim League could not reach a power-sharing formula for a

united India, leading all parties to agree to separate independence for a predominately Hindu India, and for a Muslimmajority state, to be called P a k i s t a n .

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's worldwide blockbuster Despicable Me entertained audiences around the globe in 2010, grossing more than $540 million and becoming the 10th-biggest animated motion picture in U.S. history. In summer 2013, get ready for more Minion madness in Despicable Me 2. Just as enjoyable, if not more than the earlier film, 'Despicable Me 2' sees reformed super-villain Gru (Steve Carell) adjusting nicely to fatherhood and domesticity after adopting three adorable orphan girls in the last film. Having given up his crooked ways, he's working towards setting up a jam-and-jellies business, when he's reluctantly persuaded by the Anti-Villain League to team up with goofy secret agent Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig).

104

Alternately funny and heartfelt, the new film nicely juggles themes of family and companionship with a neverending stream of gags mostly involving Gru's loyal helpers, those yellow gibberishspeaking, goggle-eyed Minions who're crucial to the plot this time around. There's nothing wildly

original here in terms of set ups or plot points, but Carell and Wiig have a winning chemistry, and the Minions like the penguins in the 'Madagascar' movies, and Scrat in the 'Ice Age' films steal the film from right under the nose of its protagonists. Directors Pierre Coffin and Chris

105

Renaud unapologetically let the gags take precedence over the perfunctory plot, and package all of it in decently done 3D. I'm going with three-and-ahalf out of five for 'Despicable Me 2'. Wait for the end credits, there's a hilarious little sequence that tells us a spin-off movie starring the Minions is on its way.

Music album is above average with some standout tracks, writes Joginder Tuteja. The ferocious beats coupled with some highly energetic singing by Vishal Dadlani and Hamsika Iyer are reason enough to enjoy this number strongly reminiscent of popualr 1980s tracks from South Indian films.
