... the magazine for the industry, about the industry, by the industry

SOMETIMES the old ideas are the best… Paperchase posted an 11.2% increase in sales for the five weeks up to 27 December as demand surged for its Christmas cards. All told, it shifted nine million units. Well, you’d expect chief executive Timothy Melgund to say: “Reports of the death of Christmas cards are grossly exaggerated.” But his next sentence is interesting. “There’s an anti-technology theme playing its part…You can show you care so much more with a card than an email.” Indeed, how much more likely are you to browse a supplier’s brochure or peruse an advert in glossy print than plough through a website or wrestle with an emailed link? And who can resist picking up and opening that card or letter that falls onto the doormat? We’re very proud of ETN’s weekly and apparently very popular e-newsletter. But even prouder that our magazine remains in tangible, permanent print. WHAT did you do about Christmas opening and closing? It’s worth a thought with a view to planning for this year’s festivities. Like many horse owners, I had a bit more time on my hands between 24 December and re-starting work in the New Year, so indulged in some shopping. Or at least I tried to… It’s understandable that ‘proper shops’ are closed on certain days. And provided it’s made clear to customers, who may be wise to phone before visiting, that’s fine. But when it came to websites, my optimism for 24/7 consumerism was well and truly dashed. Of course delivery will be slightly slower over this period – but please tell shoppers by how much before they fill their baskets. And please don’t advertise “call now for advice” when there’s no-one answering the phone for a week. Even worse, please don’t place a message on your answerphone saying “we re-open on 2 January” which is still playing at 9.30am on Monday, 4 January. Communication is key.

Helmet manufacturer secures research funding CHARLES Owen has won £165,000 to work with Cardiff University to develop new materials for protective headgear. The funding has come from four American bodies; the National Football League (NFL), sports clothing company Under Armour, General Electric (GE) and the US Department of Commerce’s National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST). Roy Burek, CEO of riding helmet manufacturer Charles Owen, is helping develop a novel material created by researchers from Cardiff University’s School of Engineering. The aim is to improve the safety of athletes, the military and others from brain injuries by better absorbing and dissipating impact. "I’m so excited that the NFL has recognised our expertise and place in helping to reduce brain injury,” said Roy. “It is through these special collaborations that we can develop the next generation of head protection.” Charles Owen became involved with the initiative after being named one of four finalists in a section of the Head Health Challenge in the US. The £165,000 funding is the Wrexham based company’s prize money. The multi-layered, elastic material that’s being developed is called C3. Using mathematical modelling and computer testing, it can be tailored for specific impact scenarios. This allows researchers to test various designs before building the material with a 3D printer - a more efficient and cost-effective method than using traditional techniques. During the 3D printing process, a polymer-based powder is fused into a specific shape by a laser, which solidifies the material to form a strong, flexible structure. Structures can be designed in such a way that impact energy can be dissipated relatively easily, making it an ideal material to use in protective clothing and accessories. The Head Health Initiative includes a four-year, £710,000 research and development programme funded by the NFL and GE. The various prizewinners from Challenge III [the section in which Charles Owen is a finalist] will have their efforts judged in a year’s time by a review panel. The most promising technology will receive another £352,775 to fund further work.

GRAND OPENING: Paralympic dressage rider Ricky Balshaw was the guest of honour when a Staffordshire saddlery officially opened its expanded store. The new look Hoofs at Heart - sited in the Heart of the Country Shopping Village, Swinfen near Lichfield - is three times bigger than the old shop. “Ricky was wonderful and spent most of the day with us meeting customers,” said director Karren Rawlins, who is pictured with Ricky. A raffle was held to raise money for the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA).

GENTLE GIANTS: The world’s largest gathering of Shire horses takes place at the Staffordshire County Showground next month (18 – 20 March). The Shire Horse Society’s National Show is expected to attract around 200 entries from across Europe. As well as in-hand classes, dressage and concours d’elegance competitions will showcase the grace and elegance of these gentle giants of the horse world.

Supplement supplier rewards "forward thinking" retailers

SUPPLEMENTS specialist Animalife has introduced a new retailer group to its Accredited scheme. The Accredited Stockist category – complete with support package and key trading advantages - joins the company’s Accredited Retailer Scheme launched in 2013. The development is designed to reward “forward thinking” retailers, says the company. Animalife is working with its newly appointed Accredited Stockists to enact enhanced margins, dedicated territories and incentives to pull consumers into stores. Other support, such as in-store training, is tailored to suit individual outlets’ needs and ambitions. Likewise Animalife can share its digital marketing expertise to attract local customers to Accredited Stockists. When the outdoor competition season gets underway this Spring, Animalife expects to have between 25 and 50 Accredited Stockists throughout the UK.

Effective retailing Animalife has always championed the effective retailing of its premium product range. “We enjoy spending time personally with each retailer to find out what their individual business requires,” says managing director Ross Riley. “Yes, we offer training; but often it’s more about communicating with entrepreneurial people,” added Ross. “For instance, I’ve had some very interesting discussions lately about how consumers shop by product category rather than brand. “I mean… you don’t go into the supermarket looking for the Heinz aisle, you look for the category of product such as baked beans! And you look for fish fingers, not for the Bird’s Eye freezer…” Another benefit enjoyed by Accredited Stockists is the ability to retail Animalife supplements through their websites. “Once a retailer has spent time with a customer in-store, there’s no point in that customer going off and searching for it elsewhere on the internet,” said Ross. “So the chances are they’ll purchase it there and then. And when they do make that sale of an Animalife product, the retailer can be assured of a good margin.” Find out more by calling Animalife’s Tradelife manager on 0845 365 0050.

Saddlers support new riding stars THE WORSHIPFUL Company of Saddlers has supported emerging talent in equestrian sport for more than 30 years. The sponsorship, which highlights the manufacturing and use of British saddlery, continues this season. In eventing, the Saddlers’ Company will award prizes to the winners of six Pony Trials, the National Under 21 Champion at Houghton International and the National Junior Champion at Brand Hall. A British made jump or eventing saddle will also go to the best placed rider aged under 25 at Badminton, Hopetoun International and Gatcombe. Leather headcollars and bridles will be awarded at other events. “It’s wonderful to have The Worshipful Company of Saddlers on board again in 2016,” said David Holmes, BE chief executive. “Their dedication to eventing and supporting young riders all the way from ponies to four star level is hugely important and highly valued.” • The Saddlers’ Company also supports up and coming showjumpers. Pictured is Kerry Brennan receiving her prize at Olympia from Charles Barclay, Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company. 23 year old Kerry, from Derbyshire, was the best placed rider under 25 on the British Showjumping Gold League last season. Consumer show called off A SISTER show to Your Horse Live, which was due to take place on 23/24 April, has been called off. The Equine Event incorporating Total Confidence Live was to be run by Bauer Media at the South of England Showground. The show - offering shopping and celebrity demonstrations while inviting visitors to bring their own horses for clinics - went ahead last year. “It just didn’t have enough commercial support [to go ahead this year],” said Emma Bedford of Bauer Media. “So we have decided to put our shoulders behind Your Horse Live instead.” Your Horse Live happens at Stoneleigh Park on 12/13 November. WELL WARMED UP: Eco-friendly Scandinavian-style heating is warming the Yorkshire Riding Centre near Harrogate. The bio-mass system was installed by Leeds based BioNordic just before Christmas. Fuelled by wood pellets, it heats the centre’s buildings including its guest house, accommodation block, lodges and chalets. “We needed to replace our old oil-fired boilers, and Bio-Nordic’s solution has future-proofed our heating system while also making longterm financial sense,” said top trainer Chris Bartle who runs the centre. Chris also hopes to lead the German event team, which he coaches, to another Olympic gold medal in Rio this summer.

Patent granted for ‘secret weapon’ girth A PATENT has been granted for the Fairfax Performance Girth. It was used by British riders during London 2012, becoming talked about as ‘Team GBR’s secret weapon’ before being released onto the open market. “Approval of the patent application has been a three year process, but it’s a real coup for us,” said Vanessa Roberts, director of Walsall based Fairfax Saddles. The granting of a patent acknowledges the girth’s unique design and ensures it cannot legally be copied. “The Performance Girth is the only one to have been scientifically proven to improve performance and was the subject of our first scientific paper,” added Vanessa who worked with top horses and riders to develop and test the product.

Eventing relaxes XC dress code RIDERS competing with British Eventing (BE) can wear any colour of boots or breeches for cross country this season. The rules previously stipulated black or brown boots, or short boots and gaiters, plus white or fawn breeches. In another relaxation of its regulations, BE has derestricted the size of sponsors’ logos riders may wear. All Eventing competitors will be allowed to use stopwatches during the cross country phase this season too. This new rule, introduced for a four-month trial period, includes BE100 and below. Stopwatches were previously banned at this lower level of competition.

A GREAT GERMAN WELCOME: A group of UK and Irish retailers was treated to a two-day trip to Iserlohn, Germany to find out how Sprenger makes its bits and spurs. Organised by distributor Zebra Products, the visit included a factory tour and seminar covering products and the company’s history. Pictured, from left, are Brigitte Schulte of Sprenger, Annabell Waters and Lynette Waters of Orchard Barn, Emma Baxter and Gareth Baxter of Horse Bit Shop, Pam Mildner, Lindsay Middleton and Sophie Harrison of Zebra Products, Laura White of Tri Equestrian South, Simon Middleton of Zebra Products, Gareth McCombe of Tri Equestrian North and Natalie Lawrence of Zebra Products.

New shop opens in Yorkshire A NEW tack shop opened at Northallerton Equestrian Centre near Yafforth, North Yorkshire last month (January). The branch of Millbry Hill is next to the café in one of the centre’s two indoor arenas. “Initially we’ll stock everyday items such as grooming kit, jods and basic tack as well as previewing the latest ranges,” said Tina Walker who owns and runs Northallerton Equestrian Centre. “However there’s potential for more shop space in the future as we’ve added a new bay to the arena.” A busy and popular venue, Northallerton Equestrian Centre runs at least five shows a week, from novice level to competitions affiliated to British Dressage, British Showjumping and British Eventing. There’s also a riding school and livery yard on site, while the centre hosts clinics and demonstrations with top names.

£7m move for wholesaler TRILANCO is to move to a £7 million, purpose-built premises. The animal health and equestrian wholesaler’s new headquarters will be at Kirkham in Lancashire, six miles from its current base at Poulton-le-Fylde. Building work began in December and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Trilanco’s new facility, on a six acre site, will include a 110,000 sq ft warehouse. The company says it will support expansion that could see it taking on up to 30 new employees in the future. “We’ve been looking for the perfect site to move to for a while now as our ever increasing product range, customer base and the level of business we’re doing means we’ve outgrown our current location and need more space,” said Trilanco’s managing director Martin Balmer. Trilanco has been at its current site since 1981. • Pictured at a ‘silver spade’ ceremony marking the official start of work on the new project are, from left, quantity surveyor Ian Swallow, Lisa and Martin Balmer of Trilanco, plus Tim Webber, James Webber and site manager David Wallbank of Barnfield Construction.

Acquisition secures knee rolls supply ABBEY England has acquired the machinery to manufacture PU mouldings. It means the company can continue to supply the saddlery trade with knee rolls, thigh blocks and panel rolls of various densities. The machinery, now installed in Abbey England’s Walsall factory, came from its former supplier Akutek. “They were originally a pattern maker for injection mouldings but then bought the machines to make the mouldings as well,” explained Peter Philips of Abbey England. “Akutek was our supplier of bespoke mouldings until last year when they closed the operation down, so we stepped in to maintain the supply chain.” As well as buying the machines, Abbey England has trained a member of staff to operate the injection moulding machines. Akutek still makes the patterns. The moulded knee rolls, thigh blocks and seats are supplied by Abbey England as PU foam. A saddler then covers them in leather.

“This show is buzzing…” BETA International happened in January for the first time last month at the NEC, Birmingham. The independently audited attendance figure, yet to be verified as ETN went to press, was 4,512*. There were 285 exhibitors. “This show is buzzing and feels really optimistic,” said Lynda Mortlock, chairman of the BETA trade fair committee and co-owner of Essex based retailer Ingatestone Saddlery Centre. “There are a lot of new products and innovation this year. I also like that there are more continental stands which adds variety and encourages retailers to be more adventurous,” she added. The earlier date in January – BETA International was traditionally held three or four weeks later in February – was widely welcomed. “Being earlier in the season has really worked in our favour for [helmet brand] Gatehouse with the changes to the hat rules for this season,” said Tracey Woods of distributor Westgate EFI. While Julia Smith, sales director at Finest Brands International, commented: “Our sales team have been taking orders for the Toggi A/W16 collection since November and the earlier date will allow us to close the order book earlier and get stock delivered to retailers in plenty of time.” One in three exhibitors at BETA International 2016 was from outside the UK. “It’s packed with great ideas, international traders and a wide variety in the quality of products with something to suit everyone,” summed up Natalie Garner, Hayden Tuck and Clair Long of York retailer Ride-Away.

Serious buyers tend to spend at least two days at this show, such is its size and scope. “It’s the first time I’ve been and I’m amazed at the wide variety of companies and interesting new products,” said Aishling Denny of Scottish retailer Tarff Valley. Irish buyers on a two-day visit included Kathleen Cowman from Kates Tack Shop in Co Wexford. “I’ve probably spent more than I should, there have been so many good show offers,” she confided. “It’s so easy to fly in and get into the show. I’ll definitely come again.” There was a strong contingent of new exhibitors, many of whom were keen to compare BETA International with other shows they’ve done. “This is a busy show and the visitors are really interested; it’s definitely better than MODA,” said Sophie Charlesworth of thermal undergarment brand Cuddl Duds. Another BETA International debutant, Danish exhibitor House of Montar, Morten Hegelund was delighted with his position close to the fashion show stage. “I’ve got a lot of new customers by coming here,” he said. “It’s better than going to Spoga, so I will be back at BETA [International] next year.” Canadian down clothing specialist Konia Equestrian was also making its first BETA International appearance. “This is so much better than the American shows,” said Melissa Fowles. “We’ve been made so welcome and everything is so well organised…even the carpeting in the aisles is really nice. “We’ve made a lot of new connections so it’s been a great show for us.” The positive, business-like atmosphere was frequently remarked upon. “I really enjoyed the buzz that was around on the Monday,” said Steph Bradley of North Wales based Freedom Saddlery. Amy Duncan and May Pidcock had travelled to the NEC from retailer Equiport’s Cheshire headquarters. “A lot of companies we deal with are here under one roof, which is great,” they told ETN. American retailer John Nunn, who also runs the Nunn Finer wholesale operation, told ETN: “The quality of vendors is very strong and the real buyers are here.” • BETA International 2017 takes place on 22 – 24 January at the NEC, Birmingham. The elegantly styled headgear meets “all current standards including ASTM, VG1 and PAS with the Kitemark,” says UK distributor SLK Ltd. The versatile brand is widely worn by riders in Europe and America and is the choice of Swedish event rider Ludwig Svennerstal (pictured). The helmets’ polycarbonate and advanced ABS composite outer shell has vents on either side as well as at the front and back. Coverings range from traditional suede to sparkling Swarovski crystals. The OneK Defender collection, available in a multitude of colours and finishes, appeals to riders across many disciplines. One model, the OneK Defender Air, has three hidden pockets in the liner to inflate to the wearer’s personal preference. There’s also a discreet release valve to change the fit. In addition, the helmets are available with multiple liners. These fit into the helmets’ shells, enabling retailers to carry minimal stock yet fit many sizes. “Our liners provide flexibility for growing children, shared helmets or for women who wear different hair styles. Only two shells and four extra liners - and you have the tools to fit up to six different head sizes,” says a spokesman for SLK Ltd. The inner liners can be removed for washing or to freshen up a helmet by replacing a well-used, tired one with a new liner. See page 19.

LIFTER panels, new from Passier, are designed to eliminate the need for extra high gussets in horses with high and long withers. When horses have this conformation, the saddle needs to be high enough at the front to avoid wither pressure. Yet a saddle that achieves this often needs extra flocking to raise the rear. And, of course, the higher the rear flocking, the more bridging (uneven contact throughout the panels) is likely. Passier says its Lifter panels ensure that the saddle lies horizontally on the horse’s back enabling good wither clearance and a good contact area. Furthermore, the panels’ short, round shape at the rear means they leave the back as soon as possible. Lifter panels are available on all new Passier saddles at no extra cost.

A horse’s idea of heaven… JUST as horses are longing for grass at the end of a long winter, Emerald Green Feeds has launched Grasstastic. The nutritious, palatable chop is made from best quality fescue grass. It’s high temperature dried to lock in grass’s natural goodness - including the irresistible smell. Containing nothing but grass, Grass-tastic is recommended for improving condition, as well as helping towards a healthy gut, coat shine and general wellbeing. Its high fibre, low starch make-up means it provides slow release, nonfizzy energy for work too. It’s ideal for keeping stabled horses chewing and occupied while replicating a natural diet. And Grass-tastic is more easily managed than long stem forage such as hay by older horses with poor teeth. The RRP for each bright and cheerful 15kg bag is £10.50. Emerald Green Feeds are grown, harvested, dried and packaged on the Poucher family’s Lincolnshire farm, giving them the control to manufacture to a consistent high quality.

Dogs can freshen up on the go WHEN your customers need to clean their dogs on the go, new travel sized packs of Animology Clean Sheets (RRP £4.99) are just the job. Perfect to keep in the car or coat pocket, the extra-large, dual-sided wipes contain Animology’s no rinse shampoo formula. They come in packs of 20, each with a rough side to loosen the dirt and a smooth side to wipe it away. Clean Sheets cut though grease and sticky stuff - including fox poo – and help remove smells in the process. They’re enriched with vitamin E to help protect the coat too. Hunting for the right boots HUNTING folk are the latest group of riders to embrace Tuffa’s Showtime Boots. “Since we introduced the brown version, we’ve found people from different equestrian sports have been attracted to Showtime,” says Michelle Girling of Tuffa Footwear. “The boots’ classic design appeals to lots of people, but we’ve combined this with modern materials and rear zips so the boots are easy to wear, but still look the part.” Showtime is also proving popular with event and dressage riders. While interest from sidesaddle riders has prompted Tuffa to produce a modified version especially for them. It’s due for release this year. Showtime Boots are made from soft Italian leather, have a contoured fit, garter straps, full length rear YKK zips and rubber soles. In sizes 4 to 9, with standard or wide calf widths, and in black or brown, the RRP is £199.99 for standard sizes.

Anti-bacterial grooming kit launched BENTLEY Brushware has developed a collection of grooming products with anti-bacterial technology. Supplied under its SlipNot brand, the brushes, combs and sweat scraper have Microban Silver Shield built-in. The technology, which does not wash off or wear away, is added during manufacture to provide continuous anti-bacterial protection by killing up to 99.99% of bacteria. The supplier says it will also inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, such as E.coli, S.aureus, P.aeruginosa and Strep-Equi. In addition, it reduces stains, odours and product deterioration. The ten piece collection comes in burgundy or blue. www.equestriantradenews.com

17 Riding holiday or new career? TWO new free booklets from BETA are packed with information and inspiration. The revised Take up the Reins in Great Britain riding guide is available for retailers to hand out in-store. The glossy, A5 booklet is perfect for customers wishing to track down a horsey vacation, a weekend trekking – or even an hour’s hacking. Published by BETA as part of its commitment to increasing rider participation, the guide lists contacts alongside expert advice for anyone seeking fun in the saddle. It’s divided into counties and key-coded to help readers find facilities, activities, services and affiliations. The guide also features a wide range of accommodation with equestrian facilities, including hotels, cottages and B&Bs.

Careers advice Jobs in sales, export, design, business, nutrition, marketing and saddlery are just some of those featured in Careers in the Equestrian Industry, BETA’s second new guide. Each entry gives a career overview, with qualifications and experience required, along with key training pathways. “There’s a general misapprehension that equestrian careers tend to consist of riding and grooming jobs or professions such as farriers, equine dentists or physiotherapists,” said Claire Williams of BETA. “In fact, nothing could be further from the truth, as the new guide quite clearly shows. I hope that colleges, universities and those offering careers advice will find the guide a valuable resource, providing plenty of food for thought and helping to set young people on the right path for future employment.” Careers in the Equestrian Industry and Take Up the Reins in Great Britain are available free from the BETA office, tel 01937 587062 or email laurac@beta-int.com. Or by ordering from the BETA online shop at www.beta-uk.org

Please tell us about your horses? We have two. Picador is a bay, eight year old Dutch warmblood by Lupicor out of a Concorde mare. Salamanca a nine year old, bay Dutch warmblood mare by Cathargo out of O'nena de la Nutria who is sired by Kannan. Salamanca is La Silla studbook registered and was purchased from Ben Maher's yard for my daughter Jessica’s 20th birthday.

Both horses are special for different reasons. Salamanca allows me to ride her; well I say ride - she permits me to be a passenger. Picador has comedy value; he’ll tilt his head and say ‘please’ for treats, he also gives kisses. When we bought Picador in 2012, he was quite shy and would stand at the back of his stable. He's really come out of his shell with us and trusts Jessica implicitly. We’ve had a roller coaster journey with this opinionated little horse, but he has the biggest heart. What’s your management mantra?

Where do you keep them?

Jessica always applies this phrase to her horses and her competing: look smart, think smart, ride smart. The horses’ turnout is very important to her and they want for nothing. To us they’re pets as much as competition horses. My mantra is pay the bills, let Jessica look after them as she’s knows how…and keep quiet!

At home in the stable block across the drive from our house. I think they see me as the breakfast waiter - they whicker at me when I open the back door to speed me up!

What are your top three equestrian products?

When Jessica was at university at Hartpury College, the horses went with her. As a member of the Hartpury Equine Academy, she had help with nutrition, physiotherapy and sports psychology as well as training from Corrine action. ughter Jessica in Bracken. The Martin Balmer’s da horses have (Photo: thefotografer) benefited too with Picador now jumping 1.30m competitively and recently coming second in the Stafford International 2* Amateur Grand Prix.

• Easidri Grooming Towel – super absorbent grooming towel that’s ideal for cooling and drying washed legs after a day in the field.

What do you enjoy doing with your horses?

I really enjoy having them at home as they’re nice to have around and I think they teach us a lot. They don’t have the same pressures and concerns as people – they’re much more straightforward.

I’m a glorified groom at shows and the one who pays the bills… There's something wrong there! That said, I do enjoy watching my daughter compete. We regularly go to Blackpool beach as a family with the horses and the dog. It’s great seeing the horses have a paddle and a good gallop. Picador loves to get right up to his chest and swim in the sea.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION A prime spot minutes from the M1 brings customers from far and wide. Deborah Hayward visits Risley Saddlery to find out more.

R

isley Saddlery sits halfway between Nottingham and Derby, close to the M1, cutting a furrow through a patchwork of countryside and suburbia. The store, run by motherand-daughter team Sheila and Claire Matthews, was once a pick-your-own strawberry and dairy farm. In 1983 Sheila and her husband Peter decided to diversify. Today, Risley Saddlery’s home, Sandborough Fields Farm, is a thriving livery yard and 3,200 sq ft retail store packed to the rafters with equestrian products and clothing. The shop, in a former stable block, is a hive of activity. An embroidery and sewing machine whirs away in a small, integral workshop to the side of the main entrance. Row

Our classic blouson Bronte jackets are really good sellers. They’ve always been popular and people buy them and get them embroidered by us. upon row of horsey bits and bobs stretch as far as the eye can see. Unusually, it’s these small but essential items that appear to take pride of place, while jackets and clothing hang from single rails tucked away along the building’s perimeter. “A lot of retailers have moved into country wear, but we stick firmly to rider clothing and equipment,” explains Sheila, who divides her time between helping out in the shop and taking Risley Saddlery out on the road.

Risley Saddlery has a perfect geographical location near the M1, in the countryside between Nottingham and Derby.

“We stock what we know. And if people have taken the trouble to drive down our long drive, they need to be able to get what they want.” Sheila loves doing the shows. “I love getting out there and talking to people,” she said. “Peter drives the lorry and at one time we used to do around 100 a year including local shows. “We always do Horse of the Year Show and Your Horse Live. I enjoy them so much, I’d do them all if I could, but my daughter is not so keen and it wouldn’t be fair to leave her alone to run the shop.” Sheila and Claire are supported by a team of eight part-time staff. They include Sheila Beardsley, who takes care of rug repairs, and Rosie Swain who’s a whiz with embroidery, producing eyecatching, colourful designs for the scores of customers who commission her to personalise a Bronte blouson jacket they’ve bought from the store. “They’re one of our bestselling garments,” says Sheila. “They’re really versatile jackets and people just love them.” Risley Saddlery is well-known for the English leatherwork it sells and a ‘build your own’ bridle service. “I used to sell complete bridles, but we were always left with plain reins or nosebands that weren’t wide enough, so I thought

we would create our own,” explains Sheila. “I always buy from Morris & Nolan Saddlemakers, in Walsall, and have done for 30 years. They’ve been very loyal to me and I am to them. They can make whatever we want – they once even made us a 4” wide noseband for an 18.2hh! “We sell Morris & Nolan saddles, too. In fact, I’m a saddler fitter – not a qualified Society of Master Saddlers saddle-fitter, although I am a member, but I joined long before there was any form of qualification. I learned how to fit saddles with Roger Milner, of Melton Mowbray. “Surprisingly, we don’t do many second-hand saddles – you’d think that we would with the financial climate, but it doesn’t seem to work like that.”

Risley Saddlery’s easyto-access location draws in customers from a wide geographical area. “We get people from as far as Yorkshire and south of Birmingham because we are on the cusp of three counties,” says Sheila. “They just get off at Junction 25 and we’re here. It is very much a case of location, location, location.” From the 20 liveries on site to those who travel in from further afield, this friendly store boasts a loyal following and generates plenty of repeat business. “They like to stick with what they know,” says Sheila. “They’re people for whom the last thing to go would be their horse. One man who came in said that he’s seventh in the pecking order but the hamster’s just died, so he gone

21 ETN asks Sheila What made you set up shop? We used to buy our horsey stuff from a lady who used to sell things from her garage. When she packed up, there was nowhere that we could buy reasonably priced stuff, so we started with a very small amount of stock and did the shows as a sideline. What are the best and worst bits about running your own shop? I love talking to people, so that’s the best, and the worst is all the paperwork. There’s far more than there used to be, but you have to take the rough with the smooth. Do you sell feed? Yes, we’ve got a shed full of all the top brands – Spillers, TopSpec, Dodson & Horrell, Dengie. There’s not much profit margin in feed, but it’s a useful way to get people into the shop. How do you promote Risley Saddlery? We use social media and sponsor some of the local shows. Doing the bigger shows is also a great advertisement for us. Where do you find a lot of your stock? We go to BETA International and I’m always looking for something new. I try to find at least one new thing a year. When you’re not working, what do you do? We walk, swim and read. The Peak District is on our doorstep, so we take the three dogs into Dovedale. up to sixth!” Despite the confidence in her bricks-and-mortar store, Sheila is aware that internet shopping poses a threat. “I don’t like the way people come in and try on a hat and buy it online, but you’ve just got to accept it,” she says. “This is competition and I’ve never shied away from it. I believe that it sharpens you up. That’s the way everything is going and we have had to make sure that we have a good website. Claire, who

looks after it, is amazing and I really couldn’t do it without her. “We have plans to grow the business – all good, positive stuff – and I’m enjoying running the shop. There are lots out there doing the country clothing and fancy interior things, but it’s good, solid equestrian stuff for us. I really can’t see the point in selling the same as everybody else.”

Bedding & Stable Tools

AND SO TO BEDDING…

22 After the wettest winter on record, many horses are likely to remain stabled for the coming weeks. So lighten your customers’ loads with some brilliant bedding and magnificent mucking out tools.

More bedding equals better rest, says new research THE greater the surface area of soft bedding provided, the more time the stabled horse will spend lying down. The finding from new research has been highlighted by bedding brand Nedz. “Longer times spent lying down are important, as they allow horses to recover from stress and exercise, promoting better equine welfare”, says scientist Christina Rufener, of the Ethology and Animal Welfare Unit at ETH Zurich, in Switzerland.

Tools of the trade

ETN asks Chris Birch, sales manager at Faulks & Cox Ltd (FCL), how to make the most of retailing stable tools and utensils. Q. How can stocking stable tools help equestrian retailers diversify profitably? A. In the past, many saddlers have left the supply of tools to the agricultural merchants. Shop space and lack of certainty about the profitable ranges to stock combine to make retailers nervous. The new Tubtrugs This is a pity because stocking tools is Tidee Companion Set more than another string to the bow – it’s was introduced at a bow in its own right! BETA International 2016. FCL has removed the risks involved with stocking tools by making the products The incredibly strong attractive, top quality and supplying them Gorilla Broom comes in shelf-saving presentation Profit Packs in a choice of six which make the shop look great. types with a compact stand to promote Also, our Tubtrugs and Gorilla Broom sales and save space. ranges sell to a really diverse customer base. So saddlers will find themselves taking money for uses other than equestrian… pets, gardening, chickens, household, the list is endless. Q. When retailer buyers are choosing a range to stock, what should they look for? A. Obviously, retailers want profitable products that sell quickly without comebacks. Wm. Faulks Tools, Tubtrugs and Gorilla Brooms are all designed to do just that while brightening up the darkest corner of the shop. Q. Surely stable tools only sell in the autumn and winter? A. Well, one thing’s for sure…horses don’t stop pooing in summer! Naturally the mucking-out tools slow up while horses are turned out to grass, but the hedges still needs cutting, the paddock needs maintaining, the ditches need clearing, fences need mending and the yard needs sweeping. Yes, there’s a demand for tools all year round. FEBRUARY 2016 EQUESTRIAN TRADE NEWS

Nedz Original and Nedz Pro offer cosy, comfortable and absorbent bedding which encourage horses to rest properly, says the bedding company. Both products go through a dust extraction process. In addition, Nedz bedding features the Natural Nedz formula. This organic blend of manuka, silver, cade oil and aloe vera supports equine health and helps promote a hygienic stable environment. The RRP on Nedz Original and Nedz Pro is between £6.50 and £8.50 per 20kg bale. See page 24. Q. How can retailers with limited space maximise their sales of tools? A. Easy! All the products we sell at FCL have purpose-designed Profit-Pack presentation, complete with show cards designed to maximise ‘shelf-shout’ as well as shelf space. Q. For retailers who’ve never stocked stable tools before, please name your top four best-selling tools to help them get started? A. I can’t do that really - because all of the products we stock sell well, but maybe with seasonal or weather variances. Then you can get local ‘hot spots’ like the customer who sells proportionately far more Tubtrugs because a local catering company has caught on to how great they are in their industry! Shopkeepers are welcome to ring me (on 07966 288272) and I’ll make sure they get a representative visit to run through their local requirements and to tailor their buying needs to their particular business.

The extra capacity Tubtrugs Scoopour is made from food grade plastic, so it’s ideal for equine or smallholder feed, liquids and kitchen use.

Tubtrugs are used everywhere, giving them a wide customer base.

Q. What’s changed in the tools sector in the last five years? A. Ever since we introduced bright pink Tubtrugs in the 1990s, colour has increased in importance. Also, the quality has been improved time and time again through a process of continual listening to customers and integrating their ideas into the final products. Combined with relatively lower prices, people have been encouraged to own their own tools, even for seasonal use. Q. What do you expect to develop in the next five years? A. You’ll have to wait and see… We’re always innovating and making new items as well as improving traditional designs and the ways of delivering them to end-users through our trade customers. FCL likes to keep products ‘under wraps’ until such opportunities as BETA International last month give us the chance to reveal all. t Give Chris a call on 01455 848184 or 07966 288272. www.equestriantradenews.com

TALK about standing the test of time… Tyre Rubber skips came into being in 1981 - which means horses have been kicking, chewing and rolling on them for 35 years! Fortunately, horses don’t hurt themselves when doing this – and they also eat and drink from Tyre Rubber products. So maybe that’s why these useful containers keep on selling? “We hear from consumers who say they bought our skips over 30 years ago and they’re still going strong,” says Steve Faulks of Tyre Rubber supplier Faulks & Cox Ltd (FCL). “People used to say ‘the trouble is they’re too strong, you’ll run out of customers.’ But of course horse owners really appreciate versatility and value, so we’ve never run out of sales.” When Tyre Rubber was joined by the Tubtrugs range in the 1990s, colour and style joined practicality in stable yards and paddocks. “Tubtrugs are used for everything from feed and water, to mucking out, soaking hay and storing equipment, the list is endless… the Tubtrugs Micro is even used to serve crisps and sweets in the tack room,” laughs Steve. Once Tubtrugs and Tyre Rubber were established, FCL turned its attention to stable rakes, shovels and accessories, a move that saw managing director Dean Cox bring colour, design and value to this market too. FCL now has a full range of everything needed to keep a stable yard running smoothly. From mucking out forks to the boredom buster Drip Feed balls, there are always new products in the pipeline too - like the six tine, T handled fork introduced at BETA International. FCL also has an eye on helping retailers make the most of this versatile products range. “We provide full marketing and point of sale support in the form of our unique Profit Packs complete with header cards. They increase sales and enhance the store without giving up shelf space,” says Dean. So here’s to another 35 profitable years… See page 17.

Wave goodbye to heavy loads NOBLE Outfitters’ Wave Fork is light yet super-strong. The aircraft-grade aluminium handle even has textured handgrips for added comfort. The fork looks good too. With interchangeable tines in seven different colours, multiple combinations and a customised look can be created to match a team’s or sponsor’s livery – or identify the fork on a busy livery yard. The Copolymer plastic resin outer tines form a basket for maximum loading; while the patented design has been tested for durability to tackle the toughest of jobs. Noble Outfitters guarantees all parts for five years. The RRP is £39.95. See page 25. FEBRUARY 2016 EQUESTRIAN TRADE NEWS

25 Engineered in Britain “BEING a British manufacturer is a great honour,” says Leon Fynn, general manager of Fynalite. The Warwickshire based company’s stable tools range includes a product suitable for every bedding system. So whether it’s shavings, paper, pellet, wood chip, hemp, cardboard, straw, chopped straw, deep litter or shallow litter, Fynalite has a tool to tackle any task. “Our investment in tooling and machinery has been pivotal in our quest to improve the quality of our products and to ensure that the end user has the best possible tool for the job,” adds Leon. “By manufacturing here in the UK, we’re also able to react quickly to market demands and can deliver quickly as and when required, despite offering more than 160 different products.” See page 24.

Who’s the boss? BOSS Tools has added vibrant new colours to its range of good value manure forks. Bright, light in weight and well balanced, the forks come with either a steel or wooden ash handle and are manufactured in the UK by Fynalite. “Flexible ordering with low minimum quantities is part of the commitment to assist retailers and simplify stock holding,” says brand owner Leon Fynn.

BEDDING is bulky to stock. Yet with modern, attractive packaging it can look good even in the swankiest saddlery shop. So if space is tight, store it outside (with appropriate protection) and display an open bale in store for customers to touch and smell. Make use of the excellent point of sale information, posters and banners many bedding suppliers now offer. Retailing bedding brings many benefits; not least of which is regular repeat sales.

A small matter of bedding MINIATURE pony owner Angela White, from Bardney in Lincolnshire, chooses easibed to keep this cute pair comfortable. In fact, Kyra 17 (pictured right) and the grey Glenoaklands Lulu 16 have been on the bedding since its first appearance in 2000. “Someone had a lorry full of easibed at a show and I decided to try some for my ponies,” said Angela. “Until then, we’d used straw and it was proving quite tedious. We’d also tried other bedding, but nothing compares to easibed.” Angela and her husband John show their ponies at county shows all over the country. “Not only is easibed easier to muck out, but it doesn’t stick to the girls’ manes or tails, especially Lulu’s as she has a very long, thick mane,” she added. “easibed saves me so much time, it’s fantastic.”

Some women like to be kept in the loop about what’s happening at work, which may allow for a smoother transition at the end of maternity leave. Others prefer to be left alone to focus on their new bundle! Employees can work up to ten days during their maternity leave. Known as ‘keeping in touch’ (KIT) days, these are optional.

M

aternity leave is rarely discussed openly in the work place, yet we cannot change biology. Women have been having babies for millennia; but since last year, fathers have been taken into consideration too. They can now share up to 50 weeks of leave and up to 37 weeks of pay1. So what can employers do to retain talented workers and what options do employees have to retain their careers?

Managing a pregnant employee A pregnant employee must tell her manager by the end of the 15th week before the baby is due. There’s no right to paid time off to attend antenatal appointments until

an employer is aware of a pregnancy. As soon as an employer knows about a pregnancy, they should perform a risk assessment2 and take necessary action to remove risks. Most roles can be adapted to suit a pregnant employee. The process can even open doors to upskill in new areas, such as taking on more of an administrative role, or learning a new part of the business, which could benefit you both.

Leave and pay While on maternity leave, an employee may be entitled to maternity pay either under a contract of employment or by law through Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) or Maternity Allowance (MA),

“Working mothers play an increasingly important role in our industry.” which can be paid for up to 39 weeks3. If you run a small business, as an employer you can usually reclaim 92% of employees’ SMP, Paternity, Adoption and Shared Parental Pay. You can reclaim 103% if your business qualifies for Small Employers’ Relief4.

Clearly having an employee on maternity leave usually means a shortfall in staff. This is often more noticeable in smaller teams, and will vary from business to business as to how you handle it. You may want to get someone in to cover the maternity leave on a short term contract, cover the shortfall within your existing team or fill the position internally with a short term secondment. The key in every case is to plan ahead and discuss all the options with the team involved.

Returning to work Being on maternity leave needn’t mean that your brain turns to mush! Legally, your employer must keep your job open for you, so you don’t need to worry that you will be replaced during your time off. To make the transition as smooth as possible, consider asking your employer if you can attend some KIT days particularly if there is some training occurring or a team meeting. You could consider doing www.equestriantradenews.com

27 an online learning course to return to work stronger than ever with renewed skills and enthusiasm. Employers - remember that staff are your biggest and most valuable asset. Working mothers play an increasingly important role in our industry. Recognise their qualities and strengths, and be the employer they want to work for. The rewards can be immense.

What if you run your own business? Maternity rights around selfemployment is a complex area and growing more complex by the day as more and more women set up their own businesses. The main concern is over maternity pay. Generally, only employees are entitled to maternity leave SMP. However, there are some circumstances where women who are selfemployed can qualify for SMP. If you are a director of a limited company, are considered an employee of the company and have been working there for at least 26 weeks preceding the 15th week before your due date, you can

claim SMP. Otherwise you may qualify for maternity allowance (MA), which is £138.18 a week for 39 weeks, compared with SMP which is generally six weeks at 90% of your salary and the following 33 weeks on £138.18. You’re still allowed to draw an income from your business while receiving MA – you’re just not allowed to do the work yourself. If you are a sole trader, you can change your business structure to a partnership by adding a partner.

A potential asset With preparation, discussion and an open-minded approach from both employer and employee, the journey into parenthood needn’t be fraught with worry. It can help you to recognise talents, build team work and address office-based tasks that have been on the back burner for too long. In fact it should be better viewed as a potential asset for your business!

HOW THE SHOW GOT THE TRADE BUZZING…

ETN reports from BETA International 2016

• ITV newscaster Alastair Stewart hosted Talking Business, BETA International’s first industry debate.

BIT specialist Neue Schule signed to return as main sponsor of the trade fair in 2017 for the fourth consecutive year. “Every year the show has delivered results beyond our expectations. We have seen increasing demand from across the UK and, significantly for Neue Schule, BETA International has brought excellent international exposure,” said Sarfraz Mian. The North Yorkshire company’s CEO received the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year Honours List for export services. Claire Thomas, organiser of BETA International, added: “We are extremely pleased to receive Neue Schule’s support once again and look forward to working closely with the company for another year. The decision to continue as main sponsor is a fantastic endorsement of the show’s strength and reputation as a powerful business platform for UK and overseas trade.” Pictured are, from left, are Sarfraz Mian, Claire Thomas, Heather Hyde of Neue Schule, Lynda Mortlock, chairman of the BETA trade fair committee, BETA International sales manager James Palmer and BETA International press officer Deborah Hayward.

David Haythornthwaite, chairman of the Tangerine Group, David ‘Monty’ Stuart-Monteith, owner of Shaws Equestrian, Sara Blackshaw, equine category manager of Countrywide, John Nunn, president of Nunn Finer in the US, Phil Duff, business consultant and non-executive director, and Lucy Higginson, journalist and brand developer, went headto-head as they discussed Black Friday, manufacturer’s advertising price (MAP) and the implications if Britain voted to leave the EU. Members of the audience took up Alastair’s invitation to give their views too.

MANY exhibitors commented on the cheerful welcome from the team in the organiser’s office, from left, Lesley Manson, Clair Webster and Sally Beeden.

NEW from Holland was the Hay Playbag which keeps horses occupied while saving wasted forage. “This is a very nice show. We’ve been so well looked after and done lots of new business,” said Mark Derwig. FEBRUARY 2016 EQUESTRIAN TRADE NEWS

LIVE-ACTION product displays – often involving real horses – proved a hit in the Charles Owen Learning Centre @ The Horse Demonstration & Seminar Arena. Highlights included the sponsor’s managing director Roy Burek sharing his vast knowledge of rider safety equipment, Heather Hyde of Neue Schule on bitting and BETA executive director Claire Williams addressing the latest safety standards. The arena also featured scenes with BETA International’s chosen charities, The Brooke and Hope Pastures, giving heart-warming presentations of their work. Visiting SQPs (suitably qualified persons) claimed ten CPD points by attending a seminar. Blacks Solicitors advised visitors on how their businesses might be affected by new pensions obligations and the living wage.

CORE equestrian products such as feed and supplements, bedding and stable tools were prominent. “The show has left us positively overwhelmed,” said Ernest Plumins of Latvian bedding exhibitor Horse Span. “We reached our target for the whole show within the first day.”

TALK about going the extra mile… the show’s operations manager Jackie Woolley walked a whopping 37.5 miles – and that was only during the three days the show was open.

BETA International stalwart Nick Gray announced his retirement – and the sale of his equestrian gifts business Grays of Shenstone to long-standing employee Greg Copeland. Nick has been involved with the show since it was the BETA Travelling Trade Fair in 1980. In the early years, Grays transported exhibitors’ stand and wares from one venue to the next. “Those were special days, full of camaraderie,” he recalled, “nowadays the fair is very professional.” Nick began working for Grays when he left school at 15 to join the family firm. “We began importing in 1993 and my first visits to Hong Kong, Taiwan and China were like discovering a new world, which I suppose we were,” he told ETN. “Ironically, we’ve now revolved almost full circle to mainly UK sourced products where possible.” Nick has been married to Kate, who also works in the business, for 32 years. With their three children pursuing their own careers, they decided to hand over the reins to Greg who has worked on the retail side at Grays for 14 years. Retirement at the end of this year will give Nick more time for his Presidency of the Rotary Club of Walsall, other voluntary work and riding his Harley Davidson motorbike. He is pictured (left) congratulating new business owner Greg Copeland.

EXETER based retailer Farmers’ Friend won the ETN prize draw and £1,000s worth of products donated by magazine advertisers and show exhibitors. “It’s great news,” said James Phillips, saddlery manager at the business that was established in 1877. “We had a very useful day at BETA International; it’s always worth going.” The winner of the Quizmaster Challenge run in ETN December issue was Diane Whiting of South Houghton Equestrian, Heddon-on-the-Wall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Diane collected a luxury food and drink hamper FEBRUARY 2016 EQUESTRIAN TRADE NEWS

YOUNG eventer Sophie Beaty (pictured) was spotted at her sponsor Noble Outfitters’ stand. But Matt Cummins - the company’s new sales manager UK and Europe - didn’t make it to the show. He had the perfect excuse, however… Matt and his wife Charlotte were celebrating the birth of their daughter Saoirse who arrived weighing 8.8lbs the day before BETA International opened. Her delightful name means freedom in Irish. “Extremely busy,” was how Justine Smiley described Noble Outfitters’ first day at the show. “At one point we had three people selling to top notch retailers,” she added.

BETA announced two significant developments in the feed sector. The NOPS scheme becomes a stand-alone code from 1 February. And a new BETA feed approval mark has been approved by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) enabling manufacturers to apply for accreditation for products suitable for horses and ponies prone to equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS).

ALASTAIR Stewart, whose sons show jump, cast a knowledgeable eye over many stands. Here he’s in animated conversation with Tom MacGuinness of Horseware Ireland.

GETTING buyers’ hands on products is a great reason to exhibit, as Linda Grandia of American company EquiCube was quick to point out. “We need people to try it, to feel it. We’ve had dealers in contact just waiting to meet us here for that reason,” said Linda. She developed EquiCube to help riders train their core strength while in the saddle. www.equestriantradenews.com

AT ANIMOLOGY, Mandy Meer was on hand with some great grooming tips – demonstrating the properties of Mane Tamed de-tangling serum on real horse hair. “We’ve reached people here that we wouldn’t normally see, so we’re very pleased,” she said. Animology is a major player in the pet market and exhibited some great new equestrian lines here.

VET Vicky Farr did a great job of explaining the science behind MSD Animal Health’s latest equine launch, Coopers Gut Range. While equine gastric ulcers are a currently hot topic, these products address issues which don’t show up when a horse is ‘scoped. Yet they can hit the spot when a horse, in Vicky’s words, “isn’t quite right.” Find out more in ETN soon. It was a first BETA International for Vicky and her colleague Rachel Bradbury, pictured being interviewed by ETN editor Liz Benwell. “It’s been a good show with a lot of visitors and a lot of interest from shops,” they said.

DRESSAGE star Zoe Sleigh (pictured centre) called at Utopia Saddlemakers to collect her bespoke and very splendid new saddle. “We’ve been swamped,” said Helen Stone of the company she runs with husband Nick. “We’ve had enquiries from the UK and overseas with a good strong lead from Canada.”

SPURS were a big talking point following showjumper Bertram Allen’s elimination at Olympia when blood was found on his horse’s side. At Easyspur, Easytools and Easystuds, engineer and horseman Ivan Kennedy had a host of solutions to this and many other equestrian conundrums. “We’ve had export enquiries from the UK, Sweden and Australia,” said Ivan who hails from Co Wicklow in Ireland. “It’s such a good show – you just have to be here,” he added. The multi-talented Ivan has also been a stunt rider appearing in a host of movies including Braveheart.

• “MY FIRST BETA International experience has been wonderful and I’m loving it,” said Chris Wilkinson, who barely had time to

draw breath on a busy Carr & Day & Martin stand. “It’s a hundred miles an hour, but that’s the way we like it.”

“A GREAT show, brilliantly organised,” was the verdict from Stephen Murphy at wholesaler Agrihealth, whose team is pictured ready for another busy day at the show. Talking points from this Northern Ireland based company were additions to its leovet horsecare range, Fenceman electric fencing and new clippers and trimmers from the Liveryman range.

IN THE midst of a wet, muddy winter, what better to introduce to buyers than a range of laundry products? Absorbine even has a line that enables leather to be machine washed. “It’s going really well, we like this show very much,” said Chris Jacobi, president of the American brand.

A GOVERNMENT start-up grant enabled BETA International newcomer Equimedpak to exhibit. “I’m overwhelmed with the feedback we’ve had,” said Mandy Hall who developed the grab-and-go first aid kit following an accident with her own horse. “I’ve taken lots of pre-orders and had plenty of international enquiries.”

THERE was a fascinating story to be heard at Ellis Rugby. Kevin Ellis, who happens to share a surname with William Web Ellis (the inventor of the rugby), has researched the original clubs that played the game before standard rules were set in 1871. The result is a stunning collection of rugby shirts. Made in modern, technical fabrics, they feature the authentic badges and mottos of clubs such as the Flamingos and Hornets that would otherwise have been lost in the mists of time. A great gift idea for horsey women’s husbands!

WITH the Rio Olympic Games in her sights, eventer Nicola Wilson was spotted fine-tuning her horses’ diets with Nicola and Philip Tyler at TopSpec. “People are keen to talk business this year,” said Philip speaking from the stand that also displayed Equerry Horse Feeds. “I’d say we’re 20% up on visitors to the stand compared with last year.”

ROCKFISH’S minimalist white stand, which put wellies on well-lit pedestals, was tremendously effective. Yet despite its highly professional look, most of the main components were made between Christmas and New Year by director Marcus Aldred’s own hand. “It’s been a really good show for us,” he told ETN. “We’ve reached some UK retailers we wouldn’t have done otherwise, and also found a new German distributor.”

IT WAS a first BETA International for Kingsley Equestrian. And its German handrolled bridlework and saddle pads that borrow technology from the aerospace industry went down a storm. The London based company has been set up by dressage rider and trainer Anand Patel to act as distributor for the Kingsley brand which is already big in Europe. “I felt really nervous on Saturday [the day before the show] because this isn’t really my ‘day job’; I’m really a rider,” said Anand. “But the interest has been phenomenal. We’ve had buyers from Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa and Denmark. “I know the saddle pads work because I’ve been riding on them for a year and I’m encouraging retailers to do the same and try them. We’ve also had a lot of interest from buyers looking for high quality products to embroider.” Pictured with Anand is ETN editor Liz Benwell taking advantage of the Kingsley saddle pads’ shock absorbing properties to revive her feet.

ANGIE Garton, who previously ran Horsemasters Distributions’ PR office, was overseeing media matters on Fairfax Saddles’ stand. She’d just started a new job with the Walsall manufacturer.

APPRENTICES from the Saddlery Training Centre and students from Capel Manor College competed in the Society of Master Saddlers’ competitions as visitors admired their skills. Sunday’s competition was won by Corrin King. On Monday, Lucy Ellis took the honours. Tuesday’s winner was Naomi Rogers. FEBRUARY 2016 EQUESTRIAN TRADE NEWS

PIGS really were flying at Jenkinsons/Elico Equestrian! The herd of fluffy pink porkers were cute mascots for new Elico Little Piggy Haynets, designed to slow down equine eating rates. And the Ellis family - Stephen, Elizabeth, Keith and Richard - couldn’t resist taking their little piggies to the BETA International market. New co-ordinating fleece rugs, bandages and bonnets, plus memory foam accessories, were well received by visitors. “The show’s done the job we needed it to do to promote our Elico brand,” said Keith Ellis of the West Yorkshire based wholesaler. www.equestriantradenews.com

• The saddlery competitions were the first port of call

for Hilary Lambe of Sheffield based HFL Leatherwork. “I’d like to see more tools and so on, although Abbey England always has a good selection [of workshop materials]. I always enjoy coming to BETA International – it’s always interesting to see what other [saddlers] are doing.”

• “It’s been fun and we need more time here than just

two days,” said Lorraine Wickham, who was buying for retailer Gillett Cook of Faversham in Kent. “The Shires New Product Gallery has been really helpful, I went there first. I’m looking for something a bit different to keep my customers interested and I really like Imperial Riding and Bogs [footwear] for that reason.” Lorraine added: “ETN was my Bible for planning my visit here – and I’ve brought it with me too.”

There was excellent use of space, with all displays meticulously planned and arranged. Great attention to detail to create a warm, welcoming environment that invited a high volume of footfall. The company had gone to great lengths to flag up its latest new products to retailers and the media – displaying them in the stand entrance to fantastic effect. Staff were extremely helpful, chatty and demonstrated a high level of product knowledge. Highly commended: Shires Equestrian Products Judges’ comments: An attractive stand both inside and out, with an eye-catching circular-feature product display. Clean and contemporary, this was an inviting, positive place to go, with staff who were highly attentive and friendly. Fashion Show

DRAMA ON THE RUNWAY

ETN reports on the clothing collections that brought a splash of colour to the Fashion Show at BETA International 2016.

E

questrian and country fashions arrived on the runway in an explosion of colour and digital drama at this year’s BETA International Fashion Show, sponsored by Ekkia under its flagship brand Equi-Thème. This chic French brand opened the show with a classy collection of rider wear created from a red, white and blue colour palette. Beautifully cut breeches sporting a sprinkling of diamante and glitter trims brought understated glamour to the runway. These were teamed with hoodies, body-skimming shirts, jackets and gilets to deliver a cool, contemporary range of garments. Horseware Ireland’s designers nailed it once again, producing a fantastic array of equestrian and country clothing. Green and grey, and mid-blue and rust-brown colour combinations set the tone as breeches, gilets, jackets and coats rocked the runway. Horseware’s quilted jackets and full-length coat – both with a luxurious fur trim – were definite scene stealers. House of Montar raised the bar for rider wear to challenge traditional design concepts and deliver a collection that was practical but unbelievably sassy. Breeches teamed with co-ordinating jackets in shades of navy, grey and green were ontrend, but it was the breeches/jods with the appearance of washed-out denim that shone with their fashionable fabrics, glitter “grip strips” and sparkle trims. Body protector specialists Airowear and Champion each illustrated that safety and style can go hand in hand by highlighting their latest body protectors – the Hickstead safety vest for showjumpers from Airowear and the Unisex Titanium from Champion. Toggi introduced its autumn/winter

www.equestriantradenews.com

range of country tweeds and chunky knits in soft, green tones. Attention to detail was evident, particularly in the case of the brand’s elegant jackets with fur-trimmed collars and cinched waists for a sophisticated silhouette. Toggi also unveiled its latest rider wear capsule collection in red, white and blue. This featured a head-turner of a jacket with a long tail flap –perfect for keeping out the wind and rain. Mark Rhodes Nørgaard, Kastel Denmark’s European sales manager (pictured below), sang his chart-topping hit Hygge Nygge during the brand’s scene. There’s no definitive English translation, but it equates to “a warm, snug, cosy feeling” – and that’s something that the company and this 23-year-old pop singer brought to the show.

Smart and stylish breeches provided the perfect foil for the Kastel Denmark range of long-sleeved zipped tops, jackets and polos in bold shades of blue, aqua, purple, pink and black. Exquisite breeches and long riding boots are the hallmark of Tredstep Ireland, famed for its simple, elegant lines and quality materials. Colour palettes were a contrast of soft, pastel hues and bold, dramatic shades of red and grey. Texture and co-ordinating tones were introduced in patterned “grip strips” and knee and seat pads to create comfortable, greatlooking equestrian gear. Kerbl’s Covalliero brand brought a fantastic – and diverse – collection of rider wear to the runway. Deep colours created mystery and a sense of excitement as jackets, breeches, zipped tops and shirts in black, navy and brown – punctuated with brand logos and oversize silver press-stud fasteners – were introduced to an appreciative audience. The collection included an eye-catching black jacket with full seat vent. Harry Hall – and the Harry Hall Hi-Viz collections – ended the show on a high, with this British brand flying the flag for stylish functionality and safety. The range of breeches, long sleeved tops, gilets and hoodies embraced colour in a big way, with a distinctive pink/peach shade appearing throughout. Harry Hall Hi-Viz injected a degree of va-va-voom into its garments, highlighting that safety does not have to be boring. Red carpet treatment for BETA Business Awards winners

2016

ETN reports on this year’s BETA Business Awards

T

he red carpet was rolled out for the equestrian trade when members gathered to hear the winners of the 2016 BETA Business Awards announced. These highly prized accolades, presented during the annual BETA Gala Dinner at the National Motorcycle Museum, near Birmingham, on Sunday 24 January, acknowledge companies and individuals judged to have made considerable contributions to the industry. Guests enjoyed a drinks reception before taking their seats for a three-course dinner. Once the meal and presentations were over, guests danced and some even took their turn on the indoor nine-hole mini-golf course. The event’s raffle raised £1,600 for Riding for the Disabled and HorseBack UK. Prizes included a £240 leisure spa break voucher from Whittlebury Hall, a set of glasses from Burridge Trophies, a luxury hamper from BETA International and champagne from BETA. “I would like to congratulate all the winners and finalists who have come so far against some extremely tough competition,” said BETA executive director Claire Williams. “Once again, our judges had a tough task in selecting the final winners, as we received a high degree of nominations providing extremely compelling reasons why each nominee should receive an award. It is fantastic to see the BETA Business Awards continue to develop and grow in this way.” The winners of the 2016 BETA Business Awards are...

HARRY HALL RETAIL EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR Winner: Jane Yeoman, Countrywide Farmers, Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan This award recognises the employee showing initiative, excellence in customer service, product knowledge and commitment to professional retailing. It is intended for shopfloor employees only, not managers, and nominations were invited from employers or sales representatives. The finalists were interviewed to determine the winner, who received a cash prize of £200, with BETA training vouchers going to her employer. One of the judges said of the winner’s interview: “Jane was everything an employer could want – calm, clear, relaxed, pleasant – and gave detailed and thoughtful answers. Her experience and professionalism shone through. If Jane were an employee of mine, I would be nothing short of elated!”

UKTI EXPORT AWARD Winner: Vale Brothers, Walsall, Staffordshire Runner-up: Group55 (Animology), Preston, Lancashire This award is presented to the company that has achieved sustained increases in export activity over a period of three years. This year saw the most nominations ever received for the award. Judges noted that Vale Brothers was a company not afraid to tackle difficult markets. The winner showed a good strategic approach that didn’t shy away from markets others might perceive as challenging. The company also proved the importance of market visits to really get to know its customers, something that has patently reaped rewards.

EQUINE CAREERS SALES REPRESENTATIVE OF THE YEAR Winner: Suzi Law, TopSpec, Pickhill, North Yorkshire This award rewards excellence in product and customer knowledge. Retailer nominations were followed by votes and an interview with the finalists.

EQUESTRIAN EVENT OF THE YEAR SUPPORTED BY HENSON FRANKLYN Winner: Horse of the Year Show Runner-up: Your Horse Live This accolade acknowledges the event at which trade stands are present that best works with its exhibitors and takes their needs and requirements fully into consideration, and views its tradestands as an integral part of its success. Known as the world’s most famous horse show, the winning event attracts long-established and loyal visitor numbers year after year. In 2016, the show is in its 68th year. A nominating visitor said it provided “a magical atmosphere, with great shopping and attractions, with a variety of competitions on each day”.

Suzi was repeatedly described by nominators as having fantastic product knowledge and being extremely friendly and enthusiastic about her work. A judge said of her interview: “Suzi showed immense dedication and commitment to her job, being prepared to go the extra mile to provide a really good service. BETA Business Awards BLACKS SOLICITORS TRADE SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR Winner: Trilanco, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire

48 Amateur Rider Winner: Ricki Riley

Nominator Horzehoods began a small sponsorship of the winner two years ago, when it was a young company. Not only has Ricki been a great ambassador but, says Horzehoods, she has also become part of the product development team purely for the love of developing great products and to live up to her role as a sponsored team rider.

This award goes to the manufacturer, wholesaler or distributor judged to offer the best in delivery, customer service, product knowledge and awareness of retailers’ requirements. Nominations from both retailers and suppliers themselves were accepted. Judging of shortlisted companies was followed by a retail members’ vote. One nominator described the winner as “efficient and reliable, with high-quality goods and excellent service”. Judges said: “The winner’s commitment to customer service was clear in their entry and reflected in retailer comments.” BETA SPONSORED RIDER AWARD This award, in two categories, acknowledges sponsored riders who make the greatest contribution to the trade, as nominated by their sponsors. It is presented to those who have participated fully in building a relationship with their sponsors, generating good results for them as well as themselves.

BETA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Winner: Bill Vero Bill received the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of the great contribution he has made to the equestrian industry through his commitment to rider safety as a pioneer of protective headwear. He joined his family’s business, Everitt W Vero & Co – known for its Everoak brand of helmets for the equestrian, motor-racing and motorcycle-racing sectors – in 1960. His job was making the mould and painting distinctive patterns on helmets for legends of the motor circuit, including Jack Brabham, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Stirling Moss and Barry Sheene. When the Jockey Club and Brigadier Tony Teacher approached the business, Bill was involved in the design of the original fibreglass jockey skull cap, working closely with those such as Brough Scott who trialled it while racing. From the 1970s, he was a member of British Standards Institution committees for both equestrian and automotive helmets. He worked on helmet testing in California with George Snively, of the American Snell Foundation, and was a member of the original PAS015 helmet committee, as well as that devising the European standard for equestrian headwear, which eventually became EN 1384 1996. Bill made a cross-country helmet for Princess Anne at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and designed the hat worn by her daughter, Zara Phillips, at the 2012 London Games. In 1981, one of his hats suffered two large cracks when Willie Carson was trampled by half a dozen horses in the Yorkshire Oaks, fracturing the base of the champion jockey’s skull, but it was credited with saving him from worse injuries – and an example of the many lives his protective headwear has saved.

FEBRUARY 2016 EQUESTRIAN TRADE NEWS

Professional Rider Winner: Ben Hobday Equilibrium Products praised the winner for his extremely hard work. “Adding Ben to our team of sponsored riders provided us with access to a new demographic, helping us to reach a new, young audience,” said the company. “Our sponsorship of him has led to a notable increase in our social media following and an increase in brand recognition.” Bill, who retired in 2012, was involved in BETA’s first safety training course and has been generous with his time and expertise over the years. He believes passionately about the safety of all riders and his advice is sought by BETA as well as many other hat manufacturers. Indirectly, Bill’s efforts have probably saved more lives than any other individual in the equestrian industry. “We know him as a quiet man who hides his light under a bushel, always working in the background, happy not to take the limelight, but passionate about improving protective headwear,” said BETA executive director Claire Williams.

Everything in its place

Therapy in transit

WHEN travelling to competitions, having a place for everything helps the whole process run smoothly. Noble Outfitters’ luggage range includes some useful pieces that can help your customers be more organised this season. The EquinEssential Tote is a generously sized grooming kit bag. The Noble Outfitters’ Bits 'n' Pieces Bridle Bag in black has a gold-coloured lining making the tack place inside easy to identify. With two heavy-duty, quick release Duraflex buckles to hold bridles in place, there’s also a large inside drop pocket and zip closure outside pocket for added storage. The Horseplay Backpack by Noble Outfitters works well as a ringside pack. In 600-denier polyester canvas fabric with water repellant finish, the heavy-duty interior is coated for easy care. Other features include a stretch water bottle pocket and a clip to secure a whip. There’s also an adjustable sternum strap for comfort when carrying the BackPack while walking a course. The RRP is £39.95. See page 25.

TOP show jumper Michael Whitaker has travelled more horses more miles than most. “Our horses lead a hectic lifestyle and it’s important to do everything we can to ensure their wellbeing,” he says. “I’ve tried all sorts of products on my horses over the years… Then Michael discovered Back on Track. “We use the mesh rugs and leg wraps on all the horses at home and for travelling to help their circulation,” he revealed. “They travel well and arrive relaxed and in good health. With Back on Track, the results are obvious.” So what’s the secret to keeping Michael’s precious string of horses in such good shape? Developed in Sweden, Back on Track products are made from Welltex fabric which is infused with ceramic particles. These cause long wave infra-red heat to radiate back towards the body. Among the positive responses to this are increased circulation which can relieve joint tension, maximise performance and help avoid injury. From Michael’s experience, Back on Track products clearly have a therapeutic value for horses travelling to and from competitions. The Travelling Leg Wraps are shaped for maximum protection and used under bandages. The Quick Wraps Royal provide gentle support to the legs, an added benefit when used after hard work. The Back on Track Mesh Rug is a versatile product that can be used all year round. It’s perfect for travelling thanks to its breathable qualities and the fabric’s benefits. It’s also ideal as a cooler and as an under-rug when extra warmth is required. And it’s great for warming up back muscles before work or to aid recuperation.

For versatile protection THIS versatile WeatherBeeta Fleece Cooler, with standard neck, is ideal for travelling, cooling or as an under rug. In stunning new designs, it will catch the eye in store too. The lightweight fleece fabric has an anti-pill finish to help prevent bobbling, while its wicking properties help keep your customers’ horses at a comfortable temperature as they dry off. Nylon overlay at the shoulders helps prevent stretching and rubbing. Other features are low cross surcingles, adjustable twin chest straps and a fillet string. There’s a great choice of colours; black/teal, grey stipe and slate/violet are all new. Navy/red/white is also available. The RRP is £39.99. A few more for the road

RETAI L TIP

• Anyone transporting horses shouldn’t leave home without a horse/human first aid kit, hay and water plus buckets, spare rugs, headcollars and leadropes, emergency breakdown cover, a trailer jack, torch and (by law) the horses’ passports. • Leather headcollars, provided they’re well maintained and fit properly, are comfortable, don’t get too hot and rarely rub. • A tail bandage or tail guard can help prevent rubbing and keep the top of the tail tidy – although it should never be too tight or left on too long. A tail bag keeps the long tail hairs clean. • Coolers and summer/fly sheets make great travelling rugs. Horses travelling together can quickly overheat in warm weather or when lacking good ventilation. • Boots, bandages or nothing? That’s the perennial debate when it comes to what’s best to put on horses’ legs for travelling. The retailer’s best bet is to stock boots and bandages – and suggest brushing boots, knee and hock boots plus overreach boots to an owner who’s worried about a restless traveller or difficult loader. • Small-holed haynets make forage last longer on a journey are less likely to get errant hooves caught in them. • There are several useful quick release ties available. Tidier than baler twine, they’re a safer option too. • Good ventilation, dust-free forage and bedding make for a healthier equine journey. EQUESTRIAN TRADE NEWS FEBRUARY 2016

How to be a happy tenant…

52

You’ve found the perfect premises for your business…but beware potential pitfalls before signing up to a lease, says Charlotte Spowage.

S

etting up and running a successful business is no easy challenge. Weeks can be spent securing funding, months on target market research and years on developing and honing your product or skill to stand out in the field. When the time comes to take on your own premises, it may feel like the final furlong; a last hurdle to be jumped as quickly as possible. Before signing on the dotted line, however, the prudent business owner should consider the potential perils, pitfalls and cost of signing up to a lease that might not be quite right for them. Although by no means a comprehensive list, the following key points may assist a tenant in finding the perfect premises:

The agent Although a hardworking professional, the agent is exactly that, an agent of the landlord. He or she will be trying to get the best deal for their client, not for you. Be wary of any agent that suggests that you sign a lease without taking independent legal advice and always remember: there’s no such thing as a ‘standard lease’, each lease can be tailored to reflect the agreement between the parties.

Planning permission Unless a property has the appropriate permissions or consents in place, it may not be able to be used for its intended purpose. Most leases specifically state that the landlord makes no warranty about the use of the property, so ensure the proper investigations are undertaken with the local authority at the outset. And, if you intend to change or expand the use of a property – for example from light industrial to retail - ensure you get the right advice before making any commitments to a lease.

Break clauses A lease is agreed with a longer term but the tenant is granted the option to break the lease and end its obligations on an earlier specified date, if it so chooses. It FEBRUARY 2016 EQUESTRIAN TRADE NEWS

should be noted that many break clauses contain multiple conditions that, if not strictly adhered to, mean the tenant cannot rely on the break clause and could find itself unexpectedly bound for the remainder of the lease term. There may also be Stamp Duty Land Tax implications for a longer lease too.

Repair and condition An FRI lease stands for ‘Fully Repairing and Insuring’ which means the tenant will bear the cost of both for the property. The tenant should be satisfied that the property is in an acceptable condition before the start of the lease as it could be required to hand the property back in an ‘as new’ condition to the landlord. A tenant may wish to ask for a ‘Schedule of Condition’ to formally record the state of a property at the start to limit this obligation.

Security of tenure The law states that (in most circumstances) a business in occupation under a lease has a right to renew its lease at the end of the term, but this statutory right can be excluded. If you are told that the offered lease is ‘contracted out’ or an ‘excluded lease’, it will likely mean that you will have no right to renew your lease unless the landlord agrees to offer you a new lease.

Guarantees

its obligations throughout the term of the lease and may request that a director of the company personally guarantees the company’s performance. Signing a guarantee is tantamount to signing the lease yourself. If the company fails to meet its obligations then the landlord can enforce them against the assets of the guarantor personally, including (in extreme situations) forcing the sale of a residential house or bankruptcy. Be wary before agreeing to give personal guarantees or, if unavoidable, seek to limit them to a fixed period at the start of the lease to allow the company to prove itself.
