TONY MCGRATH PRESENTS
THE FRENCH RIVIERA
Once upon a time, everyone called this glamorous stretch of Mediterranean coast the French Riviera; then in 1888 author Stéphen Liégeard dubbed it La Côte d’Azur, the name stuck and the rest is history.
The Côte d’Azur has always held a certain allure for me, with its sparkling Mediterranean waters, luxurious lifestyle, and deep history. When Marcy and I decided to spend some time there, I knew this trip would be special, blending relaxation, adventure, and a bit of indulgence. Here’s a personal account of our journey through one of the most glamorous regions in the world.
It’s years since I’ve visited Nice, and the grand dame of the Côte d’Azur has certainly had a facelift in the intervening time. The town’s grandiose squares have been repaved, frontages repainted and a new tram system has gone some way to calming the gridlocked traffic. Palm trees billow in the breeze; on the Promenade des Anglais, neat lines of deckchairs are all taken, rows of faces tipped towards the sun. After the grey drizzle of London, it’s like stepping into an Insta-filtered world; a riot of colour and life.
You can take a couple of hours and drop off what seemed like a cliff to find the hidden treasure of Villefranche-sur-mer and where we sat under a colourful cafe canopy to enjoy drinks watching the pouring rain.
SO VERY RIVIERA !
And yet Nice has somehow dropped off the radar in recent years, its old-school glamour superseded by edgier, hipper weekend break destinations in eastern Europe and Spain. But the Victorians who first made the resort famous in the mid-19th century weren’t wrong.
Alongside the rash of five-star hotels and Michelin-starred eateries, there are plenty of affordable places to stay and good cheap eats, giving the town a more bohemian, youthful air than its grander sibling, Cannes, just up the coast.
CANNES IS GLITZ, GLAMOUR, AND A GLIMPSE OF THE PAST
Arriving in Cannes, we couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement. The city lives up to its reputation, with its grand hotels, designer boutiques, and endless rows of palm trees lining the Boulevard de la Croisette. Marcy and I started our day with a stroll along this famous boulevard, taking in the sights and sounds of a city that knows how to do luxury.
CANNES,
MONACO & MONTE CARLO
As much as I enjoyed the chic atmosphere, what really caught my attention was the old quarter of Le Suquet. We wandered through the narrow streets, lined with traditional Provencal houses, and climbed to the top of the hill to soak in the panoramic views of Cannes and the Mediterranean. The city looked incredible from up there, and I couldn’t help but admire the blend of history and modernity.
Monaco was pure indulgence. There’s no other way to describe it. I’d always dreamed of visiting the Monte Carlo Casino, and stepping into that world of high stakes and elegance was everything I imagined. I could walk the roadways of its formula one street race track and almost smell the burnt rubber and hear the unmistakable scream of high powered race engines drowning out the roar of the crowd.
And the boats…it’s a city just dripping with opulence.
Arriving in St. Tropez by local ferry is a breathtaking experience, as the glittering azure waters of the Mediterranean frame the charming pastel-colored buildings that line the harbor. As your boat approaches, the sight of luxury yachts moored alongside traditional fishing boats creates a dynamic contrast, capturing the very essence of this place of a thousand dreams
As you wander into the heart of town, the narrow, winding streets of La Ponche, the historic old quarter, invite you home. The charming blend of cobblestones, vibrant shutters, and cascading bougainvillea lends an authentic Provençal feel to this glamorous destination.
You might stumble upon a small local market selling fresh produce, cheese, and flowers, or a boutique offering chic Riviera-style clothing and gaggles of giggling American instagram girls.
COURS MASSÉNA, CÔTE D’AZUR & MENTON
Antibes was like dessert after the main course of Nice - time to relax and stroll. The food market at the Cours Masséna, is full of local flavors, from fresh produce to artisanal cheeses, olives, and baked goods. The vibrant colours and aromas are truly intoxicating and everything quintessentially south of France.
Exploring the Old Town Square, with its narrow streets and charming atmosphere, give you a true taste of the Côte d’Azur to just sit and people watch over an expresso and of course a croissant.
Arriving in Menton by train is a serene experience. As the train glides along the Mediterranean coastline, the azure sea seems to stretch endlessly, framed by lush green hills. When the train slows down and pulls into the station, you’re greeted by the warm pastel colors of this quaint French town near the Italian border.
Hopping out onto the platform feels like stepping into a postcard with a short walk bringing you to the heart
of Menton. The streets are narrow and winding, lined with colorful buildings in shades of yellow, peach, and terracotta. The town’s Italian influence is evident in the architecture and atmosphere. Wandering through the Old Town you find hidden alleys leading to unexpected squares where locals enjoy their espresso.
Menton is a place to explore slowly, savoring the mix of French and Italian cultures, whether you’re sampling local delicacies like Socca (chickpea flatbread) or sipping a glass of rosé at a seaside café.
Please visit in the spring or late summer and fall when the locals re-emerge after the mayhem of summer tourism.
Oh la Côte d’Azur Je T’aime.

HANNAH THOMAS
In our fast-paced world, where technology and remote work have become the norm, especially since the good old Covid days, the concept of a home office has evolved from a simple desk and chair to a dedicated space that fosters productivity, creativity, and enjoyment.
Designing a home office that is both functional and inviting is essential for those seeking a stylish yet comfortable work environment.
Whether you work from home full-time or simply need a space for occasional tasks, creating a home office that is both fun and classy is key to boosting productivity and overall wellbeing. When it comes to high-end home office design, incorporating luxurious materials and sophisticated finishes can elevate the space to new heights.
Start by choosing a color scheme that reflects your personal style while promoting focus and creativity. Consider using a neutral palette of whites, creams, and soft beiges as a base, then add pops of color either muted or vibrant tones with your accent pieces and artwork.
This will infuse a sense of fun and energy into the space. Incorporating rich textures like velvet, silk, or leather can add a touch of luxury and warmth to the room, creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.
When selecting furniture for your high-end home office, opt for pieces that are both stylish and functional. A sleek and modern desk made from high-quality materials such as solid wood or metal can serve as the centerpiece of the room, while a comfortable and ergonomic chair is essential for long hours of work. Consider adding a plush area rug or luxurious draperies to soften the space and add a touch of elegance. Floating shelves or custom-built cabinetry can provide ample storage for books, files, and office supplies while keeping the room organized, clutter-free and most
importantly it creates a great backdrop for a zoom call if styled correctly.
Lighting is another crucial element in home office design, as proper lighting can make a significant impact on productivity and mood.
Incorporate a mix of overhead lighting, task lighting, and ambient lighting to create a well-lit space that is both functional and inviting. Consider adding a statement chandelier or a sleek desk lamp to add a touch of sophistication and style to the room. Natural light is also essential for a healthy and inspiring work environment, so be sure to position your desk near a window to maximize sunlight and outdoor views.
To add a touch of fun and personality to your high-end home office, consider incorporating unique artwork, decorative accessories, or stylish technology gadgets. Choose pieces that reflect your interests and passions, whether it’s a vintage typewriter, a gallery wall of inspirational quotes, or a stylish Bluetooth speaker.
Adding a touch of greenery with potted plants or fresh flowers can also bring life and freshness to the space, creating a calming and inviting atmosphere. In conclusion, designing a high-end home office that is both functional, inviting, and comfortable, while also being fun and classy, is a rewarding endeavor that can enhance your work experience and elevate your home environment.
By incorporating luxurious materials, sophisticated finishes, stylish furniture, and personal touches, you can create a space that inspires creativity, promotes productivity, and reflects your unique style and personality. With careful planning and attention to detail, you can design a home office that is truly a reflection of your taste and lifestyle, making it a pleasure to work in every day.
SARAH MCALLISTER A STATELY SIT-DOWN WITH
BUILDING A MOVEMENT, ONE CLEAN HOME AT A TIME
When you think of Sarah McAllister, two things might come to mind: her sparkling clean homes and her infectiously down-to-earth personality. The founder of GoCleanCo and the leader of the unstoppable #CleaningArmy, Sarah has turned a passion for cleaning into a thriving global brand that’s equal parts educational and inspirational. But beyond the viral tips and hilarious Instagram stories, Sarah’s story is one of resilience, family, and a genuine desire to help people live better, calmer lives.
EARLY HUSTLES AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Sarah’s entrepreneurial journey began long before she became synonymous with powdered Tide and bleach. Growing up in Canada, she was always driven to make
things happen for herself. “I’ve always loved the hustle,” Sarah laughs. “As a teen, I started small businesses just to see what I could create. I learned so much—what worked, what didn’t, and how to pivot when things got tough.”
From walking dogs to teaching yoga, and even working in salons and restaurants, Sarah tried her hand at it all. These early experiences weren’t just about earning money—they were about building the foundations of a future empire. “Working in service taught me about people. You can learn so much from serving others, and those lessons still guide me today.”
THE SPARK OF GOCLEANCO
The idea for GoCleanCo came at a time when Sarah was looking for something fulfilling that aligned with her values. “I’ve always believed a clean home equals a clear

mind,” she says. “I wanted to share that idea with others, but in a way that felt approachable and fun—not overwhelming.”
It was during the pandemic that her business truly skyrocketed. “People were stuck at home, looking for ways to make their spaces feel better.
I started sharing tips, and before I knew it, the #CleaningArmy was born.” With practical advice, a touch of sass, and a commitment to making cleaning feel less like a chore, Sarah built a community of millions who connected with her authentic approach.
HER CLEANING PHILOSOPHY: ‘BLEACH, PRAY, LOVE’
Sarah’s mantra—“Bleach, Pray, Love”—is more than just a catchy tagline; it’s a way of life. She believes cleaning isn’t just about scrubbing dirt—it’s about creating a space that nurtures and supports you. “A clean home isn’t about perfection,” she explains. “It’s about empowerment. When your space is in order, your mind is too. You feel calmer, more in control.”
Her tips are a mix of the old-school wisdom passed down from her mum and grandma and

her own modern twists. Powdered Tide and bleach are staples in her arsenal, but so is her belief in tackling one room at a time and letting go of clutter that no longer serves you.
FAMILY FIRST
Despite her success, Sarah’s most cherished role is that of mom to her daughter. “Everything I do is for her,” Sarah says. “She’s my why.” Balancing motherhood with a global brand isn’t always easy, but Sarah is determined to show her daughter the value of hard work and the importance of family. “I bring my notes to swim practice. I answer emails at odd hours.
But I’m there for the little moments, and that’s what matters most.”
Her family has always been a cornerstone of her life, influencing both her values and her work ethic. “I learned to clean from my mum and grandma. They taught me not just how to scrub a floor but how to find joy in it. Those lessons have shaped everything I do.”
MILESTONES AND MAGIC MOMENTS
Sarah’s career has been filled with “pinch-me” moments. From being featured on Martha Stewart’s
website (a lifelong dream) to becoming a top Amazon seller with her cleaning guides, every milestone is a testament to her authenticity and hard work. “Meeting fans in real life is always surreal,” she admits.
“People tell me how I’ve changed their lives, and I’m just blown away. I’m grateful every single day.”
She’s also passionate about using her platform for good, supporting charities and helping families in need. “I don’t do it for attention—I do it because it feels right. Helping people is at the heart of everything I do.”
CLEANING HACKS THAT WORK WONDERS
For those looking to channel their inner #CleaningArmy recruit, Sarah has plenty of tips to share:
Powdered Tide: “It’s a game-changer. It cleans floors, counters, laundry—you name it.”
Declutter First: “You can’t clean what you can’t see. Start with the mess.”
Set Small Goals: “Don’t try to clean the whole house in a day. Break it down, and you’ll feel so much more accomplished.”
The Tineco Vacuum-Mop Combo: “It’s like magic. I don’t know how I lived without it.”
“MEETING FANS IN REAL LIFE IS ALWAYS SURREAL, PEOPLE TELL ME HOW I’VE CHANGED THEIR LIVES, AND I’M JUST BLOWN AWAY. I’M GRATEFUL EVERY SINGLE DAY.”
HOLIDAY MAGIC, GOCLEANCO STYLE
“You can’t decorate dirty.”
HOLIDAY HOSTING WITHOUT THE HEADACHES
DECK THE HALLS, BUT DUST THEM FIRST
Sarah’s holiday mantra is simple: “You can’t decorate dirty.” Before the garlands go up and the fairy lights are strung, Sarah encourages her followers to take stock of their spaces. “Clean your baseboards, dust the mantle, and tackle those neglected nooks,” she advises. “Your festive decor will shine even brighter against a clean backdrop.”
For a stress-free holiday season, Sarah suggests creating a cleaning schedule. “Divide your tasks into manageable chunks so you’re not deep-cleaning the kitchen on Christmas Eve,” she says. “Set aside a day for the living room, another for the guest bedroom. By the time the holidays roll around, you’ll be able to actually enjoy them.”
Hosting family and friends can be daunting, but Sarah’s approach makes it a breeze. Her advice?
Focus on high-impact areas like the kitchen, bathrooms, and entryway.
“Your guests won’t care if your linen closet is immaculate,” she laughs. “But they will notice a sparkling sink and a clean, welcoming atmosphere.”
One of Sarah’s holiday cleaning hacks is to stockpile essentials. “Keep plenty of hand soap, toilet paper, and fresh towels on hand for guests. Oh, and don’t forget to run the dishwasher before the party starts!”
CHRISTMAS TREE CLEANING HACK
Yes, Sarah even has a tip for your Christmas tree. “If you’ve got a real tree, give it a good shake outside to get rid of loose needles before bringing it in. And for fake trees, use a handheld vacuum or lint roller to clean dust off the branches. It makes a world of difference!”
SARAH’S FESTIVE CLEANING SURVIVAL KIT
Sarah’s must-haves for holiday cleaning include:
POWDERED TIDE: “It’s my ride-or-die, even during the holidays. Use it for everything from cleaning floors to scrubbing the bathroom before guests arrive.”
MICROFIBRE CLOTHS: “Perfect for polishing mirrors and wiping down surfaces.”
LINT ROLLERS: “A lifesaver for pet owners, especially if your dog thinks the sofa is their throne.”
BAKING SODA & VINEGAR: “Got a burnt pot from holiday cooking? This duo works wonders.”
FAMILY, FUN, AND FESTIVE MEMORIES
For Sarah, the holidays are about more than just a clean home—they’re about creating a warm, joyful space for her family. “Christmas morning at my house is chaos,” she admits with a grin. “Wrapping paper everywhere, mugs of hot cocoa, and a kitchen full of half-eaten cookies. But that’s the good stuff, isn’t it? That’s what makes a house a home.”
And while she’s busy cleaning and decorating like the rest of us, Sarah never loses sight of what’s most important: time with her loved ones. “A clean home is great, but a happy, messy family moment? That’s priceless.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR SARAH MCALLISTER?
As Sarah McAllister looks ahead, her plans are as ambitious as they are inspiring. With her cleaning empire continuing to grow, Sarah is diving into exciting new projects that will bring her closer to her #CleaningArmy than ever before.
A revamped website is on the horizon, promising to be a hub for all things GoCleanCo—think expanded cleaning guides, interactive resources, and a few surprises along the way.
Sarah is also focusing on consulting with and investing in startups, using her vast business knowledge to help others achieve success. “It’s something I’ve always loved doing, but now I’m able to do it on a much larger scale,” she says. With exciting projects already
in the works for 2025 and 2026, Sarah’s dedication to empowering others is stronger than ever.
“I’m always looking for new ways to connect with my community and help them feel empowered in their homes,” she shares. “It’s not just about cleaning—it’s about creating calm and comfort in your life.”

A NEW BEGINNING IN DISGUISE
DIVORCE
THE WORD “DIVORCE” OFTEN STIRS UP IMAGES OF ENDINGS—SHADOWED BY NEGATIVITY, STRUGGLE, AND GRIEF. BUT IN TODAY’S WORLD, IS IT TIME WE START CHANGING THAT NARRATIVE?
Given that nearly 50% of marriages end in divorce, with 1.55 million divorced women and 1.23 million divorced men across Canada in 2022 (according to Statista), it’s worth reconsidering how we view this life event. Half of us will experience it, so why does divorce still carry the stigma it did decades ago?
As a woman who has been through divorce and found happiness in remarriage, I can attest to the many silver linings it can offer. I’m not suggesting that divorce is something to strive for—no one enters marriage with the goal of ending it. But I am here to encourage a shift in perspective.
Divorce doesn’t have to be seen as purely a loss. For many, it can be one of the most transform ative and life-changing experiences, a pivotal moment that shapes everything that comes next.
If you’ve gone through or are currently navigating divorce, I invite you to consider the silver linings that might emerge from this new chapter.
A NEW BEGINNING, NOT JUST AN ENDING
Yes, divorce is an ending, but it’s also a powerful new beginning. This is your opportunity to start fresh, to rebuild your life on your own terms. Divorce offers the chance to create a future you choose for yourself. What will you do with this new opportunity?
THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE
Who are you? What do you want? Where do you want to go? These are questions many of us haven’t asked ourselves in years. Divorce gives you the freedom to rediscover yourself and recreate the life of your dreams. It’s a gift of choice—total freedom to shape your own path. Take it and make the most of it.
REDEFINING RELATIONSHIPS AND INTIMACY
There’s no better time to learn about yourself in relationships than after divorce. Reflect on what worked and what didn’t. What red flags will you never ignore again?
What new boundaries will you set? Divorce is a unique opportunity to redefine love and intimacy, empowering you to call in the kind of relationship you’ve always wanted.
INCREASED EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE
Few things make you stronger than surviving a divorce—especially a tumultuous one. Coming out the other side, you’ll know more about yourself and what you deserve than ever before. Use that knowledge to fuel the next chapter of your life, knowing your worth and accepting nothing less.
FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT AND INDEPENDENCE
While divorce can bring financial stress, it can also be a catalyst for financial independence. Many of us grow complacent or dependent in marriage, and divorce forces us to become more financially savvy.
It’s an opportunity to take control of your financial future and build a secure, independent life.
IMPROVED MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELLNESS
For many, divorce marks the end of years—sometimes decades—of unhealthy emotional or physical patterns. Breaking free from these can spark a renewed focus on mental health and self-care. Hitting rock bottom can sometimes lead to the greatest rise, and divorce may be the push you need to prioritize your well-being.
BREAKING THE STIGMA FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
We have the power to change the narrative for future generations. Divorce doesn’t have to be
shadowed in shame. Let’s teach future couples that striving for healthy relationships is essential, but so is knowing when it’s time to let go. Divorce isn’t the worst thing that can happen—in fact, it might just be the best opportunity to start over, this time on your terms.
A SECOND CHANCE AT LOVE
Divorce doesn’t have to signal the end of love. In fact, it can open the door to a new, more aligned relationship—one that feels more fulfilling and exciting than ever before. You’ve grown, and so will the person you attract. You deserve the love you crave, and this new chapter might just bring you closer to it than ever before.
Divorce is undoubtedly difficult, but it’s also an invitation to embrace new opportunities, growth, and yes, even more joy than you could have ever guessed. If you’re going through it now, keep your heart and mind open—you may just find that your best chapter is about to begin.

A STATELY CONVERSATION WITH
ROBERT WALTON (MBE)
The Art of Hospitality and the Business of Elegance
By Emma Lindsey | Editor-in-Chief, Stately Magazine
AN AFTERNOON AT LANGDON COURT
Nestled in the rolling Devonshire countryside, Langdon Court is a property that defies time—a historic Elizabethan manor reborn through the vision of Robert Walton MBE and Donna Ida Thornton. Their thoughtful restoration fuses heritage with modern sophistication, crafting a haven where the past meets quiet luxury.
Over an intimate afternoon in the estate’s oak-panelled drawing room, I sit down with Robert and Donna to discuss their remarkable journey. As industry icons in hospitality and fashion, they have created not just a destination, but a legacy defined by beauty, authenticity, and excellence.
ROBERT WALTON MBE: THE ARCHITECT OF EXPERIENCE
Robert Walton MBE Aka The Godfather of Hospitality is a name synonymous with British hospitality. His career spans decades of leadership in the culinary world, most notably as President of the Restaurant Association of Great Britain. Yet, when speaking about his career, it’s clear his passion goes beyond accolades—it’s rooted in connection and storytelling.
“When I think back on my career, it’s always been about creating connections,” Robert shares, his tone measured but passionate.
“Whether through food, events, or spaces like Langdon Court, it’s about making people feel something—joy, comfort, or even a sense of wonder.”
His professional journey has been defined by a commitment to craftsmanship and an unparalleled eye
for detail. Langdon Court is the pinnacle of his career—a project where he can apply his deep understanding of hospitality to an entirely unique canvas.
“It’s a privilege to be a custodian of something so historic,” he reflects. “But it’s also a responsibility to ensure it evolves while respecting its roots.”
His approach is anchored in the belief that true luxury is found in experiences that feel effortless yet deeply intentional—an ethos woven into every corner of Langdon Court.
DONNA IDA THORNTON: DESIGN WITH PURPOSE
Donna Ida Thornton is best known as the “Jean Queen,” having transformed denim into a statement of style, fit, and confidence for women. But stepping into Langdon Court reveals another facet of her creative genius—her mastery of interior design, where aesthetics become immersive experiences.
“Langdon Court felt like an extension of my brand ethos,” she explains. “It’s about creating something timeless yet relevant—a place where people feel both comfortable and inspired.”
The manor’s interiors reflect Donna’s celebrated sense of style: muted, classic palettes layered with textures and luxurious
materials. Period furnishings are paired with contemporary accents in a way that feels intimate yet refined. Every object, from custom-upholstered armchairs to restored fireplaces, is a deliberate nod to the estate’s storied past.
“Every corner of Langdon Court tells a story,” She continues. “It’s our job to ensure that story continues to be told, beautifully and authentically.”
THE SOUL OF LANGDON COURT
For Robert and Donna, Langdon Court is much more than a business—it’s a shared love affair with history, design, and hospitality. They speak about the property not as owners, but as its stewards.
“We fell in love with the place the moment we saw it,” Robert says, his voice tinged with emotion. “Its beauty, its history—it spoke to us on so many levels.”
Their restoration of Langdon Court required balancing historical preservation with modern luxury—a demanding process that required patience, vision, and determination. But for Robert and Donna, every challenge was a labour of love.
“”
“It’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about the soul of the place. We want people to feel that when they walk through the doors.”
“It’s not just about aesthetics,” Donna asserts. “It’s about the soul of the place. We want people to feel that when they walk through the doors.”
The results speak for themselves: Langdon Court is not only a retreat but an experience crafted with care, elegance, and authenticity.
“There’s no shortcut to excellence,” Robert adds with quiet certainty. “But the results make it all worthwhile.”
LIFE BEYOND LANGDON
Despite their full schedules at Langdon Court, Robert and Donna continue to shape their respective industries.
Robert’s deep-rooted passion for culinary arts finds expression through exclusive dining events and industry mentorship. Meanwhile, Donna continues to expand her eponymous fashion brand while championing female entrepreneurs—a cause close to her heart.
Yet, even with thriving careers, home remains their sanctuary. Their private residence, often featured in top-tier lifestyle publications, is a reflection of their shared love for craftsmanship, design, and personal comfort.
“Home is where we recharge,” Donna says with warmth. “It’s where we dream, plan, and just be ourselves.”
THE NEXT CHAPTER: WHAT’S AHEAD FOR LANGDON COURT
Looking ahead, Robert and Donna’s vision for Langdon Court extends beyond its present acclaim. Under their leadership, the estate is set to become one of Britain’s most coveted luxury destinations—a living embodiment of heritage, artistry, and experience.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE INCLUDE:
Exclusive Experiences: Private wine tastings with top local vineyards, intimate culinary weekends, and curated wellness retreats designed to restore and inspire.
Bespoke Events: Langdon Court will continue to serve as a sought-after venue for iconic weddings, elegant celebrations, and high-profile corporate retreats.
Local Collaborations: A deep commitment to Devon’s creative community through partnerships with local artisans, producers, and chefs.
“We’re not just creating a destination,” Robert explains. “We’re building a legacy.”
“”
“We’re not just creating a destination, we’re building a legacy.”
LOOKING FORWARD: A LEGACY IN THE MAKING
As our conversation draws to a close, I ask what comes next for the couple on a personal level. Their answers are as thoughtful as the vision they’ve crafted for Langdon Court.
“We’re exploring the idea of hosting more international culinary events,” Robert reveals. “Bringing people together over exceptional food is what I’m most passionate about, and there’s so much more we can do.”
Donna’s plans are equally ambitious. With her next fashion collection already in progress, she remains dedicated to crafting timeless, empowering pieces for modern women.
“The goal is to create pieces that empower women to feel confident and comfortable,” she says with signature determination.
But Langdon Court remains at the heart of their shared dream.
“We want it to be more than just a venue,” Donna reflects. “It’s a place where memories are made.”

FINAL THOUGHT: A LIVING LEGACY
Langdon Court is far more than a luxury retreat—it’s a tribute to craftsmanship, creativity, and legacy. Under Robert and Donna’s guidance, the estate has been reimagined into something timeless—a place where history is honoured, stories are created, and experiences linger long after the stay ends.
As we say our goodbyes, Donna leaves me with one final thought:
“Langdon Court isn’t just ours—it belongs to everyone who steps through its doors. That’s what makes it so special.”
With a passion for excellence and a shared vision for the future, Robert Walton MBE and Donna Ida Thornton have not just restored a landmark— they’ve created an enduring legacy that promises to inspire for generations to come.

BEATS & GOATS CHEESE
SALAD
INGREDIENTS
1 cup semi-pearled farro
Kosher salt
1 garlic clove, finely grated
4 oz. fresh goat cheese, crumbled
1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt
2 tsp. honey
Freshly ground pepper
1 fennel bulb, fronds reserved, halved, cored, shaved or thinly sliced
5 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
1 lb. prepared cooked beets (such as Love Beets), cut into large wedges
Beets and goat cheese are a classic combination, but this salad is anything but retro. Shaved fennel (use a mandoline if you have one and reserve the springy green fronds for garnish) and hearty farro make it feel like a full meal. The creamy dressing swoosh on the bottom—here’s where the goat cheese comes in—adds richness and a little tang.
Precooked beets, which you can find in the produce department, make this recipe a flash to put together. If you have the time, feel free to steam or roast beets from raw yourself. Either way, be sure to add them to the salad last and fold everything together gently, to keep from dyeing the whole thing pink.
METHOD
STEP 1
Cook 1 cup semi-pearled farro in a large pot of boiling salted water until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain.
STEP 2
Meanwhile, mash 1 garlic clove, finely grated, 4 oz. fresh goat cheese, crumbled, 1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt, and 2 tsp. honey in a small bowl with a fork until mostly smooth; season with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper. (If you would like a smoother sauce, blend in a tall container with an immersion blender). Set dressing aside.
STEP 3
Toss farro, 1 fennel bulb, fronds reserved, halved, cored, shaved or thinly sliced, 5 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar, and 3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil in a large bowl to combine; season with salt and pepper. Gently toss in 1 lb. prepared cooked beets, cut into large wedges, just before serving (this will prevent them from dyeing the fennel pink).
STEP 4
Spread reserved dressing over a platter or individual plates, creating swirls and swooshes. Mound salad on top; scatter fennel fronds over and season with more pepper.
BRISKET BOURGUIGNON
SERVES 8-10
DIFFICULTY 6/10 METHOD
MINUTES 45 minutes (plus 4 hours for braising)
INGREDIENTS
1 Small bunch thyme
5 Sprigs parsley, plus chopped leaves for serving
2 Bay leaves
1 4-lb. piece untrimmed flat-cut beef brisket, excess fat trimmed
6 tsp. Diamond Crystal or 3½ tsp. Morton kosher salt, divided
Freshly ground pepper, 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
4oz. bacon (about 4 slices), coarsely chopped
8 oz. crimini mushrooms, halved, quartered if large
1 large carrot, peeled, coarsely chopped
2 cups frozen pearl onions (from a 14.4-oz. bag), thawed
5 garlic cloves, smashed, 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
2 Tbsp. tomato paste, 3 cups dry red wine 3½ cups low-sodium beef broth
PREPERATION
Brisket may not be a quick weeknight option, but if you have 5 hours (mostly hands-off!) to spare, it’s a perfect choice for a crowd-pleasing, comforting meal.
This recipe takes the braise-ready cut and pairs it with the flavors of a classic French beef stew, making it a holiday-worthy dish that’s perfect with mashed potatoes and soft milk bread buns.
As it cooks, the brisket becomes wonderfully tender while still sliceable, and the add-ins—mushrooms, carrots, frozen pearl onions, and crispy bacon, cooked separately—keep their shape and texture.
It’s a one-pot, mostly hands-off dish you’ll come back to for every special occasion.
STEP 1
Place a rack in lowest position of oven; preheat to 350°. Tie 1 small bunch thyme, 5 sprigs parsley, and 2 bay leaves together with kitchen twine; set aside. Sprinkle one 4-lb. piece untrimmed flat-cut beef brisket, excess fat trimmed, all over with 4 tsp. Diamond Crystal or 2½ tsp. Morton kosher salt; season generously with freshly ground pepper.
STEP 2
Heat 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil in a large Dutch oven or other heavy pot over medium-high. Cook brisket until well browned, about 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a platter. Pour fat in pot into a small bowl, then add 1 Tbsp. back to pot; set remaining fat aside.
STEP 3
Cook 4 oz. bacon (about 4 slices), coarsely chopped, in same pot, stirring occasionally, until browned and crisp, about 4 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer bacon to a medium bowl. Pour off fat into bowl with reserved fat; add 2 Tbsp. back to pot.
STEP 4
Cook 8 oz. crimini mushrooms, halved, quartered if large, 1 large carrot, peeled, coarsely chopped, 2 cups frozen pearl onions (from a 14.4-oz. bag), thawed, and 1 tsp. Diamond Crystal or ½ tsp. Morton kosher salt in pot, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened and browned, 6–8 minutes. Transfer to bowl with bacon; set aside.
STEP 5
Add 2 Tbsp. fat to pot. Cook 5 garlic cloves, smashed, stirring often, 30 seconds. Stir in 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour and cook, stirring constantly, 30 seconds. Add 2 Tbsp. tomato paste and cook, stirring often, until slightly darkened in color, about 2 minutes. Pour in 3 cups dry red wine, scraping up any browned bits stuck to the bottom of pot with a wooden spoon. Bring to a boil and cook until wine is reduced by a third, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 3½ cups low-sodium beef broth and remaining 1 tsp. Diamond Crystal or ½ tsp. Morton kosher salt. Carefully return brisket to pot, arranging fat side up; tuck reserved herb bundle alongside.
STEP 6
Cover pot and transfer to oven. Braise brisket, spooning braising liquid over a few times, 3½ hours. Uncover pot, remove and discard herb bundle, and stir in reserved bacon and vegetables. Return pot to oven and cook, uncovered, until brisket is deeply browned and very tender, 30–40 minutes. Let cool slightly.
STEP 7
Transfer brisket to a cutting board and slice against the grain. Skim fat from surface of braising liquid if needed, then return brisket to pot. Top with chopped parsley leaves just before serving.
CRANBERRY-ORANGE CHUTNEY
INGREDIENTS
1 small navel orange
2 whole cloves
1 3”-long cinnamon stick
1 14-oz. can whole-berry cranberry sauce
½ tsp. Diamond Crystal or ¼ tsp. Morton kosher salt
½ tsp. freshly ground pepper Brie, crackers, and olives (for serving)
STEP 1
Canned cranberry sauce might often be associated with holiday fare, but this ingredient boasts versatility that extends well beyond festive seasons, making it a valuable addition to year-round cooking. Whole canned cranberries, orange juice, cinnamon, cloves, and orange peels, are combined to make a jammy cranberry chutney with subtle tang, comforting warmth, and a vibrant citrus burst. Whether spooned over cheese, layered in a sandwich, or blended into a smoothie, this flavorful sauce is guaranteed to be a hit all year round.
PREPERATION
Remove two 3”-long strips of zest from 1 small navel orange with a vegetable peeler; fold each strip in half and pierce with a clove to seal. Cut orange in half and squeeze juice into a measuring glass until you have ¼ cup.
STEP 2
Bring orange zest with 2 whole cloves, orange juice, one 3”-long cinnamon stick, one 14-oz. can whole-berry cranberry sauce, ½ tsp. Diamond Crystal or ¼ tsp. Morton kosher salt, and ½ tsp. freshly ground pepper to a boil in a small saucepan. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, 10–15 minutes. Let cool.
STEP 3
Arrange Brie, crackers, and olives on a platter; spoon chutney over Brie.
NO-FAIL ROAST CHICKEN WITH LEMON AND GARLIC
INGREDIENTS
1 lemon
1 head of garlic
¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter or extra-virgin olive oil
1 3½–4 lb. whole chicken
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
This easy roast chicken recipe proves there’s nothing better than a beautifully browned bird with buttery, garlicky pan juices.
Though cooking a whole chicken may seem intimidating, this foolproof method makes it simple—no trussing required. Your cast iron skillet or a mid-size baking dish works perfectly, and an instant-read thermometer ensures you get it right every time (aim for 160°F at the thigh).
Lemon, garlic, and melted butter give the chicken flavor and crispy skin, with no need for basting. For extra flavor, add fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary to the cavity before roasting. Pair with a baguette and green salad for a perfect Sunday dinner.
NO-FAIL ROAST CHICKEN WITH LEMON AND GARLIC
PREPERATION
STEP 1
Arrange a rack in the center of your oven, and preheat to 425°. Cut 1 lemon in half crosswise and remove any visible seeds.
STEP 2
Cut 1 head of garlic in half crosswise. (If it falls apart a bit, don’t sweat it.)
Two hands cutting a head of garlic in half.
STEP 3
Melt ½ stick butter in a small saucepan or microwave in a small bowl.
STEP 4
Place 1 3–4-lb. whole chicken on a cutting board (best to use a plastic one you can sterilize). A word on bird size. A 3–4-lb. chicken is pretty much the ideal size for roasting this way. Something a little bit bigger will work, but once you get much past 4½-lbs. it becomes harder to guarantee that the breast meat won’t dry out in the time it takes the dark meat to cook. Pat the whole thing dry with paper towels. It’s super important to get the chicken as dry as possible, which helps with browning.
STEP 5
With chicken breast facing up and legs pointing toward you, use a sharp knife to slice through loose area of skin connecting the leg and breast, making about a 3”-long incision. Continue cutting downward until you hit the joint that connects the thigh to the body, then stop (once you get through the skin, there’s not much there; if you are cutting through flesh, you’re too close to the breast). This exposes the leg joint, making it easy to tell if chicken is cooked. Repeat on second side.
STEP 6
Season every surface of chicken, including skin along backbone, inside cavity, under wings, and inside part of the leg you just exposed, with lots of salt and pepper. If you’re using kosher salt, it should take you 4–5 generous—as in, four finger—pinches, which will be around 4 whole teaspoons.
STEP 7
Transfer chicken breast side up to a large oven-safe skillet. Arrange lemon and garlic cut sides down in skillet around chicken.
STEP 8
Drizzle chicken all over with melted butter (mmmmmmm) and transfer to oven.
STEP 9
Roast until chicken is nicely browned and cooked through, checking for doneness after 45 minutes. To check, carefully remove skillet from oven (the handle is hot!), poke a knife into leg joints, and pierce the meat. If juices run clear, the chicken is done. If you see a rosy pink color, it needs more time. Continue to roast, checking every 5 minutes, until juices run clear. (If you’re not sure, you can also use the knife to lightly shred some of the meat along the thigh bone—the meat should look opaque and the fibers should separate easily.)
STEP 10
Let chicken rest in skillet at least 15 minutes before carving—this will help the juices in the meat to settle, and will also get it down to a temperature that is cool enough to handle with your bare hands while carving. Don’t worry: It’s a big piece of meat, so it will still be plenty warm by the time you serve it. Transfer chicken to a platter. Pour all of those glorious, buttery pan juices over top of the meat and serve with roasted lemon and garlic alongside. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
APPLE BUTTER
INGREDIENTS
lb. mixed sweet and tart apples, unpeeled, uncored, chopped
6 cups unsweetened apple cider
1 cup raw or white granulated sugar or light brown sugar
1 3” cinnamon stick
3 whole cloves
½ sp. Diamond Crystal or ¼ tsp. Morton’s kosher salt
1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
This homemade apple butter is perfect for using up extra apples from your orchard trip. It’s a great topping for French toast, waffles, muffins, cakes, ice cream, or even pork chops—and it makes your home smell like an orchard.
To get the best consistency and flavor, start on the stovetop and finish in the oven. Use a mix of tart and sweet apples, like Granny Smith, Fuji, and Honeycrisp. No need to peel or core them—the skins add flavor, and the cores help it set. You can customize the spices too, using whole cinnamon, cloves, or even allspice, cardamom, or lemon zest.
If you prefer applesauce, stop after running the mixture through a sieve. Otherwise, cook it in the oven until it’s dark, thick, and reduced by half. Enjoy!
PREPERATION
Step 1
Bring 6 lb. mixed sweet and tart apples, unpeeled, uncored, chopped, 6 cups apple cider, 1 cup raw or white granulated sugar, or light brown sugar, one 3” cinnamon stick, 3 whole cloves, and ½ tsp. Diamond Crystal or ¼ tsp. Morton’s kosher salt to a boil in a large wide pot. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated and apples are very soft, 1–1½ hours.
Step 2
Discard cinnamon stick. Pass apple mixture through the fine disk of a food mill, or strain through a coarse-mesh sieve, pressing with a rubber spatula. Discard peel, seeds, and cloves.
Step 3
Preheat oven to 350°. Transfer apple mixture to a 13x9” baking pan and bake, stirring every 30 minutes, until reduced by half and very thick and dark amber, 1½–2 hours. Stir in 1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar or lemon juice; let cool in pan.
SERVES 4 CUPS MINUTES 3½ hours
DIFFICULTY 2/10 METHOD
SWEET POTATO CAKE
WITH SALTED CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
INGREDIENTS
1½ lb. sweet potatoes (about 4 medium), scrubbed
Nonstick vegetable oil spray (for pans)
3¼ cups (374 g) cake flour, plus more for pans
2 tsp. baking powder
1½ tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
½ tsp. Diamond Crystal or ¼ tsp. Morton kosher salt
1½ cups (300 g) granulated sugar
1½ cups (packed; 300 g) light brown sugar
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted, slightly cooled
7 Tbsp. vegetable oil
1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
5 large eggs, room temperature
Frosting and assembly
2 16-oz. packages full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, room temperature
8 cups (906 g) powdered sugar, remove lumps
1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
¾ tsp. Diamond Crystal or ½ tsp. Morton kosher salt
Long orange zest strips (for serving; optional)
CAKE
STEP 1
During the holiday season, sweet potato is king!. This moist sweet potato cake, layered with rich, lightly salted cream cheese frosting, is a delicious addition to any Thanksgiving dessert table.
To ensure a clean, professional look, the cake requires two cooling periods. After baking the layers, freeze them for a few hours to prevent crumbs from mixing with the frosting. Then, after frosting, let the cake chill in the fridge for a few hours to firm up, ensuring perfect slices.
Start baking early, and make the frosting while the layers chill. For a less sweet option, reduce the powdered sugar to 6 cups (680 g).
Cook 1½ lb. sweet potatoes (about 4 medium), scrubbed, in a medium pot of boiling water, stirring occasionally, until a tester inserted into centers meets no resistance, 40–45 minutes. Drain and let sit until cool enough to handle. Remove skins, transfer flesh to a medium bowl, and mash with a potato masher or fork. Let cool.
STEP 2
Preheat oven to 350°. Spray three 9”-diameter cake pans with nonstick vegetable oil spray, then line bottoms with parchment paper rounds. Spray parchment and dust pans with cake flour, tapping out excess.
STEP 3
Sift 3¼ cups (374 g) cake flour, 2 tsp. baking powder, 1½ tsp. ground cinnamon, 1 tsp. ground nutmeg, and ½ tsp. Diamond Crystal or ¼ tsp. Morton kosher salt into a large bowl (or just whisk to remove lumps). Combine 1½ cups (300 g) granulated sugar, 1½ cups (packed; 300 g) light brown sugar, ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted, slightly cooled, 7 Tbsp. vegetable oil, and 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on medium-high speed until light, fluffy, and no lumps remain, about 5 minutes.
STEP 4
Add 5 large eggs, room temperature, to sweet potato pur é e and mix well. Scrape into sugar mixture and beat to combine, scraping down bowl as needed. Reduce speed to low and with motor running, gradually add dry ingredients; mix just until incorporated. Divide batter evenly among prepared pans. Bake until cakes are slightly risen, tops are set, and a tester inserted into the centers comes out clean, 25–30 minutes.
STEP 5
Transfer pans to a wire rack and let cakes cool in pans 5 minutes. Run a small knife around edges of cakes and turn out onto racks. Remove parchment and let cool completely (rounded side down). Tightly wrap cakes individually in plastic and freeze until thoroughly chilled (this will make cakes easier to frost), about 2 hours.
Frosting and assembly
STEP 6
Beat 2 16-oz. packages full-fat cream cheese, room temperature and 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, room temperature in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment on high speed until smooth and creamy, about 1 minute. Add 8 cups (906 g) powdered sugar, sifted or whisked to remove lumps, 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract, and ¾ tsp. Diamond Crystal or ½ tsp. Morton kosher salt and beat on low speed 30 seconds (place a kitchen towel over bowl to capture any puffs of sugar). Increase speed to high and beat frosting 2 minutes. It should be thick and creamy.
STEP 7
Place a cake, right side up, on a large plate or cake stand. Spread one third of frosting on top. Set another cake on top and frost with half of remaining frosting. Repeat process with remaining cake and frosting. For the cleanest slices, chill 3 hours before slicing. Top with long orange zest strips (if using) just before serving.

HOT BUTTERED RUM PIE
PREPERATION
CRUST
STEP 1
Whisk 1⅔ cups (208 g) all-purpose flour, 1 tsp. Diamond Crystal or ½ tsp. Morton kosher salt, and ¼ tsp. baking powder in a large bowl. Add 2 oz. chilled cream cheese, cut into 1” pieces, and rub into dry ingredients with your hands until incorporated (mixture will look very shaggy). Add 10 Tbsp. chilled unsalted butter, sliced ½” thick, and toss to coat in flour, then smash with your hands into smaller, flatter pieces (about chickpea-size). Make a well in the center and pour in ¼ cup ice water. Toss with a fork or your hands to distribute. Knead dough in bowl a couple times to bring together (some dry bits may remain).
STEP 2
Turn dough out onto a surface lightly dusted with rice flour or all-purpose flour; dust top of dough with rice flour. Roll out to a ½”-thick rectangle. Fold in half, rotate 90°, and fold in half again. Roll out to a ½”-thick rectangle and repeat folding process, dusting with more rice flour as needed to prevent sticking. Pat dough into a ½”-thick disk; wrap tightly in plastic. Chill at least 2 hours and, preferably, up to 12 hours.
STEP 3
Let dough sit at room temperature 5 minutes. Unwrap and roll out on a surface lightly dusted with rice flour to a 12” round about ” thick. Brush excess rice flour from dough and carefully transfer to a 9”-diameter pie dish, preferably metal. Lift edges and allow dough to slump down into pan, then press firmly into bottom and sides. Trim, leaving about 1” overhang. Fold overhang underneath and press firmly to seal; crimp edges if desired. Prick bottom and sides of crust at regular intervals with a fork. Chill 15 minutes.
STEP 4
Meanwhile, place a rack in lower third of oven and preheat to 375°.
STEP 5
Place crust on a parchment-lined rimmed baking sheet. Line crust with 2 sheets of parchment paper (crumple parchment, then unfold so it molds to crust better) and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake until edges are golden brown and bottom is opaque (carefully lift parchment to check), 30–35 minutes.
STEP 6
Remove crust from oven; reduce oven temperature to 325°. Lift out parchment with weights. Return crust to oven and bake until bottom and sides are evenly golden brown, 25–30 minutes. Transfer blind-baked crust to a wire rack; let cool. Dough can be made 1 month ahead; double wrap in plastic and freeze instead of chilling. Thaw overnight in refrigerator before using. Crust can be blind baked 2 days ahead; store loosely wrapped at room temperature.
FILLING AND ASSEMBLY
STEP 7
Place a rack in lower third of oven and preheat to 375°. Cook ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring often, until it foams, then browns, 5–8 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes.
STEP 8
Process cup (133 g) dark brown sugar, 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour, 1 tsp. Diamond Crystal or ½ tsp. Morton kosher salt, 1 tsp. ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp. freshly grated nutmeg, and ¼ tsp. ground allspice in a food processor or blender until combined and no lumps of sugar remain. Add 3 large eggs, 1 cup well-shaken buttermilk, 2 Tbsp. dark rum, and 1 tsp. vanilla extract and process until smooth. Carefully pour in butter, scraping pan with a rubber spatula to get all the brown bits; process until combined. Scrape filling into crust.
STEP 9
Bake pie until filling is set around the edges and only jiggles very slightly in the center when gently shaken, 35–45 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool at least 30 minutes
STEP 10
Dust pie generously with powdered sugar just before serving.

These discerning buyers are increasingly prioritizing sustainability and wellness, spurring brands to adapt by launching new lines and reformulating old ones.
However, the lack of a standard definition for what constitutes “clean” beauty products has created confusion. Despite the positive intentions behind the clean beauty movement, it has also become a fertile ground for marketing strategies that aim to capitalize on consumers’ health concerns.
DISSECTING THE “CLEAN” LABEL
Who wouldn’t want skincare products that claim to be “non-toxic” and “chemical-free”? The allure of clean beauty lies in the promise of safety, but these claims are often rooted in incomplete or misinformation. Brands frequently define their products
as clean by excluding certain ingredients, such as parabens and synthetic fragrances, which they label as hazardous. This tactic effectively instills fear in consumers, driving them towards their supposedly safer options.
Smart marketing. Brands amplify the risks associated with certain chemicals while promoting the safety of their own products. The more apprehensive they make you, the more likely you are to buy their offerings. This method, known as greenwashing, involves making misleading claims about the environmental and health effects or benefits of products to attract concerned consumers.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND SKINCARE
Understanding the science behind skincare can help you make informed decisions. The reality is that it has always been illegal to market unsafe products. Health Canada strictly regulates the ingredients used in cosmetics to ensure consumer safety, there is a long list of prohibited ingredients as well as restricted ingredients, which may be allowed in small quantities with specific conditions of use.
MARISSA DENNIS
Health Canada publishes their “Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist” yearly and it can be reviewed online.
Many of the substances labeled as dangerous by the clean beauty movement are, in fact, safe and effective. If they were genuinely harmful, they would not be approved for use.
For example, parabens are widely vilified despite extensive research showing that they are safe at the low concentrations typically used in cosmetics. Parabens can increase the shelf life of your products, ensuring their safety and efficacy over time. Similarly, synthetic fragrances, often replaced by “natural” alternatives in clean products, are rigorously tested for safety. However, one may choose to avoid fragrances due to sensitivities.
SUSTAINABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY
While many clean beauty brands are genuinely committed to sustainability and transparency, it’s crucial to be cautious of those employing fear-based marketing. As an educated consumer, you should look for high-quality, scientifically backed information. Look for brands that offer full transparency regarding their ingredient lists and manufacturing processes.
Publications and third-party certifications can also guide your choices. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) and similar organizations provide valuable insights into the safety and environmental impact of various products. Opt for brands that meet these independent standards rather than solely relying on brand claims.
“” “STAY INFORMED, STAY SKEPTICAL, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, STAY HEALTHY.”
PRACTICAL STEPS TO NAVIGATE
THE CLEAN BEAUTY LANDSCAPE
1. Read Labels Wisely: Investigate the ingredient list of products. Just because an ingredient has a complex name doesn’t mean it’s harmful.
2. Consult Experts: Dermatologists and professional skincare specialists can offer scientifically grounded advice tailored to your skin type and concerns.
3. Seek Certifications: Look for third-party certifications that verify a product’s safety and sustainability claims.
4. Research Brands: Responsible brands prioritize both safety and sustainability, often aligning with the original goals of the clean beauty movement.
5. Avoid Buzzwords and Fear-based Marketing: Don’t be swayed by the “natural vs. synthetic” debate. Both categories have their merits when it comes to effective skincare.
The clean beauty movement has undoubtedly reshaped the beauty industry, mostly for the better, by pushing for transparency in ingredients, and ultimately leading to more sustainable and eco-friendly options. However, it’s essential to approach this trend with a critical eye. By equipping yourself with scientific knowledge and skepticism of marketing gimmicks, you can make more informed choices that genuinely benefit your health and well-being.
For those who value their skin health and wellness, investing in a skincare regimen backed by science, rather than fear, promises the best return. Aim for evidence-based choices that prioritize both safety and sustainability. Stay informed, stay skeptical, and most importantly, stay healthy.

Amy has a positive and visionary mindset and launched The Chic Experience to connect and inspire like-minded women and creative entrepreneurs worldwide, with retreats, conferences, and impactful events.
As we journey through life, the importance of living authentically becomes more apparent with each passing year. For many of us, me included, turning 40, actually 44 to be exact (which is this year!) a milestone that is prompting reflection and renewal—I am in my ‘self-care and self-love’ era. 40 and beyond, is a time to truly embrace who we are and to live our lives with intention.
At 40 and beyond, authenticity isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a way of life, a guiding principle that leads us toward a more fulfilling, joyful existence.
I am choosing to live in alignment with my true self and to stand confidently in my own skin, to honor my values, and to make decisions that resonate with my inner truth. When I think about Authenticity for me, it’s more than just being honest with others—it’s about being honest with ME! It’s the courage to strip away societal expectations, to embrace our unique quirks, and to live a life that feels good and right, even if it doesn’t look like what others might expect.
For many years, I was focused on building my career, adjusting and accommodating to my boys and meeting the demands of life. Before 40, I was stuck in a busy life routine, squeezing in me time, and squeezing in self-care. Now, I prioritize it. Not because I am 40, but because it’s essential to my well-being, and my true happiness and joy.
What does that look like, you might be wondering, and it’s not the spa or glam sessions, which I too, love. It’s nurturing meaningful connections, pursuing passions, or simply taking time to care for myself, movement daily, and listening to my gut, that nudge we so often ignore.
I am embracing change, evolving within my career and enjoying the journey toward living my true authentic life.
MY BEAUTY OVER 40 ROUTINE
Beauty, in my 40s, has taken on a new meaning. It’s no longer about trying to achieve a certain look or following trends; it’s about enhancing and celebrating the beauty that comes with experience, wisdom, and self-assurance. My beauty routine is rooted in self-care and self-love, with a focus on nourishing my skin, body, and mind.
Here’s my routine: I start my day with a hydrating cleanser that gently removes impurities without stripping my skin. As we age, our skin becomes more delicate, so I use products that are rich in antioxidants and hyaluronic acid to maintain moisture and combat the signs of aging. A good eye cream and eye gel patches are non-negotiable. I love 111skin rose gold ones.
Sun protection is another essential part of my routine. I never leave the house without applying a broad-spectrum SPF, even on cloudy days. Protecting my skin from UV damage is the best way to prevent premature aging and maintain a healthy, glowing complexion.
In addition to skincare, I do get botox quarterly, and
micro-needling treatments a few times a year. And, most importantly, I focus on inner beauty. I’ve learned that beauty truly radiates from within, so I prioritize hydration (water is my favorite drink!) and daily movement with 8-8.5 hours of sleep is a non-negotiable as well.
BEING CHIC: MORE THAN JUST STYLISH
Being chic is often associated with fashion, which is where I came up with my business name, in 2005, ‘Stylish’ in French is “Chic’ however, it’s more to me and my business, than that, ‘Chic’ is a way of life—a state of being that encompasses happiness, health, expanding, and thriving in every aspect of life.
To be chic is to be confident in who you are, to walk through life with grace and poise, and cultivate a positive mindset, yet when we teeter on the edge of stress or life’s challenges, we reset, recalibrate, and we carry on, being ‘Chic’!
As I continue my journey through my 40s and beyond, I’m committed to living authentically, embracing my beauty routine as a form of self-care, and embodying the true essence of what it means to be Chic. Let’s be Chic together. xx

Disagreements happen, but stay civil. Healthy discussions enrich our lives.

Always ask before posting photos of friends or family. Their comfort matters.

DINING ETIQUETTE
MS MODERN MANNERS
Arminé, known as Ms. Modern Manners, is a Modern Manners Coach, digital creator, and creative planner with a unique approach to contemporary etiquette.
In today’s fast-paced world, dining etiquette is not just about following rules—it’s about making everyone around the table feel comfortable and respected. I believe in bringing a fresh, modern approach to dining etiquette, where thoughtful interactions in every setting are key.
Whether you’re at a formal dinner or a casual gathering, small gestures like placing your napkin on your lap, waiting until everyone is served before you start, and offering polite conversation can transform a meal into an enjoyable experience for everyone.
As I like to say, “It’s not your grandmother’s etiquette—it’s about finding thoughtful ways to bring people together in our modern world.”
NAPKIN:
Place your napkin on your lap as soon as you’re seated, and use it to wipe your mouth when necessary.
UTENSILS:
Work from the outside in, using the outermost utensils first. If you’re unsure, observe others or follow the basic order of salad fork, dinner fork, knife, and spoon.
CHEWING:
Chew with your mouth closed and avoid talking with a full mouth.
TASTING:
As a sign of respect, taste a bit of everything on your plate, unless you have allergies.
WAIT FOR OTHERS:
Start eating when most of the table has been served. Don’t rush ahead unless the host begins.
CELL PHONES:
Keep your phone on silent and avoid checking it during the meal.
ELBOWS:
Keep your elbows off the table while eating.
THANKING THE HOST:
Express gratitude to your host or hostess at the end of the meal.
CUTLERY PLACEMENT:
To signal you’re finished, place your utensils diagonally across your plate, with the handles at around 4 o’clock and the tips at around 10 o’clock.
ENGAGE IN CONVERSATION:
Enjoy the mealtime conversation, but avoid controversial topics.
Remember that dining etiquette can vary based on cultural norms and the formality of the setting.
