elcome to Issue six of Stately Magazine. I hope that you are all enjoying the summer. You will already have seen that our cover is slightly different this edition in that we have a breathtaking image (credit Michael Holzhey) of one of the views from the Chateau Okanagan to accompany the feature on this outstanding property.

‘Wellness’ is a prominent theme within this issue with notable contributions from; Amy Nicole Cohen of Chic Retreat, a Q&A from Marissa Dennis and our newest contributor Lydia Rees. In the travel portion of this issue we find ourselves in the Maldives, a destination synonymous with the idea of rest and relaxation in the most luxurious setting. If you prefer the idea of taking to the skies and are in need of a specific, perfectly tailored travel experience then our Sky Luxe feature will certainly be for you. If your focus is centred around your retirement and the protection and enhancement of the legacy that you leave for your families then look no further than our pieces on tax planning and asset protection contributed by MacMillan Estate Planning as well as our introduction to boutique law firm, The Strongroom LLP. We are delighted to showcase the exquisite Albertan restaurant, Flores and Pine, a venue for all occasions that uses locally sourced ingredients as part of its chef crafted menu. Our celebrity journalist, Angela Sara West, has been extremely busy speaking to the formidable Mel B (of Spice Girls fame) who talks about her latest swimwear venture with her daughter as well as the significant reason behind her “no airbrushing” stance. Angela has also taken on the prestigious Silver Screen Ball before sitting down for a powerful conversation with a true warrior, Donia Youssef, whose story will soon be portrayed by a major A-Lister on the big screen. Our regular Stately Kitchen feature pulls on the alfresco dining theme, albeit with a Greek twist, and features some bright and fresh ideas. if your kitchen (or any other part of your home) is in need of a freshen up at this time of year then look no further than our favourite interior stylist, Hannah Thomas, who offers up her style guide for your outdoor spaces. Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I think about how many issues of Stately have now been produced and how the magazine continues to evolve, going from strength to strength with each new edition. There is some really exciting material in the pipeline for our upcoming editions - more interviews with global personalities and content provided from some truly wonderful people and businesses. If you would like to be a part of it I would love to hear from you. I will look forward to seeing you all again when the season changes. I hope you love this edition as much as I have loved curating it. Emma

erched on the breathtaking bluffs of Kelowna’s Okanagan Lake, Château Okanagan is a luxury waterfront vacation property inspired by French elegance.

INTRODUCING CHÂTEAU LUXURY TO THE OKANAGAN Embrace the essence of French luxury across 44 beautifully kept acres draped across the shores of Okanagan Lake. This gated waterfront estate edges almost one kilometre of exclusive shoreline, with five craggy beaches and numerous pathways awaiting your footsteps. Château Okanagan is the largest private rental property in the Okanagan and one of the most luxurious estates in Western Canada. With a private chef, customized experiences, and unparalleled amenities, nowhere compares.

‘ U N I Q U E LY ALL YOURS’

A GRANDE VISION The Okanagan is a special place for us — the serenity, the adventure, the flavours, the climate, the landscape. There is much to love about life here. With this in mind, we turned to Europe to explore how we could marry cross-Atlantic luxury with our Okanagan lifestyle. We played with ways we could arouse comfort and instill wellness that would feel truly unique. The result is someplace legendary. We hope the joy we experienced in creating Château Okanagan is passed on to you during your stay. I M P R E S S I V E A RC H I T E C T U R E AUTHENTIC STYLE

It takes time to create a legend. Our thoughtful process unfolded over five years, as we meticulously integrated French design elements into La Grande Maison. We unearthed treasured antiques, authentic furnishings, and beautiful building materials. From cascading fountains to gleaming chandeliers, every inch of the estate is designed for you to embrace European culture and revel in the energy of the Okanagan.

I N T RO D U C I N G ESTAT E CHEF SCOTT GEIRING For the past 25 years, Chef Scott Geiring has been cooking up creative and delicious dishes within the Montreal area. Born and raised in Montreal, Scott grew up around a diverse world of flavors. Always having a passion for the artistry of cooking, Scott pursued the culinary world after graduating high school. He attended Pearson Culinary Institute of Montreal, Canada and was one of the top chefs in his class. After graduation he decided to gain experience working internationally. Scott relocated to Switzerland at the age of 17, where he worked at one of the resort hotels learning some of the finest European cuisine. Scott then traveled to Hawaii to learn Polynesian cuisine with many French and Japanese influences. After returning to Montreal armed with international cuisine experience, Scott went on to work in several of the top restaurants and hotels in the Montreal area. Within a few short years, Scott decided to open his own restaurant, named Bistro Carambola which went on to be a widely award winning and Nationally recognized restaurant with awards such as “One of Canada’s top 10 Maverick Chefs from Quench Magazine formerly Tidings” and “Open Table’s top 100 restaurants in Canada”. Bistro Carambola was also awarded a consistent “Achievement of Excellence” by Trip Advisor. Scott’s success was due to his artistic and colorful fusion style dishes as well as his humble charm. After selling his restaurant in 2018 to venture into more corporate territory in the culinary world, Scott accepted the position as Executive Chef with Airbnb at their Montreal headquarters. With Airbnb Scott spearheaded many of the ideas for the food programs such as using local suppliers, low waste/low environmental impact as well as training programs which went on to help align all the food programs for each of the global headquarters. Within his time at Airbnb, Scott traveled to major cities across the United States to gain knowledge and put into motion the “reducetarian” way of running business. Throughout his time at Airbnb Scott strived to lower the company ’s global footprint in food wastage, lower attrition while developing smart cost-effective low waste profit gaining menus. In the spring of 2020 during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Airbnb was unfortunately forced to cut an inordinate number of staff which caused most food programs to be suspended. With the opportunity to venture to new places and industries, Scott and family decided to sell their home and move across the country to Kelowna to surround themselves in an area known for its beauty as well as a thriving food and wine scene.

OWN YOUR CONFIDENCE & FEEL YOUR FABULOUS WITH SPICEY MEL B! KEEPING IT REAL, SCARY SPICE MEL B GETS CANDID ON BODY CONFIDENCE AND SO MUCH MORE… OUR CELEBRITY JOURNALIST ANGELA SARA WEST @ANGELA_SARA_WEST UNEARTHS HOW THE HONEST SPICE GIRL SETS AN EXAMPLE TO YOUNG GIRLS, HER FAVOURITE SUMMER SWIMWEAR, MODELLING WITH HER MUM AND DAUGHTER, AND WHY SHE INSISTED ON NON-AIRBRUSHED IMAGES FOR HER #OWNYOURCONFIDENCE CAMPAIGN WITH POUR MOI.

L

ooking to spice up your life this summer? Look no further than one of our fave champions of girl power, Spice Girl Mel B, who tells us about how to achieve body confidence, what she wants, what she really REALLY wants, and how she’s inspiring us all to ‘feel our fabulous’ and forever confident with her gorgeous new lingerie and swimwear range. Empowering us all to ‘own our confidence’, luxury lingerie, swimwear and nightwear brand Pour Moi has teamed up with Mel B MBE - the embodiment of Girl Power, AKA Scary Spice! Joined by her stunning daughter Phoenix Brown and amazing mum Andrea Brown, this power trio are here to show us how they feel confident, comfortable and fabulous in a gorgeous new range from the brand. “I LOVED shooting this with my daughter Phoenix and mum Andrea, showing how you can feel confident, comfortable and fabulous in gorgeous lingerie, swimwear and beachwear!” Mel reveals. “I love that it was a collaborative experience – it was my idea to include my mum and my daughter. I love Pour Moi’s lingerie and swimwear and how it makes me feel, and I loved that almost everything looked WAY better on than I ever thought it would. I love that it’s British, and I loved that on the day we had so much fun!” SPICE GIRLS’ ‘WANNABE’ SUPERSTARDOM As one fifth of the best-selling girl band of all time, Melanie Brown aka ‘Scary Spice’ - is one of the most widely recognised pop stars on the planet. The band’s catchy debut single, ‘Wannabe’, hit the No.1 spot in a whopping 37 countries, sending them on a meteoric rise to superstardom. The all-girl group have since sold almost 100 million records and are such an influence on modern culture, very much inspired by feisty Mel B, that there are constant calls for them to reunite.

Mel B has been a driving force behind the Spice Girl’s reunions and tours while her solo and media work has gone from strength to strength. Phenomenally popular, Mel B has enjoyed a successful solo career, throwing her larger-than-life personality and incredible ambition all in and topping the UK charts with her debut single, ‘I Want You Back’, co-written by Missy Elliott. Her eagerly anticipated debut album, ‘Hot’, spawned two other Top 10 hits - ‘Tell Me’ and ‘Feels So Good’, while her second solo offering, ‘L.A. State of Mind’, followed before she scored another hit with dance track ‘For Once in My Life’ in 2013, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs Chart. The Scary Spice Girl remains constantly in demand as a TV presenter, too, also featuring as a judge on music mogul Simon Cowell’s hugely successful small-screen shows ‘The X Factor’ and ‘America’s Got Talent’, along with co-presenting ‘Dancing With the Stars’ in Australia and the UK’s version of ‘Lip Sync Battle’. CELEBRATING REAL WOMAN So, how did Mel’s latest top brand collaboration come about? “I love that Pour Moi’s philosophy is about feeling fabulous, feeling confident and celebrating women of all shapes, sizes and ages. It’s about being real, not being edited, and not taking ourselves too seriously,” says Scary Spice. “There is no such thing as the perfect body; we all come in different shapes, sizes, colours and skin tones, and all of them are beautiful. We need to celebrate all body types and shapes, too!” GIRL POWER! Their collaborative Own Your Confidence campaign is dedicated to women celebrating women, and both the Spice

Girls and Pour Moi believe that every girl and woman should feel confident and empowered to be unapologetically themselves. “I’m all about the girl power, as you know, so when I was approached by Pour Moi for this campaign, I knew I had to be a part of it. It’s time that we owned our confidence, spread those positive vibes and empowered others to be their true selves!” So much so, that you can now shop Mel’s styles, Feel Your Fabulous and Own Your Confidence with Pour Moi! How does perfect-fitting lingerie make Mel feel? “It makes me feel fabulous, confident, supported and sexy!” she reveals. “Great-fitting lingerie gives you confidence because you feel fully supported and fabulous, and that’s how we all should feel, right?!!” SCULPT YOUR CURVES The queen of girl power, just like Pour Moi, is all about celebrating our differences and what makes you uniquely YOU. Pour Moi will help you find the perfect fit, because when the fit’s good, YOU feel good, too! Their swimwear styles are designed to fit and flatter your natural body and help sculpt your curves. “I love Pour Moi’s lingerie and swimwear, and I loved that almost everything looked better on me than I ever thought it would. Along with Pour Moi, the Spice Girl hand selected a range of incredible products across lingerie, swim and beachwear that will make you feel your most confident self. Her fave confidence-boosting piece? “That’s a hard question, and the answer will probably surprise people, but I love the old-school white-lace India set. It’s so pure and pretty. Gorgeous!” She says she also loves the Paradiso, Cali and Casablanca swimwear lines, alongside Pour Moi’s Constance, Logo and India Eyelash lingerie sets and showstopping Leopard Couture Padded Bustier, which emulates Mel’s Iconic Scary Spice look, harking back to the hot’n’steamy Spice Girls days.

RADIATING SKIN & BODY CONFIDENCE Honest and transparent Mel B also spilt on how she’s dealt with body confidence through the years. Stating that she’s been through a lot of ups and downs, she says she is very grateful for her body and all it has done for her. She believes comfort and fit are key factors in making women feel confident. “100 percent! I went into this campaign thinking I was a 34D… turns out I’m a 32DD. That proves the point that most women don’t really know their correct bra size. When you find a bra where both boobs fit well, that doesn’t make your boobs spill over for a double bubble or feels too loose or too tight or shows off back fat, you do feel different because you look good in it. And your clothes look better with the right-fitting underwear.” Along with her daughter and mum, Mel’s cute pooch also got in on the camera action! The family joined forces with the luxury lingerie, swimwear and nightwear line with the shared belief that everybody deserves to feel confident and sexy in their own skin, no matter their shape, size, age, or skin tone. CONFIDENT IN HER SKIN From a young age, Mel says she understood that she looked different to other children in her school, so she had to quickly learn to be proud of who she is, her heritage, her hair and body. She has, therefore, always felt confident in her own skin. “I was born a working-class kid in Leeds in the 1970s. My dad was black – from Nevis – and my mum was a blue-eyed English rose blonde. I was brown,” she explains. “My skin was different to most of the other kids’ I went to school with, so I had to learn very fast from a young age to be proud of who I am, to own my heritage, my fro, and my body. That’s how I’ve always felt.”

29

And her confidence positively radiates in every amazing image in this fantastic campaign. “After all, there is no such thing as the perfect body!” Mel exclaims. “We need to celebrate how unique we all are.” Looking phenomenal, how does she see her body now, compared to when the Spice Girls were in their peak era? “Oooh… is that a fair comparison? I’m in my forties compared to my teens and twenties!” she says. “It’s harder staying in shape, but I feel so much better when I really push myself to exercise, to eat right and to just feel like I am totally comfortable in my skin. I am never going to have the body I had as a teenager, but this body has given me three children. It’s been through a lot of ups and downs, so I’m very grateful to this body.” EXPRESSING HER FREEDOM What does she love most about her own body? “I love my curves, I love the fact that my body is strong, and I love that I have brown skin. I love that I’m still standing after going through a lot in my life, including a ten-year abusive marriage. I’m a survivor. My body belongs to me, so part of the reason I did this campaign was to express my freedom.” KEEPING IT REAL - UNAIRBRUSHED IMAGES As part of the campaign, Pour Moi and Mel B both agreed on no airbrushing on all campaign imagery, which was very important to Mel. “We all have lumps, bumps, creases, cellulite and stretchmarks that maybe we don’t want, but they are part of who we are. I was very keen NOT to airbrush these images because I am real, I am honest, and I don’t want to have my waist slimmed or my thighs trimmed because it’s not who I am…” A HEALTHY BODY “I exercise – you can see my workouts on Instagram – I eat well – I don’t deprive myself of food or cravings - and I look after myself,” she divulges. “I’m proud to be 48 years-old and fit and healthy. I don’t want to be part of an unattainable, airbrushed campaign that actually makes women feel bad about themselves, because it’s not real.” “We all come in different shapes, sizes, colours, skin tones and all of them are beautiful. We need to celebrate all body types and shapes! To me, it’s about fit, healthy bodies, confident bodies… it’s about loving the body you are in!” How does she encourage and instil this ethos in her daughters so that they, too, feel confident in their bodies? “I tell them they are beautiful. I never talk about diets - I talk about health, fitness and strength.” UNDER PRESSURE? RELAX AND THINK FIT! How should women learn to love themselves unconditionally? “We just need to relax and stop putting pressure on ourselves,” Mel advises. “We need to think less about being thin and more about being fit. We need to honour our bodies and appreci-

ate everything they do for us, even if it’s simply looking at ourselves in the mirror and telling ourselves we are beautiful. We need to think about the parts of our bodies we like, rather than focus on what we don’t like, and we need to stop worrying about what other people think.” SOCIETY & SOCIAL MEDIA IMAGES Does she think society ’s views on the female body have changed much since the 90s? ”That’s a hard one… I think in a lot of ways we are more open, but on the other hand, we are bombarded with so many more images of ‘perfect’ bodies,” she replies. “Back in the 90s, there were fewer women who looked like me in the public eye and now there is a much bigger melting pot. But women’s relationships with their bodies are always very complicated…” It’s extremely important to Mel to set a good example to young girls about their bodies. “We live in an era of social media where girls – and boys – are constantly comparing themselves to perfect images, all the time. There is NO SUCH THING AS THE PERFECT BODY.” Her message to young women who feel pressured to look a certain way? “Please, please, please just be yourself. You are beautiful as you are.” And what would she say to her younger self? “Make the most of every happy moment.” POUR MOI – SUPPORTING WOMEN Pour Moi champions inclusivity with sizing from A-J Cup, with all products designed with everybody in mind, ensuring they are confident and supported, knowing they have found the perfect fit. Supporting women is at the core of everything Pour Moi does. “We believe that everybody should feel confident and empowered to be unapologetically themselves,” says Michael Thomson, CEO and founder of Pour Moi. “That’s why we couldn’t resist sharing this journey with Mel B. Charismatic, confident and a true inspiration to many women, Mel B embodies everything our #OwnYourConfidence campaign stands for.” “It was a no brainer to have her and her family help us spread the ‘feel your fabulous’ vibes!” The multi-generational Brown family show you how to feel confident, comfortable and fabulous in whatever you’re wearing.” Mel clearly feels completely at ease in front of the camera, as portrayed in her collaborative #ownyourconfidence campaign content. “She completely understood the aim of the campaign and the ethos behind Pour Moi, so when she suggested involving her daughter, mother, and adorable dog, Cookie, we jumped at the chance!” CHANGING FASHION How has she seen clothing change since the Spice Girls’ 90’s heyday? “We have so much more choice now!!” Mel replies. “Back in the day, you’d have to cut up clothes or alter them to create a certain look that you liked. Now, you can see something and literally order it online in seconds.” Fashion, of course, is constantly changing. “But then again, my daughter Phoenix is never happier than when she is rummaging around in my Spice Girl wardrobe which she calls my ‘vintage wardrobe’. And I still wear catsuits, leopard prints and everything I wore back then! And I can still get into most of them!”

ANTI-AIRBRUSHING CAMPAIGN IN AID OF WOMEN’S AID Supporting and empowering women is at the core of everything Pour Moi do, which is why, as part of the #OwnYourConfidence campaign, the brand is making a donation to UK charity Women’s Aid, forwhich both Mel B and Phoenix are patrons. “I really love that Pour Moi are making a donation to Women’s Aid. That means so much to me, as their patron,” reveals Mel B. GET SET TO SPICE UP YOUR LIFE! Rumours are rife that Spice fans might soon get what they wish for, with Mel B and fellow band members Mel C (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) all reportedly in reunion talks, just awaiting word from Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice) as to whether she will, this time, join them. s an interior stylist, I am constantly seeking new and unique ways to create beautiful spaces that bring joy and tranquility to our lives. One area that often goes overlooked when it comes to interior design is the backyard.

A backyard can be so much more than just a patch of grass or a place for kids to play. It has the potential to become a serene oasis, a place where you can escape from the daily hustle and bustle and find solace in nature and beauty. Creating a backyard oasis is not as daunting as it may sound. With a little planning and creativity, you can transform your outdoor space into a tranquil retreat that reflects your personal style and provides an extension of your home. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

1. DEFINE YOUR SPACE: The first step in creating a backyard oasis is to define the space. Consider what activities you enjoy the most - whether it’s lounging, dining, or gardening. Divide your backyard into zones for each of these activities, using different materials and layouts to designate each area. 2. SOFTEN WITH GREENERY: Incorporating plants and greenery is an essential aspect of creating an oasis-like atmosphere. Choose a variety of plants, including tall ones for privacy, lush foliage for a tropical feel, and fragrant flowers to engage your senses. The simpler the better. Keep it consistent. Whites and greens work well together. 36

Think hydrangeas and boxwoods. Then you can add in some annual flowers that you can replace yearly to add in your pop of colour. Every year you can switch up your colours! 3. CREATE A SEATING AREA: Every oasis needs a comfortable seating area for relaxation and entertaining. Invest in durable outdoor furniture that combines style and comfort. Opt for weather-resistant materials such as rattan or teak, and add cozy cushions and blankets for that extra touch of luxury. Place a pergola or umbrella to provide shade during hot summer days.

4. ADD WATER FEATURES: The sound of flowing water has a calming effect on the mind and can instantly elevate the ambiance of your backyard oasis. Consider installing a small pond, a trickling fountain, or even a mini waterfall to create a tranquil soundscape. Not only will it add aesthetic appeal, but it will also invite local wildlife to visit your little corner of paradise. 5. LIGHTING: Don’t underestimate the power of lighting when it comes to creating a magical outdoor space. Explore various options, such as string lights, lanterns, or solar-powered path lights, to add a warm and inviting glow to your oasis. Proper illumination will allow you to enjoy your outdoor haven even after the sun goes down. 6. COZY ACCENTS: To truly create an oasis-like atmosphere, add cozy accents that evoke a sense of comfort and relaxation. Incorporate outdoor rugs, throw pillows, and blankets in soft, natural materials to create a cozy nook. Hang a hammock or swinging chair for moments of serene daydreaming. Remember, the key to creating a backyard oasis is to design a space that reflects your personal style and needs. Whether you prefer a Zen-inspired retreat or a vibrant and tropical sanctuary, infuse elements that bring you joy and help you unwind. With a little effort and creativity, your backyard can become the serene oasis you’ve always dreamt of - a haven where you can recharge, indulge, and find inner peace. Enjoy your summer! MY THREE MONTH ANTI AGEING JOURNEY THESE DAYS, YOU CAN’T OPEN A MAGAZINE OR TURN ON THE TV WITHOUT SEEING A SMOOTH-FACED MIDDLE-AGED ACTRESS OR MODEL TOUTING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS THAT CAN “REVERSE THE CLOCK” ON AGING SKIN. “FREE RADICALS,” “ANTIOXIDANTS” AND “ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID” HAVE BECOME BUZZWORDS IN THE QUEST FOR ETERNALLY RADIANT SKIN.

W

hat are these “miracle” ingredients, and how do they work? Can they actually erase wrinkles, repair sun damage, or diminish age spots? I have asked myself this for years!

One thing I know for sure, at 43 years old… is SPF (Suncreen) makes me very happy! (And does wonders. More and more, skin-care and cosmetics companies are incorporating natural components such botanicals into their product lines, which is incredible but when we start with the SIMPLE fundamental steps in our routine, at a YOUNG age, we’re counting the clock back for our later years! The skin is the body ’s largest organ weighing approximately six pounds. It is constructed mainly of cells and tissues designed to be a barrier and protector of our organs and protect against the absorption of microorganisms, blocks radiation and also acts as a thermostat. Skin miraculously breathes, drinks and gives off carbon dioxide and has the ability to repair itself. Here the Skinny on my skin… (as a women in my40’s) - My daily, weekly and monthly must have/must do’s to improve my skin, and help with my anti-aging journey. Daily (morning and evening): cleanse, Toner and Moisturizer + SPF (40) @LaMer @AlumierMd @BiodermaUSA Monthly: Hydra Facials @Smooth Effects or @KelownaMedical Esthetics One of my favorite areas of skincare is Antioxidants for Sun Damage and Wrinkles being someone Antioxidants are natural substances made up of vitamins and minerals. They have the ability to fight “free radicals” -- unstable compounds that attack human cells and damage DNA. Damaged skin cells can lead to accelerated aging in the form of wrinkles, dry skin, dark circles

under eyes, dull skin, and more. Free radicals are in the air we breathe, the foods we eat, sunlight, and pollution; basically, just about everywhere. Eating foods rich in antioxidants is one way to ward them off. Another is to apply them on the skin, where they can seep underneath to strengthen skin cells and keep them healthy. The antioxidants most shown to repair damage and slow the aging process include: My favorites are Retinol: Vitamin A and its derivatives are powerful and proven anti-aging antioxidants. Retinol is a topical ingredient proven to promote collagen production and plump out skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It also improves skin tone and color, and reduces dark patches (hyperpigmentation) on the skin. Although retinol hydrates the lower layers of the skin, it sometimes causes the top layer (the epidermis) to become dry and flaky. Be sure to wear moisturizer and sunscreen when using it. AND, Vitamin C: As you age, your body slows down its production of collagen and elastin, which keeps skin strong, flexible, and resilient. Evidence suggests that the antioxidants found in vitamin C may stimulate the production of collagen and minimize fine lines, wrinkles, and scars. Vitamin C is being added to skin-care products such as creams and lotions. I am a 40 year young female who cares about her skin, but does not want to be at the mercy of having to do anything and anytime to look my best! I want to enjoy the routine and enjoy the skincare journey. Amy Nicole Cohen Beauty Expert @AmyNicoleCohen

INTRODUCING DONIA YOUSSEF DONIA YOUSSEF - THE RISING STAR SHINING FROM LONDON TO HOLLYWOOD… VIA CANADA!

O

ur celebrity cover journalist Angela Sara West @angela_sara_west chats with London’s fast-rocketing leading light, who is not just THE luminary to watch, but also to learn from, in her starring real-life role as an influencer, fighting and conquering when it comes to happiness and health. Multi-talented Donia Youssef is not just an ordinary multi-hyphenate. She is a multi-award-winning author, entrepreneur, writer, acting agent and film producer whose accomplishments stretch beyond boundaries. This astonishingly inspirational all-singing, all-dancing London lady ’s achievements span over 65 global festival wins, 11 finalist spots, four honourable mentions, and a further 21 official festival selections to boot. Doing the stuff that dreams are made of this immense recognition marks this living legend’s outstanding work, including her multi-award-winning film, ‘The Monster in Mummy ’, and her highly amusing, yet educational, animation projects, such as ‘Sadie and the Grove’, ‘Rosie the Rapper and Friends’, and ‘Monster in Wonderland’. LIGHTING UP TIMES SQUARE Recently featured on New York Times Square billboards, Donia continues to elevate her influence in the entertainment industry. However, she does more than create riveting stories. Her projects have a real purpose, focusing on mental health, cancer awareness, disabilities, and equality, demonstrating her commitment to making the world a better place. We’ve known each other for around a year now and, in my role as an events organiser, as well as a celebrity journalist, fun-loving Donia has been top of my list when it comes to VIP guests.

50

D O N I A YO U S S E F

She partied hard at my opening event of 2023, grateful for her first fun night out after having hidden away to recover from her latest cancer treatment. And she brought a few of her Hollywood pals along to support our celebrity charity event at Prince Zylinksi’s stunning White House home in London which, as mentioned in a previous issue of Stately, was partly in aid of the amazing charity Hospices of Hope, which is currently campaigning and fundraising to build a much-needed new hospice in war-torn Ukraine. SURREY AWARDS X SURREY FASHION WEEK The fun-loving creative, who has coveted Canadian connections via her award-winning animation company, also attended our Surrey Awards x Surrey Fashion Week celebrity charity catwalk show this spring, hot-off-the-plane from the catwalks of Cannes, where this iconic influencer won yet another award of her own at the prestigious world-famous Film Festival. I have no words to express just how proud I was to be seated adjacent to this amiable best-selling author, who was one of my VIP guests on my top table, this time at an inaugural Rocks Mag Awards charity event, which was held in collaboration with my annual Surrey Fashion Week celebrity charity catwalk show in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. What’s more, she brought along a few of THE most fun famous names in showbiz as her guests, including ‘Top Boy ’ actor, Shone Romulus. And boy, did we laugh at his antics on the night! On the Awards’ glitzy red carpet, multi-award-winning author, entrepreneur, writer and producer of books and films at London’s Monster World Studios, Donia dished up further insights into her incredible journey, her upcoming film, her latest book, ‘Rosie the Rapper and Friends’, and her involvement in the Surrey Awards and Surrey Fashion Week 2023’s ongoing silent auction in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. PROSTATE CANCER UK.

In addition to her many accomplishments and contributions, Donia has also recently teamed up with Trauma Surgeon Professor Mansoon Khan on her Monster World Studios venture in London. This partnership is a powerful and innovative blend of medical and entertainment industry knowledge and is set to transform the way these sectors interact. This bridging of sectors is the perfect manifestation of Donia’s ethos: from trauma, we can turn it into power. With her profound personal experience and dedication to make a difference in the world, this new venture promises to be yet another impactful project under her belt. In other exciting news, an A-list Hollywood actress has been confirmed for the role in Donia’s animation project ‘Sadie and the Grove’. This development further solidifies Donia’s foothold in the entertainment industry and is a testament to the quality and reach of her work. You’re a multi-award-winning author, entrepreneur, writer, and film producer. Which of these roles do you enjoy most, and why? Each role is rewarding in its unique way, but writing is where my heart is... It’s where I can express my creativity and make a difference through storytelling. Your work, particularly your animation projects, often address significant societal issues like mental health and equality. Why do you believe it’s important to highlight these topics? Art and storytelling have immense power - they can reflect society, evoke emotions, and inspire change. Addressing societal issues like mental health and equality is essential because they affect so many people. My sister sadly took her life when she was only 26 years-old, leaving two babies without a mother. By incorporating these themes into my work, I hope to generate dialogue, raise awareness, and contribute to making the world a better place. STAT E LY M AGA Z I N E

SAVING THE PLANET THINK OCEAN TACKLING PLASTIC POLLUTION TO KEEP OUR OCEANS & EARTH ALIVE

O

ur celebrity cover journalist Angela Sara West @angela_sara_west is not just busy interviewing famous faces on red carpets around the world, she’s also passionate about spreading the message of the importance of going green for future generations. The relentless writer, interviewer, TV producer, co-founder of Surrey Fashion Week and celebrity charity events planner (and mum!) has recently taken on an additional role working alongside the incredible Founder of Think Ocean – Hugo Valdes-Vera at ThinkOcean.earth – in her mission to help save the planet! Part of the European Commission’s HORIZON MISSION Think Ocean not only recover plastic waste from the sea and recycle it, but do so much more to restore our precious oceans and waters. And the high-profile Silver Screen Halloween Ball in London this autumn, which Angela is assisting with (see p.49 for tickets) will debut a fabulous short film from the charity. Jump on board and help us save the world for generations to come. Think Ocean’s roots lie with a group of environmentalists who in 1992, united several organizations towards a common goal; to stop the whale hunting in the South Pacific, ending with the co-creation of the Southern Ocean

56

THINK OCEAN

Whale Sanctuary in 1995. Founding members continued working on environmental projects globally, including San Antonio Wildlife Rescue Centre, “El Nino current” Pacific Ocean emergency and expanded focus in supporting organizations tackling whale hunting, deforestation, wildlife trafficking, conservation and the adoption of CITES treaty of Latin America. Since then, our focus and activity has expanded. WHAT WE DO We educate new generations. Through our education programs we encourage and inspire younger generations to be innovate and implement solutions for our dying planet before it’s too late. Our future is in their hands! We collect, recycle and transform waterways and marine litter into meaningful products. Our focus is on the blue economy, working in a multi-dimensional way to further the cause. While we work on one-off efforts such as clean-ups, we also have more of a long-term strategic focus, encouraging truly sustainable practices. Although we’ve worked on one-off efforts over the years, from rescuing whales and setting up cleanups, to research and expeditions, our core mission is saving natural resources and transforming ecosystems and economies through engagement, collaborations and technology, working toward circular economies. OUR FOCUS Preventing more plastic from reaching the ocean, treating and transforming it into meaningful products, educating the new generationis to become the answer to our planet’s pollution problem.

THE PROBLEM Every year, 11 billion kilograms of plastic pollution ends up in the ocean. 80% of this pollution flows into our oceans via rivers. Our goal is to remove the plastic before it ever arrives. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT The presence of plastic in the environment can have grave consequences for ecosystems. Wildlife can become entangled in and immobilised by larger pieces, while smaller pieces may be mistaken as food by birds and aquatic animals like dolphins, turtles and fish. The result: severe health issues leading to the pain, suffering and often death of the afflicted animals PLASTIC POLLUTION: KEY FACTS Plastic waste makes up 80% of all marine pollution and around 8 to 10 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year. Research states that, by 2050, plastic will likely outweigh all fish in the sea. In the last ten years, we have produced more plastic products than in the previous century. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has stated that basically 100% of all plastics human beings have ever created are still in existence. Plastic generally takes between 500-1000 years to degrade. Even then, it becomes microplastics, without fully degrading. Currently, there are about 50-75 trillion pieces of plastic and microplastics in the ocean. B O U T I Q U E G LO B A L W E A LT H MANAGAMENT FIRM

MACMILLAN ESTATE PLANNING A S K T H E E X P E RT W I T H SHERI MACMILLAN, CEO MacMillan Estate Planning is a boutique estate planning firm. For over 30 years our firm has worked with many affluent families to design their estate plans either in person or v i r t u a l l y. We s e r v i c e clients all over the world, focusing on Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Our goal is that, through our planning process, we can build a Strongroom to safeguard your family’s significance. Essentially, this involves the creation of a bespoke estate plan to protect the things that you care about most. We consider your ‘significance’ to be not only the assets in your estate but also those people that mean the most to you. We offer our clients the ability to plan their estate from a single location - everything they need to implement the design of their estate plan can be provided by one organisation which includes; lawyers, accountants, financial planners and insurance professionals. Like an architect, we work together holistically to build estate plans for domestic and international clients who often have a multitude of estate planning requirements.

58

M AC M I L L A N E STAT E P L A N N I N G

Most of us are concerned about having to pay too much tax both during our lifetime and when we pass away. We sat down with CEO of MacMillan Estate Planning, Sheri MacMillan, to ask for her views on the strategies that we might consider to help us reduce our tax burden. In answering that question, I want to start by focusing on the tax exemptions that we have available to us. A tax exempt asset is one upon which you will not pay tax both through your lifetime or when you pass away. This is different to a tax deferral, where we get a tax break in the short term, but in the long run there may be tax consequences - like your RRSP for example. We often find that our clients are not optimizing tax exemption strategies because they are unaware of them. Your primary home is an asset which grows in your estate tax free for the course of your lifetime. If you sell it, irrespective of any increase in value since the time of purchase, there is no tax to pay. Equally, when you pass away and the property moves through your estate it is, again, not subject to taxation. People often find that they have more significant gains in the value of their recreational properties and wonder if they might identify them as their primary home. The answer is ‘yes’. If you have a property in B.C for example and it has greater appreciation than your home in Calgary, then we could elect that the BC property is your exempt asset and reduce the amount of tax in your estate. This is not something that you need to decide upon today. We can decide that in the year of your passing unless you sell the property during your lifetime. Whilst it can be something of a ‘drop in the ocean’ inside sizeable estates we must endeavour to make the most of our TFSA room. Like your primary home, any growth in the value of your TFSA is also tax exempt. Tax exemption strategies can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax if you take a proactive approach to planning your estate. Beyond that there are some more bespoke strategies that allow people to tax shelter part of their estate on the basis that the value sheltered can grow tax free during their lifetime and, when they die, it can pass through their estate on a tax free basis. If there is a corporation involved we can further maximise the tax savings and reduce the amount of tax that would be paid when drawing value out of the company. Many of our clients go one step further and use this strategy to grow further wealth and reduce their income tax bill through the use of an interest deduction. STAT E LY M AGA Z I N E

59

Business owners also like to use what is known as an Estate Freeze within the design of their estate which operates to ‘freeze’ the value of their business for tax purposes at a particular moment in time. This means that the tax bill is also ‘frozen’ such that the business owner is able to plan for and take steps to mitigate the tax bill during their lifetime. Any growth in the value of the business can be attributed to the next generation both as a means of (i) deferring tax into the future and (ii) allowing a family to use multiple Lifetime Capital Gain Exemptions to further mitigate the overall amount of tax paid.

In the last couple of months we have witnessed the collapse of The Silicon Valley Bank. How might this event impact upon our readers’ investment portfolios? What happened with the Silicon Valley Bank was frightening because, for many, their first thoughts were of the banking crisis in 2008. Whilst Silicon Valley Bank was a fairly niche organisation in the banking world, this was still the second biggest banking failure in US history. We shouldn’t forget, of course, that over in Europe we also had one of the traditional banking heavyweights, Credit Suisse, suffering some very real issues affecting their stability to the extent that their share price was slashed and they were forced into what has been described as a ‘shotgun marriage’ with UBS. While the impact of this union remains to be seen, it could be well be significant due to their their international presence. The extent to which these recent events in the financial world will impact your investment portfolio will depend on the geography of where you invest, the specific sectors that your investments are held in and how proactive you have been about implementing protective measures for your assets and investments. We are always looking at ways to protect our clients’ assets in a way that makes the most sense for them, their family and their long-term goals . This type of mindset will become more pronounced during times of economic uncertainty and we are able to utilise

various strategies to protect our clients’ investments both when times are good and during periods of volatility.

How would somebody best protect their assets during times of uncertainty? Proactive planning is imperative to ensure the protection of your personal assets. This is not something that should be done as a sudden reaction to market volatility – rather a mindset that is adopted to your portfolio at all times. From an estate planning perspective, using trusts is a great way to do this because you are essentially able to create a fence or a barrier around your assets. A trust is a legal relationship between the trustees, who manage the trust and the beneficiaries who are entitled to benefit from the assets within the trust. They can be built in several ways, and used in several ‘arenas’, to help to safeguard your estate. Many of our clients come to MacMillan Estate Planning when they have concerns about losing their assets due to unforeseen and unpredictable economic events. In situations like the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank, we will often recommend that our clients explore the use of trusts within their overall investment strategy. The reason for this is that these particular kinds of trusts are governed by the general principles of Trust Law as well as The Insurance Act which means that they carry less risk than more traditional investments all whilst providing several benefits that offer both protection and reassurance for the investor. Trust Planning is, of course, not restricted just to the investment of cash assets. Trusts can be used to protect all kinds of assets – it could be real estate, company shares or life insurance value. The assets held by the trust are protected from external forces. Equally, trusts can be used as part of your estate plan during your lifetime, and then beyond, to protect family wealth as it transitions to your beneficiaries through your Will.

MacMillan Estate Planning Corp. will be hosting a complimentary Estate Planning Webinar on Thursday, Sept 13, 27, Oct 18, Nov 8, 22, Dec 6. We are also holding Seminars at the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary on Thursday Sept 27, Nov 22 to register, please visit www.macmillanestate.com or call 1-833-266-6464.

elcome to the Strongroom, a boutique legal firm located in Calgary. Strongroom LLP provides bespoke solutions to families seeking assurance that all opportunities available are maximized to enhance and protect their legacy. Many families working with Strongroom LLP are referred to us by their accountants, lawyers, investment advisorsand other trusted professionals who understand that a traditional Will is not an estate plan for entrepreneurs and distinguished families of means. Fair vs. equal where one or more children are not active in the family enterprise, ensuring tax efficient planning to address ever increasing taxation for business and estate assets and the protection of assets to avoid loss prior to or following the transition between generations are all concerns addressed through proper estate planning. For a patron of Stately Magazine, intergenerational wealth is often a focus. Eliminating probate for our parents and our own estates, inheriting through trusts to protect assets for children from claims by former spouses or other creditors, are a preferred approach to estate planning.

A common concern for entrepreneurs is the disruption of the business through the imposition of two tiers of tax exceeding 60% in relation to corporate assets without advanced planning. An estate freeze and other advanced tax strategies will enhance the business by minimizing taxation. The Strongroom LLP estate planning process involves several sessions focusing on goals, objectives and family dynamics. The integration of these elements with the legal and tax strategies available through Strongroom LLP safeguards and enhances legacy. If you do not understand, or cannot assert, that you are confident that taxes during your lifetime are minimized, that the plans for your legacy will not be frustrated, or that family harmony will not be disrupted through a lack of planning, a prolonged estate administration process, or challenges to your estate, your planning is incomplete. Strongroom LLP offers a complimentary consultation to determine the options available to you for your planning and flat fee services for implementation of your estate and tax plan. In conjunction with its strategic partners, Strongroom LLP frequently assists families with a connection, or assets situated, in the United States and United Kingdom. Q&A Q&A WITH MARISSA DENNIS NP, CANS (CERTIFIED AESTHETIC NURSE SPECIALIST) TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BRAND. I have been passionate in the medical aesthetics industry for almost a decade now, working and training under multiple specialists and world-renowned injectors. In 2018, I started training with a nationally recognized company as well as offering private training to other practitioners in the field. Earlier this year, I officially opened Onyx Beauty Lab in Kelowna, BC with the intention of offering a personalized and holistic experience to empower our patients to reach their full life’s potential. HOW DID YOU FARE THROUGH COVID, WAS YOUR BUSINESS AFFECTED? I opened near the end of the pandemic which was an interesting time to start a business given the economic state, however, I have no grounds for comparison to pre-pandemic. Surprisingly, the industry in this area did see an uptick in 66

procedures. This might be attributed to the “zoom effect” where many people were staring at themselves on camera all day, and becoming more aware of looking tired, angry, or sad. YOU HAVE A HUGE FOLLOWING ON SOCIAL MEDIA, IT HAS BECOME SUCH A HUGE PART OF MARKETING / BRAND AWARENESS, IS THIS SOMETHING THAT CAME NATURALLY TO YOU? I have been active on social media almost since I started in the industry. At that time it was a different landscape and there were not as many clinicians offering educating perspectives on the specialty. It has been interesting to watch it change and grow. In my opinion, it has become much more complex and difficult to navigate compared to what it was a few years ago and now I work with a social

media company to manage the Onyx brand instagram (@onyxbeautylab.com) while I continue to manage my own (@ np.marissa.aesthetics) WHY IS THERE STILL A BIT OF STIGMA WITH INJECTABLES AND COSMETIC CARE? Years ago, there was a significant stigma attached to injectables and aesthetic surgical procedures. In more recent times, there has definitely been a shift in the younger generations (20-45ish year olds) towards positive aging and transparency about said procedures. However, some stigma still remains. With the increase of these procedures occurring, there is an increase of undesirable outcomes or complications, and often a lot of related media coverage of injectables “gone wrong”, that feeds any negativity surrounding these procedures. SO MANY CELEBRITIES HAVE FILLERS BUT THEY LOOK AWFUL, ARE THEY GOING TOO FAR OR ARE FILLERS NOT FOR EVERYONE? There can be multiple factors that affect the results of aesthetic treatments. There can be complications that lead to poor results, either temporarily or permanently. Patients may suffer from dysmorphic syndrome and request repeated treatments from multiple providers, each having different ideas and approaches which can lead to a “Frankenstein effect” and the results appear to be pieced together. Even if patients stay with the same clinician, they might have lost sight as to what “normal” looks like, they may have difficulty saying “no” to their patient when asked to do more, or the may overcorrect - trying to address issues such as sagging skin with more filler, when in reality - the patient requires surgery or a different intervention. Are fillers for everyone? There are definitely contraindications to having these procedures, such as pregnancy and certain medical conditions. If a patient has recently experi-

STAT E LY M AGA Z I N E

enced a very traumatic situation, is suffering from dysmorphic syndromes, or has unrealistic expectations, then their clinician would likely want those issues to be addressed before proceeding with some treatments. That said, I think there are options for most people who want to undergo any aesthetic treatments whether it be hyaluronic acid fillers or bio-stimulants, or even platelet-rich plasma which uses the patient’s own blood. WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF FILLERS? ARE THEY ONLY FOR WRINKLES? Fillers can be used to replace lost volume and support tissue. As you age, you lose deep boney support, resulting in folds and sagging. Fillers can be used to restructure these areas on the face, enhance areas such as lips or cheeks in a younger patient, or even used to treat fine lines and help with skin hydration. Off-label, we have seen fillers used in other areas such as earlobes, hands, and even male enhancement. ARE THERE MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS TO INJECTIONS? In more recent years, some studies have been published showing neuromodulators (such as BotoxTM) as an effective treatment for depressive disorders and useful in decreasing anxiety. Anecdotally, I have been seeing this effect on my patients for years. Interestingly, most of my male patients have specifically commented on how these treatments affect their moods. I know from personal experience that when I look better, I feel happier, my attitude is more positive, and I am kinder to myself and to others. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS? Neuromodulators specifically act on muscle activity. They are used to block or weaken muscle contraction in a specific area such as between the eyebrows or on the forehead. Blocking or weakening these contractions can prevent lines in those areas from deepening, and potentially soften existing lines. WHAT CAUSES WRINKLES? There are different factors that contribute to aging. Lifestyle factors may account for up to 80% of visible aging. Plus we are hard-wired to age in terms of genetics and there are specific physiological changes that take place as we get older. There is a loss of deep bone and fat support, laxity or stretch68

MARISSA DENNIS

ing of skin and ligaments, thinning of skin, and repeated muscular contractions and these all contribute to signs of visible aging. OUTSIDE OF INJECTIONS AND COSMETIC CARE, WHAT CAN OUR READERS DO TO MINIMIZE THE LOOK OF AGING? SUNSCREEN & other sun protection!! I cannot say it enough. Up to 80% of aging can be attributed to lifestyle factors, primarily UV exposure. Other factors that contribute to aging include stress levels, sleep, nutrition, hormonal changes, alcohol intake, and smoking. Generally speaking, minimizing stress, improving sleep, eating an array of vegetables and healthy fats, staying hydrated, decreasing or ceasing alcohol and smoking can all help slow down the signs of aging. ARE THERE SYMPTOMS OF AGING SKIN OUR READERS CAN LOOK OUT FOR? What can we avoid to help slow the look of aging? As we age, skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity. We also start to see old sun damage come out in the form of hyperpigmentation (brown spots) or redness. You can avoid UV exposure by wearing an SPF of at least 30, reapplying throughout the day (every 2 hours if outside), wearing clothing that protects you from the sun, and seeking shade. Avoiding or minimizing smoking, vaping, alcohol, and processed foods can also help. DO MEN OR WOMEN AGE BETTER? Naturally, men age better. The reason for this is that men have facial hair, so the skin of their face is naturally thicker to support the hair follicles. Thinning skin plays a role in visible aging. This is the reason that women tend to get “smokers lines” or vertical lip lines around their mouth while men do not. WHAT ARE THE BEST PRODUCTS FOR AGING SKIN? The 3 key products that I advise for almost all of my patients include SPF (minimum 30) to be worn daily and reapplied throughout the day, an antioxidant such as Vitamin C every morning to help protect the skin from pollutants and free radicals, and a retinol/retinoid or equivalent to help with cell turnover. Peptides and growth factors are a nice bonus to promote repair and enhance collagen production. Cleansing the skin properly before application is important to ensure products penetrate into the skin, and using a gentle physical exfoliant 1-2 days a week is beneficial. Always discuss options with your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us Marissa. SUPPLEMENTS: FEEL GREAT FROM WITHIN To support your overall vitality, consider incorporating a few essential supplements into your daily routine. These supplements can provide targeted nutritional support and help you thrive in this transformative phase of life. 1. CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D: Strengthen Your Bones Maintaining strong bones is crucial as we age. Calcium and Vitamin D work together to support bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Consider a high-quality supplement to ensure you meet your daily requirements, especially if sun exposure is limited. 2. OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS: Nourish Your Heart and Mind Omega-3 fatty acids are renowned for their heart and brain health benefits. They reduce inflammation, support cardiovascular function, and promote cognitive well-being. Look for fish oil or algae-based supplements for a reliable source of these essential nutrients. 3. PROBIOTICS: Boost Your Digestion and Immunity A healthy gut is the foundation of overall well-being. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that promote digestion, support immune function, and maintain a balanced gut microbiome. Choose a highquality probiotic blend to nurture your digestive system and enhance your body’s natural defense mechanisms. 4. MAGNESIUM: ENERGISE YOUR BODY AND MIND Magnesium plays a vital role in muscle function, energy production, and quality sleep. If your dietary intake of magnesium is insufficient, consider adding a magnesium supplement to support your overall vitality and help regulate bodily processes. 5. VITAMIN B12: Enhance Your Nerve Function and Cognition Vitamin B12 is essential for optimal nerve function and cognitive health.

74

As we age, absorption of B12 from food sources may become challenging. A B12 supplement can ensure you maintain adequate levels of this crucial nutrient for a sharp mind and vibrant nervous system. 6. COENZYME Q10 (COQ10): Energize Your Heart and Body Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that supports heart health and cellular energy production. Levels of CoQ10 naturally decrease as we age, making supplementation beneficial. Boost your energy levels and protect your heart with a CoQ10 supplement. Remember, this journey is unique to you. Embrace the principles of self-care, nutrition, exercise, and sleep in a way that resonates with your preferences and circumstances. Customise these practices to align with your needs, and don’t forget to celebrate every small victory along the way. As you embark on this transformative journey, surround yourself with a supportive network of friends and loved ones who uplift and understand you. Engage in social activities, build new connections, and enrich your experiences. This stage of life is an opportunity for personal growth, self-discovery, and embracing the fullness of who you are. Embrace new possibilities, step out of your comfort zone, and explore new horizons. Each moment is an opportunity to tap into your full potential, pursue passions, learn new skills, and embark on exciting adventures. This new stage in life becomes a time of empowerment, self-discovery, and embracing the fullness of who you are. Embrace it with open arms and a joyous heart, knowing that the best is yet to come. 24 CLASSIC CARS ALMOST EVERYONE HAS A FANTASY THAT INVOLVES A SUPER-COOL CAR. HERE’S HOW TO GET BEHIND THE WHEEL.

T

he 1967 Chevy Corvette, the 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL, any pre-1974 Porsche 911–these are some of the vehicles that have earned a significant place in automotive history. Iconic yet accessible, they are museum-quality cars that you really just want to take for a spin. These automotive legends have weathered the decades, but with some ingenuity, you can still get behind the wheel of most of them. Here’s our list of the ones worth the hunt. 1. Once called “the most beautiful car ever made” by Enzo Ferrari, the 1960s Jaguar E-Type is a classic sports car mainstay. “If you only choose one car from this list to drive, this is the one,” says McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty, the world’s largest provider of collector vehicle insurance. This staple of British motoring history still has verve–it can perform up to 150 m.p.h. and brakes better than most cars from its era. Visit the Jaguar Heritage Driving Experience program in Kenilworth, U.K., where you can pay for a day of driving the marque’s classics.

92

2. The emblem of Big Three muscle cars, the Chevy Corvette is the most collected vehicle in America. The second generation, which spanned 1963 to 1967, is “the most iconic American car ever made,” says Keith Martin, publisher of Sports Car Market. “It’s still breathtaking and fresh today.” Early generation Corvettes remain plentiful in the U.S., so you can scour auctions, collector car dealers, and websites like classiccars.com for deals.

V I N TAG E C A RS

one, contact the Lamborghini Club America or an auction house like RM Sotheby ’s or Gooding & Co. They ’re usually in the know about the cars before they reach the general market.

4. The Porsche 911 represents vintage driving at its best—particularly during the golden era before the car’s 1974 redesign. “There’s magic in the early 911,” Hagerty says. “It’s an amazingly well-built machine that delivers one of the most honest driving experiences of any sports car ever built.” Even by today ’s standards, first-generation 911s still have plenty of horsepower and can hold their own on the track. You can find one, even in mint condition, on eBay.

5. Based on the first full-size car Rolls-Royce made after the war, the original Silver Dawn drophead launched in 1949 and retired in 1954. The name was intended to mark the dawn of a new era for the world and Rolls-Royce’s place in it. Slightly smaller than pre-war cars, the Dawn helped the British bespoke carmaker reintroduce motoring craftsmanship while bringing the company into the modern age. They ’re extremely rare: only three of the original 28 dropheads remain in the U.S., and those are owned by private collectors. Happily, the carmaker is introducing a successor model after a 60-year hiatus.

6. Among the first sports cars of the post-war era, the Mercedes SL 300 Gullwing was the fastest production car of its time when it was introduced in 1954. As the first direct fuel injection series production car, the SL 300 could travel at an eye-popping 160 miles per hour. “Nobody expected something like that from Mercedes,” says Constantin von Kageneck, a specialist in classic car marketing at the

Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, CA. Though about three-quarters of the original SL 300’s survive today, many still belong to their original owners. To see one, visit the Classic Center or an automotive museum like the Petersen in Los Angeles.

7. Ferrari made just 39 of these elegant race cars between 1962 and 1964, so they are extremely rare. “The 250 GTO is probably the holy grail in terms of value and recognition, but the reality is only a handful of people in the world will ever have the chance to legitimately drive one,” Hagerty says. An early model fetched $38 million at Bonhams’ Quail Lodge auction at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance two years ago. If that’s too pricey, know that any 1960s Prancing Horse with a V12 engine is worthy of making the list.

8. The precursor to James Bond’s getaway car, the Aston Martin DB4 is an iconic workhorse. “The DB4 is a thoroughbred that never gets flustered,” Hagerty says. “I wouldn’t hesitate to drive one across the country. It’s no wonder that James Bond favored the derivative DB5.” They ’re in short supply, so if you want to drive one, your best bet may be to befriend a collector.

9. If any part of you harbors a race-track fantasy, this is the car to track down. When BMW came to America in 1975, it brought a quartet of models with it, including the 3.0 CSL coupe. Driven by racing legends Brian Redman, Sam Posey, and Hans Stuck, the car claimed victory at the 12 Hours of STAT E LY M AGA Z I N E

Sebring race that year and won Daytona the following year. The pair of triumphs established BMW’s performance chops stateside. In addition to its engineering and performance legacy, the 3.0 CSL pioneered a host of technologies found in later BMW models, from its first-ever four-valve six-cylinder engine to its early anti-lock braking system. BMW offers a turn at the wheel as part of its BMW Classic Center in Munich.

10. Acura’s halo car from 1990 to 2005, the NSX is young but mighty. “While it’s not as sexy as its European rivals, the Acura NSX showed the rest of the world that supercar specs and daily-driver manners could co-exist,” Hagerty says. “It inspires confidence and begs you to keep pushing, braking later, and turning harder. It may be the most underrated car on this list.” Its successor, the new Acura NSX, reaches customers this year and is likely to inspire renewed interest in the original. Fortunately, Acura made 9,000 first-generation NSX cars so finding one online is easy.

12. A counter-culture classic, the vintage VW Beetle represents simplicity and fun–in other words, motoring at its best. “Besides the easy driving experience, the Beetle’s friendly exterior attracts people no matter where you’re driving, and it seems everyone has their own Beetle story to share,” Hagerty says. “This is not the car to buy if you’re shy.” If you’d like to get behind the wheel, old Beetles can easily be sourced from eBay and classified ads.

13. The quirky Volvo P1800 was stylish enough for Roger Moore to drive one in the spy thriller TV series The Saint. This two-seater sports car is durable: one surviving model has clocked more than three million miles. Its brethren belong to private owners, but check with the Volvo Owners Clubs if you’d like to find one for sale or make an owner an offer.

11. Also known as the Cobra, this high-performance descendant of the Ford Mustang was a darling of the late 1960s. With Ford’s V8 engine, the Shelby GT350 was a legitimate racecar for the street. “When you get into it and turn the key, the car doesn’t only rumble audibly, it also actually shimmies side-to-side and up-and-down, just a bit,” Hagerty says. “And that’s while it’s still parked. When you get on the gas it leaps and roars.” You will quickly see why designer Carroll Shelby is lauded as a 20thcentury motoring genius. To drive a vintage Cobra, visit a highend classic car auction house, dealer, or specialized broker.

96

14. The V10 Dodge Viper GTS of the 1990s couldn’t be built today. At 450 horsepower, it’s every bit as raw as its predecessor, the Shelby Cobra, without anti-lock brakes or traction control to correct driver error. “It’s the automotive equivalent of whiskey, neat–no pretense, just one hell of an experience,” Hagerty says. You can find one online or through a collector vehicle auction house such as Auc-

V I N TAG E C A RS

15. With Italian styling and a reliable Ford V8 engine, the DeTomaso Pantera represents the best of both worlds and is a worthy alternative to similar Lamborghinis and Ferraris from the same era. “You’d expect an early ‘70s Italian car to be garish, loud, and hard to drive,” Hagerty says. “While it is garish and loud, the Italianbodied and American-powered Pantera is actually rather easy to drive.” Procure one at a high-end classic car auction house, such as Barrett-Jackson or Bonhams.

17. The McLaren F1 announced the British supercar maker’s foray into modern racing when it was unveiled in 1992. Six years later, it set the record for the world’s fastest production car, at 242 mph. “The McLaren F1 was Formula One legend Gordon Murray ’s high-tech supercar answer to Porsche and Ferrari,” Hagerty says. “And it didn’t just exceed the standards they established, it obliterated them. Driving an F1 is a sublime ballet of shocking power, braking, and control.” McLaren only built 64 of these, but fortunately, it just put up for sale chassis #69, the 60th model built. If you have eight figures to spend, you can contact specialoperations@ mclaren.com.

18. Porsche’s first production car, the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive Porsche 356, survived four high-flying generations before it was laid to rest in the mid-1960s. Considered the most highly developed of the four-cylinder Porsches, the 356 is also regarded by vintage car experts as the most fun to drive. Procuring one isn’t difficult: about half of the 76,000 cars originally produced survive. 16. The McLaren F1 announced the British supercar maker’s foray into modern racing when it was unveiled in 1992. Six years later, it set the record for the world’s fastest production car, at 242 mph. “The McLaren F1 was Formula One legend Gordon Murray ’s hightech supercar answer to Porsche and Ferrari,” Hagerty says. “And it didn’t just exceed the standards they established, it obliterated them. Driving an F1 is a sublime ballet of shocking power, braking, and control.” McLaren only built 64 of these, but fortunately, it just put up for sale chassis #69, the 60th model built. Offering lots of power and a pleasant interior for not much money, the Datsun paved the way for Toyota, Honda and Nissan to gain acceptance with U.S. consumers in the following decades. Classified ads from Hemmings and AutoTrader Classics have many Datsun 240Zs listed for sale.

22. The Pininfarina-designed Fiat 124 Spider debuted in the U.S. in 1968 to an eager audience. With ample trunk space and enough room in the cabin for two people not to touch shoulders, the roadster quickly became a road trip classic. “It doesn’t have much power, but it’s cute,” Martin says. “It’s a great summertime car.” If you can’t find an original model online, know that Fiat intr an updated 124 Spider for 2017.

23. Introduced in 1959, the bulbous British roadster became the last of the “big Healeys” when it ended production in 1967. Curvaceous and brass, the Austin-Healey 3000 was an automotive icon of the Swinging Sixties. “This was the final version of the ‘Big Healey,’ with its powerful six-cylinder engine and overdrive,” Martin says. “It will cruise easily at 75 mph on today ’s freeways.” You can occasionally find a latemodel Austin-Healey 3000 through Hemmings and other classic car-buying websites.
