elcome to Issue Five of Stately Magazine. Spring has sprung inside this edition (even if it takes just that little bit longer to arrive where I live in Alberta). You will already have seen that our cover is graced by the timeless Elle Macpherson who joins us to talk about her latest jewellery and wellness projects. Following on from their feature in the last edition we are delighted to have Kaavish Spa on our back cover. Indeed, ‘wellness’ is a theme throughout the issue with notable contributions from; Amy Nicole Cohen of Chic Retreat, Alignment Coach, Lucy Crane and our regular contributor Sarah Stone’s Intentional Living. The destinations that we feature, Capetown and Bali, are synonymous with the idea of rest and relaxation in the most luxurious setting but, if heading away from dry land sounds more appealing, then look no further than Quasar Expeditions who offer luxury cruising in the Galapagos Islands on Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco’s beautifully restored honeymoon yacht. If you are in need of a specific, perfectly tailored retreat experience, then our Luxe Club feature will certainly be for you. Another of our regular contributors, Tony McGrath, has recently returned from the UK where he enjoyed the history and hospitality of Windsor and Eton and kindly provides his insight into some of the charms of this beautiful area just outside of London. If your wealth planning and legal ‘wellness’ is more your focus then look no further than our pieces around tax planning and asset protection contributed by MacMillan Estate Planning and to our introduction to The Strongroom LLP. We are delighted to showcase some stunning consumables including artisan writing implements from Wig & Pens, a look at some of the high-end jewellery procurred by Hollywood jeweller, Chris Aire, and the style highlights of the prestigious Surrey Fashion Week. Our regular Stately Kitchen feature pulls on the Spring theme with some bright and fresh ideas and, if your kitchen (or any other part of your home) is in need of a freshen up at this time of year then look no further than our favourite interior stylist, Hannah Thomas. Once you have implemented some of Hannah’s ideas why not check out Calgary’s favoured purveyor of antiques and bespoke collectible furniture, Uniquities. We had a wonderful chat with serial entrepreneur and business and leadership advisor, Cindy Wahler, who told us about her career to date and her most recent venture, a rather different path by all accounts, BiteMeCookie. Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I think about how many issues have now been produced and how the magazine continues to evolve, going from strength to strength with each new edition. There is some really exciting material in the pipeline for our upcoming editions - more interviews with global personalities and content provided from some truly wonderful people and businesses. If you would like to be a part of it I would love to hear from you. I will look forward to seeing you all again when the season changes and we can, hopefully, be on the cusp of a long, hot summer (within reason!) Emma

The yacht offers some of the most spacious indoor and outdoor areas of all ships that sail the islandsand the recent renovation gives travelers 360º views upon their departure allowing them to fully connect with their surroundings. Additionally, the Grace’s upgraded engines, generators and propellers allow guests to sail the islands faster, in more comfort and with less fuel consumption, while traveling at 15 knots. By minimizing travel time the yacht’s new agility maximizes time spent having once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters on the secluded islands. The M/Y Grace sails on two different 8-day itineraries and one 15-day itinerary, all inspired by Charles Darwin’s discoveries. With a maximum capacity of 16 passengers the Grace gives guests the exclusive access to the Galapagos that Quasar Expeditions is known for.

ELLE MACPHERSON BRING OUT YOUR INNER GODDESS! ELLE MACPHERSON TALKS TOP WELLNESS TIPS FOR MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT!
Celebrity Journalist Angela Sara West @angela_sara_west discovers how Australian supermodel, actress, TV host and businesswoman Elle Macpherson has cultivated her “inner goddess”, as the entrepreneur discloses her spiritual hacks, how routines rule, her top tips for top healthand how ‘travelling with purpose’ is the key to unlocking new experiences. Known as ‘The Body’, beautiful model Elle Macpherson has strutted her stuff on worldwide catwalks and graced the cover of many a prestigious magazine… But did you know that Elle is seriously into serious self-care and is the founder of WelleCo – the original pioneer of nutritional greens and plant-based elixirs created from sustainably sourced ingredients?
14
To celebrate Elle’s 59th birthday last week – yes, you read that right., she’s almost reached the big 6-0 – the supermodel teamed up with Atelier Romy to create an exclusive Elle Macpherson x Atelier Romy Goddess Necklace and shared her favourite wellness bio-tweaks that have helped Elle find her inner self and revealed how everyone should #trustyourgoddessenergy!
At the end of last month, Atelier Romy hosted a preview event at the Orchid Place in the heart of London’s Westminster, during which the demi-fine jewellery brand unveiled their new Goddess necklace, inspired by supermodel and WelleCo founder Elle, who was proud to be Guest of Honour at the special event. The stunning turquoise and gold Goddess ‘Elle’ necklace, which is available to purchase, officially launched on 29th March, marking ‘Aries Dragon’ Elle’s birthday.
Inner Strength & Beauty #trustyourgoddessenergy This very special jewellery piece features a stunning coin, .inspired byand dedicated to, wellness icon Elle, who has a deep, personal bond with the founder of Atelier Romy, Sabine Roemer. The 18-karat yellow-gold vermeil coin necklace features a meditating ‘Elle-inspired’ woman, sitting inside a lotus flower with her eyes closed, representing the ability to find inner stillness and connect to your higher guidance and self-power and to trust the power of feminine energy. The meaningful piece was especially crafted to pay tribute to the unique connection between women and their journey to finding and expressing their inner strength and real inner beauty. The Lotus flower represents purity, resilience and strength as it rises through muddy waters without any stains, whilst the coin sits on an 18-inch turquoise necklace (3mm IJM Turquoise, Quality AA): a gemstone that has long been prized as a powerful talisman with healing properties. The new design, which acts as a personal daily reminder to #trustyourgoddessenergy, was modelled by Elle during the event, where guests attending, Canadian comedienne Katherine Ryan among them, indulged in a gong bath led by Athena Ko. Lucky guests also received a special Limited Edition Silver Caddy to house The Super Elixir™ - WelleCo’s exceptional and multi-award-winning supergreens powder, which underpinned founder Elle’s own personal wellness journey and led to the launch of WelleCo in 2014 on Elle’s 50th birthday – together with other elixirs from the WelleCo collection.
“I wanted to design a necklace as a daily reminder that symbolises and guides you to discover the strength and beauty that is natural within you,” said Sabine Roemer, founder of Atelier Romy. “To trust your own divine Goddess energy and confidently connect with your higher self, Elle - with whom I share a deep personal bond reminded and empowered me to unite with my feminine energy and find everything I need within myself.” An industry expert for nearly 30 years, Sabine is an award-winning Master Goldsmith. Atelier Romy’s mission is to bring the beauty and artistry of high jewellery to a wider audience, without compromising on design or craftsmanship. Crafting timeless but modern pieces which will last and elevate every outfit without breaking the bank, the designer has created the ‘Elle’ Goddess coin with an option to personalise the coin with an engraving of symbols that stand for your own personal “mantra” or guide.
Elle’s Top Wellness Tips for Mind, Body and Spirit - How To Be Your Own Well-Within Goddess To celebrate Elle’s 59th birthdayand the release of the Elle Macpherson x Atelier Romy Goddess Necklace, WelleCo founder Elle shared her favourite wellness bio-tweaks that have helped cultivate her inner goddess.
Seek nature “I’m usually up with the sun,” Elle reveals. “I’ll then get outside and put my feet on the earth to ground myself. I love being outside and connecting to nature. I choose activities where I am outside, close to nature as much as possible — hiking, biking, swimming or simply sitting in the fresh air and sunshine.” “Growing up, I learnt a lot about our natural world,” she continues. “Not only did it set the scene of my childhood, but it ignited in me a lifelong devotion to natural methods. For me, the sun and the sea are medicine. But we can learn from everything nature has to offer, which is why I have endless books on the subject and surround myself with like minds who also believe in the power of nature. I like to think that WelleCo, with all our knowledge of ingredients, synergies and formulas, is like a modern showcase of nature’s perfect intelligence.” 15
Routines Rule!
Serious Self-care
Elle’s evening beauty routine is, of course, a wellness routine, too. “It consists of an infrared sauna followed by a cold plunge in my plunge bath. It’s great for detox, immune boost, lymph support and relaxation. I follow that with my nightly ritual of a cup of Sleep Welle Calming Tea, which helps the mind, emotions and body to rest, recover and rejuvenate. Usually, I’ll write a gratitude list just before I sleep.”
“I also love dry body brushing and try to do this at least three times a week to stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage, clear my system of any toxins and it also exfoliates your body for smooth, soft skin. Following this, I like to apply a body cream or oil.”
“Each morning, I like to take two capsules of The Skin Elixir and The Hair Elixir with water while taking The Super Elixir™️ greens powder,” Elle explains. “I leave the jars next to my toothbrush to remind me – I’ve found pairing routines helps maintain continuity.”
Move Out of Your Comfort Zone
Elle’s a huge advocate for pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone. “I like to go for a cold plunge after my workout followed by a macha in the sunshine before getting ready for my day. I’ve just discovered the Russian Banyas, an ancient tradition of steam sauna, which I like to alternate with a cold plunge. It’s a great way to stimulate the lymph system, detox, unwind and a fun alternative as a date to connect with friends –– check it out!”
Connect to Self
Her top tips for connecting with ourselves? “Breath, meditation and inner connection are extremely important to me. I like to keep it simple. I’ve found breath practice helps amplify the benefits of all the other daily practices I do’. And it’s free and profoundly effective! My daily meditation practice includes 25 minutes in the morning –– either guided or in silence. I aim to be in the natural flow of life as much as possible.”
Beauty Treatments – Look Within
As for facials, she says, “I believe the best facial is what you put inside your body. If I’ve got a big shoot or an event coming up and my skin needs a boost, I start juicing four times per day using my friend Dr Sara Siso’s protocol, with lots of turmeric, ginger, garlic, green leafy vegetables, cucumberand The Super Elixir™,” she explains. “I’ll also incorporate The Collagen Elixir to support my skin’s hydration and elasticity. Zoning in on your microbiome is the way to heal from within. I know now to be extremely careful with what I put into my body, treating it from within with quality whole foods so my skin and hair can naturally look their best.” 16
When it comes to body treatments, ‘The Body’ has top tips aplenty. “A favourite of mine is the Cleopatra Bath for the ultimate hit of nutrients. All it takes is milk, honey, olive oil and flower petals for a smoothing royal treat. Given the skin is the body’s largest organ, this bath is a calming, express way of absorbing nutrients.”
Travelling Tales
As for her travel tips, speaking on the day of the biggest ever World Travel & Tourism Council Summit (WTTC) Global Summit in Riyadh recently, the sensational supermodel and entrepreneur says ‘travelling with purpose’ is the key to unlocking new experiences. “We travel so much for business, but travelling with purpose – where you can go to a destination and really be imbued by the culture, get to know the people, break bread with the people – is extremely important,” she explained. WTTC’s highly anticipated Global Summit is the most influential Travel & Tourism event in the calendar and has attracted nearly 3000 delegates from over 140 countries, including Heads of State, Ministers and CEOs from across the sector. The supermodel had visited the Kingdom for four days, spending time in the Saudi Arabian capital before the eventand entrepreneur Elle says she enjoyed experiencing Saudi Arabia’s “unbelievably generous” hospitality. She told the 22nd edition event’s delegates she had experienced and enjoyed “incredible” food at restaurants across Riyadh while aiming to “really get a feeling of what it is to be here”. “I see travel as a vehicle for spiritual and personal growth,” said the founder of WelleCo. “We have to adapt and be flexible when we’re on the roadand that’s actually a fantastic skill we need as an entrepreneur.” Elle’s exquisite collaborative jewellery piece in collaboration with Atelier Romy is available to purchase for 300,000 CAD online at atelierromy.com © Angela Sara West 2023 Insta: @angela_sara_west

Uniquities is a family business. It was created in 1992 purely from a personal need to renovate our 1912 home and being unable to find the architectural antiques we wanted. If we were frustrated with the lack of availability of architectural salvage then it seemed obvious to us that other people were feeling the frustration too. I grew up in Wales in an area of great historical importance with Roman amphitheatres, Norman castles, Georgian mews and Victorian shopping arcades. So, of course, we began our venture there. Since those early days, we have expanded our sourcing trips to many places throughout Europe. You are as likely to find us at an upscale antiques fair in Montpelier as you are in a farmer’s barn on the Cornish coast. We believe passionately in saving snippets of history from landfills. We have an insatiable love for the rusty, crusty and dusty. We will climb fences, rummage in grubby barns, attend auctions in dreadful weather conditions and visit historic sites to gain a greater understanding. We obsess over the forgotten trades of times past.
We listen, learn and absorb so that we can pass that knowledge on and we are in awe of the fact that we will never stop searching and learning. We are also 100% positive that the world would be a greener and more enlightened place if we salvaged more and preserved all architectural history. When an English Georgian stone chimneypiece, or an 18th century Italian bibliotheque is discarded, or worse still landfilled, it is gone forever. The superior craftsmanship, authentic period detail and beautiful patina of old materials simply cannot be reproduced. We travel to many countries in search of architectural, garden and decorative antiques. Our collections are curated and hand sourced by us. We also offer you our years of experience in sourcing specific items. We have had the pleasure of finding beautiful pieces for clients, from ancient English barns to French marble fireplaces. Contact us for more information. We are open for Container Reveals, special events and by appointment. www.instagram.com/uniquitiesyyc 19

Spring and summer are the perfect time to inject some color and personality into your living space. With the right colours you can create a fresh and vibrant atmosphere that will make you feel energized and ready to tackle the day. Be it switching out accessories or doing a whole room makeover, with so many hues to choose from it can be overwhelming to decide which colours to go with.
Fear not, I have got you covered with a guide that will add a touch of sunshine and fun to your home. Let’s talk about spring colours - think of blooming flowers, green grassand bright sunshine only softer, more subdued. They add an element of happy and fun. If you are not a fan of bold, bright colors, then 2023 is your year! Spring colours and muted tones are perfect for refreshing your living space and injecting some new life into your home. So, grab a paintbrush or a shopping cart and get ready to transform your home with some fun, soft spring colours!
23
When it comes to choosing the perfect paint colour it is essential to consider tones like dusty pink and sage green - both are great for creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere. These are also the top muted tones this year. A popular tone is sage green. This versatile color is a muted version of the classic green and is perfect for creating a soothing space. You can pair sage green with other muted tones like beige, ivory and other shades of subtle greens to create warm layers in an inviting area. My favorite green paints for this year……

Dusty pink is warm and inviting and pairs well with neutral & more colourful colours. A black pinstripe would make this pink its perfect partner. So keep that in mind when choosing accessories! My favorite pink paints this year…….

FENG SHUI WITH
SARAH STONE THE CELEB-APPROVED WAY TO FENG SHUI YOUR HOME 8 WAYS TO ATTRACT POSITIVE ENERGY AND HAPPINESS INTO YOUR HOME THE CELEB APPROVED WAY! SARAH STONE TALKS TOP WELLNESS TIPS FOR MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT!
Written by Sarah Stone, Intentional Living Expert and Founder of Creative Feng Shui. With celebrities including; Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, Julia Roberts, Tommy Hilfiger, Steven Spielberg, Gwyneth Paltrow, Khloe Kardashian and many many more… all said to be fans of the age-old Chinese system, Intentional Living Expert, Best-selling Author and Co-Founder of The Wellbeing Concierge, Sarah Stone shares with us 8 ways to attract positive energy and happiness and bring some Feng Shui Magic into your home. 34
Sarah is currently based between the Hamptons, New York and the UK to help her international portfolio of clients harness the positive energy of Creative Feng Shui to cultivate healthier, happier people and homes. She said; “Feng Shui seems to work like magic, but it’s actually an ancient Chinese art and science that harmonizes the energy flow in your space, within you and around you. Creative Feng Shui is a simplified modern-day, intention-based modality of the more traditional Feng Shui technique. Empowering you to create a life filled with fortune, purpose, fulfillment and flow. When we change what’s happening around us in a positive way we reconfigure what happens in our lives as well. Studies show that, depending on your environment, you are a different version of yourself. That’s the beauty and the appeal of Creative Feng Shui - when you are consciously creating your environment with clear intentions you can be
whatever version of yourself you want to be. If you want to create a new habit, you can start by changing your environment. It really can be as simple as: by changing your space you can, and will, change your life. So, how exactly does Creative Feng Shui work? Your surroundings have a big impact on your life and your feelings. They shape your thoughts and actions more than you are aware of. Creative Feng Shui is a time-tested technique that helps improve the energy within you and around you. Subtle energy shifts and focus can inspire positive change and encourage you to make adjustments in your environment to welcome more balance and harmony to improve the flow of energy in your life. When we start paying attention to, and being more selective, about what energies we allow into our space, our home and our relationships we begin to treat our entire space and lives with more gratitude and fresh perspective. Making subtle changes to align the physical and mental energy of your home can cultivate peace, calm and balance in every other area of your life. 35
Here are Sarah’s 8 ways to intentionally attract positive energy and happiness into your life and home: 1. Create Space and Clear the Clutter By clearing the clutter in your space you can change any stagnant energy from negative to positive. This positive energy then results in positive interactions, positive experiences and optimal productivity and happiness. 2. Think About the Role of Your Rooms By designating areas for various activities you are subconsciously allowing yourself to move with ease and purpose within your home. For example; your bedroom should be restful, peaceful, supportive and loving so ensure you don’t store dirty laundry in there or have too much clutter which could leave you feeling anxious. 3. Stimulate The Senses Throw on a sweater and breathe new life into your home by opening the windows and allowing the breeze to blow through and move any stagnant air and blow out any cobwebs, even if it is just for 10 minutes each day because this invites in a fresh flow of energy. You can also burn some lavender, pinewood incense, aromatherapy oil or trusty scented candles to harness the power of your senses. 4. Light it Up! Turn up the lights. Both daylight and artificial light raises the level of chi (positive energy). Winter is here so we need to create our own cozy space with ambient lighting and candles. It’s important to ensure light fittings and light bulbs are functioning fully. Pay attention to the 36
front door where you should aim to create a “bright hall effect” to provide a warm welcome as you step inside. Use ambient lighting to illuminate dark corners and create an even flow of chi, particularly in the living room, the kitchen and the home office. 5. Introduce Life Bring Nature Indoors: Seasonal quince branches on a table, a vase of flowers by your bedside, a bowl of fruit on the dining table or a stack of logs by the fire – these are all perfect natural enhancements for your home during the winter season – they add active chi and it will add new energy to the space. 6. Create Family Flow Maintain family harmony by sitting at a round table as this is less conducive to conflicts and arguments than a square or rectangular one. If you do not have one then add several round objects, dishes and table decorations as focal points instead. 7. Music Music is super powerful at setting the tone – choose a playlist that suits your mood and enhances the vibe you are creating. 8. Be Intentional Be conscious of what (and who) you are surrounding yourself with. Ensure that everything you welcome into your life and home FEELS amazing. We have merely scratched the surface here. elcome to the Strongroom, a boutique legal firm located in Calgary. Strongroom LLP provides bespoke solutions to families seeking assurance that all opportunities available are maximized to enhance and protect their legacy. Many families working with Strongroom LLP are referred to us by their accountants, lawyers, investment advisorsand other trusted professionals who understand that a traditional Will is not an estate plan for entrepreneurs and distinguished families of means. Fair vs. equal where one or more children are not active in the family enterprise, ensuring tax efficient planning to address ever increasing taxation for business and estate assets and the protection of assets to avoid loss prior to or following the transition between generations are all concerns addressed through proper estate planning. For a patron of Stately Magazine, intergenerational wealth is often a focus. Eliminating probate for our parents and our own estates, inheriting through trusts to protect assets for children from claims by former spouses or other creditors, are a preferred approach to estate planning.
A common concern for entrepreneurs is the disruption of the business through the imposition of two tiers of tax exceeding 60% in relation to corporate assets without advanced planning. An estate freeze and other advanced tax strategies will enhance the business by minimizing taxation. The Strongroom LLP estate planning process involves several sessions focusing on goals, objectives and family dynamics. The integration of these elements with the legal and tax strategies available through Strongroom LLP safeguards and enhances legacy. If you do not understand, or cannot assert, that you are confident that taxes during your lifetime are minimized, that the plans for your legacy will not be frustrated, or that family harmony will not be disrupted through a lack of planning, a prolonged estate administration process, or challenges to your estate, your planning is incomplete. Strongroom LLP offers a complimentary consultation to determine the options available to you for your planning and flat fee services for implementation of your estate and tax plan. In conjunction with its strategic partners, Strongroom LLP frequently assists families with a connection, or assets situated, in the United States and United Kingdom. BESPOKE, UNIQUE & BEAUTIFUL
WIG & PENS Wig & Pens are based in the beautiful valleys of South Wales in the UK and are very rapidly becoming the pen of choice for the professional who wants to make a statement when seeing clients. They produce bespoke, ‘one off’ pens to rival any of the top brands. All pens are handmade individually and absolutely nothing is mass produced. Since establishing themselves last year they now boast an ever increasing international client base ranging from Diplomate, Ambassadors, famous Journalists and many members of the legal profession including the Judiciary. In fact, they recently sent a pen to a member of the judiciary of Qatar and that fountain pen is being utilised on a daily basis! The business came into being in very unusual circumstances. Its founder, David Bentley-Miller, in addition to being a Solicitor-Advocate also suffers from Bi-polar disorder and it was a conversation with his doctor who suggested that making things can often provide a diversion and respite for when the low periods come. David decided to enrol at a local woodworking class one evening a week. Whilst at that class he set about making pens for himself to use at Court. Unsurprisingly, other Lawyers were soon taking an interest in the pens when they saw them in Court and within a short time David was being asked to undertake commissions for them which proved to be successful. As his skills grew, David soon realised that the pen market was a pretty crowded place and he wanted to do something to differentiate himself from the hobbyists who appear at local craft fairs. This was not his market or indeed his target audience. Therefore, he set about designing pens, all of which are completely unique. They may look similar, but they will be different. The resin pens have random patterns in them that simply cannot be replicated with exactness. Additionally, there is the now famous Wig & Pens Historic Collection. This section really has started to become a great talking point amongst pen connoisseurs internationally as they stock wood from such sought after items as a WWII Mosquito fighter plane, the world famous Spitfire, 1860 Houses of Parliament refurbishment and also from the Tower of London itself to name but a few examples of materials that you can have turned into your very own piece of writing history. In line with their bespoke nature, you can choose the colour of your pen working parts ranging from gunmetal, Gold, Chrome etc. In addition, they stock over 150 Fountain pen nib types from standard size 5 Bock nibs right up to Solid gold or Platinum. It truly is a bespoke service making the pen that looks and feels as individual as you. Naturally, a full laser engraving service is also available for those who want to give these beautiful pens to mark a special occasion.

Fine jewelery and timepiece creator Chris Aire rocked the Grammys 2023 with his eponymous brand. LL Cool J lit up the prestigious awards wearing a cool $9.5m-worth of the revolutionary celebrity jeweler’s stunning diamond

Gold® collectionand how his pioneering prestigious pieces have changed the trajectory of the watch and jewelry industry.
Known as the “King of Bling”, the innovative creator of timeless, trendsetting luxury watches and jewelery not only adorns the music and film industry’s A-list (Angelina Jolie, Clint Eastwood and Dr. Dre. among them) but also the NBA’s most notable stars.
“BY GRACE AT THE GRAMMYS – THE DIVINE “KING OF BLING” ROCKS THE STARS!.”
From signature dog-tag pendants and impeccably-crafted watches, to unique socially-responsible bespoke diamond ring commissions and his legendary RED GOLD® collection, Chris also made history as the first jeweler to stage a runway show of his jewelry at New York Fashion Week in 2004, when supermodel Naomi Campbell walked in a diamond halter, followed by May Andersen donning a $41m-bejeweled dress two years on.
African-born Aire moved to the US as a teen and attended college in California, working at a restaurant and sleeping in his rusty old BMW before setting up shop at various L.A. hotspots to find his “dream clientele”. His innovative and dramatic timepieces, like his jewelry collections, are now highly revered among tastemakers, watch and luxury jewelry aficionados worldwide…
Celebrity journalist Angela Sara West @angela_sara_west chats with Chris about the famous fans of his brand, success secrets, his legendary Red

You have a fascinating ‘rags-to-riches’ story… How did it feel to realize your dream on launching your eponymous brand? Humbling. I know it’s all by Grace. I never take it for granted, which is why I keep working and challenging myself six days a week to better myself than I was the previous day.
Who/what influences your work? The Divine influences me through art, music, culture, dreams, imagination, natureand our clients. I spent most of my formative years in Africa, so the culture is ingrained in me. I learned invaluable lessons about who I am and my relationship with the world. It exposed me to natural beauty, incredible art, musicand discipline. These lessons inspire everything I do.
The secret to your phenomenal success? Grace. The ability to see things before their physical manifestation. I see the world uniquely from Chris Aire’s perspective and embrace things many people miss or take for granted. All our pieces embody this uniqueness. They are created meticulously with attention to detail in a magnificent way. This energy resonates with our clients, coupled with our business motto, “CAF” (customers are family). We treat them with the utmost care and respect, which keeps them returning.
How have your innovative ideas and creations influenced the jewelry and timepiece industry? In a significant way. Over-sized watches and jewelry, aka “Bling,” were at one point taboo, but today are mainstream and have generated billions of dollars in additional revenue for the entire industry. Our Red Gold® brand was a gamechanger for branding in the watch and jewelry industry. We’ve influenced how some older brands approach brandingand subsequently increased the world’s rose gold and pink gold sales.
You boast countless celebrity fans and just recently, LL Cool J wore 390 carats of your ‘clear-as-water’ diamond jewelry to the Grammys… Yesand Shaggy wore over $500k worth of diamond jewelry to the Grammys from the Red Gold® brand, too. Other famous fans include Dr. Dre, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Angelina Jolie, Regina King, Ellen Degeneres and Client Eastwood. 52
Your big break came when legendary NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton ordered platinum basketball pendants, charmsand bracelets for his crew, seeing you become THE go-to jeweler… A few of your personal favorite pieces? I have so many… I love everything we create for different reasons. My favorite pieces right now include the NBA 75 Greatest Players rings. It allowed us to create something for some of the greatest athletes to ever play basketball in the NBA’s history. They carry a lot of meaning… full details are encapsulated in the design of the rings. Each was inscribed with all 76 names, including customizing each with the personal information of each player. Shaggy’s custom-commissioned ring, which we delivered to him right before the Grammys, depicts a slice of his incredible story. Also, the Floral Fantasy $40m diamond dress we made entirely in 18-karat amber hue gold and diamonds from our Red Gold® brand, the $10m diamond halter wholly made in platinum, 18-karat amber hue gold and diamonds from our Red Gold® brand. It was the first time an entire dress had ever been made of precious metal and diamonds. And the Don ring we recently created for DL Hughley, which is simple and elegant.
You’re big on sustainability, inclusion and diversity, as well as social responsibilityand actively support African non-profit organizations and help communities in your homeland to empower the underprivileged to achieve their dreams... We are all connected to one another and the environment. Some may disagree, but this is a belief I hold dear to my heart. It is evident in everything we do. We are involved in charitable work in Africa in the area of education and provision of clean waterand in the US through our non-profit, the Aire For Life Foundation www.aireforlife.com, which helps communities and empowers people through art.
What can fans expect from your brand-new collection? We have a beautiful new collection of rings, necklaces, braceletsand watches we are putting the finishing touches on… They will be available on our revamped website soon.
What changes have you witnessed in the jewellery industry recentlyand how do you see it evolving? One of the most significant changes is the popularity of lab-grown diamonds. Known as CVD and HPHT diamonds, more and more people on a budget are requesting them. We will continue to see increasing demand for them going forward.
Up next for Chris Aire? We’re expanding our online presence and hope to serve people worldwide through a hybrid approach that includes virtual and live interactions. Covid-19 changed how the world conducts businessand we want to adapt to the changing business environment.
Chris’s top tips for the top engagement ring! 1. Do your research. There’s a common misconception among some consumers that a bigger diamond or gemstone is always better. However, you can have a diamond or a gemstone that is only about a caratand is just as valuable, if not more so, than a five-carat stone of lower quality.
2. I’m a big fan of quality over quantity, but I also respect those who want things a little bigger but cannot afford the higher price tag, so they opt for the lower or lesser quality. Whatever you prefer, ensure that you get the quality promised by your jeweler or supplier. 3. If you opt for natural diamonds, ensure they are GIA certified, as GIA-certified diamonds tend to be more accurately graded. Compare the certificate number with the inscription on your diamond girdle to be sure they match up. 4. If you have time, have your ring custom made. An engagement ring is not something you buy every day, so make it even more special by having it designed into an heirloom piece. Every love story is unique, so why not capture it in one of its most important symbols? •

B O U T I Q U E G LO B A L W E A LT H MANAGAMENT FIRM
MACMILLAN ESTAT E PLANNING A S K T H E E X P E RT W I T H SHERI MACMILLAN, CEO MacMillan Estate Planning is a boutique estate planning firm. For over 30 years our firm has worked with many affluent families to design their estate plans either in person or v i r t u a l l y. We s e r v i c e clients all over the world, focusing on Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Our goal is that, through our planning process, we can build a Strongroom to safeguard your family’s significance. Essentially, this involves the creation of a bespoke estate plan to protect the things that you care about most. We consider your ‘significance’ to be not only the assets in your estate but also those people that mean the most to you. We offer our clients the ability to plan their estate from a single location - everything they need to implement the design of their estate plan can be provided by one organisation which includes; lawyers, accountants, financial planners and insurance professionals. Like an architect, we work together holistically to build estate plans for domestic and international clients who often have a multitude of estate planning requirements. 54
Most of us are concerned about having to pay too much tax both during our lifetime and when we pass away. We sat down with CEO of MacMillan Estate Planning, Sheri MacMillan, to ask for her views on the strategies that we might consider to help us reduce our tax burden. In answering that question, I want to start by focusing on the tax exemptions that we have available to us. A tax exempt asset is one upon which you will not pay tax both through your lifetime or when you pass away. This is different to a tax deferral, where we get a tax break in the short term, but in the long run there may be tax consequences - like your RRSP for example. We often find that our clients are not optimizing tax exemption strategies because they are unaware of them. Your primary home is an asset which grows in your estate tax free for the course of your lifetime. If you sell it, irrespective of any increase in value since the time of purchase, there is no tax to pay. Equally, when you pass away and the property moves through your estate it is, again, not subject to taxation. People often find that they have more significant gains in the value of their recreational properties and wonder if they might identify them as their primary home. The answer is ‘yes’. If you have a property in B.C for example and it has greater appreciation than your home in Calgary, then we could elect that the BC property is your exempt asset and reduce the amount of tax in your estate. This is not something that you need to decide upon today. We can decide that in the year of your passing unless you sell the property during your lifetime. Whilst it can be something of a ‘drop in the ocean’ inside sizeable estates we must endeavour to make the most of our TFSA room. Like your primary home, any growth in the value of your TFSA is also tax exempt. Tax exemption strategies can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax if you take a proactive approach to planning your estate. Beyond that there are some more bespoke strategies that allow people to tax shelter part of their estate on the basis that the value sheltered can grow tax free during their lifetime and, when they die, it can pass through their estate on a tax free basis. If there is a corporation involved we can further maximise the tax savings and reduce the amount of tax that would be paid when drawing value out of the company. Many of our clients go one step further and use this strategy to grow further wealth and reduce their income tax bill through the use of an interest deduction. 55
Business owners also like to use what is known as an Estate Freeze within the design of their estate which operates to ‘freeze’ the value of their business for tax purposes at a particular moment in time. This means that the tax bill is also ‘frozen’ such that the business owner is able to plan for and take steps to mitigate the tax bill during their lifetime. Any growth in the value of the business can be attributed to the next generation both as a means of (i) deferring tax into the future and (ii) allowing a family to use multiple Lifetime Capital Gain Exemptions to further mitigate the overall amount of tax paid.
In the last couple of weeks we have witnessed the collapse of The Silicon Valley Bank. How might this event impact upon our readers’ investment portfolios? What happened with the Silicon Valley Bank was frightening because, for many, their first thoughts were of the banking crisis in 2008. Whilst Silicon Valley Bank was a fairly niche organisation in the banking world, this was still the second biggest banking failure in US history. We shouldn’t forget, of course, that over in Europe we also had one of the traditional banking heavyweights, Credit Suisse, suffering some very real issues affecting their stability to the extent that their share price was slashed and they were forced into what has been described as a ‘shotgun marriage’ with UBS. While the impact of this union remains to be seen, it could be well be significant due to their their international presence. The extent to which these recent events in the financial world will impact your investment portfolio will depend on the geography of where you invest, the specific sectors that your investments are held in and how proactive you have been about implementing protective measures for your assets and investments. We are always looking at ways to protect our clients’ assets in a way that makes the most sense for them, their family and their long-term goals . This type of mindset will become more pronounced during times of economic uncertainty and we are able to utilise 56
various strategies to protect our clients’ investments both when times are good and during periods of volatility.
How would somebody best protect their assets during times of uncertainty? Proactive planning is imperative to ensure the protection of your personal assets. This is not something that should be done as a sudden reaction to market volatility – rather a mindset that is adopted to your portfolio at all times. From an estate planning perspective, using trusts is a great way to do this because you are essentially able to create a fence or a barrier around your assets. A trust is a legal relationship between the trustees, who manage the trust and the beneficiaries who are entitled to benefit from the assets within the trust. They can be built in several ways, and used in several ‘arenas’, to help to safeguard your estate. Many of our clients come to MacMillan Estate Planning when they have concerns about losing their assets due to unforeseen and unpredictable economic events. In situations like the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank, we will often recommend that our clients explore the use of trusts within their overall investment strategy. The reason for this is that these particular kinds of trusts are governed by the general principles of Trust Law as well as The Insurance Act which means that they carry less risk than more traditional investments all whilst providing several benefits that offer both protection and reassurance for the investor. Trust Planning is, of course, not restricted just to the investment of cash assets. Trusts can be used to protect all kinds of assets – it could be real estate, company shares or life insurance value. The assets held by the trust are protected from external forces. Equally, trusts can be used as part of your estate plan during your lifetime, and then beyond, to protect family wealth as it transitions to your beneficiaries through your Will.
MacMillan Estate Planning Corp. will be hosting a complimentary Estate Planning Webinar on Thursday, April 26th, May 31st and June 21st, to register, please visit www.macmillanestate.com or call 1-833-266-6464. 57
Lucy Crane Presents
RESTORING YOUR ENERGY FOR LIFE When you reignite your glow from within, you reignite your glow from without.
As women, it is no wonder our emotions get challenged over and over again throughout our years on earth. The vast hormonal changes as we move through the childbearing years; the dependable roles we take on as we raise children and young people while supporting our significant others and reaffirming our worth through our chosen professions and the often sudden emotional and physical toll on our bodies when we move into our later years. The physical toll on our bodies and minds can manifest in disconnection, disillusionmentand a feeling of being held captive in lifestyles that are depleting us rather than restoring us. Our energy often ends up channeled into surviving, leaving us fatigued and our inner glow dimmed. Often, before we know it, we are struggling to find a way to restore balance that can seem
58
completely out of our grasp. Remembering how to refill our own cups when we have spent most of our adult lives ensuring everyone else’s are kept full is one of the greatest challenges we face. But the good news is that it can be restored. And all it requires is you, your willingness to be still and listen to your own bodyand your commitment to yourself as the central pillar of your world. That’s why this month we have asked Lucy Crane, founder of ‘The Restorative Alignment Method’ to share her top tips on how you can re-energise physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionallyand bring greater joy, purpose, fulfillment, peace and harmony to live your best life, whatever stage you are at in life. “Happiness isn’t in what we find, it’s in what we feel.”
Tips for Total Energetic Realignment & Holistic Living Aligning the Physical Body
Beginning with our diets, we can choose a healthy and wholesome way of balancing the way our bodies digest and metabolize. Replace poor snacking habits which can lead to exhaustion and physical depletion with a high percentage of wholesome, naturaland plant-based foods along with plenty of high-quality protein. Drink pure water throughout the day, limit caffeine intakeand give your digestive system a chance to reboot by allowing some hours of fasting every day. Hand in hand with intentional eating goes physical exercise and the importance of moving our physical bodies with just the right amount of regularity and exertion. If physical exercise isn’t a regular habit of yours, start by committing to a daily walk every morning and/or evening in nature. The effect of the natural world is profound and can give you a wonderful, uplifting yet calming boost of energy. It also influences our energetic vibration, aligning us to so much more abundance and happiness.
Aligning the Spiritual Body
Bringing a sense of calm and re-energisation to the entire nervous system begins with aligning the spiritual energetic system. Meditation is the most powerful way to slow down the mind and the body. If you are new to meditation, try sitting in a comfortable position with your eyes closedand bring your attention to your breath. Slow your breathing while taking long, deep inhalesand then breathe out slowly. Begin with just five minutes of sitting and focusing on your breath each day, extending it to ten as you become more comfortable with the process. If you feel that your energy still feels too flighty, grounding yourself will help no end. The best way to ground is to stand on the earth in bare feet. Try taking a walk in the garden first thing in the morning and let the fresh dew bathe your bare feet while you connect with the earth and the nature around you.
Aligning the Emotional Body
Breathing properly is one of the most underrated yet powerful ways of restoring a healthy mind-body balance. With that comes a sense of deep well being in your souland deep sense of groundedness in your emotions.
59
Inhale slowly, deep into your diaphragm to the count of four, hold for a count of twoand then count slowly to four again as you exhale. Do this every morning before you begin your day and any time you feel your emotions becoming charged or out of balance to quickly bring about a sense of peace, centrednessand inner equilibrium.
Aligning the Mental Body
The mental body is all about awareness and intentional living. Using mindfulness meditation as a regular practice can help you to grow a general sense of mindfulness in your daily life. This includes the gentle method of focusing on your breath, as described above, but can also include walking meditation, in which you take time to notice everything from the feeling of each part of your foot touching the ground and leaving it again, to everything that surrounds you. Mindfulness also means reaching within and learning to listen to the messages our body and intuition is telling us. When something doesn’t feel right, instead of fighting it, give that feeling space and honour it. It’s telling you something important. Respecting the messages our intuition tells us helps us to live with greater clarity and intention - knowing what we want and don’t wantand being willing to voice those.
What it Means to Live an Aligned Life
Physical depletion and exhaustion can often be the result of the emotional, mental and spiritual energy systems having been wrung dry. This is where holistic realignment and restoration comes into play. When you are able to recalibrate, restore and realign your life to one of true alignment (underpinned by intention and strategy), you no longer need to escapeand instead are able to breathe life back into yourself and your dreams. You will cultivate inner peace, radiating self-love, acceptance, happiness and health. You will experience what living a life reflecting your true values feels like, opening your eyes to new opportunities, an elevated quality of life and an enriched sense of being. You will trust in yourself, your choicesand your next moves, which will positively impact every area of your life, career, relationships and home. And I promise…Your world and all that you are currently experiencing with it will change with you. When you reignite your glow from within, you reignite your glow from without. Think you’re too old to model? think again! You CAN shimmy down that catwalk, whatever your age or ability, even if you’re wheelchair-bound like our shining ‘star of Surrey Fashion Week 2022’, two-time Paralympian London Fashion Week model and world-class tennis player Louise Hunt.
Words | Angela Sara West
With Hollywood and high-profile TV and soap stars strutting their stuff on the runway, too, last September’s Surrey Fashion Week UK’s Celebrity Charity Catwalk Show saw a plethora of famous faces walk an inclusive Fashion Week.
84
From a ‘Bond’ star making his modelling debut, an Emmy Award-winning teen and fashionista babies, to a former Miss Great Britain and Miss World runner-up showing she’s still got it at the grand ‘young’ age of 78, we also saw a world-famous toddler and even debonair dogs dashing down our diverse catwalk! Our star studded event featured a vast array of brands, models and musicians, all uniting for Surrey Fashion Week UK (SFW) at fabulous Great Fosters in Egham, a mere stone’s throw away from royal residence Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world…
Tennis Champ Andy Murray from Surrey Supports SFW
What’s more, Louise wasn’t the only well-known tennis player on board our philanthropic event - former World no.1 tennis player, Surrey-based Andy Murray, is also a supporter of SFWand signed one of his coveted luxury AMC x Castore sports shirts exclusively for us to auction off in aid of Mind mental health, our chosen charity for SFW22, in our accompanying silent auction. Surrey born, bred and based, I was proud to co-found Surrey Fashion Week @surreyfashionweekuk in 2022, following the success of the first celebrity charity catwalk show I brought to my stunning home county during London Fashion Week (LFW) in September 2021 with a LFW designer and all-singing, all-dancing American Pussycat Doll, Kimberly Wyatt, as featured in Stately last year.
Showcasing Sustainable Fashion with a Surrey-based Pussycat Doll
Our SFW22 concept show, combining fashion with music and dance (plus a spot of VIP shopping for our second instalment last September) stemmed from the success of the starry fashion and music event I’d brought to my home county the previous year with Surrey-based Kim and her pro model husband Max Rogers. That inaugural celebrity charity fashion event kicked off with a phenomenal promo photoshoot with former all-girl band member Kim and her hubby Max Rogers to promote our first 2021 celebrity charity catwalk show during London Fashion Week that September. Striking a pose in beautiful ethical outfits, Kim & Max inspired fans with a passion for fashion to start taking it slow and say ‘no’ to fast fashion in our multi-page shoot and video at the photogenic fairy-tale castle venue, Horsley Towers, close to the sprawling picturesque Surrey Hills.
Our exclusive 2021 event was fittingly held in aid of late fashion royalty, Dame Vivienne Westwood’s Cool Earth charity, raising not only awareness of the issues caused by ‘fast fashion’ and the importance of shopping sustainably, but also seeing all profits from ticket sales and the accompanying silent auction go to the world-famous fashion designer’s fundraiser, which strives to keep the rainforest standing and help halt climate change. Set amidst acres of Surrey parkland, complete with a terrace, lawn and lake, Surrey’s sprawling De Vere Horsley Estate was designed and built in 1820 by Sir Charles Barry, architect of London’s Houses of Parliamentand it’s no wonder its spectacular estate’s spiralling towers have starred in Netflix’s hit show ‘The Crown’. Horsley Towers oozes history and heritage at every turn… plus a panoramic terrace with picture-perfect views over its extensive grounds.
85
“I LOVED doing this shoot!” Kim told me. “I love living in Surrey and discovering gorgeous places like this in Horsley!” she said of the jaw-dropping estate. “What a gem… just dripping in elegance and history…”
Star-studded SFW22 Inclusive & Diverse Catwalk for Mind From fast fashion to mental health, SFW 2022’s theme illustrated the importance of inclusivity and diversity in fashionand yet again showed that Surrey ROCKS when it comes to style! Our chosen charity for our first official Surrey Fashion Week (SFW) show in September 2022 in collaboration with Surrey Rocks was Mind mental health charity and, on a mission to make it an inclusive show, our mix of celebrity and pro models came in all shapes and sizes, as well as ages and abilities, too. Aged from just 14 to almost 80and with pooches and a Paralympian whizzing along the runway in her wheelchair too, our diverse show really was inclusive to all. With sustainability still very much a buzzword, we ensured there was a touch of sustainability too, with a nod to what needs to continue as a trend to help save our planet. Hosting the stars, SFW22 saw not only a celebrity catwalk show take place, but also a premium ‘Bond Street’ shopping experience at the stunning Surrey venue. And what a fab night of fashion, shopping, music and dancing we had…
Going Glam at Great Fosters
The shining setting for our second SFW philanthropic show? Great Fosters in Egham, Surrey, just a short catwalk hop away from the wonderful Windsor Castle. The perfect luxury setting for this fab high-fashion event, where better for the best of Surrey’s clothing collections to grace a glittering runway than Great Fosters…
86
Set in 50 acres of stunning gardens and parkland, including a listed topiary garden and Saxon moat, this endlessly charming Tudor estate is steeped in royal history… the instantly recognisable red-brick façade and chimney tops a true sight to behold. Boasting an outdoor pool and Utopia Spa, where you can enjoy a range of holistic beauty and wellbeing therapies from the Temple Spa product line, inspired by the sunny shores of the Mediterranean, the Great Fosters
Estate is the flagship establishment in the famous Alexander Hotel Group. With Windsor Castle nearby, this 5-star retreat is a fitting venue for fans of fashion, food and royalty, boasting a much-revered Michelin-starred restaurant, too. Great Fosters offers plenty of real log fires and fantastic festive décor during winter, owith private rooms dressed up to the nines, plus glorious outdoor space to enjoy during the spring and summer months. Listed parterres, a fountain, Saxon moat, Japanese bridge… there’s even a sundial gifted to the Estate by Sir Francis Drake himself. This regal five-star boutique country house also boasts a magnificent outdoor pool and hot tub for the mansion’s guests to lounge around or take a dip in.
Strictly’s Oti Mabuse & Marius Iepure & Other Celebs Grace The Red Carpet
Our star-studded show, sponsored by Hampton Court Gin and our ‘Made In Chelsea’ TV star model Amelia Mist’s off-screen workplace London Cru’s newly-launched wine spritzer LDN SPRITZ, was a truly exclusive red-carpet affair. The exquisite venue saw our glitzy guests greeted with a glass of artisan gin or bubbly before rubbing shoulders with the stars of Surrey and beyond. SFW22’s coveted VIP guest list boasted two-time BBC ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ (the UK’s equivalent of ‘Dancing with The Stars’) glitter-ball winner, professional dance champion Oti Mabuse (now a respected judge on reality TV shows ‘Dancing On Ice’ and ‘The Masked Dancer’) and her ‘Strictly’ pro dancer husband Marius Iepure, who modelled that evening, proudly supported by his two-time ‘Strictly’ pro champion wife on front row, along with numerous other showbiz names. ‘Bond’ stars, ‘Strictly’ stars, ‘Made In Chelsea’ stars, Sky Sports presenters and BBC Football commentators, BAFTA-winning singers, Emmy Award-winning actors, racing drivers, famous Emmy Award-winning actors and more gathered at Great Fosters that night… Also rocking up to our venue for the evening was the glamorous Goddess Jessica Monaco, an internationally published cover model and philanthropic actress who has represented Kingston in Miss Great Britain, jaw-droppingly dressed in a sparkly LBD complete with a super-stylish hood.
Our dress code? ‘Glam’, of course! And there were more requisite sequins than you could shake a designer skirt at as well-known and well-heeled red-carpet arrivals posed for photographers and our videographers to the strains of Surrey’s super cool jazz singer Mikey JC - who does a mean ‘Michael Bublé’! serenading guests already inside our glittering venue. With our theme of mental health and making fashion and modelling accessible for all in mind, we secured stars including two-time Paralympian Louise Hunt (modelling in her wheelchair), former Miss Great Britain and Miss World runner-up Kathleen Rightron (now 78)and Victoria Feathersone Pearce, founder of dog charity K-9, rocking the runway and representing the fabulous over-50’s. Vegan influencer Victoria co-founded her incredible dog rescue charity @ thek9angels over a decade ago and won ‘Influencer of the Year’ at last year’s London Lifestyle Awards. Walking her Romanian rescue dogs on our runway, another couple of K-9 Angels were there, too, including sizzling singer Pola Pospieszalska and our world-famous headline performer that night, Jo O’Meara, who bravely carried out a ‘wing walk’ last year in aid of the canine cause. “To raise awareness and be a voice for the voiceless is something I’m very passionate about”, she told me.

Walking for Ukraine Our Ukrainian model, ‘Little Lady in Big Business’ Tetiana Doronina, is a Surrey-based TV presenter and certified luxury brand strategist. She’s also a finalist in Mrs Ukraine International 2022, but the event was cancelled due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The then-pregnant Tetiana walked with her famous fashion-donning toddler son David in tow. The Britain-based Ukrainian is also a social activist, so I invited the high-profile businesswoman to give a brief talk about the crisis in her homelandand she thanked us all profusely for Britain’s support for Ukraine since the war began. Born in Kyiv, his model mum Tetiana is also co-founder of the British-Ukrainian Business Women Association (BUBWA) which supports Ukrainian businesswomen temporarily in the UK through its specifically-developed programme.
Wrapping up the Runway The final round finished flamboyantly with a full-on finale. Everyone put their hands together as our male models lined up on the ramp, along with our token lady model Lottie, all suitably suited’n’booted in high-profile men’s fashion brand Howard & Co. showcasing its finest handcrafted attire teamed with gorgeous handmade shoes. Love Islander-turned-boxing-pro. ‘The One & Only’ Idris Virgo, who has starred on ‘The Challenge’ & ‘Catfish’, looked dashingly dapper donning his go-to fashion brand, making a smart and stylish statement alongside ‘Strictly’ stars Marius and Leandro, ‘Bond’ star Jason Burrill and TV soap actor Matt Lapinskas, actor/model Craig Mearing, Richard Colvill and the brand’s founder Darran, not forgetting the lovely Lottie, all looking SHARP AS in smart suits and shoes on our star-studded catwalk.
The After-Party Following a fab fashion-filled evening, it was time to partyand our supercool DJ duo, Stan & Jack Mitchell, The Mitchell Brothers of ‘Love Puppy’, Ministry of Sound and Blue Marlin Ibiza fame, who have played alongside industry legends at Pacha, Egg and The Cross (London) too, made sure everyone did just that. As top tunes span on the decks, the dancefloor filled with fashionistas and a whole host of famous party guests, while others tucked into mouth-watering delights and tantalising
treats from the bar, where I’d also arranged for an innovative 360 video booth to offer a special spot of amusement. A popular hotspot for fun videos by the 360videobooth team, whose cutting-edge technology is very much en vogue, this 360-degree tech was enjoyed throughout the eventful evening by both our stars and guests alike!
Silent Auction of Star Experiences Our hugely-successful fashion event over, the spotlight then shone on our sizzling silent auction accompanying our star-studded show, also in aid of Mind mental health charity and supporting the Surrey fashion brands who showcased. Our celebrity charity silent auction featured fantastic prizes of VIP experiences and premium products from select Surrey and London businesses and beyond, including a signed AMC x Castore sports top from Surrey’s tennis champ Andy Murray, a signed album by SFW22 show headliner Jo O’Meara and so much more!
That’s a Wrap! And just like that… that was a wrap for Surrey Fashion Week 2022. It was great to have so many fantastic fashion brands on board and the Surrey Rocks Editor Samand I are really pleased to be able to give back something to Surrey fashion from this unique night with the stars, by helping our county’s incredibly talented fashion scene. Proceeds from our accompanying celebrity silent auction fundraising also went directly to our participating local fashion boutiques. With such boutiques fast disappearing from our high streets, we were SO proud to have brought another spectacular unique fashion and music show to our stunning home county of Surrey.
Ukraine Fundraiser at Prince Zylinski’s White House London Our subsequent collaborative fundraising gala took place this February at Polish Prince Zylinski’s unique palatial home, The White House London. Marking the anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine, Surrey Rocks and I assisted our aforementioned Ukrainian SFW model, Tetiana, to raise funds to help Ukrainian children and adults through her BUBWA Association (which works with the Medway charity) as well as international charity Hospices of Hope, with whom I work closely. The charity, which has a US & Canada office in New York, is currently fundraising to build a much-needed new hospice in
war-torn Ukraine. My glitzy VIP guestlist included Hollywood actor River Hawkins, who has starred in ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’, ‘C.S. Lewis: Beyond Narnia’ and ‘Manolo, The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards’and also directed and produced ‘The Humen’ series featuring Hollywood heavyweight and Surrey resident Bill Nighy, along with ‘Big Brother’ winner-turned-‘Bond’ star Jason Burrill and actress/social media sensation Chloe Khan. The evening also raised funds for the Prince’s campaign to build a memorial in central London to commemorate the RAF Polish pilots who helped win the Battle of Britainand featured an exciting live auction. Phenomenal prizes included a signed t-shirt from Ukrainian President Zelenskyy (the one he wore at the beginning of the war), along with signed boxing gloves from high-profile Ukrainian boxer Oleksandrovych Usyk up for grabs in aid of the first lady of Ukraine’s charity, the Olena Zelenska Foundation. Our justlaunched silent auction for Hospices of Hope also offers fantastic prizes of celebrity experiences and signed items live, as well as kindly donated luxury prizes.
Jo O’Meara Thrills - S Club Star’s New Music Launch Party The glamourous evening at Great Fosters was also the launch party for BRIT Award-winning S Club 7 star & solo artist Jo O’Meara’s new music, seeing her first live performance of her Halloween track, a cover of Michael Jackson’s hit ‘Thriller’ to mark the 40th anniversary of the song’s release. Eton, Windsor, United Kingdom
A WHIRLWIND THROUGH ETON Written by Tony McGrath We spent a memorable break on our trip to England in Windsor and Eton which is 20 miles west of London and a logical final stop for our trip because of its proximity to Heathrow Airport, a 15-minute cab ride away. Built as a fortress, Windsor is at once imposing, overwhelming and over-the-top opulent. We spent hours wandering around the place and somehow we still felt like we had only soaked up a tiny fraction of its history Located on the banks of the River Thames, Windsor Castle is famous for being one of the official residences of Queen Elizabeth II and stark in our memory was her passing on the afternoon of our departure. This fame and its proximity to Central London has made it overwhelmingly popular among tourists. This perspective seems to quieten when you cross the bridge that separates Windsor and Eton. The bridge takes you into a much calmer historic town that has that “je ne sais quoi”. It presents as intellectual and quintessentially British. With a rich heritage, beautiful surrounding countryside and history that connects both towns Eton is like stepping through a gate back in time into a small English university town with gowned boys from the historic Eton College wandering the streets along with tweed wearing, pipe smoking academic school masters. Cobbled streets and historic buildings that truly take 90 you back to an almost innocent era of elegance, this
is a working, living town with high end shops intermingled with traditional English butchers, bakers and candlestick makers. We wanted to experience a boutique hotel in such a deeply historic setting. We wanted a boutique bolthole. Boutique: it is a term that gets bandied around with abandon these days but what exactly does it mean when it comes to hotels? For us, it all comes down to a sense of individuality — intriguing design, personal service, attention to detail and great locations are all important, of course, but above all the very best boutique hotels have a sense of character that the big chain hotels cannot match. In many ways, they are as much an experience as a place. We opted for a townhouse. Townhouse hotels hark back to the time when country-based aristocrats would head to London for extended visits. These days in England they are designed to be informal; a Bridgerton-style mash-up of venerable and modish; a happy marriage between history and newer expectations of hospitality. Our choice was Gilbey’s Bar and Restaurant which has occupied an understated spot on Eton High Street, just a five-minute beautiful stroll from the famous Eton College and Windsor Castle.
91
Yet few people realise that there is a lavish studio apartment tucked away within its rafters. From this lofty position you can even spy the castle turrets peeking over Eton’s rooftops. While the overall design of Gilbey’s is stylish – think cosy townhouse meets French bistro – the apartment’s cream and claret décor is truly luxurious. Up here can be found antique furniture, hand-painted Oriental vases and intricate wood carvings – all sourced by co-owner Lin Gilbey from an Eton antiques emporium. It’s like staying in the home of a rich, well-travelled and impeccably stylish friend. The apartment is wholly self-contained, but the staff are quick to offer assistance if needed. They are friendly and know the area well. Windsor and Eton have some lovely restaurants but you should venture no further than downstairs to Gilbey’s which will be buzzing with locals – even on weeknights. Co-owner Michael Gilbey has curated the wine list himself: don’t miss the very quaffable Pheasants Ridge Brut from grapes grown in Gilbey’s own Chilterns vineyard. Best of all, the townhouse is run almost like a lovely family home with someone on hand to look after you as much, or as little, as you like across your stay. This was without doubt one of the nicest stays in the London area that we can remember. We strolled the banks of the Thames to watch the elegant white swans glide along the river like they have for centuries on a typical sunny but drizzly morning before we sadly took our leave. She writes and speaks on a variety of leadership topics that include: Empowering Women, Attracting Top Talent, Leading Remote Teams, Imposter Syndrome and Executive Presence. Dr. Wahler earned a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa. She is a Certified Organizational Psychologist with a Major in Leadership Development at Ontario College of Psychologists since 1987. “I see myself as a serial entrepreneur. I do believe that many of our skills are transferable. It is also very affirming to be able to pivot and add other dimensions to your life and career. I trained originally as a clinical psychologist. I wanted to start my own business which, looking back, was risky because I had no network and no true business acumen.
Many people around me projected their own fears and wondered whether I would make it out there in a highly competitive world. I hung out my shingle and ran a very successful practice treating adults for what I would call ‘challenges in daily living’. Anxiety, relationship difficulties, depression, work-related stress, etc. From scratch, I built a network of referring physicians and within 16 months I had a waiting list. It was a very rewarding experience helping and supporting others to develop new coping skills. Which then brought me to my next chapter. After about 10 years I decided to switch gears and transfer my skill set to the corporate arena helping executives on Bay and Wall Street become effective leaders. We know that the ability to drive results is all about influencing others. Interpersonal skills and the right leadership attributes are paramount. It is now over 18 years that I have been running my own leadership consulting practice and I have written over 100 articles, many of which have been published in Forbes and other media. In addition to running my leadership practice, I am also a published author. 2021 was an extraordinary year for me. In 2021 I published a book on leadership entitled 20 Effective Habits for Mastery At Work https://
www.amazon.ca/20-Effective-Habits-MasteryWork/dp/1777589401I Along the way I have met some very talented leaders in almost every sector and wanted to share my insights on what constitutes great leadership. I have had the privileged opportunity to present and speak at many events on key excerpts from my book on what defines successful leaders. Now, this takes me to my next special moment this past year! Of all crazy things, I launched a home-based custom cookie business. I am on Instagram @bite.me.cookie This endeavour could not be further from my leadership business and provides a different kind of creative outlet. A year ago I knew nothing about how to create, designand promote a cookie business let alone being familiar with Instagram. The learning curve was steep and daunting. Many people said to me “We don’t get it!” but I am thriving in my cookie business and have expanded to being able to offer over 20 cookie flavours. Additionally, I expanded my offerings to include many other baked goods such as Truffle Brownies, four different types of Cheesecake, which includes Dulche De Leche, Chocolate Ganache, Raspberry, Strawberry, Toffee Explosion Squares and Apple Pie Bars and much more.”

C
indy, Tell us about yourself.
I am driven by curiosity. I believe that the more curious we are the more we experience opportunities in life. I don’t believe that anything and everything is possible, but I don’t want to have regrets in life when I haven’t tried something and so I’m prepared to take risks, fail and dust myself off and learn from the failure. Along the way I have tried things that I had limited or no experience with in life. Of course, there are always naysayers. They would say, “Cindy, what if it doesn’t work out?” “What if it’s too difficult?”. That spurs me on and motivates me to even try harder when I get that kind of feedback. Although there are rules in life and processes and procedure, I like to break rules. Sometimes I don’t understand the rules and that is why I never made a great employee. I believe that I failed as an employee because I just thought that there sometimes are better, more efficient ways of doing things. And I wanted to be able to be self-employed to be able to branch out that way.
From psychologist to top-level business advisor to cookie entrepreneur and best-selling author, where do you get the motivation to pivot into such diverse areas of business?
The secret is I am an overachiever. I am not a high achiever. I am an overachiever and the dynamics of people like me is that our resting state is agitation. I am never content - in the sense that I want more. And so after I have mastered something, I enjoy the fulfillment of that mastery but then I think of what else is possible. And so as I trained as a Clinical Psychologist I understand what motivates and what drives us. I come from a family of business entrepreneurs and so I thought that I could take my skill set and transfer it. I focused on understanding human nature and helping leaders and teams with succession planning, talent planning, being the best leaders and getting the most out of their team in terms of employee engagement, productivity, morale and discovering how we can improve the world, through whatever the industry is that I am assisting with. The book is really based on everything my clients have taught me over the years about what great leadership is. So I took their learnings and their teachings around what works and what is effective as a leader. How do you influence? 96
How do you impact? How do you motivate others? How do you help people advance in their careers? I thought that it would be of tremendous value to put their thoughts and ideas into a publication that could be shared amongst those who are early on in their careers or, along the continuum, those who continue to want to enhance their careers.
Amazing and the cookies?
I needed something to feed my soul. I have always loved baking. The beauty of the cookies is that I get up super early in the morning at 4 am. It’s quiet time. It is just me and the dough that I create. I started with about 10 different flavors of cookies though I have now expanded to over 20 flavors. Beyond that I also do other baked goods as you can see from my Instagram page. These are just based on customer demands. They’ll call up and say, “Cindy, can you do this?” And I say “yes”, even though I think, Oh my God how am I gonna do this? But that is part of my overachieving - wanting to see if it is possible. This led to my branchingout into Cheesecakes, lemon bar squares, raspberry crumble, chocolate chunk cookie bars and many many other different options.
How did COVID affect your business and how did you react when it hit?
COVID was a blockbuster year for me. 2021 was exactly when I launched my cookie business. It was also when I published my book. I had more time and more flexibility because my schedule was, in essence, more efficient. Leadership coaching continued but I didn’t have the same travel time because everything was on Webex, Zoom and Teams. So I had all this time and, as I mentioned, I am not very good at being idle. So this was when I wrote the book and launched the cookie business. I thought that Bite.me.cookie would be a good way to take some risks in that time period.
In what ways do those close to you help you create challenges for yourself?
They’re extremely supportive and my family and friends are intrigued and sometimes they are in disbelief at how I push myself. It is about taking challenges but they are my greatest cheerleaders. They are super supportive. They help edit the book. They help test flavors and spread the message. They are enthusiastic and, most importantly, they aremy allies.
What relationship has been the most meaningful to you during your career so far?
My family relationship, of course. As I mentioned they stand stridently behind me. My son, for example, is the photographer for bite.me.cookie. He is very creative himself and he takes most of the pictures. He inspires me because some of the photos are incredible in terms of the concept and what goes on in his head and how he creates. In terms of leadership coaching the inspiration has to come from my mentors along the way, from schooling to business mentors. I have two or three mentors and colleagues who’ve been particularly supportive. I would say from the business community some of the senior executives have been my inspiration.
How did your friends and family react when you decided on bite me cookie? They were stunned because it was such a change, it was such a pivot. They were gobsmacked. They looked at me and thought I was joking and that this couldn’t be true. How could you? How would you start? What was really overwhelming to me was that I didn’t have an Instagram account. I didn’t even know anything about Instagram and so I had to start from scratch. Everything from naming the business to being able to build an Instagram account to figuring out how to promote to the market and attain visibility in a very crowded space with other home bakers who do similar things. Everyone was supportive but also shocked at the same time.
What are you planning to do next?
I would like to continue to grow the business, create more visibility and, as customers ask me for products, expand my product offerings. So in terms of what’s next I will probably just continue to maintain consistency and have my brand out there.
How do you decide when it’s time to do something new or take on a new challenge? Is it because you are just bored or because you achieved so much?
That’s a great question. I am prone to boredom. I have a very low threshold for boredom. So when I thought about my leadership coaching and my leadership consulting business I thought it would be a good idea to put this in writing and share the wisdom. The feedback that I have received on the book is that it is extremely practical. It tells you what to do and what not to do. It is not theoretical and it is not academic. So that was a drive and the
drive behind the cookies is that I always made cookies, for my family, my son and his friends. And, again, this was an opportunity to put this into a business even though people around me questioned it. My answer is always why not? Sometimes people project their own fears onto you. They’re scared. And so am I. But I want to go forward.
How do you think your childhood influenced your career and life path?
My family had very high standards. My parents didn’t tell me what to do or what not to do but there was an expectation that we worked hard, that we were humble, that we had humility and that we would find happiness in life. The path of how to get there wasn’t really prescribed, which was great, and which is probably why I get to do different things and have that fluid way of approaching the world. But I would say that my parents were optimistic. Positive individuals are part of my DNA.
What was the most significant moment with bite. me.cookie?
There probably are two or three significant moments. One was actually launching it. When it actually came to be and it was in the public domain that was significant. And then as orders came in that were beyond family and friends. Getting orders from outside of family and friends was pretty amazing. I now have a consistent core group of customers who continually purchase cookies and other baked goods. That is a huge endorsement. Those are the big moments. Talking to you, being able to have the privilege and the honor to be part of STATELY Magazine is truly a treasure and something that I feel excited and proud of.
97
At what point did you realise it was more than just cookies?
The busier I got and the more exposure I received made me realize that this is not recreational. This is an actual business. When my baking hours went from one day a week to 5-6 days a week it dawned on me that this is absolutely a reality. The media coverage that I am getting from you and others absolutely confirmed that this is a significant opportunity and venture.
You said “it feeds my soul”. At what point did you realize it wasn’t just a business?
That’s another great question. I think, primarily, it has to do with being able to take raw ingredients and create magic. To me, it is magic. Taking raw ingredients and creating a finished product that has aesthetic appeal and which appeals to our other senses. That has beauty to it. The other thing is that it is wonderful to bring joy to people. It is not only about buying cookies - it is also about how we treat ourselves. Part of it is just enjoying what you feel is special to you and, to me, the cookies are special.
In what way or ways are you a different person now than you were when you first became a psychologist?
I think I always have that drive and I have learned that is never going to go away. There is a level of intensity and passion about
me. What has changed is my level of confidence and self-assuredness. Taking risks and being bold, as you say, has helped because it is not that I haven’t failed and it is not that I haven’t made mistakes. I have done all those things but I have been able to pivot and readjust from those mistakes as I learn. That has given me confidence. It allows you to connect differently with people because you connect on not just what you do for a living as your primary occupation. You connect on many levels. I think that has made me even more fulfilled as I have been able to attract people from different arenas who are not neccessarily doing leadership coaching but other corporate work. So I believe that it has made me more self-assured and hopefully taking me to a better place whilst making me more well-rounded. Overlla, I am just happier because I enjoy having different ways to occupy my time and that challenge me.
How have these experiences impacted the decisions you make today? You said that you started with cookies because it was something that made you happy so you essentially said “yes” to happiness?
I say yes to happiness. I always say yes to exploration. Yes to curiosity. Yes to happiness. Yes to risk. Yes to trying. Yes. What’s worse is that you don’t like something? The worst is that you failand so then I join a group of every human being who has failed. There isn’t one person that has not failed at some point, right? We all have.
Name the top two or three lessons you’ve learned from your experience.
This is fun. I am having fun. Be selective in terms of the feedback you receive from others. Be open to feedback. I don’t know everything. You are constantly on a learning curve and so you need to be open to feedback. The more people you talk to, the more they teach you, the more they mentor you the more they help shape your ideas. So being open to feedback, then being selective with the feedback, because it doesn’t mean that all of it is appropriate. I guess it just sort of reinforces my mantra that I don’t want to have any major regrets in life and so that is sort of what this whole journey of switching from a clinical psychologist to doing leadership development, leadership coaching, writing a book, delivering webinars through to baking has taught me. I don’t want to have any regrets. My biggest regret, and my dream way back when, was to be a saxophone player in a jazz club. But number one, I am not musically inclined, so I started with a guitar and it sounded exactly like I was playing out of a guitar book 101. That would have been my dream. That is why I don’t believe we can do everything and I don’t believe practice makes perfect either. There are certain skill sets that are innateand so instead I am a huge lover of jazz and attend many jazz festivals. I think that goes with my belief that there has to be a certain level of humility in how we see ourselves. There are certain strengths we have and others that we just have to accept are not going to be a possibility. 98
I think people who suggest things are limitless and that anything is pos-
The other piece of advice that I would give is to stop comparing yourself because, when we compare ourselves, it is a losing proposition. Don’t compare and just be you. The huge media machine that is social media and how it compares and ranks you with other businesses - that is the unhealthy part.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
I guess the best advice I have been given is to maintain my passion and my intensity but, at the same time, make sure that I am thorough and have researched the subject or the area that I want to pursue so that I have an appropriate business case and business model to maximize my success.
Anything else to impart to our readers?
People who have energy are attractive. They are compelling. People want to be around others who have energy because it inspires and motivates them. It’s positive. It gets them to take risks. Part of my nature is to just naturally invest energy in social and professional situations and build those connections.
Thank you so much for taking the time, I can’t wait to see where your career takes you next.
sible actually set up a level of stress on that person and it becomes defeating. We all have diverse talents and we all have different streams in which we can excel.
So what would you say to someone who is in the position you were in before Bite.me.cookie? You had already achieved a huge amount yet found youself feeling and looking for the next challenge.
I would suggest that people look at their skills in a very narrow way. I am a pianist. I am a botanist. I am a chemist. I am a software engineer. What we need to think about is that a lot of our skills are transferable. So (1) figure out what your skills are and (2) what do you care about? What are you passionate about? What do you dream about? And then start reading, researching and talking to people and, as you talk to people, you will start to see how you can translate some of your passions, some of your skills into the next stream whether it is a paid job, a consultant type of role or whether it is just a freelance hobby. I think a good percentage of the population falls into things kind of by accident. They didn’t start out to necessarily be a coder, an engineer or a musician. They fell into it by accident. It means that I think it is just a case of going out there and partaking in those risks. A lot of us are plagued by self-doubt. We are the impostor syndrome, right? So we can’t, we won’t. It won’t work out. There are smarter, better, more attractive people. And that is true. But are you good enough? Are you smart enough? Are you compelling enough?
