OTTAWA EDITION, MAY 4–18, 2013

Spring cleaning for your resumé Spring is the season best known for cleaning, and for job searchers, it’s an ideal time to “usher out the old and bring in the new.” Randstad Canada has a few tips that could make an impact on your job search and help you ramp up for landing the perfect career opportunity. Your resume should tell your story: Employers have heard bland, generic statements such as: I’m a hard worker, I learn quickly or I’m results-oriented, many times. If your resume sticks with these clichés, how will it make hiring managers remember you? Instead, tell them interesting stories! More and more, employers conduct accomplishmentdriven interviews, and look for richness and diversity in your experience. Start by reviewing your resume and craft meaningful examples of challenges you met and solutions you have found to overcome them, without omitting the results.

CREATE A MASTER JOB APPLICATION

Save time and be ready whenever an opportunity comes up. Create a form with all of your up-to-date information, ensuring you have checked it for accuracy, grammar and spelling. Make sure to include correct addresses, job titles, employers, termination dates, contact names and phone numbers. This will be your source document for all applications.

MEET NEW PEOPLE

MANAGE YOUR OWN PERSONAL BRAND

Your online image does matter. Social media monitoring service Reppler surveyed more than 300 hiring professionals on their recruitment habits, and found that 91 per cent of employers use social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to screen job applicants. Google your name to see what comes up. Build a strong, employer-friendly presence online, by carefully selecting which content you want to post publicly. Another recent survey revealed that

Linkedin is the most popular tool amongst staffing professionals, so be sure to have a comprehensive profile, one that is errorfree and attractive. Position yourself with a catchy subject line, describe your accomplishments in a clear and impactful way, and add your skills and expertise. Incidentally, employers are interested not just in “hard” professional skills but also in “soft” human

skills, abilities and characteristics. Ask for recommendations, share interesting articles in your field and take part in groups!

GET MOBILE JOB SEARCH APPS

Utilizing the best apps, setting up job alerts, and organizing contacts on your mobile device are all excellent ways to find jobs and network with your mobile device.

Everybody uses social media to find a job or new talent, but that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from personal interactions. Reach out to your contacts and go to networking events and conferences in your field. Put together a short and compelling description of who you are and what you do. Listen and ask questions, hand out business cards and build new relationships! Word of mouth and personal referrals are still methods that work in today’s job market. Randstad Canada is the Canadian leader for staffing, recruitment and HR Services. As the only fully integrated staffing company in the country, we understand the recruitment needs and demands of employers and job seekers across all levels and industries. Through our insightful knowledge of local markets, employment trends and global network of recruitment experts, we are shaping the Canadian world of work. Visit randstad.ca. ●

To date, Partners in Growth has planted over 2.5 million trees in parks, recreation and conservation areas, and other public spaces across Canada. Established in 1990, this program was started with Scouts Canada to help replenish the environment.

Half of businesses plan to hire recent grads this year According to a BMO Bank of Montreal survey released recently, half (51 per cent) of Canadian businesses are planning to hire students or recent graduates this year. “We’ve seen more companies investing in employee training and development – in conjunction with creating long-term plans – which will help business owners ensure they have a supply of talented employees who are prepared to drive performance,” said Steve Murphy, Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking, BMO Bank of Montreal.

PLANS FOR HIRING STUDENTS AND GRADUATES

• One-third (30 per cent) of employers plan to take on a paid summer student. • One-in-five (21 per cent) plan to hire a recent graduate as a permanent employee. • Regionally, job prospects for students and graduates are the brightest in Ontario (56 per cent), followed by the Atlantic Provinces (53 per cent) and Quebec (52 per cent.) Murphy added that as many students are currently looking for summer employment, it’s encouraging to see so many Canadian companies with a noticeable appetite to hire students or recent graduates. “These organizations recognize that this group of Canadians bring a wealth of talent and passion into the workforce.”

HIRING DIFFERENCES BY SECTOR

• Business/financial (37 per cent), retail

(25 per cent) and construction (22 per cent) companies are the most likely to hire a recent graduate as a paid intern. • The service and manufacturing sectors are the most likely (35 per cent) to hire a paid summer student, followed by the agricultural sector (34 per cent) • Employers in the manufacturing industry are the most likely (25 per cent) to hire a recent graduate as a permanent employee, followed by the services (24 per cent) and retail and business/financial (23 per cent) industries. “Students and recent graduates are brimming with ideas and fresh perspectives that add value for our customers and our business,” said Lynn Roger, Chief Talent Officer, BMO Financial Group. “When they start their career at BMO – through a summer job or a more permanent role – they bring ambition and excitement, and we offer opportunities to grow in ways that are important to them, in a culture where they can truly meet their goals.” The report was conducted via Pollara with a sample of 500 Canadian business owners, conducted between February 25 and March 15, 2013. The margin of error for this survey is +/- 4.4 per cent, 19 times out of 20. Data has been weighted by region and company size, based on a December 2011 Statistics Canada Study, so that it is representative of all Canadian business owners.

Ontario’s agri-food sector gets support The federal and provincial governments are working to help Ontario’s agri-food industry grow profits, expand markets and manage risk through Growing Forward 2. “Our Government remains focused on jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for Ontario’s agriculture industry,” said Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. “Through Growing Forward 2, we are working with Ontario’s hard-working farmers to ensure that the industry has the tools available to remain competitive and innovative in new and existing markets.”

“Ontario’s agri-food industry accounts for more than 700,000 jobs.” The governments of Canada and Ontario have signed a five-year, multi-million dollar bilateral agreement focusing on innovation, competitiveness and market development. It includes $2 billion for federal-provincial-territorial strategic initiatives, which is a 50 per cent increase in cost-shared funding. “Ontario’s government is helping our agrifood industry adapt to changes in the marketplace, respond quickly to challenges and seize new opportunities,” said Premier Kathleen Wynne. “By supporting this important sector, we are strengthening rural communities and building our provincial economy so that everyone can benefit.”

Ontario’s Growing Forward 2 programs will help the industry capitalize on opportunities and contribute to the economy. Information sessions and workshops will be available in April and May, 2013, with applications opening in June 2013 for provincial programs. Governments will continue to offer ongoing funding for a complete and effective suite of business risk management programs under Growing Forward 2, to ensure farmers are protected against severe market volatility and natural disasters. Providing the right climate to attract investment, create jobs and expand industries is a key priority for the Governments of Canada and Ontario to help build a strong economy.

QUICK FACTS

• The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing a combined $417 million in Ontario’s strategic initiatives aimed at improving business and leadership skills, adapting to climate change, developing markets and investing in research and innovation. • The federal government has announced details of its three federal programs: AgriInnovation, AgriMarketing and AgriCompetitiveness. • Ontario’s agri-food industry accounts for more than $34 billion in the province’s Gross Domestic Product and provides more than 700,000 jobs. ●

Harris Institute achieves Post-Secondary milestone

ADVERTORIAL

Toronto’s Harris Institute and the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) now deliver two college Diplomas and a Master’s Degree in 32 months with scholarships and bursaries. “Our innovative partnership with UWS is a timely acceleration of the post secondary system that achieves comprehensive education and significant credentials at less cost in a shorter period of time,” says John Harris, president of Harris Institute.

“This strengthening of our strategic partnership further develops our unique brand of practice-based, industryfocused education.” Students who complete both the Audio Production Program and the Arts Management Program at Harris receive $2,500 “Music Business Professional” bursaries and $3,500 “UWS Scholarships” for Master’s Degrees in “Songwriting and Performance” or “Music: Innovation & Entrepreneurship” with $1,500 accommodation bursaries. UWS students receive full scholarships for certificate courses at Harris and work placements in Toronto. “This strengthening of our strategic part-

nership further develops our unique brand of practice-based, industry-focused education,” says Anne Gifford, UWS Dean. “Harris ‘double diploma’ graduates will achieve a Master’s qualification that has been designed with industry. This sector leading collaboration delivers value to our students and contributes to internationalism and global citizenship.” Over the past eight years, 52 Harris graduates have earned BA (Hons) Commercial Music or BSc Music Technology degrees at UWS in 8 months on full scholarships. Eighty-six UWS students have completed “field of study” work placements in Toronto. The partnership includes senior faculty exchanges and students at both institutions coordinate the “International Artist Exchange.” The University of the West of Scotland is the largest modern university in Scotland with campuses in Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton, Paisley and Glasgow. UWS provides relevant, high quality, inclusive higher education and aims to have a transformative influence on the economic, social and cultural development of the West of Scotland, and beyond. Harris Institute is an international leader in audio production and music industry education. Founded in 1989, the college was the first to introduce accelerated 12-month Diploma
