CYCLING ADVENTURISTS LOCAL FAVS

For gravel cyclists and endurance riders, Emporia is the spot to be. With a cycling culture like no other, Emporia proves that cycling is not about your destination, but the adventures along the way.

We asked cyclist Kent Schnakenberg what are his three favorite cycling activities to do in Emporia.

1 2 3 14

“Group rides! You can find a group ride almost any night, leaving from one of the three local bike shops, that caters to your cycling ability. It’s a great way to meet people!”

“Participating in the Dirty Kanza, La Grind, Tour de Lyon County and any of the numerous sponsored rides taking place in Emporia.”

“For any visitor, I would recommend just get on your bike and hit the gravel of the Flint Hills. You will enjoy the beauty!”

visitemporia.com

The endless unpaved stretches of the Flint Hills are perfect for those cyclists who want to test their limits. Emporia is the epicenter of the gravel grinding world. Every year, thousands of cyclists endure the blistering sun, steep hills and rough trails of the Flint Hills.

Whether you are here to race in the epic Dirty Kanza, or to experience the solitary beauty of the landscape for yourself, Emporia has the cycling adventure for you. The Iconic Route Series offers the perfect ride, regardless of your skill level.

MURDER ORDAINED Despite its ominous name, ‘Murder Ordained’ is a very tame, beginnerfriendly route. It is nearly pancake flat with only 249 ft. of climbing over the 13.8 miles.

KAHOLA KRUSHER Many Dirty Kanza veterans know Kahola Lake quite well, as it is featured in the final leg of many editions of the famed gravel race. This scenic route will give riders the same taste of those hills without the epic distance, it is only 53.4 miles.

THE GRIND This route is not to be taken lightly by even the most accomplished gravel riders. Riders will be completely on their own with little to no civilization in sight for the first 100 miles of its 143.1 miles before arriving in the first heart!

ART FOR EVERYONE The Emporia Arts Center (815 Commercial St.) is central to the Emporia art scene. View exhibits from local and regional artists in the Trusler Gallery or shop in the Don & Mary Glaser Art and Gift Shop. The Performing Arts Series has hosted distinguished artists, such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Shanghai Acrobats, and the Dinosaur Zoo Live.

THE NEXT GREAT ARTISTS Emporia State is home to the only 4-year degree program for the engraving arts. It is also one of the few universities in the country to offer an undergraduate degree with an emphasis in glass blowing.

GRANADA THEATRE The glitz of the historic Granada Theatre (807 Commercial St.) makes every event glamorous. This 1929 Spanish Colonial Revival theatre has been completely restored and has an atmosphere like no other place. FAMILY OUTINGS From our parks to our zoo, from concerts to swimming, we have plenty of reasons to keep kids off their phones and enjoying family time.

A NATURAL ESCAPE The David Traylor Zoo (75 Soden Rd.) is one of the most beautifully landscaped zoos in Kansas and possibly the best FREE zoo in the country. Come get lost with the animals in the botanical beauty of the park. The lemurs in the newest exhibit, Mission Madagascar, will steal your heart. Take a break from the day while the kids play and explore the Preston Forest Adventure.

COOLING OFF Looking to cool off on a hot summer day? Come take a dip at the Jones Aquatic Center (4202 W. 18th Ave.). With water slides, lazy river and zero-depth entry pool, this attraction is open daily Memorial Day to mid-August. The outdoor pool and slides can be rented out for birthdays, family reunions or group events. Or visit the Splash Pad at Peter Pan Park (S. State St. & W. Kansas Ave.) for a wet and fun experience with the kids!

FAMILY FUN Enjoy family fun with racquetball, an indoor pool, fitness room and more at the Lee Beran Recreation Center (313 W. 4th Ave.). Available for rentals.

22

ALL ABOARD Next door to the zoo, the Sertoma Miniature Train (S. Commercial at Cottonwood River) circles through Soden’s Grove Park. Hop aboard Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday evenings or Thursday mornings from May through September.

OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS Voted one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas, the Flint Hills are a special, magical place. The Flint Hills are one of the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in the world.

HOME ON THE RANGE

32

Tallgrass prairie once covered 170 million acres of North America. Within a generation, the vast majority was developed and plowed under. Today less than 4% remains, mostly here in the Kansas Flint Hills. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (Strong City) protects a nationally significant remnant of the once vast tallgrass prairie and its cultural resources. Here the tallgrass prairie takes its last stand. The preserve offers many opportunities to make a meaningful connection to the prairie and the people who lived here. See nearly 11,000 acres of wide open spaces, beautiful vistas, seasonal wildflowers, bison and native wildlife and plenty of solitude.

HISTORY BUFFS Emporia is the destination for

Emporia is a town that takes it’s history seriously. With Emporia’s historic homes, famous people and special status as the founding city of Veterans Day, there is a lot to explore for people who love the past.

34

Emporia is the official founding city of Veterans Day. Emporia celebrated the first Veterans Day in 1953, a year before congress made it a National Holiday in 1954. The idea came from Emporian Alvin J. King, who suggested the renaming of Armistice Day. Emporia Congressman Ed Rees and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, also of Kansas, took the final steps to create this reverent holiday.

Emporia is the home of

EDUCATION Teachers set us on a better path, and Emporia is where many get their start. Once known as “the Athens of the Plains” for its colleges and Carnegie libraries, Emporia is home to the National Teachers Hall of Fame and the poignant Memorial to Fallen Educators.

MEMORIAL TO FALLEN EDUCATORS Located next to Emporia State University’s One Room School Museum, the Memorial to Fallen Educators (12 W. 18th Ave., ESU Campus) is free to visit and open 24 hours a day. It is the first and only national memorial in the state of Kansas. The memorial commemorates educators who have lost their lives while serving in their professional roles.

NATIONAL TEACHERS HALL OF FAME The National Teachers Hall of Fame (1701 Morse Rd, ESU Visser Hall) recognizes and honors exceptional career teachers, encourages excellence in teaching and preserves the rich heritage of the teaching profession in the United States. The museum on the Emporia State University campus honors the

teachers inducted and is a teacher resource center.

With a rich history stretching back over 150 years, Emporia State University’s traditions have been making memories for students from around the world.

HISTORIC CAMPUS There is so much for visitors to do on the Emporia State University campus (1 Kellogg Circle, emporia.edu). Stroll though the manicured green spaces or visit the university’s many art galleries or museums. Visit their website and schedule a tour.

WELCH STADIUM Opened in 1937 and dedicated in 1960, Welch Stadium (Emporia State University Campus) is the host to Emporia State and Emporia High School football. It lies just north of beautiful Lake Wooster on the ESU campus and is home for generations of Emporia State football fans.

ESU HOMECOMING CELEBRATION Homecoming is a celebration that includes annual traditions, athletic events and a host of social gatherings. WOOSTER LAKE Enjoy a picnic or a quiet afternoon on the lawn around this picturesque lake. The FHTC Fusion Food Truck (fhtc.edu) is a popular food stop that can be found at Emporia community events in the fall and is managed and operated by FHTC Hospitality/ Culinary Arts students. FHTC is the only college in the state of Kansas that utilizes a food truck in its culinary curriculum. When classes are in session, Hospitality/Culinary Arts students also prepare and serve World and International Cuisine lunches on Thursdays at the main campus.
