The Perfect Pairing

Sommelier and owner Meg

Worthing brings wine expertise to Emporia's favorite pub

If there’s a place in Emporia “where everybody knows your name,” hands down that place is Mulready’s Pub. While beloved for its craft beers, fine whiskies, and imaginative handcrafted cocktails, Mulready’s is also carving out a new identity: a destination for wine lovers, thanks to new owner Meg Worthing’s expertise.

Worthing, a Level Three Sommelier, brings a rare and significant distinction to the local bar scene. With her leadership, Mulready’s is expanding its already impressive menu, adding wines that are as distinctive as they are approachable.

“We’ve transitioned into an actual wine program,” Worthing said. “Our focus is on affordable, different, and approachable wines–things you can’t necessarily buy at the local liquor store. We’ll eventually offer wines both by the bottle and by the glass. Mulready’s is the only bar in town with a serious wine focus.”

Becoming a Level Three Sommelier is no small feat. Worthing’s certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers required rigorous training, covering the history and geography of classic wine regions, grape varietals, wine tasting, and serving techniques. Her efforts are paying off in big ways for Emporia’s wine enthusiasts.

Mulready’s also remains a cornerstone of the local community. Large front windows give the pub a bright and inviting feel, and the back patio is a favorite spot anytime the weather cooperates. On any given day, you might find live music,

food trucks, trivia nights, yoga classes, book clubs, or tasting events happening here.

“We make it a priority to be involved with local stuff,” Worthing said. “Whether that’s trivia on Wednesday nights or Taco Tuesdays and Fridays, or our pet-friendly policy, we applaud and encourage local, and especially female-owned, things we can incorporate here at the pub.”

While Mulready’s carries an impressive 23 craft beer taps— including two nitro lines—and one of the largest whiskey selections in the region, Worthing ensures wine is always part of the conversation. “We’re all about helping people to discover something new,” Worthing said.

Even the décor at Mulready’s complements this culture of discovery. The walls of the pub are a continually changing art exhibit. From the beginning, local art has been an important part of the vibe. It’s a place where creativity flows as freely as the drinks—wine included.

Whether you’re visiting during the annual Unbound gravel race or stopping by for a quiet evening with friends, Mulready’s invites you to raise a glass to the art of the drink. And if you’re holding a glass of wine, Meg Worthing will make sure it’s one worth savoring.

Mulready’s Pub is located at 717 Commercial Street, in the heart of downtown Emporia. For current happenings, visit mulreadys.com, call 620-208-2337, or find them on Facebook.

RURAL ROOTS

From hats and boots to fences and feed, family owned Bluestem Farm & Ranch has supplied it all for over 63 years

ROOTS

For generations, Bluestem Farm & Ranch Supply has been a cherished cornerstone for Emporia and the surrounding communities since 1961. This iconic store is far more than a shopping destination—it’s a symbol of the hardworking spirit and the rural way of life that defines the region.

From fencing materials and livestock feed to tractor parts and irrigation supplies, the store is an essential resource for those working the land, but its appeal extends far beyond farmers and ranchers. The 60,000 square foot store has the charm of a local general store. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Bluestem for its extensive selection of hunting, fishing, and camping gear. Families appreciate its variety of clothing, home goods, toys, and gifts.

As you step inside, you’ll discover the legendary wall of jeans—8,000 pairs of denim, to be exact. If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, it probably doesn’t exist! Along with jeans, Bluestem features Western clothing, boots, and shoes for men, women, and children.

Bluestem stocks an incredible array of housewares. Looking for a sturdy stand mixer? Check! How about canning jars and lids and all the accessories? You’ll find it all here. From cast iron cookware to ice cream freezers and household gadgets, you’re always prepared for your next project.

Bluestem’s animal care section is second to none. You’ll find quite a selection of animal health products and pet supplies for farriers, show grooming, vaccines, tack, vet supplies, and more. They’ve got Rover covered, too, with collars, leashes, pet food, containment systems, medicines, toys, and treats. And don’t forget the birdhouses, bird

whatever you need for tending the wildlife in your own backyard.

Chick Days are big events at Bluestem. There’s nothing quite so cozy and comforting as crowding around a stock tank filled with cheeping baby chicks, warmed by brooder lights and tripping over one another on a fluffy soft bed of wood shavings. And if you just can’t resist taking one home, Bluestem will send you off with feed, bedding, and maybe your very own chicken tractor!

Bluestem is a haven for gardeners, too. During the gardening season, the store carries a wide selection of vegetables, herbs, bedding plants, perennials, trees, and shrubs. Inside, shelves are lined with fertilizers, grass seed and plant seeds, garden tools, hoses, and more. Lawnmowers are sold and serviced here, too, along with a complete small engine department. Bluestem is an authorized service center for a variety of tools, mowers, and tractors.

No visit to Bluestem is complete without grabbing a bag of their freshly popped, free popcorn—a hallmark of the store. There’s a selection of snacks and soft drinks as well. You’ll find toys, gifts, and books, plus Western jewelry and accessories. That perfect Traeger grill is here, too, just waiting for you to take it home, along with all the grilling tools, rubs, and grill gear anybody could want.

Bluestem Farm & Ranch Supply is located at 2611 W. Highway 50 in Emporia. The store is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The store is closed on Sundays. Reach them by phone at 620-342-5502, visit bluestemfarmandranch.com, or find

From Clay Club to Chalk Fest, it’s an everchanging kaleidoscope of the arts at the Emporia Arts Council. With renovations from top to bottom, your experience will be enhanced whether you’re attending a live performance, learning new skills in an art class, or strolling through an art exhibit.

From the moment you enter the dramatic Trusler Gallery space, with its soaring floorto-ceiling windows overlooking the bustle of downtown, you’re in a whole different world. Sometimes it’s children’s art on display, paying homage to artists of the future and opening our eyes to the whimsical, clear-eyed nature of the child artist. Other times it is the pathos of art created by veterans, revealing stories that might otherwise never be told. EAC offers a full schedule of local and regional exhibits, a delight to explore and expand your appreciation of art in all its many forms.

experience the excitement of auditions and rehearsals and perform a full-scale musical production for the public.

Art spurs creativity and a sense of adventure, EAC believes. Established in 1976, EAC remains steadfastly true to its mission: “To Educate, to Advocate, and to Celebrate the Arts in Emporia and our seven-county service area.” Specialized art classes led by professionals are offered yearround for all ages in state-of-the-art classrooms, including the Lewis Humphreys Clay Studio.

And there’s so much new this year! EAC Executive Director Dawn Young explained that extensive renovations have updated the Davis Theatre to an impeccable theatrical performance venue and state-of-the-art conference and event space. “We are thrilled to welcome visitors to the brand-new Mitchell Family Innovation Lab, too,” Young said. “High tech meets high art here, with accommodations for everything from iPads to digital conferencing and high-speed internet.”

A carefully crafted partnership between the Arts Council and Hetlinger Developmental Services has transformed the Hetlinger Creates Classroom into “a very special space for our friends who are differently abled,” Young continued. “This is truly a labor of love on the part of all those involved in bringing it to fruition.”

The thoughtfully curated Glaser Art Gift Store offers regionally handcrafted items from jewelry and soaps to sculpture and framed art. One-of-a-kind art pieces ensure that your choice will be unique, a treasure you’ll not find anywhere else.

EAC hosts a sumptuous annual array of performing arts, from concerts to comedy, and is home to the long-running Missoula Children’s Theatre every June. The troupe arrives in Emporia with sets, costumes, props, and makeup–everything necessary to put on a show… except for the cast! Local youth

Adult art education provides opportunities for continued growth, exploration, and new skill development. For many adults, especially those engaged in demanding occupations, art provides a much-needed creative outlet. Art allows people to tap into their imagination, experiment with new ideas, and pursue interests outside their normal daily routines.

Youth art education is just as valuable, crucial to fostering creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking skills. Art projects often require problem-solving skills, such as translating an idea into a tangible piece of art or overcoming technical challenges. Collaborative art projects help children develop important social skills of communication, cooperation, and teamwork.

EAC expands its reach into the community with the Emil Babinger Art Mobile, bringing art and cultural activities to schools, senior facilities, community events, and other locations area-wide, offering art activities for budding artists and art lovers of all ages on-site wherever it travels.

Visit the Emporia Arts Council at 815 Commercial St. in downtown Emporia. The facility is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. OUR NATURAL

Voted one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas, the Flint Hills are a special, magical place. The region is one the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in the world, with rolling vistas that have endured largely unchanged for thousands of years.

Traveling over the hills and valleys on a quiet country roadway in the Flint Hills will challenge your idea that Kansas is flat. After the annual pasture burnings in springtime, the hills are renewed, bringing forth sweeping carpets of native grasses and wildflowers. With a population of less than 12.7 people per square mile, your only company may be the hawks, songbirds, deer, and coyotes commonly spotted throughout the region. Evenings in the Flint Hills often put on a show of breathtaking sunsets and brilliant stars, perfect for gazing in quiet stillness. The Flint Hills are truly one of America’s unique places, harboring a wealth of adventure, beauty, and history. The area is best experienced up close by bike, jeep, car, kayak, or on foot. Emporia is the perfect place to begin and end your daily adventures.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

At one time, there were over 150 million acres of tallgrass prairie that stretched from Texas to Canada. Today only 4% remains, with much of it at TALLGRASS PRAIRIE NATIONAL PRESERVE (2480B KS-177, Strong City, KS). Hike the trails spanning nearly 11,000 acres of wide open spaces and beautiful vistas. The preserve includes a bison herd, oneroom schoolhouse, historic limestone buildings, and a visitors center. Bring your camera and capture the 150 species of birds, 35 species of reptiles and amphibians, 35 species of mammals, 400 species of wildflowers, and 70 species of native grasses as you hike.

The FLINT HILLS TRAIL STATE PARK is a 94-mile multi-use trail through the heart of the Flint Hills. It stretches between Osawatomie and Council Grove and is the longest trail in Kansas. Trailheads closest to Emporia include Admire, Allen, and Bushong.

Running from Council Grove to Cassoday, the FLINT HILLS SCENIC BYWAY offers incredible views of the native grasses and flowers of the tallgrass prairie. Much of the land along the Byway looks as it did thousands of years ago when the Kaw, Osage, and other native tribes lived there. If you dig history, photography, or just a

good country cruise, our HISTORIC BRIDGE TOUR OF LYON COUNTY (visitemporia.com/bridges) is a must!

The Flint Hills region also provides excellent FISHING AND BOATING opportunities. Anglers can check out reservoirs such as Council Grove, Melvern, John Redmond, and Pomona or the smaller county fishing lakes in Lyon, Chase, and Osage counties. The most common fish caught in this area are bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill, trout, and walleye. Kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding are a great way to enjoy area lakes. Find permit information and more at ksoutdoors.com.

This area is rooted in cultural diversity and we are proud to share with others the many reasons we love to call this place home. We certainly hope you will be good stewards of our community and environment during your time here with us. Please join us in taking the Visit Emporia pledge to show your commitment to having a wonderful experience in Emporia and the Flint Hills. Scan the code to take the pledge now and get a digital badge.

THE PATH LESS TRAVELED

One of the best ways to enjoy the Flint Hills is by Jeep or SUV. With many prime views located off the highways, a vehicle that can handle rough gravel roads and low-water crossings is the ideal choice to experience the region’s remote, natural beauty.

Curated routes from local enthusiasts

If you’re not a local, it can be difficult to know where to start exploring the vast area of the Flint Hills, but the backroad explorers at Visit Emporia have you covered. We’ve put together a few routes that are specially designed for Jeeps or SUVs. It’s fun for the whole family and the Flint Hills have hundreds of miles of minimum-maintenance roads to explore. The routes we’ve created will take you through some of the Flint Hills’ most picturesque areas and little-known hidden gems. Scan the code for routes and information to know before heading out.

GRAVEL CAPITAL

With thousands of miles of gravel roads winding through the Flint Hills, a close-knit cycling community, and the planet’s most epic bike race, Emporia is the Gravel Cycling Capital of the World.

Emporia sits in the heart of the Flint Hills, with waves of rolling tallgrass prairie stretching to the north, south, and Gravel roads snake out from Emporia into the sparsely populated countryside. These remote unpaved stretches of the Flint Hills provide the perfect backdrop for cyclists wanting to experience something quite literally, “off the beaten path.” Whether you come for our epic events, such as UNBOUND Gravel, to connect with our community of fellow cyclists, or simply to explore in solitude, it’s easy to see why Emporia is the epicenter of the gravel grinding universe.

Famous Finish

UNBOUND GRAVEL (unboundgravel.com) is the world’s most recognizable gravel cycling event. Held the first weekend after Memorial Day, this multi-day event contains rides and races of various distances ranging from 25-miles to 350-miles. Over 10,000 riders, family, friends, and spectators converge in Emporia over the course of the weekend to celebrate. All of downtown Emporia becomes a street party with food, drink, and plenty of cowbell. You don’t have to be a rider to enjoy the energy and electricity of this world-class event.

Gear Up

With three bike shops, there is no lack of support in the gravel cycling capital. ECLECTIC BIKES (823 Commercial St) is a specialty bike shop where you can rent or buy new or vintage bikes. At HIGH GEAR CYCLERY (520 Commercial St) you will find small town service with a big city selection. With a passion for cycling, they will help you find the bike of your dreams. MERCHANT CYCLES (716 Commercial St) is your adventure headquarters. From your first gravel ride to overnight bikepacking adventures, they will help you find the right bike and gear to tackle the Flint Hills.

Group Rides

Locals such as Mulready’s Pub, Merchant Cycles, High Gear, Eclectic Bikes, and Babes on Bikes host weekly group rides to encourage new cyclists, to push each other to the next level, or to just simply have fun with other cyclists. There is sure to be a ride to fit your skill level. Visit a local bike shop to learn more!

Favorite Routes

Visit Emporia has partnered with communities around the state to form GravelKS.com – your source for expertly planned routes at all skill levels. We’ve listed a few of our favorite routes starting in Emporia below. Scan the code for route maps (look for Emporia’s routes in the Southeast section). You can also pick up a Pocket Cycling Guide at the Visit Emporia office, 719 Commercial St.

MURDER ORDAINED

Despite its ominous name, ‘Murder Ordained’ is a very tame, beginner-friendly route. It is nearly pancake flat with only 249 ft. of climbing over the 13.8 miles.

TEAPOT MOUND

This is what you travel to the gravel capital for –open range and wide open vistas! This loop takes riders over minimum maintenance roads (which can be muddy if wet) and into the open cattle grazing range that makes this area so special.

PRAIRIE FIRE

Prairie fires are an integral part of land management in this part of the world. They also make for a splendid light show at night! The burning is what allows for the tall grass that makes this part of the world famous to grow and flourish. Hit this route in the spring to try and catch a glimpse of this natural wonder.

GEARED UP

New opportunities for kids to grow, learn, and go fast!

Courtesy Dan Hughes

Are your kids not into ball sports? Perfect! Get their wheels rolling with like-minded kids and parents who are shifting gears from traditional ball sports to racing mountain bikes. Emporia’s own Coyote Composite is the local branch of the National Intercollegiate Cycling Association (NICA).

Coyote Composite offers mountain biking for sixth through 12th graders, meeting them at every level of cycling with welcoming friendship and team spirit. A mainstay of the program is that “no kid sits on the bench–and everybody cheers everybody.”

Coyote Composite is the only youth mountain biking program in the area. Events are structured around kids and safety but showcase how the higher-level NICA events are conducted. These professional-style events highlight the value of learning skills they can use for any kind of bike riding. Team members work alongside coaches and volunteers with fundraising events like bike washes and bake sales. The idea is for everyone to be invested with a little sweat equity. It’s not unusual to see Coyote Composite riders move up to the 25- or 50-mile annual Unbound Gravel races. In fact, a number of Unbound athletes came from the NICA program.

This is, however, strictly mountain bike racing, not gravel riding a la Unbound. Coyote Composite and NICA races are dirt trail races: not on roads but still not gravel riding. Young riders are taught to ride bikes safely and are trained in how to respond to an emergency situation. The caveat is that the program is fun and that everyone is welcome. Team members do race, but the group is not race-focused. Coaches and team members are competitive, but the group is more about building a community of young cyclists. Many parents are involved with the program at all levels.

The Coyote Composite program strives to offer something for young riders at various levels of difficulty and competition. Riders younger than 11 years old are invited to certain Coyote Composite events for a preview of what youth mountain biking is all about and ride the course at their own pace. At the upper end is the Devo team, much like a premier soccer or baseball team. Devo (short for developmental) riders participate with mountain bikes, cyclocross, enduro racing, and more; it is a traveling team.

Coyote Composite coaches are the heart and soul of the program. Avid cyclists themselves, some have only gotten back on the bike in the last few years, because of the program, and some are parents. They emphasize how mountain biking helps them stay healthy, both mentally and physically. They all enjoy teaching the sport and sharing mountain biking knowledge with young cyclists. They say that sharing their passion for cycling with local youth is a way of giving back and helping build a stronger community for future generations.

Learn more about Coyote Composite at teamcoyotemtb.org and their Facebook and Instagram pages, phone them at 620757-1539, or email coyotecomposite@gmail.com.

Lyon County History Center is a hub of history, education, and community

LIVING HISTORY

Preserving history that makes our community unique. That’s Lyon County History Center in a nutshell. But there’s so much more to explore and experience! Located at 711 Commercial St., the home of all things historical is also host to a broad array of community-oriented happenings.

Carefully curated rotating exhibits, the extensive research room and archives, and the immensely popular Kids Zone are the museum’s foundational offerings. Kids of all ages are drawn to the bright and charming Kids Zone, located on the second floor. New this year are unique toys, expanded shelving to house the many child-friendly items and books, and safety gates that ensure a safe and engaging place for the littlest visitors. The Kids Zone is stocked with games, books, toys, and all the accessories a child could want to engage in fun and educational play.

Exhibits on the first and second floors of the museum tell the story of Lyon County’s past. The museum focuses on seven core themes of immigration, transportation, farming and ranching, business and industry, military and Veterans Day, natural history, and Native Americans. The continuously updated exhibits and engaging programs make history relevant to each new generation of visitors.

There’s a newly expanded public research and conference space on the first floor, adjacent to the Winter Family Museum Store. The small gift shop features whimsical t-shirts, local history books and books by local authors, and unique gift items and souvenirs with a decidedly local flavor. The research library is open by appointment, and can be arranged by calling 620-340-6320 to schedule.

Established by a local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1937, the museum’s first home was

in the basement of the Civic Auditorium. When the Carnegie Library was decommissioned, it became the museum’s home in 1980.

During the 1990s, the archives were housed in a former restaurant. And finally, in 2016 LCHC found its forever home in the historical Montgomery Ward/Winter Furniture building in downtown Emporia. The much larger footprint allows for expanded community interaction and participation utilizing the wide-open third floor meeting space.

Thousands know LCHC as the registration home for huge events like the annual Unbound Gravel bicycle race. A variety of historical presentations, civic events, and community meetings are also held at the History Center. From jigsaw puzzle tournaments to quilt shows, there’s something new happening at this lively museum every week.

As history keepers and storytellers, the Lyon County History Center team is committed to preserving the past while building a vibrant future for our community–a place where history lives on and every visit is an opportunity to explore, learn, and connect.

Visit the Lyon County History Center at 711 Commercial St. in downtown Emporia. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $3.00 per adult and $1.00 per child. Volunteers are an important component of the museum’s operation; new volunteers are welcomed and appreciated.

See the History Center website at explorelyoncounty.org for more information, call them at 620-340-6310, and find them on Facebook for the most up-to-date information about exhibits and events.

UNLOCKING SKILLS & DOORS

Emporia’s new Mi Negocio Academy empowers Spanish-Speaking

Mi Negocio Academy is a comprehensive program designed to assist aspiring entrepreneurs start their own businesses–conducted in Spanish! This collaboration between the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Development Center at Emporia State University offers valuable knowledge and instruction for Spanish-speaking individuals venturing into the world of business.

Mi Negocio graduate Alonso Hernandez owns Las Catrinas Mexican Restaurant in Emporia. Because of the contacts he made and the resources he learned about during the course, Hernandez was able to connect with local government and utilize services to add a patio at his place of business. This addition has boosted business and helped Las Catrinas create a more unique dining experience. Without the knowledge gained from his Mi Negocio coursework, Hernandez noted that the beautiful outdoor space would not have come to fruition. The course is offered annually, January through May, although resources, advice, and credentialing/certification assistance are available year-round. Mi Negocio participants are introduced to entrepreneurship as it works in the U.S. Through brainstorming and discussion, they evaluate the feasibility and market potential of various business ideas, and choose their focus for further development. The classes cover target market identification; market research to identify customer needs, preferences, and demographics; market segmentation and niche opportunities; personal assets, skills, and resources assessment; and developing a unique selling proposition based on their target market.

participants are introduced to a variety of funding options for their own small business concepts.

Another important aspect of Mi Negocio Academy is an overview of marketing principles and strategies, which leads naturally into creating a marketing plan and setting marketing objectives. Participants develop branding strategies and craft their own individual brand stories, while exploring various marketing channels, including digital marketing. They learn to implement effective marketing tactics and measure the success of their marketing campaigns. Finally, the importance of a business plan is highlighted. Class members receive step-by-step guidance in creating their own comprehensive business plan–and present it in class.

If you want to start a business, but aren’t sure how to go about it, Mi Negocio offers mentoring, referrals for attorneys and accountants, and other helpful resources. The objective of Mi Negocio Academy is to provide–in Spanish–the tools and expertise small business owners need to kickstart their entrepreneurial journey with confidence.

Coursework delves into understanding consumer buying behavior; developing effective pricing strategies; competitive analysis; inventory management and supply chain basics; operations management and optimizing business processes; and quality control and customer service systems. Participants are also introduced to small business financial management, including bookkeeping basics, budgeting, and managing cash flow. Of great importance to any small business,

Hernandez said, “I had a very good experience in Mi Negocio with the different people who came in to talk to us. We met very good people and they help a lot for the businesses in Emporia. Thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for making that program available.”

Learn more about Mi Negocio Academy by visiting the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce at 815 Commercial Street, visiting emporiakschamber.org, or by calling 620-342-1600.

STRONG OPTIONS

Emporia’s fitness opportunities make getting and staying in shape fun and easy.

We get it – life can be busy, challenging, and overwhelming. That’s why it’s so important to prioritize your health and wellbeing. In Emporia, you’ll find a wide range of options, both traditional and unconventional, to help you and your family stay active, healthy, and full of life. Pair that with outdoor activities like cycling and disc golf, and it won’t be long before you’re feeling great.

Let's explore the strong options out there for you.

The Emporia Recreation Center provides healthy activities for all generations in a safe, friendly community to help achieve better wellness outcomes. Established in 1953, ERC is the only such entity in the state that is jointly operated by the city and the local school district.

The Rec Center has a pool for lap swimming and fitness classes, and a viewing room where many birthday parties are held. The full-size basketball court is used for pickleball, indoor soccer, volleyball, and more, in addition to youth and adult basketball. Fifteen laps on the walking track above the gym equals one mile. Also upstairs, a fitness studio offers yoga and fitness classes. The only racquetball court in Lyon County is here.
