Sweet Dreams SWEET GR

INDULGE IN EMPORIA

“We want everything we offer to be a little present.” -Kim Redeker, above center with her team

8 Emporia Community Guide

Some pleasures in life are pure and simple. They delight our senses and make an ordinary day feel special. These experiences are often so universal that they become part of our language. After all, who doesn’t love feeling like a kid in a candy store? At The Sweet Granada, located at 803 Commercial Street in downtown Emporia, you can experience this simple pleasure in its perfect form. The Sweet Granada is the candy store you have always dreamed of. When you step through the door, the scent of cocoa and sugar wafts gently toward you from the kitchen in the back of the shop. The shelves and display cases are filled with handmade gourmet chocolate truffles, creams, clusters, caramels and barks.

are made at the

RANADA Depending on the season, you’ll see chocolate-dipped strawberries or chocolate and caramel apples, slabs of fudge waiting to be cut to order or gelatos to cool you off on a hot summer day. On top of the display cases sit jars filled with candies in a rainbow of colors and myriad flavors, reminiscent of a scene from a Norman Rockwell painting. The Sweet Granada is a family business. It was created in 2004 by the mother-daughter team Toni Bowling and Kim Redeker. Redeker calls what they do with chocolate the expression of comfort food in candy form. She describes their offerings as traditional and reminiscent of the candies and chocolates well known in the 1980s and 1990s. Redeker and her staff make over 200 candies, cookies and other confections, all made by hand and in short batches for optimal freshness. Signature items like Caramel Clusters, Granada Goo and Pop-Choc are among their year-round standards. Pop-Choc is salty, buttered popcorn drizzled in white and milk chocolate and is the store’s most popular item, with sales of over 10,000 pounds a year. The Sweet Granada is also an idea factory. Making every visit a unique experience is part of what makes the shop special. Redeker and her staff keep a running list of new ideas and customer requests. They constantly create new offerings and experiment with fresh takes on beloved favorites. “We want everything we offer to be a little present,” said Redeker. “Whether it is $5 of candy or a $50 gift basket, we want you to feel love and attention has gone into it.” That love and attention extend beyond the delicious sweets and the pretty packaging. It is present in every part of the customer experience. “I once had a customer whip open the door and say, ‘It’s like going on vacation in here,’” said Redeker. “That is the feeling we want to provide every day. We want people to experience the feeling of being on vacation just by walking through our door.” Experience the feeling for yourself. The Sweet Granada is open seven days a week or you can order online at sweetgranada.com. You can also follow them on Facebook @sweetgranada and Instagram @thesweetgranada.

Robin Figueroa Pairs Passion and Technique to Make The Daily Station Extraordinary

Now and then, you meet someone with a gift for cooking. How they can turn a handful of ingredients into a delicious meal seems mysterious and wondrous. After all, how can simply applying heat to some meat and vegetables leave them so utterly transformed?

It starts with skill and practice. Robin Figueroa is a perfect example of how training can refine a cook into a master of the art. Before he started The Daily Station with his wife, Lidia, he spent years honing his skills under renowned chefs at Boston’s TD Garden, Harbor Hotel and Bar Boulud at Mandarin Oriental. In these kitchens, he learned the New England and French cooking styles. Later he would expand his repertoire by traveling to Central America, delving into his heritage and perfecting the traditional techniques of Salvadoran cooking alongside his mother. What he creates at The Daily Station is a fusion of Mexican and El Salvadoran food, built on the processes he learned in the French discipline. “If you want to master your culinary path, I think it all starts with French cooking,” said Figueroa. “Because there are no shortcuts. You have to do it right. If you don't, it's not going to come out the way you want it to.” But in addition to his vast technical expertise, Robin has another special ingredient — passion. When you eat at The Daily Station, you are treated to a meal made with love for the process, and you can taste the difference. It’s why the food truck has developed a cult-like following. Robin is uncompromising in his approach from start to finish. For him, it always begins with carefully selecting the freshest ingredients and devoting the optimal time to make them right. He’s not interested in shortcuts. “I let my steak marinate for 24 hours, but I also sear it to lock the flavors in,” said Figueroa. “With other meats, we do a slow braising, which means letting it cook slowly so it will be nice and tender. Our birria takes 12 hours. Our carnitas is six hours. This way, we maximize the flavor. I don’t like to rush it.” The result is delicious items like tacos, pupusas, and empanadas that you can’t help but devour. If you find yourself standing at the window to order, struggling to choose between loaded fries, loaded nachos or any of their other delectable offerings, Robin will kindly ask you questions and give you a sample of pork or beef to help you decide. Deciding will be the only problem you have at The Daily Station. With so many tempting options, it’s hard to make up your mind. But once you have your first sip of made-from-scratch strawberry horchata or hibiscus tea called jamaica and sink your teeth into your pizza birria or taquitos dorados, you will be swept up in the joy of good food made with love. The Daily Station at 312 W. South Avenue is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. You can also follow them on Facebook. 10 Emporia Community Guide

Poehler Destination Explore A World of Antique and Vintage Treasures at Poehler Mercantile Antique Mall

“Everybody has something that connects them to what they collect...” 16 Emporia Community Guide

A

ntique and vintage enthusiasts are always on the lookout for unique pieces that can add character to their homes and collections. But the reasons why they are drawn to these items are as varied as the pieces they collect. For some, it is about owning things no one else has. Others long for furnishings with character, dimension and craftsmanship that isn’t present in today’s mass-produced pieces. And for many more, the lure is collecting pieces with a history and a story. Rocky Slaymaker is as knowledgeable about the reasons people shop for these treasures as he is about the history and value of the items themselves. For 20 years, he’s helped people find the antiques and vintage items they are searching for at Poehler Mercantile Antique Mall at 301 Commercial Street. “Everybody has something that connects them to what they collect,” said Slaymaker. “It's very personal. That makes it fun. I get to have wonderful conversations with people from all over the world and help them find just the thing they are looking for.” Slaymaker developed his love of antiques from his mother, Shirley. As a kid, he trailed behind her at garage and estate sales as she built her personal collection and became a dealer and consigner. He took what she taught him to Los Angeles, where he worked in the movie industry for 16 years as a production assistant, set decorator, swing gang, leadman and assistant director. This work of set creation and world-building was a masterclass in historical periods and the sometimes-minor details that distinguish one period from another.

When Slaymaker returned to Emporia, he brought what he’d learned and many items he’d collected to help his parents, Shirley and Ron Slaymaker, start Poehler Mercantile Antique Mall. Twenty years later, he and his dad are carrying on the vision that his mom Shirley started. The three-and-a-half-story building has a fascinating history of its own. It originally opened in 1907 as Poehler Mercantile, a wholesale grocery business. Before that, the first Lyon County Courthouse stood on the site. Poehler’s 15,000-square-foot showroom is a wonderland to explore. It’s filled with everything; from furniture ranging from the 1800s to modern mid-century pieces, Depression glass, fine china, kitchenwares, garden art, vintage clothing, jewelry, books, memorabilia, and more. The store also has a sports museum containing over 50 years of sports memorabilia like photos, yearbooks and trophies. The museum was created by Coach Ron Slaymaker, head men’s basketball coach at ESU for 27 years and Rocky’s dad. Visiting Poehler is not just about finding beautiful pieces; it’s also about finding things that reflect your unique interests. If you are looking for an addition to your collection or just want something fun and funky for your home, Poehler Mercantile Antique Mall has something special for everyone. Poehler Mercantile Antique Mall at 301 Commercial Street is open 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. SCE

Anyone who loves beautiful things and meeting cool people will appreciate Emporia’s thriving art scene. With murals, galleries, local shops and a monthly art walk, there are numerous ways to experience and support the work of Emporia’s talented art community. EMPORIA FIRST FRIDAY (emporiafirstfriday.com) art walks are the perfect place to experience vibrant local culture, as well as support local artists and businesses and connect with the community. Emporia First Friday, or EFF, is the brainchild of Executive Director Kaila Mock and Events Specialist Joel Smith. The event has been instrumental in fostering local artists and expanding access to art in Emporia. Held on the first Friday of every month, between 10 to 20 downtown businesses host an artist and exhibit their work. From mediums as broad as paintings in watercolors and oils to ceramics and fiber arts, as well as music and poetry, everyone can find something that speaks to their soul. It's also a casual and easy way to spend an evening. Just pick up your free Art Walk Passport from any participating venue. Then stroll down Commercial Street at your own pace and visit as many of the art exhibitions as you like. Chat with artists and browse their works and the participating businesses’ wares. If you want to enter to win the passport prize, collect a stamp from the featured presenting venue plus at least seven participating businesses and turn in your passport at Mulready’s Pub by 8:00 p.m. to be entered in the drawing. Mock is also part of the Community Arts Alliance, an organization dedicated to enhancing public art opportunities. The Alliance has been instrumental in organizing and financing murals throughout the town. Recent additions include a floral mural on the building at 105 E. 12th Avenue, set up as a paint-by-number project for EFF attendees to participate in creating. Other recent additions are the Hispanic Heritage mural and the Faces of Emporia mural, a wheat paste collage of 188 photographs of local Emporians photographed by Dave Leiker. If you want opportunities to purchase art, Emporia has you covered. In addition to buying directly from artists at the art walks, you can visit TROX GALLERY & GIFTS (715 Commercial St) and the EMPORIA ARTS CENTER GIFT SHOP (815 Commercial St). The works of 160 artists are represented between these two stores, and the art walk regularly features new and emerging artists. “There’s all different price points and all kinds of imagery,” said Mock. “Any genre or medium that you’re looking for, you’re going to be able to find it.” The more you explore, the more you will experience what makes art vital to life. “Art can lift one out of just 'survival' mode and into something more uplifting, more hopeful,” said Onalee Nicklin, a local artist and illustrator. “Every group of people the world over throughout time has engaged in some form of art, which makes me believe it is an intrinsic, God-given part of the human race.”

THE FLINT HILLS

OUR NATURAL

WONDER

Voted one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas, the Flint Hills are a special, magical place. The region is one the last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in the world, with rolling vistas that have endured largely unchanged for thousands of years.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

24 Emporia Community Guide

Traveling over the hills and valleys on a quiet country roadway in the Flint Hills will challenge your idea that Kansas is flat. After the annual pasture burnings in springtime, the hills are renewed, bringing forth sweeping carpets of native grasses and wildflowers. With a population of less than 12.7 people per square mile, your only company may be the hawks, songbirds, deer, and coyotes commonly spotted throughout the region. Evenings in the Flint Hills often put on a show of breathtaking sunsets and brilliant stars, perfect for gazing in quiet stillness. The Flint Hills are truly one of America’s unique places, harboring a wealth of adventure, beauty, and history. The area is best experienced up close by bike, jeep, car, kayak, or on foot. Emporia is the perfect place to begin and end your daily adventures.

At one time, there were over 150 million acres of tallgrass prairie that stretched from Texas to Canada. Today only 4% remains, with much of it at TALLGRASS PRAIRIE NATIONAL PRESERVE (2480B KS-177, Strong City, KS). Hike the trails spanning nearly 11,000 acres of wide open spaces and beautiful vistas. The preserve includes a bison herd, one-room schoolhouse, historic limestone buildings, and visitors center. Bring your camera and capture the 150 species of birds, 35 species of reptiles and amphibians, 35 species of mammals, 400 species of wildflowers, and 70 species of native grasses as you hike. The FLINT HILLS TRAIL STATE PARK is a 94-mile multi-use trail through the heart of the Flint Hills. It stretches between Osawatomie and Council Grove and is the longest trail in Kansas. Trail heads closest to Emporia include Admire, Allen, and Bushong.

Running from Council Grove to Cassoday, the FLINT HILLS SCENIC BYWAY offers incredible views of the native grasses and flowers of the tallgrass prairie. Much of the land along the Byway looks as it did thousands of years ago when the Kaw, Osage, and other native tribes lived there. If you dig history, photography, or just a good country cruise, our HISTORIC BRIDGE TOUR OF LYON COUNTY (visitemporia.com/bridges) is a must! The Flint Hills region also provides excellent FISHING AND BOATING opportunities. Anglers can check out reservoirs such as Council Grove, Melvern, John Redmond, and Pomona or the smaller county fishing lakes in Lyon, Chase, and Osage counties. The most common fish caught in this area are bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill, trout and walleye. Kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding are a great way to enjoy area lakes. Find permit information and more at ksoutdoors.com.

Visit Emporia Pledge This area is rooted in cultural diversity and we are proud to share with others the many reasons we love to call this place home. We certainly hope you will be good stewards of our community and environment during your time here with us. Please join us in taking the Visit Emporia pledge to show your commitment to having a wonderful experience in Emporia and the Flint Hills. Scan the code to take the pledge now and get a digital badge. 25

JEEPING JEEPING

One of the best ways to enjoy the Flint Hills is by Jeep or SUV. With many prime views located off the highways, a vehicle that can handle rough gravel roads and low-water crossings is the ideal choice to experience the region’s remote, natural beauty.

Curated routes from local enthusiasts If you’re not a local, it can be difficult to know where to start exploring the vast area of the Flint Hills, but the jeep enthusiasts at Visit Emporia have you covered. We’ve put together a few routes that are specially designed for Jeeps or SUVs. It’s fun for the whole family and the Flint Hills have hundreds of miles of minimum maintenance roads to explore. The routes we’ve created will take you through some of the Flint Hills’ most picturesque areas and little-known hidden gems. Scan the code for routes and information to know before heading out.

CYCLING

GRAVEL

CAPITAL With thousands of miles of gravel roads winding through the Flint Hills, a closeknit cycling community, and the planet’s most epic bike race, Emporia is the Gravel Cycling Capital of the World.

28 Emporia Community Guide

Unbound Gravel

Emporia sits in the heart of the Flint Hills, with waves of rolling tallgrass prairie stretching to the north, south, and west. Gravel roads snake out from Emporia into the sparsely populated countryside. These remote unpaved stretches of the Flint Hills provide the perfect backdrop for cyclists wanting to experience something quite literally, “off the beaten path.” Whether you come for our epic events, such as UNBOUND Gravel, to connect with our community of fellow cyclists, or simply to explore in solitude, it’s easy to see why Emporia is the epicenter of the gravel grinding universe.

Famous Finish UNBOUND GRAVEL (unboundgravel.com) is the world’s most recognizable gravel cycling event. Held the first weekend after Memorial Day, this multi-day event contains rides and races of various distances ranging from 25-miles to 350-miles. Over 10,000 riders, family, friends, and spectators converge in Emporia over the course of the weekend to celebrate. All of downtown Emporia becomes a street party with food, drink, and plenty of cowbell. You don’t have to be a rider to enjoy the energy and electricity of this world class event.

Gear Up With three bike shops, there is no lack of support in the gravel cycling capital. ECLECTIC BIKES (823 Commercial St) is a specialty bike shop where you can rent or buy new or vintage bikes. At HIGH GEAR CYCLERY (520 Commercial St) you will find small town service with a big city selection. With a passion for cycling, they will help you find the bike of your dreams. MERCHANT CYCLES (716 Commercial St) is your adventure headquarters. From your first gravel ride to overnight bikepacking adventures, they will help you find the right bike and gear to tackle the Flint Hills.

Group Rides Locals such as Mulready’s Pub, Merchant Cycles, High Gear, Eclectic Bikes, and Babes on Bikes host weekly group rides to encourage new cyclists, to push each other to the next level, or to just simply have fun with other cyclists. There is sure to be a ride to fit your skill level. Visit gravelcityadventure.com to find a group ride.

THE STATE THAT MADE GRAVEL FAMOUS Visit Emporia has partnered with communities around the state to form GravelKS.com – your source for expertly planned routes at all skill levels. We’ve listed a few of our favorite routes starting in Emporia below. Scan the code for route maps (look for Emporia’s routes in the Southeast section). You can also pick up a Pocket Cycling Guide at the Visit Emporia office, 719 Commercial St.

MURDER ORDAINED

Despite its ominous name, ‘Murder Ordained’ is a very tame, beginnerfriendly route. It is nearly pancake flat with only 249 ft. of climbing over the 13.8 miles.

TEAPOT MOUND

This is what you travel to the gravel capital for – open range and wide open vistas! This loop takes riders over minimum maintenance roads (which can be muddy if wet) and into the open cattle grazing range that makes this area so special.

PRAIRIE FIRE

Prairie fires are an integral part of land management in this part of the world. They also make for a splendid light show at night! The burning is what allows for the tall grass that makes this part of the world famous to grow and flourish. Hit this route in the spring to try and catch a glimpse of this natural wonder.

DISC GOLF

THE EMPORIA

Advantage helping us raise money to reach our season goals to showing up and supporting us at tournaments, Emporia sets the example for how we should all treat one another. On top of the community, Dynamic Discs has been nothing short of unbelievable. They have shown the importance they put on growing the sport and supporting their community.” Teammate Rebekah Thompson shares Farrell’s sentiment. “We are fortunate to have the support of ESU, making us a part of the Athletic Department and providing scholarships to our athletes, which

Emporia State University’s Disc Golf Team Has What Other Teams Don’t When Emporia State University Athletics launched its competitive disc golf team in the fall of 2022, expectations were high. After all, the slogan “Emporia knows disc golf” exists for a reason. Emporia has numerous professional disc golf courses, hosts championship events and is home to Dynamic Discs, a top disc golf retailer.

very few schools currently do for disc golf,” said Thompson. “And they don't just support us financially, but physically as well, like when our Athletic Director flew out to watch us compete at Nationals in South Carolina. I am so grateful that I can compete for Emporia State because the facilities, resources, and support are second to none.”

The team also had a seasoned pro, PDGA World Champion Eric McCabe, to coach them. It seemed logical that these factors would help form a strong team. But what the ESU team achieved in its first year of competition surpassed expectations. They made it to the Collegiate Disc Golf National Championship, with the men’s D-I team being edged out of the lead on the final hole and finishing second.

Thompson is a unique example of how having the backing and encouragement of a team and a community can turn someone with great potential into a serious contender. She had no disc golf experience when she tried out for the team. Six months later, she took 16th at Nationals.

McCabe thinks his team hasn’t even come close to reaching the ceiling of their abilities, both as individuals and as a team. “This team thrives in competition play,” said McCabe. “They feed off each other and encourage one another, unlike anyone I’ve ever seen. It’s like they’ve been playing together for years.” Having McCabe as a coach and mentor has been crucial to the team’s success. But having the resources and encouragement of the community of Emporia has also played a key role. “I am so incredibly impressed with all Emporia has done for our team and disc golf as a sport,” said Justin Farrell. “From 32 Emporia Community Guide

“Great support builds greatness,” said Farrell. “Without the foundation that this community has built, we would not be able to represent our university and town.” The team has returned with fire in their bellies this season, ready to build on their Emporia advantage and turn it into a national championship. “Fans should expect some very exciting and aggressive disc golf,” said Cade Kohlmeier. “We are even more of a threat this year,” said McCabe.

Today, Emporia is known for its multi-day ALL VETERANS TRIBUTE CELEBRATION annually in November. Festivities include a Veterans Day Parade, Freedom Fest, Veteran Artists Exhibition, Quilts of Gratitude, and a Memorial Service to honor all veterans. Also during the month of November, take a walk downtown to see the annual VETERANS BANNER DISPLAY, a project led by the Emporia Main Street organization. NATURE

44 Emporia Community Guide

Leonardo da Vinci may have said it best when he wrote, “Nature is the source of all true knowledge.” If he were around today, he would probably be a fan of Emporia State University’s Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center.

Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center (PAROC) is dedicated to making knowledge about nature available and enjoyable for everyone. Located on the northern edge of the ESU campus, the center offers programs and events that are free and open to the public. Children’s programs feature hands-on learning opportunities ranging from summer camps to monthly Science Storytime. “One Science Storytime was about pollinators,” said Daphne Mays, ESU director of Outreach. “We read a story about bees, then the children crafted flowers while we talked about pollination and what pollinators do for flowers. After that, we went outside to our pollinator garden, and they got to observe pollinators doing the things they had just learned about.” Curious souls of all ages can catch talks about topics as vast as sharks, severe weather and tardigrades – microscopic animals known by the adorable nicknames of water bears and moss piglets. Other programs include authors, musicians, and artists sharing how art can incorporate and draw inspiration from nature. For those eager to learn more about the local environment, PAROC hosts events and activities related to local plants and animals, soil ecology, invasive species, and native restoration. They even hold a native plant sale each year. Visitors are welcome to drop in on weekdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The center has hands-on educational displays that are fun and engaging for kids of all ages. There are live animal displays featuring native fish, lizards and turtles, to name a few. And just try to resist playing with the interactive sandbox. An augmented reality projection turns the sand you shape into mountains, hills and valleys and shows how water and weather move across the natural landscape. But what if you want to get out into nature? Visitors can get their steps in on the Dale Greiner Nature Trail that begins at PAROC and winds through a reconstructed prairie and on into Campus Woods. Or you can enjoy the water. PAROC is situated on King Lake, which is stocked with trout and channel catfish. All you need is your fishing poles and your fishing license. The lake is also open to non-motorized boats, so it’s perfect for kayaking or canoeing. Check out their website to see the rules before you go. PAROC is not just an aquatic research laboratory for students of ESU; it has something fun for everyone. Whether you are a student, a researcher, an outdoor enthusiast or just someone curious about the world around you, PAROC is a natural resource. Check out the events calendar, reserve the space for an event, take a virtual tour and see a live stream of Ruby, the red-eared slider turtle, at esuparoc.com and on Facebook @esuparoc. BUSINESS eed of Light

p S e h t t a

The choice between living in a small town and a big city is often a question of trade-offs. Many city dwellers sacrifice lower living costs, wide open spaces and peaceful surroundings in exchange for business or employment opportunities. But with the working world increasingly shifting online, that equation is changing. For many, if the right technology and resources are available, they can do their job or run their business from anywhere.

Emporia has had a technological advantage over most cities since 2012. That was the year 1 Gbps (gigabit per second) fiber internet began rolling out to local businesses. It was one year after Kansas City got 1 Gbps access. It was two years ahead of Las Vegas, Nevada, and three years ahead of Austin, Texas. How was Emporia launching high-speed, high-bandwidth fiber internet in a community this size ahead of most major metropolitan cities? What did Emporia have that so many other places didn’t? Emporia had ValuNet FIBER. More specifically, Emporia had the partnership of visionary and innovative local entrepreneurs Rick Tidwell, Stormy Supiran, Steve Sauder, and Bobbie Agler, the founders of ValuNet FIBER. The four were partners in the 1980s and 90s in long-distance telecom provider, Valu-Line. Over time, they sold the business and went on to separate projects. In 2011, they came back together to create something new.

Launching something of this scale required investor support. Almost all the investment capital came from Emporia community members. Just as the community demonstrated its commitment to the company, the company has been adamant about serving the community. ValuNet FIBER has excelled because it can offer what the big-name providers can’t — tailored service from a customer care team, technicians and staff who are part of the community they serve. “We truly care about creating solutions,” said Watts. “We create business solutions. We don’t just offer products A, B, or C. We will tailor our services to what the business needs. If an industry wants to come to Emporia, we will build for them. I think that’s what sets us apart from the T-Mobiles and AT&Ts of the world; our local presence and our willingness to be solution-oriented, not cookie-cutter.” ValuNet Fiber was built on the principle of being a leader in the field. To this day, it delivers the highest broadband speed, bandwidth, reliability and quality found anywhere in the United States. Emporia is at the center of everything. It's not just because we have easy access to the interstate and railroads—it's because we have the best technology to connect to anywhere in the world right here.

“Fiber technology had started to become a buzzword,” said Jelinda Watts, Director of Customer Care for ValuNet FIBER. “Everybody knew of Google Fiber. Rick thought, why can't we do that in Emporia, Kansas? We need to be able to offer that here. We need to figure out ways to bring in more industry. We need to figure out how we can better serve the residential population, the schools, the city and the county.”

HEALTH HEALTH

A Different Model for

50 Emporia Community Guide

Health Care

In late 2022, Dr. Aaron Watters opened Liberty MD with his wife and practice manager, Wendy Watters. Liberty MD is a different kind of doctor’s office. It is unique because it uses an alternative payment model called Direct Primary Care (DPC). DPCs provide accessible and personalized primary care services directly to patients. They don’t accept insurance. Instead, patients pay a monthly membership fee.

its wholesale pricing for lab testing and basic medications. Plus, you don’t have to contend with the headache of wondering what insurance will cover. The clinic also offers additional services to improve health and quality of life, like regenerative medicine treatments for non-surgical injuries, nutritional therapies, bioidentical hormone replacement and more.

“I want people to feel good and

live their lives and be happier.”

At Liberty MD, membership offers patients unlimited access to Dr. Watters. You can expect same-day or next-day appointments and see the doctor as frequently as necessary. If you have an urgent issue, you can reach the doctor after hours or on weekends and holidays.

Dr. Watters’ is proud that his practice offers patients an alternative to traditional healthcare models. He loves the time he can spend with his patients and feels blessed that he can help them with their health.

What drew Dr. Watters to this model is the freedom it offers him and his patients. By taking insurance out of the equation, he’s not limited by their reimbursement restrictions. As a result, he often sees his patients more frequently and can spend more time with them at each appointment. As a result, he finds patients seem less rushed and feel greater freedom to discuss all their concerns. Sometimes that is key to uncovering issues.

“My MO is to get people better, naturally and holistically,” said Dr. Watters. “I want people to feel good and live their lives and be happier.”

“A DPC doctor I know found cancer in a patient, and he asked her, ‘Why didn’t you tell someone about this symptom before?’” said Dr. Watters. “She said, ‘It just never reached my top 10 list. It was on my C list.’ She didn’t know it was cancer. It wasn’t causing her significant pain, so she didn’t mention it. I want your C list. I want your A, B, C, X, Y and Z list.” Liberty MD doesn’t just make more time in each appointment with the doctor; patients also receive clarity about the cost of their care. Membership entails unlimited appointments, an annual physical, diagnostics and procedures like EKG, body fat analysis, breathing treatments, lesion removal, minor fractures and more. Patients know upfront what their healthcare costs are. Any services outside the membership have transparent pricing, and Liberty MD passes on

As a DPC, Liberty MD is designed to address a patient’s primary care needs. They recommend that patients continue to carry a major medical plan should they require hospitalization or referral to a specialist. Liberty MD is located at 708 Commercial St. To learn more, visit libertymdemporia.com or check them out on Facebook @ LibertyMDDirectPrimaryCare and on Instagram @ Libertymdemporia.
