BEST DAMN MAIN STREET IN THE USA
visitemporia.com
There are so many great places to visit in downtown Emporia. I hit up the two major coffee spots, Gravel City Roasters and the Granada Coffee Shop, at least once a week. Both have excellent customer service, delicious coffee, and a nice atmosphere.
8
For a unique shopping experience, I like to go to Twin Rivers Winery. Every year I stop by and stock up on Christmas gifts for my friends and family. As for food, some of the best options are located downtown. Radius Brewing Co. produces some of the best beer that I have ever had, and their menu is not only full of delicious, high quality food, but the price is amazing. Casa Ramos is the place to go for a fun, Mexican dinner.
DISCOVER EMPORIA’S HEART AND SOUL
On Friday nights, its a good idea to go to Mulready's Pub for a pint and some grub from the Surly Mermaid Food Truck. On the weekends, hit up the Farmer's Market for some fresh eggs, produce, baked goods, and conversation. 1

Live music
Emporia’s first brewery since prohibition, Radius Brewing Co. serves up brick oven pizzas and a fantastic rotating chef ’s menu. Recently voted the best brewery in Kansas, you can see the award-winning craft beer being brewed in the middle of the dining room.
Nestled in the heart of downtown, stop by Twin Rivers Winery and Gourmet Shoppe for a taste of handcrafted wines produced on-site or buy gourmet goods like fine cheeses and olive oils.
The streets are alive with the sounds of music. Hear local artists at Live in the Lot, an outdoor music series every Wednesday evening in June. Rock out to groups like the Charlie Daniels Band, Kansas, or the Reverend Horton Heat at the historic Granada Theatre, or dance the night away at a venue like the Brickyard 20 Alehouse or the Bourbon Cowboy.

RIDE THIS WAY
Emporia is the epicenter of the gravel grinding world. Every year, thousands of cyclists endure the blistering sun, steep hills and rough trails just to have the bragging rights of saying they finished the Dirty Kanza. This 200-mile endurance race though the Flint Hills is one of the premiere cycling races in the world.
Dirty Kanza The Race June 3, 2017
The first weekend after Memorial Day, 1,900 cyclists from across the world descend on Emporia for the Dirty Kanza. This grueling 200-mile bike race through the beautiful and rugged Flint Hills was named one of the top endurance races in the world by Velo Magazine. Only the toughest will finish. Riders can also opt for the DK 100 Half Pint or the DK 50 race. Experience the excitement at the starting line, cheer riders on at the check-points and join the celebration at the finish line street party in front of the historic Granada Theatre that goes late into the night.

Murder ordained
Kahola Krusher
BEGINNER | 13.8 miles
INTERMEDIATE |53.4 miles
Despite its ominous name, ‘Murder Ordained’ is a very tame, beginnerfriendly route. It is nearly pancake flat with only 249 ft. of climbing over the 13.8 miles.
County Seat Run BEGINNER | 26.9 miles
This route takes riders to the town of Americus. Because the route from Emporia to Americus and back stays close to the Neosho river, riders won’t encounter a lot of climbing, making this a great exploratory ride for gravel enthusiasts of all abilities.
Vitamin G INTERMEDIATE | 32.1 miles
Get a dose of ‘Vitamin Gravel’ on this route that introduces riders to the Flint Hills. This route does encounter Minimum Maintenance Roads (MMR), which are typically dirt. This route may not be suitable if conditions are wet, as these roads can turn to mud.
Many Dirty Kanza veterans know Kahola Lake quite well, as it is featured in the final leg of most editions of the famed gravel race. This scenic route will give riders the same taste of those hills without the epic distance.
The Grind ADVANCED |139.5 miles
This route is not to be taken lightly by even the most accomplished gravel riders. Riders have 100 miles of the best that the Flint Hills have to offer before finding a town to refuel in. Riders will be completely on their own with little to no civilization in sight, for the first 100 miles before arriving in Madison. Not for the faint of heart!

Lunar Kanza This 50-mile gravel leisure ride takes place under the full moon and finishes with a late night block party.

Emporia locals are spoiled with the number of quality courses we have in town. That being said, I would have to say that my favorite course to play in Emporia would be Peter Pan Park. Both the Jones Park courses are fantastic, but Peter Pan forces me to be more creative in how I throw each hole.

Don’t get me wrong, the mildly wooded areas keep rounds from being easy. Routes you’re used to throwing can be altered by a stray tree branch that you didn’t see there yesterday. Even with a great drive, those trees can turn a birdie putt into a bogey in a matter of seconds. It’s just a good all-around course that disc golfers who only rely on long drives can struggle with evening out the playing field a bit. 13

My routes can change on a round-to-round basis depending on weather factors. Kansas winds are ALWAYS a problem, and with Pan being more laden with trees you get some relief from that adversity when the gusts are simply unmanageable anywhere else.

What’s the best way to know a town? Talk to a local. Phillip Miller shares his favorite things to do in Emporia with his family. My favorite thing to do in Emporia with my family is to venture out to the Soden's Grove area and partake in any ongoing family-friendly activities.

The David Traylor Zoo is located within the Grove, and is always great. My children can run around in circles all day exploring the different variety of animals the zoo has to offer, or hang out in the play area and socialize with other children their age. The Soden's Grove area is also home to the Sertoma Miniature Train, which laps around the entire grove under the shade of the trees. My daughter can't get enough of the train rides, and the staff is always very friendly and energetic.

Described as “the loveliest site in the world for a town,” Emporia was founded by five men from Lawrence in 1857, when Kansas was still a territory battling over slavery. The town charter prohibited gambling and the sale of liquor, making Emporia the first prohibition town in the world — 61 years before National Prohibition. Touting a squeaky clean image and free-state values, Emporia sprang up quickly.
The new Lyon County History Center is more than a museum, it is a place to discover and share your history. With a Kid's Zone and a model train, this center is fun for all ages. You will experience history and connect with stories in new and memorable ways through guest speakers and traveling exhibits. Come be inspired in this community center. Insightful conversations start here.

Veterans Emporia is the official founding city of Veterans Day. Emporia celebrated the first Veterans Day in 1953, a year before congress made it a National Holiday in 1954. The idea came from Emporian Alvin J. King, who suggested the renaming of Armistice Day. Emporia Congressman Ed Rees and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, also of Kansas, took the final steps to create this reverent holiday.

Tallgrass prairie once covered 170 million acres of North America. Within a generation, the vast majority was developed and plowed under. Today less than 4% remains, mostly here in the Kansas Flint Hills. The preserve protects a nationally significant remnant of the once vast tallgrass prairie and its cultural resources. Here the tallgrass prairie takes its last stand. The preserve offers many opportunities to make a meaningful connection to the prairie and the people who lived here. See nearly 11,000 acres of wide open spaces, beautiful vistas, seasonal wildflowers, bison and native wildlife and plenty of solitude.
Running from Council Grove to Cassoday, this Byway offers incredible views of the native grasses and flowers of the tallgrass prairie – one of the last remaining such landscapes left in America. Much of the land along the Byway looks as it did thousands of years ago when the Kaw, Osage and other native tribes lived there.
This wildlife refuge lies in the broad, flat Neosho River Valley, a native tallgrass prairie region with natural scenic beauty. 18,463 acres of habitats are managed to provide food and habitat for migratory birds and resident wildlife. Hartford • fws.gov/refuges
The Flint Hills Nature Trail is the seventh longest rail-trail in America, and the longest trail in Kansas. Great for cycling, hiking or horseback riding, trail heads are in Admire, Allen, Bushong, Council Grove and Miller.
