D
a’Vinchi is on his way to becoming a household name. The extraordinary Haitian-American actor has taken Hollywood by storm with his magnetic charm and undeniable talent. In just five years of acting, Da’Vinchi has proven himself to not only be a force for good but a phenomenal actor. He is best known for his role as Terry Flenory in the hit TV show “BMF” on Starz. The actor is also known for his roles in Mary J. Blige’s Real Love, All American, and Grown-ish. Da’Vinchi’s journey to success started on the streets of NYC, where he honed his artistic skills as a spoken word artist and rapper. His natural flair for performance led him to explore acting, and he soon discovered his passion for the craft. Under the guidance of his mentor, Marc John Jeffries, Da’Vinchi polished his acting skills and opened doors to exciting opportunities in the entertainment industry. Below is our conversation. Jada Alexis: You first started out as a spoken word artist and a rapper. What inspired you to tap into that? Da’Vinchi: I’ve just always had a love for music. Everyone around me was doing music. I grew up playing instruments. I was always infatuated with lyrics and the sounds of music, so I was like, yo, I could really do this. So, I just started doing it. Jada Alexis: So, even with spoken word, was it the same feeling for that too? Da’Vinchi: Yeah, it’s just poetry. When people call it spoken word, it sounds like something completely different from music. It’s just music. Music just has a beat behind it. Jada Alexis: So, you did that while you were in college? Da’Vinchi: Yes, I’ve been writing since I was about 12, so I’ve always been writing. Jada Alexis: What about your first role? Did you get that after you graduated? Da’Vinchi: Yeah, so I got a two-year degree in criminal justice, and I moved back up north with my mom, and then I started husting and making music, taking it more seriously, and then I started training for acting. About three years after graduating is when I broke my first role, which was in Marvel’s Jessica Jones.

Jada Alexis: What did you want to do when you chose your major? Da’Vinchi: I wanted to understand the law. I got arrested when I was 13, and black people we’re always getting into different weird encounters with the law when we just don’t know it. So, I was like, if I know this game, then I know what to say when I’m in certain situations. So, I was going to join the Air Force, come out probably start becoming a detective or something like that. Something in criminology, for sure. Jada Alexis: What made you start focusing on acting over music? Da’Vinchi: It’s just clean. Music is a dirty game. It’s a lot of stuff that goes on behind music, and I think if the devil is in control of the entertainment business, it’s for sure music. It’s a real thing. I would say that for sure. Jada Alexis: So, you wouldn’t do music at all? Da’Vinchi: I would, but now it’s like for fun. That’s how I was originally doing it. It’s just when the business aspect started getting involved, then it’s like, ugh, but I’ll still do it for fun, but for right now, I’m off it. I still write, but as far as going to the studio, recording, and putting it out, I’m jaded from that process. Jada Alexis: So, you’re here now filming season 3 of BMF. How is filming going? Da’Vinchi: It’s going good. It’s smooth. I feel like everyone is in a rhythm now after filming season 1 and season 2, so now it’s just like clockwork. We’re just getting our stuff done. Jada Alexis: What can people expect from the new season? Da’Vinchi: It’s going to be different cause Meech and Terry are split

2023 ENTERTAINMENT EDITION up a little bit. Their love situation and Terry’s love triangle is getting worse. Meech is getting into his love situation, and this is the first time they’re really becoming BMF. So, it’s like Atlanta is a huge part of Season 3 because that’s where Meech and T got a lot of respect in this city, so it’s going to be very different from Seasons 1 and 2 because it was all Detroit. Now, it’s like, we’re in the A. Jada Alexis: Did the real Terry Flenory ever give you any advice or have any comments regarding your performance? Da’Vinchi: Yeah, he was very pleased by how I portrayed him, and he loved it. His words, I mean, he had no notes. To me, that was a hell of a compliment. That was like receiving an Emmy. You know to hear it from the man that you’re playing is like, “Yo, you’re killing that.” That’s an award in itself.
Da’Vinchi: Yes, for sure. A lot. A lot of the shootout scenes and other stuff. I don’t want nothing pointed at me. Whenever we have gun scenes, I make sure I check for bullets a lot. If we have a crazy shootout during the season, I’m like, forget all this art stuff right now. We have to make sure we feel safe and stuff like that. So, we have conversations like that. There are definitely a lot of trigger points filming the show. Jada Alexis: What are some of the things you do to keep yourself grounded? Da’Vinchi: I just keep my head tucked, mind my business, meditate, read a lot, and I’m with nature. I love studying, watching, and learning about nature. Just sitting in it and to me, that’s like so humbling because you realize how small you are when you see how powerful nature is. Like you really don’t matter at the end of the day, and that’s humbling.
Jada Alexis: Did you get any advice or feedback from Big Meech? Da’Vinchi: Yeah, I’ve talked to Big Meech, but it’s kind of tough to talk to him for a long time because he’s incarcerated. He definitely let us know how things were back then as far as the wardrobe, the lingo, and what they wanted out of the drug game. Hearing it from him is like, wow. It’s very helpful, and certain stories that I’m not going to say right now.
Jada Alexis: What do you do outside of acting? Da’Vinchi: I work out, writing a lot of jokes because I started hosting comedy shows and doing stand-up. So, it’s been a really interesting world for me to tap into, and it’s been fun, you know. Just trying new things, and sometimes people don’t laugh at something, and some people laugh at this and just seeing what makes brains go crazy, it’s like it’s kind of dope. So, I’ve been doing a lot of that. I’m working on a bunch of stuff completely outside of acting. So, that keeps me busy.
Jada Alexis: How did you prep? Da’Vinchi: I just looked for as much information that I could possibly find off Google, and it’s also good that I have Lil Meech, so he’s like a personal Google because he knows stuff that Google doesn’t. I also talked to the family, and even with that, just creating the character and going to work.
Jada Alexis: You talked a lot about your mental health in other interviews and what you went through growing up, so do you ever get triggered? Does anything happening on set ever remind you of what you’ve previously gone through?
Jada Alexis: Did you feel any pressure when you first started playing Terry Flenory? Da’Vinchi: Yes, I think playing a real person is tough because this person is still alive. He’s relatively young. He’s only like 50 or 51. So, he’s definitely able to see, hear, and watch the whole project.
Jada Alexis: How do you prep for stand-up?
Da’Vinchi: It’s definitely a process. I have a whole notebook. I study with some great comedians, such as Chris Spencer. He mentors me and drops a lot of jewels. Then you also have Rickey Smiley. I was just with him last week, and he was mentoring me and dropping jewels on certain things. I’m studying things and reading
12
EMPOWER ATLANTA certain books on it. If you’re doing it well, you get up there, and it looks like you’re winging it, but in reality, you’re really not. Jada Alexis: You’ve been around some big stars like Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Monique, Ben Affleck, etc. What’s something you have learned by being around so many successful people? Da’Vinchi: It’s a lot. All the people who are like great or just doing well are disciplined. I think that’s one of my biggest takeaways. The people that are at the top, that’s doing very well, they’re very disciplined. They don’t BS. A lot of people, they come here, and they’re gone tomorrow. It’s like they don’t take it seriously, but the people with longevity are disciplined as hell.
Da’Vinchi’s journey is a testament to his talent, perseverance, and dedication to the craft. Moreover, his commitment to using his platform for philanthropic endeavors showcases a heartwarming desire to empower the youth and create a brighter future for the next generation. As Da’Vinchi continues to shine brightly, his impact both on and off the screen is bound to leave a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry and beyond.

ARE YOUR GOALS A MUST-HAVE OR NICE-TO-HAVE BY DAVAUL CARTER
Like everyone, you may have a lot of financial goals. But are they all of equal importance? Probably not. And do they share a similar timeline? Again, it’s unlikely. So, your first step may be to prioritize your goals — and then follow a process that can help you achieve them. THIS PROCESS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING STEPS: • Identify your goals as “must-have” or “nice-to-have.” Making sure you can retire comfortably and won’t outlive your resources is a “must-have” goal. For this goal, you can’t compromise — you need to be certain of achieving it, or at least as certain as possible. But if you want to someday own a vacation home by the beach, and you can’t ever quite afford it, you might find an acceptable substitute, such as renting. So, it seems fair to say that achieving this goal would be “nice-to-have.” • Prioritize your investment dollars. Unless you have unlimited sums to invest — and very few of us have that luxury — you’ll probably need to prioritize where your investment dollars are going. For your main “must-have” goal — retirement — you’ll be helped by the ability to automatically invest through your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you’re on track toward this goal, and you budget carefully and potentially receive salary increases over the years, you may also find space to keep contributing toward the “nice-to-have” goals. • Put “price tags” on your goals. You need to know what your goals will cost. Of course, you may need to estimate the costs for some goals based on different factors. For example, when you think about your goal of retiring comfortably without outliving your money, you’ll need to consider some key questions, including these: When do you want to retire? What sort of retirement lifestyle do you envision? Do you see yourself downsizing your living arrangements? For other goals, though, such as purchasing a vacation home, you could get more specific on how much money you’ll need. • Follow an appropriate strategy. The nature of your goals, and their estimated cost, along with your appetite for risk, should drive your investment strategy — but another key factor is time. So, for a long-term goal like retirement, you’ll likely need
a reasonable amount of quality growth-oriented investments in your portfolio. While these investments — such as stocks and stock-based mutual funds — will fluctuate in value over shorter periods of time, your hope is that, over several decades, they will ultimately provide the growth you need to meet your retirement goal. However, to achieve a goal you want to meet in a year or so — perhaps you’re paying for a wedding or planning a long vacation — you may want to consider more stable investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), short-term bonds or even cash or cash equivalents. They may not provide much in the way of growth, but you can essentially count on them to provide the amount you need when you need it. You’ll need to regularly review the performance of your investment strategy for each goal to assess your progress. Achieving any goals — whether they’re “must-have” or “nice-to-have” — can be challenging. But by identifying and prioritizing these goals, following an appropriate strategy to meet them, and consistently reviewing your approach, you can help yourself get to where you want to go. The USPS Honored Representative John Lewis With The Forever Stamp
T
he U.S. Postal Service recently celebrated the life and legacy of Rep. John Lewis (1940-2020), an American hero and key figure in some of the most pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement, by issuing a Forever stamp with his portrait. A dedication ceremony for the stamp was held today at Morehouse College. “Look carefully at how the shadow falls on the right side of his face, illuminating the left side in a way that seems to take the viewer from darkness into the light. A fitting tribute to a man who sought to awaken the conscience of a country,” said Ronald A. Stroman, a member of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors and dedicated official for the stamp. “The Postal Service is proud to celebrate Lewis — a national treasure — and to honor his legacy with the tribute of this Forever stamp that is as beautiful visually as was the spirit of the man whose image it bears.” Joining Stroman for the ceremony was mistress of ceremonies Alfre Woodard, activist; Lawrence Edward Carter Sr., professor and founding dean, Martin Luther King, Jr., International Chapel at Morehouse College; John-Miles Lewis, son of John Lewis; Henry M. Goodgame Jr., vice president of external relations and alumni engagement, Morehouse College; Linda Earley Chastang, president and chief executive officer of the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation; Michael Collins, chair of the board for the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation; U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock; Peggy Wallace Kennedy, civil rights activist, and author; and Bill Campbell, and Shirley Franklin, former mayors of Atlanta. Ebenezer Baptist Church Choir; dancer Logan Byrd; and vocalists Dottie Peoples, Bettie Mae Fikes, and Victory Brinker. The stamp features a photograph of Lewis taken by Marco Grob for the Aug. 26, 2013, issue of Time Magazine. Lewis’s name is at the bottom of the stamp. The words “USA” and “Forever” appear in the stamp’s top left corner. Derry Noyes, an art director for USPS, designed the stamp. The John Lewis Forever stamp is available in panes of 15. Forever stamps will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail
1-ounce price. Followers of the Postal Service’s YouTube page can view the previously recorded ceremony at John Lewis Commemorative Forever® Stamp Dedication Ceremony – www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJC3fdmJ3oM BACKGROUND ON JOHN LEWIS A key figure in some of the most pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement, John Lewis was the face of the Nashville Student Movement, chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, an original Freedom Rider, and one of the keynote speakers at the historic 1963 March on Washington. Even in the face of hatred and violence, Lewis remained resolute in his commitment to what he liked to call “good trouble.” Devoted to equality and justice for all Americans, Lewis spent more than 30 years in the U.S. House of Representatives steadfastly defending and building on key civil rights gains he helped achieve in the 1960s. He was a staunch and unwavering believer in and advocate for nonviolent protests. The recipient of more than 50 honorary degrees, Time magazine called him a “saint” and “the conscience of the Congress” by his colleagues. Elected to represent Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986, Lewis garnered the support needed to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1991, sponsored the legislation that created the 54-mile Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail and worked for more than a decade to establish the National Museum of African American History and Culture on the National Mall in Washington, DC. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.

Cannes Lions Honors Academy Award® Winning Filmmaker Spike Lee with the Festival’s first Creative Maker of the Year Award
C
annes Lions bestowed the first honorary Creative Maker of the Year award as part of the 70th edition of the International Festival of Creativity. The inaugural award was presented to legendary filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, and producer Spike Lee at the Festival. Simon Cook, CEO of LIONS, said: “We know that world-class creative work takes so much to deliver. Since its inception, Cannes Lions has always been about the makers and the creatives who walk through walls to realize their vision. Going forward, this award will honor creative makers from any discipline who are inspirational beacons for our whole community. In our 70th year, it seems appropriate that the inaugural Creative Maker award should go to a director. It’s a huge honor to present Spike Lee, one of the most influential figures in contemporary cinema and culture, with this accolade live at the Festival. Spike embodies the spirit of this award as a maker that strives to make creative stories and show the world what they can only
see in their imaginations.” The award, supported by Black At Cannes, honored multi-Lion award winner Spike Lee, whose unparalleled body of work has made an indelible mark on filmmaking, television, and the creative industry. And as the founder of his own creative agency, Spike DDB, his mission has been to help brands change the world by keeping pace with culture. Commenting on receiving the award, Spike Lee, filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, and producer, said: “I’m honored to accept the inaugural Cannes Lions Creative Maker of the Year award for my contributions to the advertising industry, but a reminder: “We keep having these obstacles, these hurdles, we have to face, and we have to keep knocking them down.” I said this in 1997 and still say it today.” Lee’s career spans over 30 years, receiving fivetime Oscar® nominations for Do The Right Thing, 4 Little Girls, and the critically acclaimed hit feature
BlacKkKlansman that he co-wrote and directed, going on to win the Oscar® for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2018. He was also awarded an Honorary Oscar® in 2015 for his lifetime achievement and contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences. Lee is also known for his legendary Jordan Brand TV commercials and marketing campaigns with Michael Jordan. Commenting on the award and Spike’s legacy as a world-renowned creative maker, Shannon Watkins, Chief Marketing Officer at Jordan Brand, said: “Spike’s focus on telling stories, combined with his ability to capture the pulse of Black Culture, sets him apart from others in the industry. Spike created iconic memories and helped to build the soul of what Jordan Brand represents. Maybe the shoes on our feet wouldn’t make us jump as high as MJ, but just for a moment, we might feel the confidence and self-belief of the greatest to ever do it.” Peter O Ukhurebor, Founder of Black At Cannes, commented: “Spike Lee is a creative role model who has paved the way for so many black creatives. The Creative Maker of the Year award inspires us to continue spearheading the creation of pathways for diverse voices and promoting inclusion and equity across the global creative industry. We applaud the partnership.” Further information on the Awards and Festival, including how to attend next year, June 17-21, 2024, can be found at www.canneslions.com.

EMPOWER ATLANTA During our interview, Rodney Bullard openly discussed changing careers, The Same House, and the Beloved Benefit. Q. What inspired you to leave Chickfil-A after working there for 12 years to become The Same House’s CEO? A. I was inspired not to leave corporate America but to take corporate America and galvanize not just Chick-fil-A but to galvanize other corporate relationships that we have accrued into focusing on our community’s toughest issues. We started The Same House as a public benefit corporation, which is really an effort to do good. We have put on the Beloved Benefit since 2019. We had Bruno Mars, Steve Harvey, TI, and Congressman John Lewis at one of his last public events. We did not know he was ill at the time. He said very profoundly, “We’re one people, one family. We all belong to the same house, the house of Atlanta, Georgia”. That stuck with me in the sense that if we all belong to the same house, then it is our responsibility, individually and collectively, to build this house. When I decided to leave Chick-fil-A to do something different, it was to bring together not just corporate Atlanta but the community, politicians, and others so we could build this house together. I thought that it would be easier to do that from another platform. So it was clear that this was not a brand effort. This was not us trying to aggrandize Chick-fil-A or Coca-Cola.

In a city like Atlanta, we have an unfortunate statistic. We have the greatest economic inequality in the country. If you’re a child born into poverty in Atlanta, you only have a 4.7% chance of getting out of poverty and going to some self-sufficient wealth. That’s the lowest in the country. But the blessing is that we have wonderful organizations, sponsors, and wealth in Atlanta. We can do something collectively about the problems of our city. Q, What is the mission of The Same House? 2023 ENTERTAINMENT EDITION bring people together. We say that we’re one city worlds apart. But it is to bring people together so that we can collectively improve the plight of our community. Regardless of our differences or what we talk about outwardly, we know at the end of the day, we all live in the same geography and that the problems that impact you also impact me. Doctor King once said, “I can’t be who I’m supposed to be if you can’t be who you’re supposed to be.” We are all tied into this fabric, this garment of life, this garment of destiny, and so that is our mission very simply. Q. What are some examples of how you’ve seen the work of The Same House make a difference? A. The Beloved Benefit in 2019 raised an additional accretive 5.3 million dollars. Those dollars went to organizations working on the west side of Atlanta and uplifting that community. Then in 2022, we were able to have the Beloved Benefit again. We had Usher and Maroon Five. We were able to focus our efforts on economic mobility and ensuring that we were really trying to help those in our community who were struggling with just getting out of poverty. In 2022, we raised over $6 million. We then distributed those dollars back into organizations that were doing the work. We want to continue to bring those resources to bear and make them not just old dollars but new dollars that move the needle and help people in a different way. We’re excited about that. This year, we are having another Beloved Benefit on August 24th at the Georgia World Congress Center. John Legend will be performing. Again we have wonderful sponsors like Chickfil-A, The Home Depot, and Southern Company as our premier sponsors. But we’ve got other corporations like CocaCola, Delta, UPS, and Quick Trip. We’re excited about the organizations that are part of this effort. We’re also excited about the individuals that are part of this effort. Dan Cathy has championed this since day one and has thought that this was worth his time, energy, and treasure. We are very pleased and blessed by his support for the production of this event because you’ll see this is no small event. This is a big-time event. This is like the Grammys in Atlanta. This year we will broadcast or rebroadcast elements of the Beloved Benefit on Atlanta News First, Peachtree TV, and Gray Media. Gray Media has channels throughout the state of Georgia. We will rebroadcast this effort throughout the state of Georgia to inspire others in other communities to do something similar. Q. Will assistance be provided to organizations outside of the West side? Or only to the West side?
A. We initially started on the West side with the first Beloved Benefit, and now it is Metro Atlanta-wide. The organizations that we are supporting this year are the Boys and Girls Club, the Russell Center for Entrepreneurship, First Step Staffing, the Urban League of Greater Atlanta, and the West Side Future Fund. So, organizations that have reached, in some cases, well beyond Georgia and, in most cases, throughout the state of Georgia. Q. Are you all helping to fund smaller nonprofits or just the larger organizations? A. That’s a great question, Towanna. So, in 2019 we had what we call beneficiaries and then beacons. The beneficiaries are larger organizations that can receive a large check because, quite frankly, we are raising enough money to distribute anywhere from $500,000 to a million dollars to an organization. Organizations have to be large enough, and they have to have a mission big enough, they have to have a clientele that’s expansive enough to receive that type of donation. We also had beacons which were smaller organizations in some cases. Those were organizations that we gave $50,000 to. Truist Bank sponsored and gave that money to those organizations. Through Truist’s generosity, those organizations got notoriety. They also obviously got the dollars, but we set them up with business consulting. McKinsey came along and provided business consulting to these organizations as well, so they don’t always stay small. That they grow and become bigger, and in many cases, some of these organizations, these beacons, are doing the grassroots work on the ground. It’s helping people know that there is a plight out there and that our neighbors need your help. Q. Where can our readers purchase tickets for the Beloved Benefit? A. They can go online to www.belovedbenefit.org and purchase tickets there. Tickets are on currently on sale. We only have about 2,500 tickets for the Beloved Benefit event. Many of the tickets are sold corporately. However, what we pride ourselves on and what we really appreciate about this event is that 20 to 30% of the tickets are given away to the community. It is not a black tie or stuffy event. It is a party with a purpose. It is come as you are. It is not round tables, but it’s long tables. We, in fact, have intermixed the seating. If we live in the same house, we need to sit together. We need to have a common table, and that is what we perpetuate on that evening. I also want your readers to know that there is an opportunity to win tickets to the Beloved Benefit as well. We are on all social media platforms. There is currently a promotion that we have on Instagram. Please follow us @ Wearethesamehouse and @Belovedbenefit for additional information.

cout Productions revealed their latest docuseries, Teardrops on the Dance Floor, which will be directed by acclaimed director Ian Bonhôte. The docuseries will take a look at the evolution of dance music from its early roots in 20th-century club culture through today’s pop culture. Bonhôte directed McQueen (2018), Rising Phoenix (2020), and the upcoming Christopher Reeve documentary. Scout Productions recently released two acclaimed docuseries, MerPeople on Netflix and The Secrets of Hillsong on FX and Hulu. Teardrops on the Dance Floor is an ode to dance music and its many subgenres, a deep dive into the work of some of today’s most successful DJs, and an exploration of their influences over fifty years of music, dancing, and raving. Each episode will blend past and present, verité and archival, into a dynamic, seamless storytelling that will entertain audiences with the hits they love, the club scene they crave, and the genre that defines their lives. Whether you’ve attended an EDM festival, a rave, or just listened to any of today’s pop on your AirPods, you will recognize the feeling of each decade – and be shocked at how much these disparate modes of music have in common. Teardrops on the Dance Floor, inspired by club culture stories curated by legendary remix and dance music marketing executive Brad Mason LeBeau, will take a look at the cultural and historical context in which dance music was born and then grew. “Scout Productions has a strong track record of producing quality documentary series,” said Ian Bonhôte. “By marrying our creative styles to bring this history to life, I am confident that together we will bring forth a docuseries that not only highlights the importance of this story but also showcases the profound influence of dance culture on our collective consciousness.” Rob Eric, Joel Chiodi, David Collins, and Michael Williams serve as executive producers for Scout Productions. Everyone Has A Story What’s Yours?
EMPOWER ATLANTA
By Towanna Hogue
I
remember growing up, my mother and grandmother would always tell me never to allow a man to put his hands on me. My grandfather would tell anyone I was dating or in a relationship with point blank, “If you ever feel the need to put your hands on her, you better bring her back home to us first. If not, you will have to deal with me.” My grandfather could come across as one the meanest and no-nonsense having man in the world and would always say the first thing that came out of his mouth with no filter whatsoever. But even with that mean exterior, I knew his love for me, and it made me feel safe. I would listen, smile, and think, “Yeah, what he said!” In all the relationships I had, physical abuse never happened to me. It was something I demanded and would never tolerate. I did see physical abuse happen to a few friends and young women while attending college. But no one ever talked about it. We would all act like we didn’t see or hear anything. I would feel thankful that it never happened to me. However, as an adult, I learned there were many other forms of abuse. No one ever told me to return home or leave a relationship if someone made me feel less than or had me questioning or second-guessing my worth. Or someone who disrupted my peace. Or hid or blocked access to money? Is that enough to leave or end a marriage? What I know and have learned now absolutely it is enough, especially when you know your worth. My excuse as to why I stayed in an unhealthy, mentally, emotionally, and financially abusive marriage was that I didn’t want to break up my family. My dad wasn’t in my life, and I did not want that for my children. Plus, I am a cancer survivor. Sickness can bring on financial challenges. I didn’t want that either. So, what am I to do? I will tell you what I did! I told him I was leaving him. He laughed and said, “How are you going to leave me? You don’t have any family or friends
(because we moved out of state). You don’t have any money. You have nothing!” I walked up to him, got in his face, and said, “I’m stepping out on faith!” I did just that and never looked back! One day when he went to work, I had enough friends to pack up and move everything out of our newly built custom home! I left him the bedroom set because I didn’t want that! I left one plate, fork, spoon, knife, pan, two washcloths, and towels, and I even took the refrigerator! I did leave him a dorm-sized one that was in our bedroom. When he called me after he returned home from work, he called me out of my name and said, “You took the refrigerator?” I will not say that it hasn’t been difficult because it has. I never thought I would become a divorced, single woman with three kids to raise alone. I have had both mental and physical challenges that I had to heal from, including financial strains and feeling like I had to carry the weight of the world on my shoulders because I mostly suffered in silence. I was embarrassed to share my “real” truth. Then one day, I decided if I was going to tell it, then I was going to tell it all. I would never allow anyone to weaponize my past against me. I wanted people to see an example of what “trouble doesn’t last always” looks like! I wanted to use my experiences as a teachable moment. God has been good to me. Even through my trials and tribulations, I’m Still Standing! I wrote and self-published two books. Through It All, I’m Still Standing… Bringing Awareness to Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Emotional Abuse is a book that allowed me to stand in my truth. The purpose of the book is to teach others not to suffer in silence. To know your worth and to never allow anyone to disrupt your peace. I also want people to understand the meaning of narcissism and understand the signs. I listed below some of the tendencies my children and I have dealt with throughout the years. Not everyone’s experience is the same. Signs of narcissistic personality disorder 1. Sense of self-importance 2. Arrogant

In the introduction, I also share my story of being told I would never be able to have children again. The doctors said one thing, but God had something else in store for me and blessed me with my youngest son. I am the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Empower Atlanta Magazine, a women-led, DBE and MBE-certified publication. I barely had two nickels to rub together, but I was able to create a legacy for my children and their children. Doors have opened that I never thought was even possible. Always dare to dream! What is the FedNow Service?
The
FedNow Service is a new instant payment infrastructure developed by the Federal Reserve that allows financial institutions of every size across the U.S. to provide safe and efficient instant payment services. Through financial institutions participating in the FedNow Service, businesses and individuals can send and receive instant payments in real-time, around the clock, every day of the year. Financial institutions and their service providers can use the service to provide innovative instant payment services to customers, and recipients will have full access to funds immediately, allowing for greater financial flexibility when making time-sensitive payments.
When will the FedNow Service launch, and what features will be available?
What is ISO 20022, and what role does it play in the FedNow Service?
The Federal Reserve will take a phased approach to the FedNow Service. The initial soft launch was on July 20, 2023, and focused on core functionality to meet market needs and help financial institutions transition to 24x7x365 operations.
ISO 20022 is a financial industry messaging standard which provides a universal language for global systems and networks to communicate with each other. The FedNow Service will introduce messages to instruct customer credit transfers, requests for payment, and interbank liquidity transfers, as well as FedNow system and account reporting messages.
What are the benefits of the FedNow Service? The FedNow Service expects to provide the following public benefits through its instant payment infrastructure:
What resources is FedNow making available to help smaller organizations implement the ISO 20022 specifications?
Safety — resiliency through redundancy and the Federal Reserve’s role in times of crisis Efficiency — healthy competition with the private sector Accessibility — the ability to reach the nation’s more than 10,000 diverse depository institutions
We are in the process of developing ISO 20022 education programs for business and technology specialists, along with testing opportunities that will be made available through the MyStandards portal. These programs will help your organization prepare for FedNow Service implementation, whether you are using in-house solutions or an outsourced arrangement with a service provider such as a core processor.
How will the FedNow Service compare to other faster payment services already in the market?
Is the FedNow Service replacing cash? Is it a central bank digital currency?
The growing demand for instant payments has driven the creation of several faster payment systems, but some differences exist. Some are closed-loop systems (PayPal, Venmo, Square’s Cash App), others are open-loop (VisaDirect, MasterCard Send, Zelle, RTP, etc.), and some settle payments between financial institutions on a deferred basis, while others settle in near real-time.
The FedNow Service is a payment service the Federal Reserve is making available for banks and credit unions to transfer funds for their customers. The FedNow Service is neither a form of currency nor a step toward eliminating any form of payment, including cash.
• • •
What are the incentives for individual users to adopt instant payments? Through financial institutions’ participation in the FedNow Service, businesses and individuals will be able to send and receive instant payments conveniently, for example, using mobile devices. Recipients will have full access to funds immediately, giving them greater flexibility to manage their money and make time-sensitive payments. The ability to have full access to funds immediately is especially important in times of crisis.

like Eem Triplin, Bktherula, TiaCorine, and D.C. The Don showed what they were made of, and acclaimed acts like Freddie Gibbs, 03 Greedo, and BONES found some of their most devoted fans. A few hours before Rocky took the stage, hardcore punk phenoms Turnstile made their Rolling Loud debut, making them the first rock band to perform a set at a Rolling Loud event. Though they may seem like a surprising fit for the festival, the culture and sounds of hip-hop and guitar-based music have been on a collision course for years. Playboi Carti’s headlining set on Friday made ample use of nu-metal riffs, and artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Trippie Redd have incorporated punk aesthetics and sounds into their “rage rap” milieu. Fans at the main stage were more than ready for Turnstile, whose melodic punk sound resonated and inspired nearly as rapturous a reaction as the more familiar artists. It’s safe to say that Turnstile won some new fans at Rolling Loud Miami. Rolling Loud Miami concludes Rolling Loud’s festival season. It was a year of expansion, with new festivals in Thailand and Germany and a triumphant return to Los Angeles. Miami was a fitting capper, bringing the ultimate hip-hop experience for tens of thousands of fans. Led by its founders Matt Zingler and Tariq Cherif, Rolling Loud plans to do even bigger things in 2024. Stay tuned.

Q: Is there a certain societal issue you are strongly passionate about discussing? If so, what is it, and do you see changes being made by bringing additional awareness to the issue? A: One of the most critical issues we’ve discussed on Black Girl Stuff is this reckoning and renaissance that Black women are having about finally putting ourselves first, and young Black women are leading this rally cry. This is something we’ve never really seen before, as Black women have always sacrificed themselves for their families, their communities, and society at large. In the past, we have led movements from the sidelines and effected change behind the scenes – yet, never fully benefited from our tireless labor. But now, Black women are finally rewarding themselves. We are choosing to protect our peace, create our own wealth, be paid what we’re worth, pamper ourselves, and position ourselves at the front of the line. By discussing this Black women’s renaissance, the news is spreading fast, and terms like the #softlife are going viral. After centuries of sacrifice and hard labor, it’s about damn time. Affirmative Action By Towanna Hogue
M
erriam -Webster defines affirmative action as the use of policies, legislation, programs, and procedures to improve the educational or employment opportunities of members of certain demographic groups (such as minority groups, women, and older people) as a remedy to the effects of long-standing discrimination against such groups). Affirmative action was supposed to levy the playing field and give minorities a fighting chance to succeed at our place of employment and be admitted into a college/university, especially among those of a legacy admission into college. Recently, the Supreme Court has made it against the law for colleges/universities to consider race as a factor in the admissions process. This ruling will reduce the ethnic diversity of students. Some have said since the ruling that the admissions process needs an overall restructuring. Before the ruling, nine states had already banned racebased affirmative action for public colleges/ universities, including Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and Washington. Many of these states had already seen a decline in minorities
attending their colleges/universities before the ruling. In previous reports, data showed a decline in the state university systems in both California and Michigan. Despite creating other strategetic recruitment tactics, their efforts have failed. Zack Mabel, a professor of education and economics at Georgetown and an author of the research, stated, “The more information that you are able to consider about the educational opportunities and disadvantages that an individual has had in their life, the better you as an admissions officer are going to be at understanding who is going to be a qualified applicant.” Mildred García, president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, stated, “Fifty years since the passage of civil rights legislation has not been nearly enough to address or correct more than 350 years of discriminatory practices intended to keep people of color away from higher education institutions or, starting in the 19th century, severely limit their prospects of increasing their educational attainment.
Although the Court’s decision threatens to move the country backward, the Biden-Harris Administration stated they would fight to preserve the hard-earned progress made to advance racial equity and civil rights and expand educational opportunities for all Americans. President Biden is calling on colleges and universities, when selecting among qualified applicants, to give serious consideration to the adversities students have overcome, including: the financial means of a student or their family; where a student grew up and went to high school; and personal experiences of hardship or discrimination, including racial discrimination, that a student may have faced. The Biden-Harris Administration believes in doing so, colleges and universities can fully value aspiring students who demonstrate resilience and determination in the face of deep challenges. However, is this enough to help make a difference? The United States has taken many steps backward in the past year. With relaxed gun laws, the overturn of Roe vs. Wade that restricted abortion rights, not to mention voting restrictions, inflation, etc., and now the banning of affirmative action. It all contributes to the downfall and negative impact of maintaining and creating more people to sustain in a lower socio-economic status. Not to mention the new Florida social studies curriculum on African American History for middle school students now includes a lesson on how “slaves developed skills” that could be used for “their personal benefit.” Enough is enough! Call slavery would it truly was, dehumanizing, to say the least!

YOUR FUTURE IS NOW: HOW THE RECORDING ACADEMY SUPPORTS THE NEXT GENERATION OF BLACK MUSIC LEADERS By Jada Alexis
T
he Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective (BMC) and Amazon Music select 5 HBCU students to receive an immersive rotation program opportunity and $10,000 in scholarships. We spoke with Ryan Butler (The Recording Academy’s VP of DEI) and students Zsana Hoskins (Senior, Howard University), Jasmine Gordon (Junior, Spelman University), and Jayden Potts (Sophomore, Jackson State University) about the “Your Future Is Now” scholarship and The Recording Academy’s efforts to support the next generation of black music leaders. Please take a look at our conversation below. Q. How did you all learn about the “Your Future Is Now” scholarship? Jasmine: I was actually researching information about GRAMMY U, and I reached out to the rep from the D.C. chapter. He went to Howard University. I pretty much was just like, “Hey, please tell me a little bit about GRAMMY U.” He was really receptive and told me all about it. Then, he told me there was going to be a scholarship
coming out soon. So, the scholarship came out, and I immediately applied.
Jayden: I found out about the “Your Future Is Now” scholarship through my mother and a few friends that sent me the link. Once I saw it, I knew I was the perfect fit per the description of the scholarship. Zsana: For me, it was Instagram. I saw an ad on Instagram, and I was like, “Ok, I fit the description for the requirements.” Q. I know there are a lot of kids that would feel like the requirements to apply for the scholarship is a lot. Can you explain what are the requirements for the scholarship? Ryan: It was an essay, a creative video, a transcript, and a letter of rec. So, typical scholarship deliverables. Nothing outrageous, but I will say the tradeoff is worth it. I feel like the time they spent making the video and time spent trying to collect those letters of recommendation, and writing the essay; I think the value of the program was worth the tradeoff of the time that it took you to do the application. I mean, not only do you get the scholarship, but you get to have a one-week immersive experience. Q. Is there a specific career path that you all are on, or are you still figuring it out? Ryan: I’m going to let them answer, but this is the beauty of it and why all of them were selected because they each have a different career
43
2023 ENTERTAINMENT EDITION goal in mind, but this program is still beneficial to whatever that trajectory is. And even if it changes, I see the passion for the music industry and the passion for being in this space thrives in each of them right now.
[and Roc Nation] offices. We worked out of the Amazon Music offices over in Williamsburg. They also went to our Recording Academy office in New York. So, they had a real industry experience. They got to feel like industry execs.
we go and take the Academy to campus, and we give a full red-carpet experience with a showcase with talent and professionals from the industry who come and give feedback directly to the creators about their performances,
They were hanging with me and my team, so, they were getting in the same cars we were getting into, going to the same dinners we were going to. That was in September. Then we also did YOLA. YOLA was in town getting ready to do a show. We went to her soundcheck, and she stopped and she spoke with all the students. There’s so much that happened during that week. Then to top it all off, the culmination was we flew them all out to Los Angeles, and they got to experience VIP treatment during GRAMMY Week. From RA Honors, where we honored Missy Elliott, Dr. Dre, Lil Wayne, and Sylvia Rhone, to GRAMMY House, to the GRAMMY Awards.
about their songwriting [if they are performing an original song], and about their production. We’re really investing in both professionals and creators of the future.
Zsana: I’m majoring in journalism, so I’ve always wanted to tell the stories of not just other artists but music in general. I have a musical background, so I always wanted to pursue music – and that’s my minor. I always wanted to cover music from the perspective of somebody who understands it and also has a background in performing. But my main goal is to have a huge media conglomerate and own my own record label, but like Ryan said, there are so many different routes in the industry. So, I think I’m going to stick to reporting, but it could change. I may want to do something a little more behind the scenes, but that’s definitely always been my main goal, to be a storyteller. Jasmine: I want to go full-time in the music industry doing brand marketing and creative design. My ultimate goal is to eventually work my way up to be the president of a record label. I also would hope to be the head of marketing. Jayden: My major is music technology, so that consists of production and sound engineering. So, I want to be a producer or engineer, but then I also want to dabble in an A&R role a little bit.
Q. What was the decision process like when selecting recipients?
Q. What did the one-week immersive experience entail? Ryan: We took these students to New York. They attended the Lil Nas X concert at Radio City Music Hall. They went to see Nicki Minaj at Rolling Loud. We went to the Republic Records
Ryan: We had a working group that worked on the initial review of the application. There are some people who don’t meet all the requirements, so they’re out. So, we do an initial review to get it down to our top applications. Then, we bring in members of Black Music Collective to kind of rank and say, based on your top 20, here’s where we would pick our top five. So, we synthesize all of that and decide based on our initial fit plus the recommendation of our members in the leadership council from Black Music Collective. Q. Outside of this scholarship, what else does the Recording Academy do to support the next generation of Black professionals? Ryan: We have our HBCU Love Tour, where
And then overall, what we’re doing as the DEI department with Black Music Collective. When I first started at the Academy, our Black representation and voting membership was low. That voting membership was around 9%. When the Black Music Collective started in October 2020, it had gone up to about 11%. Now we are over 22%, and we have an aggressive goal of 33%. We feel that 33% more aligns with the impact of Black creators in music. With the market shares, the amount of music that is sold, and the amount of money that is being made by record labels who have Black artists on their rosters. And so, for us, 33% felt more like the number that we needed to hit versus the census data that would’ve kept us around 14%. So, I think most importantly, what we’re doing is being a thought leader in this space and using our brand as the Recording Academy, that’s known for putting on the biggest night in music, the GRAMMYs, to influence the rest of the industry on what they can do, because if we can do this as a nonprofit and put on a show, imagine what a label could do. Imagine what an agency could do. Imagine what those companies with much higher revenue than us could do if they really invested in the community. So, I look at it less as diversity, equity, and inclusion and more as community investment. I’m just investing in a community that historically has not had access.
Rob Hardy Director, Producer & Writer
ROB HARDY’S MISSION: EMPOWERING DIVERSITY IN GEORGIA’S FILM INDUSTRY
R
ob Hardy is an established director, producer, and writer who has worked on numerous hit shows and movies such as Power, How to Get Away With Murder, Grey’s Anatomy, All American, and many more. While working on projects, he noticed a need for crew diversity on various sets. That led him and his wife, Shaun, to address the issue by forming a 501(c)(3) organization, The Amazing Stories Foundation, to strengthen and diversify the production workforce in Georgia. Looking at how diverse Atlanta is, they thought it’d be a great idea to take advantage of it and build a pipeline of highly qualified talent. According to The Georgia Film Office, productions spent $4.4 billion during the 2022 fiscal year. The state became attractive through economic incentives offered to production companies. Rainforest Films, now known as Rainforest Entertainment, led by Director/ Producer Rob Hardy and his then partner Will Packer (Producer/Executive), was one of the first companies to benefit from the Georgia Film Tax Credit with its film, “The Gospel” in 2006. “In addition to providing production jobs that range across a variety of skills, accounting to carpentry to engineering and graphic design, productions are using local vendors, eating at Georgia restaurants, and staying in our hotels,” said Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in an announcement by his office and the Georgia Film Office in 2022. The work being done with
The Amazing Stories Film/TV Apprenticeship Program aims to connect Atlanta’s diverse residents with the opportunities that the film and television industry has to offer. Although the film industry has low employment barriers, individuals, especially those of color, face cultural and relational barriers to entry. A Production Assistant, the entry-level position in the film/tv industry, does not require licensure or education. However, individuals need to be trained with the necessary skills and have relationships to access these jobs. In film/tv, there is no time for workers to learn, as every paid worker is a crucial part of the project’s success. Vetting, training, grooming, and mentoring are necessary to maintain the industry’s culture. The Apprenticeship Program offered by Amazing Stories for Film/TV is a remarkable opportunity for those interested in the film and television industry. With a focus on trust, experience, and industry connections, the program provides pre-approved access to sets for apprentices. Production companies have the chance to support these apprentices. They are further aided by partnerships with WorkSource Atlanta and Fulton County. During the two-week training period, ten trainees receive 80 hours of top-notch instruction led by industry leader Linda Burns and guest professionals from the Georgia film industry. Each trainee receives a $1000 stipend, incentivizing their participation. Following this
intensive classroom training, the trainees are placed on their first production set with mentors from within the industry. Their esteemed partners, including the City of East Point, Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney General Entertainment, AT&T, and ASF Mentors, provide personalized guidance and support to their trainees, helping them secure post-program and day-playing opportunities throughout the program and beyond. After six months of rigorous training, mentorship, and placement, the apprentices, mentors, and partners come together for a celebration that honors their hard work and dedication. This event marks the end of the program for each cohort and acknowledges the creation of exceptional film professionals. Each trainee receives a certificate of completion and a program gift as a lasting reminder of their transformative journey. The Film/TV Apprenticeship Program by the Amazing Stories Foundation has been doing amazing work since 2019. So far, they have trained 42 apprentices and an impressive 95% of them have gone on to secure paid Production Assistant jobs. As a result of the program, their alumni are now members of several unions, including IATSE Local 479, Local 600, and Teamsters Local 728. Visit www.amazingstoriesfoundation.org to learn more.
Get to Know Pandora’s Vice President of Music Programming, Joshua “J1” Raiford By Jada Alexis
J
oshua “J1” Raiford is the Vice President of Music Programming for the largest adsupporting audio entertainment streaming service in the United States, Pandora. We spoke with J1 about his journey to be in the position he is in today, what his job is like, and what it’s like to be part of the music industry. Below is our conversation. Get to Know Pandora’s VP of Music Programming, Joshua Raiford. Q. Where did you grow up? A. I lived in New York all throughout high school, and then I came to Atlanta to attend Morehouse. Q. What led you to your job at Pandora? A. I’ve always wanted to be in the music business, but I started working in it in high school. I did internships at different record labels. My first internship was at this small label called Red Ant Records because one of my neighbors was an executive there. I worked at Warner Brothers while I was in high school and college; I was a college rep. Then, when I was DJing in Atlanta, things started picking up for me. I was doing a gig almost every night of the week, and I got the opportunity to be on the radio for Hot 107.9, where I got my start. I started as an intern and
then uh became an on-air mixer. Then, once I got on the radio, I realized the person who got all the power was the program brand director. So I aspired and focused on learning all I could to be to get myself in a position to be a program director. I became assistant program director of Hot 107.9 and then became program director of two stations in Indianapolis. These were all with Urban One. I got recruited by Pandora at the beginning of 2019 because they were looking for a head of hip-hop, and I interviewed for it. I got the position. I found out that they had an office in Atlanta and asked if I could be located or based down there, and they granted my request. So here I am. Q. What made you choose Atlanta? A. I just love the city, and I love the culture so much. So, after I graduated, I didn’t go back to New York. I stayed down here until about 2016, when I moved to Indy. I moved to Indy and then to DC. Spending time away from Atlanta, it just made me realize how special the city was and how much I missed it. Plus, most of my friends, my frat brothers, and then my parents, they left New York and moved down here. So, I always knew I wanted to come back. I knew I needed
that time away from the city to develop my skills, resume, and to develop as an executive. The plan was always to come back to Atlanta. I love the city. Q. What would you say are some of your favorite aspects of working in the music industry or just at Pandora? A. It’s creating different events or opportunities for the culture. Whether it’s our playback series where we’ll have an artist come in front of an intimate audience of fans, DJs, influencers, college students and sits down and talks about their music, craft, and their journey. I like being able to meet artists or meet new artists when they’re just getting a buzz, or they’re just getting signed to a label and playing a part in their career. Also, just being able to put people on or put other people in positions of power and give our people opportunities. Follow J1 on Instagram @posterchildJ1

NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR CREDIT COUNSELING LAUNCHES “Make it R.E.A.L” (Renter Equity at Last) to address renter insecurity across the country New Survey reveals 62% of American renters feel insecure abou their current rental housing • People 35+ are more likely than people under 35 to blame the tenant (57% to 41%) in landlord-tenant issues; • Only 36% of people feel they fully understand their “rights and opportunities” when it comes to eviction;
T
he U.S. housing insecurity has dramatically increased in recent decades, and its effect on mental health, financial systems, and neighborhoods is increasingly felt. After all, a lack of stable housing can impede interpersonal relationships as well as the ability to work or pursue higher education. Like other forms of socio-economic bias, housing insecurity is disproportionately experienced by Black women. A new campaign from the National Foundation for Credit Counselling (NFCC), supported by the Wells Fargo Foundation, aims to reverse this trend. “Make it R.E.A.L.” raises awareness about housing instability and the unique challenges renters face. Through financial education, testimonials, and inroads to debt management counseling from authorized NFCC advisors – both in-market and via tele-sessions – the campaign aims to mitigate involuntary moves such as notices, evictions, and liens and make housing stability real for all. “Post-COVID-19 rent moratoriums have uncovered a pressing need to assist individuals and families facing housing instability,” said Barry Coleman, Vice President, Program Management and Education at NFCC. “With our partners at the Wells Fargo Foundation, the NFCC launched a summer campaign to educate the public about the instabilities renters face and drive awareness of the resources available to them through the NFCC.” The Census Bureau reliably estimates 36% of the nation’s households rent. The NFCC recently surveyed over 2000 U.S. renters about their experiences, goals, and fears; key findings include: • Fifty percent of renters have some kind of personal experience with eviction. For Black Americans, that number increases to 57%;
• The dominant emotion associated with eviction is “sadness;”
with household incomes of $75,000 or less, between June 6 and 13, 2023. The survey was administered using a nonprobabilitybased sample, and quotas were used to ensure the sample base was over-indexed to ensure Black renters represent approximately 25% of respondents. Researchers reviewed all responses for quality control.
• Half of those surveyed (50%) aren’t aware that financial literacy and debt management programs for renters exist. Housing instability involves the inability to pay rent, consistent relocation, overcrowding, and excessive spending on housing. According to Bloomberg, eight million rental households are currently behind on their rent, with Black families in Southern states experiencing the highest rates of housing hardship. As a part of the campaign, the NFCC will focus on educating renters about their rights and opportunities. The organization helps consumers develop comprehensive financial plans that address credit card debt, student loans, and medical debt. By combating unsecured debt, individuals are better positioned to prevent eviction or foreclosure. The NFCC, with a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation, used the Glimpse human response platform (www.glimpsehere.com) to conduct an online survey of 2,000 U.S. renters
About The NFCC Founded in 1951, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) is the oldest nonprofit dedicated to improving people’s financial well-being. With 1,215 NFCC Certified Credit Counselors serving 50 states and all U.S. territories, our NFCC Certified Credit Counselors are financial advocates, empowering millions of consumers to take charge of their finances through one-on-one financial reviews that address credit card debt, student loans, housing decisions, and overall money management. RENTING VS. OWNING - WHAT’S BEST FOR ME?
hould I rent or own a home? That is a question a lot of people ask themselves. There is no “one size fits all” answer, as it really depends on your personal situation. For instance, if you plan to be in a certain area for years, it may be best to own. On the other hand, if you move frequently for work, lifestyle, or other reasons, renting may be best. When you own your home, your monthly payments go towards growing your personal equity. When you rent, the monthly payments go to your landlord, and you will not receive a return on the money you have paid. Either way, it is not an easy decision and is made much harder with rising home prices and rental rates. Still undecided? Let’s discuss the pros and cons of both! Pros of Owning There are several benefits of owning a home. First, homeownership provides a sense of stability and security. Unlike renting, owning a home means having control over your living space and making changes or improvements at your leisure. Additionally, owning a home can be a good investment, as property values tend to appreciate over time. Homeownership can also provide tax benefits, such as deducting mortgage interest from your taxes. Lastly, owning a home can give you a sense of pride and accomplishment as it is a major milestone in many people’s lives. Cons of Owning Owning a home has several cons that should be considered. First, the initial upfront costs, including a down payment and closing costs, can be quite expensive, although
some programs and options can offset some if not all, the costs. Second, homeowners are responsible for all maintenance and repairs, which can be time-consuming and costly. Additionally, property taxes and insurance premiums can also be a significant financial burden as they can increase over time. Finally, owning a home ties you down to a specific location, which can limit job opportunities and make it difficult to move with a moment’s notice. Pros of Renting Renting a home comes with several benefits. First, it provides flexibility and lower upfront costs as you are not tied down to a long-term
commitment. Second, it allows for easier budgeting, as there are no unexpected expenses for repairs or maintenance. Additionally, renting a home may provide access to amenities such as a fitness center or pool that may be costly to own. Renting can also be a great option for those who do not have the financial means to purchase a home or prefer not to take on the responsibilities that come with homeownership. Cons of Renting There are several cons to renting a home. One of the biggest downsides is the lack of control over the property. Renters cannot make changes or improvements to the home without the landlord’s permission. Also, those same changes and improvements will benefit your
landlord when you move. Additionally, rent payments can be subject to an increase at the end of a lease. Renting can also mean that the home may not feel as permanent or secure as owning a home. Finally, the money you pay monthly for your rent helps your landlord build their equity and not your own. The decision between renting and owning ultimately depends on personal preferences and financial situation. Make the decision that best fits your lifestyle and budget.

The Boiling Point: How Chad Dillon Revolutionized Atlanta’s Seafood Scene
C
had Dillion is a restauranteur and tech entrepreneur born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from Howard University, Chad landed his first major tech position with a leading multinational tech corporation, Microsoft. After his time at the company, he created one of the first mobile music streaming and social apps, SongPlay, launched in 2013. After acquiring the app, he moved to Atlanta in 2015, continuing his entrepreneurial journey but expanding into the nightclub and hospitality space. In 2019, Chad stepped out on faith and opened The Boiler Seafood Atlanta in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Atlanta, Buckhead. The restaurant was a huge success, garnering over $7 million in earnings within its first year amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and is continuing to grow. Dillon’s portfolio includes The Seafood Menu, The Boiler, Sugar Baby Creamery, and more. Below is our conversation with Chad. Q. What inspired you to get into the food industry? A. I noticed a niche was missing. Crab legs were one of the hottest crazes when I came to Atlanta from New York. I noticed they didn’t have not one crab legs spot. So, there were no crabs in the whole vicinity of Atlanta. The closest thing was Juicy Crab, and that was in Smyrna. I got the idea that if I put some crab legs in the middle of the city, it would work, and that’s what
happened. Q. How did you find yourself gaining the capital to even open restaurants? A. I had a social media app when I was in New York that was acquired by Microsoft. That gave me the capital to go into other business investments. Q. What made you get into tech? A. My app was more like a streaming app. I predicted streaming ten years ago, and I was always big in the music scene, like the nightlife scene. I predicted that music would go into streaming and the benefits of streaming, and that’s how I got into tech while just dealing with music. Q. Are there other industries you would be willing to tap into? A. I’m building six restaurants right now. Once all those are open, I plan to return to tech. I have a couple more ideas in the tech industry and more apps I want to launch. Once I finish with this hospitality industry, I plan to return to tech and real estate. I plan to revisit those two industries once I’m done with the hospitality industry. I’ve noticed many commercial properties I now lease and plan on owning. So, I want to own most of my commercial property. My next move is real estate, where I can own the land and be there for 30 years, a hundred years, and not depend on a lease. That’s my next big initiative to own property. Q. What were some of the steps that you took to even get into the hospitality industry? A. The concept was the biggest thing, being creative and creating a concept people would want to visit. So, I think the first step I took was building a brand and creating a brand I know people want to visit. So, it’s bigger than just the food. Like the food is good, yes, but I wanted to build a brand where it could be nationwide, franchisable, or something that everybody knows. So, when I started the boiler, everything in it was clean regarding the logo. Everything was commercial, the design of the place, the
