N EW S BR IE F S CASH REWARDS FOR TEACHERS FAILED, STUDY FINDS Performance-based bonuses for teachers will now be a thing of the past. A new study finds financial incentives did not improve student performance. The program gave out more than $56 million in bonuses over the last three years. The Department of Education says it stopped the program back in January. DOE officials say the study confirms that was the right decision. The report found most schools gave out bonuses equally to staff instead of awarding some teachers more than others. HIGHER MUNI-METER RATES TAKE EFFECT It’s going to cost you more to park in certain parts of the city. The Department of Transportation is raising rates at Muni-Meters. Meters on Staten Island, in Queens and in Manhattan north of 96th Street will jump to $1 an hour for short-term parking. Long-term parking spaces will cost $8 per day. New Yorkers said they are not happy about the price hikes. “I think Bloomberg is just trying to raise revenue for the city, they ticket my car almost every day, it’s crazy,” said one city resident. “You feel like they try to squeeze you everywhere they can and parking rates going up, I mean there’s this new cigarette tax, just seems like it’s too much, there’s probably better ways to do things,” said another. Parking rates will go up at meters in the Bronx next week and in Brooklyn next month. FDNY FIRES UP NEW RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN The New York City Fire Department unveiled a new ad campaign as it prepares to take on a new class of firefighters for the first time in years. The department is looking to get a lot of people interested in taking the firefighter entrance exam, tentatively scheduled for January. More than $1 million will be spent on advertising the test. The FDNY is also looking to diversify as minorities make up only about 10 percent of the department. It’s an issue the department has been criticized for in the past. Speaking at Engine 37/Ladder 40 in Harlem, Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano said being a firefighter is the greatest job in the world. “In the first year an FDNY firefighter will earn about $40,000. That’s just the start. And that salary can increase to up to $100,00 in five year. Let me repeat that, up to $100,000 in five years. You get excellent health benefits and medical benefits for you and your family, and you enjoy those medical benefits for the rest of your life,” Cassano said. Applicants must sign up by September 15th. For more information, visit nyc.gov/fdny.
South Africa marks Mandela’s 93rd birthday with call to help others By ROBYN CURNOW JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Nelson Mandela turned 93 yesterday surrounded by family, as South Africans paid tribute to his legacy by performing at least 67 minutes of public service. Sixty-seven is the number of years the former South African president devoted to public service. Mandela — affectionately known by his clan name Madiba — spent the day in Qunu, where he grew up. South Africans held various activities to honor a man credited with helping bring together a nation separated by apartheid. Early yesterday about 12 million students sang a special “Happy Birthday” song in unison nationwide before they started their lessons. A group called “Bikers for Mandela” rode around the country for eight days doing volunteer service, including painting playgrounds and planting trees. Their trip was scheduled to end in Pretoria on Mandela Day. Mandela rarely makes public appearances, with his last sighting at the closing ceremonies of the World Cup in South Africa last year. He was briefly hospitalized in January for an acute respiratory infection, and continues to receive medical care at home. Under South Africa’s apartheid regime, Mandela spent 27 years in prison after being convicted of sabo-
South Africa’s iconic elder statesman Nelson Mandela, dubbed Madiba, with members of his family. tage and attempts to overthrow the government. He was released in 1990 and became president in 1994. The United Nations joined his foundation in urging the world to perform 67 minutes of public service. “Together, the best way we can thank Nelson Mandela for his work is by taking action for others and inspiring change,” U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said last week. “Tutor a child. Feed someone less fortunate. Care for your environment. Volunteer at a hospital or community center. Be a part of a global
movement to make the world a better place,” Ban said. U.S. President Barack Obama, whose wife, Michelle, met Mandela last month, said the icon is “a beacon for the global community” and for those who fight for justice. “Madiba sets the standard for service worldwide, whether we are students, shopkeepers or farmers, Cabinet ministers or presidents,” the president said in a statement. “He calls on us to serve our fellow human beings, and better our communities.” The United Nations designated July 18 as Mandela Day in 2009.
Educators in Atlanta cheating scandal told quit or be fired By DAVID BEASLEY ATLANTA — Dozens of Atlanta public school educators accused of cheating on standardized testing have until tomorrow to resign or be fired, local school officials said yesterday. The city’s interim school superintendent has given educators a threeday window starting yesterday to resign and avoid termination proceedings that will begin Thursday, Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Keith Bromery told Reuters. A state report issued earlier this month identified 178 teachers and principals who cheated on state standardized testing in 2009 as a way to inflate student scores. By resigning, those educators can avoid having a termination on their records, Bromery said. If they choose not to resign and are fired, they are entitled to appeal the decision and have a hearing. Prosecutors in three Atlanta-area counties are weighing whether to file criminal charges against the teachers and principals. The school system’s actions against the educators are unrelated to any criminal proceedings, Bromery said.
“This has solely to do with their status as an Atlanta Public Schools employee,” he said. “It does not have anything to do with any further prosecution.” The Georgia Association of Educators (GAE) is advising its members who have been accused in the scandal not to resign, said Michael McGonigle, legal services director for the advocacy group. “I think the school district is moving much too quickly,” he said. “It simply took the investigation’s report at face value,” he added, referring to the state report. The GAE will provide legal representation to any member who wants to appeal a termination, he said. “We think it’s worth the fight,” McGonigle said. The cheating discovered in 2009, found in 44 of the 56 Atlanta public schools examined, was prompted primarily by pressure to meet targets in a data-driven environment, according to a statement released by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal’s office earlier this month. “A culture of fear, intimidation and retaliation existed in Atlanta Public Schools, which created a conspiracy of silence,” the state report concluded. The 2009 cheating was said to include teachers erasing incorrect
answers on state standardized tests. Eighty-two teachers and principals have confessed to the cheating, according to the state report. Six principals refused to answer questions. The report concluded that there was a “major failure of leadership throughout Atlanta Public Schools with regard to the ethical administration” of the 2009 standardized exams known as the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests. Cheating occurred as early as 2001 and warnings several years ago of misconduct were ignored, the report said. Amid the investigation, Beverly Hall stepped down last month after nearly 12 years as superintendent of the Atlanta Public Schools. She had been named National Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators in 2009, the same year the state contends widespread cheating took place. The Atlanta school district has an enrollment of about 48,000 students and is smaller than many of the surrounding suburban school districts. Hall’s attorney has denied that the former superintendent knew in 2009 that widespread cheating had occurred.

Jefferson Avenue co-named ‘Bertram L. Baker Way’
By C. ZAWADI MORRIS Jefferson Avenue, between Tompkins and Throop has a new name: “Bertram L. Baker Way,” in honor of the former Bed-Stuy assemblyman and Brooklyn’s first Black politician, the late Bertram L. Baker. The proposal was submitted to Community Board 3 in 2009 by the Jefferson Avenue TNT Block Association, which represents Bertram Baker’s former block. The community board approved it and then forwarded the measure on to Council Member Al Vann who included the proposal in an omnibus
street co-naming bill with 66 other streets around New York City. The City Council voted on and approved the co-naming last year. “Bertram Baker pioneered the way for Black Brooklyn elected officials, such as myself,” said Vann. “I followed in his footsteps when I represented the offshoot of his district during my years in the New York State Assembly. The co-naming of his former block in his honor is well deserved. Bedford-Stuyvesant should be proud and hopefully all of our children will know the name of Bertram Baker and why Jefferson Avenue bears his name.” The co-naming and celebration of
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, First Lady Diane Patrick and Altovise Fleary, President of the Jefferson Ave. TNT Black Association the 125-year-old block took place Saturday, on Jefferson, between Tompkins and Throop at 3:00 pm, during the block party celebration. The late Baker’s granddaughter, Diane Patrick and her husband, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, were on hand for the historic naming ceremony. Gov. Patrick joined Assemblyman
Hakeem Jeffries at Common Grounds café, on 376 Tompkins Avenue, and talked about his powerful new memoir, A Reason to Believe, which tells how he overcame great obstacles to become the first Black governor of Massachusetts. Photos: Lem Peterkin
Attorney general considers investigation into News Corp. hacking WASHINGTON — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Friday that federal investigators are looking into requests by lawmakers to investigate News Corp., the multinational media conglomerate run by Rupert Murdoch. News Corp. is embroiled in a phone hacking scandal in the United Kingdom that forced one of its top executives, Rebekah Brooks, to resign Friday. Now, U.S. legislators say they want to know if the company engaged in that illegal activity in the United States “There have been serious allegations raised in that regard in Great Britain; there is an ongoing investigation,” Holder told reporters in Sydney,
Australia. “There have been members of Congress in the United States who have asked us to investigate those same allegations. And we are progressing in the regard using the appropriate federal agencies in the United Sates.” The office of prominent American attorney Brendan V. Sullivan Jr. confirmed to CNN that he has been retained by News Corp. The FBI launched its investigation into News Corp. after a report that the company’s employees or associates may have attempted to hack into phone conversations and voice-mail boxes of September 11 survivors, victims and their families, a federal law enforcement source told CNN Thurs-
day. Rep. Peter King, R-New York, earlier this week asked FBI Director Robert Mueller to investigate. News Corp. said Thursday it had no comment on the FBI investigation or the possibility of congressional hearings. Murdoch said Friday he planned to apologize amid the burgeoning phone-hacking scandal. “We are sorry for the serious wrongdoing that occurred,” Murdoch said in an ad that was to appear in newspapers on Saturday. “We are deeply sorry for the hurt suffered by the individuals affected.” The chief executive of News International, the subsidiary that runs
Tire blowout eyed in latest fatal New York tour bus crash By DAN WIESSNER A tire blowout might have caused the weekend crash of a tour bus near Rochester, New York, that killed two people and injured 35 others, authorities said. The bus, operated by Bedore Tours of North Tonawanda, was carrying 37 tourists from India to Niagara Falls from Washington, D.C. when it crashed on Sunday on Interstate 390 in the town of Avoca, about 55 miles southeast of Rochester, New York State Police said. A preliminary report indicated the crash may have been caused by a tire blowout, according to Don Rodbourn, a state police investigator.
But he said the cause officially remained under investigation. The identities of the passengers were not yet publicly released. The crash left two people dead, and three passengers were listed at hospitals in guarded condition, authorities said. The most seriously injured passengers were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where a hospital spokeswoman did not immediately return calls seeking more information. Calls to Bedore Tours also were not immediately returned. The accident was the most recent in a series of fatal crashes involving tour buses in the region. In late June, a tour bus driver
was killed and several passengers were injured when a bus traveling to New Jersey from Kentucky rearended a tractor trailer on the Pennsylvania Turnpike east of Pittsburgh. Four people were killed in May when the driver of a Sky Express bus headed to New York City fell asleep and the bus crashed in Virginia. The company was found to have dozens of past violations for fatigued driving. In March, 15 people were killed when a bus returning from a Connecticut casino veered off a highway in New York City. Two days later two people, including the driver, were killed in a bus crash on a New Jersey highway.
News Corp.’s British print media, resigned Friday in the wake of the scandal. Brooks, who was editor of News of the World at the time of some of the most serious allegations against the newspaper, has been under pressure to step down since the allegations began. In a statement released through News International, she said: “As chief executive of the company, I feel a deep sense of responsibility for the people we have hurt and I want to reiterate how sorry I am for what we now know to have taken place. ... While it has been a subject of discussion, this time my resignation has been accepted.” Concerns over the hacking of phones belonging to 9/11 victims and relatives appear to be traceable to a story published Wednesday by the Mirror, a British tabloid that includes a section it describes as “gossip gone toxic.” The newspaper cited “a source” who referred to a former police officer who now works as a private investigator. “The investigator is used by a lot of journalists in America and he recently told me that he was asked to hack into the 9/11 victims’ private phone data,” the source reportedly told the newspaper. The source told the Mirror the request came from News of the World, the newspaper at the center of the phone-hacking scandal in Britain. “He said that the journalists asked him to access records showing the calls that had been made to and from the mobile phones belonging to the victims and their relatives,” the newspaper said.

America is gaining weight and the most vulnerable populations are those with low levels of education and income, as well as those with Black or Hispanic heritage. The most obese state in the country, Mississippi, also happens to be the poorest. And with the rates of obesity increasing in 16 states last year and declining in none, America’s diet is influencing policy, politics and programs. Unfortunately, the system is working against people, instead of for them. An obesity study released this week through a joint effort by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reveals further evidence of a brewing crisis, not least in the area of food stamps. According to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization monthly Food Price Index for June 2011, world food prices increased by more than 39% June 2010. This comes at a time when more Americans than ever are participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known
as the program for food stamps. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the program added 17 million people in the last four years. What was once viewed as a social stigma is now an economic necessity for one in seven Americans. With the influx of food stamp participants, it’s important to note a recent study by Ohio State University’s Center for Human Resource Research that found food stamp recipients have a higher body mass index than non-recipients. Research scientist Jay Zagorsky, co-author of the study, says the cost of healthy food is a significant barrier to Americans on food stamps. “It would be very difficult for a shopper to regularly buy healthy, nutritious food on that budget.” Even as the rate of obesity is increasing in unprecedented amounts, junk food companies are lobbying to increase consumers’ ability to purchase fast food. Yum! Brands, owner of fast food restaurants KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, is lobbying to make food stamps a form of payment in Kentucky, the sixth most obese state in the

country. Only three other states - Arizona, California, and Michigan - currently allow food stamps as legal tender. Allowing residents of Kentucky, which is also the fifth worst state for fruit and vegetable consumption, greater access to nutritionally-devoid products would be extremely detrimental to their health. The main argument for allowing food stamps at fast food restaurants is that it provides equal access to food. However, the Centers for Disease Control offers grants to states to fight obesity and expand options for low-or-no income persons, which includes community gardens, new or improved grocery options and healthier independent stores like mom-and-pop cornershops. An increase in these options would eliminate the need for anyone to ingest fast food, regardless of income. In addition, the debate is raising the issue of how to actually define “food” itself. In New York City, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is currently at odds with food manufacturers, who are outraged over his proposal to blacklist sugary drinks and pop from food

The State of America’s children worst crises since slavery, and in many areas, Hispanic and American Indian children are not far behind. In the face of these deeply disturbing and growing child needs, some of our political leaders are heedlessly and heartlessly proposing that children, who have no belts to tighten, sacrifice their food and Head Start and other survival needs while asking nothing in sacrifice from powerful billionaires and corporations. Policies, programs, and essential services that we know help children survive and thrive—Medicaid and CHIP (the Children’s Health Insurance Program), the Maternal and Child Health Block Grant, WIC (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children), SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or Food Stamps), Early Head Start and Head Start, the Child Care and Development Block Grant, the Title I Education Program designed to help disadvantaged children, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act programs, Pell Grants, the Social Services Block Grant, and others—are all threatened with federal cuts and/or program changes that will further unravel the already porous safety net provided for poor children. These looming federal cuts will compound cascading cuts in state and local funding for urgently needed early childhood development, K12 education, higher education, mental health and other specialized treatment, and services for children in foster care and the juvenile justice system. Family stress has increased
while family stability has deteriorated, with lost jobs, reduced unemployment compensation, restricted assistance and public health programs, and more scarce affordable housing. As the president and Congress struggle to find a way to lower the budget deficit and to raise the debt ceiling before we default on our debt for the first time in history, I hope this new report on the perilous state of millions of our children will deter them from further cuts in essential food, health, education, and other supports children need. And I hope they will remember that children did not cause the budget deficit and hurting them will not solve it. They need to address the unjust federal tax benefits enjoyed by the wealthiest corporations and individuals, some of whom pay not a penny in taxes and enjoy tax rates lower than working families whose modest incomes do not allow them to make ends meet. We know that poverty impairs children’s emotional, intellectual, and physical development and ends up costing our nation billions of dollars in lost productivity and increased health care costs. We know how to give children a healthy start, rescue them from the wolf of hunger, and keep them well-nourished. We know how to give children a head start to help them get ready for and be better able to achieve in school. We know how to provide children a quality education. Yet how pound foolish to cut early childhood programs, school days, recess, and teachers they need to succeed.

and then wondering why everyone is an addict. Easy to ignore, the obesity epidemic is often reduced to ridicule in a congress divided over issues like war and unemployment. But this is a crucial juncture, when the conver-
gence of government programs, spending and corporate lobbying is colliding in a way that will impact everyone in America. What we eat is harming our bodies and our budget. There aren’t any people profiting, only corporations.
By MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN The Children’s Defense Fund has just released a new report, The State of America’s Children 2011, which paints a disturbing portrait of child needs across our country. With rampant unemployment, housing foreclosures, homelessness, hunger, and massive looming federal and state budget cuts, children’s well-being is in great jeopardy. One in five children is poor and children are our nation’s poorest age group. Child poverty increased almost 10 percent between 2008 and 2009, the largest single year increase since data were first collected. Fifteen and a half million children are adrift in a sea of poverty, and every 32 seconds another child is born poor. As our country struggles to climb out of the recession millions of our children are falling further behind. Although there are more poor white than poor Black or Latino children, worsening income inequality and continuing racial disparities have an extra harsh combined impact on poor children of color. Many are pushed off the path of healthy development and into the Cradle to Prison Pipeline. Poor children are more likely to live in fragile families, lag in early childhood development, suffer abuse and neglect, be uninsured and in poor health, be denied a quality education, and experience other gaps that put them far behind non-poor peers. Millions of Black children are facing one of the
Continued from page 4 stamp purchases. A recent New York Times article, “Soft Drink Industry Fights Proposed Food Stamp Ban,” states that the non-profit Feeding America, an “antihunger” group, opposes Bloomberg’s plan. Feeding America is actually governed by a board of directors composed of executives from companies including Kraft, ConAgra, Mars, Inc., and General Mills - companies whose unhealthy products are composed mainly of the ingredients Bloomberg is determined to eliminate from eligibility for food stamps. Federal Subsidies Help Unhealthy Ingredients The flagship products of these corporations receive billions in federal subsidies to keep costs artificially low and the products on every shelf. Unhealthy food isn’t cheaper because it’s less nutrient-dense; it’s cheaper because the government subsidizes its production — and that’s something many Americans simply don’t know about. The Environmental Working Group reports that the federal gov-
ernment subsidized $261.9 billion dollars between 1995-2010, with the majority of the money going to a select few producers of crops like corn, wheat and soybeans. Other major recipients include the meat and dairy industries. Fruits and vegetables, by comparison, receive 0.37% of subsidies, despite federal nutrition recommendations advocating that one-third of daily food intake be fruits and vegetables. In 2010, the USDA spent $64.7 billion dollars on food stamps. The same year, the USDA also gave $15 billion dollars in farm subsidies, including $1.7 billion to corn crops, which manufacture the main ingredient in soda — one of the most unhealthy items on many Americans’ daily menus. At a time when food prices are rising rapidly and health is declining, the federal government is giving money to continue producing products that contribute to illness and obesity, while simultaneously giving people the means to buy these products. It is as if the government is making the drugs, giving them away,
We know how to prevent child abuse and neglect, find permanent families for children in foster care, and keep children out of our costly and ineffective juvenile justice system. How foolish to cut the investments that could keep children out of trouble and of jail. To paraphrase what our mothers and grandmothers taught us, if you know better, you should do better. What is it going to take to get our leaders to get it? Our vulnerable children must not be sacrificial lambs on the altar of adult politics. As CDF’s faith allies gather at the Annual Samuel DeWitt Proctor Institute for Child Advocacy Ministry at CDF-Haley Farm, the urgency of resisting misguided budget choices is reflected in our theme this year, “Justice, Justice Shall You Pursue: Answering God’s Call to Protect Children.” Every person of faith should revisit the prophets and the gospels and the tenets of all great faiths that require us as individuals, congregations, and communities to answer God’s call to nurture and protect all children. I hope our public officials will think hard, too, about what they value and whether their choices will contribute towards a more or less unified and just nation for all.

Lawmakers work on debt Plan B as deadline looms By DEBORAH CHARLES and THOMAS FERRARO WASHINGTON — With five days to go before President Barack Obama’s deadline for a debt ceiling deal and no agreement in sight, Republicans and Democrats yesterday were crafting a fallback plan to avert a default. Both parties agree on the need to raise the debt ceiling, which caps how much the United States can borrow, but are deeply divided along ideological lines over how to do it. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, however, remained optimistic that a deal was possible. “Despite what you hear, people are moving closer together,” Geithner, who met with top House of Representatives Republicans on Friday, told CNBC television. “You have seen the leadership of the Republican Party ... take default off the table. That’s encouraging.” But the stalemate in Washington, along with debt problems in Europe, is unnerving financial markets worldwide amid fears that they could spiral into a global crisis. World stocks dipped and gold prices hit record highs above $1,600 an ounce as ner-
vous investors sought a safe haven. “There’s a perfect storm happening on a global macroeconomic basis with no debt deal here and the ongoing issues in Europe, and the market is looking at all these things and is fairly anxious,” said Oliver Pursche, president of Gary Goldberg Financial Services in Suffern, New York. The top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, has submitted a plan that would essentially give Obama the power to raise the debt limit and take the political heat off Republicans. Senate leader Harry Reid hopes to begin debate on a modified version in the Democratic-led Senate this week. McConnell’s complicated plan to increase the debt limit in three stages has moved to the forefront as efforts to reach a comprehensive deficit-reduction deal have hit a wall. Democrats and Republicans — with an eye on 2012 elections — are digging deeper into entrenched positions on taxes and entitlement programs such as Social Security and the Medicare healthcare program for the elderly. Democrats want tax increases to be part of any final deficit reduction deal. Republicans say that would hurt a
sputtering economic recovery and have taken aim at entitlement programs that Democrats have vowed to protect. McConnell’s plan, initially presented last week as a fallback option, is gaining traction as a viable solution in part because it would allow Republicans to avoid having to take a politically toxic vote on raising the debt limit. Democratic aides said Reid and McConnell’s staff were still trying to work out details of the plan, including spending cuts of about $1.5 trillion. “The plan is still tenuous. We don’t have the details yet. Everything is extremely fluid,” a Democratic aide said. The Senate, where Democrats have a majority, is expected to approve the final fallback plan but it is uncertain if the Republican-led House will go along. “We (the Senate) are going to throw it to them (House Republicans) and see what happens,” a Democratic aide said. Democratic aides note that last week House Speaker John Boehner, the top U.S. Republican, declined to rule the McConnell plan in or out. Obama had set a Friday deadline for Congressional leaders from both parties to agree on a deal to raise the country’s debt ceiling. He said the July 22 deadline would give Congress enough leeway to write and pass legislation before August 2, when the government will run out of money to pay its bills. Failure to increase the debt ceiling by then could send shockwaves through global financial markets and plunge the United States into another
recession. Credit rating agencies have signaled they may cut the top-notch AAA U.S. rating if the borrowing limit is not raised and deficit reduction measures are not laid out. Fitch Ratings said yesterday if the debt ceiling is not raised before August 2 it would place the AAA rating on “watch negative,” which means it could downgrade it within a threeto-six-month period. This echoed similar warnings from the other two big rating agencies, Moody’s and S&P, last week. Obama held White House talks with congressional leaders for five straight days last week. But no White House talks were listed on Obama’s official schedule for Monday. Senior Democratic aides said the Senate will likely begin considering the McConnell-initiated measure after “show votes” on a Republican balanced budget amendment as well as a Republican “cut, cap and balance” bill. Boehner has scheduled a vote for today on his “cut, cap and balance” plan, which would condition an increase in the debt limit on passage of a constitutional amendment to require the federal government to balance its books each year. That bill stands little chance of passing the Senate but it might buy some goodwill with conservatives to eventually allow for passage of a compromise, such as the McConnell plan. “If by Friday there is no meaningful agreement on Plan B and the parties remain far apart, the greenback could see panic selling as fears of possible technical default grip the market,” said Boris Schlossberg, director of currency research at GFT in New York.
Police: Ex-cop ordered hit on girlfriend
From left: Devin Bickham Sr., Devin Bickham Jr., Cardell Taylor MAYWOOD, Ill. — Cook County Judge William Weiss has ordered a former North Chicago police officer, his son and another man held in the death of the ex-officer’s girlfriend. Weiss Friday ordered Devin A. Bickham, 39, his son, also named Devin Bickham, 20, both of Blue Island, and Cardell Taylor, 35, of Chicago held without bail in the death of Bickham’s girlfriend, Chevron Alexander, The Chicago Sun-Times reported. Assistant State’s Attorney Maureen O’Brien said the elder Bickham, through his son, hired Taylor to kill
Alexander. Investigators said she had been pressuring him to divorce his wife so they could marry. Prosecutors said Bickham was to pay Taylor $400 for killing Alexander, 29. and the younger Bickham and Taylor allegedly confessed. Investigators said Bickham lured Alexander to a River Forest parking lot about 10 p.m. Monday, ostensibly to talk about their relationship. Another car pulled up and a gunman got out and shot Alexander three times. Prosecutors identified the gunman as Taylor and Bickham’s son as the car’s driver.

Sao Tome presidential vote set for run-off By ABEL VEIGA Sao Tome and Principe’s former strongman Manuel Pinto da Costa will face the African island nation’s speaker in a presidential run-off, the electoral body announced yesterday. According to provisional results, the man who ruled the archipelago with an iron fist for 15 years after its 1975 independence from Portugal led the field in Sunday’s poll with 35.85 percent of the vote. Speaker Evaristo Carvalho was second with 21.82 percent and will challenge the 73year-old former president on July 24. The electoral commission confirmed the trend announced earlier by state radio and said that while tallying
was still ongoing, the ballots already counted were enough to ascertain the order would not change. Pinto da Costa, who was the pre-poll favourite, played a crucial role in the quest for the tiny, impoverished west African archipelago’s independence from Portugal. After independence was achieved in 1975, Pinto da Costa led the country until 1990, ruling it as a communist one-party state. Since stepping down in 1990, Pinto da Costa has twice failed to get elected and ran in Sunday’s poll as an independent candidate. The archipelago’s residents are anxious for stability in a country that has seen 18 different prime ministers since the return of multi-partyism two decades ago and has been plagued by corruption. Thousands rally for Zimbabwe drops charges against energy minister democracy in Morocco Thousands of demonstrators, including Islamists, held peaceful rallies in Rabat, Casablanca and Tangiers Sunday to demand greater political reforms and social justice in Morocco. The latest protests were organised by the youth-based February 20 Movement behind months of demonstrations calling for reforms in the Arab world’s oldest reigning monarchy. In Casablanca’s Sidi Othmane suburb, several thousand protesters shouted slogans to demand “a democratic constitution” and “greater social justice”, AFP reporters witnessed. Militants of the Islamist Justice and Charity Group, banned but tolerated by the government, were among the group. Hundreds of pro-government protesters also gathered in Sidi Othmane, waving flags and portraits of King Mohammed VI, chanting: “Long live the King” and singing the antional anthem. The two groups were kept apart by the security forces, out in large numbers. At the same time, more than 1,000 protesters gathered in the capital Rabat and several thousand in Tangiers. The protests are inspired by similar movements that have toppled regimes in Tunisia and Egypt and by popular uprisings elsewhere in the Arab world. They continue despite a referendum in which 98 percent of voters approved reforms proposed by the king, but boycotted by the February 20 Movement, which curbs the monarch’s nearabsolute powers.
HARARE, Zimbabwe Zimbabwe state prosecutors say they have withdrawn corruption charges against the country’s energy minister. Minister Elton Mangoma, a founder of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s former
opposition party, was arrested in March over allegations that he interfered in a deal to buy equipment for the state electricity company. Mangoma was also acquitted last month over allegations that he bypassed governmental procedures by buying gasoline from a South African firm in January.
He spent a week in jail after the second arrest. State prosecutor Christopher Mutangadura said yesterday the state’s only option was to drop the similar charges after Mangoma’s first acquittal on lack of evidence. Tsvangirai’s party cited both cases as intimidation against its ministers and officials.
Gabon troops to be backbone of French W. Africa forces: PM LIBREVILLE, Gabon French Prime Minister Francois Fillon told his country’s troops in Gabon on Sunday that they will form the backbone of Paris’ forces in its former colonies in west Africa. Under a new defence plan for west Africa that is seeing France renegotiate agreements with a number of ex-colonies, the role of the French base in Gabon will be “reinforced” to form the “essential part” of the country’s forces in the region, Fillon said during a visit to Gabon. The base will be “at the heart” of a rapid-reaction force, said Fillon, who was visiting Camp de Gaulle in Libreville, where about
900 French soldiers are based. “France’s military presence on the continent has often been, in
the past, the target of suspicions that have weighed on our image,” said Fillon.

Under-fire Egypt PM delays swearing-in of new cabinet By SAMER ALATRUSH Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf yesterday postponed the swearing-in of a new cabinet intended to deflect anger over the pace of reform as protesters said the shakeup did not go far enough. Sharaf, who heads a caretaker government after a revolt toppled strongman Hosni Mubarak in February, had hoped the sweeping reshuffle would persuade the protesters to end a 10day-old sit-in at Cairo’s iconic Tahrir Square. But the protesters complained that the new cabinet retains ministers they wanted sacked, including Justice Minister Abdel Aziz al-Gindi, whom they accuse of delaying trials of former regime officials, including Mubarak. Mubarak, who was forced to resign as president after a nationwide revolt, was said by his lawyer on Sunday to have slipped into a coma in a Red Sea resort hospital where he has been under arrest since April. But hospital officials in Sharm el-Sheikh denied the 83year-old former leader, who is receiving treatment for a heart condition, was in a coma. Mubarak and his two sons face murder and corruption charges and their trial is scheduled for August 3. A hospital official told the state-run MENA news agency that Mubarak’s health was “stable” yesterday. Fourteen new ministers and a deputy premier had been expected to take their oaths office
before Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads the ruling military, but state television announced that the ceremony had been postponed until Tuesday. “The government of Sharaf will take the constitutional oath tomorrow (Tuesday) to allow for the completion of negotiations,” state-run Nile Television reported. The new cabinet will include former World Bank official Mohammed Kamel Amr as foreign minister and veteran economist Hazem Beblawi, who will serve as finance minister as well as deputy premier for economic affairs. The shakeup removed the controversial and powerful antiquities minister Zahi Hawass, who was credited abroad with reviving interest in Egyptian antiquity sites but criticised at home for his close ties with the Mubaraks. His announced replacement, Abdel Fatah Banna, has already come under fire from antiquities officials and Sharaf was reconsidering, MENA reported. Sharaf also appointed a leading member of the liberal Wafd Party, Ali al-Silmi as his second deputy on political affairs. Thirteen ministers from the previous cabinet, appointed in March after mass protests to replace Mubarak’s last government, retained their posts, including Interior Minister Mansur Essawy, whose resignation the protesters had demanded. “We want a change of all the government,” said Sharif Ali, a member of the April 6 youth group that helped organise the 18-day revolt that ended Mubarak’s three-decade rule. Ali, who said he and other
protesters in Tahrir Square had no intention of leaving, insisted that other demands — such as the speedy trials of Mubarak and police officers implicated in protester killings during the revolt — had yet to be met. In Alexandria, protesters staging a sit-in in Saed Zaghlul square rejected the ministerial changes and called for a mass for Friday, demonstration MENA reported. Dozens of protesters in the canal city of Suez also refused to end their sit-in, an AFP correspondent reported. While some of the new ministers were known to activists, with several said to have joined protesters in Tahrir during the revolt, others had little recognition before their appointment. “Nobody knows some of these names,” said another activist, Bola Abdu. The sit-in at the square, the epicentre of the revolt that overthrew Mubarak, began after tens of thousands of people held a demonstration on July 8 calling for speedier reforms. The protesters risk the enmity of other Egyptians who want the square vacated, accusing the demonstrators of slowing down the country’s economic recovery. Fundamentalist Islamist groups have called for a large demonstration on Friday to demand “stability,” Egyptian newspapers reported, but the leading Islamist movement the Muslim Brotherhood said it would not take part. Egypt has seen a sharp decline in tourism and increased unemployment since the revolt, and investors remain jittery over sporadic and at times deadly unrest in the Arab world’s most populous country.
UN makes first aid airlift to rebel-held Somali region The United Nations has made its first aid delivery to a rebel-held Somalia region after the insurgents lifted a ban on the operations of foreign aid agencies, a spokeswoman told AFP on Sunday. The UN children agency airlifted five metric tonnes of food and medicines for malnourished children to Baidoa, a town in central Somalia under the control of the Al Qaeda-
inspired Shebab rebels. “It was successful and it was a good step towards airlifting supplies into Somalia. It is the first in two years,” said Iman Morooka, the UNICEF spokeswoman for Somalia. Morooka said the Shebab “have given approval and gave unhindered access, and it was smooth operation”. The delivery was made last Wednesday
and UNICEF said it was ready to take more supplies to southern and central regions of Somalia controlled by the hardline rebels. The Shebab on July 6 appealed for help for thousands of people devastated by a severe drought that has hit the Horn of Africa region, saying they would allow aid through to their fiefdoms. Two years ago, the
Shebab expelled foreign aid groups, accusing them of being Western spies and Christian crusaders, and imposed draconian rules on the operations of relief groups. Last week, the World Food Programme, which pulled out from southern Somalia in early 2010, said it was considering resuming operations in the area.

f Greek oil tanker hijacked off Nigerian coast Armed men hijacked a Greek oil tanker off the coast of Nigeria at the weekend and took the 20 crew-members hostage, Greek port police told AFP yesterday. “We learned yesterday that the oil tanker ‘Aegean Star’ belonging to the Endeavour Marine Agency company and flying a Liberian flag was hijacked Saturday, 30 nautical miles off the coast of Nigeria,” a port authority press official said. “For the moment, we don’t have information on the condition of the crew,” he added. The ship had set off from Ghana and was headed towards Benin, the same source said. The 20-person crew included three Greek nationals, including the ship’s captain, authorities said. On Africa’s opposite coast, pirates based in wartorn Somalia have become infamous for seizing ships in the Gulf of Aden and beyond, often demanding large ransoms in exchange for the release of the crew. A Greek-flagged oil-laden supertanker was seized off the coast of Oman by Somali pirates in February. The vessel and crew were released in April, although the company involved did not disclose if a ransom was paid.
‘Blade Runner’ Pistorius suffers new world blow South Africa’s ‘Blade Runner’ Oscar Pistorius on Sunday failed in his latest attempt to register a qualifying time for the 400m at next month’s world championships. The 24-year-old was third in a time of 46.65sec, still outside the 45.25sec time that he needs to compete in the championships in Daegu, South Korea in August. Jamaica’s Lansford Spence won the race in 46.34, with Martyn Rooney of Great Britain taking second spot in 46.36. Pistorius, who has a best time in the 400m of 45.61sec, now has one more chance, in Lignano on Tuesday, to break the qualifying barrier. The South African, who had both lower legs amputated when he was 11 months old, has captured four Paralympic gold medals but since 2008 has been cleared to run in able-bodied races using his artificial legs: springy, lightweight, J-shaped limbs called “Cheetahs”. Resumption of rail transportation in Jamaica could cost US$300m, says minister By DOUGLAS MCINTOSH KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Transport and Works, Mike Henry, says the Cabinet will be updated on the level of investor interest in Jamaica’s railway service, within the next 30 days. Speaking with journalists during a tour of the Spanish Town railway station last Thursday, Henry said that close to US$300 million is needed to fully restore the service. “What we are saying (to investors) is the railway is viable. Invest your money with your expertise and look at it, and expand the outreach of the railway. I will wait on Cabinet to decide on (how we treat with the matter, a deci-
sion) will be taken in the next 30 days or so,” he said. Henry noted several income generating “elements of value” capable of enabling the rail service to operate profitably. They include: passenger and cargo service; data transfer, with cables being laid to facilitate communications capabilities; and heritage/tourism attractions. He said the Jamaica Railway Corporation (JRC) is focusing on resuming the passenger service. The resumption commenced July 4, with a trial run between Spanish Town and Linstead, St Catherine, following the closure of the Bog Walk Gorge. It marked the first time the JRC had operated in 19 years. Explaining the rationale for resuming at this time, Henry said that he “embraced the
opportunity” offered by the closure of the Gorge to conduct the trial run, and assess the public’s response to the service. He said that an assessment of the fiveday period ending July 14, and excluding the weekends when the service is not operated, showed that that nearly $2 million in revenue was generated from upwards of 2,000 passengers commuting daily. Asked to how much it will cost to operate the service over the 30day period, JRC chairman, Barry Bonitto, said the figure is still being worked out. However, Henry indicated that the figure was well above “breakeven point”, and assured that the income is covering the cost of operating between Spanish Town and Linstead. Chavez returns to Cuba for medical treatment HAVANA, Cuba — Venezuela´s President Hugo Chavez has returned to Havana to undergo a second stage of his cancer treatment, which involves chemotherapy sessions. The decision to return to Havana contradicts recent media reports that he would be treated in Brazil. President Dilma Rousseff had offered Chavez help with his cancer treatment, which he appreciated and said he would consider. But finally, the Venezuelan head of state decided to return to Cuba, where he underwent surgery twice: first on June 10 to remove a pelvic abscess and on June 20 to remove a tumour. Chavez requested permission from the Venezuelan Parliament to be out of the country in a letter addressed to Parliament president Fernando Soto Rojas, in which he explained that he must now continue to meet the medical plan designed by his team of doctors, and this fact “leads me to request once again your supportive mediation at the plenary session of parliament so that according to what is stipulated by the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (...) I can be granted legislative authorization to be out of national territory as of Saturday, July 16 to keep with the necessary treatment in Havana, Cuba for my full health recovery.”
score political points, the subsequent stories released by the Caribbean Media Corporation - ostensibly in reaction to that comment by Dr Mitchell were inaccurate, unfortunate and troubling,” the statement said. The Caribbean Media Corporation’s report suggested that MWAG had sat idly by while their veteran colleague was jailed for defamation. “But CMC’s initial story on the matter and its subsequent retraction are riddled with inaccuracies and assumptions that lack context,” MWAG said. The Association explained that, based on its research immediately following the jailing of Pierre last week, it was satisfied that the development was in no way related to a freedom-of-the media issue, or any attempt to intim-
idate and silence him as a journalist or commentator. “As unfortunate and saddening as the development was, we were left in no doubt that the matter was a personal tragedy on many fronts, and our role was then to give private moral support to a colleague and friend, because of his long standing,” MWAG said. An investigation had revealed that Pierre had owed the court a sum of money for services rendered on a long outstanding matter, and had failed to pay. As a result, through a court-ordered bench warrant on July 6, he was arrested and brought to court to answer directly on his failure to pay. During the hearing, Pierre got upset and used expletives and was generally seen to be uncooperative. The
judge in the matter, deeming his behaviour disrespectful then slapped him with a contempt of court charge and ordered him arrested. The contempt of court arose from his remarks to the judge during the sitting, and as a result of refusing to agree for an arrangement to make the already outstanding payment. He was taken to Richmond Hill Prison and remained there for two hours before he was released shortly afterwards when a Good Samaritan paid the court the outstanding fine. The judge also immediately rescinded the contempt of court charge after presentation was made on his behalf to show that Pierre, who is diabetic with a heart condition, was ailing.

strategies of the Force; the identification and apprehension of whitecollar criminals; sexual offender surveillance; and the identification and apprehension of criminal gangs members, all of which he has mastered during his career over the past two decades and which will be critical to addressing the current realities in the Federation. He is also someone who will have a natural identification with, and
C.G. Walwyn respect for, the men and women whom he has been named to lead as the next ‘top cop’.

As much as $5 billion missing from Turks Puerto Rican duo and Caicos treasury, says British minister Calle 13 censored in Dominican Republic
PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands — According to Britain’s minister responsible for the O v e r s e a s Territories, Henry Bellingham, as much as $5 billion has gone missing from the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) treasury as a result of the previous elected government undervaluing land sold during that period. On Thursday, Bellingham, who is currently visiting the TCI convened a press conference and delivered a comprehensive formal speech. In response to media
questions, Bellingham said that, according to Jon Llewellyn, who was sent to the TCI as a land adviser, between $2.5 and $5 billion has gone missing from the TCI treasury as a result of the government led by former premier Michael Misick undervaluing land that was sold during that period. Bellingham went further, saying that if the actual value of the land sold had reached the treasury it could have been invested in infrastructure to serve the peoples of the islands. Clayton Greene, the current leader of Misick’s Progressive National Party (PNP), has reacted to this statement, admitting that there was much wrongdoing in the previous administration but that
he does not believe the treasury was “raided” to this extent. However, Greene, an attorney at law and the Speaker of the House during the last government, reportedly represented a buyer who purchased 2,500 acres of Crown land for only $15 million. The land located on Middle Caicos has been conservatively appraised to be worth at least $250 million. Greene went on to say that the PNP had a policy of making sure that belongers were part of every development. In the Middle Caicos land deal, which was kept under wraps until revealed by the media, 15 supporters of the PNP government were reportedly given small parcels of the land.
However, when the special investigation and prosecution team (SIPT) interviewed these individuals, several denied knowledge that they had applied for the land or were aware they were participants in the deal. In one case, a source said a North Caicos resident was paid $25,000 for signing his name. Of the low $15 million selling price, it appears that only $7.5 million actually reached the treasury, with the balance due on February 11 of this year. However, the developer making the purchase has been in financial difficulties, losing his Miami office building in a recent foreclosure action. SIPT is reportedly now closing in on a similar land scam in South Caicos.
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — The Dominican Republic’s Public Shows Commission has banned 22 songs from being aired on radio and television or performed in public areas. Of that number, nine songs are part of the repertoire of the renowned Puerto Rican duo Calle 13. The commission, under the Culture Ministry, issued a resolution explaining that the lyrics of the censored songs were submitted to analysis following the request of several organizations and foundations fighting violence, mistreatment of women and minors. The songs analyzed “spread negative messages” for minors, said the commission, which did not explain the specific sanctions on those who broadcast those tunes. The Calle 13 songs that were banned from broadcasting include “Vamo´a portarnos mal,” “Fiesta de locos,” “La madre de los enanos” and “Se vale to-to.” The most recent concert in Santo Domingo last January 20 by Calle 13 was attended by some 5 000 fans, who filled all facilities at the Sans Souci Port. On that occasion, the famous duo performed the songs that have just been censored.

One Thought - One Humanity
For the conclusions of these stories check out the July 14th - July 20th, 2011 issue of The New American, which hits newsstands every Thursday For the past several years Crystal Nicole has been working behind the scenes penning songs for Beyonce, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Brandy, Monica and others. Now with a brand new record deal, the Atlanta native is following the same successful path as Ne-Yo and Keri Hilson transitioning from songwriter to artist. Eariler this year, Crystal Nicole won a Grammy Award for writing Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World)” featured on the ‘Loud’ album. After learning the business and working with award winning artists and producers, Crystal Nicole moves into the spotlight with the release of her first single “Pinch Me.” With the launch of her artist career she is using her voice to talk about the importance of having a “voice against domestic violence.” The plot between Bow Wow and the mother of his child, video model Joie Chavis, thickens as more drama is revealed to the world. According to TMZ, Joie decided to exclude Bow Wow’s name from the birth certificate of their child, Shai, since he did not show up to the hospital during the birth of their daughter after Joie had to undergo an emergency c-section back in April. In fact, it is reported that Bow Wow didn’t show up until six days after the baby was born! Joie is also stating that Bow Wow is a fake, and is acting like he’s a devoted dad from the open letter he wrote to his fans earlier this week but was absent during their daughter’s birth. Although she obvisouly seems to have ill feelings toward the rapper, it’s reported that Joie is willing to move on and let the courts name Bow Wow as baby Shai’s father,
legally, although that will be up to the discretion of the judge. American Idol alum Jordin Sparks, who is currently touring with the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block, says she feels “lucky” that she continues to find success in her career. The 21year-old tells Parade, “”I just feel lucky that five years later I’m still touring and people still want to talk to me. For me, I just keep going and say yes to things that I think are going to be really important.” Sparks also says having a good foundation and picking the right songs has helped her longevity. “I don’t want to get bogged down saying yes to things just because I can,” she says. “I want it to mean something. Trying to keep your head on straight and having a good foundation and base back at home and around you is key.” Five classic albums created by Tupac Shakur are being rereleased digitally for the first time ever, representatives for the late rapper’s family confirmed. Tupac’s first three solo albums are being made available digitally for sale on iTunes for the first time. The albums that are being re-released include 2Pacalypse Now, which produced the singles “Brenda’s Got A Baby” and “Trapped.” His second album, Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z., will also be digitally rereleased. That album produced the singles “Holler If You Hear Me” and one of Tupac’s best-known songs, “I Get Around.” Other albums hitting the Internet for the first time include Thug Life - Volume 1, Me Against The World and R U Still Down?. In related news, Tupac’s Greatest Hits album has official-
ly been certified Diamond by the RIAA, having sold over 10 million copies since its original release on November 24, 1998. Michelle Williams is making a musical comeback with her new song “Love Gun.” Much like her Destiny’s Child counterpart Kelly Rowland, Michelle has gone the techno-pop route on this tune. It’s been three years since her last solo album was released and “Love Gun” is quite different from it’s preceding material. With heavy synths and Casio keyboard-striking, the upbeat record is for the lucky in love. “My album will be ‘inspirational pop.’ Think of Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ or Natasha Bedingfeld’s ‘Unwritten.’ I want to give people a message of hope while at the same time get them moving with dance inspired tracks.” Andre 3000 was originally tapped to play Jimi Hendrix in a biopic last year, but it’s been silent on the news front since. But according to actress Hayley Atwell, the Outkast member is still slated to be in the flick. Speaking with Esquire, the Captain America star explained that Three Stacks is signed on to appear as Hendrix in the independent flick. “Next up is possibly a Jimi Hendrix biopic — an independent film with Andre 3000 from OutKast playing Jimi Hendrix. But I don’t know, really. The Atwell team is like, Let’s just wait and see,” she said. Andre previously appeared in the 2008 flick Semi-Pro, though has relatively quiet since then. He is supposedly working on a solo album to be released this year in anticipation of an Outkast LP to drop in 2012.

Patients worse off with more-experienced docs? By ERIC SCHULTZ In a study that flies in the face of common sense, sicker patients turned out to fare worse under the care of seasoned doctors than when newcomers to medicine looked after them. According to findings in the American Journal of Medicine, patients whose doctors had practiced for at least 20 years stayed longer in the hospital and were more likely to die compared to those whose doctors got their medical license in the past five years. The results highlight “issues that we have as a medical profession in keeping up to date” with the latest medical knowledge, said Dr. Niteesh Choudhry of Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the new study. It is “a quality of care problem that has been recognized for five to 10 years,” he told Reuters Health. Dr. William Southern and colleagues looked at records of more than 6,500 patients who’d been hospitalized between 2002 and 2004 at New York City’s Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. Montefiore is a teaching hospital where patients are first seen by a junior doctor who randomly assigns them to one of the hospital’s six medical teams. Each team
has a medical student, recent medical school graduates, and at the top, a senior doctor known as the attending physician. Over the course of the study, there were 59 different attending physicians. The researchers divided them up based on how long they were practicing: five years or less, six to 10 years, 11 to 20 years, or more than 20 years. the Because researchers thought doctors might behave differently with their own long-time patients, they confined the study to cases in which patient and doctor had never met before. In comparing the most and least experienced doctors, researchers saw the most-experienced group had more patients die in the hospital. At first glance, compared to patients with the newest doctors, those with the most experienced physicians had more than a 70 percent increase in their odds of dying in the hospital and a 50 percent increase in their odds of dying within 30 days. However, when the researchers took into account how sick the
patients were, they found that only the sicker patients — those with complicated medical problems — were at higher risk in the hands of the more experienced doctors. Southern’s group also found that while the doctor’s experience played a role in how long patients stayed in the hospital, it also mattered how many hospitalized patients he or she was taking care of. When doctors weren’t very busy, they kept patients in the hospital for roughly the same average time no matter how many years of experience they had. But when they did have a lot of patients
to see in the hospital, those with more than 20 years of experience kept patients there about half a day longer than their peers who’d been practicing for less than five years. Previous research has found similar results across a variety of physician specialties. Earlier studies have also shown that physicians with more time in practice are less likely to adhere to practice guidelines. “It’s not quite as simple to say that as you get further away from training, your quality gets worse,” cautioned Choudhry. The problem, he said, is not with the capability of the more experienced doctors, but rather, their familiarity with more current guidelines and practices. The results suggest the need to rethink the way doctors are continually educated in the years after completing their certification, he added. The authors suggest that physicians with more than 20 years in practice be required to recertify periodically. Most of the older doctors in the current study are presently exempt from having to take recertification tests, they say. Most doctors do participate in “continuing medical
education” programs after they finish their training. But much of it is passive, consisting mostly of attending lectures and reading articles by medical researchers. While these are important ways of learning new findings, said Choudhry, it would be better to develop educational programs that would actively engage the more experienced physicians. Dr. Steven Weinberger, executive vice president and CEO of the American College of Physicians, cautioned that it is premature to make drastic changes based on the results of the study, which only looked at small numbers of attending physicians. He also came up with several alternative explanations for the findings. For instance, the fact that patients were in a teaching hospital might have contributed to the different rates of death, since more experienced doctors might give the doctors-in-training more autonomy. And the different lengths of time patients stayed in the hospital could reflect a cultural difference in today’s younger physicians, who are taught to focus on reducing hospital stays. Despite his concerns about the study, Weinberger agreed, “It is important for physicians to stay as current as possible.”
Although Hispanics tend to have lower self-esteem than Blacks or whites in the teen years, by age 30 their self-esteem has increased to the point that they have higher self-esteem than whites, a new study suggests. And in both adolescence and young adulthood, Blacks have higher selfesteem than whites. By age 30, whites trailed both Hispanics and Blacks in terms of self-esteem, according to the report published online July 4 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland made this finding after analyzing U.S. survey data of more than 7,000 young adults from 1994 to 2008. The participants ranged in age from 14 to 30 years. Over the course of 14 years, the study authors examined
how five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism) affected the youth’s selfesteem. In addition, the researchers also looked at the participants’ sense of life mastery, risk-taking tendencies, gender, ethnicity, health and income. “We tested for factors that we thought would have an impact on how self-esteem develops,” the study’s lead author, Ruth Yasemin Erol, said in news release from the American Psychological Association. “Understanding the trajectory of selfesteem is important to pinpointing and timing interventions that could improve people’s self-esteem.” The researchers found that conscientiousness, emotional stability, a feeling of mastery and being extraverted are key to pre-
dicting the direction a person’s self-esteem will take as they grow up, and that income did not affect this course. These findings, they pointed out, could assist health professionals in targeting treatments. And, contrary to popular belief, there are no significant differences in the way men and women feel about themselves during those periods of development, the investigators found. “The converging evidence on gender similarity in selfesteem is important because false beliefs in gender differences in self-esteem may carry substantial costs,” said Erol. “For example, parents, teachers and counselors may overlook selfesteem problems in male adolescents and young men because of the widespread belief that men have higher self-esteem than women have.”
Experts: Keep sun safety Self-esteem levels vary by age, race in mind this summer As you enjoy outdoor activities this summer, don’t forget to keep sun safety in mind. The sun on your skin may feel nice, but it brings certain risks. For example, people who had just one major sunburn when they were a child or teen have more than double the risk of developing melanoma, the most dangerous kind of skin cancer, later in life, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Dermatologists at the University of Michigan Health System offer the following tips: Try to avoid being in the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you do go out, try to stay in shade and wear protective clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
Use a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher with ingredients that protect against both UVB and UVA. It takes about one ounce (a shot glass) worth of sunscreen to cover exposed areas of the body. Don’t forget to cover your ears, nose and tops of your feet. Apply a sunscreen lip balm. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before exposure to the sun. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or more often if you’re swimming, sweating or have toweled off. Don’t use sunscreen on babies aged 6 months or younger. Keep them out of direct sunlight and cover them with protective clothing and hats. Shade them with umbrellas or carrier/stroller covers.

Trenton school district to expand its bilingual education program By MATT FAIR TRENTON According to new figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, the city’s Latino population grew by more than 50 percent over the last decade, swelling to nearly 29,000. The change is apparent not only in many of the city’s neighborhoods, but also in the Trenton Public School District, where educators are working to keep up with the increasing numbers by expanding its bilingual education program. With a three-year plan released to the public earlier this month and due to be approved by the Board of Education soon, officials in the district’s office of curriculum, instruction and assessment say they are instituting initiatives that will not only provide more bilingual programs but also train general education teachers how to work with students whose native language is not English. “We have seen a big increase and that’s why we’re trying to provide them with the services they need,” said Mildred Miranda,
supervisor of the district’s ESL (English as a second language) program. “We’re trying to train the teachers in sheltered instruction, which equips teachers with strategies and techniques to help English-language learners.” According to the district’s three-year plan, a requirement under state Department of Education regulations, there were 1,034 Spanish-speaking students enrolled in fulltime, bilingual programs in the district this year. An additional 279 took other highintensity or part-time ESL courses. Miranda said the number has grown slowly over the last decade, and bilingual programs have expanded to 13 out of 21 schools in the district. She said the number of full-time bilingual cen-
ters in the district has doubled from four to eight. The district hired nine new bilingual teachers last year to help meet demand and created an additional six spots going into the 2011-2012 school year, she said. And while she said it was important to provide enough full-time bilingual slots for young students who have little other exposure to English, she added that it was equally important to ensure that non-native English speakers who are proficient in the language, if not completely fluent, don’t fall behind when placed in the district’s general education program. Called “sheltered instruction,” the technique calls for training teachers in strategies that help make content more broadly accessible
to students who don’t have strong English skills. “We’re trying to train as many of the teachers as possible,” Miranda said. “So far, we’ve trained 178. We’re also conducting refresher courses during the summer.” The training is coupled with a program that sees ESL teachers placed in general education classrooms to help students who may be struggling to understand concepts being taught in English. The ESL instructors also work with the regular teachers to help develop lesson plans and curriculum. The new three-year plan, which would expire after 2014, also includes a parent advisory committee. The committee, which would include one parent from each school, is designed to help the district know what problems are occurring in the schools and to help the district provide guidance from above. While the Latino population may make up the largest portion of the non-English speakers, Miranda said the district also has a significant number of students who speak Karen, Burmese, and Haitian Creole. Some community activists say they would
like to see full-time bilingual programs for these students as well. “I want to see how many kids they’re going to provide bilingual education for and how they’re going to provide it for kids from different nationalities,” said Waldemar Ronquillo, president of the parent-teacher organization at the Woodrow Wilson and Martin Luther King Jr. schools. “If you put them for one hour a day in ESL classes, you’re wasting the kids’ time and the teachers’ time because they’re not going to learn, but if they’re there for eight hours a day, they’re going to learn English.” Miranda said state law mandates only that the district provide a full-time bilingual program if there are more than 20 students who speak a particular language in one school. Ronquillo also expressed concern that the ESL program’s administrative staff wasn’t large enough to efficiently deal with demand. Miranda, who until recently was the sole ESL administrator, said the district has hired one full-time parent liason to work with her and it expects to bring in a full-time compliance officer to make
sure that all state docurequirementation ments are being met. Overall, Ronquillo said he thought the plan was pointing the district in the right direction, but he doubted whether enough teachers would be available to meet the increasing demands of the Spanish-speaking population. “This plan, to me, sounds good, but we have to see how they’re going to implement it,” he said. “The Spanishspeaking population in Trenton is growing so fast, especially in the South Ward. There’s a lot of Guatemalans, Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. The kids need ESL but we can’t give it to them because they don’t have enough teachers.” Miranda said that not only is the district committed to meeting the demand but it is bound by state law to do so. When parents bring their children to the district to register for classes, she said, they’re required to take a language proficiency test if they do not speak English at home. Depending on the results of the test, she said, students are provided with the services they require.
N.J. leaders clash over bill that would decrease municipal oversight of apartment buildings TRENTON Landlords across New Jersey would reap significant financial savings and face much less scrutiny under a bill that would take municipalities out the business of inspecting apartment buildings. Supporters of the measure say it would eliminate redundancies and unnecessary costs, but municipal leaders contend that halting local inspections would provide a giveaway to landlords who wield influence in Trenton and leave tenants vulnerable to substandard conditions.
“This is a life-anddeath issue,” said Bill Bray, spokesman for the city of New Brunswick, which inspects its 12,000 rental units once every three years. “Having inspectors on the ground abating issues has saved lives.” Currently, the state inspects all apartment buildings with three or more units once every five years, and requires owners to register with the Department of Community Affairs. In addition, many cities like New Brunswick have established their own inspection programs by assessing landlords to help pay for inspec-
tors and increased oversight. City officials say the added vigilance is crucial to scrutinize absentee landlords and troublesome properties, which are often found in urban areas and can detract from the quality of life. The bill, which was approved by the state Senate and is expected to be taken up by the Assembly in the fall, would prevent municipalities from conducting routine inspections or charge for them, something that would become the sole domain of the state. “It’s redundant,” said state Senator Jeff Van Drew (D-Cape May), a sponsor of the bill. “It adds another
layer of bureaucracy that is not efficient and actually raises rents.” Van Drew said municipalities would still be able to respond to complaints, oversee construction projects, inspect apartments when there is a change in occupancy and conduct annual fire inspections. The changes would also provide significant savings for landlords. The state assesses a one-time registration fee of $10, while municipal registration fees are often assessed annually and range from $15 to $500 for each building and may include a separate bill for each unit. For inspections, the
state charges landlords on a sliding scale ranging from about $20 to a little more than $50 depending on the apartments a landlord owns. By comparison, local inspection fees range from $50 to $100 for each unit. “We believe local municipalities are using it to raise revenue,” said Conor Fennessy, vice president of governmental affairs at the New Jersey Apartment Association, which has lobbied feverishly for the bill. Fennessy said his organization wants to eliminate government redundancy while retaining a system that
is fair to landlords and tenants. Since last year, his organization has contributed more than $120,000 to the campaigns of important legislators and state party committees, according to reports filed with the New Jersey Election Law Commission. Of the $120, 000, the organization contributed $61,400 to the state committees, with the majority of the money going to Democrats who control the Legislature. It sent the other $59,005 to individual candidates, with the sponsors of the bill, including Van Drew, receiving the largest amounts.

Ameriie reveals album details, single due out this summer Since getting married to longtime love Lenny Nicholson, Ameriie has been busy working in the studio on her fifth album “Cymatika Vol 1.” The singer recently sat down with Billboard.com’s The Juice to talk about some exclusive details about the forthcoming project, including the sound, the subject matter, collaborations, and even some specific songs on the LP. The songstress reveals that she has been working with different producers, but she does have plans to work with Rich Harrison again. Two main producers she’s been working with closely on the project are Andre Harris (of Dre & Vidal) and Riley Urick. And as far as collaborations go, Ameriie is sticking close to her Korean roots. On working with Rich Harrison again … “We spoke about it not too long ago and I think we wanted to do something with this project. I went over it with him, what I was looking for in general, but we didn’t go too in depth because he’s been working a lot with his artists. I think that would be something a lot of people have been waiting for and something we’re ultimately going to do. It’s just a matter of when and in what way. We have great
energy. We’re going to have to have a block of time where we can sit and really create.” On collaborations … “I did a Korean version of “Outside Your Body” with Drunken Tiger’s (Korean/American hip-hop group) member, [Tiger] JK and his wife (Tasha Reid). Those are my collaborations. JK is like the Korean Jay-Z. She’s (Tasha) also a rapper.” And with Ameriie being a married woman who is at a different point in her life compared to her previous
album ‘In Love & War,’ she talks about how much the album content has changed, including the sound shifting towards “trance and electronic.” On the album subject … “This particular album is different as far as the subject matter. I kind of went in a place I didn’t go before. Relationships are very important to talk about but I also want to go a little deeper in to what it is that makes us human and what we have in common. Not just only from
a romantic aspect, but what it is that makes us tick. I consider myself to be a very spiritual person. I love science, I love quantum physics and metaphysics. I just wanted to put that into my music. You can figure out how to include anything in music, you just [have] to make sure it sounds good. I don’t like to be too preachy, so a lot of the stuff is subliminal or it has such a driving beat so that if you don’t want to hear the message, you don’t have to. You’ll either recognize what
it is immediately because you’re into the same thing or you want to investigate it further.” On the main sound of the album … “Trance and electronic. 80’s new wave, but not in the sense of the sound, particularly, but more so the song structures themselves. I really wanted to try different things. Even with vocal approach, some of the songs my sister listened to and she didn’t even know it was me. I wanted to experiment with androgyny. Some of the ways I was singing, it’s kind of androgynous. I felt like, if we strip away who we are on the outside physically including gender… ultimately, we are spirits that have no gender. To me, putting that androgyny into some moments of the songs was able to bring that in. It was a lot of things that I believe, feel, and my outlook on life put into this album, but not just in lyrical ways. It’s in the lyrics, it’s in the song structure, it’s in the vocal approach. I’m really excited about sharing it.” She also reveals that the album is roughly “80% finished” and that her first single “Firestarter” will go to radio before summer is over. Though we’ll have to wait to hear the single, she does give Continued on page 17
Lil Kim verse removed from Monica single Tone Loc pleads not guilty to domestic violence charges By KADEEM LUNDY
R&B songstress Monica’s popular new single, “Anything (To Find You)”, is charting well, hitting #71 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart, as she readies her upcoming seventh studio album, New Life. However, there’s a little controversy surrounding the track — it’s missing a verse from a featured artist, who graced the original leak. That artist being Lil Kim. Kim’s verse has been removed, entirely, from the final version, but not at Monica’s request. A rep from the singer’s label, J Records, told Billboard.com that the rapper’s verse was omitted from the official version due to contractual issues. While J didn’t give any details, Monica did. She blames the estate of the late Notorious B.I.G. for not clear-
ing a sample and Kim’s bars. The song was produced by Missy Elliott and includes a guest spot from Rick Ross. But in addition to Kim, it originally featured a sample from Biggie’s 1995 hit, “Who Shot Ya”, both of which were left off the official version. In a series of tweets, Monica explained what happened, as well as her disappointment in Kim’s verse being removed. She vowed, however, to get the verse back and release it. “I am just finding out what has happened to my single and myself & Missy are beyond hurt that @LilKim was removed,” the singer wrote (@MonicaMyLife). “She’s our friend, a legend & @LilKim will get the respect she deserves at all cost. The clearance was revoked & I’m fighting to get it reinstated by the Biggie Estate.” Monica also explained that Voletta Wallace, the mother of Biggie, has control over his estate (and the song sample),
and did not give approval for Kim’s verse. Apparently, Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, has the final say-so, and she didn’t give a clearance for both. “We respect all parties involved & were gonna do WHATEVER to keep the song as is because @lilKim the bizness on the record,” Monica added. “I am as thorough as they come and I LOVE @LilKim bottom line is Ms Wallace has the final say and she said No. If we put it out we get SUED.” During a recent interview with “The Lil Kim Fan Club Show”, Kim herself spoke about her verse on the track, stating that the verse she originally recorded was a lot longer. Apparently, it was shortened to make room for Rick Ross’s verse, but added that her full verse on the song would appear on Monica’s upcoming album. New Life is due out this October.
By GIL KAUFMAN “Wild Thing” rapper Tone Loc was in a Los Angeles courtroom on Thursday, where the 45-year-old MC (born Anthony Smith) pleaded not guilty to felony possession of an assault weapon and domestic violence charges. Loc was arrested last month for suspicion of felony domestic violence following an alleged altercation with the mother of one of his children. According to TMZ, police found an unregistered military-grade assault rifle, a semi-automatic Colt AR-15 Sporter, during their investigation into the incident on June 18. He is slated to return to court in the case on July 28. Last December, Loc was
arrested for DUI, but his manager told TMZ that his client does not drink and it was a seizure that caused him to drive erratically. Best known for his gravelly voice and laid-back attitude, Loc had two best-selling singles from his 1989 debut, Loc-ed After Dark, which was followed by the less-successful 1991 disc Cool Hand Loc. After his music career cooled off, the rapper used his unmistakable voice to launch a second career as a voice-over actor and sometime movie actor, appearing in films such as “The Adventures of Ford Fairlane” and “Posse.” He’s also lent his voice to the movies “FernGully: The Last Rainforest,” “A Cool Like That Christmas” and “Titan A.E.,” as well as the TV shows “King of the Hill” and “C-Bear and Jamal.”

Penny Johnson Jerald cast in ‘Castle’ LOS ANGELES — Actress Penny Johnson Jerald has joined the cast of the New York-set mystery series “Castle,” ABC said Thursday. The former “24” star will be a series regular for Season 4 of “Castle,” starting with the show’s season premiere Sept. 19, the network said. She will play by-the-book New York Police Department Police Captain Victoria Gates. The character of Capt. Roy Montgomery, played by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, was killed in the series’ third season finale. Gates will come to the station from Internal Affairs as his replacement. “Penny is an actress of
extraordinary depth, versatility and experience. We are delighted to have her as a part of the ‘Castle’ family, and look forward to everything that she’s going to bring to the role,” Andrew Marlowe, creator/executive producer of “Castle,” said in a statement. Returning for Season 4 will be Nathan Fillion as mystery writer Richard Castle, Stana Katic as NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, Tamala Jones as Medical Examiner Lanie Parish, Jon Huertas as NYPD Detective Javier Esposito, Seamus Dever as NYPD Detective Kevin Ryan, Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers, and Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle.
Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony will Tyrese and Rev. Run still produce reality show together writing a book together Despite their recent divorce announcement, ending their seven-year marriage, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony is still set to produce the Latin reality show, Q’Viva! Q’Viva, which is produced by Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment, will continue as planned, reports Access Hollywood. A spokesperson for the former couple announced that Lopez and Anthony are “committed” to the show and added, “The show goes on!” Q’Viva! chronicles Anthony and Lopez’s search for new talent across 21 Latin American countries. The show is set to begin shooting later this year. According to industry
prognosis, the recent split may be good for Lopez’s career due to publicity of her personal issues, including higher album sales, more movie roles, and even a possible memoir, which is not uncommon after a highly publicized divorce.
Tyrese is on a roll. He gave some insight about his upcoming literary production, “Manology” with Rev. Run. The pair are working together to get women to understand men and are going to take a unique approach to the whole thing. “I am doing a book with Rev. Run called ‘Manology’ dissecting the thoughts of man,” the actor told BET. “It’s going to be a revealing, uncomfortable truth coming from a married man’s perspective as well as a single man’s perspective.” Both industry celebrities have been giving a few tidbits via Twitter to wet the taste buds of fans.
Run tweeted: “Ladies: No man is worth your tears, but once you find a man that is, he’ll never make you cry. #MANOLOGY.” Tyrese tweeted: “A lot of dudes STUCK w/horrible BabyMomma’s trying to convert them from being a bedroom freak into a MOTHER..#NotGonnaHappen #MANOLOGY.” Since the two have very different backgrounds, experiences and styles, the book is bet to offer a real contrast. “We hope to paint a clearer picture of who we are, where we are, and what the next phase of man is from our humble opinions,” the singer explained.
Continued from page 16 fans a sample of what to expect from two album tracks – “Run For Cover” and “Sodom and G.” On “Run For Cover” … “It’s kind of like a metaphor [for] self suppression. We’re suppressing who we really are or our ideas. We’re truly not living 100% authentically with ourselves and representing ourselves to the world as who we really are. We’re always running. But we’re not running from someone else, we’re really running from ourselves. Ultimately you’ll run out of places to hide because you can never really run from your true self.” On “Sodom and G” … “ …like Sodom and Gomorrah. The song on the surface is about a broken relationship. It’s destroyed. I compare that to the fiery destruction the city of Sodom and Gomorrah [faced]. I used the biblical story as an example as far as looking back that, I’m looking back at everything I left behind. The twist in “Sodom and G” is that, because I’m so into ancient astronaut theory, [I included] the theory that extraterrestrials were here in ancient times and helped build the pyramids. It’s also the idea that Sodom and Gomorrah wasn’t destroyed by a fire ball, but was actually destroyed by nuclear weapons from extraterrestrials. People might be like, “What?!” but I use a lot of layers when I’m writing; I like to really layer. Its fun for me as an artist and it really allows me to get into it and tell the story I want to tell.” The singer goes into more depth in her interest in recording in “DNA repairing frequencies” as well, which you can read more here. Ameriie is still aiming for a Spring 2012 release for the project.

Mobile devices to lead consumer electronics growth More customers than ever will buy tablet computers and smartphones this year, driving consumer electronics revenue to a record high of $190 billion in 2011, according to a new forecast from a leading industry trade group. Sales of tablet computers such as Apple Inc’s iPad and its rivals will reach 26.5 million units, resulting in $14 billion in revenue, the Consumer Electronics Association said in a report released yesterday. Smartphone sales will increase by 45 percent to $23 billion, the study said. “One year ago, tablets were a new and
unproven market, and now they, along with other mobile connected devices including
smartphones and ereaders, are leading the entire industry to positive growth,” Steve
Koenig, the group’s director of industry analysis, said in a statement.
The consumer electronics industry will expand by 5.6 percent this year, ahead of the GDP growth rate in the United States of 2.4 percent. Shipment revenues for consumer electronics will also climb next year, to an all-time high of $197 billion. Unit sales of e-readers, such as Amazon.com’s Kindle, will double, bringing in $1.8 billion. These mobile products are boosting revenue growth for the industry as other types of consumer electronics, such as flat-screen TVs, show declines, Koenig added. The study found that 88 percent of U.S.
households own at least one digital TV. Because of this high rate, sales of TVs are set to fall this year, with revenue of more than $18 billion. TVs that are connected to the Internet are likely to be a growing area, with more than 10.4 million units shipping to stores this year. Despite the slow adoption of 3D, TVs that have that feature will ship 3.6 million units, up from 1.9 million units last year. Apple will release its quarterly results today, and sales numbers of the new, thinner iPad 2 will be in the spotlight. Wall Street estimates that Apple sold about 8 million new iPads in the quarter.
Moody’s suggests U.S. eliminate debt ceiling By WALTER BRANDIMARTE Ratings agency Moody’s suggested yesterday the United States should eliminate its statutory limit on government debt to reduce uncertainty among bond holders. The United States is one of the few countries where Congress sets a ceiling on government debt, which creates “periodic uncertainty” over the government’s ability to meet its obligations, Moody’s said in a report. “We would reduce our assessment of event risk if the government changed its framework for managing govern-
ment debt to lessen or eliminate that uncertainty,” Moody’s analyst Steven Hess wrote in the report. The agency last week warned it would cut the United States’ AAA credit rating if the government misses debt payments, increasing pressure on Republicans and the White House to come up with a budget agreement. Moody’s said it had always considered the risk of a U.S. debt default very low because Congress has regularly raised the debt ceiling during many decades, usually without controversy. However, the current wide divisions between the House of Represen-
tatives and the Obama administration over the debt limit creates a high level of uncertainty and causes us to raise our assessment of event risk,” Hess said. Stepping further into the heated political debate about U.S. debt problems, Moody’s suggested the government could look at other ways to limit debt. It cited Chile, widely praised as Latin America’s most fiscally-sound country, as an example. “Elsewhere, the level of deficits is constrained by a ‘fiscal rule,’ which means the rise in debt is constrained though not technically limited,” Moody’s said, adding that such rule has been effective in Chile.
An elderly man walks past The National Debt Clock, which displays the current United States gross national debt and each American family’s share, on a wall in midtown Manhattan.
It also cited the example of the Maastricht criteria in Europe, which determines that the ratio of government debt to GDP should not exceed 60 percent. It
noted, however, that such a rule is often breached by the governments. In the United States, Moody’s said the debt limit had not effectively
curbed the rise in government debt because lawmakers regularly raise it and because that limit is not related to the level of expenditures approved by Congress.
Halliburton profit jumps on strong U.S. demand Halliburton Co., the world’s second-largest oilfield services company, reported a forecasttopping 54 percent jump in quarterly profit yesterday as a U.S. drilling boom showed no signs of cooling off. High oil prices have prompted energy producers to plunge billions of dollars into developing fields such as Texas’ Eagle Ford shale, a move that
allowed Halliburton to push through price increases in the quarter. Halliburton is the leader in the North American market in pressure pumping technology that enables oil and gas producers tap in the shale fields, and its second quarter results show it benefited from that market position. “It was both top and
bottom lines, and a significant component was pricing,” said Roger Read, analyst with Morgan Keegan & Co. Halliburton said activity boom in North America was likely to last beyond this year, the company said. “Strong crude prices, operators’ improved cash flows combined with their ability to access capital, and the increasingly liquids-
rich nature of the United States land market, give us continued confidence in the strength of North America through 2012,” Chief Executive and Chairman Dave Lesar said in a statement. Second-quarter net profit climbed to $739 million, or 80 cents per share, from $480 million, or 53 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding one-time
items, the company earned 81 cents per share, topping the 74 cents per share that analysts had on average forecast, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Revenue rose 35 percent to $5.9 billion and came in above the average analyst forecast of $5.71 billion. Activity outside North America was soft, the company said,
confirming its previous comments that margins outside North America were rising slower than it hoped. Seasonal activity increases in the North Sea and Russia lifted revenues, but the shutdown in Libya, delays in Iraqi projects, rising sub-Saharan Africa costs and sluggish markets in the United Kingdom and Algeria all weighed, it said.

Poll: World economy to keep strong but risks abound By ANDY BRUCE LONDON — The world economy should expand steadily this year and next thanks mainly to prospering emerging powers, a Reuters poll showed, but fiscal troubles lurking in Europe and potentially the United States risk blowing this view apart. The quarterly survey of more than 350 economists from all over the world showed a dimmer outlook for most of the rich-world Group of Seven economies since the last survey in April. Only Germany, booming thanks to buoyant exports, is expected to post growth averaging more than 3 percent this year. Elsewhere, fiscal austerity in Europe and growing debt fears have soured analysts’ sentiment. By contrast, emerging powers like China have enjoyed near double-digit annual growth rates since the global recession — but they face risks of their own, struggling to contain rampant inflation that has accompanied fervent growth. Economists pointed to the fiscal crisis rag-
ing in the euro zone’s peripheral countries and the political deadlock in the United States surrounding an increasingly urgent lift to the country’s legal debt ceiling as the biggest risks to global economic growth. “If the (euro zone) debt crisis is mishandled, it’s a major threat. But it’s a threat comparable to the mishandling of the U.S. sovereign debt crisis. It’s six and two threes,” said Willem Buiter, chief economist at Citi. The poll showed the world economy expanding 4.1 percent this year and 4.3 percent next year, little changed from April’s survey. Buiter said that authorities in emerging markets are largely behind the curve in monetary policy, which could leave open the prospect that their boom could become a bubble and then a bust — but not for a couple of years. While economists cut their U.S. economic outlook compared with a poll published last month, they still see the United States performing better this year than struggling European peers like Britain,
Italy and France. They saw the U.S. economy growing an average 2.5 percent this year, before picking up to 3.0 percent next year comfortably in — excess of the sub-2 percent growth rates seen for this year for Europe’s G7 members, excluding Germany. “It was the surge in oil and gasoline prices that hurt the (U.S.) economy the most in the first half, and now that they’re down, that should take the weight off,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics. The dimming U.S. outlook has had a knock-on effect for Canadian growth prospects this year, with economists applying a hefty downgrade to their quarterly growth profiles. Still, the focus over the next few months will be averting sovereign defaults in both the euro zone and the United States. While the euro zone question is one of fundamental solvency, most notably in Greece, the U.S. problem is a political one. Economists remain confident that U.S. lawmakers will reach a deal to raise the government’s debt ceiling. All
but two of 40 economists polled said a deal would be reached. “They will squeak something out, but the odds of failure have increased,” said Chris Lowe, chief economist for FTN Financial and one of the economists surveyed. The poll was conducted from Friday to Wednesday and was completed before House Republican leader Eric Cantor said President Barack Obama walked out of a meeting on Wednesday evening, escalating concerns about the negotiations. Lawmakers disagree over budget deficit reduction measures that are a condition for extending the legal $14.3 trillion borrowing limit — needed so the U.S. government can fund its commitments next month. In Europe, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said the euro zone and International Monetary Fund must quickly approve a bailout to avoid a collapse of Greece’s economic reform plans. While Germany has recently topped the
European — and G7 — growth charts, peripheral strugglers like Greece, Ireland, Spain and Italy will drag hard on the euro zone’s economic performance. The 17-nation bloc’s economy will probably grow just 0.4 percent per quarter from here until next April. That would be slower than the 0.8 percent rise seen in the first quarter of this year. Economists in the poll also left their 2011 and 2012 growth forecasts unchanged at 2.0 and 1.7 percent, respectively. By contrast, the German GDP growth outlook for this year and next was 3.4 percent and 1.9 percent. “Germany’s growth will remain above average, by historic and euro zone standards, so long as the euro zone doesn’t totally fall apart and leave just a core group of countries remaining,” said Timo Klein, an economist at IHS Global Insight. Unlike Germany, Britain’s economy probably struggled to generate meaningful growth in the second quarter and its prospects ahead
look likely to be jaded by fierce fiscal austerity measures and high inflation. recovery Japan’s from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that killed at least 21,000 people looks likely to proceed at a faster pace than even last thought month, helped by a restoration of factory output. Although Japan, the world’s third-largest economy likely contracted for a third straight quarter in April-June, it is likely to emerge from recession this quarter as it shakes off supply constraints more quickly than expected, according to the poll of around 30 economists. “Automakers are pushing forward production plans and companies are making efforts to limit the impact of summer power shortages on output,” said Takumi Tsunoda, senior economist at Shinkin Central Bank Research Institute. “We expect factory output to normalize in July-September.”
New app connects art GM to invest $328 million lovers to Lincoln Center in Flint, Michigan plant By BERND DEBUSMANN JR.
By BEN KLAYMAN FLINT, Michigan — General Motors Co. said yesterday it will invest $328 million in its Flint, Michigan, assembly plant to make the next generation of fullsize pickup trucks. The U.S. automaker said as part of the investment it will create or retain 150 jobs at the plant, which opened in 1947 and employs about 2,050 people. GM is expected to roll out the next version of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra
pickups in early 2013. The investment is part of a plan announced by GM in May to invest $2 billion in 17 U.S. plants. GM has been criticized by analysts for its 122 days of full-size pickup truck inventory in the United States at the end of June. That was 50 percent higher than the 80 days typically preferred and above the industry’s still-hefty average of 99 days. GM has said it will reduce its big pickup inventory to a range of 100 to 110 days by year end. U.S. sales through June of the Silverado
and Sierra were up 3 percent and 1 percent, respectively. The Silverado is the No. 2 selling vehicle in the U.S. market behind Ford Motor Co’s F-150 pickup. GM said last month it would close the Flint plant for two weeks in July to conduct maintenance work and prepare for a change to 2012 model-year production. In January, GM announced plans to add a third shift of 750 workers at the Flint plant in the third quarter to build heavy-duty versions of the big pickups.
Patrons of the arts can now be instantly connected with New York City’s famed Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts thanks to a new app. “We are trying to transform the way a cultural institution engages patrons with new technology,” said Peter Duffin, Lincoln Center’s vice president, brand and marketing. The free app enables users to keep an eye on current and coming events and to buy tickets directly from their phone. “It’s the digital
equivalent of collecting the playbill of shows you get to see,” Duffin said. Users unfamiliar with Lincoln Center’s 16-acre campus will also be able to explore maps that include restrooms, subway stations and dining options, which can be reserved through the app. The map portion of the app includes littleknown facts - called “secrets” - about Lincoln Center. “For example, you can learn how many gallons gush through our fountain in a minute, or that the new film center has the largest LCD screen on public display in America,” Duffin said.
He added that the app can be useful both for older patrons, who may have been attending the theater regularly for years, or for younger fans. “I think all patrons, no matter what age, are connected to technology.” Lincoln Center first opened its doors in 1962, and now is visited by over 5 million people each year. It is home to the New York City Ballet, the Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera and the prestigious Juilliard School, as well as eight other organizations. The Lincoln Center app is available as a free download on the iTunes store.

Jose Reyes OK in rehab game S
PORTS
BRIEFS
Report: Lamar Odom passenger in crash
By MIKE MAZZEO
NEW YORK — New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes tested his injured hamstring in a minor league rehab game with the Class A Brooklyn Cyclones yesterday and proclaimed himself ready for the big leagues. “Everything went good,” Reyes said. “I feel happy about it. I was able to move around a little bit in the field with no problem. Hopefully, I’m playing (for the Mets on Tuesday).” Before yesterday’s game, Reyes posed for pictures and signed autographs — for his new teammates. “I got a chance to talk to a lot of them,” Reyes said. “It was a lot of fun. I bought them dinner.” Then he got down to business. Reyes played six innings, went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored at the plate. He ran hard out of the batter’s box and cleanly handled his only chance in the field for the Cyclones in the third inning at MCU Park in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. Afterward, Reyes said he felt no ill effects on the left hamstring strain that’s caused him to miss the Mets’ last 12 games — counting yesterday — and expects to be activated from the disabled list and rejoin the team tonight night when it takes on the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field. Reyes has been on the DL since July 3 after straining his left hamstring on July 2 against the New York
Yankees. He was eligible to come off the DL yesterday, but the Mets took a cautious approach and wanted him to play one minor league rehab game to see how his hamstring responded to game action. It didn’t take long for everyone to find out. Reyes hustled down to first base after lining out in the first and grounding out to second in the third. He doubled off the base of the left-center field wall in the sixth and coasted in to second. He later advanced to third and scored on a bloop single. “I’ve been running the last five or six days and doing a lot of leg testing,” Reyes said. “So far, so good. I didn’t worry about anything, I just want to play the game.” Reyes came out onto the field in the seventh so that he could receive a standing ovation as he walked back to the dugout. He spoke briefly with the media before being hoarded by droves of camp kids, signing a few autographs and leaving in a black car with Mets security. Reyes said he was going to return home and get some rest. Then he was going to head to Citi Field to watch the Mets play the Florida Marlins last night. “I wanted to (stay in), but the manager (Rich Donnelly) said ‘That’s enough, you’re ready,’” Reyes said. Reyes said he didn’t approach the game any differently, even though he was playing in the minors. “You have to run to first, second, field ground balls, it’s the same game,” Reyes said. “I played in the minors (yester-
day) and I’ll (probably) be in the majors (Tuesday), but it’s still baseball.” General manager Sandy Alderson, vice president of player development and scouting Paul DePodesta, Reyes’ agent, Peter Greenberg and trainer Ray Ramirez were all on hand. Ramirez sat in the first row, while Alderson, DePodesta and Greenberg kept a close eye on Reyes from a luxury suite behind home plate. Reyes, who is slated to become a free agent at season’s end, leads the majors with 15 triples and a .354 batting average. He also leads the majors in multi-hit games (43). His 30 stolen bases rank second in the majors and are 18 more than the Cyclones had as a team combined during the 2011 season, prior to yesterday. Reyes ran in a straight line to test the injury on Saturday and followed that up by running the bases with no setbacks on Sunday. The temperature at gametime yesterday was around 90 degrees. “It was really hot out,” Reyes said. “But other than that, it was perfect.” Reyes arrived at the ballpark around 10 a.m. He fielded grounders and did some light jogging in the outfield before the game, but he didn’t sign any autographs. Reyes had never played for the Cyclones prior to yesterday afternoon’s game. He is the 13th Met to play for the Cyclones as part of a rehab assignment and first since right fielder Carlos Beltran, who played in five games with Class A Brooklyn from Sept. 26, 2009.
Ugandan team headed to Little League World Series S O U T H WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - A youth baseball team from Uganda will be the first from the continent of Africa to compete in the Little League World Series. The Rev. John Foundation Little League team from Kampala won the Middle East and Africa region on Saturday, beating Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, 6-4. The Saudi team had won the
region for the last 11 years. Kampala beat squads from Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa in the regional tourney. The five-team, four-day tournament was played at the Little League Baseball European Leadership Training Center in Kutno, Poland. Kampala will play the Canadian champion on Aug. 19 in the first
round in South Williamsport, Pa. “We are delighted to have a team from Africa represented for the first time at the World Series this year,” said Stephen D. Keener, president and chief executive of Little League Baseball and Softball. “We have to acknowledge the hard work of Richard Stanley, who has played a pivotal role in helping Little League
get started in Uganda and his continued assistance in helping the league on a year-toyear basis.” Sixteen teams of 11and 12-year-old boys will be split into U.S. and International brackets culminating in the championship game on Aug. 28. Little League officials say Kampala had its first youth team in 2005.
Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom was a passenger in a car that struck and seriously injured a motocyclist and a pedestrian in his hometown of Queens, New York, on Thursday, according to the New York Post. A publicist for Odom’s wife, Khloe Kardashian, told the newspaper that Kardashian was not with her husband a the time of the accident. A source close to Odom also told the Post that he was not physically injured in the accident, but was “shaken up” by the incident. A spokeswoman for Odom told ESPNLosAngeles.com’s Dave McMenamin that Odom planned to release a statement on the incident soon. Odom has yet to tweet anything about the incident via his Twitter account, except to note he was filming a Nike commercial at Lincoln Park on Saturday. An officer for the New York Police Department said Sunday he had no information on the accident.
Maya Moore tops WNBA jersey sales
Maya Moore NEW YORK — Rookie Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx has the top-selling jersey in the WNBA this season. The No. 1 draft pick out of Connecticut leads the list announced yesterday, ahead of Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks. Parker is sidelined with a knee injury and had held the top ranking since October 2008. Moore is averaging 14 points and five rebounds for the Lynx, who are second in the Western Conference behind Phoenix. Essence Carson of the New York Liberty is third on the list, followed by Lauren Jackson of the Seattle Storm, Sylvia Fowles of the Chicago Sky and Marion Jones of the Tulsa Shock. The list is based on sales on NBAStore.com from October 2010 through June. Moore’s jersey is the second best-selling jersey for a No. 1 WNBA draft pick since Parker. The Lynx ranked No. 1 in team sales, followed by Seattle, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Indiana.

Hank Haney: Tiger Woods can hit mark STATELINE, Nev. — Tiger Woods’ exswing coach believes the former No. 1 player can win the five majors he needs to pass Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18. Hank Haney says it’s just a matter of Woods getting healthy. Woods was not at the British Open last week, missing his second straight major while he tries to recuperate from “minor injuries” to his left knee and Achilles due to an awkward stance in the pine straw in the third round at the Masters. Woods has had four knee surgeries since his freshman year at Stanford. “So he’s going to be in some level of discomfort for the rest of his career,” said Haney, who was at the American Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe this weekend. “Now, it’s just a question of whether or not he can tolerate that.” Haney, the swing coach for Woods during one his most successful
stretches, says the key for Woods is getting back to where he can practice regularly. In announcing earlier this month that he would skip the British Open, Woods said he hadn’t hit golf balls since May. The knee injuries, combined with the sex scandal that led to his divorce, have limited Woods to about half as much practice time as he used to get, Haney
Ibaka nationalized by Spain, ready to play Euros MADRID - Oklahoma City Thunder forward Serge Ibaka has been granted Spanish nationality on Friday, clearing the way for him to help Spain defend its European championship this summer. “Spain is a country that has given me a lot,” Ibaka said after Spain’s Council of Ministers approved his petition for nationality. “It will be an honor to give Spain back all that it has given me on the court.” The 21-year-old was born in the Republic of Congo but played for Spanish clubs for three years before moving to the NBA in 2009. According to Spanish media reports, he maintains a residence in Barcelona. Ibaka must swear loyalty to the Spanish crown and constitution to complete the nationalization process before he can team with Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol and brother Marc of the Memphis Grizzlies in a formidable front court for Spain. “Pau is possibly the most talented center with the best fundamentals in the (NBA),” Ibaka said. “It will be a dream to play with him.”
Tiger Woods said. “That’s a lot of missed time,” Haney said Friday. “Given the opportunity to practice and play, if he still has the desire and the passion, and he has the body that will allow him to do it, then there’s no reason to think that he couldn’t still break Nicklaus’ record.” Haney said there are two ways to look at it because Nicklaus was 46 when he won his last major at the Masters in
1986. Woods is 35. “Tiger has 40 more majors to play in. But these majors are slipping by,” Haney said. “And then you look and you say he just needs to win five more. But the fourth and fifth one will be the really difficult ones. But you can say he’s got plenty of time, he could do it.” On the other hand, Haney said it would mean Woods would have to win “more majors than Phil
Mickelson has won his whole career and he has to do it after the age of 35.” “When you start looking at it like that, you think this is going to be really difficult,” Haney said. “But I wouldn’t put anything past him, if he can prepare and play. He’s arguably the greatest or the second greatest player that’s ever played the game. But he’s still got to play and practice.” Haney was at the celebrity golf tournament on the CaliforniaNevada border as part of his continuing efforts to help Charles Barkley, the NBA great turned TV analyst known for his love of golf and his infamous stutter swing. Barkley is “so great for the game of golf and the game of golf loves him. You see by the reception he always gets here,” Haney told reporters at EdgewoodTahoe Golf Course before the 54-hole tourney began. While Haney had success as Woods’ swing coach, he didn’t fare as well getting the hitch out of Barkley’s swing on his Golf Channel tel-
evision show two years ago. “But it’s kind of his trademark now. I don’t know, he’s probably made millions off the hitch,” Haney said. “Who else has had five million people look at their swing on YouTube, you know?” Haney said Barkley swings without the hitch on the practice tee, but for some reason isn’t able to pull the trigger when he gets on the course. “It’s only like 50 yards, maybe, at the most from the practice tee to the first tee,” he said. “But for him it must seem like it’s 550 yards, because once he gets over that first tee, something different happens.” Barkley was tied for second to last after Friday’s first round. “He’s probably the most humble, gracious, giving professional athlete-celebrity that I’ve ever seen, and one of my favorite people in the world,” Haney said. “And it bothers me when I see him out there just struggling so much.”
USC suspends Mar c Tyler By JOE SCHAD USC announced yesterday that it has suspended running back Marc Tyler for the season opener against Minnesota on Sept. 3 and from all team activities immediately for comments made to TMZ recently. Tyler, who appeared intoxicated on video, said he was “joking” when he said he responded to a question about if athletes were paid more at USC or in the pros. “USC,” Tyler said. “They breaking bread.” Trojans coach Lane Kiffin wants Tyler to recognize that the punishment is a way to show the “high standard for player behavior.” “I was very disappointed when I learned of Marc Tyler’s
inappropriate comments that were captured by the media last week,” Kiffin said in a statement. “That is not the way that we expect our players to represent USC and our team. “I have consulted with athletic director Pat Haden and I am suspending Marc for our upcoming season opener and potentially further, and in the meantime I am also suspending him from all team activities.” Tyler also said USC stands for “University of Sexual Ballers” and also made a reference to reality star Kim Kardashian, who once dated former USC running back Reggie Bush. Tyler was apologetic for embarrassing the school. “I am disappointed that I let down all the people who have supported me as I have been
working through some personal issues,” he said in a statement. “After meeting today with Mr. Haden and Coach Kiffin, I realize how my behavior and my statements, even though I was joking, can reflect poorly on so many people. ... I accept my punishment and I regret that I will miss the opening game of my senior year. I am committed to doing everything the right way so that I can be reinstated to the team.” Tyler rushed for 913 yards and nine touchdowns last season and was USC’s projected starter at running back. Dillon Baxter and Curtis McNeal are among the other running backs who will be expected to step forward for Tyler. Haden said Tyler “stepped way out of line.”

Dwight Howard might play overseas FAIRBURN, Ga. — Dwight Howard’s frustration with the NBA lockout has caused the Orlando Magic star to strongly consider playing overseas. In an interview Sunday with The Associated Press, Howard said he would consider playing in China or Europe if the NBA lockout doesn’t end. Howard, a five-time All-Star who led Orlando to the NBA finals in 2009, stopped short of saying he’s in contract discussions with teams overseas. “I’m not at liberty to talk about it,” he said, “but there’s a huge possibility about me going to China or me going overseas to play basketball.” Howard said in an earlier interview with the Orlando Sentinel
that playing overseas during the lockout would be fun. “I’d have to think [about Europe] seriously, but it’s not a decision that should be made in a rush,” said Howard, speaking to reporters during a promotional tour in Spain. “I think has more China options. I’ve thought about it a little bit, but not in depth. The big issue is the potential of injury.” New Jersey guard Deron Williams said recently after signing with a team in Turkey that Howard could become a worldwide star if he played in China. Howard, who hosted a celebrity basketball game Sunday at Langston Hughes High School to raise money for his charity, didn’t disagree. “The big thing for me is not giving too much
information away, but at the same time I still need to let people know what’s going on with me,” Howard said. “I don’t want to just sit over here and forget about basketball and waste, you know, opportunities for me to get better.” Howard wasn’t interested in discussing his potential free agency at the end of next season. Along with Williams and New Orleans guard Chris Paul, Howard is a marquee name for potential free agency in 2012. He saw no point in discussing the 2012-13 season when there’s no guarantee of an NBA season in 2011-12. That’s why an opportunity overseas could make sense soon. “If I decide to go overseas, the main thing is for me to continue to get better, not to do the things that I
normally do, but do better at the things I’m not good at,” Howard said. “So I can use that talent to go overseas, working on my skills and staying in great shape.” Howard recently hosted 400 kids at a youth basketball camp in Spain and was planning to host “a bunch of them in China, but the lockout messed everything up.” The former overall No. 1 NBA draft pick loves working with kids in his native Atlanta, but he’s also longing to spread his appeal in other parts of the world. “Being a role model lasts longer than being a basketball player,” he said. “Right now I have an opportunity to do a lot of great things. I’m blessed with a lot of talents, but one of my talents is being great with kids. Being a good role model, you just want to
lead them in the right
direction.”
beautiful daughters saying that you gave up,’ “ Jackson said. “To make a long story short, I got off the phone an hour later and he told me it was OK. He thanked me. We were in tears crying.” Jackson was still playing in the NBA when he was ordained as a minister in 1997 at a church in his native Brooklyn, N.Y. Desiree was later ordained at the same church. Jackson admits his faith was tested this year when his brother, Troy, a former player at the University of Louisville, died in his
sleep while attending All-Star weekend in Los Angeles. Jackson delivered the eulogy for his brother at a packed church in Long Island. “Two hundred and fifty people got saved at Mark’s brother’s funeral,” Desiree Jackson. “He did an altar call at a funeral. These were elite people from across the board from also the NBA, in the scene and behind the scenes. But the thing is that you know the calling was on [Jackson’s] life when you’re broken and you’re ministering at your brother’s funeral.”
Jackson practices what he preaches By MARC J. SPEARS LOS ANGELES - Six weeks after the Golden State Warriors made him their new coach, Mark Jackson’s Sunday mornings are often spent not in a gym, but in a Van Nuys church. Jackson can be found helping his wife setting up chairs, vacuuming, arranging his flowers as they transform the Van Nuys Seventh-day Adventist Church into True Love Worship Center International, a multicultural, non-denominational church the Jacksons run twice a week. The NBA lockout has kept Jackson from guiding the Warriors, but he still has his own congregation to lead. “God had the audacity and the sense of humor to have an NBA head coach as a pastor,”
Jackson said during a recent sermon. Jackson spent 17 seasons as an NBA point guard and ranks third all time in the league in assists, trailing only John Stockton and Jason Kidd. He worked as an analyst for ABC in recent years until the Warriors hired him as their new coach on June 6. While Jackson doesn’t have any experience as a coach - not even as an assistant - the Warriors hired him, in part, because of the leadership skills he demonstrated during his playing career many of the same qualities he displays as a pastor. Jackson and his wife, former R&B singer Desiree Jackson, are both ordained ministers. They attended a conference in 2002 in the Bahamas, where another pastor told
them they’d someday open their own church. Two years ago, they started renting the midsized church in Van Nuys and began True Love Worship Center largely by word of mouth. Their congregation is now more than 300 strong. In addition to the Sunday service, they also lead a Wednesday evening bible study. Because the Jacksons rent the church, they have to convert it for their services each week. Their goal is to eventually buy a property for their own church. “We opened the church because people were constantly asking for ministry and they were looking for lifechanging statements and activities from us,” Desiree Jackson said. “We’re out here in California in the land of ‘La-La,’ etcetera. You
just know that what God has placed in you, can be life-changing to someone.” Desiree preaches when her husband is not able to attend which was often the case during the second half of the NBA season when he was announcing the Sunday games on ABC. He often received text messages from his wife and the church’s deacons updating him on the service. When Jackson was on one trip last season, he received a call from a church member who was contemplating suicide. “I was on the phone with this guy for an hour basically pleading to him, ‘Don’t do it. You have so much to live for. I don’t want to be in the church telling them that you gave up. I don’t want to look at your wife and your two

NFL, PLAYERS: WE'RE MAKING PROGRESS TOWARD DEAL By HOWARD FENDRICH Noting that “progress has been made,” NFL owners and players wrapped up a round of intensive talks without a full agreement to end the league’s four-month lockout, but determined to keep pushing over the weekend. NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith expects to speak with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in the next couple of days, possibly in person, while the two sides’ legal and financial teams continue working. After about eight hours of negotiations in New York on Friday - tacked onto more than 25 hours across Wednesday and Thursday the league and players issued a joint statement, saying: “The discussions this week have been constructive and progress has been made on a wide range of issues.” They did not reveal any details, citing a gag order imposed by the court-
DeMaurice Smith, foreground center, executive director of the National Football League Players' Association, arrives for labor talks in New York, Friday, July 15, 2011. Significant progress on a major sticking point in the NFL labor impasse — soaring rookie salaries — during marathon talks Thursday raised hopes that a tentative agreement in principle could perhaps come within 24 hours, according to two people familiar with the negotiations.
appointed mediator, U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan. “I wouldn’t dare speculate on where we are,” said Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, one of six members of the owners’ labor committee participating Friday. But people familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press that Friday’s talks moved beyond economic issues to cover
other remaining areas where gaps need to be bridged to finish off a deal. That included player health and safety matters, such as offseason workout rules. The aim was to build upon the significant steps made Thursday, when the framework for a rookie salary system was established, including that first-round draft picks will sign four-year contracts with a club option
for a fifth year. On another financial matter, the perteam cap figure for 2011 will be in the range of $120 million in salaries plus about $20 million or so in benefits, according to people with knowledge of the talks. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the negotiations aimed at breaking the impasse are supposed to be confidential. One person also told the AP that owners first learned Thursday that the NFLPA set up $200,000 in “lockout insurance” for each player if the 2011 season were lost entirely, a policy that cost at least $10 million and was taken out nearly a year ago. That policy was first reported by SI.com. The NFL’s first work stoppage since 1987 began in March, when owners locked out players after negotiations broke down and the old collective bargaining agreement expired. Now the preseason is just a few weeks away. The Hall of Fame game that opens the exhibition season is scheduled for Aug.

7 between the St. Louis Rams and Chicago Bears, who hope to be in training camp by next weekend. Yet camps won’t start before a new CBA is in place. Boylan, who has been on vacation, ordered both sides to meet with him in Minneapolis early next week, and the owners have a special meeting set for next Thursday in Atlanta, where they potentially could ratify a new deal - if one is reached by then. Any agreement also must be voted on by groups of players, including the named plaintiffs in a classaction antitrust lawsuit pending in federal court and the NFLPA’s 32 team representatives. “We made some progress. We continue to have a lot of work to do,” Smith said as he left Friday’s session at a Manhattan law firm. “I know everybody is frustrated, and they want a definitive answer. I hate to disappoint you; you’re not going to get one right now. We’re going to continue to work, and I think that’s a positive sign.” ___
