Live like God Is Your Co Pilot Ephesians 1.1 “I, a prisoner in the Lord, encourage you to live the kind of life which proves that God has called you. One of my friends who is blind has a talking computer he uses to study the Bible. He Henry Nelson has had few chuckles over some of the pronunciations. "For a long time," his computer pronounced Holy Bible as ’holly bible’ until someone figured out how to modify it." But there was one thing he could not change. The computer uses the Spanish pronunciation for Jesus Christ-HEYsus Krist. "The programmer is Hispanic," My friend said with a smile, "and he made sure that HEYsus Krist cannot be altered." I like that. It reminds me that among the things in life that can be changed to suit my taste, one remains tamper-resistant. I cannot change Jesus. When life is unsettled, I gain great comfort from the Bible’s affirmation that is in Hebrews 13:8, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." But the statement is also a stern rebuke to my tendency to try to modify the words and character of Christ when I do not like what He says. How easy it is to forget that I came to Christ longing for Him to transform me, not the other way around! Praise God that His Word and His love are perfect and unchanging and praise Him too that in His love He is working to change me. Amen! One of my goals is to move from the way I think to the way I act. I have written in the past that your identity will determine your activity. Let your identity in Christ determine your activity. In other words live like you
mean it. Live like Christ is your savior and your Lord. He is not only your maker, but also your master. I urge you to prove it in your day to day life and relationships with others. Live in a way that proves you belong to God. Your lifestyle should be in balance with what you believe. Your identity should be balanced by your activity. You are called to a rich life in relationship to God through Jesus Christ. It is not only a call to salvation, but a call to service. A call to something is bigger than us. If God is a supplier of all your needs do you live as a steward putting Him first in your finances, your time, and your abilities? If He is all sufficient do you depend on Him for your every need? If God is Holy and calls us to be Holy do you live in the world, but you not of the world? If He is all knowing do you seek His guidance first? If he came not to serve, but to be a servant is your first thought for others? If He came to seek and save that which was lost does the lostness of your friends and family grip your heart and move you to pray and share what Christ did in your life? Ephesians 4:2-6 says, "Live in a way that promotes unity. Part of living a life that is in balance is living to promote unity. Ephesians 4:2 gives character traits that are part of our activity as Christians. These traits or qualities have to do with our relationship to others. This is highly appropriate for us as you represent Christ and build relationships. Amen! You have to be humble and gentle. Greek and Roman cultures considered humility and gentleness to be weakness showing lack of self-respect. Even in the Old Testament God desired a different character for His children. Isaiah 57:15 says, “The High and Lofty One lives forever, and his
name is holy. This is what he says: I live in a high and holy place. But I am with those who are crushed and humble. I will renew the spirit of those who are humble and the courage of those who are crushed. Jesus expected his disciples then and now to be humble toward each other and serve one another. Amen! Humility is part of our attitude, character or identity. Gentleness is part of our activity. Gentle people do not have to force their priority or personality on others. This is controlled strength. Gentle people do not have to get their way, but instead pave the way to unity. As long as truth and love are not compromised gentleness is the principle. Amen! You have to be patient and loving. Patience or longsuffering is the ability to accept each other’s faults and failures and not taking any vengeance for yourselves. Short tempers are fuses that lead to a lot of blow ups and break ups. Bearing with one another carries the idea of empathizing and having a willingness to forgive our fellow Christ followers. The guiding principle to these character traits is love. It carries the idea that sometimes loving others or seeking their best is not easy. I once read that “Satan separates,
God unites; and love binds us together. If you identify with Jesus then you operate on love. Love binds us together and promotes unity in your diversity of thought, gifts and dreams. If what you are doing in or for the church is not promoting unity then stop it! There are huge differences among us. However there is a huge God who unites us! Ephesians 4:46 says, "There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called in one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." Amen! Unity is not automatic. Ephesians 4:3 says “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. The Spirit unites us in the bonds of peace if we will allow Him to lead us there. Amen! Here is a story I read in a magazine. A man called a pastor’s office at a church one day to inquire into membership in the church. He stated that he would not be able to get involved or anything, but he felt it was important to have some religious affiliation. The pastor advised this man that the church he pastored might not be the best fit for him, but he knew of a place where he would

Great Spoken Words from the Lord, through a chosen vessel By: Bettye Williams An anointed message from God does not have to come from a man of cloth all the time. On Sunday afternoon, at The New Greater St John Primitive Baptist Church (where Dr. Vincent Davis is the Pastor), Jordan Blair delivered that message. This celebratory occasion was to recognize The New Greater St John Primitive Baptist Church for purchasing the note on the building after moving into the building just over one year ago. New Greater St. John has overcome many obstacles to become lenders and not borrowers.
the guest speaker for the hour, Jordan Blair. Dr. Vincent Davis is the Sr. Pastor of the New Greater St. John Primitive Baptist Church as well as businessman and entrepreneur. He’s the founder and owner of Vincent’s School of Music. Dr. Davis is a man of many talents; he’s also a lead singer, soloist, organist and choir director, just to name a few. Jordan has the heart and spirit of an Angel, and the courage to know that whatever he was about to say, it would come straight from his heart because it was what God laid on his heart. Jordan opened with the song, ”I’m Standing In Your Will.” Jordan spoke on the subject

The service opened with devotion and old school gospel songs; “I Love to Praise Him and We Worship You.” Many kind words of welcome were given to all the guests by Sis. Walker. The St. Paul A.M.E. (where Rev. Juan Tolliver is the Pastor), E. L. Wright Male Chorus accompanied Jordan and they rendered two selections before the sermon, “Fighting For the Lord and I Don’t Believe He Brought Me This Far To Leave Me.” That touched souls and members were shouting in the isle. And the moment came for Dr. Vincent Davis to introduce
“Don’t Park There; There Is Work to Be Done”. Many Amen’s, Yes Lords, Hallalula, and Thank You Jesus, were heard by the congregation throughout the message. He told The New Greater St John Primitive Baptist Church to “Keep the Faith, continue to support their pastor and continue the work of the Lord.” He then looked at Dr. Vincent Davis and gave him encouragement and wisdom and said “Because he did not park there, because there was still work to be done, and that the

On the Block and Making a Difference: Mr. Floyd V. Williams, Sr. By: Lola Searcy This week, I asked my Publisher if we could do something a little different with our series, “On the Block and Making a Difference article. Normally, we highlight Preachers and Pastors who are making a difference in their church and the communities where they live and Pastor. This week’s spotlight is not on a Preacher or Pastor, instead we chose to shine the spotlight on a gentleman who does not wear the title of a Preacher or Pastor, but he does have a very successful ministry that he shares with the youth at his church, Full Gospel Holy Temple, Urban League of Greater Dallas and the Cedar Hill ISD. His name is Mr. Floyd Williams, Sr. I became a Floyd Williams fan when I met him at the Urban League of Greater Dallas’ Gala this past August. The Urban League Gala honors those individuals who have contributed their time, talents and their financial resources to help empower and uplift those who find themselves needing the services of the Urban League of Greater Dallas. When I read his bio and listened to his remarks on the evening of the gala, I immediately started trying to find his number, so I could share him with our readers. You would think with his many responsibilities as the Senior Consultant of Supplier Quality and Performance with Verizon, his plate would be full. Not, Mr. Williams. He is among those in the
Supply Chain and Logistics sector who assisted in paving the way for increasing Minority and Women owned business involvement in procurement products and services within the community. Thus, helping establish a viable Verizon Brand and consumer loyalty within the women and minority community and supplier marketplace. Are you still not impressed with Mr. Williams? Then you should know that Mr. Williams is involved with various community, business and education oriented programs like: 2009 – Current he serves as the director of the Y.L.E.C. Program, a program that teaches Youth ages 12 – 17 life skills, avoiding pitfalls, importance of higher learning, college prep & other training and education. He is the current Lead Coordinator/Mentor of the Reaching our Youth (R.O.Y.) Program at Lakeridge Elementary in Cedar Hill, where they teach leadership, interactive, personal goals and achievement skills. He is a lifetime volunteer and supporter of the Urban League of Greater Dallas (he served on the Dallas Board of Directors from 2003 – 2008). Since 2000, he has served as the Vice-President of Verizon’s African American Employee Resource Group.(CITE) From 2000 – 2005 he served on the Minority Business Development Council, where he served as corporate representative for Verizon on the Certification Committee. He currently serves as the Director
of the Junior Brotherhood Mentor Program for boys ages 9 – 17 from single parent homes – helping them to stay on the right path to becoming great men leaders in society. His work with Verizon and several non-profit organizations has garnered him numerous accolades including but not limited to: 2008 and 2009 Recognized by the President of Verizon’s Foundation for volunteering in the community; 2006 Awarded Verizon’s Regional Presidents Award for Board Fulfillment at the Dallas Urban League; 2002 and 2007 he was nominated for Verizon Excellence Awards - Individual & Team. In 2001, he was nominated as Corporate Advocate of the Year by the Dallas/Ft.Worth Minority Business Development Council. During my conversation with Mr. Williams, he spoke of how important it is for all of us to give back, especially to those who are less fortunate. He recalled a conversation with an educator of a lighter hue, who wanted to know why young African American boys and men are so aggressive. After offering an explanation, the door opened to provide a group of African American professionals to work with him in the school district to develop the R.O.Y. program. Dr. Beverly Mitchell – Brooks, President of the Urban League of Greater Dallas, said this about Mr. Williams, “He is not one who whose content-

Pepsi Beverages Company Rebuilding Together Church Woman Of The Week Dallas Revitalize Salvation Army Community Center Rebuilding Together Projects Nationwide Selected for PBC Grants Pepsi Beverage Company (PBC), the North American beverage business unit of PepsiCo, partnered with Rebuilding Together Dallas, an affiliate of the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership, to drive revitalization efforts to The Salvation Army Cedar Crest Community Center. This project is one of seven Rebuilding Together affiliate projects selected by PBC as grant recipients for fall 2010. PBC is issuing a total of $100,000 in grants to these projects, providing Rebuilding Together affiliates with the resources needed to help homeowners and community centers free of charge, across the country this fall. “The work completed on this Community Center will not only benefit those who consider this building their place of work, but it will also increase their ability to serve our neighborhoods,” said Jill Lucien, Executive Director of Rebuilding Together Dallas. “PBC’s dedication to our community will allow our neighborhoods to continue on a path of positive growth and revitalization.” More than 70 PBC associates joined the Rebuilding Together Dallas team to revitalize The Salvation Army community center. In addition to refurbishing the community center in Dallas, PBC is mobilizing associates in its six business units to refurbish homes and community centers in San Diego, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Pittsburg, St. Louis and Seattle throughout the months of September and October. The Dallas Salvation Army on Hutchins Road
has made a sizeable impact on its neighboring, low-income community. The center is provides children’s programs, with a focus on a highly successful sports program, including football, basketball, and cheerleading teams. These team sports Pepsico's Patricia Scott-Jones (center) provide children with L-R Britney Beatey & Joydan Scott with an opportunity to learn valuable life skills, such as leadership and teamwork, which will serve them as they deal with the challenges of growing up in low-income areas. The Salvation Army incorporates mentoring and guidance into all their programs. Thus, these children also have the benefit of meeting men and women who serve as role models and figures of authority, which are sadly lacking in many of their home lives. The Salvation Army football field is a place where the community comes together to cheer on area youth. The football field of the Salvation Army Community Center is in need of several repairs. PBC and Rebuilding Together associates repaired and painted the bleachers, removed graffiti from the surrounding buildings, and poured concrete for a new sidewalk. The Salvation Army football
field is a core piece of the necessary equipment for children participating in the center’s sporting events. The Salvation Army is assured than the planned facility improvements will positively impact hundreds of people who count on the center and its sporting teams. “Pepsi Beverages Company is committed to serving homeowners and communities who are in need of our resources and volunteer-power,” said Catherine Patterson, senior manager, PBC Foundation & Community Engagement. “We are pleased to continue our work with Rebuilding Together to deliver tangible impact to communities nationwide and rebuild houses and centers into safer and warmer homes.” As a National Corporate Sponsor, PBC has been an active collaborator and sponsor of many Rebuilding Together projects and efforts since 2008. During this time, PBC’s support of Rebuilding Together has provided nearly $1 million to serve communities in need through. These contributions are an articulation of PBC’s and PepsiCo’s dedication to “Performance with Purpose” – a commitment to give back to the communities in which it serves as well as delivering sustainable growth. The 'PBC Gives Back’ projects identified by Rebuilding Together preserves affordable homeownership by providing repair, accessibility modifications, and energy efficient upgrades for low-income homeowners and community centers serving low-income neighborhoods.

God’s Amazing Grace God graciously gave us His Son and said, "Whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). We are allowed into an eternal relationship with God because of His grace and are strongly exhorted to live each day knowing our relationship is maintained by the same grace, in which it began, not by anything we do or accomplish. Geraldine There are many Davidson-Hooker things we are called to do as a Child of God, many ways to serve and honor our Heavenly Father, many ways to be obedient and seek after holiness. But we can NEVER fall into the trap of thinking, even for a moment, that what we do adds to our Salvation by grace. As much as faith in Jesus Christ is absolutely necessary for our Salvation, faith in Jesus Christ is also absolutely sufficient. We show our love for God through worship, thanksgiving, prayer, study, obedience, and faithful service; and we acknowledge His saving grace with a humble spirit which does not allow us to become puffed up or feel deserving of our Salvation. We demonstrate our love for others as we refuse to cause harm, in word or deed, refuse to harbor unforgiveness, and actively look for opportunities to serve. And we show an understanding of God's grace as we express our love to others without requiring them to earn our love or even love us in return. Let's receive His grace with a thankful heart, knowing we bring nothing to the cross besides our sin which He then takes away. Let's trust only in His grace, given to us through faith, and express our faith with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength as we love Him and love one another. Let's begin to live this life like we truly understand His amazing grace.
From The Mount REV. JOHNNY KING ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST
Our Sunday school lesson titled, "God Promises an Awesome Thing" Exodus 34: 1, & 4-10, the lesson high points were, "The Attributes of God, the mercy of God to us and knowing why God is wothy of all praises." Dr. Johnny King delivered the morning message titled, "I'm Hooked on Him" Psalms 34: 8, His high points were, "Tasting to see, the Rev. Johnny King goodness of God, tasting to becoming addicted and tasting to see the God is a provider." We were the guest at Mt Pisgah Baptist Church in Ladonia, Texas where Rev. C. W. Pruitt is the pastor to help celebrate their annual Homecoming Day, Dr. Johnny King delivered the annual day message titled, "Depending on God in time of trouble" Psalms 46: 1-3. This Sunday (10/3) we will be the guest at Greater Mt. Olive where Rev. Ralph Whitehead is the pastor to help celebrate their annual Ushers Day.
PILOT, Continued from Page 2 fit in quite nicely. The man asked about a phone number, but the pastor only gave him an address. On Sunday morning, the gentlemen followed the directions and pulled up into the yard of a dilapidated building. The roof was falling in, the doors were locked, and vines were growing into the windows. This gentleman called the pastor and told him that he had given him the wrong directions. "Oh no," the pastor replied. "Not at all.” That is the place. That church has a membership roll filled with people who did not want to get involved or committed. That is what will always happen to a church whose members are interested in religion not relationship." Amen! Use your resources and skills for the building up of a church body. Have you found a place of service? There is a place for all of you to serve. That is the purpose of teaching that the truth will be planted in your heart and that love will work it out in your life. When you attend church you are not there to be entertained, but to experience the rich life of Christ and be transformed in order to serve. Pastors are not called to be your professional Christian. They are called to equip you with the tools to live a life that is growing. Now you know why you should live like God is your co-pilot. Amen!
Prayer Closet PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST
Let me remind you that the unselfish prayer warrior is the most qualified one to stand in the gap for others. Perhaps for those that don't know how to get in touch with God. However, we must remember, that there are a couple of Pastor ingredients that should Clarence be included for us to Henderson appropriately respond to the holiness of God. And these ingredients are confession and forgiveness. You must be willing to present yourself before God with a pure and undivided heart and a light attitude toward every person, including the Lord God. This prepares one for effective intercession. You can confess your sins for hours, but confession is not complete unless it is coupled with forgiveness.

With his roots grounded in the down home blues we all know and love, He has blossomed into one of the most versatile musicians in the world. From Top/Pop 40 & jazz to new school R&B, he has entertained some of the most diverse crowds all over the United States and abroad. He is a highly skilled guitarist, whose ability eludes the barrier lines drawn between various genres of music. He has mastered some of the most unique techniques and patterns throughout the music spectrum, which are exhibited on his first upcoming double CD titled “Jammin’ with LOUIS JAMES BUTLER Vol. 1”, set to release in the second quarter of 2010. He was introduced to music at the beginning of his childhood through his parents. Heavily influenced by his father’s collections of records, and his mother’s roots in the
James Butler
Church, He began his admiration of music at an early age. The youngest of 10 children, he started playing the bass guitar and gradually moved to the traditional 6string guitar by the time he was an adolescent. After performing with numerous small bands and groups as a teenager, he decided to dedicate more time to his craft during his stint at Wiley College, where he joined the Rufus Anderson All-Stars. This ensemble allowed him to learn the skills
and ability to lead and direct a band. After completing college, he moved to Dallas, Texas where he began to make his mark on the Blues scene with the creation of his own band: The Cool Show Band. For more than 30+ years The Cool Show Band evolved with various members during this time providing a unique sound and performance that thrilled the Dallas fan base to whom they catered. The James Butler Cool Show Band initially started with the traditional 4 member rhythm section, and has blossomed into a full scale concert band featuring a 3-member horn section, two guitarists, a bassist, keyboard player, and drummer. He has graced the stages of many of the popular Rhythm and Blues acts throughout the nation and abroad. He has opened shows for the likes of legends such as Bobby “Blue” Bland, Marvin Sease, Vernon Garrett, Lucky Peterson, and most notably the late great R&B crooner Johnnie Taylor, whom he toured with for more than 5 years as the concert band’s rhythm and
lead guitarist. Early in the millennium Mr. Butler branched out even more on his own, by establishing a music production company with the assistance of his musicallyinclined daughter and corporate-minded son: A. J.B. KOOL PRODUCTIONS. Louis James Butler a.k.a. “The Child-Support Man” started at KNON 89.3 in 2002 as a board operator, and then slowly transitioned into a radio talk personality after joining forces with one of the country’s nationally known Rhythm & Blues Radio talk-show host: Cousin Lenny Henderson. For more than 5 years, Mr. Butler co-hosted on various shows while operating the stations audio and music equipment. He has also had the opportunity to have a song retired (“HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. KING) into the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Center archives. These accomplishments and many more are why Louis James Butler will be a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry for years to come.

Barbara McCoy Athletic Dir. South Oak Cilff
Barber Shop Sports Talk with Leon Simon A f r i c a n Americans have never been the majority race in Dallas, yet most of the high schools in the city are in the Southern sector. Down through the years I’ve written Leon Simon plenty of articles on how that’s divided the talent in this city and taken away school spirit, and self esteem. I want go into that right now, but let me explain how that has killed two athletic Giants in our neighborhood. Before I go any farther, for those of you who are naïve enough to think sports has no bearing on education and self esteem, check with Notre Dame, Stanford, Miami, etc. Just
October 1, 2010
to name a few. All private schools with a few exceptions are mostly religious, let’s not forget TCU. Any way all the school buildings in the southern sector are beginning to weigh heavy on the budget, and the pride of the community. David W. Carter once a nationally recognized football power and a very proud program, has dropped from 5a to 4a and are 04 in the won lost column. Carter was one of only two predominately African American schools to win a 5A football title championship. Jack Yates in Houston is the other one, and they won two. I’ve mentioned hundreds of times if school buildings educated students they would have had 10 schools in Plano, Highland Park, Odessa, etc. before they had one in Oak Cliff. How many did they have before inte-
gration? They had two in Dallas, three in Houston, and in 1956 they gave Dallas a third – James Madison. That was a hand me down. Once they found out they had to play sports against these guys, then High schools started popping up everywhere in the black neighborhood. Who in their right mind would want to play Booker T. Washington, or Lincoln with only two Schools in Dallas? In Houston Jack Yates had upward s of 5,700 students every year, no one wanted to play them but a Booker T, Lincoln, or Phyllis Wheatley in Houston. Every now and then Moore high in Waco, and the two schools in Beaumont, that’s another story for another day. Carter is not the only victim. Roosevelt is now 3A and they are 1-4 in win column. Some of these schools don’t have enough
www.dfwelitenews.com
students to pay the light bill. And some genius decided to match these kids against the schools in Florida. This should have been done when Carter, Kimball, SOC, Velt, Lincoln, Madison etc. were having 18 Division One players each year. They waited until they added A. Maceo Smith, Molina, and watered the product down. Today they have 8 schools in Oak Cliff alone and those 8 schools have 18 football wins after 5 weeks. That’s a bigger travesty than the demise of Motown. Then we have town hall meetings and discussions with the President, and everyone else about the dropout rate. You have to get these kids self esteem back. Give them something to be proud of. A band with 10 members and a football team with 28 players, and tell them lets go play Allen. Allen has almost 600 in the band. Give me a break.

ENTERTAINMENT New TRE fares start Oct. 1; weekday service changes, Oct. 4 New fares for the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) will take effect on Friday, Oct. 1 as the second phase of a two-part increase approved by the boards of directors of DART and The T, joint owners and operators of the TRE. The increases were approved in 2009 to cover TRE’s increasing operating and capital costs, and declining sales tax revenues of the two agencies. Fares for DART’s local bus routes, DART Rail and The T’s bus services are not changing Oct. 1. The TRE also will implement weekday service changes beginning Monday, Oct. 4 to use train capacity more efficiently and to improve connections to DART’s Green Line and to The T’s buses. TRE Saturday service changes will not take effect until Oct. 23 due to special Saturday and Sunday TRE schedules during the State Fair of Texas. TRE fare changes • The TRE Single Ride fare for One Zone will increase from $2.50 to $3.50. This fare includes 90 minutes of travel on TRE in the Dallas County zone and a transfer to DART Rail, or one ride on TRE within Tarrant County with transfers to The T’s bus services. The One-Zone for DART riders is from Dallas Union Station to West Irving Station and for T riders it covers from T&P Station to CentrePort/DFW Airport Station. • Single-Ride Regional, or a TwoZone fare, will increase from $3.75 to $5. It covers a single ride on TRE across the full corridor and transfers to The T’s buses and DART Rail. • The TRE One-Zone Day Pass for unlimited TRE service within one zone will increase from $5 to $7 and includes unlimited DART rail and bus services or use of The T’s bus system in Tarrant County.
• The TRE Regional Day Pass that covers unlimited service for two Zones will increase from $7 to 10 for TRE service across the full corridor from Union Station in Dallas to the T&P Station in Fort Worth, plus all of The T’s bus service and DART’s bus and rail service. Other Fare Categories • TRE One-Zone Weekly Pass for TRE will increase from $25 to $35. • TRE One-Zone Monthly Pass will go up from $75 to $100. • TRE One-Zone Annual Pass (12 months for the price of 10) will increase from $750 to $1000. • TRE Regional Two-Zone Weekly Pass will increase from $37.50 to $50. • TRE Regional Two-Zone Monthly Pass will increase will be from $105 to $120. • TRE Two-Zone Annual Pass will increase from $1,050 to $1,200. • There will be no increases for TRE reduced fares. TRE’s fares remain competitive for commuter rail TRE’s new fares remain equal to or lower than comparable fares for commuter rails in the Western part of the United States where travel distances are longer. Most transit agencies across the country have raised fares in the past two years due to increased costs and declining sales taxes and other revenue. The first of TRE’s two-part increase went into effect in October 2009. For details of all fare and schedule changes visit www.DART.org or www.thet.com, or wwwtrinityrailwayexpress.org. Or call customer information for DART at 214.749.1111 and The T at 817.215.8600 for more details.

Rollin With A Brotha’ SMOKING KEVAN BROWNING SPECIAL TO THE ELITE NEWS Welcome to the weekend , baaaaby! Good to see former K104 funny woman Nanette Lee back in her stand up comedy groove! Nanette's featured on Friday and Saturday night, 9P.M. in the "Comedy Night at the Muse" series. That's inside the Clarence Muse Theater, Dallas Kevan Convention Center! Sad to Browning see that another K104 stalwart, the man who replaced me in 1992 on the afternoon, Skip Cheatham and K104 have parted ways. Skip did a lot of good stuff for a lot of people and, my brotha...You deserve a rest, 18 years is a looooong time!.. The Cowboys are off this weekend, ugggg! Th news out of Cowboy camp is that wide receiver Roy Williams, finally got a bit of good natured, although expensive payback from fellow wideout Dez Bryant! Remember the little mini drama in training camp, between the two? Dez refused to carry Roy's pads after a workout session. That's just part of the price NFL rookies pay as initiation. Roy and Dez squashed the beef, but Roy and other veterans let him know that he would have to pick up a meal for his offensive teammates later. That happened Sunday after the Cowboys win over the Houston Texans at Pappas Steakhouse! Dez Bryant Dez was prepared to treat the offense, but Roy also invited the defense for dinner! Final cost before tip???? How does a cool 55,000, thats 5-5 Thousand dollars sound? It would have been a lot cheaper to just carry tha pads, lol. Big ups to Dez personal manager and dalls strongman David Well's who put everything into perspective, saying,"They got the young man, but if not, he would have been washing dishes for a month"! Bryant signed a 12 Million Dollar contract, 8.5 Million guaranteed... He can afford it! Good luck to all the Cowboys... We believe in YOU! Congrats to Laila Ali and husband Curtis Gordon Jr. The happy couple is expecting their second child. Laila says her dad, boxing all time great Muhammad Ali is an excellent Gand Parent who loves to kiss his grands all the time! From the I' Can't Say" department: Bishop Eddie Long???? I can't say and
www.dfwelitenews.com
don't know.....Longs been accused of taking advantage of young men(t least 4 at this point) sexually....The truth will come out! The suit worn by O.J. Simpson when he was famously acquitted of murder is now ready for display at the Newseum in Washington. As previously reported, the custom-tailored $2,000 Ermenegildo Zegna suit was handed over to the museum last spring, intended as part of an overall exhibit about the so-called Trial of the Century. O.J.'s in jail and Lindsey"I violated O. J. Simpson my parole with a failed drug test" Lohan is on the streets, for now. the judge tried to give her 30 days to dry out in jail, but was overruled! When Lohan goes back for a hearing on 10/22, expect some jail time for her own good! ome of you may be familiar with Compass airlines, but we are not. This is probably why they can’t afford to pay their flight attendants enough. I used to think that flight attendants, even though they worked hard were paid...and had it made... readon on...Earlier this month, a flight attendant by the name of Kirsten Arianejad was fired for publicly revealing that she is eligible for food stamps. If you’re not able to feed your family and you’re excited you can get stamps to help out, what are you going to do? Kirsten, maybe theres a spot for you with the NEW SOUTHWEST AIRLINES! In case ya have not heard, Southwest is purchasing Airtran Airlines... What does that mean for DFW residents? How about cheaper domestic and international flights. For example, when Ryan Air gave competition to American and others locally, a trip to montego bay would cost 225.00 a flight... With no real competition, American gets 500 dollars or more for Bryan Gumbel the same 10A-2P flight...That's a 250 percent increase over what was paid a few years ago...Go to www.southwestairlines.com for the full story! Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs this week: Brian Gumbel is 62, Serena Williams 28 and Christina Milian is 27. CITY BEAT State Fair Opens with Annual Festivities and State Fair Classic Game By: Lola Searcy Monday morning press conference at City Hall was the start of the festivities leading up to Saturday’s Prairie View- Grambling game (had to say Prairie View first, my boss is an Alum) capped off a weekend of entertainment, festivities and fun. It all began with the Prairie View Grambling VIP reception held at the City Club located at 901 Main Street Suite 6900 inside the Bank of America Plaza Building. The City Club was filled with hundreds of Prairie View and Grambling alums and some of the most famous and recognizable faces in the Professional Football arena. Mr. Everson Walls, former All-Pro Cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants and Mr. Doug Williams, the first African American Quarterback to win a Super Bowl championship and Super Bowl XXII Most Valuable Player and All-Pro Dallas Cowboys Defensive End and 3X Pro- Bowler, Ed “Too Tall” Jones. Mr. Walls , who is a Grambling Alumni, was on hand to greet the crowd and to promote his book, entitled “A Gift for Ron”, which chronicles the story of his relationship with his former teammate and friend Ron Springs and the decision he made to donate a kidney to Ron. Mr. Williams, also Grambling Alum, brought his Super Bowl MVP trophy he earned in Super Bowl XXII, while playing Quarterback with the Washington
Redskins in 1988. Mr. Jones was flanked by fans wanting to take pictures with him as they joked, “Is Ed “Too Tall Prairie View's Black Foxes Jones” too tall, referencing the recent GEICO commercial Mr. Jones stars in. Mr. Willis Johnson of Soul 73 KKDA served as the Master of Ceremony for the program sponsored in part by McDonalds and The United States Navy. The fun continued with an 8 o’clock tee time at the Country View Golf course in Lancaster, Texas. Friday evening, The Bishop Arts District was the place to be for some smooth sounding jazz with jazz greats Eric Darius and Jeff Golub. Saturday morning the High School Battle of the Bands took place at Lancaster High School’s Beverly Humphrey Stadium. Those in attendance were treated to some high-steppin’ hand clapping, beats by some of the most talented bands in the North Texas area with David W. Carter High School taking home the High School Battle of the

It was time to end the program, but not before we heard touching words from Jordan Blair’s father, Mr. William “Bill” Blair that brought tears from his eyes as he spoke on how wise and courageous Jordan was as a child at 3 years old and the great man he has become today. He also spoke on how his Legend will live on through Jordan Blair. Before the closing, Jordan gave his last words to the congregation. Jordan asked that everyone stand to their feet, take a step to the right, than a step to the left, and to sit

Bands top honors. Amid the rain and dark weather, Singer/songwriter Mario took the Main Stage on the grounds of the State Fair and swooned the ladies brave enough to weather the afternoon rain. The pre-game show kicked off at 4:00 p.m. And then, the moment of truth. The answer to the question Prairie View and Grambling fans have been asking since last year. Who would be the last man standing? 20 unanswered points in the second half ended what spectators had hoped would be the start of Coach Henry Frazier’s and the Prairie View Panthers’ claim to fame again as the Champions of the Annual State Fair Classic. What started out as a fight to the finish ended, with Grambling bringing home another State Fair Classic title. Prairie View’s offense benefited from a blocked punt and the Panther’s first

Church was like small Oaks that had grown into Big Trees.” At the end of the service, the congregation listened to Dr. Vincent Davis as he touched our hearts as he sang “To God Be The Glory For The Things He Has Done.”

score of the night came when Brady Faggard sent a 29 yard field goal through the uprights, giving the Panthers an early 3-0 lead over the Tigers. A 42-yard run by GSU’s Kenneth Batiste gave the Tigers excellent scoring position and freshman Quarterback Anthony Carrothers took it in from 11-yards out to give the Tigers a 7-3 lead. The second half came to a close with the Grambling Tigers leading the Panthers by a score of 14-10. The Panthers wasted no time scoring in the third quarter when kick returner Michael Benson opened the half with a 51 yard run to the Grambling 46 yard line. After a 20-yard run by Fullback Devon Brown, the Panthers’ Quarterback K.J. Black found a wide open Shaun Stephens in corner of the end zone and Kyle Matthews’ PAT was good and the Panthers went ahead 17- 14. Grambling State marched 70 yards in six plays to go ahead by a score of 20-17. And with 4:21 left in the 4th quarter, the long arm of Carrothers hooked up with Wide Receivers Kiare Thompson for a 59 yard strike, and a blocked field goal attempt by Grambling, and Grambling’s Cornelius Walker iced the game with a 66-yard touchdown run. The Panthers of Prairie View totaled 316 total yards offensively, while Grambling State had a combined total of 448. The “Last Man Standing”? Grambling State Tigers by a score of 34-17.
back down.” He then looked at the congregation and said,” When you leave here today, you can’t say that I didn’t say something to move you.” Everyone laughed out loud with joy. But that was Jordan Blair… that is who he is. It wouldn’t have been a success if he hadn’t been himself and real, which is who Jordan Blair is to me. In my opinion, you do not have to be a Bishop, Rev., Dr., Pastor or any of those great titles, man, woman, adult or child, to know the Lord, Love The Lord, Know His Word, Live The Word, and know how to bring a message of knowledge and wisdom to others from God that you can share and give to others. Jordan would like to thank all his family and friends who came out to show love and support; and to those who could not come, but was there for him in Spirit.
Dallas County Schools has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2009. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. The CAFR was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR. The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago, IL, and Washington D.C. The CAFR also won the Association of School Business Officials International’s (ASBO) Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (COE).

The COE was designed by ASBO International to enable school business officials to achieve a high standard of financial reporting, and is the highest recognition for school district financial operations offered by ASBO. By preparing and presenting a CAFR, DCS validated the credibility of our school system’s operations, measured the integrity and technical competence of the business staff and provided professional recognition.
