everyone to recognize their sins and repent. If we ask Jesus to forgive us for our sins, he does. But we have to remember, God wants a changed heart, a repentant heart, a changed person. He doesn’t want a heart that says “I want sin anymore”, he wants a heart that says “I don’t want to sin anymore. Our Beloved Pastor, Elder L.T. Southern Bible Institute Enhances the Tradition of Developing Leaders of Faith From Senior Pastor N.L. Robinson of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas in 1958 to Dr. Herbert Thompson, Senior Pastor of the Illinois Avenue Baptist in 1980; the Southern Bible Institute in Dallas has been graduating leaders of the faith-based community. Pastor Robinson credits his study at Southern Bible Institute as providing him with the knowledge to grow his church. "Southern Bible Institute taught me how to win souls for God by sticking to the word of God," Robinson explained. "I have sent a lot of people to Southern Bible Institute and currently have 4 graduate preachers helping to grow Mount Olive." Southern Bible Institute has provided a biblical background for the more
than six-thousand men and women it has trained since 1927 as pastors, ministry leaders, missionaries, Sunday school teachers and lay people. It has programs Dr. Martin Hawkins Southern Bible Institute in both biblical and theological President studies. Even with the demise of Wall Street (and our 401ks), the thing people will remember most about 2008 was the American presidential election. They'll remember that a self-described "skinny kid with a funny name," with a white mom from Kansas and a black dad from Kenya, made history. However, there were some other notable headlines worth revisiting before ushering in the New Year. January: The 13-3 Cowboys became the first No. 1 seed in the current playoff format to lose in the divisional round. New York 21, Dallas 17. Those teams are now 17-1. Former U.S. track and field athlete Marion Jones is sentenced to 6 months in prison for lying about performance enhancing drug usage and her role in a check fraud scheme Illinois Senator Barack Obama wins the Democratic caucus in Iowa. April: Man accused of trying to cash check for $360,000,000,000. A man has been accused of attempting to pass a $360 billion check, which he claims was given to him by his girlfriend’s mother to start a record business, Fort Worth police said. Charles Ray Fuller, 21, of Crowley, was arrested on April 22 on an accusa-
tion of forgery, police said. July: Oil prices reach record levels pushing gasoline to $4.11 a gallon. August: U.S. Men’s & Women’s Basketball teams take Olympic Gold in China Michael Phelps wins record 8 swimming Gold medals in Bejing September: Forging ashore on Sept. 13, Ike covered the Texas coastline. Thousands of residents fled northward, but Ike followed, initially toward Dallas, then tracking over East Texas before devastating parts of the Midwest. This passage reminds me of what is happening in the United States today. We are not doing what we know to do. 90 percent of all Christians are right here in America. With this recession going on tells me that we who are the people of God are not praying enough. God saves nations because of us, the people of God. You remember when these 3 angels visited Abraham while on their way to destroy Sodom.

Abraham interceded for Sodom because he knew that his nephew Lott was there. Abraham ask God this question” Wilt thou destroy the righteous with the wicked?” and God told him He would not. You see God’s people have power in this world only if they are doing fundamentals of Christianity, being humble, praying to our Creator. Let me show you how, it works if I can. You see, this country without a doubt is the leader of the entire world. Whatever happens to America happens to every other country. We are the leaders of the free world, and the free world market. God allows us to be in that position because we are supposed to be a praying country. Look what happened to the other countries around the world when the stock market fell here in the United States. The stock market in every other country around the globe fell also, Why? Because we are the leaders, the same as Israel was in the Middle East in those days, because they were God’s people. The church was coming through Israel, and that’s where we are today because of Pentecost. God said, “if my people would humble themselves, and PRAY He (God) would heal the land.” God will not only heal the land after we mess-up, but He will keep it healed all the time if we keep ourselves humble and keep praying to our God. By this recession coming upon us causes me to believe that the people of God are not praying, as we should. It seems as though disaster strikes, and that is what’s happening right now. You see, God has a way to make His people get down on their knees again. There are people praying now who have not prayed for a while, and some haven’t prayed, and some that have never prayed. I am sure there will be many people who are coming to Christ now who never
thought about it before, because they were doing well in the world. God can make people do what they ought to do. Look at our U.S. We have men killing little 3 and 4-year-old children. Men leaving their wives and children for no apparent reason, and the mother have to become mother and father. Drugs are taking place of learning, and understanding. Old women are being beaten, raped, and killed. And on and on it goes. When is it going to end? God is going to have to have to stop it himself. A friend from Houston and I was talking about this very same thing over the holidays, and he brought up this topic which gave me the thought of writing about this. If we do not get down on our knees again things are going to get worse. We are not raising our children any more; they come and go as they please, wear any clothing they want to wear and any way they want to wear them. Only in America can 3re world people come here and step in front of people (citizens) of this country. Our government is better to them than they are to the original citizens of this country. God looks at that also. There is a lot of healing needed to take place. God put humble before prayer, did you notice that? We need to get down off of our high horses and come down to the level that God wants us to be. When you are upon that high horse we seem to overlook others who need our help. God wants us to help others who need it. We are God’s stewards. Let’s act the part. Nobody is going to be able to straighten this thing out. Obama and no one else until we get back to Christian basics. Let’s get it done! Let us not forget to read our Bibles and may God bless you real good and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Good Intentions There is a saying which goes, "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions." How true this is for when we sin. It is not usually our intent to hurt and disobey God, but isn't that exactly what happens? Think about the young man sitting in prison for shooting another man. "I never intended to shoot the gun! I just wanted to scare him a little but I guess my anger got the best of me," the man states as he stares at the cold dank walls of his jail cell. Or what about this one? "I didn't intend to be unfaithful, but it just sort of happened!" replied the middle-aged woman to her marriage counselor. Or this: "I walked into the store intending to simply shop, but once I saw the diamond ring and how beautifully it sparkled, well, I figured no one would notice if I slipped it in to my pocket," stated the young woman as she tried to explain her crime of shoplifting to the police officer. I am ready to make You, not sin or my own flesh and selfish desires, Lord of my life. I ask you to forgive me, God, and wash me clean of my sins. I ask You to make me a new creation that is pleasing in your sight, and to show me how to have more strength and wisdom so that I can better recognize evil where it lurks. This I ask in the name of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen."

Hope For The New Year Ephesians 5:15 "Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolHenry Nelson ish, but understand what the Lord's Will is." On Wednesday night at 11:59 pm, over one billion people all across the world will be watching as the "ball" drops in New York City's Times Square. That got me to wondering about the history of the New Year's Eve "ball" and what I discovered was intriguing. The 1st "time-ball" was installed on top of England's Royal Observatory at Greenwich in 1833. After the success of that event, approximately 150 such time-balls were installed around the world but few survive and still work. The tradition is carried on today in places like the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, where a time-ball descends from a flagpole at noon each day and of course once a year in Times Square, where it marks the stroke of midnight. New York actually held a New Year's celebration as early as 1904, but it wasn't until 1907 that they "dropped" an iron and wood ball and adorned with a hundred 25watt light bulbs. It was 5 feet in diameter and weighed 700 pounds. From that date until today, the ball has dropped every year except 1942 and 1943 during the City's WWII "dim-outs". Crowds still gathered in Times Square during those years and greeted the New Year with a moment of silence followed by chimes ringing out from One Times Square. Over the years, the "time-ball" has undergone about 4 redesigns the most recent one was created for the Millennial celebration in the year 2000 by Waterford Crystal. It's a geodesic sphere, six feet in diameter, and weighing approximately 1,070 pounds. It's covered with a total of 504 crystal triangles that vary in size. Each of those triangles has a special designation: Hope for Fellowship, Hope for Peace, Hope for Wisdom, Hope for Unity, Hope for Courage, and Hope for Healing to name a few. The Name of the ball itself is the Star of Hope. Why would they
call the New Year's ball the "Star of Hope?" It is because each New Year is a time for hope. It is a time for opportunity. It is a time for us to grasp hold of our future/ our destiny. Proverbs 24 says,"Wise man has a powerful future waiting for him because he keeps his eyes on wisdom. By contrast, the fool has his eyes on something else his eyes are on the ends of the earth." Proverbs 17:24 tells us that "We have the opportunity to "lay hold of our destiny and future" for this coming New Year. The hope for our future depends upon us. But that hope does not lie in "wishing upon a star," which is essentially what those triangles on the Star of Hope actually are all about. The "hope" for fellowship, peace, wisdom, courage and so on are not based upon promises, but upon a wish for which we would like to see take place in the next year. What's the difference between the two? And how can you avoid becoming like the wise man and get the best God wants to give us? Well, let's take a look at the fool first "The fool's eyes," says Proverbs "wander to the ends of the earth." This verse has always interested me because I can visualize this guy. Years ago, a friend told me about a woman he observed while he was picking berries in a strawberry patch. Her eyes were always wandering across the field looking for the easiest berries to find. And the fool is like that. He is always looking for the easiest berry in the patch. He's always seeking an easy way to get ahead in his life. He is the guy who invests in the future by buying lottery tickets. He cannot seem to stay married because no person is ever good enough. He cannot keep a job because no job is good enough. He cannot stay in one church because no church is good enough. There is always a rainbow waiting for them over the next hill. Their eyes wander constantly to the ends of the earth. They are constantly comparing themselves, their families, their jobs and their potential to something else or to someone else. They are never satisfied and always hoping that the next ring they grab will be the brass ring. In the end, they have done less with their lives than they could have. By contrast, the wise man has two advantages over the fool. 1st he is focused. Proverbs 17:24 says," A discerning man keeps wisdom in view." He is not running all over the place looking for an easy way to live his life. He realizes that

the only lasting success in life comes by sticking to the task at hand. You cannot make a success of life by looking for easy fixes or running pillar to post for solutions. The greatest achievements can only accomplished with consistent, focused effort. That is what the wise man does and he focuses on achieving one central objective. The wise man pursues wisdom in his life? That's right, Wisdom. Solomon who wrote Proverbs was once asked by God to name the one thing he wanted. When Solomon asked for wisdom God responded, in 1st Kings 3:11-12, "Since you have asked for wisdom and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies. I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for both the riches and honor. So that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings." Solomon learned from experience that wisdom gained him an advantage in life. It gave him an edge. And it was that advantage, that edge, that gave him his wealth and power and position. Amen! After all, what is the purpose of wealth if you don't know how to spend it? What's the value of

Continued from Page 6 power if you don't know how to exercise it? What's the use of having a position of influence if you do not know how to use it? Too many people believe that if they only had power, wealth, influence, they'd be happy. And so they struggle and strain to gain those things. but they don't have the wisdom to know what they have right now. And so they are never ever satisfied with what they have. Proverbs 17:24 says, "A discerning man keeps wisdom in view." The 2nd advantage the wise man has over the fool is that he
knows where to look for wisdom. Where did Solomon get his wisdom? He asked God. Why? Because wisdom comes from God. James 1:5 says "If any of you lacks wisdom then He should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." Amen! Now there are other places to look for knowledge and information, and even for what men value as wisdom and those places may seem to have merit. For example, these are examples of men's wisdom: Look before you leap but he who hesitates
is lost. Many hands make light work but too many cooks spoil the broth. Clothes make the man, but we should not judge a book by its cover. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. The wisdom of man has its weaknesses because man's wisdom is always based solely upon what mortal men and women can experience and observe. Our experiences will always be limited and our observations will only be able to see so much. But by contrast - the wisdom of God comes from way far above. There are no limits to His vision. There are no boundaries to what He can see. He knows the Beginning from the End. In Isaiah 46:10 God tells us: "I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please." Amen! You show that you have the wisdom of God when you do what He asks us to do. Remember Jesus once told the parable
about how two men built their homes. Jesus ended the parable by saying in Matthew 7:26, "Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand but everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." Amen! So, here are the ways to ensure a good New Year for 2009. The first is getting to know God's Wisdom. Second, you must do God's Wisdom. Third, you must repeat it constantly. If you hold on to God and to His wisdom and His power then you will succeed in this coming year. And you will lay hold of everything God wants you to have. Granted, it may seem to be that your future may be in doubt at times, but the end result will never really be in question. Now you know why there is hope for the New Year. Happy New Year!

Talent And Potential Don’t Measure up to Character Just Ask the Dallas Cowboys By Jordan Blair Dallas, Texas - Home of the free and home of the Brave - at least that’s what I thought last week when the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Baltimore Ravens. I passed it off as a fluke or just a bad day for the Cowboys. But after witnessing the debockle in Philly, I knew it had something to do with character, intestinal fortitude and leadership. My oldest brother used to say “HOWARD THE COWARD (aka: “PETRIFIED”). Obviously, the Cowboys did not get the message that they were in a game that would ultimately thrust them into the playoffs. Instead, the Cowboys decided to follow their fearless leader, Tony Romo, right out of the playoffs. I don’t know if this is a fair assessment of Romo, but his play in the BIG games has left a lot to be desired. During an interview after the Philly game, Romo’s answers were quite cavalier. Some might say it’s just a game. But is it just a game for the players? When a player is being paid $67 million dollars to play, it becomes more than just a game, it becomes a job and a

responsibility. The fans expect Romo to be an all around athlete on the field – to run, scramble, get the first down, or whatever it takes to fill the gaps. There’s no more room in the league for a quarterback who just stands around looking for the open man. If the quarterback cannot find that open man, do what it takes to move the game forward for the team. The owner and the fans depend on Romo, as the leader, to come through and shine – to help take the team to a victory. It’s not entirely the quarterback’s job to win the game alone - it should be a team effort. The players have a huge responsibility to defend and protect the leader, to keep him from being attacked during the game, which should allow him to perform at a higher level. The coaches are also partly to blame for Sunday’s loss. The
play calling is outdated and should be more strategic. If plays can be read by the opponent, what’s the point? Why not just hand the game over to the opponent on a silver platter, as the Cowboys did on Sunday. Talent and potential don’t measure up to character. Just ask the Dallas Cowboys. This will go down in history as one of the worst losses in Cowboys’ history. We know that Jerry Jones wears many hats as owner of the Dallas Cowboys. But since he goes to the expense of hiring coaches to handle this job, why not step back and let the coaches do the job they are paid to do. Say what you will or may about the Cowboys loss, but Philadelphia played to win. Don’t act like you don’t remember the bad vibes between T.O. and Donovan McNabb. McNabb may have forgiven, but I’ll bet 10 to 1 he hasn’t forgotten. Not only did McNabb come to beat up on the Cowboys, he was probably too happy to make his point to T.O., and he did

exactly that. Jerry has said emphatically that Coach Phillips keeps his job after this season. If Jerry doesn’t fire Coach Phillips, whom should he fire? Should he remove himself from the general manager position? Should Jerry fire T.O., Romo, or the entire team? It’s evident that they have failed miserably. Should Jerry give the entire team another chance? It doesn’t make dollars and cents to fire the entire team, so I guess they get another chance. Fans, what do you think and what kind of fan are you? Are you a die-hard fan, even when the chips are down? Or, do you go whichever way the wind blows? If something doesn’t change, we may be in for another disappointing season under the leadership of Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett in 2009. Will the fans come out next season to the new stadium to see the Cowboys or the new stadium? How long will that last if you don’t put a winning product on the field? Remember, talent and potential don’t equal character and winning. Go figure.

Jazz artist influenced generation of trumpeters By JOHN ROGERS The Associated Press The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Freddie Hubbard, the Grammy-winning jazz musician whose style influenced a generation of trumpet players and who collaborated with greats such as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, died Monday, a month after a heart attack. He was 70. Mr. Hubbard died at Sherman Oaks Hospital, said his manager, fellow trumpeter David Weiss of the New Jazz Composers Octet. Mr. Hubbard had been hospitalized since having the heart attack a day before Thanksgiving. A towering figure in jazz circles, Mr. Hubbard played on hundreds of recordings in a career dating to 1958, the year he arrived in New York from his hometown of Indianapolis, where he had studied at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music and with the Indianapolis Symphony. Soon he had hooked up with jazz legends such as Thelonious Monk, Miles
Davis, Cannonball Adderley and Mr. Coltrane. "I met 'Trane at a jam session at Count Basie's in Harlem in 1958," he told the jazz magazine Down Beat in 1995. "He said, 'Why don't you come over and let's try and practice a little bit together.' I almost went crazy. I mean, here is a 20-year-old kid practicing with John Coltrane. He helped me out a lot, and we worked several jobs together." In his earliest recordings, which included Open Sesame and Goin' Up for Blue Note in 1960, the influence of Mr. Davis and others on Mr. Hubbard is obvious, Mr. Weiss said. But within a couple of years he would develop a style all his own, one that would influence generations of musicians, including Wynton Marsalis. "He influenced all the trumpet players that came after him," Mr. Marsalis told The Associated Press earlier this year. "Certainly I listened to him a lot. ... We all listened to him. "He has a big sound and a great sense of rhythm and time, and really the hallmark of his playing is an exuberance. His playing is exuberant." Mr. Hubbard played on more than 300 recordings, including his own albums and those of scores of other artists. He won a Grammy in 1972 for best jazz performance by a group for the album First Light. As a young musician, Mr. Hubbard
became revered among his peers for a fiery, blazing style that allowed him to hit notes higher and faster than just about anyone else with a horn. As age and infirmity began to slow that style, he switched to a softer, melodic style and played a flugelhorn. His fellow musicians were still impressed. "The sound he gets on just one note. I know he does all the flashy stuff and the high stuff, and it's all great, but ... he'd play 'Body and Soul' on the flugelhorn and it was just that much better again than everyone around him," trumpeter Chris Botti said in an interview earlier this year.
