Do You Know What It Takes To Be Heard By God?

Matthew 6:5-6 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth; they have received their reward Henry Nelson in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. When we pray, we say we want to be heard, but I am not sure many of us really expect God to hear us quite so immediately or so dramatically as all that! In fact, I wonder, do we expect to be heard at all? I wonder do we really expect God to hear and act on our prayers. Why do I say that? Because if you do expect God to hear your prayers, why is it you have ignored the path most clearly laid out in the Bible? If you truly expect that God will hear your prayers, why do you pay so little attention to one of the clearest and most obvious instructions the Scriptures have to give us? All over the world, men and women are trying to do some things that they think will assure that whatever god they pray to will hear them. Some bring gifts of money or offerings of food, expecting that their god will be pleased and will listen to them because he has been bought off. In India, where the temples of the Hindu deities dot every street corner, you will see offerings of food and of flowers

brought every morning by the desperate and the suffering, who keep on hoping that these grotesque figures of wood and stone will hear them. Today I want to tell you of a God who sometimes instructs his followers to forget about offering, their gifts and go do something else before their gifts will be acceptable, before their prayers will be heard. Some people set up rituals of petition that focus on how often prayer is offered. So many of the world’s praying people seem to focus on the volume of their prayers, the quantity of their prayers. Surely if some of them think that if they keep on storming the gates of heaven, they will be heard. Surely if the circuits to God can be jammed He will have to hear me. Today I am going to tell you of a God who tells us to pray in secret and in quiet; of a God who Himself speaks in the still, small voice; of a God who counsels us not to heap up empty words; of a Christ whose model prayer can be recited in only 30 seconds. I am going to tell you of a God who will hear us, in fact, even when we cannot even form our prayers or speak our own minds! What you must do to be heard by God is really so simple; and yet, like everything that matters, it’s profound, it’s lifechanging, and it’s demanding: What does it take to be heard by God? May I suggest that you begin by making certain that you are broadcasting to the right audience? It just stands to reason, that if you want God to hear you than you better be talking to God! God had better be the real audience. Amen! You see, a lot of us are praying to be

heard, but to be heard by someone other than God. You get so caught up in your words, your phrasing; you get so bound up in your self-image, that before long it becomes clear that you are not talking with God. You are talking to other people; you are talking to yourselves; you are trying to make an impression. But if you want to be heard by God, then be sure your prayer is really directed toward Him and not to the wrong audience. Amen! There is a practice in some churches called, "leading in prayer". Now notice the language: it is supposed to be leading others to pray. It is not supposed to be you praying instead of other people. It is not even praying for other people. It is to be leading, encouraging, others to pray. If I lead you to pray, it means I merely suggest some things for which you might want to pray, and then you do your own praying. But what happens to us? We get all caught up in sounding good. We worry about how to use Thou and Thee and Thine, as if God were frozen somewhere in the 17th century. We get all wrapped up in being eloquent and pungent. In my

opinion that misses the point entirely. Listen to the Lord’s warning in Matthew 6:5, "When you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen of men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you". Amen! This week I want to encourage those of you who feel unable to pray because you think you do not know the right words. I just want to tell you that there are no right words except the words that express the heart. Amen! If you want to be heard by God, then make sure God is the audience, and forget about what others may hear; forget about what the traditional prayer language sounds like. Speak to the one audience that counts. Pour out exactly what you feel and you will be on your way to being heard. Now what does it take to be GOD, Continues on Page 7

Why Should You Vote? By: Lola Searcy The November elections are vastly approaching. And much to my surprise, every time the subject of elections and voting comes up, I encounter individuals who are not registered to vote and, if they are, they just don’t. I was visiting with a young woman a few days ago and the subject of the constant political turmoil going on in our country came up. Then she said something to me that really started my blood to boiling. She said, “that’s why I don’t vote”! In utter disbelief and disgust, I had to ask her why she chooses not to vote. Her answer was the usual one that people give, especially people of color. Because “they” (meaning White elected officials ) are going to do whatever they want to do! And my response to her was, “ well, if you vote for the people who best represent you and your issues, they will do whatever you tell them to do! With this being election time, we (Elite News) decided to take a look at 10 reasons why people don’t vote and 10 reasons why people should vote. We will look at the 10 reasons they don’t vote and then we will look at those very same reasons and explain why you should vote. The number one reason why people don’t vote, you guessed it: they don’t think their vote

matters. Some other reasons for voter apathy are: they aren’t registered, they don’t take/make time to vote; they work out of town, they’ve moved; some people think it costs to vote; they are incarcerated; they have a criminal history; they don’t trust elected officials and lastly, they just don’t care. Now, let’s talk about the reasons they don’t vote. The first and most common reason: Most people don’t think their vote matters; the powers that be are going to do whatever they want to do whether I vote or not. The one way you can insure that your rights and your views are being represented is to exercise your right and vote. The change you seek may not come over night, and it my take you exercising your right to vote for years before things are done the way you prefer or the way you think they should be done, but know this, the city you live in, the county you live in, the state you live in, the country you live in will never be the city, county, state or country you would like it to be if you don’t vote! Just think about how long it took for this country to have universal healthcare!? Now, universal healthcare is a right of citizenship in the United States of America. Another reason for voter apathy is: Most people aren’t reg-

istered and they don’t take the time and initiative to register. It only takes a few minutes to become a registered voter and if you are internet savvy, you really don’t have to leave your home to do it. You can find voter registration cards at your local utility offices (places you go to pay your water, electric bills, City Hall, etc.). All you have to do is fill out the required information on the card and put it in the mail box. Postage is paid. Many people live and work in different cities and towns. And they use this as an excuse to not vote. Often times they will say they had to work late and did not get off in time to go vote. Most polling places are open from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm. And, most States, including Texas, have a “Voting Leave Law” that allow employees to leave work to go vote. There is no specified amount of time allotted, but employers must permit absence for the purpose of voting. There is no cost associated with voting. There used to be a “poll” tax, which was a series of laws intended to marginalize Black Americans from politics, but that changed with the ratification of the XXIV Amendment. So, there is no monetary cost associated with voting. A criminal record will not prevent you from voting in Texas.

GOD, Continued from Page 7 heard by God? Once you have established that God is your audience, make sure that all-important audience hears the real you. If you now know to whom you’re addressing your prayer, are you sure it’s really you doing the praying? That is what Jesus is getting at when He says, just before He teaches the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:7, "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him." If you want to be heard by God, make sure that it really is you that God is hearing, and not just words that somebody else taught you! It has been written that the Lord’s Prayer has in it a very dangerous petition "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us." And then, as if that were not already abundantly clear, Jesus adds a verse of explanation, "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." Notice a very small but very powerful word here. The word is "As". Forgive us our sins As we forgive. I call this a dangerous petition, because if you listen and look carefully, this “As” business will really get to you. "As" means "in the same way and "in the same proportions," So if I must pray for God to forgive me in the same way as I forgive others, then I need to look very carefully at the way I forgive, the way I treat others, do I not? If I am going to be heard by God in the same proportions as I hear others, well, then that just might explain why sometimes it feels as though God does not hear my prayers, because some us of sure do like to nurse grudges. Some of us certainly enjoy a juicy scandal and others of us just get all wound up in keeping score of how many times we have been offended or we think, insulted. The thing that keeps many of us from being spiritually powerful is that we are too good, or should I say too "goodygoody". We do not know what it is to be forgiven and we do not know what it is to forgive.

October 8, 2010

Most of us have never gone out and stolen money; you have never sold drugs on the street corner; you have never seduced someone into an illicit relationship and so it seems as though we have not been forgiven of very much, but that can mean that you are also not very forgiving. Amen! You see, I know church folk who think that church is for the good people; that church is for the folks who have their act together; who are well scrubbed and well behaved, and whose idea of a happy hour is 29 choruses of "Kum Bay Ya" around a campfire. Some of you do not have a whole lot of understanding or tolerance of those whose lives are not together. You and I know church folk who feel that church is for the respectable, for the successful and the middle-class, that church is a mutual admiration society for

those who can demonstrate that they are worthy to be there. Identify with the prayer of the little girls who knelt down at her bedside after coming home from church and prayed, "O Lord, please make all the bad people good and all the good people nice!" Amen! I will tell you that church is for those who are being forgiven. Church is for those who have faced their faults and have given them over to the living God. Church is for those who bring their brokenness, their pain, their failure, and lay it all out at the feet of the Master and say, "Take it away, here, take it." Lastly I would like you to ask God to "Forgive your sins as in the same way in the same proportions as you forgive others.” Now you know what it takes to be heard by God. Amen!

Spiritual Wisdom and Understanding Paul wrote his letter to the Colossians to show that Jesus is sufficient to supply every need of the believer. In the opening verses, Paul wrote that the Colossians had a reputation for great faith in Jesus Christ - their love, hope, and hunger for the Gospel was bearing fruit and had been growing "since the day you heard it and understood Geraldine God's grace" Davidson-Hooker (Colossians 1:6). Paul was thankful for their strong faith, but he wanted them to have even more and was committed to praying for their continued growth; "We have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding" (Colossians 1:9). Though God's gracious gift of Salvation is free, the cost is high. We can do nothing to earn or maintain this gift besides believe in His Son; but the faith through which His grace flows is a faith committed to Him without reservation - prepared to follow anywhere He leads and willing to honor Him in all we do. Paul didn't pray for the details of an honoring life; rather, he prayed for what truly produces change: "the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding." We never please God by focusing on specific activities; we please Him by drawing near and allowing His blessings to flow in and through our life. This is a life which bears fruit and is filled with endurance, patience, and thankfulness. The God honoring life is available for us today...regardless of our circumstances. But we must draw nearer to our Heavenly Father and hunger for a better understanding of His will. We must long for His presence and continue to grow in love and faith. God has infinitely more to give and will pour His blessings upon those who continue to seek Him with all their heart. Dear Lord, we pray that You will give us a continued passion for You and an increased hunger for Your Word. We pray that You will strengthen our faith and use our life for Your glory. Heavenly Father, we pray that we will abandon ourselves to You and that You will fill us with the knowledge of Your will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

David W. Carter High School: The Winning Tradition Gone? By Lola Searcy The Carter Cowboys, was once one of the winningest teams in Texas High School football history, finds itself in rather unfamiliar territory this season. In case you haven’t heard, the Cowboys are 1-4. That’s right! The Carter Cowboys have only won (1) game this football season! Finally snapping a 4 game losing streak last week! Now, I know some of you are asking the question, “What is so newsworthy about this?” Many high school football teams in the area are experiencing losing seasons. And that’s true. But, this is the first time in the history of David W. Carter High School, that the school’s football team has gone 1-4, and to be honest, this less than stellar Cowboy football season has Carter alums asking,“ What’s going on with the Carter Cowboys; especially the Cowboys football team? What has happened to the winning football tradition? Let me give you a little history about David W. Carter High School and its football team. Do you remember back in the day when the Carter Cowboys were the Division 5-A High School Football powerhouse? Let me refresh your memory. The Carter Cowboys reached the state semifinals in 1971 (lost to Wichita Falls), 1974 (lost to 12-14 to Mesquite) and 1982 (lost 13-21 to Hurst Bell), but did not make a final game until 1988. You remember that year don’t you? That was the year of the Carter greats like, Jessie Armstead, former NFL linebacker, Derrick Cherry (DT), Clifton Abraham (CB), Le’Shai Matson, Former NFL fullback and Derric Evans (both S). Guided by the legendary Coach Freddie James, the Cowboys won the 1988 5A State Championship with a 31-14 win over Converse Judson. But before the State Championship in 1988, Carter had tremendous

www.dfwelitenews.com

players in 1973 like Quarterback Joe Rusk, Danny Davis, Skip Jefferson, O.C. Jackson, Patrick Martin, just to name a few. A lot of these former players sent their sons back to play for Carter. Skip Jefferson sent his son Clifford Jefferson, Jr. to play for the infamous Carter Cowboys, that went on to become a standout player at the University Of Notre Dame. The homes and areas surrounding Carter is one of the wealthier parts of Oak Cliff, although in the beginning, Carter’s student body was almost completely White. And then, in the 1980’s the school became predominantly African American. The surrounding neighborhood remains solidly middle class. So, what happened to all of the prime students and athletes Carter used to have? What schools are those students attending now? The feeder pattern for Carter High School consists of Adele Turner, Mark Twain, Vanguard and T.G. Terry Elementary schools which all feed into W.H. Atwell Middle School, Birdie Alexander, Umphrey Lee, Ronald McNair and Martin Weiss Elementary Schools, feed into D.A. Hulsey, all of which feed into D.W. Carter High School. These Elementary and Junior High Schools are well represented academically and athletically. So where do these students ultimately end up? During these times, definitely not at Carter. So, should we be looking at the Head Coach and Coaching staff failures, or is it recruitment failure to keep these kids in that same feeder patter. Or is it because of the tradition Carter has built over the years, broken down? We don’t know the answers to all of these questions, but maybe the Alumni does? Alumni, where ya at? Maybe if you step back in in larger numbers,

Ron Washington should be manager of the year By Roger B. Brown KKDA Sports Director It’s Time! That has been the Rangers’ team slogan all season long. However, “it’s about time’’ may have been a better fit. For the first time since 1999, the Rangers have qualified for the playoffs. It has been a long, dry spell for sure. And with everything that has gone on this season, it has been some kind of ride along the way. The road to here has indeed been one bumpy ride. “I have a great bunch of guys and a great coaching staff, and we kept the focus on the field, ’’ said Rangers manager Ron Washington. That was easier said that done. From the get go, the Rangers were challenged when Washington admitted to a failed drug test, during spring training. Washington actually failed the test in August of 2009, but the Rangers kept it in house. But it was leaked to the media during spring training and the pressure was on the organization to get rid of Washington. However, being the straight –forward kind of person that he is, Wash, as he is fondly referred to by the players, apologized before the entire organization in the clubhouse. Wash owned up and made no excuses for his actions. And when all was said and done, every one of the players walked by Wash and gave him a

PAGE 8

hug in full support of their manager. Soon after the Wash episode, the Rangers were hit hard again when likely most valuable player Josh Hamilton also had some explaining to do. Hamilton, a recovering alcoholic, had fallen off the wagon and some lewd pictures about that fall hit the internet. Once again, that only was the beginning of a long and tumultuous ride. Then, after a dismal spring training, it appeared as if management was setting Wash up to fail when team president Nolan Ryan predicted the team would win at least 92 games this season. ”We set expectations high for ourselves at spring training,” Wash said. We expected to win the west (division) and we did. There was never a doubt in my mind that we were ready to make this step. “We developed an attitude and commitment around here and it all worked. We expected to be where we are, and we have set a standard around here for years to come.” “I do know how I like to see baseball played, and I tried to emphasize that when I arrived here in Texas. And the guys finally bought into it. I’m very happy for my team and for everybody involved. We’ll do what we have to do to keep this thing moving forward from this point on.” The Rangers have improved in each of Washington’s four years. And now they find themselves 11 wins away from doing the impossible…winning a World Championship. In the process, Washington has had to change the identi-

Rangers Manager Ron Washington & Dr. William "Bill" Blair ty of the team. They have shifted from a big-bopper, bash-like team to a more all-around team. That can beat teams in a variety of ways. “We wanted to become a complete team,’’ Wash said. “We wanted to show patience at the plate, be sound defensively, and solid on the hill (pitching). That was our purpose when we took this thing over. Right now, we’re that type of team. We still have some deficiencies, because we’re still a work in progress.’’ Although the Rangers were hit hard by injuries throughout the season, they maintained a ‘no excuse’ attitude. And it was that same type of attitude that helped them to not lose focus in August when the team went into bankruptcy. All the while, they were in the middle of a heated division race. Not even the standard old excuse of the hot Texas summer heat could get in the way of this team maintaining its focus on winning the division

www.dfwelitenews.com

title. “Everybody had a part in this season,’’ Wash said. “I appreciate the job Nolan and Jon (Daniels, the Rangers general manager) did in putting this team together.’’ I have been here four years and we want this to be only the beginning of things to come. “That is just the construction of how baseball goes. The more you do something, the better you should get at it. or you won’t be around. Once you go through it, you begin to understand when you can and when you can’t and when you should and when you shouldn’t. That’s baseball.’’ Now, the Rangers have one last hurdle to overcome. They have never had any postseason success. In fact, they are the only franchise that has never won a playoff series. In their previous three trips to the playoffs, they have come against the New York Yankees, baseball’s pre-eminent and most storied franchise. So why would anyone think things would be any different this time around? “I know there were a lot of questions about us dwindling in the Texas heat, but we changed that perception,” Wash said. “Until we can prove that we can get out of the first round, there will be doubters about that too. My guys will prove all of the skeptics wrong just like they have all season long. Once we get to the playoffs, we’ll see what happens. “Our goal now is to win 11 games. We want to win the World Series. That’s our sole purpose.’’

Barber Shop Sports Talk with Leon Simon I was asked the other day about the poor tackling in the NFL. With high salaries and short rosters there is no premium put on hitting. That said, safeties are generally some of Leon Simon your heavy hitters, but that’s one of two positions that don’t stay in the league long. Hard hitting safeties and the traditional power runner, are usually short lived careers in the league. Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater had average careers length wise. Both were exceptional hitters, but as a rule those type careers come to a halt early. Concussions, neck and head injuries

October 8, 2010

are the culprits. Down through the years safeties gave the league the WOW Factor. Jack Tatum even wrote a book “They Call Me the Assassin.” Unfortunately he ended the career of Darrell Stingley with a vicious hit. The Raiders Mantra was “running across the middle of the Raiders zone was like running through the forest at night, no telling what you might run into.” That was part of the job description for safeties “knock out artist” make the middle of the field off limits. A price came with that type play. Cliff Harris, ex- Cowboys safety’s retirement was caused by too many concussions and neck injuries. Darrin Woodson‘s retirement was aided by like injuries. Believe me both guys made the middle of the field a less desirable place by their presence. Troy Polamalu (Pittsburg Steelers) Bob

Sanders (Colts) are two of the best in the league, I think. Troy spent most of last year with injuries he suffered through hard hits. Bob Sanders will miss most of this year and he missed all of last year with torn bicep muscles. Power runners’ careers are even shorter and end in even more devastation. Earl Campbell, and Christian Okoye these type runners create great excitement and great collisions. There are different types of power runners. The collision, type and the strong runner, just too hard to bring down – Jim Brown was the latter. Brown never looked for a collision. Brown would pull out of your grasp. On a 5yd touchdown run against the Cowboys, Brown was hit 4yds. behind the line of scrimmage, and Cowboy linebacker Dave Edwards said he

www.dfwelitenews.com

thought he had made a good hit, but he thought his finger nails were coming out as Brown pulled away and into the endzone. I’ve seen Earl really dish out some punishment, with those huge thighs, but look at Brown now and look at Earl. Jim has to be 10years older, but you can’t tell. Better yet, Tony Dorsett played around the same time as Earl yet Tony looks like he could be Earl’s son. Today’s Backs Marion Barber, (Cowboys), Brandon Jacobs (Giants) both collision runners. This could be the last year for both and neither one is 30 years old. Both had about 2 yrs of good productive football. I’m not trying to say there’s not a place for that type back, because there is. It’s just not a position of longevity.

Rollin With A Brotha’ SMOKING KEVAN BROWNING SPECIAL TO THE ELITE NEWS Welcome to the weekend, baaaby! Ahhh the cool of fall has finally set in and by the time this column hits the stands, I'll be back from Jamaica. This time my trip is different..It's not about me and my baby getting away.... It has Kevan nothing to do with Browning meeting up with family from all over the U.S in my favorite spot. It's not a reward for my oldest daughter being... my oldest daughter, nor for my youngest graduating high school and turning 18... All worthy reasons for a Jamaican getaway, but this trip will be different... I'll be traveling solo/internationally without my running buddy, love of my life and wife of 20 plus years,Ms. Sheila B! Now don't think I wanted to solo, it just worked out this way. The reason I need this beach/breeze time is that I am overwhelmed... As we Baby Boomers grow older, so do our parents. My Mother, whom I dearly love is going thru a rough season, having been diagnosed with Dementia. I saw the tears on the reality shows as Keisha Cole Keisha Cole and Terell Owens dealt with their loved ones, suffering from Dementia and Alzheimers at home with their families. Little did I know that a few years later, I'd be in their shoes. My trip is a reward, a needed gift to refresh my mind and spirit, as I prepare for the ongoing interaction with Dementia/ Alzheimers. When Sheila and I were in Jamaica last November for a job I was hired to do for American Airlines and the Jamaican Tourist Board, I never would have thought about coming back without my baby... Today, I thank Mrs. B for recognizing my pain and exhaustion. 3 or 4 days on the beach will help a brotha re-boot! If you are a caregiver for Senior parents or relatives, remember my favorite saying... "You can give without loving, but you can't love without giv-

ing"? Well I am adjusting that for all my loving fellow caregivers... "You can give until you drop, but if you take some time for yourself, you won't drop from your giving". If you are overRon Washington whelmed by this horrible disease and the toll it's taking on someone you love, visit http://www.alz.org/greaterdallas for support! Well did ya miss the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday??? I did, especially after the 1st big win of the season... Congrats to Manger Ron Washington and his Texas Rangers on winning the AL West! We are 2 games into the playoffs against the Tampa Bay Rays... Game 3 is this Saturday, 4 pm at the Ball Park in Arlington! This Sunday, I think we can take Vince Young and Felix Jones the Tennessee Titans... Vince has the 2,000 yard man (Chris Johnson) in the backfield and that should challenge the Boyz running backs, especially Felix Jones. In the 2008 draft, the boys had a choice between Johnson, a true super star, Rashard Mendenhall, who's taken over the RB duties for the Pittsburg Steelers and Felix, who showed flashes last year! I love the Cowboys depth at RB, but it's time for somebody to step up and become the man! Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs this week: Archbishop Emeritus Desmond TuTu is 79, Diahann Carroll is 75, Rev. Jesse Jackson is 69. Clifton Davis is 65, Robert "Kool" Bell is 60, Toni Braxton 42 and India Arie is 35! Thanks for Rollin With A Brotha in The "Elite News" Toni Braxton and online at www.dfwelitenews.com

CITY BEAT Who’s Telling the Truth? Eddie Long or Accusers By: Bettye Williams As I bring you this update about Bishop Eddie Long, I can not help but keep asking myself, “Who’s Telling the Truth?” I am sure you too would like to know that answer. Many attended the services held at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia including thousands of individuals, a fire truck, an ambulance, about five satellite trucks, three media tents and the Channel 2 news came out to listen as Bishop Eddie Long‘s address to the congregation. Bishop Eddie Long is still showing his face and not hiding from the shame of what he has been accused of. Bishop Long attended services as usual and stated that he was “not going to be pulled into a street fight.” At service on Sunday, Bishop Eddie Long said he had no hate for anyone; then asked his congregation to turn to the book of Job, reading a passage which states, “Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more.” Bishop Long also stated in the service that, “In times of challenge, there are several things that come out, your faith will be strengthened or weak-

ened. My faith is being strengthened. We’re here today and every Sunday morning. And I’ll be here next week. It’s a time when you see the veil dropped and you see who’s with you and who’s not with you. As a pastor, I want to help everybody.” Lastly, he made it clear, “I have never in my life portrayed myself as a perfect man, but I am not the man being portrayed on television - that’s not me. That is not me.” Even though he made those statements, Bishop Long made no reference to the allegations in his sermon on Sunday, but stated that he had no hatred for those who have attacked him. Bishop Eddie Long involved in a scandal where four young men have alleged in a civil suit that Long coerced them into having had sexual acts by rewarding them with trips, cash, cars, and other monetary gifts. The four boys stated that Bishop Long allegedly, took advantage of young teen boys, sexually, who came to him with hopes of finding a friend and some guidance. Long continues to deny any involvement with these boys. On Friday, he described himself as being, “under attack” to supporters in conference but, only time will tell.

There are rumors that Bishop Eddie Long’s ex-wife alleges he abused her. The ex-wife of Bishop Eddie Long, Dabara S. Houston, claimed in court documents that Long abused her during their marriage. Houston said that Long physically abused her when she was seven-and-a-half months pregnant with their child. Houston also states that she was fearful of Long's "violent and vicious temper." She also states that she ran away from Long by leaving their home with her son to get away for her own safety. My, have times changed since growing up in the church when you never heard these type things about the minister - but always preaching. As a child and young youth, I never heard any accusations about wrong doings from a minister. I grew up thinking preachers were worshiped and just like God. They did not sin, lie, use profanity, nor did they look at other women in a lustful way. I grew up thinking preachers could do no wrong or say anything wrong. But I lived to see and hear different throughout the years about some ministers. Once upon a time you only heard things like this about White preachers;

now the tables are turning to our black churches. As many rumors as there are circulating, comes many questions. Did Bishop Eddie Long commit the acts that he is being accused of with any of those young men before they reached the age of consent? What is going on with our influential Black spiritual Leaders? Should our local community be concerned about their pastors? How would you know if your (yes your) minister is on the down low or doing the things that Eddie Long has been accused of? Would there be any signs to look for? What are the signs? Are the Eddie Long accusations based on homosexuality or pedophilia? Would you stand behind your minister if the same accusations were made about him/her or would you desert and run until you find out the truth? Remember that Bishop Long headed the protest against gay activists and homosexuality. Could this be a back lash? Has the gay sex claims against Bishop Long damaged his faith? I don't know the answers to these questions. But I'm sure that time will reveal all secrets. Who is telling the truth? The four boys or Bishop Eddie Long?

That used to be the case, but today, if you have served time in prison and you are no longer on probation or parole, you can exercise your right to vote. Many people cite a distrust and dislike of elected officials as their reason for not voting. All I can suggest is you do your homework. Take the time to learn about the individuals running for office. See if they share your views when it comes to certain issues. If you vote along party lines, vote for the candidate of your party. Lastly, if you are one of those persons who doesn’t vote because you just

don’t care, shame on you! Especially if you are of African-American descent. Too many people gave their lives so that you could have the right to vote. Dr. King gave his life and risked the lives of his wife and 4 young children so that you and I could have a say in the political process. Don’t dishonor his memory and that of so many other African Americans with your “I don’t care”; they’re just going to do what they want to do attitude! Get out and vote! There could never have been a President Barack Obama, without the right to vote!

CARTER, Continued from Page 7 maybe we could turn this around at Carter and make a difference. One former Carter Alumni from the Class of 1975, Publisher of this newspaper and Dallas County School Board Trustee, Jordan R. Blair, had this to say. “If you are a former member of Carter High School you need to step up to the plate and give back to make a difference”. “Someone helped get to where you are

today”. “We are standing on the shoulders of those who came before us. Let’s get back involved and we can help turn Carter around”. Not only athletically, but academically! Go Carter Cowboys, we are still with you! The Carter Cowboys take on the Seagoville Dragons on Thursday maybe they can turn things around with a win against Seagoville!
