The New Year Is Coming Ephesians 5:15; “Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's Will is.” In a few short days at Henry Nelson 11:59 pm, over one billion people, all across the world will be watching as the “ball” drops in New York City’s Times Square. That got me to wondering about the history of the New Year’s Eve “ball” and what I discovered was intriguing: The 1st "time-ball" was installed on top of England’s Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1833. After the success of that event, approximately 150 such time-balls were installed around the world. But few survive and still work. The tradition is carried on today in places like the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC; where a time-ball descends from a flagpole at noon each day and of course, once and a year in Times Square, where it marks the stroke of midnight. New York actually held a New Year’s celebration as early as 1904, but it wasn’t until 1907 that they “dropped” an iron and wood ball and adorned with a hundred 25-watt light bulbs. It was 5 feet in diameter and weighed 700 pounds. From that date until today, the ball has dropped every year except 1942 and 1943 during the City’s WWII “dim-outs”. Crowds still gathered in Times Square during those years and greeted the New Year with a moment of silence Followed by chimes ringing out from One Times Square. Over the years, the “time-ball” has undergone about 4 re-designs. The most recent one was created for the millennial celebration in the year 2000 by Waterford Crystal. It’s a geodesic sphere, six feet in diameter, and weighing approximately 1,070 pounds. It is covered with a total of 504 crystal triangles that vary in size. Each of those triangles has a special designation: Hope for Fellowship, Hope for Peace, Hope for Wisdom, Hope for Unity, Hope for Courage, Hope for Healing, etc. The Name of the ball itself is The Star of Hope. Why would they call the New Year’s ball the “Star of Hope?” It is because each New Year is a time for hope. It’s a time for opportunity. It’s a time for each one of us to grasp a hold of our future and our destiny. Proverbs 17:24 says,” Sensible people keep their eyes glued on wisdom, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.” Amen!

www.dfwelitenews.com

What we see in this verse is that we have the opportunity to grab hold of our destiny and future for this coming New Year. The hope for our future depends upon us but that hope does not lie in “wishing upon a star.” The “hope” for fellowship, peace, wisdom, courage and so on are not based upon promises, but upon a wish for what we’d like to see take place in the next year. Proverbs 17:24 is saying that the Wise man has a powerful future waiting for him because he keeps his eyes on wisdom. By contrast, the fool has his eyes on something else; His eyes are on the ends of the earth. What is the difference between the two? How can you become like the wise man and get the best God wants to give us? Well, let us take a look at the fool first. “The fool’s eyes,” says Proverbs “wander to the ends of the earth.” This verse interested me because I can visualize this guy. I remember hearing a story once about a woman who was picking strawberries in a strawberry patch. She would no sooner pick one and then she would look up and see another strawberry a couple of rows away and off she would run to pick that berry. Then she would look up and see another berry a few plants away and off she’d go, again and again and again all across the patch. And by doing this she filled one bucket in the same time a normal person could fill many. Her eyes were always wandering across the field looking for the easiest berries to find. This is what the fool is like He’s always looking for the easiest berry in the patch. He is always seeking an easy way to get ahead in his life. He is the guy who invests in the future by buying lottery tickets. He cannot seem to stay married because no person is ever good enough. He cannot keep a job because no job is good enough. He cannot stay in one church, because no church is good enough. By contrast, the wise man has two advantages over the fool. The first advantage is he is focused. Sensible people keep their eyes glued on wisdom. The wise man is not running all over the place looking for an easy way to live his life. He realizes that the only way to achieve success in life is sticking to the task at hand. You cannot build a championship team in a day. A single sales meeting cannot transform a company into a success. A weekend marriage or parenting seminar cannot completely heal a struggling family and one sermon cannot set a church right or remove its troubles. You cannot make a success of life by looking for easy fixes. The greatest achievements can only be accomplished with consistent, focused effort and that is what the wise man does. He focuses on achieving one central objective. The main pursuit of the wise man is

God is the parent of all religions.” Dr. Hollie said and Bishop McGriff agreed. “We are all brothers and sisters, regardless of our beliefs,” McGriff said. “He is one of those individuals who has reached out literally all across our community. FAVORITE SONG Running For My Life

“Three Aspects of Sanctification” For one to be Sanctified means to be set apart by God. There are 3 aspects of the believer’s sanctification. (1) Every believer is set apart at salvation POSITIONALLY. (2) It is God’s will that every believer will continuously set himself apart to HOLY LIVING. (3) There is a final complete setting apart of every Christian when the LORD COMES Gene Turner AGAIN. Out of the Eyes The first aspect of of a Layman Sanctification is Positional Sanctification. Positional Sanctification is one of the things, which accompany salvation. This is not the same as regeneration, although it simultaneously occurs with it. “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and Sanctification, and redemption (I Cor. 1:30).” Because of the Fathers work we are intimate with Jesus Christ. In this passage of scripture Paul contends that all the riches of Salvation exist in Jesus Christ. What Paul is telling the Corinthians is

that they are and all of what they are to Jesus Christ. We should not think more highly of ourselves and glory in our human abilities. The abilities that each one of us as Christian’s posses is because we are in Christ. The scripture speaks wisdom. Wisdom is not merely the acquisition of intellectual skills but the gaining of spiritual discernment based on the wisdom of God as demonstrated in the Cross. The righteouness here is applied to the Christian’s account the moment he believes (Roman 5). Sanctification means sanctified in Jesus Christ. This explains the work of Christ in a Christian as opposed to that which He does for the believer in justification. The word Redemption undergirds all the processes up to this point. The redemptive work of the Lord opened-up the way for God to extend His Grace to sinful man and grant unto him the benefits such as wisdom, righteousness, and sanctification. Sanctification means a growing process for HOLY LIVING DAILY. SECOND ASPECT: It is the will of God that each Christian continuously set himself apart to Holy Living “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God (2 Cor. 7:1).” This scripture speaks of a two-fold

procedure: “One must turn away from sin, and turning toward God. Paul’s meaning here is “perfecting Holiness”. He is telling the Corinthians they are to have nothing to do with paganism. They are to make a clean break with everything behind them and give themselves over to God alone. This is what we are supposed to do under the Banner of Sanctification. We should get better at it as each day passes. THIRD ASPECT: The final setting apart when Christ comes again. “And the Lord make you to increase an inbound in love toward another and toward all men, make you shout in your tracks. Because if you are a Christian, this means even though you are not all of what you should be, or you are not, as far along in your Sanctification as you ought to be, but the word “unblamable” means that God is going to give you a glorified body regardless, because you are a believer. So, Glorification should be your assurance of your Salvation. When you become saved you should be assured of the fact that one day Christ will return and glorify you that you may be with Him eternally. Let us not forget to read our Bibles, and may God bless you real good and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Award Winning Host/Producer Over the past year Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas has experienced an organization-wide 24.5% GROWTH in membership!! No amount of strategic planning, projecting and budgeting could have prepared BGCD for the influx of kids to our Clubs over the past 12 months. In light of the economic challenges faced by our Country and the impact it is having on so many families, the need for quality after-school programs has increased dramatically. During this economic crisis, BGCD has achieved remarkable success with a program called “Project Learn.” Project Learn is our after-school program that takes classroom curriculum in the schools and then applies the concepts to various programs and activities at the Club. The results speak for themselves: • 64% of members receiving tutoring, improved their grades from C or less to B or greater. • 100% of the seniors that participated in Project Learn graduated. • 93% were admitted into college and 7% joined the military. Because now you have given the correct answer to the question that is of the utmost concern in our world today. Such as, “why so Pastor much domestic violence”? “Magi Confirm Messiah’s Birth” The “Magi C o n f i r m Messiah’s Birth” was our church lesson for Sunday, taken from Matt.2:79;15-23. The l e s s o n brought to the forefront a Eld. Lloyd time line for T. Morgan the birth of Christ. Often we see the “Naivety scene” and the Magi are there around the manger with the shepherds giving gifts to the baby Jesus, but the Magi could not have been there according to the time they said they saw the star, the distance they traveled to find him and the fact that they found the “Child” Jesus in a “house” not a stable. The slaughter of the children two years and under indicates that at least a year or more had passed since his birth. Joseph was warned to take the child into Egypt to save him from

Herod and later told when Herod was dead. This was a fulfillment of the words of the Prophets; God knows how to preserve those that are his. The bread of life was delivered by our esteemed pastor Eld.L.T.Morgan from the subject “He brought them out to take them in” from Deut.8:1-6. This is Moses final discourse to this new generation of Israelites about to possess the promise land. Moses tell them their wandering was so that God could humble them, and prove them, to know what was in their hearts, whether they would keep his commandments or not. God always seek to prove us before his greatest blessings are be stored upon us. It is not enough to simply go to church and clap our hands and God open the windows of heaven and pour out his blessings on us, he expect us to walk in obedience to his word. It is misleading to say that we can praise our way out of every situation, but we can obey our way out. Happy New Year! God Bless

GREGG A. SMITH’S “BACKYARD SPOTLIGHT” The Annual Red & White Christmas Gala and Toy Drive

January 1, 2020

By Roman Ross It’s not often that organizations that don’t get a lot of publicity go that extra mile for the children. If they’re not being highlighted by the local TV stations then they don’t really feel the need to help those who can’t really help themselves. Well, I’m glad to report that I know of one such business that gets no glory or headlines but gives that 110 percent to make sure as many children as possible, can have a very Merry Christmas. This business has given out toys every Christmas week for years. That business is R. L. Griffin’s Blues Palace II at 3100 Grand Avenue in Sunny South Dallas. The “Right Reverend of the Blues” R. L. Griffin and our own Gregg A. Smith created an event that has helped countless children enjoy a Christmas that would otherwise be joyless simply by getting their long time customers to donate a toy when they came to the show on December 20th. I had to give a toy. Whoever gets my little speedster will be driving their Mom crazy come Christmas morning. My children are all grown but my youngest daughter is expecting and I could only think that this was an excellent opportunity to get back in the Christmas spirit. This event starred the “Good Loving Will Make You Cry” star Mr. Carl Marshall along with Curtis Traylor, Big Joe, Lee Roy Ward (Wish She Woulda Called”), Big CharlesYoung, T. J. Hooker Taylor (Your Babies Need a Daddy) Legacy, Gregg A. Smith (Romeo and Jez”), R. L. Griffiin (“Reconsider”) and other local talent like Captain Jack. I had expected a larger crowd with this type of Blues talent performing, but more than enough people showed up to help with the Toy Drive. It was a good show. T. J. Hooker Taylor, wasn’t listed on the program, but he showed up and showed out singing some of his father’s (the late Johnny Taylor) songs. Curtis Traylor is not a name I knew but he sang some moving tracks from his latest album. My friend Lee Roy didn’t sing his song from his latest album while I was there but he, Big Joe and Chester Henderson, sang some familiar tunes that had myself and my date, the lovely Marsha Bables, bobbing our heads and singing out loud with the Blues Palace Band. As always, there was a great buffet

served and the crowd enjoyed having a little food to help with the BYOB drinks at their table. I left before Gregg took the stage but I got the opportunity to witness a Christmas Engagement as Captain Jack kind of interrupted the flow of Carl Marshall’s performance to propose marriage onstage to his longtime companion Ms. Pat Hedrick. He told me to make sure I took a picture of it and I told him he needed to hit a knee while proposing. It made for a great picture. I guess getting a contract with CDS Records opened up a new world and he needed to include his lady in the blessing. Gregg and R. L. Griffin gave out the toys on Wednesday Dec. 23rd and made quite a few children happy. I wish more of the customers had given toys because R. L. put a great deal of the presents on his dime, but maybe next year, as things get better, he and Gregg can expect more help from the crowd. Many thanks to Gregg and R. L. for putting this type of event on for the children. It always warms the heart when you know that people who don’t have to do this, do it anyway. I know that Gregg and R. L. will be blessed and highly favored for their actions and I look forward to reporting on this event next year. Images for this story can be found at: www.photosandadsbyroman.ning.com

Wisdom. Solomon who wrote Proverbs was once asked by God to name the one thing he wanted. When Solomon asked for wisdom God responded. 1st Kings 3:11says, So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people and have not asked for a long life or riches for yourself or the death of your enemies 1st Kings 3:12 says, I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding mind such as no one else has ever had or ever will have! Solomon learned from experience that wisdom gained him an advantage in life. It gave him an edge and it was that advantage, that edge that gave him his wealth and power and position. The 2nd advantage the wise man has over the fool is that he knows where to look for wisdom. Where did Solomon get his wisdom? He asked God. Why? Because wisdom comes from God. James 1:5 says “If you need wisdom if you want to know what God wants you to do ask him, and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking.” Amen! Now there are other places we can look for knowledge and information, other places we can look for what men value as wisdom and those places may seem to be logical. But any other source than God will eventually lead to contradictory advice because it will be based upon man’s experience. The wisdom of man has its weaknesses because man’s wisdom is always based solely upon what mortal men and women can experience and observe and because of this our experiences will always be limited and our observations will only be able to see so much. By contrast the wisdom of God comes from far above. There are no limits to His vision. There are no boundaries to what He can see. He knows the Beginning from the End. In Isaiah 46:10 God tells us,”Only I can tell you what is going to happen even before it happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish.” Amen! When we look to God for His wisdom in

our lives we are not only better off than the fool we are better off than anyone else because we have an advantage others don’t have. We have access to the Wisdom of God in our lives and we show that we have the wisdom of God when we do what He asks us to do. Remember Jesus once told the parable about how two men built their homes Jesus ended the parable by saying “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.” Matthew 7:26 says”but everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24 says, “We show that we have gained God’s wisdom when we do what He asks us to do.” That’s why it is so important that we keep exposing ourselves to the Bible; in Church, in Sunday school, in studies and in our personal devotions. The more of God’s wisdom we can get into us, the greater our advantage in this world. So, here are the ways to ensure a good New Year for 2010 #1 You must know God’s Wisdom #2 You must do God’s Wisdom #3 Repeat Gods wisdom. Do this again and again and again and as often as you can. The key thing to remember is that both as individual Christians and as a church is that you have access not only to God’s wisdom but also to His power. Your ability to create a great New Year for our lives is not limited to what we know. God’s power and His working in our lives is the single most important advantage we have. Amen! If you hold on to God and to His wisdom and His power then we will succeed in this coming year. We will be able to grab a hold of everything God wants us to have. It may seem that our future may be in doubt at time, but in the end it will never really be in question. May God bless everyone and have a happy New Year everyone. Amen!

SMU finally got back to the bowl scene with a 45-10 victory over Nevada. It appear that the Mustangs Got a coach that knows how to get it done. The Mustangs hopefully are on Leon Simon their way back to the pony express days, the days of Eric Dickerson, Charles Waggoner, and Craig James. SMU was the last School to receive the death penalty, and has never recovered. I think the NCAA need to be revamped ,or get a new direction. The bylaws they have now are so one sided that it seem like the constitution of some of the old Soviet block countries. And you wonder how can an organization in a free nation, one that has made it known that they represent the citizen of the world that has no representation. A country that fought in Vietnam, Iraq, and Iran under the guise of human rights, can let an organization take advantage of young men and women the way the NCAA has. Through athletics billions of dollars are made, new dorms are built, student enrollment goes up etc. What’s wrong with that you say, nothing, if you’re doing it the old fashion way free enterprise. They’re doing it with slave labor, they can take a young man or women and fill an arena as large as one hundred thousand seat capacity and not pay a dime for labor. The guys that sell hot dogs, park cars, take tickets cut the yard make more money than the ones that everyone comes to see play. they go to these young men homes promise them a free education. They don’t tell them or they parents that if the coach see their son standing at a bus stop on a cold Rainey day its against NCAA rules for that coach to pick him up. Even worst if the young man was walking and didn’t have bus fare the coach would be in violation if he gave him bus fare. Two years ago the University of Michigan made 2.5 million on ticket sales every Saturday they have a home football game, I haven’t said anything about parking, hot dogs, caps, tee shirts etc. How about this a young man headed to the stadium to play a game on his way he see 50 different peo-

Other dignitaries on hand were Dallas City Council Member Sheffie Kadane, Dallas County Schools Board President Larry Duncan, Kay Fullylove (KKDA radio personality), Willis Johnson, Sophia Dowe, and Constable Derrick Evans. Bishop McGriff and Dr. Karen Hollie McGriff knew exactly what they were doing crossing all lines to bring people together that would normally not cross each other’s path. They have a promising future ahead of them that will not only benefit their relationship but will have a tremendous effect on our community and throughout this country and over the world. This truly was a magical night for relationships. God Bless Bishop and Dr. Karen McGriff. You truly understand what it means to bring people together. “Everybody should love everybody and understand their doctrine and religion. If they did, there would be more peace in the world,” said Bishop McGriff. Truly a match made in Heaven.

TMZ.com is reporting that 18year-old Taja Riley was granted a temporary restraining order against her father -- claiming the 43-year-old abused her and her older sister by "stomping, punching and bashing them" in his L.A. home on DEC. 23. Joe Jackson has gone from brilliant mastermind to quirky senior citizen. Here's the latest! Court records have revealed that an attorney handling Joseph Jackson's bid to receive a monthly stipend from his son's estate has had his law license placed on probation for two years. The reprimand is not related to his representation of Jackson, but last week's decision by the California Supreme Court will leave Brian Oxman under scrutiny as he argues the Jackson family patriarch

Superintendent Paul Wyman Pope 1932-2009 — “A faithful man, who can find? A just man walks in his own integrity, and his children are blesses after him.” Proverbs 20:6-7. On June 7, 1932, in the country town of Ore City, Texas, Paul Wyman Pope was born to Hosea and Delilah Pope. He grew up to become an humble servant of the Lord, and friend to many. Paul attended public schools in Ore City, Texas. He completed his education at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, moved to Dallas, Texas and practiced as a licensed Barber for many years. Paul discovered that God had a wonderful plan for his life. Over 43 years ago, he was diagnosed with a condition of bleeding on the brain which left him blind and paralyzed in both his arms and legs, seventeen specialists gave him only an hour and a half to live, he received a

miraculous, supernatural, divine healing and rededicated his life to Christ, was filled with the Holy Ghost and begun his life mission of kingdom building. Being led by the Holy Spirit to organize a church, in April 1973, a church was formed and located at 1422 Kiest Blvd., in Dallas, Texas. The true Word was taught, and there was much to learn. In March of 1973, they were blessed to move to 2355 Cedar Crest Blvd, Dallas, Texas. In the year 1993, Superintendent Pope had a vision to “renovate the Lord’s House”. This was a huge challenge, but he moved with determination and faith in God, completing the job with the excellence that has marked his life and ministry. In the same year, God blessed Superintendent Pope to organize a church in Tyler, TX. True Light #2. His accomplishments include, but not limited to: Founder if True Light Ministries; Pastor of True Light COGIC; Founder Key of Faith Crisis Center (Mentoring Parolees, counseling drug addicts and providing shelter); supported

Feed the Hunger Ministries. Superintendent Pope also supported African and Haitian Ministries for Kingdom Building; Co-founder of TLC, now L&P HomeCare Agency and Co-founder of Heavens Lil’ Angels Day Care. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hosea and Delilah Pope, two brothers, Allen Pope and Eugene Pope; two sisters, Shirley Mack and Margie Faye Wheeler and one grandson, Colinz Pope. He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted and loving wife of 43 years, Mother Lula Mae Pope, two sons: Larry Pope, of Big Springs, TX, (Sheria) and Joel Pope (Melva) of Palmer, TX; three loving daughters: Paula Pope Edwards, Regina Pope White (Vincent), of Dallas, TX, and Kathryn Pope Harris of (Carlester), of Tucson, Arizona. Three sisters; Doris Thomas, Helen Pearson, and Rosie Turner, all of Dallas, Texas. Sisters in law, Ms. Maudene Pope, Oakland, Ca., Pastor Sylvia Pope, Dallas, TX, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Larry (Dorothy) Johnson, William (Linnie) Ray of Lindale, TX.,

twelve grandchildren, twenty-three greatgrandchildren, nine godchildren; many nieces and nephews, countless dear friends, including Mrs. Verna Walton secretary for over 19 years and Mr. Danny Smith, who visited him bringing coffee almost every morning during his two years of illness. Also, a life time friend, Mr. Albert Jacobs. Shirley Ruth Thompson Shirley Ruth Thompson was born January 9, 1947 to Mrs. Hazel Matthews Cummings Cobb & Mr. Robert Lee Cummings. She accepted Christ at an early age.Sis Thompson received her education in Waco, Texas, and graduated from G.W. Carver High School. She served as secretary of St. Paul Baptist Church. “Ask the Undertaker” Ask the Undertaker: As a concerned daughter, my mother and I discussed her funeral arrangements during the holidays. She has a prearranged funeral with Golden Gate Funeral Home and owns a grave space at a local cemetery. My mother was told by one of her friends that she needs to purchase opening and closing of the grave and a concrete liner or vault. What is opening and closing and is it necessary and also, what is the difference between a concrete liner and a vault? Dear Concerned Daughter: I commend you on your discussion with your mother and our prayer is others will do the same. Thank you for intrusting Golden Gate Funeral Home with your mother’s prearranged funeral. Your mother’s friend is correct it is necessary to have opening and closing of the grave plot. This means the digging of the grave plot and covering it back up. Most local cemeteries require a concrete liner or a vault, but it is not a state law. A concrete liner and a vault are designed to help hold up the weight of the earth, so there is no sinking of the grave. The concrete liner is not designed to protect from outer elements entering the liner. Vaults are designed with protective inner liners that help to protect against outer elements entering the vault, such as water, etc…
