Keep Focused for the New Year Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” It is common during this time of year for folks to plan for the future and start anew. Henry Nelson The top three New Years’ resolutions are losing weight, quitting some form of nasty habit, and spending less money. However, the forth resolution is what I am interested with this evening. The forth most popular New Years’ resolution this year is to “be a better person”. That is the same message Paul had for the church of Ephesus that we heard read a moment ago. He said to make the best use of your time, understand the Lord’s will, encourage one another, and to thank God for all things. Another way to look at this is to set your priorities, be positive in your attitude and work to foster your relationships, all for the glory of God. In order to be successful in 2010 you have to set your priorities straight. Paul spoke of this same theme in his letter to the Philippians and addressed these ideas in Philippians 3:13 "This one thing I do." Now he obviously did more than one thing. He made tents. He preached sermons and established churches. He healed the sick. He wrote letters. He did a lot of different things. Sometimes you like to think of your lives as being able to fit anything and everything in. So, you try to fit it all in. In the process, sometimes we do not get around to completing what we wanted to get done. But, priorities are just like those big rocks. If we don’t place our important events and goals at the top of our priorities, we may not be able to get them done at all. We all have big rocks in our lives. What are yours? They should include these: each day drawing nearer to God, spending time with Him in prayer, and seeking His guidance for your life through reading His Word. Remember to put these big rocks in first or you’ll never get them in at all. It was Jesus who said in Matthew 6:33, "Seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Amen!

Jesus made it clear that the kingdom of God was to be at the top of our priorities. Things such as worship, prayer, reading scripture as well as taking care of our fellow men and women should be right at the beginning of that list. Paul described it this way in his letter to the Philippians. Philippians 4:8 says, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” This is where our priorities should be set for the upcoming year. You must cultivate a positive outlook. Paul showed that there is more to life than just prioritizing what we do with our time and resources. It is also how you look at things that determines what you will accomplish. If you focus on events of the past, we may lose sight of the future. Do not focus on what is behind you. You cannot change that. Instead, focus on where you want to be, what you want to accomplish and where you want to go. Look to the honorable, pure and commendable things. Focusing on the positive aspects of where we can lead our lives, can lead to wonderful things. Without changing the events themselves, a positive attitude can change how you perceive those events. It can also affect those around you. A negative attitude seems to fuel other negative attitudes. But, a positive attitude can change the mood of an environment and help build progress towards our goals and priorities as well as encourage those around you. Next you have to Forgive and give up your grudges and build relationships. Building on those honorable things; focusing our priorities and keeping a positive attitude, we can help build relationship with those all around us. I have a friend that has recently visited Rome. While there, he saw the place where Paul was imprisoned. In a small underground stone room about 15 feet in diameter, no heat, little light, uncomfortable in every way, Paul wrote these positive words of encouragement to the church in Colosse. In Colossians 3:12-13 he wrote: “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has Focused, Continues on Page 7

Legendary Soul Singer Teddy Pendergrass Dead at 59 By Lola Searcy R & B singer Teddy Pendergrass, who was one of the most electric and successful figures in music until a car crash 28 years ago left him in a wheelchair, died of colon cancer, he was 59. Pendergrass died Wednesday in suburban Philadelphia, where he had been hospitalized for months. He was an international superstar and sex symbol. His career was at its apex and still climbing before the accident. Friend and long-time collaborator Kenny Gamble, of the renowned production duo Gamble and Huff, teamed with Pendergrass on his biggest hits and recalled how the singer was working on a movie. “He had about 10 platinum albums in a row, so he was a very, very successful recording artist and as a performing artist,” Gamble said Thursday. “He had a tremendous career ahead of him, and the accident sort of got in the way of many of those plans.” Pendergrass left a remarkable imprint on the music world as he ushered in a new era in R & B with his fiery, sensual and forceful brand of soul and his ladies’ man image, burnished by his strikingly handsome looks. It was Pendergrass voice that got him his break in the music business-it was his drum playing abilities. He met Harold Melvin, who was looking for replacement member for his group, the Blue Notes, and signed on to be the drummer. Later, be became the lead singer of the group, which became know as

Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. The Band started working with Gamble and Leon Huff and had signature hit’s in the early 1970’s with Wake up Everybody”, and If you don’t Know me by Now” After the accident, he dedicated much of his life to helping others with spinal cord injuries and founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance to do just that. Gamble said he wanted to help others. “In his quiet moments, he probably did a lot of reflection. But I never saw him pity himself. He stayed busy,” Gamble said. But I feel he is in a better place now…He doesn’t have to go through that pain or whatever he was going through any more.”

24th Annual MLK Parade features Local Legends By Lola Searcy Monday, January 18th will mark the 24th year of the Elite News’ MLK Parade and Career festival. The Career Festival will take place inside the Grand Place Building, where more than 75 vendors will be on hand to share their products and offer their services to spectators and visitors. This year’s crowd is expected to match if not exceed last year’s crowd of over 225,000 who watched as High school bands, drill teams, marching units, floats, cheerleaders, church steppers and drill teams lined the length of Martin Luther King, Jr. boulevard to celebrate and honor perhaps this country’s greatest Civil Rights Leader and Drum Major for Justice; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, the MLK parade marshal’s read like a list of Who’s Who in Business, Religion, Sports, Community Leaders, Media and Politics. Amid people shouting, “get out of the streets”, and booing us. 24 years later, it is home to the largest MLK Parades in the country”. All because we didn’t quit! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR. “Do our God Take Bad Raps?” Yes, our God does take bad raps, or does God get accused for things He did not do. We use the word RAP in order for the young to be able to identify with the meaning. Have you ever heard someone say I knew Gene Turner God was going to take Out of the Eyes him out of here, because of a Layman he was such a bad boy/girl, God don’t like ugly. You’ve heard people say many times that God took someone on home 10, 20, 30, 40, or 5 years old. How many times have you heard something like this? When Kennedy was assinated here in 1963, people were running around here saying that God took him out, and some were saying that his time was up, and some say his time just simply ran out. Here is a list of God’s moral attributes: 1. Holy 2. Love 3. Just 4. Good God is just and He has no respect of person, God does not love me any more than He loves you, and He does not love you any more than He loves me. God would not do something to you that He would not do to me, and vice versa. God has promised all mankind three score and ten years upon the face of the earth, this means that every man, woman, and child has the same starting line and the same finishing line. Amen. The moral attributes and the character of God will not let him break His promises, which means that God cannot break His promise even if He wanted to do so

because of His Justice. If God would break His promise He would cease to be God. You see, here is a man who ran a stop sign and hit a MACK TRUCK, and some one say I knew the Lord was going to take him out because of his so and so, and he did this and he did that. Not so, the fool ran the stop sign himself whether he was drunk or what, but God had nothing to do with him running that stop sign, he did that on his own. A lot of people think when President Kennedy was assinated that God took him. Why would any Christian think that when a little disarranged man like Oswald hides behind some boxes in a building and pulls the trigger on a rifle and takes the life of an innocent person. Now, how in the world did God have anything to do with this sneaky person’s action? In Matthew 2:16 Herod sent troops into Bethlehem and slew all the children two years old and under. Did God take them out of the world, or was it Herod and his troops? You see, God gives all mankind the same promise. God has promised everyone seventy years on the face of the earth. Men, women, and children falls short of the seventy year promise because of something we do to ourselves, or what someone else do to us, not God. Now, the question arises, could God have prevented this from happening? Yes, God can do anything He wants to do, He is God. God does not prevent most things, or some things because of His permissive will, God allows things to happen because He can see Raps, Continues on Page 6

The Stretch of Faith Going to physical therapy this past year was not was fun, because therapists would stretch my arms and hamstrings. It was painful when they pushed and pulled my legs, trying to straighten them from the effects of arthritis. I vowed that when my therapy stopped, I would never stretch them myself. Months later, I still find myself stretching. Jesus also knows the importance of stretching. Just before the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus turned to Philip and asked where to get food Geraldine Davidson-Hooker for everybody. The Lord had already planned the miracle. But he asked the question to strengthen Philip’s faith. Philip’s response was disappointing; still, another disciple allowed the situation to stretch his faith. Andrew brought a boy and his lunch to Jesus, and look what happened! The Lord is still asking us to do faithstretching exercises. He may ask you to do something in the church that you’ve never done before, or speak to a friend about the Savior. While physical stretching benefits the body, spiritual stretching builds strong faith. Let the Lord stretch you.

Prayer Closet PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

The evidence of spiritual growth is shown in use when we pray continuously. Prayer does something to us, which is evident to others and ourselves when the Lord Jesus took Peter, James and John with him into the mountain to pray on the occasion of his transfiguration. The divine record tells us that as he prayed, his countenance Pastor was changed as Jesus Clarence talked to the Heavenly Henderson Father, something took place in his own spirit, and his shining face reflected that new Joy and Strength was his. His disciples marveled at this change. The greatest and best things that happens when we pray is that we are changed and transformed by the renewing of our minds.

Devastation continues as Haitians began the process of recovery and rebuilding. By Lola Searcy The people of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti will began receiving some much needed aid from countries around the world today. The Earthquake which devastated the capitol city on Tuesday has left the city in total shambles. Planes carrying teams from China and France, Spain and the United States landed at Port-au-Prince’s airport with searchers and tons of water, food, medicine and other supplies, with more promised from around the world. The U.S. dispatched troops and ships along with aid to Haiti, and other nations were joining in the effort to help the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation, where the International Red Cross estimates that approximately 3 million people – a third of the population may need emergency relief. The streets of Haiti are lined with make shift camps amid piles of salvaged

goods, including food scavenged from the rubble. President Barack Obama said “one of the largest relief efforts in our recent history” is moving toward Haiti, with thousands of troops and the broad array of civilian rescue workers deployed to aid the stricken country, backed by more than $100 million in relief funds. To the Haitians, President Obama promised, “You will not be forsaken”. Raps, Continued from Page 5 around the corner, but we can only see to the corner. A man and wife turns over their car and dies, but their two year old son does not get a scratch. God’s permissive will is always in effect. We do not know why God allowed those babies to die in Beth-lehem. Looking around the corner God might have seen a rebellious generation like their fathers. You do know there were many rebellious Israelites during this time. I said maybe, not a fact, but anyway you look at it God always knows what He is doing, but we don’t. You see, these babies are all going to heaven at their death, and God knew this. They might not have if they had reached adulthood, because of the way their ancestors lived. Let us not forget to read our Bibles, and may God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Focused, Continued from Page 2 a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” Amen! Paul’s priority was to teach the church how to act. He focused on the honorable things with pure motives. If we lived by only those words think about how much easier it would be to do virtually everything. If we dropped our disagreements, and worked out our differences, would not it be easier to get along? How would we deal with our neighbors, friends and loved ones? What about subordinates, co-workers and superiors? Would not cooperation be the norm? Would not friendship be a standard? Based on these words of the Apostle Paul, his motives and his goals, this is my challenge to you. Choose one person that you need to create a better relationship with and pray for them for the next six weeks. Pray for their welfare. Pray for their success, pray for their health. If you have not prayed for this person before, it’s a good start at improving your relationship with them. As you pray for them, your attitude toward them will soften. As you think of them in positive terms, your attitude towards them will also become more positive. You are told to pray for those who persecute you, but not only those who are against us, but those who you would like to become closer to. Pray for a boss, a co-worker, your spouse, a parent, a sibling, a son, a daughter, a friend, an enemy, anyone. Pick someone and petition God on their behalf. This is an honorable approach to the New Year. Priorities, attitude and getting along with people all will lead us to a happier and more God fearing life. God has always had a positive outlook towards your lives. Man sinned and He immediately promised to send a savior. In Jeremiah 31God described His rela-

tionship with us. He said “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” Amen! It is this everlasting love that convinced the great writer, Josh McDowell to convert to Christianity. He studied for years the historical, archeological and physical evidence for signs of God. But in the end, it was the love of Jesus that convinced him it was true. It was God’s priorities, God’s attitude and God’s relationships that showed him that the Almighty cares for him, as well as us. Just as God shared Himself to develop these relationships, it is our own priorities, attitudes and relationships that make us who we are. God sent his only Son Jesus to bear the burden of our sins because we were valuable enough. He expects us to share ourselves as well. Set your priorities with God in mind and you will be blessed. Set your attitude on positive things and you will succeed more often than fail. Focus on your relationships and they will flourish in time. Now the pretenders are gone home its time for the contenders to stand up and declare their superiority. All the speculation of the regular season and the analysis Leon Simon of the talk show host has come to an end, the real season starts now. All those Cinderella teams Broncos, Dolphins, Patriots etc, over the great Walt Frazier said you make your name during the regular season, make your fame during the playoffs. With that in mind I wonder if you can lose your fame in the play offs ? If so maybe someone will realize that Andy Reed is a good regular season coach and he’s as lost in the playoffs as some thought Captain Kangaroo (Wade Phillips) was. Randy Moss put himself back in the category I had him in all along, great front runner Randy can’t or won’t make the tuff catches that Terrell Owen will and can make. The Dallas Cowboys avenged them selves from a 13 year play off absence with a thorough whipping of the Philadelphia Eagles. This weeks opponent could be a bit more challenging. The Minnesota Vikings was thought to be a Super bowl front runner along with the Steelers ooops! That didn’t work and if the Cowboys play as well rounded a game as they have the last 3weeks then the Vikings might have a short season. I don’t believe they will be as easy out as the Eagles but this is a win able game. The Vikes presents a strong running game Adrian Peterson, an even stronger passing attack, Brett Favre throwing to a corp. of receivers that include the NFLs ofensive rookie of the year Percy Harvin. The Vikes also sports one of the leagues best defenses against the pass and the run. A pro-bowl pass rusher in Jared Allen the NFCs sack leader. The Cowboys won’t be going up there unarmed, the Boyz run the ball with great authority also, and as of late you can see Wade Philips influence on the defense especially Dave Campo’s influSports, Continues on Page 10

Sports, Continued from Page 9 ence on the pass defense. The Cowboys secondary along with the pass rush is one of the reason for recent success on defense. Should be a great contest. Last week Jack Yates High School in Houston defeated Houston Lee 170-35. They had Coach Greg Wise on ESPN First Take. Supposedly some of Yates players said before the game that they would try for 200. They had an African American reporter on from Detroit, Rob Parker, saying how ashamed he was for the parents of those kids at Yates. He was appalled that the like of restrain and sportsman ship wasn’t displayed by Yates. Coach Wise said he played all 15 of players each quarter in the 1st half. He started the second half with his starting 5 an altercation broke and the officials would not allow any one to enter the game but the once that were on the floor at the time. Yates game is pressing do you stop pressing because your opponent can’t play. On ESPN first take two weeks ago they thought it was a shame that the Indianapolis Colts pull there starters in a

www.dfwelitenews.com

game against the New York Jets. It was said that in athletics you always strive for perfection. I guess that don’t apply to an inner city school that society has stripped of all self esteem. They (the powers that be) has been trying to close Jack Yates for years. Not only close Yates, but take over all of 3rdward like they are the inner city close to down town all over the country. If Mr. Parker think that the parents of those kids are ashamed of their effort to achieve perfection, I can see why he’s still in Detroit, a city that somebody or something should teach perfection. That city is so sad they say “last one out cut the light out“.

Please forgive me if this is the first time you read it in print. Teddy Pendergrass died Wednesday during a difficult recovery from his colon cancer surgery 8 months ago. Of course even after he was paralyzed in a 1982 auto accident, we still loved some Teddy and supported his post accident albums, surprised that he still sounded soooo good! I remember the one and only time I saw him live! What a show! I was a teenager or thereabouts working for the old KNOK-FM 107 and received 1st or second row seats tickets from then boss DeWayne Dancer! That allowed me to take my friend Mike Kelly and his girl who came to town for the show! It was one of my many bonding experiences with a man who went on to be among other tings, one of my bosses, best man at our wedding and baby's Godfather! That night Teddy set it off with in my opinion is greatest 3 back to back and they were

hot at this time! When he went thru "Come On and Go With Me", "Close The Door", and "Turn Off The Lights", you could almost feel the roof comTeddy Pendergrass ing off of Reunion Arena! Of course Teddy was huge with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes... Who knew when they hired him as a drummer, his Vocals would give them some of there biggest hits such as, "If Don't Know Me By Now", "There Love I Lost" and Wake Up Everybody"!! Thru tears, " Teddy, thanks for all of the wonderful memories and music that will be with us forever. Teddy Pendergrass is dead at age 59!! What seems important after that? Well, we've still got a Football game to play! Our Cowboyz head to Minnesota to play Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson and the powerful Minnesota Vikings Sunday at Noon on Fox Four! Don't they know Sunday at Noon is church time in the DFW! I've heard that churches in the past, have moved services up an hour to insure folks make it out... There will be a man shortage in many houses of worship this Sunday.. Arghhh I wish I'd suggested a 10AM instead of our normal 11AM start to Dr. Timothy J. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Statement On Haiti Earthquake Washington, DC – (January 13, 2010) Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement on the earthquake that occurred yesterday in Haiti: “My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of yesterday’s earthquake near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, and with those in other parts of the world who are frantically trying to contact loved ones in Haiti. President Obama has made a commitment to deliver immediate humanitarian relief to the people of Haiti, and I fully support his effort to mobilize American resources. He recognizes, as I do, that the long-term challenges within Haiti make the unwavering support of the United States even more critical.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day John 15:12 “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. "We must work unceasingly to uplift this nation that we love to a higher destiny, to a higher plateau of compassion, to a more noble expression of humanness" Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States holiday marking the birth date of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King's birthday, January 15. It is one of four United States federal holidays to commemorate an individual person. Dr. King successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. He was assassinated in 1968. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was founded as a holiday promoted by labor unions in contract negotiations.[2] After King's death, United States Representative John Conyers (DMichigan) introduced a bill in Congress to make King's birthday a national holiday. The bill first came to a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979. However, it fell five votes short of the number needed for passage. Two of the

main arguments mentioned by opponents were that a paid holiday for federal employees would be too expensive and that a holiday to honor a private citizen would be contrary to longstanding tradition (Dr. King had never held public office). Soon after, The King Center turned to support from the corporate community and the general public. The success of this strategy was cemented when musician Stevie Wonder released the single "Happy Birthday" to popularize the campaign in 1980 and hosted the Rally for Peace Press Conference in 1981. Six million signatures were collected for a petition to Congress to pass the law, termed by a 2006 article in The Nation as "the largest petition in favor of an issue in U.S. history." At the White House Rose Garden on November 2, 1983, United States President Ronald Reagan signed a bill, proposed by Representative Katie Hall of Indiana, creating a federal holiday to honor King. It was observed for the first time on January 20, 1986.

The bill established the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission to oversee observance of the holiday, and Coretta Scott King was made a member of this commission for life by United States President George H. W. Bush in May, 1989.http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr._Day cite_note-5 Each year on the third Monday of January, schools, federal offices, post office and banks across America close as we celebrate the birth, the life and the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is a time for the nation to remember the injustices that Dr. King fought. It is a time to remember his fight for the freedom, equality, and dignity of all races and peoples. A time to remember the message of change through nonviolence. Just as the theme of this information states: "Remember, Celebrate, and Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off!" Although many people see this, and other holidays as "a day without home work," or "a day to hang out with friends," it is much more than that; it is the celebration of equality, the celebration of freedom, and the celebration of a wonderful, wonderful man! The national holiday honoring Dr. King is an occasion for joy and celebration for his life and his work toward non-

violent social change in America and the world. Traditionally, we celebrate holidays with parties, family picnics, fireworks, and a trip back home or to the seashore. However, we must also be mindful that this is a special holiday; one which symbolizes our nation's commitment to peace through justice; to universal brother- and sisterhood; and to the noblest ideal of all: a democratic society based on the principles of freedom, justice and equality for all people. Whether you celebrate Dr. King's birthday on January 18th or during Black History Month, the holiday is an occasion for thanksgiving, unselfishness, and rededicating ourselves to the causes for which he stood and for which he died. It took many years for Congress to decide to celebrate the holiday. In the years leading up to the official decree many African-Americans celebrated the birthday themselves with a few states declaring King's birthday a state holiday. The bill was finally passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate and was signed into law on November 2, 1983. The first national celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday took place January 20, 1986. This year the Martin Luther King Holiday will be celebrated on January 18, 2010. Amen!

Defense Wins Championships By Oscar Warren Anthony Spencer finally got the validation he was doing things right for the Dallas Cowboys. In the second quarter of the 11th game, on Thanksgiving Day against Oakland, the linebacker got his first sack of the season. The second came late in the same game with predecessor Greg Ellis, who had 20 ½ sacks the previous two seasons, on the other sideline with the Raiders. Spencer has had five sacks in the past four games, all of the Cowboys victories as the wrapped up the NFC East little and posted their first playoff victory in 13 seasons. He was the NFC defensive player of the week after two sacks and a forced fumble in the regular season finale. “Everybody had been sort of criticizing him, telling him what he needs to do, “Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware said. “He’s been getting to the quarterback, getting pressure. Earlier in the season, he wasn’t getting sacks. But now he is…He’s making a lot of plays.” In the game before getting his first sack, Spencer had one taken away when

officials reviewed a play when he pushed Washington’s Jason Campbell out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage and ruled Campbell threw the ball away just before being sacked. He wasn’t in game shape, said inside linebacker Brady James. He had never played an enter (NFL) game until now. “You have to play the game to get in game shape. And so his first couple of games, that’s what he, was doing.” But James was quick to add that Spencer was close to getting quarter back even then. “He’s had several sacks taken away from him due to penalties or somebody messing up.” James said. He’s just continued to press forward and lift his game up a notch.” “You’re on the field to make plays and the more plays you make, the more confidence you get out of it.” Said Spencer, who hadn’t played linebacker since high school. The Cowboys play the Vikings on Sunday in Minnesota. Defense Wins Championships and the Cowboys are playing great defense. How ‘bout the Cowboys!

DEMOCRACY TOOLBOX 2010 DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY CANDIDATES OVERVIEW & GOOD LEGAL CLINICS Nearly all Democracy Toolbox clients have worked in the community for one year or more as part of their campaigning. All clients were asked to do volunteer community service throughout the year, not just campaign. The point is that one ought to be a public servant before being elected a public servant. One ought to give before asking for votes. As part of the Democracy Toolbox program, candidates participated in over 100 events – attending meetings of clubs and organizations, volunteering, walking in marches against domestic violence and for better health, sponsoring events of the Dallas and Irving NAACP branches, the Greater Dallas Urban League, the Dallas Black Academy of Arts and Letters, the African American Museum and many other groups, contributing to scholarship funds, speaking to students, and the like. Several candidates also engaged in teaching, mentoring and board service as part of their own ongoing community activities. The signature Democracy Toolbox service project for the year was the establishment of Good Legal Clinics. This series of free clinics and seminars is an offshoot of the C.A.W. Clark Legal Clinics that are held monthly at Good Street Baptist Church. This was the 20th anniversary of the Good Street Baptist Church series, and founders Barbara Steele and Judge Cleo Steele challenged our group to work with them in putting on at least 20 clinics countywide to celebrate the anniversary. We completed our 20th clinic at the 2009 KwanzaFest, with our presentation of LegalFest at the event. Our topics for the year included “Living Wills and Medical Power of Attorney,” providing these important documents, which tell doctors and loved ones your medical wishes if you are seriously ill or injured, free of charge to citizens. We were able to provide these valuable documents to approximately 2500 people throughout the year. We also covered “Second Chances in Criminal Justice,” a seminar that shared information about various diversion programs available from the Dallas County criminal justice system, such as the DIVERT and Re‐Entry drug court programs and the Road and Bridge program, as well as information about deferred adjudication facts‐vs‐fiction. Another topic was “Juvenile Justice – What Parents and Children Need to Know.” As we continue the series in 2010, we will cover the above topics and also add a seminar on child custody and child support issues.

“Ask the Undertaker” I am a fellow Funeral Director, and I look at you as a mentor. I admire Golden Gate Funeral Home business principles. My plans are to one day to own a funeral home. With the economy the way it is, it appears that families are shopping around for the best deal. My question is; do you feel that it is ethical to advertise prices? Dear follow Funeral Director: Thank you for your admiration. I feel it is the duty of Funeral Directors to educate the public on matters concerning our business. With third parties selling funeral merchandise and misrepresenting our intent to provide the public with the best prices and services. I believe we should disclose as much information as possible, and be honest and open when it comes to funeral services. Advertisement with prices is not unethical; it provides the public with decision making power.

John E. Beckwith is the Owner and CEO of Golden Gate Funeral Home A Crematory.
