Inauguration Day 2009 44th President of the United States Barack Obama – Yes We Can!
President Barack Obama
I Have a Dream (August 1963) - ” We have come to this hollowed spot to remind America of the fierce legacy of Now… Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children” It took 15 years to create the federal Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday. Congressman John Conyers, Democrat from Michigan, first introduced legislation for a commemorative holiday four days after King was assassinated in 1968. After the bill became stalled, petitions endorsing the holiday containing six million names were submitted to Congress. Congress passed the holiday legislation in 1983, which was then signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. As celebrations, Inaugurations, and the 23rd Annual Elite News MLK Parade gear up for these Historic events, in the backdrop are the preparations of the next historical moment when the next President and First African American person will become the President of The United States, we are bracing for the very moment that symbolizes the dream fulfilled. But in the midst of all the excitement and anticipation, there lies some stream of doubt. Exactly 40 years after the demise of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the United States elected its first African-American President. Maybe the hope we have come to understand is not at all the
PAGE 2
dream in sum total. When Barack takes the oath of office, neither equality nor opportunity will jump out across the land and in our community collectively or proportionately, and when we all wake up on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, the crisis of Wall Street will still be looming and the Gaza strip will still reek of death, destruction, and unrest. So why are so many of us excited and celebrating the election of the first black President? There are certainly many answers to that question as there are stories of distress and heartache from the civil rights fight - but still in all, there are those that will be filled with glee and that is to be expected. Dr. Martin L. King Jr. never got to see the day his “Dream” comes true. On April 4, 1968, on a Hotel balcony at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, he was assassinated by a racist sniper’s bullet. Although Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday is January 15, 1929, we celebrate it every third Monday in January of each year. President Ronald Wilson Reagan signed the bill making his birthday a federal holiday in 1983, and it was observed for the first time in 1986. As coincidence would have it this year, we celebrate MLK’s birthday on Monday January19, 2009, the day before the nation will witness the inauguration of President-Elect, Barack Obama, making history of his own by becoming the 44th President of the United States, on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. Many thought we would never see the day when the United States of America would elect an AfricanAmerican’s President. The theme of Obama’s Inauguration will be “A New Birth of Freedom”. Barack said, “As President, I’ve got to be looking out at the Horizon.” One could translate this by saying that he is going to always stay one step ahead and be that Instrument of Change that the United States so desperately needs. Some people are of the opinion Obama is the Modern day MLK Jr., not so much from the religious aspect but from the aspect that he like Dr. King has spent his entire career fighting for Justice. The answer is yes, we believe President-Elect Barack Obama is the person to bring about the “Change” our Nation needs in order for the dream that King and our Forefathers envisioned from this Nation has come true. It’s not a coincidence that these two events are so close to one another - it is Destiny. So let us all celebrate this History of Accomplishment.
NOTES FROM UNION HOPE ‘Rahab Helps Israel’ Joshua 2:1-4, 12-14; 6:22-25 Our Sunday school lesson reflects on how Joshua sent spies to look over the land of Jericho. They went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab Eld. Lloyd and stayed there. After T. Morgan the king of Jericho was told, he sent a message to Rahab to bring out the men because they have come to spy out the whole land, but she didn’t, she instead hid them. How does a prostitute escape the judgment of God? Rahab believed the report she heard about the Lord and his deliverance of Israel. Rahab and her family were protected after the walls of Jericho came tumbling down and at that point she found new life by accepting God. When Rahab protected the spies she was demonstrating her faith in God.
www.dfwelitenews.com
Our faith in God is demonstrated to others when we do what pleases him. The divine word from Heaven was delivered by our Beloved Pastor, Elder L.T. Morgan with his message being “Learning from Yesterday and having a Better Tomorrow”-spoken from First Corinthians 10:1-12. We live in a world of disappointment, and if we don’t come to grips with the truth, we are doomed to be unhappier tomorrow than we are today. Do we stop and think of the mistakes we make? Not only that, but to realize how we sometimes make the same mistakes over and over. Now, don’t get me wrong, we are all going to make mistakes, but if we want a better tomorrow, we have to learn from our mistakes yesterday. If you keep doing the same thing over and over, then you have not let the Holy Sprit take control. Enjoying Jesus is beautiful, but pacifying the flesh is a mistake. Love and Blessings to All

ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST
As we enter into our Prayer Closet, I want to remind you of the importance of “Full Surrender!” Jeremiah tells us (Jeremiah 29:13) how the Word of the Pastor Lord came to Clarence him saying, “Ye Henderson shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” We cannot expect to pray effectively until we come to God wholeheartedly. No halfhearted man ever made a success in business. Only wholehearted husbands and wives make successful marriages. So it is with praying! Some people make good prayers only when they are desperate, only to discover that being desperate doesn’t mean that we are wholehearted, but being wholehearted could reveal how desperate we are.
The “Greater” Community First Baptist Church is having it's official “Installation Service” for our Pastor, the Rev. James E. Coleman. The Best Resolution American Heritage Dictionary defines resolution as: "The quality of being resolute. Something that has been resolved (to make a firm decision about). A formal statement of a decision voted." On New Years, many people resolve to make the new year more profitable by giving up things in their lives that are negative or unproductive. It is common for many to give up things such as overeating, drinking too much, procrastinating, etc. From my own experience, people have a tendency to "give up" negatives rather than "seek out" something positive. In my opinion, the reason for this is, all too often, people don't know what good things they should be Geraldine searching for or Davidsonstriving to Hooker achieve. In the Bible, we are told it is God's desire for us to prosper and be in good health. "Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good heath and that all may go well with you." (3 John 1:2) It is also God's desire for us to be more than conquerors when facing trying situations. "...in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us." Romans 8:37 Through Christ, we CAN do all things... he is strength and comfort to our soul. "I can do everything through him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13 To resolve putting off evil and negatives, is exactly what God calls us to do. We are to search out truth and goodness. This process is referred to as "renewing your mind." "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:2) It is God's will that all men come to know His Son Jesus Christ as it is only through Him that we have salvation. To resolve to give up overeating or procrastinating is all well and fine, but how much more important it is to resolve to seek out God and His Son Jesus Christ?
PAGE 6
Finish The Race God Has Given You! Philippians 3:12 “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider Henry Nelson myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” The New Year is a time to reflect and do a course correction. It is often a time when people make decisions and turn over a new leaf. Maybe they decide they are going to exercise regularly and lose weight. People are going to do all kinds of things to improve themselves physically and spiritually. The problem is you soon forget and slip back into old habits and patterns. As you start this New Year let me suggest to you the attitude you should have: Today there are lots of books that focus on success. Everyone thinks they have the key to making life fulfilling and solving all life’s problems. The ironic thing is that many books on success books are written by unsuccessful people. They have no real experience they just wrote a book! When I want to learn about success, I want somebody who has done it. I want to look at somebody who has accomplished what I want to accomplish. We learn much more about successful life from models than we do from manuals. Jesus is our ultimate model. As I get older I realize that I still do not have it all together. I have not arrived. I am not perfect. I am still growing." The point is that successful people never stop growing. They are always developing, growing, expanding, and learning. Many Christians will give you the impression that they never have problems. They have somehow arrived at sinless perfection with no problems or doubts! The longer I grow as a Christian the more acutely aware that I am of my own inadequacies, limitations, weaknesses and faults. Rather than saying "Look how far I’ve come," I have to say, "Look how far I have to go!" The starting point for successful living is to face your faults, be honest, and do an evaluation. Proverbs 28:13 says, “You will never succeed in life if you try to hide your sins. Confess them and give them up; then God will show mercy to you.” Amen! Successful people are honest about their faults. Transparency is a mark of joy. A lot of people are miser-
able trying to be something they are not. They are afraid to admit their weaknesses because they are more interested in having a reputation than they are in being successful. Sometimes you have to choose between the two: “Do I want to LOOK good or do you want to BE good?” Amen! The first question you ought to ask yourself this year is, "What do I need to change?" Take a personal inventory and be honest about what you see. Stop being manipulated by your memories. If you are going to be all that God wants you to be you need to stop wasting your time on yesterday. It is behind you. Your past is past. You need to let go of your guilt, grief, and grudges. You cannot walk into the present holding on to the past. Success involves learning to forget. Isaiah 43:18 "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See I am doing a new thing!" How do you forget the past? Your brains store everything you do. So how do you forget the former? Successful living starts in admitting that you do not have it all together, that you still have a long way to go and grow, that you have not arrived yet, you’re not perfect. You do an inventory of your life. You have got to know where you are before you know where you want to go. You start by looking at where are the areas that need improvement. Do not let the past affect you anymore, control you, or have power over you or manipulate you. You can learn from the past without dwelling in it. Move on. This is true of God. God is not forgetful but he chooses not to remember our sins. Psalms 25:6-7 says, “Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you are good, O LORD. Amen! There are two things you need to forget. The first is to “Forget your Failures.” Do not rehearse things in your heart that God has long since forgiven and forgotten. Satan’s favorite desire is to paralyze you with the past, to manipulate you with the memories. Learn to forget the past." Do not sit around beating yourself up for mistakes. Everybody reading this has blown it at least once. You have things you regret doing. Amen! The second thing is to “Forget your Successes.” Just like failure, you can learn from success but do not live in them. It is easy to rest on your laurels, to live in the past, to base your security on past performance, to think, "I have got it made!" The good old days are done with. Let them go. Success tends to make you complacent and fills you with pride. Then you
www.dfwelitenews.com
stop growing and learning. Then you’re going to fail. Luke 9:62 says, “Anyone who starts to plow and then keeps looking back is of no use for the Kingdom of God.” Next you have to Concentrate on that one thing that you do well. If all you do is forget the past, you may just have amnesia. Successful people are goal oriented. They focus on the future. The secret to success is concentration. Pros concentrate on one thing. They specialize. You cannot know everything, be everything, or do everything. You need to have clear goals. Less than 5% of the people in America ever write down a life goal. It is not by accident that the 5% that do are the top leaders in their field. Write it down and focus on specific goals. 1st Corinthians 9:24 says, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?” Run in such a way as to get the prize.” Amen! Spiritual growth is not an accident. It is intentional. You must intend to grow. You must make a choice to grow. I do not know how to say it any clearer than this. You are as close to Jesus Christ as you choose to be. If you are not growing spiritually do not blame your wife or husband, kids, r parents or your pastor. You are as close to God as you choose to be. If you do not feel close to God right now, guess who moved? God did not move. What are you living for? What is

Continued from Page 6 your goal in life? What is most important? If you do not know where you are going, nobody else does. Focus on the future. You have to have DETERMINATION. The principle of determination means that absolutely nothing worthwhile in life happens without effort. The only way you coast is when you’re going downhill. If you’re coasting in life right now you’re headed downhill." The great people in life are just ordinary people with extraordinary amount of determination. They never give up. There are three kinds of people rowboat people, sailboat people, and steamboat people. Rowboat people need to be pushed or shoved along. Sailboat people move when a favorable wind is blowing. Steamboat people move continuously, through calm or storm. They are masters of
themselves, their surroundings, and their fate. In your spiritual life do you always have to be pushed along or only move with the “next best” fad that comes along. Have you set your course and nothing will stop you from moving forward? Acts 20:24 says. “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.” Amen! You have to keep going and not to stop or give up or quit. You have to keep on keeping on until you have experienced all that God has for you in life. You have to finish what you have started. Is that your life goal as well? Now you know why you have to finish the race and complete the work that God has given you to do? Amen!

A. SMITH’S “BACKYARD SPOTLIGHT” Last year was truly a great year for America and even more so for the African American community. Most of us did not think that there would be a Black Man elected President of these United States in our life time. The unthinkable has happened. Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States of America “A Change is Coming”. KNON “The Voice of the People” is bringing their Inauguration Celebration to the” Hood”. RL’s Blues Palace, 3100 Grand
Avenue, in the heart of Sunny South Dallas is the place to be. On Tuesday, January 20, 2009 festivities begin at 6:00 pm. There will be Guest Speakers and Entertainers, such as Jeff Aycock, KM Williams, Ms. Arquilla Smith, and Pops Blair from Elite News, Ras Riddi, and Rev. Robison, Antonio from ACORN Spanish Community show and Rev. Marion Barnett, Tunde Obaze, Rev. Ezra Davis, and Mr. RL Griffin along with the Blues Palace Showband. There will be a performance

“Have we left our First Love? Part II 2 Chron. 7:13-14 We have left our first love, and the reason why I know that is, because of what is happening around the world. It is not haphazard that God holds leaders responsible for what happens, negative or positive. Going back to 2 Chronicles 7:13-14. “If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; If my peoGene Turner ple, which are called by Out of the Eyes my name, shall humble, of a Layman themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. God is true to his word. He will do what He says He will do. God has designated us as Americans to lead the free world, the same as He has designed pastors to lead our churches, presidents to lead countries, Governors to lead states, Mayor’s to lead cities, and so on and on. The bottom has fallen out of everything because the people who are called by His name stop praying like they should. As we stated in part I: that 90% of Christians are living in America. This within itself makes America leader of the free world. We have left our first love, because we are going along to get along. You see, when things are going well for us we get caught-up into a mode of not needing God, so, we do not pray with urgency any more. We start thinking that it is us who are making good things happen, and Christians should know better, because we should know that it is God who brings things to pass. We as a people have not learned anything from Israel. Israel was and is God’s people and we as Christians are God’s people. You see, the people of God get into trouble when they stop praying and following our God. That’s what has happen here, we’ve left our first love which caused all nations to fall on bad times because of us. It is the Christians who makes the difference in what happens in the world. It is very clear that the Black
PAGE 10
nation in America have left our first love. It is God who has brought us from below bottom to the White House in DC. God brought us through slavery, Jim-crow, sharecropping, cotton fields, injustice, segregation, and just about everything else that could be thrown at us. But, we survived all of that, because of God. God gave the Black race a built in survival kit, and what I mean by that is the fact that he gave us a mental understanding about things that He did not give some other cultures. For instance: When I was a little boy in Honey Grove, Texas I remember Hog killing season. Look what God did in those times. There were no meetings to discuss when each family would kill their Hogs; it was God who gave them the time to kill their Hogs. Watch this: Nobody killed hogs at the same time in a neighborhood. People in Lick-Skillet would kill hogs one week, Rock –Hill another week, East end another week, and West end where I lived another week. The people in theses different sections of this small town never mentioned when they would kill hogs, but in each of these sections of town no family in those different sections would kill at the same time. God set this up for us. He caused us to kill hogs at different times, so, that fresh meat would be passed around among the people in that section of town for many, many weeks. When my Dad would kill hogs the children would take fresh meat to neighbors in the neighborhood, and there were seven children in my family. The next week here would come all that meat back from another neighbor, and next week the same thing until all families was through killing. That’s God working. While I’m on hogs, look at what white people would do. They would hire us to kill their hogs and cut them up. Now since money was a No! No! With everybody, they would call themselves humiliating us by giving us the feet, the hog’s head, the tail, and intestines. This was our pay for that work. No money, but look what God did. He gave the Black people the knowledge to take the head and make Hod-Head Cheese, take the intestines and make chitterlings, take the feet and make a meal plus take the toe nail from the feet put a hole in them and string them on a string to be hung up to
dry, and when the kids would catch a cold these toe nails were boiled and made a hot medicine to drink. Next day cold gone. What caused it? (GOD) Cowchip tea (GOD) no money. It is God who has brought us this far, and He is not through yet. Do we want to leave a love like this? But we have, yes we have, we’ve stopped praying, we’ve stopped training our children, especially our boys. They have no respect, they wear their pants down below their butts, walk into public places cursing, breaking into houses, leave school and go to drug houses on lunch breaks. They live with somebody (Mom/Dad). They grow-up and drop out of school. Get married and leave their wives with 3 or 4 children and the young mother has to work 2 or 3 jobs in order to raise them alone. I brought up hog killing, because nobody had refrigeration in those days. We had iceboxes, that would not keep fresh meat. See what God was doing. I mentioned Hog toe tea; Cow-chip tea just a few of the old remedies that God gave us. We did not have money for doctor bills, and we had to wait until all the whites were waited on before he would see us. Sometimes it was an all day thing, so Cow-chip tea was in order. Who brought us through these things? (GOD) you hear young people say, “ that was in you all’s day, but what they do not understand is, that had God not provided for us then there never would have been any of them now. We as Black people especially needs to get back to God who was and is our first love. Christians all over the world needs to get back to God who is our first love. The only thing that is going to straighten out things economically in this country and all other countries is God. Budda and none of these other so-called Gods are going to be able to do it. Only the true and living God., Creator of heaven and earth, and maker of all things. David describes it best in the 24th Psalm: The Earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Anyone who does not regonize the God I just described is knocking on the very door of Hell. Let us not forget to read our Bibles, and may God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

The Burden of A President Submitted by Bessie Smith Benford Placed in the spotlight Not by choice Through the voice of the people And God’s preparation spent For the burden of a President Filled often times with inhibitions Yet a strong force Not understood by man Exuberated with spunk Marked on the forehead In the spirit of the cross For the burden of a president Is not counted as a lost. Each time one wonder What would be the chore A person fir must undergo For he has a duty to fulfill Out of God’s goodwill Spreading love, peace, understanding and brotherhood Because God appointed him without consent To fulfill the burden of a President I would like to dedicate this poem to President Barak Obama – The “44th President of the United States of America

COMINS, MARVIN BROOKS was born on July 21, 1920 in Dallas, Texas. His parents, John and Paralee Comins, christened him Marvin Brooks Comins. His sister, Johnnie Mae Stuart, brother John Jr., and his parents preceded him in death. Mr. Comins departed this life on Saturday, January 10, 2009. His services were entrusted to Black & Clark Funeral Home, located at 2517 Illinois on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 11:00 AM and were held at St. Luke Community UMC. Marvin attended Booker T. Washington High School and was a member of the first class to graduate from Lincoln High School in Dallas. He loved the game of football and played it with great skill and enthusiasm in high school, at Wiley College, and in the Army at Fort Francis Warren in Wyoming. After his tour of duty in World War II, he returned to Wiley College, where many good things
happened to him. Marvin became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., earned a B.A. Degree, and married Ola Mae Jackson. He was an assistant coach to Fred “Pops” T. Long. After leaving Wiley, “B” was principal of Carver High School in Georgetown, Texas. He and Ola later moved to Dallas, and were blessed with an adorable baby girl, Adrienne. To Adrienne Camille, he was “Daddy.” His family, friends, and co-workers called him “B” or “B Baby.” He was a mentor and coach for young men at St. Luke United Methodist Church, in the neighborhood, and the local U.S. Postal Service, where he was employed for thirty-one years before he retired. Marvin loved the outdoors and was a successful “gentleman farmer” who everyone admired. Those who will remember him with love include his wife of sixtythree years, the lovely Ms. Ola Comins; daughter Adrienne C. Wright and her spouse, Rev. Derrick R. Wright; grandson, Calvin Ray Wright; sister, Dorothy J. Ross, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
