Keep Focused for the New Year Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” It is common during this time of year for folks to plan for the future and start anew. The top three New Years’ Henry Nelson resolutions are losing weight, quitting some form of nasty habit, and spending less money. However, the forth resolution is what I am interested with this evening. The forth most popular New Years’ resolution this year is to “be a better person”. That is the same message Paul had for the church of Ephesus that we heard read a moment ago. He said to make the best use of your time, understand the Lord’s will, encourage one another, and to thank God for all things. Another way to look at this is to set your priorities, be positive in your attitude and work to foster your relationships, all for the glory of God. In order to be successful in 2010 you have to set your priorities straight. Paul spoke of this same theme in his letter to the Philippians and addressed these ideas in Philippians 3:13 "This one thing I do." Now he obviously did more than one thing. He made tents. He preached sermons and established churches. He healed the sick. He wrote letters. He did a lot of different things. Sometimes you like to think of your lives as being able to fit anything and everything in. So, you try to fit it all in. In the process, sometimes we do not get around to completing what we wanted to get done. But, priorities are just like those big rocks. If we don’t place our important events and goals at the top of our priorities, we may not be able to get them done at all. We all have big rocks in our lives. What are yours? They should include these: each day drawing nearer to God, spending time with Him in prayer, and seeking His guidance for your life through reading His Word. Remember to put these big rocks in first or you’ll never get them in at all. It was Jesus who said in Matthew 6:33, "Seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Amen! Jesus made it clear that the kingdom of God was to be at the top of our priorities. Things such as worship, prayer, reading scripture as well as taking care of our fellow men and women should be right at the beginning of that list. Paul described it this

PAGE 2

way in his letter to the Philippians. Philippians 4:8 says, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” This is where our priorities should be set for the upcoming year. You must cultivate a positive outlook. Paul showed that there is more to life than just prioritizing what we do with our time and resources. It is also how you look at things that determines what you will accomplish. If you focus on events of the past, we may lose sight of the future. Do not focus on what is behind you. You cannot change that. Instead, focus on where you want to be, what you want to accomplish and where you want to go. Look to the honorable, pure and commendable things. Focusing on the positive aspects of where we can lead our lives, can lead to wonderful things. Without changing the events themselves, a positive attitude can change how you perceive those events. It can also affect those around you. A negative attitude seems to fuel other negative attitudes. But, a positive attitude can change the mood of an environment and help build progress towards our goals and priorities as well as encourage those around you. Next you have to Forgive and give up your grudges and build relationships. Building on those honorable things; focusing our priorities and keeping a positive attitude, we can help build relationship with those all around us. I have a friend that has recently visited Rome. While there, he saw the place where Paul was imprisoned. In a small underground stone room about 15 feet in diameter, no heat, little light, uncomfortable in every way, Paul wrote these positive words of encouragement to the church in Colosse. In Colossians 3:12-13 he wrote: “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” Amen! Paul’s priority was to teach the church how to act. He focused on the honorable things with pure motives. If we lived by only those words think about how much easier it would be to do virtually everything. If we dropped our disagreements, and worked out our differences, would not it be easier to get along? How would we deal with our neighbors, friends and loved ones? What about subordinates, co-workers and

superiors? Would not cooperation be the norm? Would not friendship be a standard? Based on these words of the Apostle Paul, his motives and his goals, this is my challenge to you. Choose one person that you need to create a better relationship with and pray for them for the next six weeks. Pray for their welfare. Pray for their success, pray for their health. If you have not prayed for this person before, it’s a good start at improving your relationship with them. As you pray for them, your attitude toward them will soften. As you think of them in positive terms, your attitude towards them will also become more positive. You are told to pray for those who persecute you, but not only those who are against us, but those who you would like to become closer to. Pray for a boss, a coworker, your spouse, a parent, a sibling, a son, a daughter, a friend, an enemy, anyone. Pick someone and petition God on their behalf. This is an honorable approach to the New Year. Priorities, attitude and getting along with people all will lead us to a happier and more God fearing life. God has always had a positive outlook towards your lives. Man sinned and He immediately

promised to send a savior. In Jeremiah 31God described His relationship with us. He said “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” Amen! It is this everlasting love that convinced the great writer, Josh McDowell to convert to Christianity. He studied for years the historical, archeological and physical evidence for signs of God. But in the end, it was the love of Jesus that convinced him it was true. It was God’s priorities, God’s attitude and God’s relationships that showed him that the Almighty cares for him, as well as us. Just as God shared Himself to develop these relationships, it is our own priorities, attitudes and relationships that make us who we are. God sent his only Son Jesus to bear the burden of our sins because we were valuable enough. He expects us to share ourselves as well. Set your priorities with God in mind and you will be blessed. Set your attitude on positive things and you will succeed more often than fail. Focus on your relationships and they will flourish in time. These are worthy goals for the New Year and one’s which you can be proud to strive for. Now you know why you have to keep focused for the New Year. Amen!

The VIP Breakfast concluded with a jaw-dropping and soul stirring and tear-jerking rendition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s, “Why Jesus Called a Man a Fool” speech by 22-year old Mountain View College student and Oak Cliff Native, Nucleus Johnson. At the conclusion of the VIP breakfast, Mr. Jordan Blair gave instructions to the Parade Marshals and the 24th Annual MLK Parade was underway! The parade route began at the corner of Lamar and MLK and proceeded east to Robert B. Cullum Blvd, onto the grounds of Fair Park. It took hours for the long line of

corvettes, floats, marching bands, drill team, steppers entertainers, TV and Radio personalities to drive past the crowds of thousands who watched and attended the Elite News’ 24th Annual Parade! As the procession of Parade Marshals led by Grand Marshal Rolando Blackman, drove down MLK, it appeared the parade would never end; taking more than 2 hours from start to finish! There was not a bad place to be during the entire event! As long as you were along the parade route, you were able to see the enormous display of floats, classic vehicles, marching bands, cheerleaders, drill teams and beauty queens. Once inside the grounds of Fair Park, visitors and spectators gathered inside the Grand Place building for the Career Festival. Inside the Grand Place building, over 60 vendors lined the walls of the Grand Place building to promote and sale their wares with the crowd of over 15,000 who wandered inside. Cowboys Stink up the place, who is the blame--team or coach? By Oscar Warren An otherwise strong season came to an unfulfilling conclusion last Sunday at the Mall of America Field. Minnesota dismissed the Cowboys hopes of advancing to the NFC Championship Game for the first time in 14 years with a 34-3 mauling. The Cowboys allowed more points to the Vikings than they did during the fourgame winning streak they carried into this game. A team that outscored opponents, 99-31, since it caught fire against the Saints, a team that hadn’t trailed in a game since Dec. 13, watched all that unravel. The fast start the Cowboys relied on in recent weeks never materialized. The Cowboys turned the ball over and missed a field goal try on their first two possessions. The ultimate humiliation occurred on the final play of the first half: The Dallas Cowboys couldn’t even protect Tony Romo long enough to throw a Hail Mary. Minnesota sacked Romo six times, forced three fumbles – he lost two – and intercepted him once. Big plays have been a crucial part of the Cowboys’ offensive identity this season. But they had only one play of more than 20 years Sunday, a 22-yard reception by Witten in the fourth quarter. Miles Austin caught four passes for only 34 yards, his lowest output since he had only 20 yards receiving in a loss to Green Bay in November. “Yeah, I’m surprised, “ Austin said. “We didn’t play as well as we should have, and hats off to them. They played great. They were ready.” Thirteen times, the Cowboys were tackled for a loss. Their first seven series

contained at least one negative play, in part, because the noise at Mall of America Field prevented Romo from varying his cadence – he has seven different options at home – which made the offensive line vulnerable. This is not the day to bury Tony Romo, though many of us will. Don’t blame him for the 34-3 beat down the Cowboys received last Sunday. Tony played well in December for the first time, earning player of the month honors, and won his first playoff game. Now, he’s ready to become one of the league’s elite quarterbacks. More important, he had an opportunity to personally watch Brett Favre show why he’s amongst the finest quarterbacks to ever play. That’s the difference between a Hall of Famer, and a player still forging his legacy. The Cowboys stressed the importance of playing as a team all season. On last Sunday, they were outplayed on offense, defense and special teams.

Reflection As I look back over the years, I have a few regrets; one that I was saved at a young age and failed to do what God had ordained me to do. I would have had longer to serve the Lord. Also, I regret that I didn’t have children so I could have spent more time teaching them God's ways. Obviously I can't do anything about the past, so I'm trying to pass along what I know to my Children’s Church Ministry. For more than six years now, God has allowed me to do exactly what He called me to do; and, I've never done anything in my life that I have enjoyed more. Of course, there were some parts I didn't enjoy, but that's true Geraldine Davidson-Hooker with anything, isn't it? It's a good idea to examine this past year, to see if there's anything you regret. You can correct it right now. It's never too late. Make up your mind that next year will be different. We will all face judgment one day and should be prepared. You can't do anything about the past, but you don't have to continually live in it either. "We shall all stand before the judgment seat of God" (Romans 14:10). Happy New Year

Prayer Closet PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

Confessing and forgiveness are the most important ingredients to put into our prayer life. When confessing your sins, know that you do not have to have an emotional experience to be forgiven. First ask then accept by faith in God’s word that he will do exactly as he says…”He is faithful Pastor and just to forgive you.” Clarence 1 John 1:9 Henderson Unforgiveness breaks your full communication with God. It desensitizes your spiritual things. When you ask for forgiveness for yourself and those who have sinned against you, you will be set free and able to walk in a right relationship with God and man.

I had a feeling early Sunday morning that the Dallas Cowboys season was about to come to an end along with San Diego, when I turned on ESPN. When Tom Jackson, Keyshon Johnson and then Leon Simon Pre game crew was almost unanimous in their praise for the Chargers and Cowboys. That group of guys and their leader Chris Berman are about as good at picking winning teams as Joe Louis was at picking winners at a fight. As good a fighter as Joe was he couldn’t pick the winner of a fight if he saw the Doctor getting in the ring to stop it, he wouldn’t know which fighter was in trouble. The Cowboys took a good whipping at the hands of the 2 ½ point favorite Minnesota Vikings. That usually happens when a team gets wound up real tight to win a game, instead of getting prepared to go to war for 60min. The down side of the former is every thing has to go according to the game plan to keep you at that euphoric state the first negative play an there is panic an eventually discuss followed by give up. On the other hand if you go in with the only expectation to squabble for 60 hard minutes, then you are not as prone to get blown out as the Boyz did or quit. That why good coaches try not to break routines and keep things at as low an emotional pitch as possible. The same fate befell the Cardinal on Saturday. Emotional pitches and high expectation burn more energy than running a marathon, an probable twice as draining. This not a formula for winning its just one for longevity. On another front, for lack of performance 4 High schools could be closing. I don’t want to anger former students, but this could be the best thing to happen to Disd athletics since integration. Kimble, Pinkston, Roosevelt, and Seagoville. With the exception of Pinkston, the rest of those schools are part of an over crowded southern sector. The southern sector of Dallas is the second largest school district in Texas second only to Houston. The powers that be over loaded mainly Oak Cliff to nullify the athletic talent in Oak Cliff. Now that there are no children

NOTES FROM UNION HOPE “Demonstrated in Acts of Healing” Our Lesson for church School was “Demonstrated in Acts of Healing” Matt.9:27-34 Matt.11:2-6. Jesus proved that He was the Son of God by demonstrations of healing that fulfilled Isa.42:6-7. Two blind men approached Jesus with a request to Eld. Lloyd receive their sight; they T. Morgan followed him into a house where Jesus asked them did they believe that he was able to this. The question of God’s ability to heal is never “can he” but can we believe him, they replied “Yes Lord” the master touched and healed them. They were told not to tell what he had done but these men couldn’t keep it to themselves. If the Lord has been good to us we ought to tell it! He delivers a man dumb and possessed with a devil, and the haters said he did it

by the power of the prince of devils. It was true of Jesus and will be true in the believers life there will always be those that refuse to believe the great things that the Lord does in the life of the believer. John in prison wanted to be assured that Jesus was who he thought he was sent his disciples to ask him that probing question “Are you the one that should come, or should we look for another” Jesus answered him with Isa.42:6-7. Jesus by demonstrations proved he was the Christ. Our morning message was delivered by Eld.Louis Amerson from the subject “Trust in God for deliverance” Ps.37:1-6. This is a Psalm of David expressing his confidence in the deliverance of God; we should have our own song of deliverance. When trouble arises in our life we must know as assuredly as David that if we trust in the Lord he will deliver in his own time his own way. Be blessed

Rollin With A Brotha’ Welcome to tha weekend Baaaaby! Remember, there are two ways to help the Haitian People with donations... The American Red Cross by texting Haiti to 90999 or WyClef Jeans organization YELE Haiti, by texting YELE to 501501... We've done something with Wyclef and plan on Kevan contributing thru the Red Browning Cross. The charge is 10 dollars for "ARC" and Five Dollars for Wyclefs Yele charged to your phone bill. My partner Blood Hound Benny says Wyclef, who's Haitian is under a lot of pressure.. He reportedly went off back stage on one of his helpers, who did not get his drink fast enough at the Peoples choice awards... Super congrats to Wade Phillips Wade Phillips and the Dallas Cowboys on a great season... We finally have something to really build on. My daughter Danielle for the first time in her life got excited this year about the boys. She's 18 and it's been since she was 4 or 5 since the Boyz won a playoff game! Have a great summer fellas, you deserve it! Is the Tiger Woods situation going from bad to worse... What could be worse than a broken home, 15 or so mistresses blabbing, multi-millions lost thru endorsements and

play???? Well probably nothing, but Tiger Woods did not need to be photographed at a Sex Clinic. Can we give this man some peace(I know the answer). Tiger has admitted he Tiger Woods has a Sex Addiction and now he's seeking treatment! Hope it's not one of those "Methadone detox" clinics, where they wean you gradually or substitute something else!... I don't even wanna think about it, but Tiger is in Hattiesburg Mississippi getting treatment... Who would have imagined that the place to go for world class sex therapy was Hattiesburg? All kidding aside, I wish Tiger luck and peace in his life.Conan Obrien is out on Channel 5 late nights and Jay Leno is in...I like both guys, but Conan was kinda a breath of fresh air and when he lands on Fox later this year, I will be watching...By the way Conan got a 45 Million Dollar severance package and give his staff 12 Million as their package... Now that's a Carsonian move! Looking for a Hollywood Mansion??? Christina Aguilera's Hollywood Hills pad has been reduced from 8 Million to a cool 6.25 million. For the price you get the 1200 square foot master bedroom and the in home Theater, of course... Of Course! Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs this week: James Earl Jones, 79, Muhammad Ali is 68, Dolly Parton is 64, George Foreman is 62, Jim Carrey 48, Hakeem Olajuwon 47, Kid Rock and Shawn Wayans is 39! Sports, Continued from Page 9 In the Cliff, you have a lot of half empty school bldgs. Roosevelt and Madison are 3a schools, that’s not enough students to pay the light bill. Over half of their games are out of town be cause there are no 3a schools in the inner-city. That travel is an expense DISD don’t need. Divide those students among the existing schools and maybe they can be more competitive academically as well as athletically. For those of you that think Athletic don’t count, you probably stayed up all-night on December 24. Waiting for some fat guy in a

red suit to bring you some thing free. Check with Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State, Texas etc. let them tell you why the Football stadium is the largest facility on campus. and how many new building those $17 million bowl coalition games contributed to. And why teams are cheating to get in the coalition. Winning also give the kids more School pride and another reason to want to go to school. Why do you think these small towns put the name and School record on the most visible object in town. The water tower.

For years, Burrell's programs have been hailed as models that enhance the participation of small, minority and women owned businesses in the competitive marketplace. We are pleased Martin will remain as a key consultant for American Airlines Center in assisting us to continue our commitment to our whole community," Mayne added. "With projects that have participation goals, we approach the expectations in a slightly different manner," said Burrell. "Dallas set a 26 percent goal. OVERVIEW & GOOD LEGAL CLINICS Nearly all Democracy Toolbox clients have worked in the community for one year or more as part of their campaigning. All clients were asked to do volunteer community service throughout the year, not just campaign. The point is that one ought to be a public servant before being elected a public servant. One ought to give before asking for votes. As part of the Democracy Toolbox program, candidates participated in over 100 events – attending meetings of clubs and organizations, volunteering, walking in marches against domestic violence and for better health, sponsoring events of the Dallas and Irving NAACP branches, the Greater Dallas Urban League, the Dallas Black Academy of Arts and Letters, the African American Museum and many other groups, contributing to scholarship funds, speaking to students, and the like. Several candidates also engaged in teaching, mentoring and board service as part of their own ongoing community activities. The signature Democracy Toolbox service project for the year was the establishment of Good Legal Clinics. This series of free clinics and seminars is an offshoot of the C.A.W. Clark Legal Clinics that are held monthly at Good Street Baptist Church. This was the 20th anniversary of the Good Street Baptist Church series, and founders Barbara Steele and Judge Cleo Steele challenged our group to work with them in putting on at least 20 clinics countywide to celebrate the anniversary. We completed our 20th clinic at the 2009 KwanzaFest, with our presentation of LegalFest at the event. Our topics for the year included “Living Wills and Medical Power of Attorney,” providing these important documents, which tell doctors and loved ones your medical wishes if you are seriously ill or injured, free of charge to citizens. We were able to provide these valuable documents to approximately 2500 people throughout the year. We also covered “Second Chances in Criminal Justice,” a seminar that shared information about various diversion programs available from the Dallas County criminal justice system, such as the DIVERT and Re‐Entry drug court programs and the Road and Bridge program, as well as information about deferred adjudication facts‐vs‐fiction. Another topic was “Juvenile Justice – What Parents and Children Need to Know.” As we continue the series in 2010, we will cover the above topics and also add a seminar on child custody and child support issues. INDIVIDUAL CANDIDATE PROFILES JUDGE BILL MAZUR – 304TH JUVENILE DISTRICT COURT Judge Bill Mazur has presided over the 304th Juvenile District Court since being elected in 2006. This court is one of two Dallas County courts dedicated to juvenile justice matters. Judge Bill Mazur Before taking this bench, Judge Mazur was an attorney in private practice for more

than 30 years. He was also an associate Judge for the City of Grand Prairie for 15 years, and a professor of political science at Tarrant County College. Judge Mazur has earned a reputation for out‐of‐the‐box thinking and involvement in juvenile justice beyond his own courtroom. Judge Mazur has implemented programs such as Project Spotlight, a partnership with every municipal police department in Dallas County to provide better police protection in communities combined with probation officers working closely with at risk youth to reduce juvenile crime. The Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative has also helped reduced criminal recidivism among Dallas County’s youth. He was recently appointed to the Texas Public Private Partnership Commission, charged with redesigning the Texas foster care system. He also serves as a member of the Dallas County Juvenile Board and the Grand Prairie Children First Board. Judge Mazur is a member of the Dallas County Democratic Party Leadership Council and he is endorsed by leaders such as Commissioner John Wiley Price, Senator Royce West, District Attorney Craig Watkins, and many others.
