Starting the New Year The Right Way
One of the positive effects of the recent financial tragedy our Henry Nelson country experienced is that people appear to be shifting their priorities. People are centering their lives more on home and family rather than jobs and careers. We are looking again at the value of relationships, and even our \more time with their loved ones, according to a recent Gallup poll. There is hope that we are becoming less materialistic and selfabsorbed. It is one of the good things that have come out of a very bad situation. It is always interesting to hear what people are making resolutions about as the New Year begins. Ann Landers has made some good suggestions in her column. She writes, “Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories. Free yourself of envy. Resolve to stop magnifying small problems and shooting from the lip. Lighten up. When you feel like blowing your top, ask yourself, ‘Will it matter in a week from today?’ Be optimistic. Read something uplifting. Deep-six the trash. Walk tall, and smile more. Do not be afraid to say, ‘I love you.” Some other resolutions I read are a little less serious. “I have resolved not to do drugs anymore, because I get the same effect just standing up really fast.” “I have resolved to live in my own little world, because at least they know me here.” “I have resolved to stay married, because it is so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.” “I have resolved to not make any resolutions, because nobody is perfect. I am a nobody, therefore I am perfect.” There is a place on the Internet where you can make your new year’s resolutions online, and they will email you a monthly reminder of what your resolutions were as if anybody wanted to know after the first month. It is called HiAspire.com. But what I found interesting was seeing what resolutions people were making for 2010. Not surprisingly, exercise and dieting topped the list. Also near the top were things like becoming a better person and a better spouse. But the one that caught my attention was the one that said, “Find Dreams.” People have dreams and they want to live them out. How can you move beyond just making resolutions and begin creating solutions for
www.dfwelitenews.com
your lives? We do it by working on the core issues of our lives instead of just making cosmetic changes. We have to go to beyond the symptoms to the source of our problems. Losing weight may only be a symptom of the core issue of a lack of self-control in your life around which there may be many other symptoms. Perhaps you are using food to sedate yourself. Controlling your drinking may only be a symptom of the fact that you are looking for something to deaden the pain and disappointment in your life, instead of finding your comfort and strength in God. Controlling your anger may only be a symptom of a deeper need you have to control life and the people in it with your rage. We focus on the core issues rather than the presenting problem. This week I would suggest three areas on which to place your focus. The first is: You should focus on personal development. If you want to develop yourself personally, the first thing you need to do is see if there is any un-surrendered area of your life. If there is an area of your life that you are holding back from God there will be no growth in your personal life, no personal development. You cannot have victory and freedom in your life if you are holding some things back from God’s control. You cannot resist God and then expect his blessing in your life. It is not going to happen. Talk about core issues! If you are saying, “I will obey God in everything except this,” you are blocking God’s work in your life. This is not so much personal development as it is allowing God to do a work in you. The truth is that you cannot develop yourself this is the reason that our resolutions usually fail. This is the work of God. Paul realized this when he wrote: “So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?” But then he answers his own question when he says, Romans 7:21-25 says,” “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Amen! It is through Christ that we are delivered from our own wretchedness not our own effort. But what if you have failed so many times before that you have given up even trying? Take seriously the words of Paul when he wrote in “Philippians 3:12-14 says’ “ Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself

Are We Shaming Religion in 2010? By Lola Searcy Every year around this time we make resolutions about what we’re going to do in the New Year. Most of us make what we call New Year’s resolutions. And most of the time, we talk about what we are going to do differently in the New Year. Most of us lie to ourselves and talk about those extra pounds that we are going to try to lose this year; some of us talk about getting out of debt by paying off our credit cards, paying off those bills that haunted us since day one of the previous year! Some of us have made resolutions to spend more time with our families, especially our children. Some of us are still talking about finding “Mr. or Ms. Right, this year! This year, I thought about the resolutions we make and have made throughout the years, and I started to think, “What about our religious resolutions”? What resolutions have we made about our relationship with Jesus Christ this year? After all, none of the traditional ones we’ve made will ever stand a chance of being resolved, if we don’t first resolve the one we made when we decided to follow Jesus Christ so many years ago! I wonder if the reason we don’t publicly state our religious resolutions is because we are ashamed of our religious beliefs! After all, it seems that as a Nation, we have erased religion from every aspect of our lives! We have decided as a Nation that children may no longer pray in school, at sporting events, etc. We have taken Christ out of Christmas. Instead of Merry Christmas, we now say, “Happy Holidays” or
“Season’s Greetings.” Imagine that! A Nation that was founded on religious principles has allowed a few, (Madeline Murray O’Hare, the United States Courts) to silence us when it comes to our religion. I wonder how many of us realize how our relationship with God affects our everyday life. I mean, how do we ever expect to pay off our credit card debt, when we don’t even pay our tithes? Remember? Malachi 3: 8-10 (KJV): 8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. 10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. You have to give before you can receive. Remember, the more you give, the more he gives to you! If you are not a tither, make a resolution to begin this year giving back to God what he has already given to you. You will be amazed at how things will begin to turn around in your life, once you put tithing into practice! Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
And how will we ever get rid of those extra pounds if we don’t do as our Lord commands us in Hebrews 12: 1 “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” Let us resolve to spend more time with our children this year! The classrooms used to be places of refuge, places where our children could go to learn and pray together. I remember when we would be on our best behavior in school, just so we could earn the right to read the announcements and pray the Morning Prayer before we began our school day. As a matter of fact, I was reading an article in Liberty magazine that talked about how we have allowed the State and Federal government to censor our religious expressions. John W. Whitehead wrote in the January/February 2010 edition of the Liberty magazine, “Religion and religious expression have been objects of censorship in the public schools for quite some time. However, the intolerance of anything related to religion has taken a turn for the absurd in recent years.” Our children need and deserve as much of our time and attention as we can give them nowadays. Proverbs 22:6 reminds us to, “train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” The word of God is true! I am a

Can we as Christians Pass the Test of the Almighty God? Genesis 22:1-18 Can we as Christians pass the test of the almighty God? We are not asking the question can you pass God’s tests, but will you? You see, as a child of God you know that “you can do all things through Christ who streghthens you”. In order for us to pass God’s test, we must be willing to do what God brings to us as a test. You see Gene Turner God knows just how much we Out of the Eyes can bear, but we do not know of a Layman how much we can bear, that is where the song came from. You see, sometimes God tests us in order that we might know how much we ourselves can take or bear, and when we are tested by God we learn something about God that we never knew before. We become stronger in our faith, we grow in His grace. In verse (1) the bible says; “ after these things God tested Abraham.” What was the writer referring to when he pinned these words? It appears that there existed a connection a connection in Abraham’s life between the events prior to his testing and to examine three significant happenings in chapter 21. First of all, God had blesses Abraham and Sarah with their first son in their old age, his name was Isaac. Secondly, Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian slave-girl who had given birth to Abraham’s first son, Ishmael, was sent away from Abraham and Sarah’s household with his first son. But the bible makes plain, “God was with the boy, and he grew up.” Thirdly, Abraham and Abimelech, a Philistine commander made a covenant with one another, and Abimelech affirmed that God was with Abraham in all that he did. If we have noticed, there is a one-word common denominator running through each of these “pre-testing” events-blessings. I know I am right about this! Abraham’s life was blessed by God. God blessed Abraham with two sons in his old age. God blessed Abraham’s first son born out of wedlock. God blessed Abraham’s relationship with would-be-enemies. There is a key point emerging from verse (1). After God had blessed Abraham with more than he
could have ever dreamed, GOD TESTED HIM. What does this tell us? It simply tells the Christian believer, that: AFTER A BLESSING you better get ready ‘FOR A TESTING. Take a look at the word testimony literally – Tes – i –mony”. There can not be a testimony without a test somewhere in the formula. If we could pick the brains of the great leaders of this world we would find that each of them endured and came through some intense and crucial testing times in their lives. I am not talking about just any leaders; I am talking about men and women who have made a divinely directed difference in the lives of the multitudes. You see, testing refines an individual, and he or she who makes it through God’s tests always emerges a better person and a better leader. Abraham did not run from his testing period when God informed him that it was testing time. When his name was called, Abraham responded, “Here am I Lord”. How do we react when God tests us? Do we protest, or say, “no not now Lord!” I am not ready! Or, ask God questions? Do we try to run away and hide and flunk the test without even trying? Or, do we respond in faith like Abraham. “Lord, here am I.” Testing measures your maturity; it scales your spirituality. Testing quantifies your commitment, testing assesses your aspirations, testing rules your righteousness. Thank God Abraham did not run off and hide and completely give up. Let me raise a question right here. What does it take to pass God’s test of Love. Let me answer for you. 1. Give God the best you have: Abraham’s only son 2. Follow divine direction: The reason why we make low failing grades on God’s test is due to not following His directions. 3. Let go and let God! Abraham gave his best and trusted God to provide. 4. Trust God ro provide whatever is needed. Whatever you need to pass God’s love test, He will provide. Will you pass God’s love test? When you pass this test your tested life becomes a testimony. Let us not forget to read our Bible. May God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

The Old and the New If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. —2 Corinthians 5:17 Typical resolutions in January are to lose weight, exercise more, spend less time at work and more time with family—maybe even stop chatting on the cell phone while driving. It’s not surprising that we want to change the things in our lives that we’re unhappy about—even though most New Year’s resolutions are kept for no more than 3 weeks. What if you were to ask God what He wants you to change, improve, or begin this year? He might tell you to: Geraldine • Demonstrate Davidson-Hooker more of the fruit of the Spirit in your life, which is “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol” (Gal. 5:22-23). • “Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who… persecute you” (Matt. 5:44). • “Go into the entire world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). • “Be content with such things as you have” (Heb. 13:5). • “Walk according to His commandments” (2 John 1:6). As believers and new creations, we can be free from old patterns and failures. We must ask God to help us live each day in the power of the Holy Spirit. Then we can shed the old and embrace the new.
Religion, Continued from Page 4 witness that they will not forget what they have been taught! So, as we begin the year 2010, let’s make a resolution to tell others about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and let’s not be ashamed to share the good news I want to leave our readers with something First Lady, Mrs. Ruth Chanel Brown of the ‘Exciting” Ervay Cedar Baptist Church shared with our Women’s class on this past Sunday. She said in order to have a successful 2010, we must make a new START. Stop making Excuses – 2009 is gone. There’s nothing we can do about the past Take inventory – Take a look at my behavior in 2009 and determine what I can do differently to make 2010 better. Act on Faith – Don’t be afraid to put your faith into action! Refocus – Change your focus. Start looking at things in a different light. Trust in God – Remember Proverbs 3; 5-6. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge Him and he shall direct your paths!

Prayer Closet PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST
Have you ever discovered the value of quietness in effective prayer? We live in a world of confusion and endless rushing to and from. Each century of our time has been more turbulent and noisy than the last. Since Adam, man has allowed the cares of life to disconnect his soul from Pastor God. Clarence In the midst of a genHenderson eration that had forgotten God, Elijah became so discouraged that he asked God to take his life. God came to Elijah in still small voice! When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and prayed! That is God talked to Elijah and Elijah talked to God. In the midst of the quiet time he had with God, there came a deliverance from discouragement and torment. The psalmist knew the value of quietness in effective prayer. Indicated in Psalm 37:7, “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him. Psalm 46;10 says, “Be Still and know that I am God.”

NOTES FROM UNION HOPE “Proclaimed in Baptism” We wish each and every reader of the Elite News a Happy New Year. We are excited that the Lord has granted us this extended time to work for and with Eld. Lloyd him in T. Morgan Kingdom building. Our church School lesson was “Proclaimed in Baptism” Matt.3:16; 11-17. After 400 years of silence, no Prophet’s voice heard in Israel, no word from God, suddenly a voice is heard crying out in the wilderness “Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand”. John the Baptist the forerunner of Christ called Israel to repentance and baptism. God is still calling men to repentance and baptism, the message has not changed because the hearts of men have not changed. As important as this message is some have forsaken it, and replaced it with a gospel that
only promises temporal things and people with itching ears can’t get enough. God used public baptism to proclaim Jesus to be the Son of God. Our morning message was delivered by our esteemed pastor Eld.L.T.Morgan from the subject “Becoming what God intended you to be” Rom.8:29. The Lord saved us to transform our lives from what we were to what he wants us to be “the image of his son”. To grow into Christian maturity does not happen by osmosis, we must decide to become mature saints, making a concerted effort to grow. Many are afraid to make any commitment to anything and spend a lifetime drifting. Commitment can give your life new meaning and purpose. Some fear commitment because you have to give up something but anything worth having cost something, but when we commit to Godliness God becomes our helper and we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Make this your year to commit to God and your church, live life with purpose. God bless

GREGG A. SMITH’S “BACKYARD SPOTLIGHT” The Power of Perseverance
Written by: Phyllis Byrd Jenkins Inspired by: The Holy Spirit One day Perseverance set out on the road of change. He knew this road would lead him into his new season. Therefore, he kept his focus by visualizing his dreams and goals. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere appeared a stumbling block called Persuasion. He was suave, slick and smooth talking. Persuasion began to give Perseverance a list of reasons why he should abort his journey of change. To help pled his case, Persuasion called on six of his closest buddies. “Say hello to Doubt, Delay, Detour, Discouragement, Don’t and Distractions,” he said with a crooked smile. Then they began to shout “You’ll never make it, Why don’t you just give up and turn back? Who told you to dream big? People will laugh at you, Where did you get that crazy idea? and You’re too old to do something new.” While they were speaking, Perseverance continued to move forward. He was determined to keep his focus. He began to speak his vision out loud. When they saw that his mind was made up, one by one they dropped out of sight leaving only Persuasion behind. Then Perseverance stood eye to eye with Persuasion and announced with confidence, “Now allow me to introduce you to seven of my traveling buddies.” Say hello to Focus, Preparation, Potential, Persistence, Power,
Passion and Priority. They each stepped forward and shook Persuasion’s hand. Then they spoke words of conviction and commitment. “Keep your vision and your plan before you”, “Nothing is impossible with God”, “You can do all things through Christ which strengthens you, “Don’t ever give up on your God-given visions, dreams and goals” and “Be confident of this very thing, He Who has begun a good work in you will complete it.” Persuasion was speechless as he realized he was no match for Perseverance and his friends, so he too faded away. Perseverance completed his journey and reaped all the benefits that awaited him. But he couldn’t keep his story to himself. He began to tell everyone about his journey and how God was with him all the way. Perseverance became an Encourager to all. And His Story Can Become Your Story, if you keep your Focus and Persevere. End what you begin in 2010.
Right, Continued from Page 2 yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Amen! The second area of our focus is on building relationships. None of us can survive this world alone. We were not created to live in isolation. There are no spiritual super heroes who can live isolated and insulated lives. There is no such thing as an army of one. We all know that the loner who needs no one else, and saves the world singlehandedly, is the stuff of movies only. To think that you do not need other Christians supporting and helping you is mere fantasy. To think you can survive emotionally separated from family and friends is a destructive illusion. The Bible says, “Romans 14:7 says, “For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone.” Amen! The reality is that we need each other, and because we need each other, we need to build relationships. This is what the church is all about. The church is not an organization, it is an organism. Church is not a place, it is people. When we are together, God meets us in ways that he does not meet us when we are alone. That is why Jesus said in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them. Amen!” When we come together, God comes to meet with us. This leads to the third area on which we need to focus: We focus on a life of service. One of the great tragedies of the world is people who live only for themselves. Their whole world centers around them. Everything is measured on how it affects them. The only effort they put forth is on things which will benefit them. Their focus is on getting instead of giving. They want to be served rather than serve. But the mark of true disciples of Jesus Christ is people who want God to use their lives. They want to serve God by serving others. When you are working to build relationships, other Christians benefit. When you decide to let God use your life in service, the whole world profits. God’s plan is that we all use our special gifts for his kingdom. Our

lives can mean something if we choose to live for something besides ourselves. There is a place for all of us, for the Scriptures says in Ephesians 4:11-14, “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Amen! Is your life being prepared for works of service? If not, you are missing God’s purpose for you as outlined in this scripture. You are missing God’s Will and God’s blessings. J. H. Newman says, “God has created me, to do him some definite service; he has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for nothing. I shall do good and I shall do his work. Therefore, I will trust him. Whatever, wherever I am, I cannot be thrown away.” You have a part to play in God’s plan for the world. Do not miss it because you are starting the New Year right. Amen!

The playoff are set! The Cowboys defeated the Philadelphia Eagles to win the NFC East. They get at least one home game. Leon Simon That's the good news. The bad news if any, is that they get a chance to play the Eagles on consecutive weekends. I know some of the reasons given for getting rid of Wade are about as weak as buying a new car because you lost the keys to the present one. I heard a couple that almost made me laugh, but I thought no sane person would say such a thing; so this person had to be sick or never worked for a living! They said Jerry Jones wouldn't fire Phillips because he didn't want a coach that would talk back to him. Wade was the type of guy that would do what Jerry wanted him to do, and could get along with Jerry --duh! If there's anyone out there who has ever worked for a living, I thought those were job requirements! Especially if you wanted to get paid with someone else's money! Texas Tech just fired a coach that wouldn't meet those requirements. If I remember my history correctly, didn't President Truman fire Gen. Douglas MacArthur for like reasons? Tom Laundry was considered to be one of the most innovative coaches ever. Tom brought in the 4-3 defense that is still being used today. In 29 years of Tom Laundry, and such Hall of Fame defensive players like Bob Lilly, Randy White, Mel Renfro and herb Adderly; the Cowboys never had back to back shut outs until

Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys of the 90's , thought to be one of the best teams ever, never had back to back shut outs. With Pro Bowlers like Charles Haley, Deion Sanders, Darren Woodson, etc. Not even the Big Tuna (Bill Parcels). Parcels and Johnson are both probably Hall of Fame Coaches; they were most definetly your "talk back", "don't have to get along" with the boss or the media types and they never had back to back shut outs and both were defensive coaches! Wade might be pretty good along with the fact that he can get along with his boss and the media! What a novel idea...Bobby Knight!

“Ask the Undertaker” Ask the Undertaker: I am interested in purchasing a preneed and have checked with several funeral homes concerning services and prices. In comparing services and prices I have found that Golden Gate Funeral Home’s prices appear to be unreal. I believe you get what you pay for, so my question is why are your prices so much less than your closes competitor? Dear Pre-Need Shopper: Golden Gate Funeral Home has been offering quality affordable funerals to families for over 29 years based on our founder John E. Beckwith Sr.’s philosophy which is to have “A funeral home that help all people.” With this philosophy Golden Gate Funeral Home has offered affordable funeral services to everyone. God has blessed us to service over 2,000 families in 2009. Because of the number of families that continue to place their trust in Golden Gate Funeral Home we are able to provide quality services at a price much more affordable than our competitors.
