The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA) Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Dallas, Texas – President of the Oak Cliff Baptist Minister’s Union, Reverend Lelious Johnson, will serve as Presiding Minister during this great Dr. MLK celebration. The IMA has been around since 1936 and that’s a long time to be doing anything. This organization has had only four presidents, starting with Rev. Maynard Jackson Sr., followed by Rev. E. C. Estell, Rev. S. M. Wright Sr., and the current president, Dr. S. C. Nash. While the IMA conRev. Lelious Johnson, tinues to serve the respective President Oak Cliff communities in which it Ministers Union resides, one thing remains very constant, the IMA makes a huge difference through outreach from the various churches in the association, the metroplex and surrounding counties through feed the hungry programs, which physically, spiritually and emotionally help those in need. The IMA gets involved with politics when it affects the wellbeing of the communities they serve. This is just part of the hallmark of the IMA. Over the 73 years of existence, nothing has changed except the IMA has been around for quite a while. Back in 1988, the IMA started the Dr. MLK celebra-

tion in honor of the MLK holiday and celebration that is always held two Sundays before the actual holiday, with outstanding preaching and singing. Under the leadership of the current president, Dr. S. C. Nash, the IMA has flourished and continues to make a difference. This celebration is just another example of what the IMA means to the churches and the communities it serves. At 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 11, 2009, at Saintsville Church of God in Christ, where Bishop J. Neaul Haynes is the pastor, there will be a church service and a wonderful celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the difference he made in the world. The spoken word will be delivered by the very capable Rev. Cedric Britt of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Ft. Worth, Texas. So stop whatever you are doing on January 11th, and come join the celebration Dr. S.C. Nash, - you will be glad you did. The President IMA celebration will be held at Saintsville Church of God in Christ, 220 South Marsalis Ave., Sunday, January 11, 7:00 p.m. sharp. Don’t meet me there, beat me there. For more information, call Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church at 972-225-1704.

NOTES FROM UNION HOPE Midwives Serve God Exodus 1:8-21 Our lesson Sunday helped us to understand that in our daily occupation there is a way to serve God. We saw that the glory of man is fading. After Joseph’s death there arose a King that did not know Eld. Lloyd Joseph or his God given T. Morgan wisdom that saved Egypt from famine. This king feared the Israelites because of their numbers and fear caused him to command a form of genocide. He ordered the midwives to kill the boy babies born to the Israelite Women. He knew if you cut off the males of a race that race is weakened and unable to reproduction after its kind, and the women can easily be assimilated into society. Today young black men are incarcerated, killed, in greater number than any race, our women are having

www.dfwelitenews.com

abortions at an alarming rate this have reduced the number of African Americans. These midwives refused to obey the king and Israel continued to multiply. In their civil disobedience they served God and preserved a nation. Friend what you are doing as a means of serving God? Our sermon was delivered by our beloved pastor Eld.L.T.Morgan from the subject “The seeking Savior” Luke 19:1-10. Zacchaeus the tax collector wanted to see Jesus without Jesus seeing him but to his amazement when Jesus approached the tree where he was Jesus called him by name. The Lord knows your name and where you are at all times. This is the only time in the gospels where Jesus invited himself to anyone’s house. But he says to everyone in Rev.3:20 behold I stand at the door and knock. The wonder of salvation is that we were not looking for the Lord but he loved us and came seeking to save all that was lost. Be Blessed!

Daphne L. Session Sworn in as Houston County Attorney Written by Maxine Session Crockett, TX. - Daphne L. Session was sworn in as Houston County Attorney on January 1, 2009. The state of Texas is divided into 254 counties. Miss Session is one of only three black county attorneys in the history of the state of Texas and the first black female. 11:00 AM on January 1, 2009, the District Court Room at the Houston County Court House was filled to capacity with Houston County Officials, their families and well wishers. It was an emotional moment for Attorney Daphne L. Session, her family and friends as the honorable Pam Foster Fletcher, Judge 349th Judicial District, administered the oath of office to Miss Session. It had been a long and difficult year and a half of endless campaigning to get to this moment. But she was finally there and had finally opened the doorway

for other African Americans by demonstrating that it could be done. May 2006 she became the first African American to open a private practice law office in Cherokee County and Houston Daphne L. Session County and prior to that the first African American Assistant District Attorney in both Anderson County and Houston County. Daphne feels that what she has accomplished is nothing out of the ordinary. In private practice she has taken on many challenges to defend her clients both private pay and court appointed and as a prosecutor seeing that justice was administered

fairly. She understands well that the stereotypical image of an East Texas Prosecutor is not that of an African American or a woman. Miss Session is the daughter of Rusk City Councilman Walter Session and wife Maxine Session. She was born and raised in Rusk. Daphne graduated Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice and Texas Tech School of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree in 1999. Other newly elected Houston County officials sworn in were Donna Kaspar, District Attorney; Pam Foster Fletcher, District Judge; Roger Dickey, Commissioner Pct. 1; Pat Perry, Commissioner Pct. 3; Darrel Bobbitt, Sheriff; Dannette Millican, Tax Assessor-Collector; Morris Luker, Commissioner Pct 1; and Kenneth “Red” Smith Constable Pct. 2.

This Can Be God Wants To Give You A Do Over For 2009 From The Mount . Your Year Deuteronomy 4:9 leave behind. Leave your resent- out to achieve, but you have not REV JOHNNY KING

Are you wishing for a great New Year? Are you just hoping or are you doing some planning? Are you considering your options or waiting for whatever options might come your way? What we really should be asking ourselves at the start of 2008 is what we can do to make it a great year. We are filled with hopes and dreams and plans at the start of each New Year. But a new year in itself holds no magic or power to help us be better. We are accountable for our actions. We are accountable to others. And that means we are responsible for what we do. We are free to make choices and take responsibility for what we choose. I have always been proud of America as a "can do" nation. Our history pages are filled with examples of Americans who started with little but their own ambition and imagination and who worked hard to build successful lives. We need to preserve our "can do" legacy and protect against a temptation to rely on Geraldine government proDavidsongrams or other wellHooker intentioned efforts that chip away at our values of self-reliance. We never do anyone a favor by shielding them from accountability and responsibility. People live in different circumstances and face varying temptations and obstacles. But I believe God has given us talents and free will to make choices. We all are accountable to someone. We all need to take responsibility for our actions. Accountability and responsibility can be a bit daunting to those who feel more comfortable having choices made for them. But taking responsibility for our actions actually liberates us by putting us more in control for improving our lives. You are in the driver's seat of your life. You can navigate the road ahead and choose which ways to turn and when to stop or proceed. All of our most common New Year's resolutions require a choice and responsibility. The smoker needs to choose to quit and snuff out that last cigarette. A resolution to lose weight is a choice to eat a healthier diet and exercise. A better income is a choice to pursue a different career or earn a college degree. We can wish and hope and wait to see what a new year brings. Or we can choose to be accountable for our actions and responsible for our own lives. We can blame our circumstances or choose to change them. We can hope to be in the right place at the right time or choose to put ourselves there. We can choose to focus on our doubts or on our dreams. Or, to sum it up using the title of one of my speeches, we can "Try or Cry." The idea that the start of a new year automatically holds the promise of a brighter future usually leads only to disappointment. The idea that you can choose the start of a new year as a time to take action can begin to create a brighter future. This year, make a choice to be accountable to all those who count on you. Be responsible for how you live today and how you might live better tomorrow. A Happy New Year is a choice you can make.

PAGE 6

"Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to Henry Nelson your children and to their children after them." What is the one thing most people have in common at the New Year? Most of us make resolutions, don't we? One young boy asked his father what his New Year's resolution was, and his father said he was going to do everything possible in the New Year to make his mother very happy. The boy asked his mother what hers was, and she said, "To do everything possible to make sure your father keeps his resolution." Why do we make those things anyway? We make them because there are areas in our lives we are either unhappy with, or areas in our lives we want to be better. This is one of those very few times when everybody, believers and non-believers alike, are going to be doing the exact same thing at the exact same time: Leaving one place and going into another. Of course, I am talking about leaving 2008 and entering 2009. So, what are you planning on leaving behind as you enter the new year? When we leave 2008, I think we should leave it completely. When we pray, we often take our needs to the Lord and ask His help in dealing with them. And then what do we do? Instead of leaving them with Him, we take them back with us as we finish praying. We need to learn to leave things where they belong. If 2008 really is a year of completion for you, don't you think you should learn to leave some things completely? What are some of the things we need to leave behind? I think it can be summed up by just saying that anything in our lives that keep us from fully focusing on the Lord should be left behind. Being a Christian means to always be going forward. Have you ever noticed how we always talk about our walk? We talk about our walk in life; our walk of faith; and walk with the Lord by its very nature, walking means moving forward. And as you move forward, you are always doing two things. You leave one place and go into another. As you leave, let us leave behind those parts of ourselves that do us no good. Here are some suggestions as to what you might choose to

ment behind. Each of us resents something. You might resent something you have said and done, or you might resent what someone else has said and done. But along with resentment comes unforgiveness and unforgiveness is a very dangerous thing to keep in our lives. Jesus said that if you forgive, God will forgive you, but if you do not forgive, God will not forgive you. Now, you must understand that to forgive does not mean the same thing as to forget. You cannot erase your memories, but you can erase your resentment. Amen! I would suggest that you just look at things from a different perspective. Instead of looking at your resentment from the negative side, start looking at it from the positive side. In other words, when you remember those things, as you surely will, look at them as an example of what not to ever feel again. Understanding where they will lead you should be enough encouragement to do so. So forget those things which hurt you and forgive those people who did or said them. I like the old saying: "Look lovingly upon your enemies, for it is you who have made them." You choose to dislike people, based upon what you like or think. You must realize that you are not the perfect examples, so you should not hold others accountable to your standards. Did you know that if you stoop low enough to begrudge others, they win! So make a decision to leave your resentment behind. Amen! You have to leave your worries behind. Worries are very much like rocking chairs. They give you something to do, but they never take you anywhere while you are doing it. You only worry about two things: Things you can change and things you cannot change. Why waste time doing something that not only hurts us and never helps us? When we worry, it ends up taking over your every thought and it becomes the predominate thought of our lives. Yet, it is also worry that causes mental illness, stress, and many other things that destroy your lives. Worry has killed more people than hard work ever did. Worry is the cause of fear. So, leave your worries behind as you enter the New Year and leave your failures behind. You try so hard to be the best you can be, but you do not always succeed. It is in those times when you do not succeed, that you get discouraged because you have failed, but what have you failed in? You may not have achieved just what we originally set

www.dfwelitenews.com

failed. The only time you fail is when you do not try to do anything! You need to understand that God has called us to have faith long before He ever called us to achieve. We are called to be in Christ, and as long as we are in Him, we are successful. The ancient Israelites never seemed to get it right. They would all turn toward God and worship Him and everything in their lives would drastically improve. But after a couple of hundred years, they would turn their backs on Him again and see doom visit them and their nation. But, we are told that God will turn our failure into success, if we allow Him fully into our lives. 1st Kings 8:33-34 says, "When your people, Israel, have been defeated by enemies because they sinned against you, and when they turn back to you and confess your name, then you will hear from Heaven, and you will forgive their sins and bring them back to the land of their forefathers." Amen! When we as a nation, or as individuals, have strayed from our Lord, we will find failure in our lives. But when we turn back once again to Him, He will hear our pleas and He will restore us to success, for He is a God of restoration. You have to let go of the past and learn to grab hold of the future. Each New Year is a

Biggie was in love with her and that Ms. Wallace, whom she reportedly still supports with 5% of her royalties is in total denial! Did you see the historic moment was created at the White House Wednesday as all four living U.S. presidents joined President-elect Barack Obama for a meeting to discuss the world's challenges. "This is an extraordinary gathering," Obama said, during a photo-op in the Oval Office with Geor ge H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and J i m m y Carter. Rapper T.I. wrote a check for $8,000 in c o u r t Tuesday to Rapper T.I. pay an overdue layer bill for the mother of two of his sons, telling a judge the debt was an oversight. It's part of his on-going child support case with 2nd baby momma Lashon Dixon. Dixon wants a stipend equal to T.I.'s success. She currently recieves 2,000 per month for TIP'S two sons. T.I. is expected to be sentenced for gun charges and spend a year or so in jail startin in March. Dr. Jan Adams, the nonboard certified plastic surgeon who operated on Kanye West's mother the day before she died, received a year-long jail sentence for drunk driving. Adams pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of DUI. My 17 year old Danielle told me that Lil Wayne was a part of 70 of the top 125 hottest songs in 2008. I believe it, as every time I turned the radio on, Lil Wayne was sing/rappin on his or somebody's song. Congrats to Monster Rapper Lil Wayne, his latest CD, "Tha Carter III," sold almost 3 million copies last year to become 2008's best-selling album. Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs: George Foreman is 59, Dallas Cowboy Robert Newhouse is 58, Katie Couric is 51, R. Kelly 42 and Sean Paul 36. Continued from Page 6 representative thing. It represents to us that there is a whole range of new opportunities for us; an unlimited chance to have a better life. At the start of every year, you see magazines publishing predictions on how they think the world will be in the upcoming year. Some of these predictions have been accurate, but most have fallen way short of being true. How do you think you will fare in the New Year? Will it actually be a year of new beginnings for you? Will you have the wherewithal to analyze yourselves honestly, so that you will know what areas to leave behind and

what things to bring with you? You need to be very wise as you step through the doorway of time. If you are going to make the best of the future, you need to understand a few things. The first thing you need to do is to really get a grip on is your time, because your time on earth is limited. Psalms 90:10 states, "We live to be about 70 or we may live to be 80, if we stay healthy. But all that time is filled with trouble and sorrow. The years quickly pass, and then you are gone. Amen!

Clarence Henry Gentry Clarence Henry Gentry, also known as Gentry, was born on July 8, 1915 in Dallas, Texas to Robert and Margaret Gentry. Gentry departed this life on S a t u r d a y, Jan. 3, 2009, from complications of Alzheimer’s. He was born and raised in Dallas and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He was an active member of the Booker T. Washington/Lincoln High School Alumni Association. Gentry was one of Dallas’ first award-winning reporter, writer and journalist- of-color. His work appeared in many local and state-wide publications including the Dallas Express, the Dallas Post Tribune and the Houston Informer. Gentry and the late photographer R.C. Hickman often worked side-byside chronicling in both words and photos, much of Dallas’ civil

rights movement and its segregated 40s, 50s and 60s. Gentry was the only black reporter in Jim Wells County in 1948. He was also the only black reporter to cover the devastating Waco tornado in 1953. He refused to use the service elevator at the opening of Houston’s Shamrock Hotel in the late 1950s. The stalemate was broken when Informer publisher Carter Wesley telephoned hotel owner Glenn McCarthy, who escorted Gentry to the front lobby elevator. In 1940, Gentry was refused entrance to Dallas’ Adolphus Hotel to interview Wendell Wilkie, Republican candidate for president. He called Wilkie’s room and the presidential candidate came down and led Gentry to his room for an exclusive interview. In 1956, Democratic candidate Estes Kefauver came down to the lobby for an interview when Gentry was denied access to his suite in the Baker Hotel. In 1990, Gentry and 19 other black Dallas leaders were honored as Living Legends by the Junior Black Academy of Arts

and Letter. Others honored with him included Hickman; former St. Luke Community United Methodist Church pastor Rev. Zan Holmes, former Dallas City Council members Elsie Faye Heggins and Al Lipscomb and former KKDA-AM radio personality and WFAA-TV Channel 8 news anchor Iola Johnson. Gentry spent the majority of his life in Dallas and later moved to Houston in 1992. He returned to live in Dallas in 2003.
