Why You Should Not Hinder Children From Coming To Jesus. Mark 10:12-16 “People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciple rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder Henry Nelson them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth; anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.’ And he took the children in his arms, and put his hands on them and blessed them” After watching the terrible situation in Haiti I was overwhelmed by the grief and despair that exits there. My heart goes out to the children and I pray that God makes a way for them. God is the answer in troubled times and good times. Amen! In the ancient world, children had no status. Back then a person could literally throw children away by exposing unwanted infants at birth. There is a famous letter written in 1 B.C. by a poor laborer to his pregnant wife in Alexandria, advising her to keep the child if it was boy and to cast it out if it was a girl. The unscrupulous would collect exposed children and raise them to be gladiators or prostitutes and even disfigure them to enhance their value as beggars This was the world that Jesus lived in a world that did not have time for children. You may think you are much different than the disciples who tried to keep the children away from Jesus), but maybe some of us resemble them more than we would like to admit. Sometimes we hinder children from coming to Jesus. How? There are at least three ways: (1) By your attitude “Children are a bother” messy; noisy; do not put money in the offering plate; waste of time, money, and energy to reach them); (2) by your example: “Do what I say, not what I do.” Children can learn hypocrisy and negativity from the example of others in the church’ especially parents); (2) by our theology; “Children cannot understand the gospel and be saved.” Here are three reasons why you and I should not hinder children from coming to Jesus: 1. Jesus values children just as much as adults. “People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them” Notice that it does not say “parents” were bringing them to Jesus. I am sure most of these people were parents, but probably

PAGE 2

some were not. Bringing children to Jesus is for everyone, not just parents. Some of the greatest ministers to children are those who never had children. Among them was Jesus. “But the disciples rebuked them” “Them” refers to the people bringing the children to Jesus. Why? We do not know for sure. Maybe they thought Jesus was too busy or too tired to be bothered with children. They probably held the view of their culture: “Children should be seen and not heard.” What was Jesus’ reaction? “When Jesus saw this, he was indignant.” To be “indignant” means to be “angry or annoyed at the unfairness of unreasonableness of somebody or something” The King James Version says “he was much displeased.” Jesus was not just a little upset; He was very angry in a good way. Why was Jesus indignant? It was because He loves the little children. To Him, they are not a bother; they are not unimportant; they are not a waste of time. Jesus wants to bless the little children. How old were these children? We read that they were “little children.” Some of them were small enough for Jesus to pick them up in His arms. Luke writes in His Gospel that some of them were “babies.” Amen! 2. Jesus invites children to come to Him. Children are more likely to come to Jesus. Compare: “Make adults come in” it says in Luke 14:23 and “Let the little children come to me.” Maybe I am making too much out of the word “let,” but it is a fact that leading an adult to Christ is much more difficult than leading a child to Him. One of our main strategies as a church should be to reach young people for Christ. Children have their whole lives to live for Jesus. Most children can understand enough of the gospel to be saved. I believe children can understand that they are sinners do bad things, that Jesus died on the cross for their sins and rose again, that Jesus will save them if they ask Him to. James Dobson has said, “Do not just sit back and hope your children, grandchildren, or children in your Sunday school class, youth group, or whatever trust in Christ. You have to actively pursue their salvation. Amen! The Apostle Paul wrote in Timothy 3:14-15; it says, “Continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have know the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” Amen! Some people, questioning the validity of childhood conversions, might argue, “Many people who trusted in Christ as children never go on to live for Him.” That’s true, but it’s also true of many adults.

Jesus talked about this in His parable of the sowersoils in Mark 4:1-20. Amen! 3. Jesus says children have the right characteristics for receiving salvation. “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it” Jesus was not saying that every child is saved. The Bible is clear that the moment a child is conceived, he or she inherits a sinful nature. Psalms 51:5 says “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me” Amen! But what happens to children who die? I think we are given a clue in 2nd Samuel 12:18-23. After his infant son died, David said, “I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me” David expected to go to heaven when he died, so David’s statement can be interpreted as meaning that David believed his son was in heaven. I believe that God shows mercy to those who because of age or mental deficiency are incapable of either faith or willful unbelief Jonah 4:11says, “more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left”. God does this not because they are deserving of heaven no one is, but because in His grace He chose to save them. I do not believe there is an exact age when a child

becomes responsible for trusting in Jesus often called the age of accountability. I think there is a condition of accountability every child and person is different, not an age of accountability. Jesus was not saying that you have to be childish in order to be saved. Jesus was saying that you have to become like a child in order to be saved. The key word is “like.” We need childlike faith in order to be saved. I believe there are two qualities of this faith that are necessary: (1) humility or feeling of helplessness and (2) dependency. Matthew 5:3 says, “Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” To be “poor in spirit” is to acknowledge one’s sinfulness or spiritual bankruptcy. Amen! Mark 10:25 says “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God”. Rich people are generally not humble and dependent; they are usually proud and self-reliant. Because of this, it is very difficult for them to become poor in spirit and depend on Jesus for salvation. Now you know why you should not hinder children from coming home to Jesus. Amen!

A Re-Cap to the 24th Annual Sam’s Club / Elite News / American Airlines Parade and Celebration In this day of political correctness and proper protocol, we at the Elite news is none the less excited and Joyous to offer an apology for mistakenly leaving out some of our sponsors and participants in the 24th Annual MLK Parade Celebration, “please charge this most egregious error to our quick pens and NOT our Hearts, Stated Parade Chairman Jordan Blair and Parade Founder William Blair remember that this is the “PEOPLES PARADE IT IS ALL INCLUSIVE AND NON-EXCLUSIVE, WE LOOK TO EXCLUDE NO ONE” as this is a Day on Not a Day Off. Black History: 1 Month - 365 Days of the Year By Lola Searcy Monday, February 1, 2010 marked the beginning of Black History Month in America. It is the time of year when we as Americans, especially African Americans take time to look back and reflect on the major contributions African Americans have made and are still making to this country and to the world. Even though February is the only month designated as Black History Month, we should remember that our history—Black History, is worthy of and should be celebrated every day of every year. We, (all Americans) must remember that there could never have been an American history without Black History! You don’t believe me? Scientist discovered the first living cell in AFRICA!! That’s right, AFRICA, the mother land. The land of our ancestors! Knowing this, it is amazing how little African Americans know about our own history! Especially our young people. They don’t know about the vast number of contributions African Americans made and are still making to this country and to the world. We don’t know because it is not taught in the classrooms, and sadly, we don’t even teach it in our homes! Far too many parents and African Americans make the mistake of rely-

ing on the educational system which is predominately white to teach our children about Black history. And, for the most part, the only famous or prominent African/Black Americans they teach about is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and George Washington Carver. Don’t misunderstand me, a lot if not all of the rights and privileges African Americans / Blacks enjoy today are due largely in part to the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And, lest we forget the more than 325 uses for peanuts George Washington Carver discovered. Everything from cooking oil to printer’s ink. He found more than 20 used for sweet potatoes and pecans, including synthetic rubber and material for paving highways. And I read that I have George Washington Carver to thank for the make-up I wear! When African Americans take to time to learn and study our history, we would really be surprised to learn just how intelligent, creative, inventive and hard-working we are as a group of people. Contrary to popular belief, we can do much, much more than run fast, dribble a basketball, catch and throw a football and hit gamewinning homeruns. - or sink a golf ball. As African Americans, we must take time out of every day to teach our children about our

beautiful culture, our rich heritage and our history! We must tell them about inventors like, Garrett Morgan who invented the stop light and the gas mask! Tell our children about Benjamin Banneker, who designed and created the first working clock. Mr. Banneker was also the principle surveyor/architect who designed our Nation’s capital city of Washington, D.C. And by now, I’m sure you know that The White House, now occupied by our Nation’s first African American President, Barack H. Obama, was also built by slaves. And did you also know that The White House is said to be one of the most beautiful and structurally sound buildings in the world? Imagine that! You think maybe our ancestors built it to last knowing that one day one of their decedents would live in it? When we take the time to learn our history, we would truly be amazed at what we as a people have accomplished. African American hands have designed, created, and invented the tools, equipment that makes our lives enjoyable, functioning and viable today! For instance, Harlem born Dr. Patricia Bath. She received her Medical degree from Howard University. She is dedicated to the

Love Enough To Let Go

Prayer Closet

In the parable of the prodigal son, we learned that God will use every tool available (even pigs) to draw His children Home. Our highest desire for our children must be to see them secure in the arms of God. Notice that in this parable there's no mention of the father between the time the son left and when he returned home. The father appears to have watched his son leave and then simply waited for his return. The father must have known of his son's condition while away. Was the father lazy and uncaring? Was this simply the product of a macho culture that didn't show much emotion? Geraldine Davidson-Hooker Or rather, was this a father who truly knew how God's grace could work a difficult situation toward a wonderful good? As painful as it must have been, the father allowed God to complete His work - even though it meant his son would actually long to eat with the pigs! And yes, this father loved his son. When someone we love goes astray, let's continue to lift them up in prayer - always let them know they are loved and continually speak a gentle message of truth. Let's NEVER give up hope, but let's allow God to finish the glorious work He’s begun. Let's trust Him above ALL else and love enough to let go.

PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON

A Message from State Representative Barbara Mallory Caraway The Nation Celebrates Black History Month

ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

Have you ever discovered the value of quietness in effective prayer? We live in a world of confusion and endless rushing to and from. Each century of our time has been more turbulent and noisy than the last. Since Adam, man has allowed the cares of life to disconnect his soul from God. Pastor In the midst of a Clarence generation that had forHenderson gotten God, Elijah became so discouraged that he asked God to take his life. God came to Elijah in still small voice! When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and prayed! That is God talked to Elijah and Elijah talked to God. In the midst of the quiet time he had with God, there came a deliverance from discouragement and torment. The psalmist knew the value of quietness in effective prayer. Indicated in Psalm 37:7, “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him. Psalm 46;10 says, “Be Still and know that I am God.”

Hodge, Continued from Page 6 $27,000 is reported to have come from Brian and Cheryl Potashnik, who paid her rent, utilities and bought carpet for a house she owned on Abrams Road in Dallas. In exchange, prosecutors alleged, Hodge wrote letters endorsing the Potashnik’s effort to get lucrative tax credits for their low-income housing development projects. Also listed in the plea documents, from 2001 – 2005, Hodge had income totaling $41,465 that was derived in part, from campaign contributions she used for personal benefits. Hodge neglected to report this additional income on her federal return for those years. According to published reports, as part of her plea agreement, prosecutors agree to drop all charges against her when she is sentenced. At Wednesday’s hearing, U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn said she wanted sentencing to occur as soon as possible. Stating, “Ms. Hodge will have pleaded guilty today to a felony and will still be representing the district,” Lynn said. “I’m not real keen on that notion.” While Representative Hodge will suspend her campaign, it does in no way seal the deal for Representative Hodge’s sole opponent, Dallas lawyer Eric Johnson. Hodge’s name will still appear on the ballot, and given that fact that she has held the 100th district house seat for more than 14 years, she has something Mr. Johnson does not…name recognition. While a felony conviction will prevent Representative Hodge from holding public office, there are still those loyal supporters who could very well continue to campaign for her, and show up on Election Day to re-elect her. If that happens, and her guilty plea is accepted by the courts, under the law, a felony conviction will disqualify her for the November general election. At that time, the Democratic precinct chairs in District 100, would pick their party’s candidate. And since there are several contested precinct chair races in the 100th district, this would make for some very interesting political drama. With the suspension of the Hodge campaign, it appears to pave the way for challenger Eric Johnson to win the March 2 Democratic primary Meanwhile, rumors of a lack of trust and animosity for Eric Johnson continue to surface among Hodge constituents, who accuse Mr. Johnson of not dealing with the issues facing the 100th district, but he has instead focused on Representative Hodge’s legal woes rather than campaigning on a platform that benefits

February 5, 2010

the residents of the 100th district. In a statement issued Wednesday morning, Mr. Johnson had this to say, “As a longtime resident of House District 100, I want to thank Terri Hodge for her service to our district.” “My wife, Nakita, and I will continue to keep Ms. Hodge and her family in our prayers.” Court room observers say that while Hodge choked up several times during the half-hour hearing, as a condition of her plea deal, she agreed to cooperate fully with federal prosecutors. Attorney Jeff Kearney stated, she “shall give truthful and complete information and/or testimony concerning her participation in the offense of conviction.” While it is not yet known what information Hodge will give federal authorities, it is going to be interesting to find out just what else Representative Hodge has to say. Representative Hodge will close her district office in an orderly manner and resign at the time she is sentenced. “I freely admit that I violated the federal income tax laws in this regard, and I am prepared and willing to accept the consequences of my actions”. “As a result of my guilty plea to a criminal tax violation, I will not be able to continue to serve in the Texas House of Representatives. Therefore, I cannot in good conscience continue to seek re-election and I believe that the only appropriate action for me to take is to immediately terminate my campaign activities,” Representative Hodge stated. “I want to take this time to express my remorse to my colleagues in the legislature, my friends, and my family for my actions, she said in a statement. “Most of all, I want to apologize to all the citizens of District 100 for letting them down.” “My prayer is that my successor will stand up and fight for the people of our district in the future.” She further stated, “because of ongoing legal proceedings in my case, I will not make any further public statement concerning this matter until the Court has assessed my sentence. I ask that the press respect my request that my family and I not be contacted for any further statement concerning this matter,” Representative Terri Hodge also stated. We will continue to follow this story and we will respect Ms. Hodge’s wishes and give her and her family the privacy and courtesy they have asked for. And while, we are saddened and disheartened by the incident, our thoughts and prayers go out to Representative Hodge and her entire family!

Sitting around the barber shop talking Black History month came up, it reminded me of the time when University of Houston came into then Southwest Conference. The C o n f e r e n c e Leon Simon Champion always went to the Cotton Bowl, The coach at Arkansas said “since Houston came to the conference they think the Cotton Bowl belong to them”. Well The NFL Probably think since the Rooney Rule the African American coaches think the Super Bowl is their’s……….. oops. 3 coaches in 4 years. If the Colts win that will be 2 years in a row. On a more serious note, looking at the States top 100 football players and their commitment to colleges, of the top 100 players 49 either signed with out of state schools or committed to sign. I think these young men need better guidance in picking schools. Lets forget the NFL there is only 32 teams and if they replaced the whole roster (53players) ever year, that would only be 1696 jobs. So now lets look at a school with the future in mind. Lets forget that your dad is a USC fan, or you like the uniforms at Oregon, or you’re an Adrian Peterson fan, and he went to Oklahoma. lets not think about how many times Notre Dame is on Tv, or how many guys from the U (Miami) go to the league. I know its fun to go to the SEC, an beat one of your buddies that went to Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, A&M etc. or go to Oklahoma and beat the Longhorns .Go to Florida and beat your friend that run on the mile relay at Baylor all of those scenarios are fine, if you’re a high round draft choice an can feed your family, like Arian Peterson and some of those other guys that were fortunate enough to go to the league. It’s time these young men quit thinking about ESPN. And start thinking about a family, and there is a good chance they will have one or will eventually get one. Its Fun to beat Michigan if you went to Ohio State, but how much fun is it to look for a job if you live in Michigan an went to Ohio State. How about that laugh you had while at Oklahoma when you beat Texas, now that guy you gave that down with the Horns sign to ,is the personal manager and you’re applying for a job and he shoot you the thumbs down sign. There are some Tony Dungy one ,that

“ A Strange Land Situation — Psalm 137 situation is when you are taken to the hospital, and the Doctor tells you there is nothing he can do to save you. Now, that’s a strange land situation. A strange land situation is when you receive a call in the wee wee hours and one of your children just died, or one of them just odeed on drugs. It’s a strange land situation when one of your love ones has just left you because of death, and you have a lonely spot in your heart. But, the good news is the affirmation of the sovereignty of God has a way of defying context. The Lord’s song goes deeper than rhetoric and the rhythm, it goes deeper than any sea, its transcultural, and it’s deeper than context, deeper than culture and circumstance. Everyone who has already gone through circumstances of despair will confirm to this statement. When we get into these kinds of situations we need to get our Bibles and turn to these scriptures: The Lord is my light and my salvation of whom shall I fear. Fret not thyself because of evil does because they will soon be cut off. “I will lift up my eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. “We could sing, make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. I guess you know that we have already kept the music, we were able to sing: I’m so glad trouble don’t last always, and when they did not have

shoes on their feet, and ragged clothes or no clothes on their backs, they were still able to sing: “ I’ve got a robe, you’ve got a robe, all of God’s children got a robe. We came from a people who had a defiant faith. It looks hostility in the face and declares it can’t win. Our faith looks diversity in the face and proclaims, we will ultimately triumph. We believe that, “I must tell Jesus, all of my troubles, I cannot bear the burdens alone. A man by the name of Thomas Dorsey found himself in a strange land situation one day, so he picked up his pen and mirrored defiant faith in the word, “Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn. For your information I believe in the NOT YET . “ When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. I know one thing. “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine; oh what a foretaste of glory divine; Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of His spirit washed in His blood. This I know, and I can sing it in any Strange Land Situation. Can you do the same? Let us not forget to read our Bibles. May God bless you real good, and may He keep you in His loving care.

We have been writing out of Psalm 137 for the past two weeks because there is so much substance tied into it. When we sing the Lord’s song, when we affirm by starting a decided style of rhythm, rhyme and rhetoric we really seek Gene Turner to mirror something Out of the Eyes of more full of depth and a Layman quality. We want to announce that somehow, someway God will transform that which I am passing through. A strange land situation sooner or later comes to everybody, or every person’s house. We as Black people in this country have suffered through some strange land situation. “They sung through difficult times’ it’s our nature to hold on to our song, to hold on to our music when things and people threaten and defy and try to destroy our very existence. Strange land situations will come, and they will come to your house as well. If you think strange land situations won’t come to your house, you just keep on living. What is a strange land situation? A strange land situation is when you get a pink slip from your job after working there for 35 or 40 years. A strange land

The Dallas Independent School District Athletics Department hosted its Annual “Meet the Signees” media event on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at noon, at the Ellis Davis Field House located at 9191 South Polk Street, where they recognized and introduced all of the Dallas ISD senior student athletes who have signed college scholarships for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year. Students signed scholarships in Track and Field, Football, Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball and Basketball. All of the signees were introduced and honored during the event. The National Letter of Intent Signing Day marks the beginning of an important phase in the life of many Dallas ISD student athletes who have worked so hard, both academically and

CITY BEAT NOTES FROM UNION HOPE

History, Continued from Page 4 treatment and prevention of blindness. Dr. Bath is the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical invention. She invented the Laserphaco probe for the treatment of cataracts. And speaking of Doctors, where would we be without Dr. Charles Richard Drew? Dr. Drew started the idea of a blood bank and a system for long-term preservation of blood plasma. He found that plasma kept longer than whole blood. His ideas revolutionized the medical profession and has saved many, many lives! E lijah McCoy is the engineer and inventor behind the expression, “the Real McCoy. He invented several high-quality industrial inventions, especially the steam engine lubricator. He is known as the “Real McCoy because his inventions were real, authentic and highquality! George Grant, an avid golfer and one 2 African American to graduate from Harvard Dental School in 1870, received a patent in 1899 for an improved golf tee. Maybe it’s no coincidence that Tiger Woods is

such a golfing phenom! As I was researching and writing this story, I found countless pages of African American inventors and inventions! So this article by no means even begins to scratch the surface as it relates to the significant contributions African Americans have made! That’s the reason our history should be celebrated 24/7! Every day! One month of reflection and study is not nearly enough! Black History – African American history is a history lesson that should be told every day! Every waking moment there is something we can and should tell our children and our families about who we are and from whence we came! For the next 3 weeks, the Staff here at Elite News will share with our readers prominent African Americans in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area who are helping to write our history! We will talk to prominent politicians, pastors, athletes, educators, entertainers, sportsmen and women, etc. who are helping to write the history of this city!

“Revealed in Rejection The Church school lesson “Revealed in Rejection Matt.13:54-58 show Jesus experiencing what almost every pastor, preacher, and teacher has in some way experienced. In the lesson Jesus comes back home and go to the synagogue Eld. Lloyd to worship where He T. Morgan read and expounded on the text the people started asking how did know so much when he had never attended any Rabbinical school, they were amazed by his miracles, after all he had been a village carpenter for many years, they knew his mother, brothers and sister who still lived in Nazareth. It is strange that people who knew you when you were young that grew up with you, when God change your life and call you into ministry have a hard time accepting you and your ministry. To some people

you are too young, they changed your diapers, fed and burped you, and they were reading the Bible before you could read therefore you can’t tell them anything. This city missed the blessings they could have enjoyed because they could not accept the vessel it was in. Paul said it best in 2 Cor 4:7But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. Our morning message was delivered by our beloved pastor Eld. L.T.Morgan from the subject “The I AMness of God Ex.3:1-15. God called Moses on the back side of the desert and introduced himself as “I Am who I Am this translated into Hebrew is YAHWEH a name so Holy that it was never pronounced for fear of profaning its Holiness. God want us to know that not only was he the God of yesterday but he is God of all the tomorrows. We should rejoice in knowing that God is a never changing God. Be Blessed

45th Annual C.A.W. Clark Human Relations Banquet By Jordan Blair The IMA has a long-standing history of leadership, civic involvement and program activity throughout communities of the Dallas metroplex. The IMA – comprised of ministers of Dallas’ churches – has a mission: To improve, enhance and maintain quality of life for underserved communities by promoting education, scholarships, community and economic development; physical and mental health, employment and other community uplift initiatives through the distribution of philanthropic funds through religious institutions. Providing health referrals, maintaining food pantries to help feed the needy, assisting with utility bills, ministering to the incarcerated and other support services have been critical elements of IMA’s mission for more than 50 years. 45th Annual C.A.W. Clark Human Relations Banquet Overview

This annual banquet of more than 1000 participants provides an opportunity to educate public corporations and individuals about the goals, programs and mission of IMA. More than 1,500 supporters attended the 2009 banquet. Besides helping to offset the cost of providing community support services, each year IMA awards scholarships to deserving high school graduates throughout its service area. The IMA presents the prestigious “Prince of Preachers Award” named in honor of Dr. C. A. W. Clark, longtime national and local, civic and religious leader. The recipient this year is Dr. Curtis W. Wallace, Pastor of The Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church here in Dallas, TX. In 2010 a Dallas Independent School District principal will receive the coveted “Education Award”. That principal is none other than the principal of the Exemplary Charles Rice Learning Center, Alpher Garrett-Jones. Recognition is given for Dallas area outstanding service to community in several cate-

A fresh voice! By Jordan Blair On Sunday, January 31 Farouk Shami, the next governor of the state of Texas came to Luby’s on Hampton, the Elite News hosted a small gathering of entrepreneurs, business men and women, and other pillars of the community to introduce the next governor of Texas, Farouk Shami. Mr. Shami brings with him a host of good ideas on creating jobs for Dallas and Houston and boosting the economy for the state of Texas. Mr. Shami is a very successful business man, employing over 1,200 people and knows what candidate for goverit takes to run the Texas. According to Shami, entire communities have been ignored for too long when it comes to economic growth in Texas. Farouk Shami has a plan that will ensure that every Texan has the opportunity to work hard and live the American Dream. Farouk has made a guarantee that no politician has ever made before, if his plan doesn’t create 100,000 new jobs in Texas in his first two years in office he will immediately resign and pay the state ten million dollars. According to Farouk, he will put his money where his mouth is because he has experience in creating jobs and he knows how to build a business from the ground up. He’d like to use his experience to re-build the economy in Texas. Farouk also has grand ideals regarding education for our children. He believes that the future economic success of this state starts with ensuring every single Texas child, regardless of

gories with the “Healthcare Award” going to Mr. Patrick D. Bullocks, a Community Liaison for VITAS Innovative Hospice Care and an individual who has made a measurable impact in promoting wellness in the region. The President’s Award will be awarded to recipients Judge Marty Lowy and Dr. Tommy L. Brown who reflect leadership in sharing their time, resources and talent to help strengthen the community. Judge Lowy serves the 101st Civil District Court of Dallas County and Dr. Brown is the proud Pastor of Ervay Cedar Missionary Baptist Church. The IMA Human Relations Award is the signature award given each year to an exemplary civic, business or religious leader. The 2010 IMA Human Relations Award will be presented to a longtime civic servant who has served the Dallas area and entire state of Texas with distinction as an exemplary public servant. This signature award will be given to Mr. John Sharp, candidate for the U.S. Senate.

As shown, the IMA attempts to cover every aspect of the Dallas Community. 2010’s Minister of the Year is Pastor A.C. Stapleton of Shekinah Tabernacle Baptist Church as the Young Minister of the Year is awarded to Rev. Keith D. Ford of The Messias Church of God in Christ. Mrs. Linda Henderson-Johnson of Henderson’s Chicken and Dr. Corey Christopher Toney of CT’s Real Deal Bar B Que are the award recipients of the Business Award. Judge Mark Greenberg of Dallas County Court at Law 5 has been awarded the 2010 Civic Award and this year’s Community Service Award will be given to Rev. Chris L. Simmons of the Cornerstone Baptist Church and Dr. Gerald L Borders, retired Director of Public Affairs at Texas Instruments Incorporated. The C.A.W. Clark Human Relations Banquet will be held Friday, February 5, 2010 at the Dallas Trade Mart, 2100 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX. The time of the event is 7:00 pm.

Alpha Kappa Alpha has prevailed in lawsuit

where they live, has access to a top notch education. Farouk believes we must stop playing politics with the education of our youth and start preparing them for a future where they will compete globally. “Teachers and public schools are vital to our state and should be treated as such. We must provide students the opportunities and facilities they need to flourish in the 21st century economy. Beyond that, Farouk will fight to lower the dropout rate by ensuring our students have mentors who can help them see the value in receiving an education. Most importantly, he will dramatically increase Vocational/Technical training in our secondary schools to teach kids real life skills that can lead to a high paying job and help them become a productive part of the Texas workforce.”

Dear Sorors: Alpha Kappa Alpha has prevailed in the lawsuit filed by Joy Elaine Daley, et al. In a resounding denunciation of the action, the Superior Court of the District of Columbia tossed out the lawsuit and dismissed the case. In her ruling, Judge Natalia M. Combs Greene rejected Plaintiffs' suit on all counts and, in essence, ruled that the case had no merit and no substance. In essence, Alpha Kappa Alpha won! Writing in the Washington Business Journal, reporter Melissa Castro, noted that the judge was emphatic in her decision. "Judge Natalia Combs Greene used just 17 pages — and several pointed words — to eviscerate the claims of the eight AKA member-plaintiffs." The judge also accurately characterized the case as being "largely about several disgruntled AKA members." She dismissed the evidence presented as "unnecessary and frivolous exhibits, arguments, counts and facts." This victory underscores what the leadership has been saying all along: that this was a suit motivated by a personal vendetta against the leadership. The ruling confirms this. This triumph is an affirmation of the process and the structure of governance that has withstood the test of time for 102 years.

Our Founders bequeathed to us the gift of loyalty and a mandate to never exhibit the type of treasonous behavior that the Plaintiffs demonstrated. We do not revel in this victory because we have paid a dear price for it. This has been a painful saga in our history but one that could have been avoided had the Plaintiffs held their vows sacred and not violated the very rituals they pledged to uphold. There is a lesson in this for us and I urge the membership to view this legal action --and its outcome - as a wakeup call. Let's use this victorious occasion to revisit our sacred vows and recommit ourselves to the sanctity of Alpha Kappa Alpha and the strength of the sisterhood. This is what has sustained us for over 100 years and will continue to serve as a sturdy foundation as we begin our second century of sisterhood and service. Now, let's get ready for our biennial conference in July. Let's meet in St. Louis where we can connect and bond with one another in the way that has always made Alpha Kappa Alpha first in service…first in sisterhood. Sincerely, Soror Barbara A. McKinzie Supreme Basileus

“Ask the Undertaker” Ask the Undertaker: I am a single parent with only a minor daughter. There is no one I trust with her inheritance. I listen to your show and you mention that a minor beneficiary can not use my life insurance for my funeral services, because they cannot enter into a contract. I can not afford to purchase a preneed at this time. All I have is my job insurance. I do not want my daughter to worry about paying for my funeral expenses. What should I do? Dear Single Parent: Thank you for listening to the show. I commend your for being a responsible single parent and for being concerned about your daughter’s future. There is a way that you can use your life insurance for your funeral service and leave an inheritance for your daughter. I recommend that you do the following four things. The first thing that I would recommend is that you verify with your employer if your life insurance benefit is assignable. If the benefit is assignable, second thing is to decide the amount of money you would like to spend toward your funeral service. Third thing you would make the funeral home of your choice the beneficiary for that amount of you chose. The fourth thing is to make your daughter the beneficiary for the remainder, leaving her an inheritance.
