Dallas’ First Black Firefighter Recalls What It Means to Be Burned! By Brenda Thomas, Elite News Mr. Kenneth Parker became the first black firefighter in Dallas, Texas on November 19, 1969. Since then, there has been a few more firsts – like Ron Kirk, the first black Mayor of Dallas; Eddie Burns, the first black fire chief of Dallas, Texas; Terrell Bolton, the first black police chief of Dallas, Texas. As Kenneth Parker travels down memory lane, he recalls a lifetime that he experienced in the early 60’s. He remembers when the media reported John F. Kennedy, Sr. being assassinated, what happened to Medgar Evers, and how Martin Luther King, Jr. departed this life in a cruel assassination plot. Robert Kennedy, Sr. also left us in an untimely assassination, and so did Huey. There must have been an empty feeling felt by most Americans. Some thought all was lost. Mr. Parker remembers the time when H.L. Green’s was a central stop downtown and also going to the Majestic Theater downtown. We experienced some parts of a fake freedom at that time, little to our knowledge. We could go to the parks, work anywhere we chose, or attend the three high schools of our choice. We were allowed to go just about anywhere we wanted to go. Were we able to see the pot at the end of the rainbow? Well, maybe just a coin.

PAGE 2

Cadet Class, April 1976 Mr. Parker remembers also what Moses said to Pharaoh, the Lord said, “Let my people go,” Lincoln gave us our freedom when we were given the Emancipation Proclamation; Malcolm X said, “by any means necessary; Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream and saw the mountaintop and did in without violence; James Brown, the Godfather of Soul said “open up the door, and I’ll get it myself,” and now our own President Barack Obama tells us, “yes, we can,” and once we stuck together and went to the polls together as a nation of people, “yes, we did.” We felt good, energized, refreshed, and we had a different attitude. Now, we can go anywhere we want to go, do anything we need to do, get the education we need to get,

and be all that we can be. Mr. Kenneth Parker said that the door is not cracked any more, it stands wide open for us to step in. The message is real and we will never go back to that old way of life again. Parker leaves us with a few tips: 1. Love God and stay in His favor. Love yourself first, family second, and then those around you. 2. Get a good, solid education or attend some kind of trade school. Keep your family unit in tact and take care of them. 3. Do not try to keep up with the Jones’ – they are as broke as you; and don’t think about the grass being greener on the other side – it still needs to be mowed. 4. Have lots of fun. Keep smiling, and keep a stiff upper lip. The door is opened, the dream is now a reality, and the time is right now. This is a new generation. Write your check out, put in any amount you want and go cash it! Mr. Parker leaves us with this message, “The sun may not be shining for some of us right now, but the wind is sure blowing in our direction.” Put God first in your lives – always remember, “You are the victor and not the victim.”

Celebrating the Past, Embracing the Present, and Pressing On Toward the Future The 34th Annual Elite News Awards Triumphs Successfully By: Brenda Thomas, Elite News On Friday evening, February 27th 2009, at 7:30 PM, the Elite News presented another historical momentous celebration, culminating Black History Month in the shadow of President Barack Obama because of the moment our nation experienced on November 4, 2009 in the election of Barack Obama, our first Black President of the United States of America. The event was held at the Calvary Philadelphia Baptist Church, located at 4703 Sunnyvale, under the pastoral direction of Rev. Joe H. Moore, senior pastor. The Honorees and Awardees of the night were recognized for their contributions to our society collectively in Dallas and across the country the fabric of our Community is made up of people who are laboring and working diligently. These people are exactly what is needed to support various initiatives in the city in helping secure the growth of our Community. It is not any question that our Country and City are in for tough times and we really need to rally around re-raising America, but we must teach our people to celebrate Black History and people about us. When reflecting on the collective reasons we celebrate Black History month, we are spellbound at all the history our forbearers have left us to ponder, so when we teach our children the histo-

Sometimes we tend to forget just how strong the men and women who blazed the trail really had to and have to be and we are constantly on a search for more people. The purpose of this Awards Night Program was to recognize men and women who made life

better for others in the community. An extensive community search was made and some of the crème de la crème were selected as recipients of these awards. These particular people have shaped some of the lives of the city, state, country, and have served God and been obedient servants of the Master thru their unselfish and tireless efforts. As the program unfolded, Dr. William Blair, along with sons, Jordan and Darryl served in the capacity of being the Master of Ceremony. The theme of the evening was, “Why We Honor The Ones We Serve. The Golden Chain Baptist Church Male Chorus rendered a couple of song selections. The Abounding Grace Ministry under the direction of Ms. Devarah interpreted a song thru dance; whereas, the Strong Hands Ministry of Mime captivated the worshippers with an inspiring mime presentation. Larry Duncan, Trustee Board President of the Dallas County, School Board gave Mr. Blair and family their accolades for putting on such a fine program. Darryl Blair, youngest son of Mr. Blair, gave the official Welcome. There was also a rendition of a song from King, an aspiring young man with a promising future. Mrs. Debra Blair Abron recognized guests and fellow staff members.

Prayer Closet PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

If we fail to pray earnest prayers, somehow there is little depth and vigor in what we say to God, because we do not say it as though we mean it. It is possible that we can observe all the rules and manifest all of the attitudes Pastor of prayer, and our Clarence hearts are not in it. If a Henderson man wants to be rich, he works at it night and day; he adds, multiplies, divides, and denies himself until he gets what he wants. If a man wants to become a noted scientist, he “burns the midnight oil,” and devotes himself to study and experimentation. So it is in obtaining a closeness with God. We must be earnest in our pursuit, and it is shown by our devoted and dedicated prayer life.

B.L. Horn, Senior Pastor of the Golden Chain Baptist Church. Everybody enjoyed the Award Night program as they always do and look forward to the next program. This program came to a halt when dinner was served in the Fellowship Hall, and we all dined sufficiently on spaghetti, along with a tossed green salad with dressing; a scrumptious tasting roll, some delicious punch that was so very well prepared by the Jordan Blair family and Lorenzia Thomas and Company, along with some diligent and dedicated members of the Calvary Philadelphia Baptist Church. Special thanks are again extended to Pastor Joe H. Moore, Sr. and the Calvary Philadelphia Baptist Church family for hosting this auspicious occasion. Thanks also to Dr. William “Bill” Blair Jr. for having the vision to recognize these outstanding individuals.

Need a Fix? "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will Geraldine not grow weary Davidsonand lose heart." Hooker Hebrews 12:1-3 Ever try to find your way around blindfolded? You can be in the most familiar of places and still do a lot of stumbling and can even get lost. We take for granted all of the thousands of calculations per second our brains do just to keep us standing up right and navigating a simple room. Take away our sight and suddenly there is a great deal of information missing that your brain normally fixes on. I tried an experiment of just closing my eyes and trying to walk slowly in a straight line in one of the meeting rooms of our church. It wasn't long before I had veered slightly and found myself bumping the furniture. However, the longer I did it the better I got at it. I started noticing that I could navigate by sounds. How my footsteps echoed, wind sounds from the windows and various other things started to give my mind the "fixes" it needed to tell me what to do. Our minds need information to steer us, our hearts also need to be fixed on something to keep on the right spiritual path. In the battle with sin for instance, we should have an overwhelming goal in mind as part of our motivation to defeat sin. The perfect goal to keep in mind is Jesus Christ. The writer of Hebrews exhorts us to "keep our eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 12:2). He is to be the object of our spiritual focus. You need a fix! On who or what will it be so that you can run the race of life? You will fix on something, why not choose Jesus?

Whatever He Is Saying To Your Heart Just Do It! Deuteronomy 6:4-7 "Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and Henry Nelson daughters and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up" My purpose this week is to tell you that you can transfer your values to the next generation. You can pass on Biblical values to your children and teenagers and can equip them to live godly lives in the midst of an ungodly world. Amen! Have you ever watched a relay race? A good track coach will tell you that the relay is won or lost in the transfer of the baton. A miscalculation or hesitation at that point can cost the race. Many of us, as Christian parents, grandparents, pastors, and teachers, have begun fearing and feeling that we’re losing the race, that we’re muffing the transfer, that our kids are dropping the baton. The number one fear of Christian parents today is that they will not pass on their values, their morals, and their faith to their children. It is little wonder when you think about it; we look around at a society in which teen pregnancy, drug usage and school dropouts is exploding. So what can we do now to pass on our values to our kids? What can we do to instill biblical concepts of truth and morality within our children and teens? The answer is in the word of God. In my opinion there are three steps that you can model as a model for passing on your faults and values to your children. The first of these is Building a Relationship. Passing your values on to our children requires a healthy relationship. God’s model for teaching Biblical truth to young people called, not only for a constant process, but for a relational method as well. In Deuteronomy 6:4, 7 He said, “You shall teach these things diligently to your sons and daughters and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up." Amen! The Lords words beg the question, of course, “How can we expect to teach these things to our sons and daughters when you do not spend any time with them?” How can you expect to teach these things to your sons and daughters if you are never around, if you are never sitting in your house, never walking with them by the way, if your kids are in bed by the time you get home and still asleep when you leave for the office? A big part of the problem I see all around us in our society is the result of messed up relationships. Biblical truth and godly values are best understood in the context of a relationship. For example, if I need to correct my children, I had to learn to begin by asking a question that appeals to my relationship with them. If the answer to that question is positive, then I can be confident that they will respond to my correc-

tion. I ask, "Do you know that I love you?" By asking that question before I offer correction, I appeal to them, not on the basis of my authority, but on the basis of our relationship. Amen! So, the first step in passing the baton to our children is building a relationship. The second step in the process is: The second is being an Example. Passing our values on to our children entails example. Look at our text in Deuteronomy 6 once again, and you will see that God’s model for passing values on to children requires: And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. Amen! Whether you know it or not, you are being watched. And the things you model - by design or by accident powerfully communicate your convictions about right and wrong, about morality and immorality. If you want to pass on biblical values to our children, you must model those values in your own lives. His words must be on your hearts before you can impress them upon the hearts and minds of your children. If you wish for your sons and daughters to accept the idea that there are absolute standards of right and wrong, you must let them see that we believe it ourselves. I am not saying that we must live perfect lives before our children merely consistent lives: lives that model biblical standards. For example, if I truly want to teach my children to value honesty, I must not "forget" to report every cent of income to the I.R.S. If I want my kids to flee sexual immorality, I ought to be sure my television viewing reflects that value. Finally, the third is to Share the Truth. Passing your values on to your children includes instruction. Instilling biblical values requires a commitment to teach our children consistently, repeatedly, at every opportunity, that there is a standard of right and wrong that transcends human ideas and opinions. He said in Deuteronomy 64:7, "You shall teach these things in diligently to your sons and daughters and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up." Amen! Today passing on your values to your kids often becomes the last thing on your calendar. But that does not mean

www.dfwelitenews.com

we have lost the battle. It simply means you have to seize every opportunity to teach Biblical truths and godly values to your kids. Pull out your wedding albums and using them as a way to share your convictions about sexual purity before and during marriage - and how honoring marriage has resulted in God’s protection and provision in your life. Most importantly, I wanted my children to understand the truth that God is the source of all truth. "He is the Rock.” Moses said in Deuteronomy 2:4, "His work is perfect. A God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he." You see, it is God’s nature and character that defines truth. He defines what is right for all people, for all times, and for all places. I also seek to impress upon my children the concept that truth is not something God decides; it is something He is. I did not want my children to make the mistake of trying to measure right and wrong by their own ideas. I want them to understand that the basis of everything we call moral, the source of every good thing, is the eternal God who is outside us, above us, and beyond us. The reason we think that there are such things as "fair" and "unfair" is because our maker is a just God. The reason love is a virtue and hatred a vice is because the God who formed us is a God of love. The reason honesty is right and deceit is wrong is because God is true. The reason chastity is moral and promiscuity is immoral is because God is pure. Whatever He speaks to your heart today just do it for your children. Amen!

“What the Political World Does Not See” Any man/woman of God who reads their Bible fully understands what is happening in our world today. President brought forth his budget yesterday, and the Republicans from a political view thought the budget was too much, and that it was only going to get us into deeper trouble with the economy. Whatever Obama comes up with is going to be what God has already ordained. Whatever he brings out will take care of the problem at hand. Obama got to the Presidential seat because Gene Turner as in the book of Esther, Out of the Eyes “For such a time as this.” of a Layman God brought Obama into this scene for such a time as this. Two years ago, nobody knew Obama, nobody had ever heard of him down this way; now, all of a sudden he is President. Why? ‘Because God ordained it to be so at this particular time. God set things up so fantastic that most people missed it. First of all, he allowed Bush to become President, and had it not been for Bush, there never would have been an Obama. Someone had to mess things up bad in the United States until the people would cry out for a change, and Obama brought that to the American people. Number two, God put a Democratic Congress together before Obama arrived, that he might have something to work with from day one. Just look at what God is doing. If we are thinking long about now, we should see the parallel between the Black nation of this country and the Israelites. The Israelites were in bondage over 400 years, and were brought out of Egypt by Moses. The Black race was in slavery over 400 years with the mind that Obama has brought to this office. George Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Truman, not even John Kennedy who was also

a Harvard graduate, but this President is very unique, because he is the one God has chosen to lead this nation. Look at this other parallel. My servant Moses is dead; now, therefore, arise. Be strong and of a good courage only be thou strong and very courageous. Is this not Obama? When he is talking, he talks with strength and calmness. Even the commentators recognize his courage and his assuredness when he speaks. God is going to show the world that this man is President, because he was ordained to be President “at such a time as this.” We as a people can make his Presidency a rewarding one providing we hold up his image by elevating our own image in the world. How can we do that, Brother Turner? By the teaching of our children to have a respectful attitude in their daily walk. Wear their clothes in a manner that demands equality, and dignity. I saw a young man the other day in a 711 store who was paying for what he had. His mannerism attracted my attention; he was trying to put his hands in his pocket to pay for whatever he had, and he looked as if he was touching his toes, but he was trying to put his hands in his pocket to get his money, but his pants were so far down from where most people wear them, he almost touched the floor. It’s bad enough when someone else makes you look silly, but when you make yourself look silly, it becomes outrageously insane. We as Black people today have set off a chain reaction with our children, one generation after another in order for us to gain prominence in this world of ours. If you will notice nobody has said anything about the Stimulus package Bush pushed when he took office. He pushed for a rebate check to be sent to all taxpayers. Everybody got $300 $600, but large corporations received millions, and nothing has been mentioned about that. Bill Clinton made the statement before leaving office that Social Security would last until 2010 even if no money was put into it until then. What did Bush do? He broke Social Security the first month. He took it, and that little Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana needs to sit down somewhere, because he looks more like Obama then he does George Washington. All these talk shows reveal to us how White America still thinks about us in general to what they are saying about Obama. Let’s not give them a stick to hit us with; let’s do what it takes to change thoughts of equality among other Ethnic groups. Let us not forget to read our Bibles, and MAY GOD BLESS YOU REAL GOOD, and MAY HE EVER KEEP YOU IN HIS LOVING CARE!

NOTES FROM UNION HOPE A NEW SPIRIT Ezekiel 11:14-21 This lesson teaches us that God loves us even when we have disobeyed him, and cause him to chastise us. We also learned that we are sometimes like the Israel of old. They thought that those that went into captivity in the second wave Eld. Lloyd of those taken into T. Morgan Babylon were the worst among them and they took over their land and houses and mocked them. They said in so many ways “goodie-goodie” your sins finally caught up with you! It’s strange that when we see people that pro-

fess to be Christians going through their trials or afflictions we have the tendency to think or say “they must have committed some horrible sin.” But we don’t want people to think that when we are going through our trials. The Lord said through the prophet Ezekiel that the reality was that those left behind was the worst, and to those that were taken away from the Temple, the God of the Temple promised that He would be with them even in captivity. God promised that when this was over they would be given a NEW SPRIT. Welcome to the weekend baaaaby! The next two weeks are jam packed with artists, guess they gotta eat too, lol… Monday at Dallas House of Blues, it’s Estelle and Solange in concert! Estelle hails from great Great Britain and is still riding high from her two Kevan Grammy nominations, Browning including the hit son American Girl with Kanye West. Solange is of course Beyonce’s younger sister. She’s just coming into her own, enjoying the huge hit “I’ve Decided”! Young Ms. Knowles was performing onstage at the House of Blues in Chicago on Feb. 25 when she decided to channel her inner rock god by grabbing the Kanye West stand and swinging it high into the air. She then attempted to throw it across the stage but it slipped from her grasp and went flying into the crowd, striking a fan. So keep your eyes open, lol! TI’s here Wednesday at Nokia Live for the reported last concert before his Federal lockdown on those pesky gun charges….Cedric The Entertainer’s at Nokia Live Saturday(3/14/09), while The Game blows up the House of Blues at the same time! Michael Jackson is back and will perform a string of concerts at the city's O2 Arena. Celena Aponte, spokeswoman for the venue's operaBobby Womack tor, AEG Live, said Jackson arrived in London on Tuesday! Sky News is reporting that the concerts

will emulate Prince's successful 21-night stay at the venue in 2006 – if interest in the shows is as high as promoters expect. From the “Got reality” category: A woman is suing Paula Abdul and the studios behind her former reality Sean “Diddy” Combs show "Hey Paula" claiming the singer's shoddy property caused her to fall during a taping, reports TMZ.com. Jill Kohl is suing the "American Idol" judge, Bravo Television, NBC Universal, and a host of others -- claiming she took a tumble while walking down a driveway during production! Hey punch me once shame on me, punch me twice, then it’s time to get my relatives!!!! Rihanna and Chris Brown left Miami Beach, Fla. on Sunday and are now back in Los Angeles. After spending the past few days hunkered down at the home of Sean "Diddy" Combs on Star Island, the controversially reunited pair was spotted boarding a private jet together at Miami International Airport late Sunday night. Hopefully these young people can work it out, cause God and ugly don’t roll together! My favorite new “apprentice”? Fans of NBC's S u n d a y "Celebrity Apprentice" can already tell that Tionne "T Boz" Watkins is not one for theatrics or drama. In fact, she's so Paula Abdul low profile that host Donald Trump couldn't even remember the correct way to say her name. After one too many "T-own" pronunciations instead of the correct "T-on," he resorted to calling her "T." TBOZ had a fever and sinus infection…Look for her to rep Hip Hop proud! Addition by Subtracting T.O. Out in Dallas By Jordan R. Blair Irving, Texas – Controversial Wide Receiver for the Dallas Cowboys #81 in your program, Terrell Owens was cut by the Cowboys in a surprising move on Wednesday. His future with the Cowboys has been in question since his arrival. Some have called T.O. a cancer and it was best to cut it out even if it has some value; some say this move was an addition by subtraction and T.O. would not be missed and the team would eventually get better. Others say that it is a pattern with the Cowboys - if you are outspoken, you’ve got to go! Just ask “Hollywood” Henderson and Duane Thomas, former Cowboys players. There has been talk since the end of the Cowboys’ 97 season, in which they missed the playoffs, that they would consider cutting Owens to improve locker room morale. Not only did Owens have relationship issues with quarterback Tony Romo and tight end Jason Witten, but the receiver consistently criticized offensive coordinator Jason Garrett’s play-calling and his offensive schemes to the point that sources have said Garrett did not believe they could coexist. While the Cowboys were trying to downplay a possible

March 6, 2009

www.dfwelitenews.com

rift between Owens and Witten during the season, the two reportedly came close to blows in mid-December. An incident occurred at the Cowboys’ training facility when Witten tried to engage Owens in a conversation about a pass route. Owens told Witten to stay away from him and called him a name. The two exchanged words before being separated. The confrontation came a day after a source told ESPN that Owens believed Romo and Witten – close friends and road roommates – hold private meetings and created plays without including Owens. While Romo will be without the recipient of most of his touchdown passes, he also will no longer need to make sure T.O. has enough passes thrown his way to keep him happy. Whether that was perception or reality, it will no longer matter either. Some said the next move the Cowboys need to make is to tell Jerry Jones to get rid of himself and that would surely fix the Cowboys for good. The Cowboys signed Owens to a $34 million extension last June that included a $12.9 million signing bonus, but they have decided to move on. Sorry to say – but the Cowboys have started the year off on a losing streak. Getting rid of T.O. – their loss – and first injury – they may have just shot themselves in the foot!

This one night was power-packed with original featured selections by the classic gospel icon, LaShun Pace; the amazing Evangelist Rubenstein McClure; Evangelist Deborah Sutton; and Mrs.Tamela Mann (Cora of Meet the Browns). GREGG A. SMITH’S “BACKYARD SPOTLIGHT” By Roman Ross Gwen Stiger aka Legacy was born Feb 9, 1960, in the small country town of Maud, Texas to Earlie Faye and John Wilson. The oldest of 8 Children, she attended Maud Elementary and Junior High and was one of the first black female students in 1966 to integrate and attend Maud Elementary School, First Grade. In Junior High, she played Basketball, Volleyball and Baseball and was very competitive. Her ability in class helped her to take enriched classes with high scores in Algebra and Chemistry. She knows what hard work is having worked from 9 yrs old through 14 yrs every summer. She washed dishes at the local cafe and picked peas and corn at 0.50 - $1.00 a bushel. Her mother and father divorced when she was 8 yrs old in 1968, and the youngest baby was 6 months old. Her mother worked as a cook in the local cafe, and she had the responsibility of watching over her siblings while her mother worked (her father was non-supportive). Her mother worked the 2 - 10 shift and would cook before going to work. However sporadically she would leave a note on the kitchen table telling her to walk the 2 miles to the cafe where she worked, so she could load up sacks of hamburgers and hot dogs to feed her brothers and sisters. She had to help them with home work and had to make sure the house was still clean when her mother made it home. She learned responsibility at a very young age, however, her mother's sister (Auntie P) stayed next door and if she needed anything or if something looked wrong she could knock on the door that separated the two apartments for help. She was raised up in the church and sang in the choir as one of the lead singers. Her mother made them go every Sunday, so she found Jesus at a very young age and would often find herself talking to him and seeking him more and more. She was told at the age of 9 by her pastor that she was a

prophet (of course she did not know what that was, but she does now). Her mother moved to Texarkana, Texas, when she was 14 and she attended Westlawn Junior High where she continued to play sports and take enriched classes. It was there that she met her lifetime friend, Lollie Harris. They have maintained a friendship and sisterhood for the last 33 years. In the summer of 1976, while playing softball I met her husband, Dave Stiger, who was coaching another team. They fell in love and became a couple. She gave birth to her first born son, Davian in 1977 and my husband and I moved to Houston, Texas. However they moved back home to Texarkana, Texas, the next year after being trapped in a winter storm while visiting home during the Christmas holidays. It was then she conceived her 2nd son, Tyanthany. Her husband worked while she

Mrs. Catherine Hillman, one of the most wonderful people that have ever been in my life passed on to glory on Feb.28th. A memorial service will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church, 3700 Carl St., Pastor Sammy Davis, in South Dallas. She goes to meet her mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and husband so I know she won't be alone! It's seldom that you get the chance to make a friend out of a family member. Most of the time it’s just a family member you see every now and then, somebody who you may see at a reunion or in a store. This lady took me to her heart and we were more like brother and sister then cousins. I guess it's true when they say the good die young! This lady touched so many

lives; she helped raise so many other people’s children who now have children. She was steadfast in her beliefs and aggressive in her standards. She was an advocate of the virtues of Cannabis Sativa as a means to maintain a "peaceful' outlook on life and practiced those virtues every day. Such a beautiful mind comes along once in a lifetime and I will sorely miss her. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter Octavia, brother Gregg and a host of families and friends. Goodbye baby girl, I will see you after while. Weita Mae Edwards Sweat Sw e a t , We i t a Mae Edwards 86.
