The Qualities of Easter Luke 24:33-44 “They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon." Then the two told what had happened on the Henry Nelson way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence. He said to them, "This is what I told you
while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." Today people will only commit to things they feel are relevant. They say, “OK, Easter happened. So what? How will that make a difference in my life tomorrow?” In Luke 24 the risen Jesus appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They did not recognize their Lord perhaps they were too overwhelmed by grief. They invite Him to have dinner with them. As He breaks bread with them and offers thanks, they see that it is Jesus, their Messiah. From this event we can see that Easter brings 4 relevant qualities to make our lives different: peace, joy, hope, and mission. Peace, is the first Easter quality I will talk about. Jesus knew His followers were confused and frightened. They had hit rock bottom. And so He says, “Peace be with you.” This is not simply a salutation; it’s the first application of Easter which is peace. Everyone wants peace of mind. We live in such a troubled world. Even the Holy Land is polluted with violence and unrest. People attempt to attain peace by their own efforts. Optimistic songs have been written about being able to dream the impossible dream, climb every mountain, and fly with bluebirds over the rainbow, all this sounds very idealistic, and not very realistic, without a Higher Power. Before you can get peace of mind, you need to find peace with God. Unbelievers are at war with
God, even if they do not realize it. They are choosing to live apart from God, to live as though God does not exist. The Hebrew word for peace, shalom, means fullness, wholeness. Peace comes by realizing that you are forgiven, that you have already passed our judgment test with God. Peace means that the grave is not the end of life. By applying Easter’s peace today, we can face tomorrow with calmness, serenity, assurance and confidence. You know that whatever the Prince of peace brings into your lives will work out for your good. On 5th Avenue in New York City there is a visual reminder of the Source of true peace. At the entrance of the RCA Building is a huge statue of Atlas struggling to keep the world on his shoulders. On the other side of the street is Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Behind the altar is a small statue of Jesus effortlessly holding the whole world in one hand. Peace is hard to come by when we strive to balance the world on our own backs, but when we heed God’s invitation to give Him our burdens, the weight of our world becomes effortless for our risen Lord. Joy is the next Easter quality. “They still did not believe because of joy and amazement.” Elsewhere in the John 15:11, Jesus states, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

Resurrection: Yes, Jesus Loves You! By Lola Searcy They say HE paid a debt that HE did not owe. They say that HE would not come down from the cross just to save himself. They say HE decided to die just to save us. They say that the debt had to be paid with a life that knew no sin; so he gave HIS LIFE. They say HE told his Father if he needed someone to die in order to redeem man; HE said, “HERE AM I, SEND ME”. They say that HElived in a kingdom where his FATHER owned EVERYTHING and he stood to inherit all of it; yet HE gave it all up for you and me! So, when the question is asked, “WHY DID HE DO IT”? The answer is: HE LOVED us soo much that he gave HIS LIFE for us! So, since we don’t have enough money to pay him (all the silver and gold; the cattle on a thousand hills belong to him) and if we had ten thousand tongues, it wouldn’t be enough to praise him or to thank him! So, just what can we do to show our appreciation to JESUS CHRIST our LORD for giving HIS LIFE for us? Well, let’s start with spending more time with him. If you don’t regularly attend Sunday school, this
Sunday, April 4th would be a great time to start. If you don’t read your Bible, start reading it! And if you read it, but you don’t read it every day, start! How often do you pray? They say, when you pray, you talk to God; but when you read God’s word; he talks to you. Have you had a talk with JESUS lately? Haven’t been to “Kneebone station” lately? Go! You can go there every day as often as you like free of charge! Make JESUS the LOVE of your LIFE, because that’s what you are to him! HE LOVED US SO MUCH THAT HE DIED FOR US; HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR US! 13 Greater LOVE hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13. How about attending Bible Study on Wednesday night, or whenever your Bible study night is! And if you’re not a member of a local Church, join and begin a relationship with the LOVE OF YOUR LIFE! I can tell you that there is NOBODY like JESUS! And no one; man or woman, boy or girl will ever LOVE you like JESUS LOVES YOU! Remember: NO ONE FORCED HIM TO DIE FOR US; HE VOLUNTEERED; NO ONE TOOK HIS LIFE; HE GAVE HIS
LIFE! HE DID SO BECAUSE HE LOVES US! THERE IS NOBODY LIKE JESUS!! A friend of mine once told me, “You always find or have time for the people and the things you LOVE”!! JESUS took time out of HIS LIFE to die for us, so this resurrection season, let’s take time out of our lives for JESUS!! I borrowed a few lines from one of our readers, Trina Triche who wrote a poem, entitled, WITNESS in honor of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. You don’t know my name; my face you can’t see, but there is something inside compelling me to be a person of integrity, full of compassion and love—to shine a light and glorify God up above.

Prayer Closet PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON
Church Woman Of The Week
ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST
You have heard the old saying “It’s not who you are but, who’s you are!” Well with this thought in mind, we should be more confidenced and comforted as we enter into our prayer closet. God is not only Pastor the creator of man, Clarence but He is personally Henderson interested in man’s welfare. Man is the crowning glory of God’s creation and is kin to God by His spirit. We were made in the image of God and were meant to glorify Him forever. It is quite evident from the divine record that God made man because He desired conversation, fellowship and appreciation. What a great opportunity it is, for us to fulfill the desire of our creator, and that happens when we go into a secret place of prayer.

Paid In Full In the GOSPEL, we are encouraged to live as though we know Jesus Christ is risen from the dead. Please don’t skim past this encouragement because you think all Christians know this simple fact. The challenge is not in knowing the correct answer, but in living consistent with true knowledge in terms of thankfulness and perseverance - a life of hope and power. The following courtroom drama helps us Geraldine the Davidson-Hooker understand implications of a risen Lord. The prosecution is aggressively presenting the case against us. There's a parade of witnesses and a multitude of accusations flung our way. Our head hangs low - we sadly realize that no objection can be raised - every charge against us is true. Our heart sinks as the prosecution confidently concludes his case; he has demanded the maximum penalty - death! Our defense attorney has sat silently through the entire proceeding, but now He rises. His white robe glides across the floor as He moves between us and the Judge. Stretching out His arms, He reveals deep scars on both His wrists. He looks into the eyes of the Judge and says: "Father, while they were in the midst of their crimes, I died so they may live." Without a moment of hesitation, the gavel sounds and the Judge declares: "Not Guilty!" The verdict in God's courtroom is not dependent on the balance of good versus bad. There is no amount of good deeds and moral living which will ever cancel the charge against us; "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). And there is only one sentence we truly deserve; "For the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). But God has provided an Advocate, whom He has already approved by His resurrection, and who now stands ready to walk by our side; "We have one who speaks to the Father in our defense - Jesus Christ, the Righteous One" (1 John 2:1). This Advocate has only one requirement in order to present our case. Romans 10:9 "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Easter, Continued from Page 2 The disciples were surprised by joy; they felt the resurrection was nearly too good to be true; overcome with grief, they are now overwhelmed with joy. It is like being told you have won a million dollars; at first you cannot believe your good fortune. Jesus gave His disciples time to let the reality of His resurrection sink in. He asked for something to eat, and they realized that He was truly alive. Joy is a companion to peace, a natural bi-product. We wrongly equate joy with escaping the cares of the world. Joy helps us overcome our concerns. Joy is not the absence of sorrow. God gives joy in the midst of sorrow. The fact that Jesus could have joy in the midst of sorrow shows that you can experience it too. Joy substitutes are mere temporary distractions. The world’s joy is fleeting and artificial, and when it is gone we are left with greater emptiness. Christian joy is not substitution but transformation. It is something we become. We are prone to want God to change our circumstances, when He wants instead to change our character. Joy that comes from God enriches your lives and enables us to feel secure even when our circumstances are shaky. Joy is spiritual prosperity. Joy is different from happiness. Happiness turns up more or less where you would expect it to; a good marriage, a rewarding job, a pleasant vacation. Joy, on the other hand, is as unpredictable as the One who gives is. Malcolm Muggeridge was a Marxist before he found Christ. During the Cold War he traveled to Russia to write a story about the Communist party and the decline of religion in that atheistic regime. After conducting a series of interviews with officials in the Kremlin, he attended a Russian Orthodox Easter service. The church was packed. At the close of the service the priest announced, “Christ is risen”, and the people shouted back, “He is risen indeed!” Muggeridge looked into their faces and instantly realized that they were right and that Stalin was wrong. He said it was the reality of their joy that tipped the scales of his soul toward Christ. The reality of Christian joy is compelling! Easter is about victory over death. We have joy in knowing that Jesus holds the keys of death and hell. He has unlocked heaven’s doors and locked the gates of hell. People fear, obsess over, and deny death, but for Christians, death is a non-issue, because we possess the joy of Easter. A third Easter quality is Hope. When you know people are going to keep their promises, you have a secure hope that does not disappoint. Jesus explains to His followers how all the details of His life were in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Jesus is the embodiment of God’s promises to us. At a famous Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, the staff unanimously singles out hope as the most important factor in the treatment of mental illness. Hope is necessary for survival. With hope, we can get up and face another day. Hope causes us to rejoice. According to an ancient Russian Orthodox tradition, the day before Easter was devoted to telling jokes. Priests would join the people in telling their best jokes to one another. The reason was to reflect the joke God pulled on the devil in the Resurrection. Satan thought he won on Friday, but God had the last laugh on Easter Sunday. Our hope causes us to laugh about the victory we have through Christ. Easter brings internal qualities of peace, joy, and hope which result in external action. God has plans for us, which is a mission. You participate in the work of Christ by heralding the Good News. Many organizations have a mission statement. Colossians 1:28 says, “We proclaim Christ, counseling and instructing all people with all wisdom, so that you can present everyone complete in Christ. Amen! You all have unique gifts, and God expects you to find your niche in His Kingdom. Every ability has a Kingdom application. Plus you have a mission to be witnesses by what you say and do. Is God telling you to serve Him? To help someone? To say yes to something, or to give something up? To take on a special project for His glory? You can walk away from Easter with renewed peace, joy, hope and a firm sense of mission, which can affect your entire outlook on life. You become purpose-driven to win our world for Christ. Your whole image; how you appear and talk, and your outlook and reaction to life will all be different and when people ask what happened to us, you can answer: “Easter happened that is what!”

Roberts Brothers Bring First AfricanAmerican Owned Hotel to Dallas By Lola Searcy You heard, right? No majority ownership! No partnership! Sole ownership! The FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN owned hotel celebrated its grand opening on Tuesday, March 30th at the Courtyard Marriot located at 2383 Stemmons Trail. Brothers Michael Victor Roberts, Sr. and Steven Craig Roberts are thrilled to bring their full-service hotel to Dallas. The Roberts brothers are no strangers to the hotel business, owning 11 other hotels, with locations in Atlanta and premier vacation spot set to open later this year in the Bahamas! Michael and Steven Roberts are natives of St. Louis, Missouri and educated in the St. Louis public school system. Both began working early on, earning money doing chores and delivering newspapers in their St. Louis neighborhood. Michael attended Central Missouri State University and Forest Park Community College. He met Mr. Jack Danforth at Camp Minneanka and finished Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri as a Danforth Fellow. He began his first business selling dashikis and other African American merchandise to area bookstores. Michael studied law at St. Louis University School of Law, and in 1974, he earned his J.D. degree and began Roberts-Roberts and
Associates, a business and construction management firm headquartered in St. Louis. Roberts worked as the St. Louis campaign manager for Jimmy Carter in 1976 and upon President Carter’s election to the Presidency; Michael was a regular guest at the White House. One year later, he was elected the youngest Alderman in St. Louis. Two years later his brother Steven claimed the title. Steven Roberts is the younger brother to Michael. Steven attended Clark University in Massachusetts, and like his brother Michael, was a Danforth Fellow with initial aspirations of a career in Ministry and Medicine. Roberts graduated with dual J.D. and M.A. degrees in 1978. In 1979, he was elected as the youngest person to become an Alderman in the City of St. Louis; just like his brother before him. In 1981, the Roberts brothers began Roberts Broadcasting, a new branch of the duos business empire. After establishing WRBU-TV in St. Louis, the Roberts brothers would go on to build eleven more successful television stations across the country, from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Mobile, Alabama. The Roberts brothers founded Roberts Brothers Construction Company in 1989. This additional holding supplemented

GREGG A. SMITH’S “BACKYARD SPOTLIGHT Local Pastor Offers Public Support for New Healthcare Legislation By Lola Searcy On Friday, March 26, Dallas area residents and local leaders called a press conference to show their support of recent health care legislation passed by Congress and signed into by President Barack Obama. The group, led by Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, Senior Pastor of the Friendship West Baptist Church feels opponents of the law have garnered an undue amount of news coverage while supports of President Obama’s healthcare legislation have gone unheard. The press conference was held at 2:00 pm outside the emergency room of Parkland Memorial Hospital, located at 5201 Harry Hines Blvd., here in the city of Dallas. “Other voices need to be heard concerning the new healthcare legislation. It is senseless for Texas to take part in a lawsuit opposing the new law when one out of every four persons in the state of Texas is uninsured and one out of three in Dallas County lack coverage, says Dr. Haynes, Senior Pastor of the Friendship – West Baptist Church. The group will also oppose the lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and speak out against threats made against members of Congress who
voted in favor of the new healthcare legislation. Below is a copy of the letter to attorney General Greg Abbott drafted by Pastor Haynes in opposition to the Attorney General’s decision to join other states in pursuing a lawsuit against the federal in regards H.R. 3550 – Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Dear Honorable Greg Abbott: I am a citizen of Dallas, Texas and/or a citizen in the state of Texas. I am writing to express my disappointment in your decision to join other state attorney generals and file a lawsuit with the federal government. I do not support your stated position that “no public policy goal—no matter how important or well-intended—can be allowed to trample the protections and rights guaranteed by our Constitution. To protect all Texans’ constitutional rights, preserve the constitutional framework intended by our nation’s founders, and defend our state from further infringement by federal government, the State of Texas and other states have filed a legal challenge seeking judgment from the courts that the federal health care take over is unconstitutional. YOU DO NOT REPRESENT MY VOICE.

Barber Shop Sports Talk with Leon Simon They had the Carter shootout this weekend, in past years the Carter shootout was a prelude to the Texas relays. A feeling out process or the half way tune up for the state championship. Things have changed no longer does DISD have all the shack bullies. Gone are the years of domination of the Ernest James Mustangs of Roosevelt, The Boston Grant Golden Bears of South Oak Cliff, The Fred Allen led Lincoln Tigers or even The Leonard Grant Trojans of James Madison. And later SOC, even later the man for which the shootout was named The Eddie Payne Carter Cowboys. Robert Taylor even contributed to Dallas track tradition with his Kimball Knights Championship. Those Championship teams were manned by young men like Gene and Joe Pouncy, Rufus “Hollywood Shaw. They were the forerunners for Lincoln then the Tommy “Tuna Fish Mccalls, Gerald Smith, Michael Wright, Gerald Alexander, etc. Lincoln Tigers. The Mustangs of “Velt Alvin Crenshaw, James Green, Gregory Clark, John (Washington) Jefferson .and who will ever forget the era of Roy (Robot) Martin. “ Quick Draw McGraw, Dobie Jefferson, Michael and Marlin Canon, Rod Jones etc, I’m missing a ton of names due to time and space. Names like Tim Brown, Michael Johnson. Those prestigious days are over, there a few Schools in the DISD that still keep up the tradition. Skyline Girls, Madison boys. Although DISD is not as strong as past years the Dallas area is still an area that has to be dealt with at the Texas Relays or any where else they run track. The Schools may have changed to the Suburbs, but the above athletes are probably fathers or grand
fathers of today’s stars or went to school with their parents. M a n s f i e d Timberview girls the defending state 4a champion are even stronger this year and if they come to the Texas relays, Along with Skyline girls, Lancaster, should be competition Leon Simon enough to make North Texans proud. Killeen Ellison 4 by 100, 40.6 should be the class of the field. Desoto and Lancaster boys should be in the thick of all the other relays. Kingswood Spring Westfield, and Glena park North Shore all Houston are Schools should be considered as challengers as well. Kingwood posted a States top 3’14. In the mile relay. Tiffany Hines won the 100 meters against the area’s top three sprinters although Hines is the states defending 5a champion, the margin of victory was not great enough to make her shoe in. Lancaster and Desoto should be very strong in the hurdles 300m and 110m. Directly After the Texas relays comes the District meets and that’s the time when all of those aerobics classes will be eliminated and the meets can stay on schedule. If you plan to attend the Texas Relays or State meet you won’t have to sit through the weight losing classes. The weather seems to be perfect so before it gets to hot get the family an get out of the house and enjoy some track.

Local congregation celebrates 64th Church Anniversary By: Bettye Williams “Katt” A beautiful day to enjoy the services with the New Mount Zion Baptist Church, located at 9550 Sheppard Road, Dr. R.E. Price (Pastor), celebrated its 64th church anniversary on Sunday, March 28th. The celebratory gala started the day out with an early Morning Worship Service with joyful voices of the Mount Zion Praise Team and ended with an inspiring message given by Minister Thomas Smith. Mid-morning services continued with selections that up lifted the congregation with soulful sounds of tenors, baritone, and bass echoed across the congregation, by none other than the Marvelous Men’s Male Chorus. A special tribute by the “Mighty Soldiers of Christ” Drill team, in honor of the 64 years of service held at the New Mount Zion Baptist Church. The last service to celebrate the church’s 64th Anniversary, contributed to a theme: “A Blessed Church, Standing Firm on God’s Principles,” and the Theme’s Scripture came from “2 Chronicles 7:14’. Many members, family, and guest churches such as; St. John Baptist Church, Dr. Denny Davis (Pastor), Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Stephen Jones (Pastor), and Marsalis Avenue Baptist Church, Terry White (Pastor); assembled in the

With the contributions of time, resources, the spiritual contributions that enrich lives of all their members, The New Mount Zion will continue to set their “affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Congratulations go out to Dr. R. Welcome to the weekend, baaaaby! Well, I tried to get tickets to cover Alicia Keys at Nokia live, but was not deemed important enough by the management at Nokia in Grand Prairie to make the media cut… Ahhhh, Kevan That’s showbiz! Ms. Browning Keys sets it off tonight at 8P…. Being shunned, by Nokia management (calls/emails not returned) allows me to save up energy for the Dallas Mavericks vs. former UT star Kevan Durant and his Oklahoma City Thunder, Saturday Night at The AA Center! Fox News has been called out by NCIS star and Hip Hop Legend LL Cool J for grabbing a 2008 interview he gave to someone else at the network and sticking it into Sarah Palin’s upcoming series “Real American Stories”! She’s tha realest!! Her son turned himself in to police Tuesday night in connection with his marijuana possession charge from March 7. Officials at the Gwinnett County Detention Center say Bryson Sean “Diddy” Combs Bryant was released about 3AM Tuesday according to my partner Bloodhound Benny! Sean “Diddy” Combs made an illegal u-turn in the middle of Sunset Blvd and was cited by the LAPD around 1:30 a.m. for the traffic violation. Diddy was said to be “cooperative” as he was busted in his 2009 Cadillac Escalade. He was ticketed and sent on his way. Have you had enough “Tiger Woods”? Then you should turn the page now!!!!!! CITY BEAT NOTES FROM UNION HOPE “ACCEPTANCE IN COMMUNITY” “ACCEPTANCE IN COMMUNITY” RUTH 2:5-12; 3:9-11 was our lesson for Church school. We learn how Ruth who was of another race, another culture, and had a different god gained acceptance within the Jewish community and became an ancestor of Eld. Lloyd Jesus. She did not seek T. Morgan to change the people nor force herself upon them she blended-in and followed the directions of her mother-in-law. Have you ever been in a setting and looked around and you were the only one that looked like you? This can be a strange feeling, but if someone approach you and introduce themselves to you, offer their hand as a gesture of friendship, take you and introduce you to others and they are friendly and accepting, your uneasiness subside. Ruth followed the customs of the com-
munity and caught the eye of one of the wealthiest men in the city who was a near kinsman. What he found attractive first was her work ethics, and he noticed that she was not flirtatious with the men in the field; our character says more about us than our physical appearance. The Morning message was delivered by pastor Eld.L.T.Morgan from the subject “Finding good in the worst situation” Phil.1:12-25. In this age of “name it and claim it” “your blessing is on the way” there need to be word spoken to those that are not “next in line” those that find themselves jobless, those with a lingering sickness, that issue of life that doesn’t go away when you pray. Paul found that even in a bad situation God can use you to be a blessing to those that see him in you giving you joy in your suffering. His strength is made perfect in our weakness. All things “still” work together for the good of them that love the Lord. Be blessed
City Councilman Tennell Atkins Hosts District 8 Community Informational Meeting By Lola Searcy Dallas City Councilman Tennell Atkins hosted a community informational meeting on Monday, March 29th at the Friendship – West Baptist Church. The meeting was to inform local
District 8 residents about the upcoming petition to sell alcohol and liquor in District 8. Councilman Atkins wants the residents of District 8 to know exactly what it is they are signing. This is the first City –wide Local option Election in the City of Dallas. The local option election allows voters to decide if the sale of alco-
holic beverages will be prohibited or allowed in an area. This election determines if an area is “wet” or “dry”. There are two petitions being circulated. One petition is for the legal sale of beer and wine and one is for the sale of mixed drinks in restaurants. All persons who sign the petition must be registered voters! The TPS (Texas Petition Strategies) must obtain the signatures of approximately 68,500 qualified registered voters on each petition. The TPS has 60 days to obtain the signatures and the petitions must be filed with the City Secretary on or by May 24, 2010. Once the TPS has finished its process, the City Secretary will issue the approved petition forms, notify the secretary of State and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC). The secretary of state will monitor petition return date, verify signatures on petition within 30 days of receipt and then provide verification of results to the Dallas City Council. Councilman Atkins says that this meeting is not intended to tell the voters of Dallas how to vote, but rather to educate them as it pertains to the current proposal.
