psalms 119:9-11 “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Henry Nelson

Have you ever noticed that people have a disconnect with the truth? It is something that we are seeing more and more of in our culture today. As drama humorously proposed to us today, especially at the end, standards of truth are not evenly applied. In fact, as truth loses its absolute status, we find that people can say whatever they want, when they want, to get what they want, and still rationalize that they are being rational. The aquarium shop where my friend worked had been in business for more than 20 years. One Sunday a customer called wanting to buy a larger aquarium. "And by the way, I’ve spent a lot of money at your store over the years," he said. "I think I should get a discount." "Only our owner can give a discount,"

Not Your Way, But god’s Way

he explained, "and he won’t be in until tomorrow." When the customer said that he would come in the next day, he was asked him if there was anything else he could help him with. "Sure," he said. "Where is your store located?" Now there was an obvious disconnect, right? Yet, it wasn’t to the person calling. How does that happen? Well, we are finding more and more that truth is too often a casualty. You need to recognize in us individually, the heart is deceitfully wicked. That is the testimony of Scripture. Now, that may be hard for us to hear, but it is a reality that we must come to grips with. Just as we often hear what we want to hear, we also tend to believe what we want to believe. But along with this, I have to believe that if Christ were bodily present with us today, we would hang on His every word. Don’t you think so? If He were to step up to this spot here, you would eagerly listen to everything He had to say. We would be delighted that He cared so much about us that He came to tell us the things we needed to know in person. That would be marvelous, wouldn’t it? But you know if you are willing, you can hear what God wants us to hear. Amen! When you use your imagination about what it would be like if Jesus were standing

Honoring Ms. Norma Adams Wade

On Sunday, June 6th at 3:30 pm the Mt. Horeb Missionary Baptist Church, will sponsor a PreChildren’s Day observance during which we will establish the Norma Adams Wade Literary and Dramatic Guild. This event will be held in honor of Ms. Wade’s outstanding service to young people here and in the community. During this Norma Adams Wade event, our children will perform with songs of praise, essay readings, and poetry orations. In doing so, we will honor Ms. Wade, who grew up at Mt. Horeb, and after completing her college education, returned to her home church and city. She has served for more than 30 years as a columnist and writer for The Dallas Morning News, bringing a positive spotlight on our African American Culture and life.

here, this is not so much a dream, as reality. Jesus is here! He’s here literally. He’s in this sanctuary right now. Though you cannot see Him with your physical eyes, your eyes of faith are seeing His true presence more clearly, and with those eyes of faith, you are realizing that Jesus is speaking. He is speaking to us through His Word, which He has blessed us with. He did this because He wanted us to know what He has to say about life. Yet, how many of us have a casual attitude toward this book. Our attempts to hear what it says are done in a hitand-miss fashion. But, if you consistently approach it as Jesus’ words to us, something happens to us. The Word produces positive results in our lives. 1st Thessalonians 2:13 says, And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe. Amen! I want to key into this last phrase that if you believe, the word of God is at work in you. The word is full of energy. It is effective, it is efficient and it is productive. When you welcome God’s Word into your lives with obedient faith, God’s power goes to work. Amen! So, if you are reading this message with a prepared heart, God is ready to go at work in

you, because with a prepared heart, you are searching and listening attentively for His Word to you. And you have been willing to pray, “God, I want to hear what you have to say to me. You know, that is a dangerous prayer, because more often than not, it will probably mean change. For that is what God’s Word does. It constantly challenges us to know Him better and become like Him. You are to surrender to the truth of god’s word and be changed, but how do we do that? Well I will give you several ways to accomplish your surrender so that you can be changed by the Word of God. The first way you can accomplish your surrender is to listen. Do you ever wonder if your kids are listening? Isn’t it amazing how you can say to do something now and somehow, in the translation, it becomes optional and just nothing more than a good idea? How does that happen? But how often do we do the very same thing to the Lord?! We need to possess an attitude of receptivity. We need to be open and eager to receive the Word with a willingness to hear. The second way you can accomplish your surrender is to meditate. Psalm 119:97 says, “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. You need to spend time understand-

June: Black Music Month. Did You Know? By Lola Searcy Did you know that June is Black Music Month? Well, the truth is, not very many knew it, perhaps they just didn’t realize it, or they don’t care. That is why we’ve taken this opportunity to share some history with our readers concerning Black Music Month. Black Music Month was born out of a vision of one of America’s legendary songwriters, Mr. Kenny Gamble of the famous songwriting team of “GAMBLE & HUFF”. Now, you may or may not know their faces and many of our readers under the age of 30 have probably never heard their songs. They have collaborated with several recording artists to write some of the most popular tunes known to the music world. They wrote such chart topping hits like: “Back Stabbers”, by the O’Jays; “Cowboys to Girls” by The Intruders; “Expressway to your Heart”, by the Soul Survivors; “For the Love of Money” by the O’Jays; “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”, by The Supremes; “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”, by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes; “Me and Mrs. Jones”, by Billy Paul; “Now that We’ve Found Love” and “When Will I See You Again”, by The

Three Degrees; just to name a few. Ms. Dyana Williams and the International Association of African American Music Foundation (IAAAM) took the vision and brought it to life. After many meetings, disappointments, articles, radio and TV talk shows, she finally convinced the President, the Senate, and the House to officially proclaim “June” as Black Music Month (AfricanAmerican Music Month). The bill is known as House Concurrent Resolution 27. Realizing the major impact Black/African American music played in America and the global economy, the idea of Black Music Month was first introduced in 1979 by former President Jimmy Carter who officially cited “June” as Black Music Month. President Carter hosted the very first Black Music Month celebration on the South Lawn of the White House. Since then, it has taken rather slow progress to what it has become today. Twenty years later, on Tuesday, October 13, 1998, Congressman Chaka Fattah, Dyana Williams and Don Cornelius, of the highly popular Soul Train television show, successfully spearheaded the passing of The African-American Music Bill (House Concurrent Resolution 27).

This bill officially proclaims “June” as AfricanAmerican Music Month, honoring and acknowledging the many contributions made by AfricanAmericans through music. The proclamation reads as follows: Recognizing the importance of AfricanAmerican music to global culture and calling on the people of the United States to study on, reflect on, and celebrate African-American music. WHEREAS artists, songwriters, producers, engineers, educators, executives, and other professionals in the music industry provide inspiration and leadership through their creation of music, dissemination of educational information, and financial contributions to charitable and community-based organizations; WHEREAS African-American music indigenous to the United States and originates from African genres of music; WHEREAS African-American genres of music such as gospel, blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, rap, and hip-hop have their roots in the AfricanAmerican experience;

“Christian Stewardship”

John 9:4 First of all; what is s t e w a r d s h i p ? Stewardship means that one has been put over the operation of another persons holding, or possessions. Not only to be in charge, but to build or produce more than was to him. Gene Turner turnedInover John 9:4 Jesus Out of the Eyes of tells of his own personal a Layman purpose and what He must do, but more than that He gives us direction of what we should be about who will be with Him in the Kingdom. This is a declaration, which identifies work of the Christian and its purpose. We are all called by God to do a certain work within Kingdom building, but we must recognize that calling and respond to it by working the works of Him who sends us out. The next part of this statement: “ While it is day,” suggests to us that there are restrictions as to the time we have to do this work. When we look at the word “Day”: speaking in the context it means opportunity. You see, we only have the opportunity to do a lot of things during daylight hours, seeing without obstructions. Daylight hours only last for a certain time

during a 24-hour period, so, it is important that we work diligently while the sun is up in order that we might be able to see what we are doing. You see when things are going well with us, we must not forget that things will not always be well, there will be some dark hours, so, we should do all we can while we are able to do them. You know, we are always tempted to forget what comes after a sunny “Day”. We forget that the sun will not always be high in the sky and always shining. Once the day is gone it cannot be recalled again, so, we must work as much as we can that Day. Our lives will not go on forever, so we must work His will while we have the opportunity to work His works. Too many good deeds go undone, many kind words go unsaid, too many great potentials go untested, and simply because of opportunities we failed to capitalize on. Many of us misuse our sunlight. We simply waste sunlight being idle. Today will never be again, it cannot be recalled, so we must work while it is “Day”: Jesus makes this statement so as to bring about a sense of urgency to our minds, it was meant to be a challenge to us that we might understand the importance of doing the best we can while we can. Our potential to serve depends upon the willingness to take advantage of opportunities.

New Beginnings in North Dallas

1st Lady Carlisa Worsham, Kennedi Worsham and Rev. Craig Worsham

By Brenda Blair Sr. Pastor Rev. Craig Worsham and the members of Trinity Church of North

June 4, 2010

Dallas have started a new vision for the North Dallas area. Their mission is to help and serve those in need and seek those who are lost, seeking the salvation of God. Trinity bases this on Matthew 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.” Sr. Pastor Craig Worsham invited Rev. Dr. Michael E. Bell, Sr. to hold a revival on May 27-28, as a means of support for their vision. Rev. Dr. Michael E. Bell is the Sr. Pastor of Allen Chapel AME Church in Washington, D.C. Dr. Bell came and delivered powerful messages both nights. The revival was held at Christian Chapel C.M.E., where Rev. Jerome McNeil is the Sr. Pastor. Rev. Craig Worsham and Trinity

We as Laymen in the church should work to save our young men while we have the opportunity to do so. You know what most of us think? We think working in the church is the work we should be doing. Yes, we should work in the church, but let us not get it mixed up with the work of the church. You hear people say things like, “ sing for the Lord child”, She/he should not be singing for the Lord, the Lord does not need your singing, and He needs your willingness to work his works. Whatever we do in the church or on the church grounds should be for praise only. When we give praise to God on Sunday morning, because that’s the only time some of us go anyway – that’s what we should do to let God know that we appreciate what He has already done for us as an individual. That’s not working for God that’s praising God. When you help someone who cannot help him or herself or when you lead others to Christ, then we are working while it is “Day”. When night cometh no man can work. Night means Days end. It’s going to come no matter what happens. Our day will end some dark night, so, let’s work while it is “Day”! Let us not forget to read our Bibles. May God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Even though tragedy has become a common place in our society, and we seem to be overcomed by many calamities. Yet, there is that seemingly small, manute, and insignificant, but yet the greatest, and most important part of our life that we seem to neglect. That is Pastor our prayer life. We are Clarence encouraged by Apostle Henderson Paul in Ephesians 6:18 "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching there unto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints". Therefore in the midst of tragedies and calamities, let's remember that prayer is that tiny nerve that moves the hand of God.

Give From the Heart TXU energy Offers Cool Ways to “Beat the Heat” This Summer

In the book of Malachi, God called the people of Israel back to the law He established 800 years earlier with Moses. God spoke of the necessity of a pure sacrifice (Malachi 1:7-8), and the need for the priests to speak a message of truth (Malachi 2:7-8). He also addressed the issue of giving back a portion of our resources - a portion referred to as the tithe. The principle of an offering began with Cain and Able. Abraham then demonstrated the concept of Geraldine the tithe when he Davidson-Hooker gave Melchizedek "a tenth of everything." But systematic tithing was not established until God gave the law to Moses In the time of Malachi, God not only called for a return to the discipline of tithing, He also directly linked tithing to blessings and gave the ultimate challenge: "Test Me in this and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of Heaven" (Malachi 3:10). God certainly never "owes" us because of anything we do; but His Word contains a consistent call to obedience, and true obedience always results in true blessing. When Jesus died on the cross, He fulfilled the law for all who believe. And though the legalistic letter of the law has passed away, the intent of the law (which is the heart of God) remains for all time; "These {laws} are a shadow of the things to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ" (Colossians 2:17). The intent, or "reality," of all the law is that God is Lord over ALL areas of our life. The law teaches this truth and shows us how far short we fall of His standard. The purpose of the law was much more than teaching us to comply with a written code. The shadow contained in the written law says "Thou shalt not kill," but the reality in Christ says to not even have hatred in our heart, (Matthew 5:21-22). The shadow in the law also says "Thou shalt not commit adultery," but the reality in Christ says to even refrain from lust (Matthew 5:27-28). When we debate about the "rules" of how much and where to give, we are focused on the shadow and miss the reality of Christ - He is Lord of ALL! As we focus our eyes on Christ, we will give. We will give generously, "not reluctantly or under compulsion" (2 Corinthians 9:7). We will gladly give of our time, talents, and finances to whatever need He directs. And as we give and join in His work, we will better understand His true blessings. When He is truly Lord of all, we will not simply give according to a "formula" dictated by the law, we will live under His grace and give according to the law's intent. When He is Lord, we will cease to rob God and will joyfully give our lives as we give from the heart.

TXU Energy will travel the state to educate consumers about ways to prevent heat-related emergencies and manage their energy consumption. “Most Texans are fully aware of summer’s sweltering temperatures in Texas,” said Kelli Rod, vice president of community relations for TXU Energy. “But many are not aware of the potential health and financial risks. Through TXU Energy’s Beat the Heat program, we provide consumers across the state with easy ways to stay safe, stay cool and save money during the summer.” Recommended energy-saving tips include: * Temperature settings - Set thermostats at about 78 degrees during the summer. Turn thermostats up or down automatically without sacrificing comfort by installing a programmable thermostat. Use ceiling fans in the “down” mode at the highest speed to push cooler air back down into the room. * Light bulbs - Replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with CFLs. You can run four CFLs for the same cost as running just one incandescent bulb.

* Window treatments - Install storm or thermal windows and doors or double-paned glass. A less expensive alternative is plastic sheeting, which can be temporarily fastened over doors and windows to prevent drafts and retain cool air.

* air leaks - Check for air leaks in and around air ducts, windows, plumbing utilities, fireplace flues, attic entrances and recessed light fixtures. * air conditioning filters - Clean or replace the filter in your air conditioner monthly to help it run more efficiently. * For more tips, please visit txu.com/energytips Research shows the elderly and young children

are most likely to be affected by the heat. This summer, TXU Energy is partnering with community organizations across the state to promote heat safety. In addition, the company will distribute heat safety information to approximately 20,000 Texans. Some of the recommended heat safety tips include: * Drink one glass of cool water for every 20 minutes of heat exposure. * Wear loose, light-colored absorbent cotton clothing. * Avoid eating hot foods and heavy meals. Earlier this month, TXU Energy announced again that it has declared a moratorium on disconnects for customers in need this summer. A flexible payment plan is available for residential customers designated as low-income, ill or disabled, or who are at least 62 years of age. This is the fourth consecutive year the company has offered summer protections to eligible customers. Customers must contact TXU Energy at (800) 242-9113 on or after July 1 to notify the company of their needs and to sign up for special, more flexible payment plans. These measures will be in effect July 1 through September 30, 2010. For additional information contact: April Martin, 214.206.6270

grEgg a. SMiTH’S “BackyarD SpoTligHT” Ms. Sharnette Hyter Beautiful, Talented and Down To Earth Sharnette was born in Dallas, Texas, at the first African American Hospital--Forest Hospital in South Dallas. She grew up in the Singing Hills, Oak Cliff neighborhood in Dallas. She started singing in elementary school at Robert L. Thornton Elementary, and was in her Jr. High School choir at Boude Storey Middle School. Her love for dance and entertainment also led her to the Mary Lois school of Dance in Dallas. She credits her family for always supporting her passions. She also credits her mother and father for her personality, and her aunts and uncles for giving her the best childhood, full of fun and love. Sharnette is truly a country girl who lives a city life. She graduated from Skyline High School in Dallas, where Horticulture was her cluster and Track was her sport. She stayed active in many activities as a youth. She credits one of her early mentors and God-mother, Mrs. Mary Luckey (community activist and long-time President of Southeast Dallas Business Professional Womens’ Club), for molding her into the businesswoman she is today. Sharnette is an entertainment industry veteran.

Sharnette Hyter

She worked for KAZI radio station in Austin, Texas, and credits current General Manager, Steve Savage, for giving her a chance in Radio. She says it was a joy to drive every week to Austin to work. She credits Austin for giving her a chance when Dallas was not ready for an African American that sang House Music. Sharnette was mentored into television by Ester Davis, who inspired Sharnette’s career. Her first show was “Lady Sports Talk.” Sharnette then went on to produce her own television show,

“Jus Shar Show,” where she interviewed up and coming artists. Sharnette got her first record deal in the mid 1990’s in the House Music Genre. She was on a European label, K4B Records, were she had many House Tune Hits. Her most popular song that charted The Top 10 Billboard Chart was “Hooked On Luv.” It is still being played in clubs in Europe today. Sharnette also managed many clubs in the Dallas Metroplex are, and has promoted events across the U.S. Her most memorable moment was putting on event for the 1999 Black Caucus for Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas. Sharnette is also known for her love for live entertainment, and has supported artists and D.J.’s for the last decade. She is known for her contribution to helping break some of the most well known hip hop artists in the South by showcasing them at Club Diamonds--the Club that helped mold the Dallas hip hop scene. She is known as “The Queen of Underground Music,” and loves all Music. After the leaving the Club business she went on to develop several other businesses in a variety of industries. Sharnette started her own Independent Record

Label and Entertainment Company, and says she has learned the hard way about the Music Industry. She has experienced, first hand, what happens when your music business isn’t in order. She expresses this concern by telling others about how she has songs still being played today, for which she doesn’t receive royalties. She stresses that all artists need an attorney and a manager. Sharnette describes herself as a writer, who loves to sing. She is currently writing a book of poems titled “Spiritual Love Poems.” She credits all her success to God. She says that He is her first love and gives her the strength to achieve all her goals. Sharnette is a single parent and encourages young, single women to always pursue their dreams. She believes that “if you dream it, you can achieve it.” She recently performed at the KNON 89.3 Benefit starring Chick Willis at R. L. Griffin’s Blues Palace, where she introduced cuts from her new CD “Southern Soul Party Every Night” which can be found through Serious Inc. Records 972-880-8905 or www.sharnetthyter.com.

Friends, there is only one voice that has the capacity to speak on matters of ultimate reality, and that is the voice of God. The Bible reminds us that God has spoken to us in numerous ways. You hear his clear voice in the written Word, in the consummate expression of His own Son. God’s gracious voice has beckoned humanity since the days of our creation, and indeed, it still beckons, even today, calling us to Himself. The question is: Are we listening? Let us be like Samuel, the Old Testament priest who said to God, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." With that in mind, you need to remember this important truth. It is not that God is not speaking; it is whether you are listening. And when we listen, we can change, if you are willing to apply the truth God has for us. The good thing about this is that God is even more willing to allow His Word to help us when we are offending Him and hurting ourselves. You see it is time to use

God’s Word to “reverse self-destructive patterns.” You need to receive it. We need to submit to its truth and as we get intimate with His Word, we will find it will transform our minds, our goals, and our eternal destiny. How well do you know the One you claim to represent? In 2nd Corinthians 5:20, Paul tells us you are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. Amen! We are to be an ambassador for Christ. To represent Him well, it is necessary to understand His thoughts, to know His mind, and to be aware of His perspective. You need to have the same mindset and attitude as Jesus. Our conduct and perspective must be the same as His. It is time to surrender to God’s way, and take the high way! We can, for when we surrender to the truth of His word, we will know His mind and you will find out that this stuff really does work! Now you know why it is not your way but, God’s way. Amen!

Way, Continued from Page 2 ing God’s Word and relating it to our lives. If you want Christ’s Word to linger within, you need meditate. Now, I am not talking about some eastern mystical type of thing. I think that is something entirely different. When we speak of meditation in this form, we are talking about taking Scripture, reading it, thinking about it, and perhaps form it into like words that relate to your life. You need to take the time to ruminate on the difference that this certain verse and text is going to make in our lives. Meditation, in a very real sense, is conversation. It is God speaking to us and it is our opportunity to listen, think, and respond to it. The third way you can accomplish our surrender is to memorize (Deuteronomy 11:8a; Psalm 119:11). The Lord gives instruction in Deuteronomy11:8 to fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds. Then in Psalms119:11 the bible tells us “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” These verses together tell us that God’s Word is to be permanently attached to our hearts. Amen! Meditation and memorization go together very well. For when we meditate on a verse, the best way to make it apply to our hearts is to memorize it. This is especially true if you are dealing with a sin area and the verse speaks to it directly. Immerse yourself in His Word, because when you do, it is an offensive weapon that wards off the attack of Satan.

June 4, 2010

When you are tempted to go the wrong direction, it is Scripture that is the tool to use. It is effective, efficient and productive to help you live a godly life. The fourth way you can accomplish our surrender is to study. In Ezra 7:10 we are told Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel. We are to know the Word thoroughly. You know what we learn from that pay attention to the details. That is a good lesson for us because if we are truly concerned about what God has to say, we will do a thorough study. We will examine the details. We will seek to understand the context in which it was written. Just as God has taken the care to communicate to us, we will take care as well, knowing His Word the best that we can always being a student of His words to us. The fifth way you can accomplish our surrender is to do. James 1:22 says, we are given this wise command. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Simply; you need to practice what we hear. Perhaps today, a treaty of surrender is what you need. You need to surrender to the truth of God’s Word and let Him change you. Sign the treaty of surrender, and discover the joy God has for you. Ravi Zacharias, the contemporary Apologist, was telling this story recently on the radio. How consoling a voice can be, especially if it is a voice we long to hear.

Reginald Beaudoin remembers the day he met former Dallas Cowboys owner H.R. “Bum” Bright. It was in the break room. Beaudoin started at Bright Banc Savings Association as a reconciler after dropping out of El Centro College, eager to strike out on his own. The young business-minded Beaudoin noted how the seasoned businessman wasn’t too removed from the office to work the check-processing machine or mingle with employees over coffee. Words of Wisdom

from Dr. William “Bill Blair “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

Barber Shop Sports Talk with leon Simon The NBA Championship series is set. The Boston Celtics and The L.A. Lakers. Of the 63 Championships that have been played in NBA history these two teams are responsible for winning 32 of those. This is the gold standard for basketball, East Coast against West Coast; Bill Russell against Wilt Chamberlain; Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson. This series has produced such stars as Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, K.C. and Sam Jones (no relation) James Worthy, Robert Parrish, etc. Time won’t allow me to name all the great players that have played in this game. This is one of the reasons the NBA enjoys the success it has now. The fancy Purple and Gold of the Lakers represent the Hollywood types of the West Coast—the fun and sun, the beaches etc. The Celtics—the East Coast working class; the everyday Joe, the snow, beer drinking truck driver types. The Lakers and Celtics are basketball’s version of the Cowboys and The Steelers. The pastel colors of the Cowboys (light blue, silver, and white) the hard core colors of the Steelers (black and gold). The Tom Landry Cowboys multi shifts and multi formations against The Steelers basic pro sets let’s run the ball mentality. Two totally different life styles. The amazing thing about the Steelers and Cowboys over the years the Cowboys have gone to the more physical running team, the Steelers the more finesse passing and trick play team. The Lakers and The Celtics stayed a little closer to form. Phil Jackson and his Triangle offense, mirrors the Pat Riley’s “show time” fast breaking Magic, Worthy, Lakers of previous Championships. The Doc. Rivers Celtics of Garnett, Pierce, Allen, and Rondo mirror the

Red Auerbach Celtics of Russell, K.C. and Sam Jones. Even later years Dennis Johnson, Bird, McHale, Parrish. The hard defense, tough rebounding, “run when you can” Celtics. For the basketball purest this is basketball at its best. These guys for the most part believed in “bloom where you’re planted”. Today we have a leon Simon mentality where can we put a certain player so he can win him a championship. As opposed to previous years when the thought was, “I have a Bill Russell, let’s build a championship”. Or on the other side, “I am Bill Russell what do I need to make this a championship team”? That could be the reason Russell has 11 Championships. My favorite player of all time and arguably the best player ever, Wilt Chamberlain. I believe the reason Russell has more rings than Wilt is because Wilt went “looking for rings” and Russell “bloomed where he was planted”. I also believe Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant will always have more rings than LeBron James—if he leaves Cleveland. I think there’s a good chance D. Wade will win another championship ring before LeBron wins one if he ever does win one – if LeBron leaves Cleveland! Wade has made it clear that he would like to stay in Miami. I’m not saying that Wade won’t leave, because money is always a reason to leave. But don’t use Championship as an excuse.

WHEREAS African-American music has a pervasive influence on dance, fashion, language, art, literature, cinema, media, advertisements, and other aspects of culture. WHEREAS the prominence of AfricanAmerican music in the 20th century has reawakened interest in the legacy and heritage of the art form of African-American music; WHEREAS African-American music embodies the strong presence of, and significant contributions made by, African-Americans in the music industry and society as a whole. WHEREAS the multibillion dollar AfricanAmerican music industry contributes greatly to the domestic; and worldwide economy; and WHEREAS African-American music has a positive impact on and broad appeal to diverse groups, both nationally and internationally; Now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That the Congress (1) recognizes the importance of the contri-

butions of the contributions of African-American music to global culture and positive impact of African-American music on global commerce, and (2) calls on the people of the United States to take the opportunity to study, reflect on, and celebrate the majesty, vitality, and importance of African-American music. Tuesday, June 6, 2000 -- WASHINGTON, DC -- HOUSE RECOGNIZES IMPORTANCE OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC ; Unanimous Vote also Reaffirms June as African-American Music Month - Almost two years after the U.S. House of Representatives first acknowledged the importance of African American Music to our culture, the House today reaffirmed June as AfricanAmerican Music Month. Passing unanimously (382 - 0), Congressman Chaka Fattah’s House Resolution 509 recognizes the importance of African-American music to global culture and calls on the people of the United States to study, reflect on, and celebrate African-American music. “Music is just one of the many powerful contribu-

tions African-Americans have made to this society and to world culture,” said Congressman Fattah (D-PA). “I am pleased that this bill passed in the month of June -- a month to celebrate the impact of African-American music.” House Resolution 509 acknowledges music such as gospel, blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, rap, Motown, and hip-hop, have their roots in the African-American experience; African-American music has a pervasive influence on dance, fashion, language, art, literature, cinema, media, advertisements, and other aspects of culture; and the prominence of African-American music in the 20th century has reawakened interest in the legacy and heritage of the art form of AfricanAmerican music. This bill encourages the study, promotion and preservation of the diversity and nobility that characterizes this music. It also reminds us all that the history of AfricanAmericans is woven into the economic, social, cultural and political fabric which distinguishes the United States from other nations. In addition,

House Resolution 509 acknowledges the support of African-American Music Month by Presidents Carter and Clinton. Yes, June is Black Music Month, but it seems that nobody is even aware of it and those who are aware treat it as a trivia. Most don’t realize the MAJOR contributions Black music and artists have made to the world, the global economy. Can you believe that African American music is one third of the United States major exports? Our music is one of America’s biggest exports, up there with the top 5%, contributing multi-billions of dollars annually to the global economy. “Music is one of the many powerful contributions made by African-Americans to this society and to our global culture,” says Congressman Fattah. “Through genres such as jazz, blues, gospel, rock, rhythm & blues, and hip-hop, African-American musicians have continued to have a pervasive influence on fashion, art, literature, dance, the media and commerce.” (http://www.iaaam.com/ vote.htm).

It was only hours later that he slipped and hit his head, causing an intracranial hemorrhage. Gary Coleman was dead 24 hours later! Mariah Carey recently pulled out of the Tyler Perry film “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf,” sparking rumors that she is expecting her first child with husband Nick Cannon. Cannon has previously denied speculation that Carey is with child. However, Radar Online quotes a source

close to the couple claims the pregnancy rumors are true. “Mariah and Nick want to keep the pregnancy quiet as long as they can,” the insider said. From the "Not IOn 2010 File":The Tavern at Phipps in Atlanta is being accused of discrimination by former NBA player Joe Barry Carroll and his friend, attorney Joseph Shaw. They have gone before a judge to find out if they have a valid discrimination case against the restaurant. The judge believes that they do. Now they are full steam ahead on an incident that showed them the other side of the restaurant. The men were asked to leave their seats at the bar to accommodate two white women who had just come in. The men were going to be moved and given free drinks, but they were not ready to leave. The Tavern went as far as to call their secuNick Cannon & Mariah Carey rity team to have the

men physically removed. Hmmmmmmm? Rap veteran Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell is being honored on VH1 this week for his pioneering efforts in the hip hop industry. But it doesn’t look like everyone is happy. His daughter, Lacresha, recently posted some disparaging remarks about her father online. It went viral on WorldStar Hip Hop. Lacresha blasted her daddy for being a deadbeat, saying he puts on a façade about his relationship with his kids. It's tough being Luther Campbell a daddy, especially if you've made a whole lotta kids!!!! Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs this week:Andy Griffith is 84, Clint Eastwood is 80, Morgan Freeman is 72, Kenny G is 54, Brian McKnight 41, Wayne Brady 38 and Angelina Jolie is 35. Over $200,000 awarded in college scholarships to local youth.

To many, May 6, 2010 was just another Thursday night, however to 46 graduating seniors of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas (BGCD) and their parents it was a night they will never forget. Chaired by Cheryl Brown from Coca-Cola Enterprises and Co-Chaired by Tammy Gaddis of Lennox Industries, the 2nd Annual TOPPs (Threshold of Opportunities) Celebration took place at the Frontiers of Flight Museum with more than 500 investors, mentors, parents and youth in attendance. Emceed by two BGCD members, Lauren Green, a senior at Mesquite high school and Alexander Jackson a senior at the Science and Math Magnet School at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center; the evening included presentations by President/CEO of KING AEROSPACE Jerry King-Echevarria who served as this year’s presenting sponsor, Ben Lawson Director of Independents - South Region Coca-Cola North America, Joanna Jadlow and Cindy Lodewick representing the Junior League of Dallas and a special appearance by Dallas Cowboys defensive back, Terence Newman who presented two full ride, four year scholarships on behalf of the University of Phoenix and pledged $10,000 from the Terence Newman Rising Stars Foundation. Centered around the academic

achievements and exemplary character and leadership qualities of BGCD members, the TOPPs Celebration awarded more than $200,000 in scholarship funds to 26 youth ranging from $500 to cover books and supplies; to $2,500 from the Dallas Elevators powered by Coca-Cola program

to two youth that exhibit exceptional character and leadership traits, to $15,000 for a graduating senior planning to major in math and/or science; to a full, four year, all expenses paid, scholarship to a member majoring in medicine called the “Just one more” scholarship. This scholarship came through a commitment by a local couple who currently have 5 children in college and when told of the programs offered at BGCD and the scholarship opportunities,

responded by saying “we want to help a kid go to college what’s one more.” In order to be eligible for the scholarships youth had to apply for the funds and were thoroughly interviewed by the BGCD Scholarship Committee chaired by Board Member Neil Schlager. In addition to awarding scholarship funds, 100% of the seniors that met the requirements and participated in the college preparatory program, Collegiate STEPS, not only received a Freshman Survival Kit valued at $300 each that included necessities such as laundry detergent, notebooks, towels, folders, flash drives, sewing kits, trash bags, clothing baskets, hangers, paper towels, backpacks, and more, but every graduating senior received a fully-loaded laptop computer. Kits were presented by mentors from the Junior League of Dallas who met with their mentees every other Wednesday throughout the school year, provided financial aid workshops, writing classes, parent education classes, and college tours, in state and out of state. Finally the evening culminated with Cindy Lodewick, mentor and Junior League of Dallas member, introducing a young man that has worked his way through a grueling Youth of the Year process, by announcing his most recent achievement

of being named the 2010 Southwest Region Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Darrius Shaw. “Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas provides teens with the support systems and opportunities through quality educational and social development programs such as Collegiate STEPS, Dallas Elevators powered by Coca-Cola, the Keystone Leadership club and the scholarship program. Without our investors and dedicated partners, these impactful, life changing programs would not be possible. Over the past year, we have experienced nearly a 25% increase in our membership growth. Most of this growth is due to our teen population who is hearing about our Clubs’ engaging programs. Having recently been awarded a $576,222 grant from Crystal Charities, we plan to expand our recruitment efforts to server more teens over the two years. Our number one objective is for all (100%) of our members to graduate from high school and move on to college, technical school, or in to the workforce” stated Charles English, President/CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. To find out how you can sponsor a youth scholarship or get involved go to, www.bgcdallas.org or call Misti Potter, Vice President of Development at 214-821-2950 ext. 732.

CITY BEAT NOTES FROM UNION HOPE “At Risk In The Community”

Sunday’s church school lesson was one that is desperately needed in times like these the subject was “At Risk in the Community” Jude1:3-7; 1:19-21; 1:24-25. The church then was warned as we must be now to beware of certain men who had crept into the Eld. Lloyd T. Morgan church unaware teaching that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. This seems to be the mindset of many believers, that we can do anything, live any way and grace will cover us. How can that be true of a Holy God? If that is true then God is a God of unrighteousness so desperate to have us that he turns a blind eye to how we live. Jude reminded the church to remember how God rescued Israel from Egypt, but later he destroyed those that did not remain

faithful. We must study the word of God so that we will not be tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, by the cunning craftiness of false teachers. Our morning sermon was delivered by our pastor Eld.L.T.Morgan from the subject “Trust the Christ in you” Phil.4:13. The Apostle Paul who had endured so many things said he was able to do all things through Christ that strengthened him. The same Jesus that gave him the power and the grace to endure and through it all be more than a conquer will give every believer this same grace if they will depend totally on him. What good is it to possess the presence of the Lord and live a defeated life? If we have Christ in our lives we are never alone but we must trust the Christ in us. Union Hope will be the guest of Galilee Missionary Baptist church where Rev.L.R.Davis is pastor, Sunday June 6th for their church anniversary. Be blessed
