Are You Listening Yet? Mark 4:23-25 "If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And He said unto them, ’Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. For he that hath, to him shall Henry Nelson be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.’" Many people simply do not listen; or, if they do, they do not listen so as to understand! I am convinced that many people today simply do not appreciate the importance of listening well! During His earthly ministry, Jesus, often concluded a lesson by saying, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." In His letters to the churches of Asia, Jesus, concluded each with a similar saying: "He who has an ear let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." Amen! The late great poet and author, Anna Hempstead Branch (1875 - 1937), once wrote: "God wove a web of loveliness, of flowers and trees and birds, but made not anything at all So beautiful as words. They shine around our simple earth. With golden shadowing’s.
And every common thing they touch. Is exquisite with wings." Some one in the past that I cannot remember stated that a preacher is not a self-help guru, nor is he or she a political activist or entertainer. A preacher is a truth-dispenser, a proclaimer of the Word of Almighty God. Without people hearing; really hearing what a preacher says the listener will not believe the message. Amen! There are three (3) types of listeners: (1) The "Dull of Hearing;" (2) Those with "Itching Ears;" and, (3) Those who hear with a "Noble and good heart!" The latter is the type of listener that each and every one of us should be! Notice, if you will, that when an individual is afflicted with the "dull of hearing" syndrome, it is hard for others to explain things to him or her! The fault is not with the "subject" material, nor is it with the "presenter;" but, it is with the listener! Some of the Hebrew Christians were like this! In Hebrews 11:5 the writer of Hebrews tells them and us: "There is so much more we would like to say about this. But you don’t seem to listen, so it’s hard to make you understand." Jesus said "That is why I tell these stories, because people see what I do, but they don’t really see, they hear what I say, but they don’t really hear, and they don’t understand. This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah, which says: ’You will
hear My Words, but you will not understand; you will see what I do, but you will not perceive its meaning. For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to Me and let Me heal them.’" Amen! Tell me, my brothers and sisters, "Who would want to be a listener like this?" The Apostle Paul, in his second letter to his young preacher, Timothy, in 2nd Timothy 4:3-4 describes those who are afflicted with the "Itching Ears" syndrome: "For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to right teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever they want to hear. They will reject the Truth and follow strange myths." Amen! Such people only listen to that which is pleasing they do not like "sound doctrine" and, they will find the teacher that they want but, then, they turn from the Truth to fables! Many people today - are afflicted with this type of "hearing problem!" In Luke 8:15 Jesus, describes those who hear with a "noble and good heart:" "But the good soil represents honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s message, cling to it, and steadily produce a huge harvest." The Berean

people were listeners of this kind! In Acts 17:11 it says, "And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to check up on Paul and Silas, to see if they were really teaching the Truth." Amen! Good listening is essential to being blessed it is essential to saving faith it is essential to bearing fruit it is essential to preventing apostasy it is essential to avoiding rejection and condemnation! We need to appreciate the wonderful opportunities that we have as American Christians to be able to listen to Almighty God’s Word! Just as speakers need to learn to speak so as to be understood, we need to learn to listen so as to understand! So tell me, messenger, "How do we do that?" First, of all we need to make listening an act of worship! How we listen to God’s Word being read or preached is as much an indication of our devotion to Almighty God as to how we pray and sing! When we have an opportunity to listen to the Word of Almighty God, we need to do so with a "worshipful attitude!" Just imagine the rapt attention that you would be giving to some famous person or how you would be listening to some great person speaking! Does not the proclamation of the Word of Almighty God

Season the pork with the cumin and salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the pork; cook, turning, until golden, about 6 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium and cook, turning, until a thermometer inserted into the center registers 150 degrees F, about 8 more minutes. Set the pork aside. Add the lemon juice to the skillet, then add the eggplant mixture and paprika; warm through. Season with salt and pepper and add the parsley. Aftermath of the Lancaster Police Shootings… What’s next for Police Chief David Brown? By: Lola Searcy Funeral services for the three victims in the Lancaster apartment complex shooting have been held. The families of the victims face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives while they grieve the loss of their loved ones and the Dallas County Sheriff’s department continues to make sense of what happened in a shooting that claimed the lives of three young men. And according to all preliminary reports, David Brown, Jr. the son of Dallas Police Chief David Brown shot and killed Lancaster Police Officer Craig Shaw and Jeremy McMillian, a young father, visiting his fiancé and newborn son who lived in the apartment complex. There are already rumors circulating that Dallas Police Chief David Brown should resign. What do you think? Here’s what WFAA Chanel 8 anchorman John McCaa had to say about the recent cries for Chief Brown to resign/step down as Police Chief. “We’ve never held adults accountable for grown children’s actions. Why start now?” “What it really shows is that some among us are still upset about Brown’s selection as Dallas Chief”. And now they would exploit the deaths of two innocent men, politicize the murders if a very fine police officer, Craig Shaw, all in an effort to play politics over the chief.” “David Brown, Jr., was responsible—no one else.” And I agree wholeheartedly with John McCaa David Brown, Jr. was a 27-year old man, who from all accounts was emotionally disturbed. He was a man who however emotionally distraught he was; committed a violent and heinous crime. David Brown, Jr. committed a crime. DAVID BROWN, JR. COMMITTED A CRIME! Not his father, Dallas Police Chief David Brown, Sr.! So, why are the “powers that be” and the “haters”, the people who have never supported City Manager Mary Shum’s appointment of David Brown, Sr., as Police Chief

asking for his resignation? And as painful as this time is for Chief Brown and his family, there are those who would dare to suggest that Chief Brown is in some way responsible for his son’s actions. My parents raised me to be a very caring, compassionate God-fearing, law abiding, responsible and respectable adult. I’d like to think that they succeeded. But, despite my parent’s best efforts, I still made/make mistakes. I still did things my parent’s didn’t like or approve of. But, I don’t recall my parents being held accountable for my actions once I became an adult. I know that our parents are responsible in large part for what we do, what we say and how we act as long as we are under their roof, but when we grow up we make our decisions. We are held accountable for our own actions! My mother would always tell people she knew what her children would and would not do in her presence, but what we would do when we were not in her presence, is entirely different. I cannot for the life of me; or even begin to imagine that we as human beings condone or like what happened at River Bend apartment complex. What happened was the perfect definition of a tragedy. But, no matter how upset or sad we are, we cannot and we should not hold Chief Brown responsible! The fact is none of us were there that dreadful day. And none of us know what was going on inside the mind of young David Brown, Jr. We do know, however, the lives of the McMillian, Shaw and Brown families are forever changed. What’s next for Chief Brown? I would suggest that we all give

Equipping Laymen for the 21st Century Part I In this increasing complex life of our Americann Society it is necessary that our Baptist Churches (Especially Black Baptist Churches) have an organization that will atract and mobilize the Gene Turner men of the church, and Out of the Eyes of channel their influence a Layman for a larger kingdom service. If the influence of the Church is to be felt in the affairs of our total culture, then Christian men must take their places in the life and work of the Church and fulfill the responsibility we have to God and our fellow man. "And the Lord God took the man and
put him into the Garden of EDEN to dress it (Gen. 2:15) God did not say this, or anything similar to this about woman. I have a Preacher friend who says, "well the Bible did not say that women could not be in charge of the church either." My comment to this statement was: "But, He did specify Men." Black Baptist Laymen should demostrate to their boys to attend the service of worship and prayer in their Church reguarly, engage in study and training. We hear the statement made all the time, that we have the provisions here, and all they want to do is come and get it. I disgree with that statement --- I believe we must help men discover that they have "Personal Spiritual Needs" to be met, needs that can be met satisfactorly by the Church. If they do not respond to

coming to it, we must find a way to get it to them somehow. Now, the reason I know it can be done David wrote about it in PSALM'S. You remember the 23rd PSALM, do you not? Where David says in the "B" part of the 2nd verse.David says He leadeth me beside the still waters. When the shepherds would take their herds to the sea of Galilee to drink, the water being too rough. God opens up a private pool for the sheep by the shepherd channeling off from the main body of water and it was called "still waters". Many of our men problems can be solved if we can get the word to them that they may understand that a Christian faith is needed. We can show that through BIBLE STUDY together. (It's a must that we get it to them "Some How" (Theology of the old Black Preacher), "SOME HOW" You see, Men are never going to be sucessful in the 21st Century until they are equipped and enpowered to go out and make an impact upon all mankind through their witness. What is it that will cause this impactment? The thing that will give them this Spiritual impactment upon others is the visable showing of empowerment to the unsaved. Well Bro. Turner what will bring about this empowerment in the Christian Laymen? Well as Black Evangelicals we must teach our Christians Laymen from an "Evangelical, Systematic, and dispensational perspective." Let us not forget to read our Bibles, and may God bless you REAL GOOD and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Clean From Within Ambassadors for Christ Cross-Cultural Church God commands us to recognize our sin and tear our heart in sorrowful repentance as we cry Ministries, Inc. Cordially Invites you to join us out for His gracious and abundant forgiveness. as we celebrate our Elder & Pastor The instant we first place our complete trust in Jesus we are born of the Spirit and released from the bondage of our sinful nature. Sin may still war within us and sometimes cause us to stumble, but it no longer has dominion and control over our lives - we have been set free! Jesus often taught of this radical transformation in terms of our Geraldine need for a clean heart. Davidson-Hooker Mark 7:20-23: "What comes out of a man is what makes him 'unclean.' For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.'" Our heart pumps life into all the other parts of our body. If our heart is made clean through the forgiveness of Jesus, the rest of our life will also become clean as His life flows through us; "First clean the inside...and then the outside also will be clean" (Matthew 23:26). But if our heart remains soiled by an unrepentant sinful nature, no amount of outside scrubbing and polishing will ever make us clean. In the above passage, Jesus presented a list of "evils" for our self evaluation, as an outward test of inward cleanliness. Our lives may be free from the obvious stealing, murder, and adultery; but the rest of the list requires us to look a little deeper. Folly is the lack of good sense. Arrogance is an overbearing confidence. Slander is making false statements against someone. Envy is discontent due to another's good fortune. Lewdness is indecent language or action. Deceit means to conceal the truth. Malice means to cruelly tease, and greed is excessive desire. A transformed believer in Jesus Christ, one who is "circumcised of the heart" (Romans 2:29), should never be characterize by this type of behavior. As the Spirit of Jesus makes us into a "new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17) and begins to flow through our life, these old sins ought to slow to a trickle and eventually pass away. Though sin will never completely disappear, it no longer should define who we are. Is the cleansing power of Jesus flowing into all areas of our life? Or are there still areas we claim as our own? If we desire to offer our lives as "living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God" (Romans 12:1), then we must allow our sacrifice to be completely cleansed - we must place our heart more fully in His hands. Let's come before our Heavenly Father, confess our sins, and allow the transforming forgiveness of Jesus to make us clean from within.

Let me remind you that the unselfish prayer warrior is the most qualified one to stand in the GAP for others. Perhaps for those that don't know how to get in touch with God. However, we must remember, that there are a couple of ingredients that should be included Pastor for us to appropriately respond to the holiness of Clarence God. And these ingrediHenderson ents are Confession and Forgiveness. You must set your will to have a pure, undivided heart and a right attitude toward every person, including the Lord God. This prepares one for effective intercession. You can confess your sins for hours, but confession is not complete unless it is coupled with forgiveness. Next week I will define these two very important ingredients.

Listeners must listen to all the parts in order to truly understand! We need to look at the speaker! Looking at the speaker greatly aids our concentration! Looking elsewhere makes it easy for our minds to wander off closing our eyes makes it easy for us to nod off! This requires self-discipline; but, it is conducive to developing a longer attention span! We need to read along in our Holy Bibles we remember more of what we see and hear over what we simply hear! That is why visual aids are often used in ministry but, the greatest visual aid is your own Holy Bible! Your knowledge of the Scriptures can be greatly improved by doing this! As I begin to close, you need to listen with
faith! You need to listen with a willingness to accept and believe what is shown in the Word of Almighty God! You need to listen with a mind to act! To be of any profit, hearing must be accompanied by doing! As important as good listening may be, the blessedness comes only if you as a doers of the Word and not hearers only! As I start to take my seat, this morning, Did you hear it? Were you listening? Listening to Almighty God is very important it is essential for the good of our souls! When sins are between us and Almighty God, He does not listen to us however, we can take care of that problem by receiving His Mercy! The Prophet Isaiah, in Isaiah 55:6-7 tells us: "Seek the Lord while you can find Him. Call on Him while He is near. Let the people turn from their wicked deeds. Let them banish from their minds the very thought of doing wrong! Let them turn to the Lord that He may have Mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for He will abundantly pardon." Today, my brothers and sisters that Mercy is offered through Jesus, Almighty God’s only begotten Son! In Luke 9:35 the bible says, "Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is My Son, My Chosen One. Listen to Him!" Are You Really Listening Yet? Amen!

ENTERTAINMENT Barber Shop Sports Talk with Leon Simon According to ESPN, super stars, LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Dewayne Wade, and possibly other free agents met. The meeting was supposedly to decide where they would sign and play in 2011. If this happens as planned this would destroy sports as we know them. The spirit of competitive athletics goes back to the beginning of time. “My brother is faster than yours; my neighborhood can beat yours etc.” Circumstances make teams. We live on the same block; we attend the same school. I enjoyed the life style of my street, block, school, city, state, and you enjoyed yours equally. And their difference made me not like yours and you not like mine. My school had their colors and yours did too. I grew to love mine and you yours. Likewise, my city had a team and so did yours and so on. Competing and the exhilaration and stimulation of competing, gave the world the idea to start the Olympic Games. We got flags, colors, emblems and anthems to represent our respective countries. Competition was the motivation-- champion ship was the reward. Championship was an attitude and it was so sweet because our circumstances brought us together and our collective effort and attitude got us a Championship. Our love for our neighborhood, school, country, and the commitment to our teammates were the driving forces. Now we have young men who don’t care. What I said means nothing to them. They want to win championships because that’s how the basketball world judges greatness. They want to be in the category with
Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Bill Russell, but they don’t want to “bloom where they’re planted” as did the other guys. Russell won everywhere he went. High School, college, and pros. And he always went where circumLeon Simon stances took him. Neighborhood- high school, University of San Francisco, the Olympics. You know that old philosophy, “dance with who brung you”. Had Russell and those guys subscribed to the same philosophy as these young men they would have had the bar set so high James, Bosh, and Wade would have had to play another sport. ust think – if Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson or Elgin Baylor would have had a meeting to play together, they would have won Championships until Wilt died. And Heaven forbid had that group of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. These guys’s greatness showed in the fact that they chose to “bloom where they were planted”. If we have to compete against each other, then so be it. If these guys were doing this for the money, I would be all in favor of the act. To win a championship? I think a better idea would be to file a discrimination suit against the WNBA and play with the girls! There is a good chance you can catch up with Bill Russell, since you don’t have enough manhood to chase Kobe like he did Mike. Didn’t think Bosh was that weak.

Rollin With A Brotha’ SMOKING KEVAN BROWNING SPECIAL TO THE ELITE NEWS Welcome to the weekend, baaaaby! Look for some cool stuff to do this weekend? How about Dreamgrils at the Fair Park Music Hall or how about some fireworks shows???? They are all over the city!!! From Lonestar Park in Grand Prairie nightly to a day Kevan afters celebration from Browning 8:30 til 9:30 at Fair Park, catching a fitting 4th celebration massive should not be hard! Well how does it feel to have a Dallas Mavericks team without Dirk Nowitzki??? That's right, although he's expected to resign for a 4 year deal at 21 plus mil per year, as of right now Dirk is an un-restricted free agent, who can go anywhere he Lebron James chooses... Worst case scenario, Dirk just says bye and leaves the Mavs... Best case scenario, Dirk and the pull of Jason Kidd, along with Mark Cubans deep pockets attract, one of the other major free agents... Dwayne Wade, Lebron James, Amarie Stoudamire, Chris Bosh and Joe Johnson are available, to the Mav's... Reality is somewhere in the middle, as the Mavs would have to excecute a sign and trade deal, while other such as the Chicago Bulls can just sign a free agent out right! The BET Awards finally grabbed the swagger back this year... From El Debarge To Patti Labelle to Alicia Keys, much love talent, excitement and exhuberance were
available fro free on BET. Thank goodness BET will probably re-run this special until we know the words by heart... From Chris Browns heartfelt apology and promise, to Jay Z Beyonce and Rhiana boycotting, cause Brown was on program.... Finally Ludicrs and DJ Khled, plus Ric Chris Brown Ross, just shut it down! Prince was honored with the Lifetie Acheivement Award... Very Cool!!!! It was fun! Now for some real world drama... Baton Rouge, Louisiana rapper Lil Boosie has plead not guilty to a number of charges, including first degree murder... It all comes from an alledged plot to hire a hitman in the killling of another Baton Rouge resident that Boosie reportedly had beef with! Speaking of the "real" world... Snoop Dogg has attempted to rent out and entire country for his latest video. Snoop approached the country of Liechtenstein in the Swiss Alps and was, of course tunred down... BUT, PEEP THIS...The Dogg Father was turned down, because the government did not have time to process the paperwork to meet the rappers schedule... now that's Ballin! Happy Birthday to YOU and celeb's this week: Fontella Bass is 70, Carl Lewis 49, Danielle "Dee on What's Carl Lewis H a p p e n i n g " Brisebois 41, Mike Tyson 44 and Lindsay Lohan is 24! CITY BEAT Dreamgirls Debut A Success! By: Lola Searcy The stage play based on the Award – winning movie Dreamgirls opened June 30th at the Music Hall at Fair Park. The house was packed as hundreds watched and listened to rousing performances by a very talented and well trained cast. The cast of Dreamgirls was led by veteran actor Chaz Lamar Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd is no stranger to acting having had several lead roles in the hit television show with Academy Award winner Mo’Nique of “The Parkers” television show, appearing opposite Ms. Jada Pinkett Smith in the critically acclaimed movie “Set It Off”, as well as reoccurring roles on the hit television show, “The Game”. Mr. Shepherd starred as Harpo in the Broadway stage play, “The Color Purple”. His portrayal of Curtis Taylor, Jr. the cutthroat, dirty dealing Manager of the Dreamgirls and James (Jimmy) “Thunder” Early was outstanding. Mr. Shepherd proved he has the chops for the Broadway stage. Moya Angela was brilliant in the role of Effie White, the former lead singer of the Dreamgirls. Her dazzling rendition of the song “I’m Not Going” brought the house to its feet. Ms. Angela’s performance was truly award-winning! And “bravo” is all I can say about the performance of Chester Gregory as
James “Thunder” Early. He had the moves, the voice and the swagger! Jimmy got, Jimmy got, Jimmy got soul!! The entire Dreamgirls cast made the Dallas debut of Dreamgirls one well worth the wait! The choreography was right on! The lighting and stage design made you feel like you were in Miami, in Chicago in Detroit in the clubs witnessing the actual performances. The costumes were gorgeous and were a direct reflection of the 1960’s and ‘70’s time period. The beehive hairdos, the conks, the waves, the afros! Big ups to the orchestra under the direction of Alvin Hough, Jr. and Music coordinator, Michael Keller, Robin Wagner scenic designs, William Ivey Long who designed those beautiful costumes and Courtney Young, Choreographer and Paul Huntley Hair designs. The show was great and judging from the numerous standing ovations, I wasn’t the only one impressed! Dreamgirls performances will continue at Music Hall at Fair Park through July 18th!
