Independence Day Celebrating the Fourth of July

By Brenda Blair, Guest Writer In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, picnics, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.

Background During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the American colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4.

Observance In 1791, the first recorded use of the name "Independence Day" occurred. In 1870, the U.S. Congress

made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees. In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.

Customs Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, a long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades are often in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares. While the official observance always falls on July 4th, participation levels may vary according to which day of the week the 4th falls on. If the holiday falls in the middle of the week, some fireworks displays and celebrations may take place during the weekend for convenience, again, varying by region. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_% 28United_States%29). Salute We salute those men and women who are on the front lines every day defending our country and keeping us safe as we go about our daily lives and sleeping comfortably at night. Each one of us knows someone in some branch of the military or many of us have family members serving. Let us not forget to pray for them daily and thank them whenever we can, those individuals who have left their families behind for a while to keep this country safe.

NOTES FROM UNION HOPE

“God calls his people out of Egypt”

Sunday’s lesson was “God calls his people out of Egypt” Ex.14:1525;14:30. Most of the time when God is at work in our behalf it seems to us that his Eld. Lloyd way is just not T. Morgan working. Have you ever had a serious problem and turned it over to the Lord and it seemed that things got worse, but then you look around and he has worked it out. That is what God did for Israel in the lesson. God’s people were in an impossible situation that seems to have been of God’s making, one moment they were rejoicing because they were leaving Egypt only to look back and see their old problem chasing them. God tells Moses to tell the people to “go forward” and before them was the Red Sea. When the Lord tells us to do something that doesn’t seem possible trust Him

and experience the salvation of the Lord. Our Morning message was delivered by Rev.William Jones Assistant pastor of Galilee M.B.C. from the subject;”Trust in the Lord” Proverbs 3:5. The message was very inspirational and timely, because in these times of stressful living we need to be reminded again and again that we should trust in the Lord to see us through. Remember the words of Peter “Cast all your cares upon him for he cares for you”. Sunday we celebrated our pastor and wife’s 23rd Anniversary, the Anniversary message was delivered by Eld.Michael Morgan of Shady Grove Primitive Baptist church. From the moment Elder M.Morgan stood up to preach the spirit of the Lord manifested his presence among God’s people, all declaring their name was “Victory”. Grace Temple Fellowship Baptist church Rev. Keith Hall pastor was also our guest. We enjoyed the fellowship of our sister churches and visitors from various churches of the city. Be Blessed

The children of Rev Paul and Barbara Walker, took time to Celebrate, their parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. This event was held on Saturday, June 27,2009, which is the couples actual wedding day, 50 years ago. What are the odds that this monumental occasion, would occur on the actual day. This is just another indication, that this is a marriage that was

ordained and designed by God! Rev. Walker's love for his wife and family, has been admired by many. Not just in words but in deed. Those who know the loving couple, can say without a doubt, this couple was destined to be joined as one. The children and couple would like to thank everyone who came out, to make this day a memorable one, for years to come.

Never Can Say Goodbye, Salute to the King of Pop! (Michael Jackson August 29, 1958 - June 25, 2009)

By Kimberley Blair Pleasant As I sat waiting for my husband, my phone started to ring! “Kimmy you won’t believe this, Michael Jackson is dead!” My sister replied. “What?” I exclaimed. This had to be some sort of joke! “Not my Michael Jackson!” I thought. I called my aunt and said, “Is it true?” She then replied, “Is what true?” I said, “They are saying Michael Jackson is dead!” “Please turn on CNN and tell me what’s happening!” As I waited for her to turn the channel, the only thing going through my head was how could someone be so evil as to say something so horrific as someone is dead, especially Michael Jackson!” When she spoke these next words I could feel the color drain from my face and my heart skip several beats. “Kim, CNN is saying that Michael has suffered cardiac arrest and they are still working on him, but they are saying that the LA Times has reported him being dead!” “No”, I thought. This can not be happening, Not my Michael!” At that point I could no longer think straight or even drive. As we drove home in silence my husband turned on the radio and every station seemed to be playing Michaels music. My heart hurt too bad to even listen to it, so I put on a rap CD to drown out what I

I am constantly reminded that “Prayer is a Powerful Weapon”! And it must be used against the works of the enemy of our soul. The enemy (Satan) comes to rob, steal and destroy, but Jesus (Our Friend) came to Pastor give us abundant life. Clarence Now in order Henderson for us to enjoy the abundant life, we must respond to the Holiness of God. I’m simply saying, “ We must come clean before God”. We must have a pure undivided heart and a right attitude toward every person, including the Lord God. There are two ingredients that must be applied for us to appropriately respond to the Holiness of God. And they are Confession and Forgiveness. 1st John 1:9 “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”.

Trouble, Hope and Praise

Trouble often brings depression. We pity ourselves. We ask, "Why me, Lord?" Kids are especially prone to pity parties. So are adults. Psalm 43:5 gives us a solution. "Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him, the help of my countenance, and my God." First, being disturbed, getting down, and being troubled are real experiences. We Geraldine should never put Davidsondown people Hooker who go through such times of depression. Second, we should recognize God is the answer to our troubles and depression. We should not look at ourselves and engage in self-pity. Instead, we should hope in God. Third, the hope mentioned in the Psalm is not some vague euphoric feeling about the future. We have this nebulous hope when we hope tomorrow will go well. Rather, the hope mentioned here is a gift of the Holy Spirit. It is a solid foundation upon which to build our present lives. Fourth, since hope is a gift from God, it must be used. It must be exercised. We exercise hope when we turn to God and offer Him praise and thanksgiving. Finally and fifth, guess what? Praise and thanksgiving put a glow on our faces. Inner hope is turned to outward joy. We move from the pits to the pinnacle.

What You Do Today Will shape Your Tomorrow

John 11:21-11:26 “Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" Across our nation for this year most graduations have taken place. Our young people Henry Nelson have graduated from high schools and colleges. Most of the young people graduating from high school this year were born in 1989. Do you remember 1989? In 1989, The Exxon Valdez ran aground off the coast of Alaska, spilling 11 million gallons of fuel. The Communist party lost control of the parliament in Russia for the first time, and the Berlin Wall was torn down. Nintendo began selling Game Boy in Japan. The First George Bush was president, with Dan Quayle as VP. TV Shows Seinfeld and The Simpsons premiered. For the first time, an earthquake was televised live, as an earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay area during the warm up to the 3rd game of the World Series. In 1989 US troops invaded Panama. Driving Miss Daisy hit theaters. 1st class stamps were $.25 and the Dow was running about 2,600. A lot of things have changed since 1989. Video games have come a long way. Prices on many things have changed. The Dow is up. Game Boy has progressed. At the same time, many things haven’t changed. We still have hurricanes and earthquakes. We still have scandals in baseball. We still have troops in harm’s way. And Bobby Jones Gospel show is still on Black Entertainment TV. The Simpsons are still on. There is another thing that hasn’t changed in 18 years either. It has not changed in 18 years. It has not changed in 100 years. It has not changed in 6000 years, and it will probably never change. What has not changed in all that time is that the decisions you make today, will impact your tomorrow. The decisions you make today will shape your tomorrow. Young people, adults, I want you to know that what you do today will shape your tomorrow. The actions you take today, the decisions you make today, will shape your tomorrow. Galatians 6:7says, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows he will also reap.” Ask your parents if this is true. Ask them if they are reaping what they’ve sown. Ask Mrs. Bernice. Ask Mrs. Yea. Ask Mr. & Mrs. Goddard. Ask Mr. Tom. Ask some of the folks in our congregation, whose hair is whitened with wisdom, ask them if they have not seen this played out again and again. Ask them if they are reaping today, the seed they’ve sown in years past. Ask the older man, who traded his family for his career when he was young, if he is reaping what he has sown. Ask that family, with closets over flowing and surrounded by the entire world’s toys, drowning in debt and worried about tomorrow; ask them if they are harvesting what they planted. Ask that person, barely able to move after a lifetime of idleness and

fast-food, ask that person dragging an oxygen tank on his hip coughing with every other step after years of a 2-pack a day habit, if he is reaping what he placed in his body. Ask that woman, abandoned by husband and family after running off with a man at the office. Ask her if her decisions in the past are affecting her today. Ask Pete Rose. Ask Jim Baker. Folks don’t waste your life. But, how do you do that? How do you make the most of your life? I believe there are several steps you can take to make the most of your life. You have to decide right now, what you want to be. Decide right now, what you want to be when you get to the finish line. Decide right now, what kind of life you want to be able to look back on when you get to the finish line. Matthew 25:21 says, “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy!’ Amen! Young people you have to ask yourself some questions. The first question is what benefit will I receive? If I do this, what will I get out of it? How is it going to benefit me? Will this help me? Will it pay off in the long run? Will they help me become who I want to be? Secondly what is this going to cost me? What price are you going to have to pay if you do this? If I spend the majority of my time doing this with my children, what I am teaching them about priorities? Thirdly, what would Jesus do? You have to ask God for help. John 16:24 says, “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name. Ask and you will receive, that your joy may be complete.” James 4:2 says, “You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. You do not have because you do not ask.” Amen! Some of you do not like to do this but you should ask your friends for help. Proverbs 27:17 says,” Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” We work better together, when we hold each other accountable, when we help and encourage one another. Proverbs 28:13 says, “The one who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy.” Amen! James 5:16 says, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and

www.dfwelitenews.com

pray for one another, so that you may be healed." The intense prayer of the righteous is very powerful. When you see sinful things you have to run away from it. 1st Corinthians 6:18 says, “Flee from sexual immorality! Every sin a person can commit is outside the body, but the person who is sexually immoral sins against his own body.” Amen! Let me says, if you see a temptation coming, and you can avoid it, run! Do not wait around, don’t play around, run. If you drop a match in your lap; you do not sit there and wonder how long it can sit there before it burns you. You get rid of it. 1st Samuel 17:48 says,” When the Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly to the battle line to meet the Philistine.” When you know God has given you something to do, when you know you are led to do a certain thing, do it, get about it as soon as possible. Do not wait around until tomorrow because between now and tomorrow, you might change your mind. You are just giving the Devil a chance to talk you out of it. If you know you need to get on a diet, do not wait until tomorrow. Do it today! If you know you need to get on a budget. Do not wait until tomorrow, do not wait until the bill collector is at your door, work on it this afternoon. Do it today! If you know you need to deal with something in your life, if you know there is a habit you need to stop, if you know there is a spiritual discipline you need to add to your life, don’t wait until tomorrow. Do it today because what you do today will shape tomorrow!

Customers on four of Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s (DART) busier routes will be boarding their buses in a different location starting Monday, July 13, and making history in the process as the first patrons of the new Rosa Parks Plaza. The new bus facility was dedicated during a June 29 ceremony that included U. S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, who helped secure federal funds for the project, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and DART representatives. In addition to $600,000 in federal funds secured for the project by Rep. Johnson, DART, the City of Dallas Park & Recreation Department, DOWNTOWN DALLAS, and Dallas Main, LP (landlord of Bank of America Plaza) each provided funds to transform a parking lot into the plaza. Routes 29, 49, 52 and 59 will relocate from the nearby DART West Tr a n s f e r Center to the Eddie Bernice Johnson brand new facility on Lamar St. at Pacific. Schedules will remain unchanged. Rosa Parks Plaza will be the new primary northbound stop for the four routes that will continue on Lamar and will no longer enter the West Transfer Center. Southbound buses on these four routes will serve the bus stop across Lamar at Pacific and will not enter the West Transfer Center or Rosa Parks Plaza.

Plaza will be unique The plaza offers a park-like setting featuring a 13-foot-high wall of water cascading over the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a drinking fountain and green spaces flanked by two bus bays and spacious passenger shelters. The focal point is a life-size bronze statue of Parks sitting on a bus bench that will welcome more than 1,400 daily bus customers. Initially planned as the Elm/Lamar Patron Plaza, the $1.7 million plaza is named for the civil rights pioneer who

The federal contribution was part of a $10 million funding earmark to support enhanced DART bus passenger facilities. The funds will be used to add shelters and improve the system’s most heavily used bus stops with benches, sidewalk improvements and curb cuts for better accessibility. DART has received an additional $3 million in federal funds for bus facilities. Additional information about Rosa Parks Plaza and the new boarding locations is available at www.DART.org.

WAHEED’S PICS PAST & PRESENT ON THE SCENE WITH THE ELITE NEWS JACKSON, Continued from Page 4

group had had many songs that soared to the top of the Billboard’s number one spot with hits like, “Got to Be There”, “Ben”, “Dancing Machine”, and “ABC”. Although the Jackson Five had many hits with Motown, the group felt that they were handicapped by many of Gordy’s policies and their albums started to fall from the top spots on the billboard charts, so they left Motown in 1975. Before leaving Motown and while still a member of the Jackson Five, Michael released four solo albums with Motown. Through the 80’s and 90’s, the media and the world started to refer to Michael as, “The King of Pop.” During this time period, Michael released several albums that went on to become some of the world’s top selling albums, including “Off the Wall” 1979, “Bad” 1987, “Dangerous” 1991, and “Thriller” 1982, which to date has never been topped in the number of albums sold. Because of Thriller’s success and soldout stadiums, it earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World’s Records as the top selling album of all time. Michael also did something in the 80’s that no other African American artist could do, he was so popular and well received that it earned him and his videos top ratings and request with the predominantly white media market MTV. His albums and singles like “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, and “Thriller” took the music industry to a whole new level. Michael was

PAGE 10

also so innovative that Thriller was the first ever movie/video of it’s kind to be made. With stage performances and music videos, Jackson popularized a number of physically complicated dance techniques such as the “robot” and “the moonwalk”. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced many artist from R&B, hip hop, rock, and rap. When listening and watching the artist of today you find that much of their music and moves are mere imitations of Michael. Michael’s music genius and ability to affect generations is unheard of with any other artist. Michael’s success through the years also allowed him many accolades including induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, multiple Guinness World records, thirteen Grammys, thirteen number one singles, and nearly 800 million records and albums sold worldwide. Michael was not just a performer he was the ultimate giver. He donated and raised millions of dollars for beneficial causes through his foundations, charities, and music. In 1985, Michael played an instrumental role in collaborating with Quincy Jones and other artists from across the music genres on the song “We Are the World”, to help raise money and awareness for HIV/Aides in Africa. Over his career, Michael had his highs and lows, from meeting presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, to meeting royalty, the Queen of

England and Princess Diana, to his many legal battles. Michael seemed to have experienced it all. Although Michael Jackson wore many hats over his career, singer/songwriter, record producer, musical arranger, dancer, choreographer, actor, author, businessman, financier, philanthropist, inventor, the only one he didn’t get the opportunity to enjoy was the one called “child”. In the 1995 Song “Childhood” from the movie Free Willy 2, Adventure Home, Michael seemed to have been asking and answering the questions about his life and sometimes childlike mentality. “People say I’m not ok cause I love such elementary things…I try to compensate for the child I’ve never known…Where has my childhood gone…?” Though these words are for a song, it makes you wonder was Michael somehow reaching out for help. Over the years, Michael was in the media for many things and not always for his music. From his marriage to Lisa Marie, too friendly relationship with Macaulay Culkin, as many thought, court cases of indecent relationships with young boys, lawsuits over music rights, and how his children were conceived, Michael seemed to have been through it all. Michael Jackson was the kind of artist that you had to see at least once in your lifetime. I can remember when I was young and Michael Jackson and his brothers came to Texas for their concert. It seemed that every member in my family attended. I don’t know how my

www.dfwelitenews.com

family did it, but we all got in to see the Jackson’s. I can remember hearing people say when referring to Michael Jackson, “If Michael Jackson comes to town and the mortgage needed to be paid, well let’s just say, the mortgage would be short!” These are only a few examples of how he affected the world. Even though Michael’s appearance changed over the years, he and his music were priceless, timeless, and unforgettable. Whether you were young or old, “Black or White”, a “Pretty Young Thing” named “Billie Jean”, a rat named “Ben”, a “Smooth Criminal”, that thought you were “Bad”, Working Day or Night,” or doing homework studying your “ABC”(s), you always knew that when you heard Michael Jackson sing and perform you knew he would, knock you off your feet, and you were in for an “Off the Wall” good time. Michael Jackson, whose phenomenal life and career was cut short due to cardiac arrest, was only 50 years old. He leaves his fourdecade legacy to be carried on by his three children, parents, and siblings. Although this gentle and, at times, fragile “Butterfly” is gone, this “Thriller” known to us all named Michael Jackson will live on in our hearts and minds forever! Always know Michael, We “Can Never Say Goodbye,” to you, “The King of Pop!” Funeral Services are Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 10:00 am at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
