Take This Job and Love It Ecclesiastes 5:18, 19 “Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him for this is his lot. Moreover, Henry Nelson when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work this is a gift of God. In 1977, country singer Johnny Paycheck recorded the hit single “Take This Job and Shove It. The chorus of that song began and ended with these well-known words. “Take this job and shove it, I ain’t working here no more. Apparently, that song really struck a nerve with people, becoming his best-selling record, with over 2 million copies sold and inspiring a movie with the same title. Attitudes towards our work certainly have not changed for the better since then. A February 2007 report by the Conference Board found that Americans are growing increasingly unhappy with their jobs. Today, less than half of all Americans say they are satisfied with their jobs, down from 61 percent just twenty years ago. Although the rate
of dissatisfaction is highest among workers under 25 years old and among those who earn under $15,000 per year, as we might expect, what is really surprising is that even among older and higher paid workers the rate of job satisfaction barely exceeds 50 percent. The Bible is really clear that God intends for His children to find satisfaction and happiness in their work. But exactly how are we to do that? Ephesians 6:5-9 says, “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him. Amen! Most of us get our ideas about slavery from our study of slavery in the United States where slaves were kidnapped from Africa and brought here to the United States where they were forced to work for their masters, often under very cruel and harsh conditions. But the slavery in the Greco-Roman world of Paul was much different. In some areas of Asia
Minor, slaves actually outnumbered freemen. In fact, almost all labor was performed by slaves, even those tasks that we would consider to be “desk jobs like teachers and tutors, secretaries and personal advisors. Most slaves were actually members of the household and the law required the masters to provide them with food, clothing and shelter. In many cases, slaves could save up money and buy their freedom. Paul alludes to that practice in 1 Corinthians 7. Although the masters did have absolute authority over their slaves, there were some laws, mostly quite inadequate, however, that did provide penalties for mistreating slaves. Nonetheless, slaves had absolutely no rights before the law, evidenced by the fact that they could not even marry. For most slaves, the best that could be hoped for were to be owned by a good master, to stay in his good graces and to hopefully one day earn enough money or favor to gain his freedom and become a citizen of Rome. I’m going to share several practical principles with you this week. Take Jesus to work. As I pointed before, one of the biggest mistakes we make as followers of Jesus is that we have a tendency to compartmentalize our lives. On one hand we have our “spiritual lives which consist of

reading the Bible, praying and going to church. Then we put everything else in the “secular category our families, our hobbies, our entertainment and leisure, and, most pertinent to our discussion this morning, our jobs. How many times have you either said or heard someone else say something like this: "I’d really like to serve God, but I have to spend so much time on my secular job." On the other hand, Paul makes it clear that if you really want to love your jobs, then the key is making every day “Take Jesus to Work Day. And I am convinced that if we could learn to do that, Jesus would radically transform our work and the way we view it. Taking Jesus to work with us will revamp your work in three areas. When I honor my earthly boss, I also honor Jesus. Paul commanded slaves to obey their earthly masters with respect and fear. He also says that they are to work as if they were slaves of Christ Himself, because that results in doing the will of God from their heart. 1st Peter 2:18 says, “Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. One of the keys to finding satisfaction in your job is learning to treat your superiors with honor

What to Do with the Texas Rangers Finally Get New Owners Messes We've Made Nolan Ryan & the Chuck Greenberg Group One day, Jesus Christ came to the door of my life, and there was my mess - the mess we all have. The sin, the selfishness, the scars, and the trail of tears we've left. But Jesus said, "No problem. For this reason I have come, to put your things in order." That's what He has done for millions of people around the Geraldine world. That's what Davidson-Hooker He's waiting to do for you...on your invitation. Sin really does mess things up. It messes up marriages, children, relationships, reputations, bodies, minds, souls. A lifetime of living our way instead of God's way is just too much for any human to clean up. No matter how religious or how nice we try to be. The Bible is blunt about how bad the mess is. It says in Isaiah 59:2 , "Your sins have cut you off from your God." Imagine, cut off from the One who has the love, the meaning, and the eternal life that we're looking for. And in case we're operating under the illusion that somehow we can remove this mess that separates us from our God, the Bible simply says, "No one will be declared righteous in His sight by observing the law...All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:20 , 23). There are two deadly mistakes that keep people from heaven. Thinking you're too good to need Jesus or thinking you're too bad for Jesus to take you. Both wrong - dead wrong. The truth is illustrated vividly in our word for today from the Word of God in Isaiah 6 , beginning with verse 3. God's prophet, Isaiah, sees a vision with the Lord seated on His throne and angels proclaiming, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty." This great spiritual leader is leveled when he sees how holy God is. He says, "Woe to me!...I am ruined! I am a man of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty." Then an angel comes to him with the cleansing of God and says, "Your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for." That can happen to you at the cross Messes, Continues on Page 13

By Jordan Blair Fort Worth, Texas, August 4, 2010 Nolan Ryan and partner Chuck Greenberg traded barbs and wiggles with Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban late into Wednesday night. Once the smoke cleared, Nolan Ryan and Chuck Greenberg were victors in becoming the new owners of the Texas Rangers. Part of the deal was to buy the Rangers in January 2010, but major and secondary lenders blocked the deal sending it to voluntary bankruptcy court. Enter Mark Cuban, in between what has been said as bitter attacks and accusations as both sides tossed millions of dollars at acquiring the Texas Rangers as the bankruptcy court auction continued from mid-day through late Wednesday night. “My client wants to own this ball club and is willing to put money on the table not blunder, not bluster, not fluff,” said Cliffton Jessup, the Dallas attorney for Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Houston businessman Jim Crane, after a lawyer for the Nolan Ryan lead group asked for the auction to be suspended until “unfair” procedures were changed. In courtroom drama that lasted almost
15 hours, Pittsburg attorney Chuck Greenberg and Nolan Ryan fended off the rival bid from Mark Cuban and were victorious in the bankruptcy court auction, winning the right to purchase the Texas Rangers with a $385 million cash bid that will total about $593 million in the final total. It was costly when Mavericks owner Mark Cuban stepped in with his bid - the cost and the bidding went way up from where they thought it would be, with the assumed debt and paying off of creditors assembled in the wake of previous owner Tom Hicks, the night was considered a victory for the fans and the Ryan lead group. Some believe that Cuban might not get the votes from major league baseball even if he had won the bid. Meanwhile, while on a road trip in Seattle, the Rangers rallied to defeat Seattle and maintain the lead in the American League West to a season-high nine games. Hats off to team manager Ron Washington for steadying the team through this tumultuous period. In the life of the Texas Rangers baseball team, we might just have a winner this time - Go Rangers!

NOTES FROM UNION HOPE “Sharing God’s Grace” We were blessed and challenged by the church school lesson “Sharing God’s Grace” Phil.1:18b-29. Paul believed the power of the gospel was in the message not the messenger. While he was in prison other preachers began preaching more openly for various reasons, some preached hoping to add to his affliction, some preached Eld. Lloyd out of sincerity, others for T. Morgan money and fame, but Paul was sure that however Jesus was preached people would be saved so he rejoiced that people were hearing about Jesus. He told the church that “For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him.” It is apparent that Paul was not a prosperity preacher but believed the greater blessing was in being counted worthy to
PAGE 8
suffer for Christ. What do you believe? Our morning message was delivered by our anointed pastor Eld.L.T.Morgan subject “The Triumphs Of The Cross” Col.2:13-15. Of all the lives that have suddenly closed on the face of the earth, no one seemed more like failure and defeat than the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. To be "hanged on a tree" was, in the estimation of men, to have the memory of your name blotted out of earth and Heaven. But His Cross, the symbol of the curse, becomes the symbol of eternal triumph. Here His enemies, seen and unseen put Him to an open shame; here, also, He made a show of them openly. The death of Christ was the greatest achievement that ever was accomplished in this world. Its influence and results are as far-reaching as the uttermost parts of heaven, earth, and hell. As the climax of man's sin and failure is seen at the Cross in the crucifying of the Lord of Glory, so Christ's greatest triumph has come by His Cross. Be Blessed

ENTERTAINMENT Barber Shop Sports Talk with Leon Simon Football is in the air. Yes, it that time of the year again! All 32 professional teams are in camp. As of this past Monday, all DISD schools are preparing for this season. I decided yesterday to visit Justin F Kimball High School. Kimball is a very young team this year, but they do have the return of coach Carlton Nelson. Nelson was the defensive coordinator for the Knights in their Glory days. In a conversation with Coach Nelson I liken his defensive philosophy to the Republican Party. No social programs ,“ we don’t give up NOTHING “. Being a young team doesn’t change that thinking. You can expect Kimball to be stingy on “D”. Last year Kimball was 5th in their district. 17 of their players were suspended for a fighting with A. Maceo Smith players.. That didn’t help the ’09 season but it could have made this year’s team stronger. A lot of young men had to step up and play big last year. I’m sure those young men will have a special place in the coaching staff’s planning for this season. The Knights basically have a new staff led by Nelson. New – but extremely capable. In addition to Head Coach Nelson, the staff consists of Offensive Coordinator Justin Owens, Assistant Stacy Collins; Defensive Coordinator, Tommy Bonds, Jasoon Reed. Special Teams: Devon Forston, Demarco King, Ernest Sterling, Al Baysinger, David Robinson, Bo Johnson. The skill positions on offense at the pres-
ent are unsettled; with the exception of Quarterback. The Quarterback position is manned by sophomore Traveon Thibodeaux - 5’ 10” 160. Tra, as he is called by most that know him is a three sport athlete. He’s very athletic, and most of all very cerebral, which should translate into few Leon Simon mistakes. Since most High School games are lost and not won, few mistakes is a great asset. The running backs at present are in the capable hands of Sr. Daveon Johnson and Junior Johnny Brown Kimball being a young squad could mean a slow start, but don’t count on that. They have good size, great team speed, and the special teams seem to be in good hands. I think the punter, Austin Franklin was pretty consistent that should keep coach Bonds’ defense in position to compete without being on his own end of the field most of the time. A few young men to look for: Isaiah Norton DT, Kenneth Lynn, Austin Franklin DB,WR, P Demarcus Jackson DL, OL, Chris Jones CB. Finishing 5th in the district last year could very easily be misread and some teams might think playing the Knights could be an off night .That would be a big mistake,

Integrity although it is not quite as clear as in some other versions, Paul warns against two specific ways that we can destroy our integrity in the workplace. The first is what he calls “eye-service”. He is addressing those who only work hard while the master is watching and then loaf when he is away. Of course, that is not really relevant in today’s workplace is it? The idea is that we should be 100% trustworthy, whether someone is watching what we’re doing or not. Paul makes this same point in a slightly different way in another of his letters: Titus 2:9, 10 says. “Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.” Amen! The other practice that Paul warns about is “men-pleasing”. In today’s language, I would call this “brown-nosing”. The idea here is that a person works in a way that is designed to make brownie points with the
boss, but which is in effect actually an act of disobedience because it goes against the best interests of the company and/or our superiors. This can take a lot of different forms in the workplace saying one thing and doing another, gossiping about other employees in order to make ourselves look better, tooting our own horn. Once you realize that Jesus is watching everything you do, that is a great motivation to make sure that we give a full days’ work for a full day’s pay regardless of whether or earthly boss is watching or not. And it also prevents us from trying to be men-pleasers rather than God-pleasers. You need to give your employer your best effort. That means that you should be as skilled and well-trained as you can possibly be and that you should do our jobs to the very best of our ability and never put in a less that complete effort. Obviously, there is a balance here. There is nothing in the Bible that commands us to be workaholics. In fact, there is much to warn us about that, but overall, the principle is that

JOB, Continued from Page 2 and respect, not because they necessarily deserve it, but because it honors Jesus. Amen! As followers of Jesus, I am convinced that we need to really seriously consider whether we really ought to change our jobs or whether we just need to learn to serve God right where we are right now. One of the ways to transform your view of your job is to think about how what you are doing meets the needs of other people. By taking Jesus to work, the first thing that happens is that our mind-set is transformed. And that new mindset naturally leads to a change in behavior. Let’s focus on just three attributes that ought to characterize our work. Obedience is really the crux of what Paul commands of slaves they are to obey their masters. I think we all know what it means to obey our bosses. As with children’s obedience to their parents, there is obviously a limit to our obedience to our superiors in the workplace. We can never obey an instruction that would cause us to violate a clear command of Scripture.

followers of Jesus should be exemplary employees who consistently work hard to the very best of their ability. Colossians 3:23, 24 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Amen! For those whose work produces that which is good and useful, they can look forward to an inheritance from the Lord. If your motivation for going to work is just to get a paycheck, then it is very likely that someday you will come to the point where you join Johnny Paycheck and sing “Take This Job and Shove It”. But if you are motivated by the fact that the way you serve others in your work will one day result in being rewarded by Jesus and being given the privilege of serving in His kingdom, then there is no possible way to have that kind of attitude. Do you want to take your job and love it? Then take Jesus to work with you every day. Amen!

ON THE SCENE A Conversation With Divorce Court’s Judge Lynn Toler By: Lola Searcy You know her as the Beautiful, caring, compassionate, and smart Judge on KDFW – FOX televison’s “Divorce Court. She’s the Judge they turn to when they make the unfortunate decision to divorce. But this coming Saturday, August 7th, she will put down her gavel for a microphone; her bench for a comfortable chair and deliver some sound advice to those in attendance . For the first time ever in a major market, “Divorce Court’s Judge Lynn Toler comes to Dallas with Divorce Court: An Afternoon with Lynn Toler. That’s why when Craig Radow of Twentieth Television called and asked if I wanted to interview her for the upcoming event in Dallas, I jumped at the chance to talk with her about her show, her life and why she decided to take her show on the road. She was so pleasant; I felt like I was talking to a “girlfriend a “sister I had grown up with. Of course, I asked her the obvious question: “Are the people and situations on Divorce Cout real or just for show? Her reply was: “very much so. She also told me I would not believe what really goes on behind the scenes and off the air. “We’ve even had to call the police on some of our guests. Then, I was curious to know if this Ohio native had always wanted to be a Lawyer. Her answer was a very serious, yet comical, “No. “I wanted to be a doctor like my Father and my sister, but I couldn’t do the math. I find that hard to believe seeing as how she is a graduate of Harvard University and The University of Pennsylvania Law school. She began practicing law in Cleveland in 1984. In 1993, at the age of 33, she was elected

While on the bench, Judge Toler volunteered actively in her community creating innovative programs for young offenders such as Woman Talk, a program designed to intensively mentor young, at-risk girls. With all the success her television show, “Divorce Court is having (television’s longest running court show), what prompted her to bring her legal expertise to the stage? “For me the hardest part about being a judge is that you are always doing damage control. You are either trying to clean up a mess or hoping to put a lid on the chaos. But I like to get out in front of things. out of most of your well-fare check it’s to late, and on top of all of this, when you go to the store and leave him with your children he might kill one before you get back home. This world has never seen this type of Black Males ever in the history of the Black race in the United States of America. Now, do not get me wrong, I know that we still have some great kids, and some great men still out there. I am writing about those who fits this category and believe me there are many. I get sick to my stomach when I see young Black men walking around holding up; their pants, and pants down below their buttox showing filthy red underwear. They have gone to another style now. Instead of wearing a sleeveless undershirt, they have gone to walking with the shirt in their hand and going bareback. Our young Black males do not have any respect for anybody, including themselves. They will say anything anywhere no matter who is present. They want somebody to say something to them in order for them to “ go off on you”, as they put it. I saw a young “BABY’ 2 years old following his mother and a young man holding his pants up with his hand and walking wide legged. Our young men are walking the streets not looking for a job, but drugs. Most companies will not hire them anyway, because they cannot read the application, because they skipped school too many times when the reading class was being held. Parents we have to get it right somehow. Here we have children who do not have a clothing bill, do not have a house, or rent note, no food bill, light bill, gas bill, or telephone bill, but stay on the phone while he is there. Bring his other friends home with him, going in your ice box, propping their feet up on your coffee table etc. And you do not say a word. If that were my Mom and Dad, everything
about you would be sore from head to toe. I would have been afraid to go home, because Harvey Turner might have shot me. Young men today have no respect for their parents at all. All young parents should turn to Proverbs Chapter 22:6, 15 and 23: 13,14. Children understands life better when he/she is forced to understand it’s meaning, so as one parent to another let’s get it right, and do what these scriptures say do. One thing, we have too many one (1) parent homes. Women have never been a boy, but a man has, so he would know more about how to raise a young teenage boy, because he has been this young man’s age. “Been there done that”. The best remedy for the sagging problem is that all business places do exactly like the McDonnell’s on I-35 and Camp Wisdom. They have a sign on the door, stating sagging will not be tolerated, in other words do not come in here with your pants sagging beneath your buttox. What many people do not understand is the fact that people tends to think the way they dress, and they acts out the part that the dress identifies. Sagging started in the prisons with sissies trying to attract the real men. When they got out of prison they continued this type of dress, and our young men saw this and thought this was cool, and now it has gone through the ceiling. People my age and older spent years trying to make others races understand that we were human, and that we were men and not boys. But this generation has come along and destroyed more than a 100 years for Black Men, and parents condones this kind of behavior in the home. This is an indictment against any parent who goes along with their children’s dysfunctions. Let us not forget to read our Bibles. May God bless you REAL GOOD and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

A Glance into the Life of Velma Prince Smith, Ph.D.
The Lord has called home Dr. Velma P. Smith an ardent devotee, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, niece, dear friend, cousin, and gifted educator and counselor. She as a faithful servant of God did RSVP on August 1, 2010. Dr. Smith was born in Terrell, Texas on July 10, 1938 to parents Fred Prince and Lillie (Henderson) Prince. She received her high school diploma from Burnett High School graduating Co-Valedictorian of her class in 1955. We are glad to have her transition to her heavenly home, although she will surely be missed in her earthly home by family and friends, which includes a multitude of students who were the beneficiaries of her uniquely wonderful and comforting personality, and well tuned counseling skills. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, her lifelong ambition was to be an educator and counselor. She prepared herself well in the fulfillment of this dream after completing high school by receiving formal education earning a BS degree in Business and Education from Bishop College in Marshall, Texas in 1960, a masters in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Texas in 1967, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Administration and Guidance from The University of Minnesota in 1973. She began her career in education as a third grade teacher in the Hope Public School District, Hope, Arkansas in 1960. After one year, the family moved to Dallas where she worked for two
August 6, 2010
years as Secretary to the Registrar at Bishop College when Bishop moved its entire campus from Marshall to Dallas, Texas in 1961.The next seven years were spent as a third grade teacher in the Wilmer Hutchins Independent School District, Hutchins, Texas. Dr. Smith returned to Bishop College as Director of Recruitment and Admissions, Director of Guidance and Counseling, and Testing and Evaluation after receiving her doctorate. After completing seven years at Bishop, Dr. Smith was employed by the Dallas Independent School District as a Chapter I Specialist and Guidance Counselor. Of particular note is the fact that she, along with the late Dr. Versia Lacy were the first female recipients of a Ph.D. in Education in the Dallas Independent School District. Her dissertation in 1973 on Dallas students entitled: An Investigation Concerning The Impact Of An Experimental Counseling Condition Of The Grade-Point Averages And Retention Rate Of Three Racial And Ethnic Groups In A Two Year Community College typifies her continued interest in the progress and achievements of all the youth she served. In 1993, the family moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan where her husband, Dr. Roscoe C. Smith was hired as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instructions and she was hired as a high school counselor and Lead Intervention Specialist for the Benton Harbor School District. Retiring on July 31, 1998, they moved back to Texas closer to family and old friends. She spoke of the reaffirmation of her faith when she and her husband visited the Holy Land on a spiritual journey in the summer of 1985. They visited many of the places referenced in the Bible and she was baptized in the
Jordan River where Jesus was baptized, fished in the Sea of Galilee and walked the hill and worshipped at the place where her Lord and Saviour was crucified. She joined church at an early age and was a member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church at 9550 Shepherd Road; Dallas, Texas until her death. Velma felt she had been extraordinarily blessed and rewarded to have had forty-one wonderful years in both public and private education from the preschool through collegiate levels. She often expressed her greatest blessings and joy came from her fifty-three years of marriage to her husband Dr. Roscoe C. Smith, who is now left to mourn with her mother Lillie (Henderson) Prince White, their two beautiful daughters Robbie S. Redmon (Chris) and Jacquelyn M. Smith (Cecil), their four grandchildren Christie K. Redmon, Clayton K. Redmon (Monique), Tiffani M. Young (Raynauld), and Cecil C. Smith III (LaShawndra), their four great grandsons Clayton K. Redmon, Carwell Kenneth Redmon, Aloye Nuray Young, and CeShaun Smith, their four great granddaughters Kennedy Maurie Roberts, Claire Kennedy Redmon, Zaquavia Nichelle Young and Fayth Lynee Michelle Smith, two special aunts, Clarenc Mae (Prince) Hellums and Annie Ruth (Henderson) Lewis, her Sorors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Joel E. Jackson Entered into the arms of his Heavenly Father on August 1, 2010. Born June 1, 1963 to the union of David E. Jackson and Jo Ann Jackson. He was a graduate of David W. Carter, class of 1981. He accepted Christ at an early age and a member of East Gate Baptist Church Rev. Homer Reagan, Pastor. Left to remember his legacy father David
