Mary Bennett’s 70th Birthday Bash Dubbed ‘Party of the Year’ By: Ashley Gibson More than 100 of Mary Bennett’s closest friends and family members recently danced the night away at her 70th birthday bash, which was hosted at the Dallas Black Academy of Arts & Letters. Escorted to the party by her husband Hillie Bennett in a white, stretch Hummer limousine, the fancy ride was just one of the highlights of the evening for Mrs. Bennett. As one of the party hostesses opened the doors for Mrs. Bennett’s grand entrance, Stevie Wonder’s voice could be heard crooning the “The Birthday Song.” “It really warmed my heart to see all my family and friends come together and celebrate my birthday,” Mrs. Bennett said. “It’s in moments like these that I realize just how much God has truly blessed me.” Mrs. Bennett’s children had been meeting for months to organize a party that their vibrant and ener-

getic mother wouldn’t soon forget. The party was complete with a deejay, a scrumptious buffet, and live performances. One of the most memorable performances came from a group by the name of “The Three Pops” which is comprised of the editor of Elite News, Jordan Blair; Reverend George Allen; and Dwayne Simpson, Sr. The men sang a sweet rendition of My Girl that had the audience captivated. Other presentations included a couple of solos from gospel recording artist Rodney Boyden; poetry from Mrs. Bennett’s church family; and a special tribute by her two eldest grandchildren. Some of Mrs. Bennett’s guests included radio talk show hosts Judge Mary Ellen Hicks and Cheryl Smith. Also, a representative for Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price presented Mrs. Bennett with a special proclamation. Though Price was unable to attend due to a prior engagement, he insisted that his assistant

NOTES FROM UNION HOPE “People Grumble”

“People Grumble” Numbers 11:16; 10-15 was our lesson for church school . This lesson could have been an article in our news papers today because it shows the true nature of people, the more the Lord bless them the more they long for what they do not have. This is like our present society forever looking for something more. God was feeding them daily, all Eld. Lloyd they had to do was step outside T. Morgan their tents and gather food enough for the day, but they became discontented with the manna and began to grumble against the Lord and Moses. It is strange how Satan when reminding us of our past always show us the good side of yesterday and blinding us to the bad things that was also a part of yesterday’s experi-

ences. Israel was remembering the different food they enjoyed in Egypt but forgot about the slave masters whips. Their attitude not only displeased Moses to the point of asking God that if this was the way it was going to be then just kill him. Many times pastors today grow weary with people they are trying to lead in the church. Are you a grumbler? We can have a home, job, family, cars and good health and still grumble about what we don’t have. God is displeased with grumblers. The message of the morning was delivered by our own Evangelist Vickie Dean. Her message was “The remedy for spiritual indifference” Rev.2:1-4. The church was warned that we must be careful not to let our love for the Lord to grow cold. If we are not careful we can do church work with a heart that is detached from the Lord. We should not lead a double life and if we are repentance is what we need. Harts were blessed. God bless.

Prayer Closet

PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

Have you noticed that the most inspiring part of your prayer closet experience is the part that leads you into adoration and thanksgiving. When I read my Bible, I pay close attention to the praises as well as the promises. Praise is first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 29:35. Leah named one of her sons “ Judah Pastor ”, which means “ Praise ” Our Lord came from the Tribe of Clarence Judah. Why was a David a man Henderson after God’s own heart ? Among other things, he praised God with his whole heart. The word “ Praise ” is mentioned more than 100 times in the Book of Psalms alone. Reading the Psalms will help us to Praise God, even at prayer time. “ Oh that men would Praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works ! ” Psalms 107:8 When there is Prayer in the Closet, there ought to be some Praise in the Closet also.

Why Suffering?

There is a lot of suffering in the world. It tugs at our heart strings most when we see a young mother with cancer or a youngster with leukemia. Then there are the problems of the elderly. Some old folks are abandoned in so called rest homes and just left there to die. And need we mention the wars, famine, persecution, and injustice in the world which all contribute to suffering? It makes you ask, "Why? Why all the suffering?" From God's perspective, there are several reaGeraldine sons for sufferDavidsoning. God gives us Hooker one of those reasons in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. The Bible speaks of the "God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we are comforted by God." Here is a profound reason for your suffering. Out of it all you can learn about the comfort only God can give. Once you have really learned the lesson of God's comfort, you can direct others to that ultimate source of comfort. Jesus Christ is our chief example. Jesus Christ was perfected through sufferings (Hebrews 2:10). This was so "that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God" (Hebrews 2:17). Now Jesus Christ is in heaven with the same body in which He suffered praying for you and me. Yes, God is the "Father of mercies and the God of all comfort." Turn to God, not just halfheartedly or with bitterness about your troubles; but turn to God and beg for His mercy. Ask Him for comfort!

Why Are We Losing Our Young People?

Ecclesiastes 12:1 “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, "I find no pleasure in them.” On April 20, 1999 in the small town of Littleton Colorado, two high school students Eric Harris and Henry Nelson Dylan Klebold enacted a all out assault on Columbine High School. The boys plan was to kill hundreds of their peers using guns, knives, and homemade explosives. They walked the halls and classrooms killing at will. When the day was over 12 students, one teacher, and both Eric and Dylan were dead. The questions still remains today as to why they did it? Since then we have seen the Virginia Tech shootings, the schoolyard shootings in New York and other tragedies involving young people and violence. The answer as to why in all these cases is simple. These people were lost. They felt unloved and unwanted. This brings us to our topic this week. As parents and as a church why are we losing our young people? As Children grow older, they often. lose interest in spiritual matters pull away and become distant they start missing church then quit going all together they start dating, get engaged, or marry a non-Christian person involved in drugs, alcohol, other temptations. Ultimately when these things happen we will lose them to the world. As a church and as parents, we have a responsibility to our young people. Proverbs 22:6 says, “It is the duty of both the church and parents to train children.” You are partners in the training. Parents cannot expect the church to train kids for them. If what the church teaches is not seen in the home we can lose our youth also. Proverbs 22:6 is the general principle to live by when it comes to youth. There are many reasons why we can lose our youth. Understanding why may help prevent losing more. There are several factors that bring about this situation and process of losing our youth. One of the first that comes to mind is bad influence of their friends. Friends often have the most influence on youth, because that is who they spend most of their time with. There are warning signs that a friend may be a bad influence. Proverbs 1:10-19 says, “My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. If they say, "Come along with us; let us lie in wait for someone’s blood, let us waylay some harmless soul; let us swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse" my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; for their

feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood. How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds! These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves! “ Amen! Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it. This shows how the bad influence of a friend can lead down a path to destruction. Even a good Christian child can be lead astray by the wrong friendships. Proverbs 12:26 says, “A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. Do not make friends with a hottempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared. The Apostle Paul recognized how friends could mislead us. 1st Corinthians 15:33 says,” Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character." These warnings tell us 3 things which are “The power of friendship, we may or may not see it, or where it could lead.“ You may be wondering how this can happen and How does it happen? First there is the Gradual drift. Hebrews 2:1 says, “We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” Secondly, they get desensitized to sin. Psalm 1:1says, “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.” Thirdly, Pressures mount when you are outnumbered. Exodus 23:2, 33, says, "Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. Do not let them live in your land, or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you."Amen! God did not want the Hebrews to fall victim to the influence of all the other religions and cultures and the world they would encounter in the Promise Land. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s Will is; his good, pleasing and perfect will.”Amen! The fourth is it is easy to become like them. Proverbs 23:20 says, “Do not join

www.dfwelitenews.com

those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. Amen! If anyone has ever hung around with a crowd like that, you know sooner or later bad things happen. Sometimes you as parents are Poor example of parents. Young people learn from what they see! The General Principle of Matthew 5:14-16 says, "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven. It is the duty of parents to set a good example for their kids. Some parents use the excuse that they are young or first time parents and they are not sure what to do. Even if you are young you can still set an example. Everyone should Follow Gods guidance. 1st Timothy 4:12 “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” Amen! Weather you like it or not children will become like their parents. Proverbs 20:7 says, “The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him.” Everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb

Ron Price Keeps Giving Back to the Community Makes Historic Announcement By Jordan Blair Dallas, Texas – On Tuesday, August 4, Ron Price, representing District 9 on the Dallas ISD School Board, said it is a very unique thing that we are able to honor people while they can still smell their flowers. Price went on to make a tremendous announcement about two new schools that will be named for two outstanding National figures. One school will be named for the first elected African American President, in the history of this Country, President Barack Obama (changed from Billy Earl Dade Middle Learning Center). The other school will be named for the first Hispanic Justice Sonia Sotomayor (changed from O. M. Roberts). Ron Price sat with his District 9 Advisory Council members, Mrs. Willie Mae Coleman (a 74-year-old resident of South Dallas) and Lisa Lopez. They beamed with pride as they talked about their accomplishments and their role working as a team, and how it has made it even sweeter. Members of Lulac said that they appreciate how Ron Price has been an advocate for all members of District 9. Rev. Wright of the Commons Social Justice Civil Rights Organization said that Ron has always done a good job of representing District 9 and we need

August 7, 2009

more people like him to bring Blacks, Browns and Hispanics together, such as moves like what was made today. Mr. Price only invited the Hispanic and African American press because he wanted them to be the first to break news on this historic moment. Price has served the District well by evidence of his accomplishments. He has been the leader in District 9 as it has undergone a complete educational renaissance while working with the citizens and the grass root people in the community. Since the beginning of Price’s first term in 1997, he has always set the bar high for educating students in District 9. The number of recognized schools has grown from 3 to 13, and there are four exemplary schools in District 9. This has been the trademark of Ron Price all the way starting with the Pearl Guards and it hasn’t stopped now. Price has constantly guided his principals and their staff to focus on behavior, discipline, a strong student dress code, with emphasis on no earrings for the boys and high standards for all students. He has made a strong push for parental involvement and his personal commitment to always be accessible to the people he serves.

Rollin With A Brotha’ COMMUNITY CALENDAR SMOKING KEVAN BROWNING SPECIAL TO THE ELITE NEWS

Welcome to tha weekend baaaaby! Hey don't forget, the deadline for Federal College Money Applications for the Spring College semester is September 1st! My daughter leaves in 3 weeks and by college is expensive! Tonight comedian Mike Epps sets it off at Nokia Kevan Live in Grand Prairie... I've Browning only seen him once in person. That was a memorably funny perfomance at Ft. Worth's Bass Hall. If you like more intimate surroundings, BET comedian Lavell Crawford brings his big man humor to the Addison Improv thru Sunday. You could actually see both Mike Epps Tonight, Method Man, Redman and Ghostface Killa Saturday at the House of Blues and Lavell Crawford Sunday at the Improv...That's for those with a high energy level and disposable income, lol! By the way R&B singer Avant visits the H.O.B. Wednesday, don't let him keep ya out of Bible study ladies, lol! Paula Abdul has made official what has been long rumored - she is quitting "American Idol" following a season-long phase-in of her replacement Kara DioGuardi, who was confirmed Monday to be returning next season. "With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return" to the hit Fox TV singing contest, Abdul said in a posting on her Twitter account. By the way, did you know that Twitter is not cool anymore with kids in general. A new study shows that they feel it's an old people’s thing. I shoulda known when I see this 50+ guy on Fox Four talking about tweeting. 50 plus is not old, but let's keep it real...To a teenager, it's ancient

and they don't want to do what oldsters think is cool! Did you know all kinds of Michael Jackson products - including cell phones and X-Box add-ons – could be coming down the pipeline if a judge signs off on a merchandising deal? If you've been following the Michael Jackson drama since his recent death, you know that his will left guardianship of his three children to his mother Katherine. Jackson also left his father Joe Jackson out of the will. But because the singer's estate is potentially worth billions, it's easy to see how or why Papa Joe would want to play Grandpa to MJ's kids when that is exactly what the performer said he didn't want to happen. Well, we can all rest easy because the 79year-old family patriarch has come out and said that won't get involved with raising Michael's kids. All the Jackson family will be rich for generations, keep em in your thoughts and prayers. So many wealthy people have shown that it Steve Harvey takes more than money to live! My partner Bloodhound Benny reports filmmaker Will Packer is planning to adapt 105.7 morning guy Steve Harvey's best-selling book "Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man" into a feature film. The announcement should be made soon. R.I.P. Naomi Sims...She was the first black supermodel and died over the weekend following a long battle with cancer, according to her son, Bob Findlay. She was 61. Happy Birthday this week to YOU and Celebs: Martha Stewart is 68, Dorian Harewood is 59 and Randy Debarge is 51. “Do our God Take Bad Raps?” Yes, our God does take bad raps, or does God get accused for things He did not do. We use the word RAP in order for the young to be able to identify with the meaning. Have you ever heard someone say I knew God was going to take him out of here, because he was such a bad boy/girl, God don’t like ugly. You’ve heard people say many times that God took someone on home 10, 20, 30, 40, or 5 years old. How many times Gene Turner have you heard someOut of the Eyes thing like this? of a Layman When Kennedy was assinated here in 1963, people were running around here saying that God took him out, and some were saying that his time was up, and some say his time just simply ran out. Here is a list of God’s moral attributes: 1. Holy 2. Love 3. Just 4. Good God is just and He has no respect of person, God does not love me any more than He loves you, and He does not love you any more than He loves me. God would not do something to you that He would not do to me, and vice versa. God has promised all mankind three score and ten years upon the face of the earth, this means that every man, woman, and child has the same starting line and the same finishing line. Amen. The moral attributes and the character of God will not let him break His promises, which means that God cannot break His promise even if He wanted to do so because of His Justice. If God would break His promise He would cease to be God. You see, here is a man who ran a stop sign and hit a MACK TRUCK, and some one say I knew the Lord was going to take him out because of his so and so, and he did this and he did that. Not so, the fool ran the stop sign himself whether he was drunk or what, but God had nothing to do with him running that stop sign, he did

that on his own. A lot of people think when President Kennedy was assinated that God took him. Why would any Christian think that when a little disarranged man like Oswald hides behind some boxes in a building and pulls the trigger on a rifle and takes the life of an innocent person. Now, how in the world did God have anything to do with this sneaky person’s action? In Matthew 2:16 Herod sent troops into Bethlehem and slew all the children two years old and under. Did God take them out of the world, or was it Herod and his troops? You see, God gives all mankind the same promise. God has promised everyone seventy years on the face of the earth. Men, women, and children falls short of the seventy year promise because of something we do to ourselves, or what someone else do to us, not God. Now, the question arises, could God have prevented this from happening? Yes, God can do anything He wants to do, He is God. God does not prevent most things, or some things because of His permissive will, God allows things to happen because He can see around the corner, but we can only see to the corner. A man and wife turns over their car and dies, but their two year old son does not get a scratch. God’s permissive will is always in effect. We do not know why God allowed those babies to die in Beth-lehem. Looking around the corner God might have seen a rebellious generation like their fathers. You do know there were many rebellious Israelites during this time. I said maybe, not a fact, but anyway you look at it God always knows what He is doing, but we don’t. You see, these babies are all going to heaven at their death, and God knew this. They might not have if they had reached adulthood, because of the way their ancestors lived. Let us not forget to read our Bibles, and may God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Jordan & Brenda Blair attend the party, stating that “Mrs. Bennett is like a second mother” to him. Also in attendance was Bobby Gibson, a nephew of Mrs. Bennett who traveled from Detroit to surprise his aunt. Mrs. Bennett hadn’t seen her nephew in more than 10 years. “It was a heart-warming event to see Bobby,” Mrs. Bennett said. “I am so glad he came to share this special night with me.” “Joyful” and “fun-filled” come to Shirley Davis’ mind as she recounts Mrs. Bennett’s party. Mrs. Davis, a close friend, traveled from Oklahoma City to participate in the festivities. “I was so glad to see how everyone showed

her so much love that night and she was so gracious to all of her guests,” Mrs. Davis said. “And, what fun it was to watch her dance to some of her favorite songs.” From the Cupid Shuffle to the Cha-Cha Slide to even the classic Electric Slide, Mrs. Bennett and her guests kept the party hopping on the dance floor. As the night drew to an end, several guests commented that this was one of the best parties they had ever attended. Ashley Gibson is the granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Bennett.
