In The Spirit of Kindness Ephesians 2: 4-7 “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Henry Nelson Christ Jesus in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. I work in an environment where kindness is something that is called for. It is expected, but not always given so it makes the work place a cautious place to operate in. That is why this message came to life. Kindness seems like something that is pretty ordinary, but when you start to really think about it, kindness is remarkable and inspiring. The exhibition of the fruit of kindness can literally change the lives of those around us. When you think of kindness, chances are that one of the first names that comes to mind is Mister Rogers. A year or two before Fred Roger’s death someone in Philadelphia where he lived stole his car. The news media got a hold of the story and before long all the local TV stations were broadcasting the story. Thousands of Philadelphia citizens saw the story, including the thief who stole the car. This criminal had dealt with his own share of difficult times, but he knew that when he was small Fred Rogers had been a posi-

tive influence on him. Within 48 hours the car was back in the spot where he left it, along with a note saying "If we had known it was yours, we never would have taken it!" Kindness may be one of the most underrated fruits on the fruit stand. Probably more people have been brought into the church by the kindness of real Christian love than by all the theological arguments in the world. How many times in your life have you felt discouraged or felt like everything was against you only to be met by someone who was willing to show kindness to you. I wonder how many lives have been changed by someone showing the fruit of kindness. When I think of the word kindness, what comes to mind is thoughts of the nice grandmother figure that is waiting there with a bunch of cookies for you? Is kindness emotional feeling? The dictionary defines kindness as: the practice of being or the capability to be sympathetic and compassionate. The English word does not fully capture the meaning of the original word. Kindness is more than being capable of being sympathetic and compassionate. The very nature of exhibiting kindness to another person makes that person have a sense of worth and usefulness. By exhibiting kindness to another person we are affirming their worth as a person, we are telling them that they are important enough for us to be inconvenienced, by them or that we would give them special attention. It is closely related to being gentle. Jesus’ kindness is the believer’s example. Matthew 19:13-14 says, “When some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them, Jesus said, ‘Let the

children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’’ Amen! Matthew 11:28-29 says, on another occasion He said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest."Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls Amen! Jesus by allowing the children to come to Him showed them their worth to Him. The children were important to Him. His display of kindness to them let them know that. When Jesus calls those who are weary and heavyladen to come to Him for rest, His kindness toward them shows us how important we are to Him. It has been said that "Kindness is a language the dumb can speak and the deaf can hear and understand. Jesus understands our weakness. He knows why we have weaknesses. Jesus has compassion for us. If Jesus did not understand our weakness, then He would not be able to be kind to us when we struggle. Hebrews 4:15-16 says, “We have a chief priest who is able to sympathize with our weaknesses. He was tempted in every way that we are, but he did not sin. So we can go confidently to the throne of God’s kindness to receive mercy and find kindness, which will help us at the right time. Amen! Jesus walked in our shoes so He can relate to us. Jesus will be gentle and kind to you because He knows why you are struggling. You can come to Him when you

struggle! When you understand other people and can walk in their shoes, you will treat them with kindness also, you will make them feel worthy. Telling the truth in love is part of being kind. Jesus could have come to live as a man and He could have just spent His time excusing your sin by telling us things that were not true.â€? It is so sad to see so many people who are living a life of sin have people excuse their sin by telling them they are born that way. I saw a man on television Thursday evening tell another person that God created him to be a homosexual so therefore God did not look down on that sin. Somewhere along the line, someone, probably under the umbrella of kindness or compassion, told this man his sin was not his fault so therefore he could not overcome it or should he even try to overcome it. John 8:32 says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.â€? Amen! Jesus has set us free from the bondage of sin by being truthful to us. If we are going to be kind, we must share the truth in love with other people. We cannot pervert the truth because we do not want to hurt someone’s feelings or that we are afraid to challenge them. It is hard to be kind to those with whom you do not forgive. Jesus has forgiven your sins. Romans 3:23 - 24 says, “Because all people have sinned, they have fallen short of God’s glory. They receive God’s approval freely by an act of his kindnessÂŁ through the price Christ Jesus paid to set us free from sin.â€? Jesus found us worth saving, so He saved us from our sins. All the

2nd Annual Charles “Turk” Butler Golf Classic Tournament honors the legacy of the late Mr. Charles “Turk” Butler The 2nd Annual Charles “Turk” Butler Golf Classic Tournament was held on Monday, June 21st, 2010 at the Thorntree Country Club in DeSoto, Texas. The 8:30 a.m. shotgun start consisted of a hole-in-one contest for a $10,000 cash prize (sponsored by Freedom Chevrolet), a raffle, and awards luncheon. The March on Washington Whose Country Is It? By: Lola Searcy I know you have all heard about Glenn Beck’s recent March on Washington this past Saturday – August 28th. He called it his march to “restore honor” to America, to take “our” country back. I just have one question for all the Glenn Becks and Sarah Palins of America…Where have you all been? Where were you all when President George W. Bush lied to us about weapons of mass destruction and sent our economy in debt to the tune of 10 billion dollars a month? And who in America was concerned about restoring our honor when Karl Rove and the likes stole the 2000 elections from then Democratic Presidential candidate Al Gore? Where were all of you “God – Loving” Christian, decent, law abiding citizens when thousands upon thousands of people were sitting on top of their homes; wadding through high waters; cramped inside the New Orleans Superdome; waiting for President George W. Bush to send help? Where was your honor when President Bush and his cronies lied about weapons of mass destruction and sent young men and women off to their death; fighting a war we had not business fighting!? And let’s talk about honor. Up until Barack Obama was

elected President, foreign leaders wouldn’t give Americans, namely George W. Bush the time of day! I can clearly recall a time when we (Americans) were hated and revered by countries who at one time were our allies! Where were the Glenn Becks and Sarah Palins of this country then? I’ll tell you where they were, they were going about their business living and prospering off of the Bush administrations trickled down economy! And where were all of these “Lovers of God and country”, when people were dying every day because they didn’t have access to affordable healthcare? Where were they when the economy was falling apart because the banks and CEO’s of large corporations were walking away with millions and millions of dollars in bonuses, all the while people were being laid off from those very same companies? Where were they? I’ll tell you where they were, right here! You see, as far as this “restoring honor” “tea party” mess, there was nothing wrong with America until Barack Obama; a Black man was elected President. And I for one have had just about enough of it! I’m sick and tired of these Glenn Beck, Sarah Palins and the Tea party types talking about how much they

love this country and just want to see our country go back to its core values. News flash!! This is “our” country too! Mine and President Barack Obama’s! This country’s core values of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness have been long gone for those of us of African descent. I’m sick of all these people sprouting and shouting out all this “our country” crap! They say it like they are the only persons who exist! It was “your” country when we were in Africa minding our own business! America didn’t become my country until you, as my Brother Malcolm X said, “We didn’t land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us! So, when you (Pilgrims /Americans) landed on us, it became “our” country, too! And I think if I hear another one of them use their so – called Love of God and “this country” as their excuse for what they do, I’m going to SCREAM!!! How can you Love God whom you have never seen and hate your brother whom you see every day?! We have some serious problems in this country if we can truly and honestly say that we Love God, and then turn around and follow after the likes of Glenn Beck, the Tea Partiers and Sarah Palin! Love is an COUNTRY, Continues on Page 9

“Christian Stewardship” John 9:4 First of all; what is stewardship? Stewardship means that one has been put over the operation of another persons holding, or possessions. Not only to be in charge, but to build or produce more than was turned over to him. In John 9:4 Jesus tells Gene Turner of his own personal purpose Out of the Eyes of and what He must do, but a Layman more than that He gives us direction of what we should be about who will be with Him in the Kingdom. This is a declaration, which identifies work of the Christian and its purpose. We are all called by God to do a certain work within Kingdom building, but we must recognize that calling and respond to it by working the works of Him who sends us out. The next part of this statement: “ While it is day,” suggests to us that there are restrictions as to the time we have to do this work. When we look at the word “Day”: speaking in the context it means opportunity. You see, we only have the opportunity to do a lot of things during daylight hours, seeing

without obstructions. Daylight hours only last for a certain time during a 24-hour period, so, it is important that we work diligently while the sun is up in order that we might be able to see what we are doing. You see when things are going well with us, we must not forget that things will not always be well, there will be some dark hours, so, we should do all we can while we are able to do them. You know, we are always tempted to forget what comes after a sunny “Day”. We forget that the sun will not always be high in the sky and always shining. Once the day is gone it cannot be recalled again, so, we must work as much as we can that Day. Our lives will not go on forever, so we must work His will while we have the opportunity to work His works. Too many good deeds go undone, many kind words go unsaid, too many great potentials go untested, and simply because of opportunities we failed to capitalize on. Many of us misuse our sunlight. We simply waste sunlight being idle. Today will never be again, it cannot be recalled, so we must work while it is “Day”: Jesus makes this statement so as to bring about a sense of urgency to our minds, it was meant to be a challenge to us that we might understand the importance of doing the best we can while we can. Our potential to serve depends upon the willingness to take advantage of

opportunities. We as Laymen in the church should work to save our young men while we have the opportunity to do so. You know what most of us think? We think working in the church is the work we should be doing. Yes, we should work in the church, but let us not get it mixed up with the work of the church. You hear people say things like, “ sing for the Lord child”, She/he should not be singing for the Lord, the Lord does not need your singing, and He needs your willingness to work his works. Whatever we do in the church or on the church grounds should be for praise only. When we give praise to God on Sunday morning, because that’s the only time some of us go anyway – that’s what we should do to let God know that we appreciate what He has already done for us as an individual. That’s not working for God that’s praising God. When you help someone who cannot help him or herself or when you lead others to Christ, then we are working while it is “Day”. When night cometh no man can work. Night means Days end. It’s going to come no matter what happens. Our day will end some dark night, so, let’s work while it is “Day”! Let us not forget to read our Bibles. May God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Water Your Own Garden It has occurred to me that many spouses do not water their garden adequately. "What is she talking about," you say, "I don't even have a garden!" You may not have a garden in the traditional sense, but do you know your marriage can be likened unto a garden as well? Within the institution of marriage is a sacred foundation that should be careGeraldine fully nurtured so Davidson-Hooker that it may beautifully thrive. Within this proverbial small plot of land, we must till the soil so plants may breathe and spread their roots, yanking out weeds that may choke them and prevent the seedlings from growing. Within this same godly terrain, it is often necessary to built up a small fence around the garden, to prevent hungry animals from stealing what we have carefully planted and nurtured. I've spoken to many discontented spouses, hearing such comments as, "She doesn't care about my needs," "He doesn't listen anymore," "What happened to the romance?" Each one of these concerns is a seed that has the potential of becoming a flower or a weed. What determines the future of each seed is if we will take the time, energy and care to dig down deep in the soil, and to offer each seed the gift of ourselves. Are there un-addressed issues? Then address them! Are their hurts and neglects? Then feed and heal them! Just as it is wise to water our own gardens, we must also regard our relationship with God just as tenderly; taking care to water our faith with the word of God, and pulling out weeds that may threaten our walk. How does YOUR garden grow?

She spent vacations with them and their children and she recalled the sad time when her mother passed and they spared no expense in laying her mother to rest. She and her husband Kitt came to live at Friendship Towers in 1996. But, it wasn’t until 2003, that she began cooking meals for the residents. She says she did it because,” she loves people” and to make sure that they have at least one home cooked nutritious meal a day. And she says she does it because she considers all of the residents her family. I asked her what her secret is to being happy. She says, it’s what her Father told her years ago. “Don’t cry, don’t whimper, take it easy help and take care of others when you can and God will take care of you.” She says its true advice, because God has certainly taken care of her and Kitt! Friendship Towers is a Section 8 utilities paid High Rise apartment complex for the elderly and disabled located at 3030 South Cockrell Hill Road, here in Dallas. If you or someone you know is in need of housing, please give Cindy Harrison a call at 214.330.7764. It’s a beautiful place to live and Mrs. Gussie’s food is DELICIOUS!!!

Prayer Closet PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

Let's consider prayer as a unique channel of conservation between you and God the Father. It is spending time with Him because you love Him and you want Him to reveal His will to you through a consistant dialogue between you and God. Your conversation Pastor will deepen into comClarence munion as you share Henderson heart to heart with the Lord. During this personal fellowship with the Lord, you will experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit, and being refilled over and over again. Even as He made His ways known unto Moses and His acts to the children of Israel, He can do the same for you. Therefore, I strongly suggest that you keep the channel clear between you and God, and watch God show up and show out. "Oh! Yes just for you".

Gwendolyn Jones welcomed everyone to the Gala. State Representative Helen Giddings gave remarks on behalf of the elected officials in attendance. While we dined on Breast of Chicken, scalloped potatoes, crookneck squash, whole honey glazed baby carrots, carrot cake and Italian Crème Cake, we enjoyed the soulful and sultry sounds of the group known as VINJAC. Attorney H. Ron White, First Vice President of the Urban League’s Board of Trustees acknowledged all local and State elected officials. President and CEO of the Dallas Urban League presented awards to this year’s award recipients. Mr. & Mrs. Sam Bussey were the recipients of the Buddy J. Minyard Corporate Award. Mr. Bussey had always dreamed of being his own “boss”. Inspired by a brother, he and Mrs. Bussey started their trucking company out of their home. He purchased the first of his fleet of tandem dump trucks and aggressively pursued contracts in the trucking industry. He contracted with such companies as Texas Bitulithic Company, Austin Paving Company and Weaver Construction to name a few. In 1971, the business changed its name to Bussey Trucking, Incorporated. The company had now been in operation for over 50 years and includes a foreman, several truck drivers, 30 owners – operators and an office manager. The couple are noted philanthropists and support schools and

organizations including the Urban League of Greater Dallas, Paul Quinn College, St. Philip’s School and Community Center, March of Dimes, Dallas Black Dance Academy, Black Academy of Arts and Letters and Wiley College. Rev. George Pryor, Senior Pastor of the New Birth Baptist Church was the recipient of the Whitney M. Young, Jr., Humanitarian Award. Pastor Pryor has been the Pastor of the New Birth Baptist Church for more than 45 years. Under his leadership the church has acquired several sites, including its present location at 444 Ledbetter W. Ledbetter Drive. To accommodate its growing membership, which now numbers over 3,000, the church now sits on 13 acres and has over 38,000 square feet in improvements. The Jesus Center was opened in 1993 which houses a Day Care Academy, seniors programs and community events. Rev. Pryor has mentored more than 60 young men and nearly 20 are now ministers. A scholarship was established in his name and more than 30 students have been awarded over $50,000 in scholarships. He has received numerous awards for his work in his church and the community. They include recipient of Daily Points of Light Award and recognition by the State of Texas under Governor Rick Perry; recipient of Outstanding Texan Award by the Black Legislative Caucus; recognition by the City of Dallas under former Mayor Ron Kirk for

Community Service; and recipient of the Kuta Keza Kazi Award for Community Service by the Dallas Regional National Alliance of Black School Educators. ENTERTAINMENT Barber Shop Sports Talk with Leon Simon The NFL season is less than 2 weeks away. The Cowboys played in the first preseason game in the Hall of Fame game against the Cincinnati Bengals. That gave the Boyz and the Bengals an extra preseason game. The game was a decent game because it was so early. This week will be week 5 the last preseason and wouldn’t you the 1st game was the Cowboys best. A great, or should I say some great coaches and teachers say, you can’t stay the same you either get better or worst daily. I know Columbus went east to get west to prove the world was round. Someone please tell me what the Cowboys are proving by going backwards in their progress to get to a Championship? I know that Michael Jackson popularized the Moonwalk – APPEARING to go backwards. Appearing or actually going backwards only works in entertainment not pro sports. It takes pure genius to find 53 men with no more pride or fight than I’ve seen out of the Cowboys this preseason. And Captain Kangaroo (The coach) apparently gave them a prepared statement to give the media. “We don’t want to show nothing in preseason” to that end they have succeeded. For that they deserved an Emmy or an Oscar. Only Hollywood can disguise 53 football players that proclaim to be championship talent into 53 men that look like actors. The “powers that be” shouldn’t even let them play in the stadium where the Super Bowl will be played, let along brag that they should be in it. Tell me what would

they do at the Super Bowl? Maybe a half time show Moon walking? Jason Garrett calls plays as if he’s coaching the 1992 C o w b o y s . Somebody that truly knew how to open a hole, or pass block. Someone needs to tell the O-line that you have to actualLeon Simon ly move your feet to open a hole. I used to see Leonard Davis at the Texas relays and I would tell my friends, this guy is so large he looks like a statue. After watching him play right guard for the Boyz, I didn’t realize how good that description of him was! The only time the middle of the Cowboys line moves is to let blitzers through to hit Romo. And if they’re a little late getting there Tony will wait on them. Tony Romo used to try and extend the play by scrambling, but I was told Garrett wanted him to stay in the pocket and be like Tom Brady. Tom lost a year due to injury, not being able to move. If you want your Quarterback to be like Tom Brady you have to coach like Bill Belichick. Neither Garrett nor Wade Phillips has anything in common with Belichick, other than the fact that they’re all employed as coaches. Belichick is a great head coach. Jason and Wade are good assistant coaches. At this point I can’t say that Jason is even a good assistant.

COUNTRY, Continued from page 4 Action Word! Because I LOVE this country, I supported President Obama’s healthcare legislation; because I LOVE this country; I supported financial reform; because I LOVE this country, I supported the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq; because I LOVE this country, I LOVE President Barack Obama because this country’s system elected him! Barack Obama received the required number of electoral votes and he won the popular vote! George W. Bush won the electoral votes; not the popular vote in 2000. So, stop talking about your LOVE for this country and let’s work together to turn this country around! This economy was going downhill long before Barack Obama was elected President! Gays and Lesbians were yelling about same sex marriage and their rights long before Barack Obama was elected

President. You do the math. If you spend 10 billion dollars a month on a war for 7 ½ years and you have no job growth to support it?!! C’mon, now! Here’s the bottom line for me. For as long as this country has been in existence, we (African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, ) all nationalities trusted our life and livelihood to White men who were elected President of this country! They haven’t always done or made decisions that were in all our best interests, but we peacefully protested! We went through the proper channels to be heard and to get our message across! I don’t ever recall Dr. King dishonoring Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson. Dr. King fought for people of all colors, all races and all ethnicities! Glenn Beck is right about one thing, this is “OUR COUNTRY”!!

Remember that others have been kind to you. David and Jonathan were best of friends. When King Saul was trying to kill David, Jonathan, Saul’s son, protected David and showed him kindness, even though he knew it would mean he would never sit on the throne. When Saul and Jonathan were killed in battle and David became king, he looked for anyone who was alive in Jonathans family. Most of the time this was done to make sure no one else would claim the throne from the previous king. David wanted to show kindness to Jonathan’s survivors because of the kindness Jonathan showed to him. He was able to do this through Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth. He was crippled because of an accidental fall when he was escaping after Jonathan and “Wewere Need YourDavid Head took In Our Business” Saul killed. care of Mephibosheth; he remembered the kindness shown to him. 1122 W.
