miraculous signs and wonders, Jesus told him, "you will never believe." How can I believe in a God I cannot see? Some people think that if God wants us to believe in Him, He should make himself visible so we could talk one on one, touch Him, hear him Henry Nelson verbally, and see him with our own eyes. "Why does God put us in a position where we have to try to believe in Him? Why does He toy with mankind, teasing us with evidence that is good enough to make us uncomfortable, but never coming directly out and making himself clear? What is so great about "faith" that He desires it above an obvious revelation of Himself? Hell, just write it across the sky, nice and big: "Here is your proof. Believe in me or go to Hell! Sincerely, the "Almighty." You would not have to spend an afternoon arguing history to anyone. Everyone would be on their knees." Amen! If God wrote something across the sky in a huge multicolor pen; is that the thing that would convince the world that God exists? Better yet, what if God came down and started healing people, raising the dead, doing all kinds of things. Then we would see it with our own eyes, right? Then believing in God would be a cinch. Wait a minute, let me ask you something. Do you believe everything you see or do not see? If seeing is believing, the next time you are driving on a hot road and see shimmering water in the distance. Get out of your car and go take a drink. Sunrise, move, and set remind self eyes they are lying to you. Blue sky tell eyes you are not seeing right. The sky has no color ask any astronaut; seeing is not always believing. Not only do your eyes play tricks on you, but there are many things that exist which you cannot see, taste, touch, feel, or hear. How many of you believe in Gravity? You have not seen it, touched it, heard it, or tasted it. You cannot even feel gravity, but you can feel its effects. Believe me. believe in Him." Would all people put their faith and trust in Jesus? No way. Now some would say, "Wow. Awesome. Miracle." and believe. But you know what happens over time. The impression fades. It may be a month or a year and the force of the miracle would fade. It happens with all of us. We begin thinking it was more of a dream than a real event. Maybe I was hallucinating. Maybe someone spiked my orange juice that day, or I ate moldy cheese. And when you tell other people, they are going to say that you have lost your marbles. Then you will doubt whether it really happened or not. So you will want another miracle. If you believe in God because of miracles, you will need a steady diet of them, frequent and more incredible every time. Jesus knew this. He came down, walked on water, healed the sick, and raised the dead. It was not enough for some people. Matthew 16:1-4 says, "The Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus. So they asked him to show them a miraculous sign from heaven. Evil and unfaithful people look for a miraculous sign, but the only sign they will be given is that of Jonah." Mark 8:12 says, “With a deep sigh Jesus asked, "Why do these people demand a sign? I guarantee this truth: If these people are given a sign, it will be far different than what they want!" Amen! Mark 13:22 says, “In the last days Jesus said "False Christ’s and false prophets will appear. They will work miraculous signs and do wonderful things to deceive, if possible, those whom God has chosen." Revelations 16:14 says, "These are spirits of demons which do miracles." Revelations, 13:13, 14 says, “The 2nd beast performs miraculous signs. It even makes fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people. It deceives those living on earth with the signs it is allowed to do." Amen! Even though God does miracles and gives signs, I do not believe he does it all the time to get his point across. He does not need to. He has given us plenty of evidence that he exists. Romans 1:20 says, "Since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities; his eternal power and divine nature are clearly seen, being under-

Now that the temperatures are finally starting to cool off, people can enjoy the outdoors more. But, there is one thing temperatures do not affect, and that is number of families who go hungry every day in North Texas. Each month the North TX Food Bank agency pantries serve hundreds of thousands of families throughout Dallas County. The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) is doing something about it and so can we. Representative Helen Giddings (DDallas), in her efforts to help with closing the gap of hunger in our community, will be hosting her 2nd Annual Movie Night in the Square with the Mayor in Lancaster to benefit the North Texas Food Bank. The purpose of this event is to raise the awareness of hunger, help with filling the North Texas Food Bank pantries, and provide families the opportunity to enjoy a free and fun activity while serving a great cause.

Giddings said, "I am convinced that almost every one of us has something to give. If we can't commit to something large... commit to something small. None of us can do everything; the only thing required is that each of us does the something that we can do." We are asking Movie Night attendees to donate canned food and non-perishable food items to help refill the pantries that feed our hungry families. The NTFB will be on-site to collect the donated items. Join Representative Giddings and Mayor Marcus Knight at Historic Town Square located at 200 N. Dallas Ave, Lancaster, TX for a free Movie Night in the Park on Friday, September 11, 2009 from 7:30-10:00p.m. Showtime will begin at 8:00 pm featuring the hit movie, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Comerica Bank Announces 3 New Banking Centers & Philanthropic Support of more than $255,000 in Dallas’ Southern Sector

In front of the soon-to-open full service banking center at North Bishop Avenue and West Colorado Boulevard, Comerica Bank today announced plans to open three new banking centers in Dallas’ Southern Sector between now and late 2010. To date in 2009, Comerica has contributed $255,785 of philanthropic support to the Southern Sector. “Through Comerica’s continued expansion, we will be giving our cus-

tomers greater access to our services, making it more convenient to assist our business partners. Additionally, through philanthropic giving and volunteer service, we hope to benefit the lives of our neighbors and contribute to the revitalization of Dallas’ Southern Sector,” said Irv Ashford, Jr., Vice President of External Affairs, Comerica Bank. Comerica Bank already operates two full-service banking centers in the Southern Sector, and the new banking center at Bishop and Colorado is the first of its three new facilities in the area. Comerica expects to open two additional banking centers in 2010 at the intersections of Wheatland Road and Interstate 20, and Fort Worth Avenue and Bahama Drive. Since Jan. 1, 2009, Comerica Charitable Foundation and Comerica Bank have contributed to multiple Southern Sector non-profit and community organizations – and non-profits who support programs in the Southern Sector – including the Southern Dallas Development Corporation ($50,000),

I.M.A. President Dr. S.C. Nash & Bishop Harold Edwards

The PLAN Fund ($50,000), Business Assistance Center ($15,000) and YMCA ($15,000), among several others. Funding has primarily been directed toward programs that focus on job train-

ing, micro-loans, housing assistance, continuing education and financial literacy initiatives. “Comerica’s vision is to help people and businesses be successful, and our non-profit partners share this passion. Through the invaluable services they provide, these organizations are helping equip entrepreneurs, young people and seniors with the tools they need to be successful rather it be in a business setting, school classroom, with their finances or throughout life,” said Chuck Gummer, President, Comerica Bank Texas Market. “Comerica Bank’s efforts contribute toward the half-billion dollars of new investment into the southern part of our city,” said Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. “Their new banking centers will help create a more business-friendly environment that will create jobs and promote economic growth, hopefully including badly-needed grocery stores and other common neighborhood services that people in other parts of our city and COMERICA, Continues on Page 10

Cry Out to the Lord

In many ways we are our own worst enemies. We make excuses for our transgressions, blaming everyone and everything but the real cause-- our own weakness. Just why this is I'm not sure. Perhaps we flesh and blood human beings are so used to succeeding in business and financial matters, that it is difficult to admit there are some Geraldine things we Davidsonhave a hard Hooker time controlling. So, not wanting to make ourselves appear weak, we blame, make excuses, and do whatever is necessary so the outside world will know that we are in control. The Bible tells us that without God, man is a weak creature seeking only those things which please the flesh. The problem with this is that before long we find ourselves prisoners of our flesh. And as a prisoner, one is not free. One can also not partake of God's promise of salvation when flesh is the 'master' and God is pushed to the wayside. Inviting God and His Son Jesus Christ into one's life does not automatically guarantee life will not have it's ups and downs, or that all temptations will disappear. What a relationship with Christ does guarantee is the strength to overcome evil with good when we focus our attention on God and His will. We can also rejoice that through our faith, trust and reliance in Him, salvation is promised. No, it is not easy to admit we are imperfect and weak creatures. But the rewards of crying out to our heavenly Father are certainly sweet.

Her duties include developing public relations strategies for local and national print and news media; cre-

ating partnerships and strategic alliances with corporate sponsors; and coordinating all fundraising for major events including the Annual Gala and Annual Meeting and Luncheon. She is also President and CEO of DC Global Meetings and Events and Deborah Cohen oversees all aspects of meeting and event planning including program development, marketing and promotion, budgeting, site selections, entertainment, food and travel arrangement, on-site management and post conference follow-up. played with the Kansas Philharmonic and noted musician Stan Kenton. She has served as Minister of Music for churches throughout the country and musician for the Laymen’s and Women’s auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., a organization she has been active in for over 35 years. She has received numerous awarding including 2009 Rising Star finalist MPI DFW Chapter; the prestigious 2008 Meeting Professional International Spirit Award; 2008 Elite News Woman of Excellence; and Meeting Professional to Watch in ’09 which was featured in the Convention South Magazine. She is a member of the National Coalition of Black Meeting Planners, Religious Conference Management Association, CMCA, Christian Meetings and Conventions Association LLC, National Association of Professional Women, Dallas Fort Worth Association of Executives, Meeting Professionals International DFW Chapter, YWCA Young Leaders Board and Secretary of the Galilee Griggs Memorial District Association of Baptist Churches.

stood by what was made, so that people are without excuse." Amen! Let us look at the moon. In 1960’s Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. This was a fantastic accomplishment. The Moon is our nearest neighbor, only 240,000 miles away. The Sun is 93 million miles away. Huge. Flames leap up thousands of miles at a time. If it were much further away we would all freeze to death. If were much closer we would all die from heat, or the polar ice would melt and the earth would have a huge flood and we would all drown. The closest star Alpha Centauri is 24 trillion miles away. It would take 120,000 years to travel there. There is design. Albert Einstein said "Everyone who is seriously interested in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the universe. It is a spirit vastly superior to man, and one in the face of which our modest powers must feel humble." Isaiah 40:26 says, "Look up at the sky! Who created the stars that you see? The one who leads them out like an army, He knows how many there are and calls them each one by name." Amen! And if God knows the names of 200 billion stars, he has not forgotten your name. What matters to you, matters to him. What concerns you, concerns him. What troubles you, troubles him. The Creator of the Universe is not too big, too removed, too powerful to know your name, to care for you, and to guide your life. The stars shout out "God cares. He is interested in people. He knows your name." He has written it across the sky. He has made himself visible. Bringing it closer to home perhaps the greatest visible evidence of God is when you gaze into the mirror. Of course, many people are born with handicaps and impediments, but there are still many signs of order, design, and pointers to a creator. Look at your heart it is not an accidental organ by chance evolution. It has been perfectly designed to pump 2,000 gallons of blood a day. George Gallup who is founder of Gallup poll and a famous statistician said, "I could prove God statistically; take the human body alone; the chance of all

the functions of the individual would just happen is a statistical monstrosity." Hebrews 1:1-2 says, "In the past God spoke to us many times and in various ways through prophets, but in these last days he has spoke to us through his Son." If you want evidence of God it is out there. If you want the clearest revelation of who God is, it is in the bible especially in the life of Jesus. That is why Jesus came to reveal God clearly and to show once and for all that we really matter to God. God did come to earth. He walked among us. We saw him, touched him, listened to him, and watched his miracles. While some believed; many did not. I think that we would be in the same situation today if Jesus came in the flesh today. Some would believe and many would not. They would still doubt and ask for more sensational signs. That is why I believe God reveals himself very clearly to people who are looking for Him, but does not force himself on others who do not want to see the evidence. He does not overwhelm people who are not interested. In fact, Jesus gives a special compliment to people who believe in him without demanding for extra signs and wonders. In John 20:29 Jesus said to Thomas, "You believe because you

have seen me. Blessed are those who have not seen me but believe." For those of you reading this message this week who want to know God and experience God in a real way, you can. Jeremiah 29:13 says, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." And you will discover more and more that God has revealed himself in many ways, it just depends on your focus in life. I hope your focus is to look for and seek after God which you cannot see.

GREGG A. SMITH’S “BACKYARD SPOTLIGHT”

Introducing Ta’Marah Esi

What do you get when you combine Jill Scott’s poetic soulful sound, Erykah Badu‘s funky maverick style, Lauren Hill’s fluid mastery of lyrics, Angie Stone’s vocal strength and technique with a touch of India Aires’ distinctive flava? You grasp the depth and sound of Ta’Marah Esi……the Entertainer, the Entrepreneur, the Woman! Inspired by the select sista’s and brotha’s in the music industry with multiple skills, such as, Betty Wright (Lyrical Authenticity), Bob Marley (Realist) , Tina Turner (Entertainer), and Rochelle Ferrell (Vocal Acrobat), only to name a few. Ta’Marah Esi was chosen from birth into a family of vocal instruments, her travels through the music industry allowed her to develop a style and sound that is all her own. Ta’Marah Esi began her pursuit in 1995, walking a path destined for success. She was given the much needed experience through hardship and successes with lessons well learned. She began her quest as a part of with four other women by the name of Aszja, which was later decreased to three then two - changing their name to Trumptyte with this new venture the duo had the pleasure of working with many professional artists in the music and theater arena, participating in events such as “Show Time At The Apollo”, West Virginia Beach Festivals, and many others. In time the Duo decreased to one “Ta’Marah Esi”, formerly known as Top

Cat, Ta’Marah later became one of the top 3 finalists in the W.G.C.I. (107.5 Chicagoland radio) Freshest M. C. contest. She was also chosen to compete in the Chicago Idol search competition out of over 4000 applicants. With the mindset and vision given to her to succeed Ta’Marah was determined never to stop until the vision of her Professional success was completed which placed her on the path as now a solo artist destined for great success. This experience has allowed her to develop into a position of great creativity, wholeness, adaptability and freedom. For most the name alone tells the story Ta’Marah: (Hebrew connotation) “Palm Tree”, (Ghana Africa’s connotation) “We are now complete”, and Esi: (Ghana Africa’s connotation) “Sunday’s Child” (Kabalarian Philosophy). Esi seeks travel, new opportunities and new challenges with an active nature that thrives on positive action, yet finds objectionable the rhythm that is monotony. The fact that Esi is very versatile and capable, and holds a great amount of vision allows her to formulate new ways of doing things. It makes her bold and unafraid to take risks to see the job done well. The essence of the name “Esi” formulates a walk that holds much self-confidence. Ta’Marah Esi serves as a bridge for the people, while assembling lyrics that food for the mind, body and soul.

NOTES FROM UNION HOPE “God calls for decision”

“God calls for decision” Det.30:1-10 was our church school lesson Sunday. Moses tells Israel of both the blessings and curses that the covenant contained. There is also a beaming light of mercy and grace shining through it all. God knowing that Israel Eld. Lloyd was going to be influT. Morgan enced by the nations around them to stray away from the commandments said when they did he would send them into captivity. He also assured them that if they turned back to him he would bring them back from wherever they were. He would make them more prospers than they had been before going into captivity. Because God is all knowing nothing slips up on him yet his love is strong enough not to give up on man. God wants to bless his people but often our actions towards him pre-

vent him from doing so. Obedience to God is more desirable by God that a praise-fest. Our morning message was delivered by our beloved pastor Eld.L.T.Morgan in titled “What do you give to the one that really has everything” Ps.50:7-15. Psalms 24:1 says “The earth is the Lords, and the fullness thereof; the world and they that dwell therein”. Since God already owns everything what could he possibly want from mankind? God wants from us thanksgiving, and to do the things we promised him we would do. Remember when there was a situation in your life or the life of a loved one and you promised the Lord if he would fix the situation you would serve him the rest of your life? God worked it out but you didn’t do what you promised him you would. God never ask for anything from us that He don’t have a blessing for us in return. Pay your vows and watch God change things. Be blessed

PASTOR CLARENCE HENDERSON ELITE NEWS COLUMNIST

This week I shall continue to examine scriptures that will shine more light on God’s Nature. 1 John1:5 tells us that “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. Because God is altogether Holy and righteous, His will Pastor Clarence for us can only be Henderson good. If we can be in the center of that will “goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives.” It is a good thing to know also, that when we enter into our Prayer Closet, or entering into another trial or test, that we are serving a God who is an always-present person. The Psalmist has said: “Whether shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there. If I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me” (Psalm 139:710).

getting our infrastructure in place. Roosevelt received three grants this year that received very little fanfare outside of our extended Mustang family. Velt received a $200,000.00 Restructuring & Redesign grant, a $70,000.00 transition grant for incoming 8th graders, and a $40,000.00 grant for 9th & 12th grade TAKS support. This summer marked the first time that Summer School was held at Velt for Velt Students only. As the final evaluation hasn't been done yet, I am pleased to announce that it was a tremendous success that should produce dividends as we move forward. We had 95 transitioning juniors that voluntarily took summer school to get ahead in Math. As you will find out, I can go on & on about the great things that we are doing at Franklin D. Roosevelt High school. I will close this announcement for now and will attach my year-end report that was created for our members and Dr. Shaver. Who was Melchizedek? Genesis 14:17-24 The whole story about Melchizedek got started because of the battle of the Kings. As you know these kings went up against Sodom and Gomorrah where Lot, Abraham’s brother’s son chose to reside when he and his uncle Abram parted company. When those kings came down upon Sodom and Gomorrah they defeated Sodom and Gomorrah and took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their Gene Turner way. These kings took Lot Out of the Eyes with them. Now, this was of a Layman Abram’s blood kin, his brother’s son. One of the men from Sodom managed to escape the battle of the kings and made it to where Abraham lived. Abraham lived in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner. These men were allies with Abram (Abraham). When Abram heard that Lot had been taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan (14:14) Abram defeated these kings at Hobah, which is on the north side of Damascus. When this battle was over Abram claimed all of the goods that these kings took from Sodom and

Gomorrah. He also brought back his brother’s son (Lot) and all of his goods that were taken along Melchizedek, King of Salem (which was renamed Jerusalem). These two names were interchangeable. Melchizedek brought bread and wine to Abram and allies for a feast, Melchizedek was not only the king of Salem (Jerusalem), but he was also a priest. Most people who are Bible readers know that only Christ is priest and king, so, many people believe that Melchizedek was a theophany. We also remember in I Samuel 13:8-12 where Saul as king also performed as a priest angered God when he took on priestly duties. Some Bible Scholars believed Melchizedek was a theophany because of this incident with Saul, and that there is no known record of his genealogy, his father, and other relatives. No one knew him or of him before now, but God knew him. Melchizedek was not a theophany in any manner; he was a symbol, a type of Christ, the same as Joseph. He was an actual king of Jerusalem or Salem, he was an actual man, but he was blessed by God to be a priest forever. The reason why I know Melchizedek was not a theophany, because God made Jesus the Christ a high priest forever, “After the order of Melchizedek. Some understands these verses in Hebrews to suggest that Melchizedek was a theophany, an appearance of Christ himself rather than a histor-

ical King of Salem. Neither the Hebrews nor the Genesis supports that view. The phase, “made like unto the son of God” and “after the order of Melchizedek” indicate a clear distinction between Melchizedek and Christ. The Genesis account provides sufficient historical data to disallow the idea that this is a temporary manifestation. This Melchizedek was a literal king of a literal city in Canaan. The setting of Genesis 14 is unlike any of the settings involving a thophany. In these settings the theophany is recognized as the Lord or is declared within the text to be the Lord. Further, to argue from etymology that since the name means “King of righteousness, “Melchizedek is not historical, lacks substance. Both historical and archaeological evidence demonstrate that the Jubusite Kings of that area used compound names including Zedek for their titles For example, Adom-Zedek was the Jubusite King of the same city several centuries later (Josh. 10:1) Even Abraham, the great patriarch of the Jewish people, con-

sidered Melchizedek enough superior that he paid tithe to him willingly and humble of his spoils. So, Levi and the entire Levitical priesthood, which proceeded from Abraham, are inferior to Melchizedek and his priesthood. If you noticed Salem, or Jerusalem was in Canaan, and that is where Ham’s baby boy Canaan settled and became the father of the Canaanites, therefore it is fitting to say that Melchizedek was really a Black person. That’s food for thought only. Melchizedek is certainly superior to Abraham’s offspring’s, simply because God himself ordained Melchizedek as a priest forever. Last order of thought, if Melchizedek had been Christ, then the Bible would have a flaw in it. Because the Bible simply states that Christ will come again as King which means that He will come twice. If Melchizedek was Christ that would make three times on earth. Let us not forget to read our Bibles, and may God bless you REAL GOOD, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

Prosecution Rests Defense Has 62 Hours THAT'S THE WAY THEY DO IT

Special Update by Sandra Crenshaw Upfront After a long exhausting two months of testimony, the prosecution rested Tuesday in US Government vs Don Hill et al, dubbed by local media as the largest public corruption trial in Dallas, Texas modern history of Dallas. Former Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Don Hill and his appointee former Planning and Zoning Commissioner D"Angelo Lee, Hill's wife and two local businessmen are accused of bribing and extorting two competing low income multi-family housing developers,Brian Potasnick and Bill Fischer. Ted Steinke, defense attorney for defendant Darren Reagan,CEO of BSEAT reported that Federal Judge Barbara Lynn, trying to get a verdict by November, has limited the defense to 62 hours of direct examination "collectively" and the prosecution will have an equal 62 hours to cross. A local news columnist accurately

PAGE 14

described the proceedings as "a new layer of slime that gets painted on each day," but he falls short in describing that after a base coat is applied by the defense and the mess dries, we may come closer to a more true color of the conduct alledged. Defending allegation after allegation, defense attorneys Ray Jackson, Victor Vital, and Douglass Green, argue "My Client has done no wrong, has not engaged in illegal activities, committed no federal crimes, "That's the Way they do it at City Hall. Don Sherman, FBI Special Agent, responds "No That's the way crooks do it." In his expert opinion when Don Hill and others cautioned each other not to talk on the phone, Sherman contends that they are engaging in criminal activity because if their conversations were about legtimate dealings, they would not be concerned. Local politicos remember when calling former deceased former

DART Board Member JB Jackson, who will be honored on September 12th for his contributions, that his standard response was "Let's talk about it eyeball to eyeball." Don Hill, a recognized civil rights activist, is heard in wiretapped conversations with housing developers, advocating that local businessmen,(named here as co-conspirators) be given a chance. "That's not illegal, Atty. Jackson argues, "That's what minority councilmembers do." No, Sherman testifies, that's what crooks do. They identify business people who will give them kickbacks. Defendants, Reagan, Lee, and Hill repeatedly tell the developers in their recorded conversations, you don't HAVE to use our guys, but you must use minority contractors in order to get the support of minority council members. Don Hill asks Developer Potashnick to hire a loyal campaign voluteer, not known at the time if and when the volun-

teer became his girlfriend. That's what crooks do, Sherman alledges, they laundeer money through other operatives. Don Hill supporters want to know "When did the adage "It's not what you know but who you know" cease to be the order of the day among politios. Wouldn't be no volunteers-- if they can't get references. Didn't former Dallas County Commissioner Roy Orr ask then newly elected Constable Joe Bagby to hire Orr's daughter as the chief clerk. A high ranking Married county official hired a known girlfriend as his chief administrative assistant. Where is the evidence that Don Hill's conduct was a federal crime, his attorneys ask? That's the way crooks do it, the FBI agent answers, they don't talk about it on the phone. You do know that it is the charge of the government to present evidence beyond a reasonable doubt in order to convict?, defense attorneys remind Sherman. The taped con-

Dallas Friends of Public Education Will Hold DISD Candidates to a Higher Level

Standing in front of DISD Administration Headquarters, a newly formed group of concerned voters announced that it is time for DISD Board members to “put students first.” “We are all about the kids’, said the group’s spokesperson, retired State Representative Harryette Ehrhardt. Our group is here to remind candidates for the board that the students and their needs must be at the heart of everything they do basic, and their needs, and that begins with board trustees providing basic, competent administration.” The DISD has been rocked by turmoil in recent years, including last year’s $84 million accounting “gaffe” which resulted in hundred of teacher layoffs, and an attempt by Trustees to illegally extend their own terms, canceling last May’s elections. The Texas Attorney General was forced to step in and overrule the Trustees, forcing this November’s board elections. Michael MacNaughton, owner of TexasWebDevelopers and whose son goes to a Magnet School said that if Dallas can’t be a world class city, without a world class school system.” Ehrhardt outlines the five issues that the group will focus on when vetting DISD Board candidates. • Fiscal Responsibility and Transparency-especially in the budgeting process • Respect for the Voters and Their Right to Vote • Basic Ethical Standards-school board members should not be allowed to profit from the district • Magnet Schools, Learning Centers and Comprehensive Schools should all receive adequate funding • Using Fair Standards to Evaluate Teacher and Student Achievement

The group will be evaluating candidates based on the criteris mentioned above and will be making endorsements based on their evaluations. “We will be holding candidates to a high standard. Labor Day means more than just a day off

By Allison Peeler It's all too common for our generation to look through our syllabi, quickly highlight and mark the dates accompanied by "No Class" and start daydreaming about the places and things we would like to do on those breaks. Whether you are cooking out, having fun at the lake, partying or simply wasting away in dreamland, you should know that there is indeed a greater reason that we break for Labor Day every year. Labor Day is not a religious holiday, a memorial to a certain person or a commercialized event designed by stores that want to take your money. The first Monday of September was designated to celebrate the American worker. Although the founder of Labor Day has been disputed, the most likely candidate is Matthew Maguire. Maguire, a machinist serving as secre-

M

tary of the Central Labor Union in New York, decided he was tired of the working man and woman being overlooked and under appreciated. He proposed a day to celebrate and show appreciation for their hard work and commitment to the prosperity of the country. The proposal included a street parade to exhibit the "strength and 'esprit de corps' of the trade and labor organizations" followed by a festival for the workers and their families to enjoy. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, the Central Labor Union held the first Labor Day celebration in New York and continued the tradition the next year. By 1884, the holiday was an annual observance in the city. Over time, the celebration evolved to include prominent leaders and union leaders striving to encourage workers to unite.

As union organizations around the country began demanding better conditions for workers, the idea of pushing for the observance of Labor Day quickly spread across the country. On Feb. 21, 1887, Oregon passed a law to establish Labor Day as an official holiday; many states soon followed its example. Despite the support and popularity of the holiday, it wasn't until June 28, 1894, that Congress declared the first Monday of each September a legal observance. No matter how you decide to celebrate this long weekend - at the beach, indoors, playing sports or studying - remember that it was the working class citizens of this country who afforded us this opportunity to do absolutely nothing. Their movements pushed to better the conditions of the work places and strove to secure respect and appreciation for those who work hard for the country's prosperity.
