Investments For The New Year Philippians1:1-11 1”Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, 1To all Henry Nelson the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseer and deacons: 2Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3Thanksgiving and Prayer 3I thank my God every time I remember you.4In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,6being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. 7It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.8God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,10so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of
Christ,11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.” wo old fellows were walking along the shoreline of a lake when a frog came hopping up to them. Creaking with age, one of the old-timers slowly bent down and scooped up the frog in his hands. As he stood there gazing at the frog, fascinated by its ugliness, the frog croaked, “Hey, mister! I am not really a frog. If you kiss me, I will turn into a beautiful princess who will do anything your heart desires.” Startled, the old man slipped the frog into his pocket and headed on down the shoreline. For a while the two continued on in silence. “Well?” his buddy finally blurted out. “You gonna kiss it?” “Naw, I guess not,” the first man replied. “At my age, I think I will have more fun with a talking frog.” Perhaps some of us are looking at this New Year of 2012 and thinking that we won’t take any risks or new challenges. We will play it safe, settle for what is sure. After all, we live in a world that is uncertain and fast changing. Let’s just wait and see what the future will bring rather than giving up what we already know.

Paul continued to pray for them. With joy he remembered them in prayer. Perhaps we need that reminder. It is wonderful to pray for someone to receive Christ, but once they do, we need to continue to pray for them. Having taken the first step in their life in Christ does not mean they have arrived. It means they have begun a journey and need prayer daily. And praying for other Christians is a joy! Christ will continue his work in us, but sometimes it is the prayers of others for us that keep us walking with Christ. We need others praying and thanking God for us. Regardless of where, or what circumstances people are in, whether going through hard times or rejoicing in God’s blessings, we have a common bond in Christ. Paul wrote, in 1st Corinthians 12:26 “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” Amen! Praying for one another strengthens all of us. Praying for one another binds us together in Christ. Invest yourself with thanksgiving in prayers for other believers. If you would like the entire message please request it at:
Yet some will start 2012 with good intentions of doing better than last year, and making some changes. The question is: What we expect this year, what investment we think for ourselves this year, what we invest for our family and our career this year? Paul’s letter to the Philippians was written while he was in prison. Yet even there he was still investing his life for his brethren in Philippi and continued praying for them. As we look at the first eleven verses of chapter 1, we see that Paul has invested himself in prayer. While he is not free to go to others, he is still praying for them. And his investment in prayer pays huge dividends. I. Pray With Thanksgiving Paul writes, “I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.” Amen! Paul keeps them in prayer, rejoicing in the fact that they received the good news of Christ and continue to live in it. He invested himself in their lives by sharing Christ with them, but he did not stop there.

Elite News Annual MLK Parade and Festival Making History for 26 years directly onto the grounds of the State Fair.
By: Bettye “Katt” Williams ELITE NEWS STAFF WRITER
I
f you didn’t get a chance to make it to last year’s Elite News Parade and Festival or any of the past 25 years of celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s life and legacy thru a parade and festival in the Fair Park, then you have missed a treat. You have missed beautiful floats, motorcycles, horses, all types of vehicles you can imagine, and people for days that line the streets on Martin Luther King Blvd in the sunny South Dallas. You missed the super star celebrities, your child bands, drill teams and your famous sports teams as well as your future Politicians for your area and state. Now, let me mentions you missed out on all the festivities that go on right after the parade and many are not aware of, which is Elite News Festival that is held on the State Fair grounds each year. The festival features concessions, vendors, health fair, career fair, children’s, kid zone, and informative information. You also missed out on all the entertainment like the Michael Jackson Impersonator Contest, Gospel, R & B, Rap Artist, and Poetry. This year we will have performances by Gospel Artist Mrs. Shirley Murdock. So I know you don’t want to miss out on all of that and much, much more on Monday, January 16, 2012 In case you do not know the history of Elite News Parade, it started nearly 26 years ago by our Founder and Senior Publisher, Dr. William Blair. He will tell you, “Once a task is begun, never leave it until it’s done. Be the task great or small, does it well or not at all.” About 26 years ago, each year gets better and larger than the year before. The founder and Senior Publisher, Dr. William “Bill” Blair who now is 90 years old is a former Negro Leagues baseball player who decided 61 years ago to exchange his uniform for a publisher’s pen and started The Elite News. He will start the Parade off with a VIP breakfast, (by invitation only), where Dr. Blair will serve as host. Afterwards, he will lead an entourage of ladies and gentlemen who have agreed to serve as Parade Marshals 1.6 miles down MLK Drive, past more than 275,000 spectators and vendors
S
This parade which is held always on the Monday in January for MLK, Jr. birthday was the 2nd largest MLK parade in the nation, with the community’s participation, last year put Elite News Annual MLK Parade on the map and is now the largest MLK Parade in the nation. Is it Time for the Church to Stand Up and be Counted? Part II
L
ast week we wrote an article pertaining to the Gene Turner Christians and the churches of God standing against the moral wrongeness which is occurring in our country, and in the world. God is Spirit, and he does not have arms, feet, hands, and physical being as we have, but God’s Spirit lives within us. That’s why when we sin, or when we wrong someone else our spiritual conscious claws at our throat, because we are sealed with the Holy Spirit which leads and guides us in all truth. Now, I grant you that we as Christians do not always adhere to the guiding of the Holy Spirit, because we will on most occasions let things get out of hand completely before we are moved to do or act upon it. That should not happen, because not only are we Christians, but we are also citizens with a free voice in a free society. We should be eager to up hold the laws and rules of the almighty God. The Bible makes it very plain, that we should obey God rather than man. Now, I know that God said obey all secular laws, because He himself is the author of all laws and regulations throughout the world in order to save us from ourselves, but laws sometimes got over execrated by lawmakers to exploit themselves, and that’s where the trouble starts. Look at what’s happening around us. Number one – public enemy number one: Same sex marriages. Number two: legal abortion (Women have the right to do with her body as she pleases). Neither one of these are moral standards of God. This country is supposed to be founded and based upon the principals of God. There are more Christians in America than in any other Country on the globe. If we wanted to do so we could make a change in many ungodly laws if we would just stand up and be counted as God’s servants against out right ungodlyness laws and rules in this country. Take number one for instance: Same sex
marriages this is absolutely against God’s law and creation. God created Adam and eve not Adam and Steve. God created man and woman. What makes this so bad is that it cancels out the first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve (replenish the Earth). Two men or two women cannot replenish anything but other homosexuals like them, because other people who are weak in that area will pattern after that lifestyle which are before them. Number two: Abortion is legalized murder of a child. How can any law governing body anywhere uphold a law of this kind of inhumane distraction? Her body does not belong to her. Life begins at concievement not the next few months, or not even the next day, because God himself has already created that particular life before He formed it in the seed of man. Saying all this Bro. Turner, what can Christians do? Well, you saw gays marching and filling the streets with signs. You saw just the other day that streets were filled with people protesting Abortion Laws. They want to kill babies legally in order to live without shame or responsibilities of having that child. Some of the same people who are protesting that law brought shame to their mother, but that mother lived with the shame rather than aborting her child because it was the right thing to do. We could create the largest lobbying committee in every state at the same time and lobby our statement and purpose and presence in every law governing office in the land. Simply because there are more Christians. There are more people that believe in God than there are none believers, plus people who are just good by nature that will be with us. These marches and lobbing committees would go over in a big way if national leaders would lead out front. People like Jessie Jackson, T.D. Jakes, Billy Graham, Jerry Farwell, William J. Shaw (NBC Inc.), Charles Stanley, Chuck Swindall, etc. If this would happen there would be no force that could stand up to it. God Himself would see to it, because this would give God feet, hands. and legs in this human society. Let us not forget to read our Bibles, and may God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care

he other day I got an email from one of the secretary from the church where I attend. She reminded me of several upcoming events that required my attention. It is so easy for us to get wrapped up in being Geraldine busy. Many times I Davidson-Hooker feel like there are not enough hours in the day for me to get my work done. Our society makes it seem that we’re not going to amount to anything or going to be successful unless we lead a busy life. While in seminary a requirement for my church administration diploma was to take a class called “Spiritual Formation.” In this class we had a project where we had to keep track of how we spent our time over the period of a week. We had to complete a chart of what we did during each hour of the day. Many of us were shocked at how much time we spent doing nothing and how little time we spent doing things that mattered. We wasted time playing video games, watching television, tweeting and updating our Facebook status. (Pardon me, personally, I don’t do social networking.) We didn’t invest enough time in things that mattered like reading our Bible, praying or quality time with those closest to us. So I dare you to keep track of your schedule for a week and evaluate how you spend your time. You’ll be blown away at how much time we waste and how our excuse of “I don’t have time to read the Bible” is laughable at best. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

H
ow deep is your hunger for God? Jesus stated a principle, which is valid in our prayer life. He said in Matthew chapter 5, “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled”. In Pastor Clarence this Beatitude we can Henderson clearly see that the chief reason that many lives are prayerless and hopeless is because there is no real desire in the soul for God. We need to understand that there are good desires and evil desires. Man is the storm center of a battle between good and evil, which has been going on through countless ages. When the concern’s of one’s mind and heart are on the side of evil, they tend to crowd out the desires for God and that which is right.

Notes From Union Hope
T
he Union H o p e c h u r c h family was blessed to see the New Year come in together in our watch meeting service. The church school Eld Lloyd T. Morgan lesson was “God watches over Joseph” Gen.39:7-21a. The lesson teaches that even when everything seems to be going wrong in our lives if we are children of God we can believe that God is up to something good. Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and finds himself confronted with a proposition from his owner’s wife. She tried to seduce Joseph but he refused and ran but while escaping she pulled his shirt off of him and screamed that Joseph had tried to rape her. When her husband came home she told him her story, her husband believed her and cast Joseph into prison, but the beauty and the encouraging word of the story was ““But the Lord was with Joseph. “
The Bible teaches that the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. Sometimes it look like living for God just doesn’t work out but many times through our trials God is trying to get us to the next level of blessing a place that we would not go on our own. Let me encourage you to let the Holy Spirit lead you. The Morning message was delivered by Pastor Lloyd Morgan from the subject “Reconciled to God through Christ Jesus” IICor.5:17-19. From the fall of man until the coming of Christ mankind and God was at odds with one another. Through many dispensations and covenants God showed man that did not have the ability to live a life that would place him in a right relationship with his God, but God in his infinite love became one of us and willingly laid down his life for us, thus making peace and all that believe in the finished work of Calvary can now call God their Father. Be Blessed I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

ince the introduction of Fantasy football to the American football fan, I think it created a big dilemma. There’s a great deal of teams and fans that can’t tell the difference, Leon Simon what’s real and what’s Memorex. Either way that season is finally over. And your Dallas Cowboys missed the play offs again. That’s not as big of a surprise as it uses to be. This team as a whole is about as void of talent as the dessert is of water. There are a few, very few talented guys on offence. You can’t say they need to re build, rebuild mean you had some talent. They need to build a team. You could possibly trade a few or a couple of guys on the defensive team. Under achieving De Marcus Ware and Maybe Jay Ratliff. And that’s it for the

I though Rob Ryan was a fake, and he could still be. But when you have Brady James and Keith Brookins in the middle. Terence Newman and Mike Jenkin outside at corner, a Gerald Sensabaugh, and Abram Elam at safety. How can any coordinator win? These Guys are amazingly inept. Can’t cover and can’t tackle, without those talents can’t play Defense in this game. In the game against the Giants, I saw so much closed eye tacking or should I say closed eye missing. And its definitely hard to recover a fumble with your eyes closed. Although I cut Rob Ryan a little slack, he’s not totally immune to criticism. Jerry Jones surely didn’t sign Olando Scandrich and Gerald Sensabaugh to contract extension without consulting with Ryan. That’s just not the way Jerry operates. On the offensive side, they need a running back that can play a whole game without getting winded or hurt every Sunday. I think the strength coach Mike Woick will cure some of those hamstring pulls that some of

these lazy guys come up with every 4 games. There should be a big time evaluation of some of these position coaches. All day Sunday the Cowboys seem to be confused and didn’t know where to line up. This was the 16 th game of the year. Either they are not teaching or these guys are not learning either way somebody needs to go. The no teaching coach or the stupid player. Sunday should have been their last game. This team make little league mistakes, running out of bound on kick-offs and be the first one to touch ball. STAY MENTALLY SHARP & FITBY STARTING A “HEALTH CLUB” FOR YOUR BRAIN BY: Mark Underwood SPECIAL TO ELITE NEWS
2
012 is upon us and many of us are thinking about what the New Year will bring. This time of year is an occasion to get us thinking about our health – specifically brain health. A Mark healthy lifestyle is easy to understand Underwood but not everyone realizes the more you work out your brain, the better you’ll be able to process and remember information. Carve out time to give your brain work outs. You can do that by creating your own “health club” that includes ongoing learning. Make a commitment to keep learning, no matter what your age or stage of life, and you are automatically improving your brain power. Learning curve College, high school and elementary school students all the way down to K-4 are continually engaged in stimulating learning experiences. These young students don’t have to work on brain fitness because for them, everyday learning is a habit. But that’s not true as we grow older. Think of the brain’s inner workings this way. Some of the circuits—conduits of information and memory slow down. As we decrease our need to keep the brain as fit as a student studying for college exams, the creation of new neural pathways diminishes. So what can you do to have a sharper brain? Plenty.
Brain fitness isn’t rocket science. Start by making a commitment to learning something new on a regular basis, weekly or daily and then add in other challenging ways to give your brain a regular boost of energy. A growing body of research actually also shows that people who commit to lifelong learning can lower their risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Jump start your brain power You may not realize it but your brain power has incredible potential when it is “sharpened” and kept fit. There’s no better time than now to invest in your brain’s fitness. As millions of people grow older, many experience age-related changes like forgetfulness or decreased concentration skills. Some people find they have difficulty sleeping and their short-term memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be. Did you know your short-term memory is like a scratch-pad for temporary recall of information being processed? In order to understand this sentence your brain needs to remember the beginning as you read move along toward the end and get to the period. About 70 million baby boomers are heading to retirement in the next few years. Many people join health clubs to stay fit and others exercise at home with family and friends. If you are heading to retirement, make sure you continue to exercise your brain. By learning something new you are breaking the way you think about topics and ideas. You are using brain pathways that may not have been used if you hadn’t ramped up your brain calisthenics.

Brain health tips—a ‘no-brainer’Here are some things you can do to keep your brain sharp and fit: Use your senses to learn. Know how you learn best, and then use it to your advantage. Some people learn best with audio tapes, others prefer videos or an in-person classroom. Stay Organized. Take notes. Use both words and pictures. Take advantage of calendars, date books and other organizational tools to help you concentrate while learning. Journal: Record information of your learning milestones by keeping a journal. Writing down your experiences helps build on previous knowledge and creates good retention. Participate in educational experiences. Take an adult education class or enroll in a technical college course. Take up a new hobby. People who enjoy life have found new outlets like quilting, woodworking and other hobbies. Take up a new sport. Have you thought about learning to ice skate, curl, play badminton, take up golfing or numerous other sports? Your local parks and recreation department probably has numerous opportunities for you along with other community resources. Play board games and puzzles. The more you play the better your mental dexterity will likely become. It’s time to stoke the fires of aging in the brain. Build your own “health club” which includes a variety of brain fitness activities. It’s never too late to learn something new and feed an aging brain.

African-Americans have a long history of activism in America, from fighting for the right to vote to pushing for integrated public spaces. Activists like Stokely Carmichael organized freedom rides, James Meredith fought to integrate blacks and whites at the University of Mississippi, and Rosa Parks instigated the Montgomery Bus Boycott. These protests were often legal and nonviolent, and made a powerful impact on civil rights in the U.S. With the help of activists like these—and many others—the country slowly worked to acknowledge the basic rights and contributions of African-Americans. Learn more about the many African-American activists who fought against the odds in order to achieve equality.

Fun For The Whole Family
elcome to the 1st weekend of 2012, Baaaby! Happy New Year!!!! I am soooo looking forward to this years MLK festivities and parade on Jan. 16th.
As I reflect on the years of a Black President in the U.S., I understand that the things that Dr. King fought for are still there to fight for...Barack Obama won the Lil Wayne Presidency, but I’ve never seen more underlying racism aimed at a President. Does it seem like whatever he wants to do, even if it makes sense, the Republicans try and squash it? Why try and tie and oil pipeline from Canada to Texas to pass an extension of the payroll tax cut bill? What does a pipeline have to do with my family getting an extra 40 buck every two weeks in our checks? That’s what the Republicans demanded. That is just silly...But that’s what the President has had to deal with and that’s simply an example! I was watching the Jamaican elections closely. The party that had been in power for the last 4 years was replaced by the party of the previous 18 years. Of course the the party that was ousted made tons of promises, but they’d not counted on dealing with George Bush’s banking/loan fallout. That was world wide mess. Don’t let the Republicans paint a fake picture of where our tough times have come from over the last 4 years, lol! They came from George Bush
and his Republican Party....Moving on,lol...Did you see Snoop Dogg win 72,000 for charity on “The Price Is Right”? Snoops win will be used to help fund is football league for inner city kids...Wobbledewobbity, are ya ready for Lil Wayne, sports commentator? His video series is called “Weezy’s Sports Corner is on the net, Google it! Big UPS to the Hip Hop Moms...Several Hip Hop moms got together to help raise money for cancer research recently at a St. Jude’s Hospital benefit event in Atlanta. Loraine Smith, Ne-Yo’s mama, Aliya “Mama Pain” Najm, the mother of TPain, and Jacida Carter, Lil Wayne’s mama, joined St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and created the Inaugural Soul Celebration! Finally from the “Now Take That File”:After a lengthy legal battle between a black South Carolina church and members of the Ku Klux Klan, a judge has ruled that the church owns a building where KKK robes and Snoop Dog T-shirts are sold.A circuit judge ruled New Beginnings Baptist is the rightful owner of the building that houses the “Redneck Shop”, which operates a so-called Klan museum and sells Klan robes and T-shirts emblazoned with racial slurs. Happy Birthday to YOU and Celebs this week:Cuba Gooding Jr. 43,Verne “Mini-Me” Shroyer 42 and Taye Diggs is 41.
