Restore Unto Me The Joy Of Thy Salvation
Henry Nelson
Psalms 51:12, 13 “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.”
S
o many today in churches all across America have lost their joy and are not ready to admit it has happened. The good news I bear is that joy can be restored. The word “restore” itself implies that it is something that the Psalmist once had and needed to recover. To “restore” can mean “to bring back into a normal or former condition.” When one restores an old automobile, it means the owner seeks to bring the automobile back as close as is possible, to what it was when it was new. Let us look at several things in regard to the restoration of joy. The Christian does not ask God to return his salvation, for he never lost it, but rather his request is for joy. The Christian who has lost his joy is a pitiful sight. Amen! The Repentant Response. Psalms 51:1-6 says, “ Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. {2} Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. {3} For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. {4} Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. {5} Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. {6} Behold, thou desirest truth in
the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.” Brags on the Lord. Psalms 51:1 says, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.” Amen! Confessed his sin. Psalms 51:1-4 says, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving-kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. {2} Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. {3} For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. {4} Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.” Amen! He was confronted with sin and came to himself. The Request For Restoration. Psalms 51:12 says, “Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.” Amen! No one ever recovers lost joy until there is a request for its return.” Amen! Note several things about this request. It is earnest. He meant business with God, crying out of desperation. It is expectant. He would never ask God to restore his joy if he did not believe that God would do it. It is expressive. The Psalmist knew his joy was gone. He did not deny the reality of his condition. It expresses what the Psalmist knew about his inner life. The Reasons For The Request. Why did the Psalmist ask the Lord to restore his joy? Sin and disobedience had run its course in David’s life through his sin with Bathsheba, who was the wife of Uriah the Hittite. Rebellion, adultery and murder

had caused tremendous problems in the life of the Psalmist. He was tired of sin and its consequences. Teaching what? One who has joy restored will teach transgressors the way of God. The result will be sinners getting saved. Psalms 51:13 says, “Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.” Amen! Have you experienced the joy of Salvation? Have you lost the joy of your Salvation? If you answered yes to either of these questions let me say that joy can be received through Jesus Christ, and joy can be restored through Him as well. Sin hardens. Hard hearted people are certainly not joyful people. Sin hinders. One loses his joy when there is unconfessed sin, because it grieves the Holy Ghost, who produces joy in the heart of every believer. Sin handicaps! It so cripples one’s life that he or she cannot think right, walk right, or feel right. The Results Of Restoration There are two major results in the context of our two text verses. The result will be saints teaching. Psalms 51:13 says, “Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.” Teaching what? One who has joy restored will teach transgressors the way of God. The result will be sinners getting saved. Psalms 51:13 “Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.” Amen! Have you experienced the joy of Salvation? Have you lost the joy of your Salvation? If you answered yes to either of these questions let me say that joy can be received through Jesus Christ, and joy can be restored through Him as well. Now you know how to restore your joy through salvation. Amen!

February is Black History Month year, not just the month of February.
By: Bettye “Katt” Williams Feb. 2012 - February of each year is Black History Month and honors the contributions of African-Americans throughout our nation’s past. Since 1976, every February, in the United States and in Canada, we pause to celebrate Black History Month. When Carter G. Woodson started Negro History Week in 1926, his purpose was for the history of African Americans to be considered a more significant part of American history as a whole and to educate Blacks about their cultural background, and to instill in them a sense of pride in their race. According to historian John Hope Franklin, Woodson “continued to express hope that Negro History Week would outlive its usefulness.” At church services and in school districts all over this city, state and country pictures of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, George Washington Carver, Leotyne Price, Mahalia Jackson, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Garrett Morgan, Dr. Charles Drew, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, Tiger Woods, Thurgood Marshall, and since 2008, President Barack Obama, just to name a few can be found hanging in church sanctuaries and on bulletin boards in classrooms. But it seems that once the month of February comes to an end, the posters, pictures and facts come down and we go back to business as usual. Some scholars argue that, “Black History Month has become a ready-made excuse to ignore African American history for the other 11 months of the year”, thus promoting racism. We must never forget Carter Woodson’s vision for the role he played in African American history. Some African Americans do have a tendency to ignore our history the other 11 months of the year. It’s as if February is the only time we are proud of our heritage and who we are. It’s not just one month out of every year, Americans should commemorate the achievements of black people throughout the
S
Woodson believed that we as a people would make a commitment to explore, learn and make history to the extent that it would be a part of our everyday life. Why can’t every day African Americans take in the knowledge in their homes and into their communities and make this world a better place in which to live. Great African Americans are being born every day; not just in February, and that being the case, we should remember to celebrate our heritage every day. American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week to commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent. The first celebration occurred on February 12, 1926. He believed that truth could not be denied and that reason would prevail over prejudice. His hopes to raise awareness of African Americans‘ contributions to civilization was realized when he and the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), conceived and announced Negro History Week in 1925. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for the celebration to coincide with the birthdays of

abolitionist/editor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month. Each year, U.S. presidents proclaim February as National African-American History Month. By the time of Woodson’s death in 1950, Negro History Week had become a central part of African American life and substantial progress had been made in bringing more Americans to appreciate the celebration. At mid–century, mayors of cities nationwide issued proclamations noting Negro History Week. The Black awakening of the 1960s dramatically expanded the consciousness of African Americans about the importance of black history, and the Civil Rights movement focused Americans of all color on the subject of the contributions of African Americans to our history and culture. The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the nation’s bicentennial. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the toooften neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” That year, fifty years after the first celebration, the association held the first African American History Month. By this time, the entire nation had

“Love, Peace, and Soul” Creator, Don Cornelius, Dies at 75 By: Bettye “Katt” Williams

f you are Old School, then you watched or danced to the TV show “Soul Train”. I know because I learned a few steps back in the day from that show. But most importantly, you know the voice who said at the end of every show “We wish you love, peace, and soul”, Mr. Don Cornelius, an American icon. Don Cornelius, the smooth-voiced television host who brought black music and culture into America’s living rooms when he created the dance show “Soul Train,” was found dead at his home in Los Angeles early Wednesday in what appeared to be a suicide, the authorities said. He was 75. Police officers responding to a report of a shooting found Mr. Cornelius’ body at 4 a.m. on the floor of his house on Mulholland Drive with a gunshot wound to the head. It appeared to have been self-inflicted, said Ed Winter, the Los Angeles County assistant chief coroner. Mr. Cornelius was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The police said they had ruled out murder and were talking to relatives about Mr. Cornelius’ mental state. Don Cornelius of Soul Train made a great contribution to American culture. It came directly from the African American community. It was more than a TV dance show; it was a source of pride and dignity for the African American community. There were hardly any venues at that time, especially on television that would give African American artists any exposure, including American Bandstand. American Bandstand was a dance show, but it basical-
ly concentrated on Caucasian people. They had a few black artists on from time to time. Soul Train was something that the African American community first embraced — and it’s always good to see African American people on TV — but then it spread to become a national and an international phenomenon. Soul Train not only became a community — something that gave the African American community a lot of pride — but it became a strong economic engine for the total music industry. Soul Train became so popular that artists like Elton John, David Bowie and the Bee Gees wanted to be the show. By that time it had gone far beyond the color barrier this country has embraced for so long. Soul Train, one of the longest-running syndicated shows in television history, played a critical role in spreading the music of black America to the world, offering wide exposure to musicians like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson in the 1970s and ’80s. “Soul Train created an outlet for black artists that never would have been if it hadn’t been for Don Cornelius,” said Kenny Gamble, who with his partner, Leon Huff, created the Philly soul sound and wrote the theme song for the show. It was a tremendous export from America to the world, that showed African-American life and the joy of music and dance, and it brought people together. Mr. Cornelius, a former disc jockey, created Soul Train in 1970 for the Chicago television station WCIU and served as its writer, producer and host. When it became a local sensation, he moved the show to Los Angeles and began broadcasting nationally in 1971, beginning a 35year run in syndication.
In its heyday, it was a formative experience every Saturday morning for young people of all backgrounds and afforded some of the most important soul and R&B acts their first national television exposure. It was also a platform for white rock musicians like Elton John and David Bowie to reach black audiences. Beyond music, Soul Train showcased dances and clothing styles then popular among young blacks. It laid the groundwork for dance programs like Fox’s “So you Think you Can Dance” and MTV’s “America’s Best

But tormented by thirst, they continued to argue with Moses. “Why did you bring us out of Egypt ? Are you trying to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?” Exodus 17:3 NLT After coming this far, do you really think the Lord is going to let you down now?
F
irst of all; what is stewardship? Stewardship means that one has been put over the operation of another persons holding, or possessions. Not only to be in charge, but to build or produce more than was turned over to him. In John 9:4 Jesus tells of his own personal purpose and what He must do, but more than that He gives us direction of what we should be about who will be with Him in the Kingdom. This is a declaration, which identifies work of the Christian and its purpose. We are all called by God to do a certain work within Kingdom building, but we must recognize that calling and respond to it by working the works of Him who sends us out. The next part of this statement: “ While it is day,” suggests to us that there are restrictions as to the time we have to do this work. When we look at the word “Day”: speaking in the context it means opportunity. you see, we only have the opportunity to do a lot of things during daylight hours, seeing without obstructions. Daylight hours only last for a certain time during a 24-hour period, so, it is important that we work diligently while the sun is up in order that we might be able to see what we are doing. you see when things are going well with us, we must not forget that things will not always be well, there will be some dark hours, so, we should do all we can while we are able to do them. you know, we are always tempted to forget what comes after a sunny “Day”. We forget that the sun will not always be high in the sky and always shining. Once the day is gone it cannot be recalled again, so, we must work as much as we can that

Day. Our lives will not go on forever, so we must work His will while we have the opportunity to work His works. Too many good deeds go undone, many kind words go unsaid, too many great potentials go untested, and simply because of opportunities we failed to capitalize on. Many of us misuse our sunlight. We simply waste sunlight being idle. Today will never be again, it cannot be recalled, so we must work while it is “Day”: Jesus makes this statement so as to bring about a sense of urgency to our minds, it was meant to be a challenge to us that we might understand the importance of doing the best we can while we can. Our potential to serve depends upon the willingness to take advantage of opportunities. We as Laymen in the church should work to save our young men while we have the opportunity to do so. you know what most of us think? We think working in the church is the work we should be doing. yes, we should work in the church, but let us not get it mixed up with the work of the church. you hear people say things like, “ sing for the Lord child”, She/he should not be singing for the Lord, the Lord does not need your singing, and He needs your willingness to work his works. Whatever we do in the church or on the church grounds should be for praise only. When we give praise to God on Sunday morning, because that’s the only time some of us go anyway – that’s what we should do to let God know that we appreciate what He has already done for us as an individual. That’s not working for God that’s praising God. When you help someone who cannot help him or herself or when you lead others to Christ, then we are working while it is “Day”. When night cometh no man can work. Night means Days end. It’s going to come no matter what happens. Our day will end some dark night, so, let’s work while it is “Day”! Let us not forget to read our Bibles. May God bless you real good, and may He ever keep you in His loving care.

no Room for Lack
H
ave you ever known someone who had a poverty mentality? you can usually tell by the words he or she speaks. It is an attitude that never expects anything above and beyond its current reality. People with a poverty mind-set are content and satisfied Geraldine with lack and insuffiDavidson-Hooker ciency, even when it is clearly destroying their lives. Their surroundings, attitude, words, and decisions reflect a way of thinking that does not trust God for provision. As a result, they continue to experience poverty in many areas of their lives. Poverty involves lack, and it is not limited to the financial realm. Anytime we are lacking something in an area of our lives, poverty is present. A person can be poor where his or her relationships are concerned, or even mentally and emotionally. If people are lacking good health, they are poor where their physical condition is concerned. you see, poverty is designed to affect and infect all aspects of the human experience, which is why the enemy wants to keep people in the dark about what God has made available to them through His Word. When lack and poverty govern the way we think, our outer circumstances will reflect that inward state of being, and we will make choices that only push us further into poverty. Third John 2 says that as our spirit and soul are prospering, our physical condition will prosper as well. The key to a life of prosperity is to develop an inner image of it, which only comes by way of the Word of God. When we take the Word and meditate on it constantly, it becomes rooted in our spirits, and the result is a changed mind-set. When the Word is the absolute governing force in our lives, the abundant life will be seen in our outward circumstances. There will be no doubt in anyone’s mind that we are living the blessed life. God’s desire for us to prosper and not be in lack is not just so we can live the good life. He wants us to be so filled and overflowing with abundant life that we have a surplus of blessings to bestow upon others. Whether it is financial and material resources, wisdom, love, healing, or deliverance, we can impact others more effectively when our lives are free from poverty. Take some time to examine your life and locate areas where poverty has gotten a foothold. Change your thinking by renewing your mind with God’s Word. As your thinking changes, your feelings, decisions, and actions will follow suit. As your soul prospers, so will your life!

Notes From Union Hope
T
he church school lesson was “Out of Egypt” Ex.115:1-3,19,2226, was the accounting of Israel being delivered out of bondage after the Eld Lloyd T. Morgan 400 years that God revealed to Abraham concerning his seed. This lesson was a confidence builder for anyone who have ever been in trouble and thought God was taking too long to answer their prayer. As we saw in the life of many of the Old Testament Patriots that sometimes the Lord works slow but he works good. In the final verse of the lesson we see God setting forth his conditions for his blessings. Israel like many wants a miracle without obedience to God. But throughout the Bible it is clearly seen that God is more concerned about obedience to his word that anything else. The Message of the morning was delivered by Pastor Morgan from the subject “Living a
Joyous Christian life” Ecc.2:2426.Solomon makes it clear that not only were blessings from God, but even the enjoyment of the blessings were God’s gift to us. He considered it “evil” if a person had all the blessings of life from God but could not enjoy them. It is easy to see why the Jewish people read Ecclesiastes at the Feast of Tabernacles, for Tabernacles is their great time of thanksgiving and rejoicing for God’s abundant provision of their needs. The important thing is that we seek to please the Lord and trust Him to meet every need. God wants to give us wisdom, knowledge, and joy; these three gifts enable us to appreciate God’s blessings and take pleasure in them. It is not enough to possess “things”; we must also possess the kind of character that enables us to use “things” wisely and enjoy them properly. Apart from God, there can be no true enjoyment of blessings or enrichment of life. It is good to have the things that money can buy, provided you don’t lose the things that money can’t buy. Be Blessed

Such peace that encourages you to P.U.S.H. (“Pray until Something Happens”). Realizing that we have some help with the Holy Spirit, which is our intercessor. The Apostle Paul suggested that the Spirit also helpth our infirmities; For we know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the spirit himself maketh intersession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26. Verse 27 says “He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what the mind of the spirit is”. I suggest that it is better to have a heart and no words, than to have words and no heart.

he script is set, Super Bowl XLVI will soon be a reality. If it’s as great as the many story lines it presents it’ll be an exceptional game. Story lines as I said are plentiLeon Simon ful, will Brady and Belichick be the coach quarterback combination to win the most Super Bowl. Terry Bradshaw, Chuck Knowles three, Joe Montana, Bill Walsh three. That seems more appropriate than will Tom Brady be the greatest quarterback ever. A title we try to give everyone that achieves anything. If the New york Giants win, will Tom Coughlin have Bill Belichick number in the big games. Are these two coaches the Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi of this generation. Those are a few of the storylines that will draw a lot of attention. Some, if not all are about as relevant as Barry Switzer use to say “ a molecule in the universe”. If things go as I expect Tom Brady will probably try

and establish a running game to keep the Giants from using their NASCAR package. The NASCAR formation is the four down linemen are all defensive end. Bringing a lot of speed inside and out. Tom Brady doesn’t throw as well with trash around his feet as he use to. Trash is an NFL term for player on the ground. That’s a problem most quarterbacks have that’s had lower body injuries ankle’s, Knee’s etc. By the Giants choosing to use speed you sacrifice size thus the Patriot could get a running game going. That, would be under normal conditions a way to succeed against a team like the Giants. If they’re successful running, and the Giants have to bring anther body in the box, then Brady can find those huge Tightends and he can find little Wes Welker in the slot. That’s basically the same game plan for the Giants, but that type offense is more in the Giants DNA. That’s the giants game plan regardless the opponent. The Patriots, although they run a three man front their defense is much more capable of stopping the run with the much larger down linemen. That opinion is not shared by a lot of people. If these plans a thwarted by either team now you have to go to the quarterback. I think Eli Manning is more capable of improvisation than Tom Brady, because one

he’s bigger and stronger, and he’s never been seriously injured. Tom on the other hand play more according to a script or what develops before the snap.( defensive formation) Also the Giants as before mentioned are design to whip quarterbacks. In the modern era these are as good a coaching staffs as there are in the league. If there’s an edge, I’ll give that to Bill Belichick. I don’t think New England will make the stupid mistakes that the Giants and the Dallas Cowboys have on many occasions made. Since I’m an NFC east guy I’ll pick the Giants. Plus I hope I’m wrong but I think Brady is showing a little fear could be injuries

Black History Month come to recognize the importance of Black history in the drama of the American story. Since then each American president has issued African American History Month proclamations. And the association—now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)—continues to promote the study of Black history all year. The U.S. Census Bureau released data Wednesday indicating 13.6 percent of Americans identify as African-American. The report — released on the first day of Black History Month — indicated the nation’s black population, as recorded in the 2010 census, is 42 million. There are 2.4 million black military veterans. Eighteen percent (18%) of blacks 25 or older have a bachelor’s degree or higher; and 2.9 million currently attend college, an increase of 1.7 million since 1990. The report said 44.2 percent of households with a black homeowner live in owner-occupied homes. The total receipts of black-owned businesses, as of 2007, were $135.7 billion, up 53.1 percent from 2002. This year’s theme “Black Women in American Culture and History” honors African American women and the myriad of roles they played in the shaping of our nation. The theme, chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History urges all Americans to study and reflect on the value of their contribution to the nation. Maya Angelou, an American activist hopes that there will come a time when this celebration will no longer be necessary to explain the contribution of the AfricanAmericans. We as a African American people should not only celebrate Black History Month for one month but celebrate and teach our children about our heritage and our history throughout the year, and apply it to our everyday lives and live and behave like the Kings and Queens God created us to be! http://www.floridablackhistory.com/facts.cfm http://www.census.gov

Don Cornelius Dies.........continued from page 4 Dance Crew.” Born on Chicago’s South Side on September 27, 1936, Mr. Cornelius had an early craving to go into broadcasting. He graduated from DuSable High School in 1954, did a stint in the Marine Corps and then returned to Chicago to marry a childhood sweetheart, Delores Harrison. They had two sons, Anthony and Raymond, who are among his survivors. In 1966, he gave up a career selling insurance and cars to take a three-month broadcast course, despite having young children to feed. With his deep baritone, he landed a job as a substitute disc jockey at WVON in Chicago and later as a sports anchor on the television program “A Black’s View of the News.” He produced the Soul Train pilot with $400 of his own money, taking the title from a road show he had created for local high schools. “Soul Train was developed as a radio show on television”, Mr. Cornelius told The New york Times in 1995. “It was the radio show that I always wanted and never had. I selected the music, and still do, by simply seeing what had chart success.” He said the show was originally patterned on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand,” but with a focus on black music, fashion and dance. “There was not programming that targeted any particular ethnicity,” he told The Associated Press in 2006. “I’m trying to use euphemisms here; trying to avoid saying there was no
television for black folks, which they knew was for them.”

Welcome to the weekend, Baby! The week was really going well, when shortly before my deadline, I got the news that Don Cornelius was dead, at 75. Then I discovered that he’d shot himself...That lead me to
many questions about the man who we invited into our homes as kids... Being a native Chicagoan, I saw Soul Train before it went national on our local UHF Channel 26 Don Cornelius WCIU. I remember that hot little non-air conditioned studio that gave birth to one of the quintessential shows of a generation...It was “OUR” American Bandstand. That 1st show back in 1970 was all about Chicago, with “local” artists The Emotions, Chi-Lites and Jerry Butler! I wanted to see the older Don, so I went to youtube... If you visit my Facebook page(Search and friend me under Kevan Browning), you will see an interview Don did with another Chicago legend Herb Kent, “The Cool Gent”...The thing that stood out to me in watching Don’s later year interviews, is that he seemed depressed, joyless...I won’t go over his life story, you can read that on the net, but I must say he deserved a better end. Who will ever forget...”And you can bet your money, it’s all gonna be a stone gas, honey! I’m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!” R.I.P. Don Cornelius and thanks for blessing us with your style, substance and dream! Big ups to BET for banning Nikki Minaj’s, “Stupid Hoe” video... Besides stealing the beat from lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss” song, lots of little kids peep these videos...Low class, just get’s lower and lower and lower...Good luck to DeAngelo whose trying to make a comeback after 10 years outta the spotlight...
DeAngelo fell from an Amsterdam stage before his performance this week and is recovering hopefully away from thse Amsterdam cafe’s...Prayers for Paul Anthony of the R&B/Hip Hop group Full Force...Paul the most buffed of the group is battling cancer. On a brighter note, 1st later Michelle Obama is taking heat for reportedly going on a 50,000 Lingerie shopping Spree in New york. My thought? keep the President happy and shake the haters off, lol! By the way, The Dow Jones stock market had it’s biggest January in the last 10, count ‘em TEN years! Congrat’s President Obama! When we look at our 401K’s, 403B’s and other assorted retirement accounts, we want to see BLACK and not r-e-d! Move over Real housewives of wherever,lol...The TLC Network has plans for a new series called “1st Ladies”...They are starting with the wives of some prominent Atlanta G a . preachers...Word is that neither Bishop Eddie Long’s wife , nor Prophetess Juanita Bynum will be in the mix....Finally, I’m looking forward DeAngelo to Super Bowl 46 this Sunday. Despite a few invitations, I’ll be stretched out in front of my own TV after Church! Hopefully DFW resident/American Idol star Kelly Clarkson hits all the right notes on The National Anthem and Madonna has no wardrobe malfunctions during her halftime show...The matchup between the Ny Giants and New England Patriots may even live up to the excellent TV commercials..Let’s hope so! Happy Birthday to yOU and Celeb’s this week: Ernie Banks is 81, Sherman Hemsley is 74, Nolan Ryan is 65,Oprah is 58, Lawrence Taylor is 53, Oscar Delahoya 39 and Cosby Show Kid, Brandon “BUG” Hall is 27!
