This past week, one of the giants of the Civil Rights movement, Reverend Peter Johnson, stood strong in the pulpit of the Goodwill Baptist Church and told stories about how God had sent him and others like Dr. Martin Luther King and Pastor S. M. Wright, to change the very face of America. And change it they did. Many of those Civil Rights heroes are no longer with us, but God has seen fit to keep Reverend Johnson amongst us so that he can continue to inspire us and give us messages of love, hope and peace. The people or Goodwill Baptist were treated to wonderful preaching Sunday, January 29,2012. They could not contain themselves as Pastor Johnson allowed the Holy Spirit to flow from his heart and capture the hearts of everyone within the sound of his voice. Reverend Johnson met Dr. King when he was twelve years old and he has been carrying the blood stain banner ever since. He preached about the importance of eating the right foods and about growing them currently. He spoke to the people of the church about the concept of community gardens, encourag-

ing them to grow their own crops because they simply cannot trust much of what they purchase in the supermarkets. Pastor Johnson told the people that Dr. King would want them to be healthy and that they would have to take steps themselves if they wanted to add years to their lives. The lessons that Dr. King and others taught him when he was a young man are still evident in his heart. He is still a servant of God, still willing to risk it all for the Kingdom and for the children of the Kingdom.

Celebrating 52 years of Community Service Spiritual Guide

Memorial Services for LOTTA O. EXCUSES Recently our church held a Ministry Leaders’ Retreat

followed by a forum to motivate non- volunteers to volunteer for service to their local church, based on their spiritual gifts. How do you motivate church volunteers? Are we "burning out" our best people? What can we do to motivate the pew- sitters? How do you dismiss the long list of excuses members gives for not volunteering? I wrote a mocked epitaph to lie to rest excuses members gives. Today, we celebrate the demise of Lotta Excuses. Lotta was born to the parentage of Adam and Eve, the beginning of the Excuse Tribe in the Garden of Eden, many, many, years ago. The eldest of a multitude of siblings, Lotta was very well versed and educated. She was blessed the gift to be a devoted servant. She was exceptional, intelligent and bright. A philanthropist whose presence in mankind’s lives could have been very rewarding and deeply appreciated. Lotta had so much to offer. Affectionately known as, “I Don’t Have Time, Let Somebody Else Do It,” by all that knew and loved her, she often found reasons to pass responsibilities on to others. Lotta was charitable, beautiful, smart, engaging and kind. Occasionally, she would greet strangers with gracious dignity and warmth. At times, she was a trusted advisor, confidante, and prayer warrior, yet she was satisfied sitting in the church pews. Lotta Excuses passed away peacefully on Saturday Night, October 29, 2011, with relatives and family by her side. Lotta is survived by: Fuller Excuses, Moore Excuses, Minnie Excuses, Bunch O. Excuses, Feeble Excuse, Over Used Excuse, Excuse After Excuse, twins Itsa Tu Early and Itsa Tu Late Excuse, Ida Hava Job Excuse, I.M. Tired Excuse, and fraternal twins, Ben Ther and Don Tha Excuse. Apathetic, Unconcerned, Slothful, Lazy, Lethargic, and Non Committal were also in attendance. Lotta Excuses will be remembered by her associates: Ira Fuse, Myra Grets, Maybee Tamara, Noah Willnot, Justin Case, R.U. Kiddin, Mae B. Later, Lloyd Knota Chance, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Spiritual gifts are to be used out of love for God and for others, and in service for God and to others. Volunteering is not just about helping others. What you’ll find out when you volunteer is that serving others is also the best way to grow in your relationship with God.

February 10, 2012

Dear Dr. Hollie,I have this friend who goes through more ups and do wns in her marriage than maybe the average person. When she is having problems with her husband, she talks to me about them and she calls her husband all kinds of names and she makes him sound so bad that it would make any outsider wonder why they’re even together. However, I know better, and I know that with all their issues, these two people love each other greatly. But, here is my issue, while I sit and listen to her marriage woes, I am very careful not to agree with the negative things she says about him, while at the same time, trying to be on her side. The way that this backfires on me is that when she’s back in love with her husband, then she starts to remember our conversations differently than what actually happened.

Prayer Closet When they’re happy, she turns it around like I was the one saying all the crazy things about her husband. I don’t know if she really believes this in her head or not, but it upsets me and I want to scream at her that “no, you were the one who said he was a lying, cheating so and so.” The only reason that I haven’t done this already is that I don’t want to bring her back down into that state of misery she goes into when they’re fighting. Do you have any kind of advice on how to make this situation easier on me? I Didn’t Do It

Dear I Didn’t, Next time your friend starts complaining, tell her that you are only a listening ear and that is all you intend to be. Then, let her know how she turns on you when all is well. Limited input is good advice when dealing with married couples and besides you must remember you are only hearing one side of the story. As you see in this situation that even that side is subject to change depending on her emotional state. Consider yourself very fortunate that she has not shared your conversations with her husband and made you the villain. I know you want to be there for your friend but being there also means being a good listener. Dr. Hollie is a local psychotherapist & pastor, and for your questions and comments to appear in this column, you can email askdrhollie@aol.com

Here we are again; we have closed out another year and opened another new year. Well, where do we go from here? The New Year will bring new challenges and questions, such as, “What do we do when we don’t know what to do? Where do we go when we don’t know where to go?” From year to year we change the things we do and places we go. However, let us consider the suggestion that Jesus “Men ought to always pray and not faint.” (Luke 18-1) Out of all we do and places we go, let us continue to be faithful to our prayer closet, for it is there where the sinner meets the Savior and the sick meets the healer. Don’t stop praying! Prayer changes things and conditions us for the things that don’t change.

Notes From Union Hope The Church school lesson was “Justified by faith in Christ” Gal.2:15-21.The Lesson brought to mind again the fact that we are justified by faith in Christ Jesus and not by the works we have done or can do. To be justified is the act of pronouncing righteous, justification, acquittal, not innocence. Many times we like the Jew’s feel that we can by doing something good, or practicing some religious ritual that we can by that be justified before God, but humanity’s only hope for justification and peace with God is through Christ Jesus. If justification came by works of righteousness how would you know when you had done enough to purchase it? Our only hope is faith in the finished work at Calvary. The subject of the morning message was “The Cords of the cross” Matt 27:39-43 delivered by Pastor Morgan. It centered around the question “what made Jesus stay on the cross when he said he could ask his Father and he would send Twelve Legions of Angels” a legion was 3000 to 6000 Roman soldiers, twelve legions would have been (you do the math)that many angels could certainly free him, what then held him there? 1Peter 2:24 from (the message) says “He used his servant body to carry our sins to the Cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way. His wounds became your healing. When we consider the price paid for our salvation we should be struck with amazement and humbled by the fact it was for us. I cannot comprehend how a person could love such unlovable people as we were, to the point of laying down his life for them. Paul in his great writing on this subject in Rom 5:6 shed great light on the unselfishness that was displayed at Calvary. He says;”For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” All I can say is THANK GOD FOR JESUS” Be Blessed

Barber Shop Talk With Leon Simon The Hall of fame selections has been made, I never have a problem with the guys they induct. More often than not , I have problems with the one’s that are not selected. This year I have no idea how Chris Doleman as a pass rushing Defensive end with no championship ring, go in the Hall ahead of Charles Haley. Charles has 5. I believe the Hall of Fame should have two different sections. Before petticoats’ and After petticoats. Had New England won the game, would Tom Brady, with 4 super-Bowl rings be considered best Quarter backs ever. Or at least in the league with Joe Montana. And Terry Bradshaw. I think Tom should be given consideration to be in the top after Petticoats. The pass rushers in the before the petticoat era were free to try to decapitate the Quarterbacks. Grand Prairie’s own Joe “ Turkey” Jones picked Terry Bradshaw up and dumped him on his head like a garbage can. Those pass rusher target area was from the numbers up. Lawrence Taylor said he was taught to put his face mask on the numbers and work your way up. Hitting like that would get you in the Pro-bowl and Hall of Fame. Today it’ll get you a large fine and probably locked up. Half of the defensive Hall of Fame got there by trying to force Quarterbacks head into the stadium floor. And these guys had to get up and call a play. Today or after petticoat these guys get plays call for them, plus the hitting area for these guys resemble the base ball strike zone. Above the knee’s and below the letters. Knowing these rule changes, supposedly are for the health of the players, and could be necessary. Never the less these rules make it impossible to judge the players of today with the before petticoat players of the past. As recently as Troy Aikman, I’ve seen the likes of Philadelphia ‘s Clyde Simmons, The late Jerome Brown and Reggie White. Hit Quarterbacks so hard the knock mouth piece and Helmet off . One of the most famous pictures in NFL history show Y.A. Tittle walking of the field with helmet in hand an blood coming from his head. If that happen in 2012 and the quarterback is Aaron Rodgers ,Tom Brady, or any of the top Quarterbacks, somebody would go to jail. The other positions today are so fragile these guys on offense can’t stay on the field over 3 plays in a row an they take themselves out of the game to get oxygen. How can you use the same criteria to judge other generation. As I said I don’t have a problem with the guys going in, just don’t call them the greatest ever. Quarterback play in the NFL is getting real close to no contact 7on 7 drills. If Joe Montana , Dan Marino, Roger Stauback, etc. could throw 40 plus times as is common today. Somebody would have 80 points put on them

Celebrating 52 Years of Community Service Blacks Must Sacrifice To Pay the Costs to Compete Competitiveness is more than a buzz work. It is fast becoming the challenge to American leadership issued by many of the nation’s top corporate heads. It should also be a major challenge to those community leaders who are groping for ways to face the future. The willingness of the Japanese to work hard and pay the cost to be able to compete is the key to their success, Chrysler’s Lee Iacocca and Ford’s Donald Peterson both noted at a recent governor’s meeting in Michigan. A Japanese businessman added that “Americans don’t like to work hard, and therefore, are lacking in the ability to compete.” A questionable generalization, perhaps, but many believe the assessment is painfully accurate. The Chrysler chief suggests that American’s lack the will to compete. We’ve got the natural resources, we’ve got the technology, and we’ve got the human talent to compete with anybody. What we seem to be lacking is the will to compete. And I’m not just talking about the individual will here…but the guy who wants to featherbed on the job or stay home on Mondays. I’m talking about the national will…about national policies designed to help America compete. As an example of Japanese and American resourcefulness Iacocca said: America still has the best graduate schools in the world. Harvard, Stanford and MIT are mecca’s for the brightest students from Japan, Korea, and everywhere else. They come over, study hard, and then go home and beat our brains out. But across town in our own high schools, we have students who can’t read, can’t write, can’t count, and…you can bet on it…can’t compete. Japanese youth, on the other hand, place greater importance on education and preparedness by attending school longer and studying such difficult subjects as math and physics as early as pre-school or pre-adolescence, he said. Additionally, they take other skills required for a high tech future, and at this early age are also taught how to compete. “They even take test to determine what kindergarten they go to.” If our young people, many of them already resigned to a bleak future, are going in the world of constant technological change, they must be sufficiently prepared. Perhaps more important, everyone must be ready to pay the inevitable costs. Greatest of all, however, is the need for proper leadership and direction. Short and long term planning are mandatory, for the will to prepare oneself to compete is urgent. And that’s a challenge for anyone.
