Just the other day I received news from a young man in Dallas, Mark Jones, who over the years has become very close to me and my family, that he has lost his father, Robert, to an illness.

Mark, an industrious and highly moral young man, has been close to me and my family for nearly three decades. He is somewhat like a son to me. He and my son, Randy, who just left us, were often inseparable.

I could feel the bereavement in Mark’s voice as he told me of his father’s passing, only days after we had loss his friend and my son. I comforted him as best I could and urged him to continue the good works that had made his father so proud of him.

As I think of Mark’s father, Robert, and any Jordan, I am reminded of the old school preachers who often spoke about there being a slight line before life and death. They talked about how we must live each day that we had on earth as if it were our last because we did not know the hour nor the time when the final curtain would fall from heaven.

During the many years that I have lived, I have come to witness the fragility of life, its briefness and its sudden conclusions. That is why I try my best not to harbor any hatred nor ill will towards anyone else. The time that we have here is so brief to do otherwise.

I urge all of you who read my column to embrace one another, even if there are difficulties that stand between you and others that appear like mountains. One day, they, too, will melt away and we will be face to face with one another.

Life is too short to be bitter or to hold hatreds. It is simply not worth the living. So, Mark, continue on and make your father proud just as you have done for the many years that he was blessed to call you his son.

Those who know Texas State Representative Helen Giddings well say that one of her greatest attributes is placing the achievements of others before the numerous personal accomplishments that she has made in her own life.

Rep. Giddings, whose accomplishments are known from DeSoto, Texas to Durban, South Africa, has recently turned the spotlight on District 109, which she represents, in search for community residents who have made exceptional contributions to others, and who make the district a better place in which to live for all of its residents.

“So many people in this city give of themselves and their resources, yet they ask for nothing in return. We believe that their efforts should be recognized and applauded,” said Rep. Giddings who is recognized nationally as one of the most effective state legislators in the country.

District 109 residents are being asked to nominate people who have made special contributions and who are viewed as role models for others.

“The individuals can be professionals, non-professionals, teachers, students and others,” said Rep. Giddings. “There is no age requirement and anyone who has impacted the community in a beneficial manner is eligible for nomination. The nominated individuals will be recognized in our monthly newsletter and will also be honored at the State of the District Annual Luncheon.

Rep. Giddings said that this would be the first year for the ‘connecting with the community’ awards program in her district.

“No good deed is too big or too small as long as it

makes a positive impact,” she said. “These awards will help highlight the outstanding individuals in o u r c o m m u n i t y, a n d hopefully will provide encouragement for others to make substantive contributions.”

A golf tournament is being planned for the fall to raise funds to underwrite the program.

“We are all very excited about supporting Rep. Giddings, her staff and those who will be recognized through the program,” said Clem Maddox, a Time Warner executive who is one of the committee’s co-chairs.

Ask Dr. Hollie Dear Dr. Hollie: I have a five-year-old granddaughter.

She is truly a blessing. She is wellbehaved at home. However, when she goes to daycare she acts totally different. It usually happens around nap time (12pm) or later. She sometimes refuses to lie down and be quiet during nap time. She will get up after her teacher has told her not to and skip around the room hitting the other children's cots and making a lot of noise, sometimes waking them up. She hits other students and sometimes the teacher. She will whine and make baby noises. When she comes home after she has acted badly at daycare, she will have her head down. I will talk to her about her day and in a low voice she will slowly tell me what she did at daycare. I will sometimes ask her why, does she know how to act well in daycare, would Jesus be happy with the way she acted....

Her mother works at the same daycare as an administrative assistant and my granddaughter will sometimes be taken out of the classroom and sit outside with her mother. She will act badly even with her mother at daycare.

I have talked to her, punished her, allowed her great grandmother to talk to her. All the previous interventions work at home when she misbehaves. The next day at daycare it is usually the same. Please help.

Granddaughter in Daycare Dear Granddaughter, Studies indicate that there are children who do not require a nap during the day.

Therefore, maybe a more productive use of her nap time would be for the teacher to put on soft lighting and place her with quiet activities at a table. The excessive amount of attention that all are giving to this situation is feeding into her behavior. The adults around will realize that this method is best for all concerned since each child is individual.

Our lesson for church school

Notes From Union Hope This past Sunday we deviated from the standard church school lesson to take the time to teach some and remind others of what we as members of the Elder Lloyd T. Morgan National Primitive Baptist denomination believe and teach.

We felt it is necessary In light of the fact that there are many churches that describe themselves as ministries instead of churches who have no ties to anyone but themselves and sometimes you can’t be sure of what they believe or teach we are taking the time not to question what others teach but to

inform every member of our congregation so that they might know and understand what we believe and teach as biblical doctrine as a church and denomination.

Our youth minister Evangelist Vickie Johnson spoke to our youth encouraging them to avoid bad influence. The morning message was delivered by Pastor L.T. Morgan his subject was “Don’t lose sight of the prize” 2Tim.4:6-8.

Paul in what was probably his last letter tells Timothy that he was ready to be offered, to pour out his life as a drink offering to the Lord but he took consolation in the fact that he had fought a good fight, he had finished his course, he had kept the faith, but there was something beckoning him,

encouraging him, comforting him even at that hour, he knew that there was a crown of righteousness awaiting him.

Paul always kept in mind that there was a greater reward for believers in the life to come than this world could ever offer.

Some have traded the eternal rewards for temporary things, houses, money, fame and we leave all these things behind when we leave this world.

Many seem to be seeking the hand of God but not the face of God. Everyone want the blessings of this present world at the risk of losing the crown of life that Jesus promised to those that overcome the allure of this present world.

I now know why basketball fans call it"March Maddness." I have been baptized by basketball this month and it's only the second week of the month! Between the newspaper, Iphone, I-pad, ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN the magazine. I have had my fill of basketball.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I find it to be really interesting how the culture of basketball has developed.

On Sunday morning while preparing to go to church, I was watching the ESPN show-Outside The Lines.

One of the topics was how could Kentucky build a basketball program when so many of their players go to the professional ranks after just one year of college ball. I don't want to recap the entire program, but I do want to focus on one thing that the basketball coach from Kentucky said, "I just want them to play well in March."

This weekend you could watch a number of teams from several different conferences try to win the conference tournament so that they get a chance to play in the NCAA

Welcome to the weekend, Baaaby! Well, the kids have been out for a week now and I've come to the conclusion that parents need Spring Break more than kids. Let's face it, kids get Christmas and Summer vacation, numerous holidays, so it only seems fair.

Hardworking parents deserve a break today, but just like the wisdom of the 4 day,10 hour a day week, don't hold your breath,lol! On a not so serious note, I've had a great week. It started Saturday when I was able to surprise my wife Sheila with an awesome couples party for her Birthday. She thought we were going out for a 1 on 1 dinner at one of her favorite restaurants and then a movie. What Bobbi Kristina she got was her favorite friend couples, The Browns, Hobson's, Hoopers, Morrison's, plus our God Kids, Kamron, "The Magnificent" and Ariyah, "The Incredible Papaya" at Red Lobster. Each shared their special interactions with Sheila at my suggestion and cackled with laughter as I said, "I did not expect to hear much from the brothas at the table on that tip",lol. We climaxed the party by telling something God had done for each of us. Expecting a movie, she was then surprised with a romantic overnight stay on the12th floor of the DFW Westin, where you can see the planes take off from your room. Ya Know, I feel bad for Bobbi Kristina after the Oprah interview. You could tell she was shook, by her body language, but trying to hold it together. I hope she does not change her name to Kristina Houston, as she indicated considering dumping her first and she did nothing to deserve her situation! Last week we were tired of the Deion/Pilar Sander saga.

Now the Kobe/Vanessa Bryant divorce proceedings are heating up with Mrs Bryant accusing Mr. Bryant of having slept with105 women over their 10 year marriage. That's beyond wanting some variety, 105 sounds like a sex addict out of control. However I'll say it again, who knows what goes on behind closed doors. Dallas -Fort Worth meet my talents for this week: The Dallas Trojan My question was answered on Sunday evening at the MAC sports complex in Lewisville. The Dallas Trojans were playing in a tournament there. When I arrived at the complex I realized that the tournament featured 7th and 8th graders.

This was great because I love to watch young players before they get to the High school ranks.

But something else happened, I realized that March was the end of the high school basketball season and the start of the AAU basketball season. We have all heard the horror stories about AAU basketball, but I saw something and understood something different about AAU basketball. AAU is the providing the ground for young basketball players

around the country. AAU basketball is where every aspect of basketball is challenged. AAU is all tournament play, each week a player is tested mind, body, and heart! There was some great talent out there in Lewisville this week endTeam Texas, Texas Sun, Texas Lightlin, Houston Defenders, and of course the Dallas Trojan's, This team of Aubrey White, Lorenzo Bennett, Jeremiah Tatum Jr , Jaquan R o y, C a m e r o n H e n d e r son ,Daleon Ward, Jaylon Wooton, Laddrrian Burney, Bryston Cummings, Alex Erby, Coach Irvin Butler Jr and Coach Lang, stood up to the test and fought their way into the championship game.

These young talented young 8th graders have played 10 tournament games and have posted an impressive 8-2 record. Both losses coming in the championship game. After playing a thrilling game late Saturday night the Trojan were back at it again on Sunday morning. The Trojan won the early morning game and advanced to the afternoon game, this game was the true

test because the team seemed to be a little tired. The Trojan's dug themselves into a 22 point hole in the second half.

The Trojans hit big shot after big shot, they made great passes and played a firery defense that can only be described as a Lock Down.

And just like that these young guns erased 22 points down and won by 5 -76-71. It's was one of the greatest comebacks of the weekend! These young men are learning how to play tournament basketball. Their minds, body , and heart are being tested and molded for the next level. (High school) Although the Trojan have not won a tournament championship yet, they have played in the final in each of the tournaments they have played in so far! But the value of what they are learning will prove to be priceless later in their life!!

Keep learning how to play Trojans I'm sure we will be watching y'all play for a few years to come!!

Call it déjà vu, vindication or just a plain old comeback and YES even Back-to-Back.

There are plenty of words and phrases to describe Kimball’s victory over Yates this past weekend.

Silencing harsh critics and shocking the entire high school Basketball world.

Kimball done all of that Saturday when they became Back to Back 4A State Champions.

The beauty of this victory is that, these are students from different social settings of life, that is what makes this victory that much more impressive.

Speaking with Coach Royce “Snoop” Johnson after that 78-75 win over Yates, he speaks highly of his squad and looking at the passion he shared out on the court with his team tells it all. He shares a personal relationship with these boys and lets them know that yes, I want you to win but I want you to love yourself first then the game.

Coach said, yearlong this group of kids has found a way to step-up. This time they found a way to win with only 33 seconds left on the clock, and let Dallas Kimball message ring loud and

clear in the ears and hearts JY Lions fans in Houston’s third ward. Kimball left Austin with tons of confidence and the opportunity to gloat—even though the players chose not to after the game.

Knowing that they are the 2-time defending state champions allowed them to write their own tickets without saying a word...

Kimball used a greatly assembled crew of seniors, juniors and sophomores to dismantle the Lions of Jack Yates, with Torrey Henry #10, two time MVP Shannon Lilly #3 (who scored 9 of his 27 points in fourth quarter) and Darian Hancock #15 all made big shots in the last 33 seconds of the game but we would be re-miss to not mention All-American, All-State and All-world Keith Frazier who led the first half highlights and scoring. In the second half down by five, Henry hit a three pointer to bring Kimball’s lead to 75 Yates 73 with 29 seconds left in the game.

Recovering from a missed free throw, Torrey Henry took a pass from Darian Hancock and made a 20-foot 3 point shot right in front of his coach and entire team, which shot provided the turning moment of the game.

What was especially sweet and sentimental about this victory is the

From a major wreck to a major check

Suddenly, my car spins out of control, and my vision goes blank.

By the time I regain consciousness…

I hear, “Hurry up! Get him out of there before the car catches on fire!”

Several men yank open my door and pull me out of the smoking wreckage! Blood ran down my face, and my body throbbed in pain. Soon, the ambulance arrived and rushed me to Methodist Hospital.

As I laid in the emergency room loaded down with tubes, needles, and a neck brace; a nurse explained how a truck nearly killed me.

She said, “You’ve got fractured ribs, spinal damage, and a punctured lung; so how can you be in such good spirits?” I just let her know… I trusted God to pull me through.

To some folks, my wreck seems like another unfortunate incident. But when you develop a closer relationship with The Holy Spirit, it gives you wisdom to… SEE BEYOND THE OBVIOUS. The “obvious” is… I had a wreck. But why? Check out this mind-blowing answer!

Consider this.

Satan attacks me with A MAJOR WRECK… WEEKS before I launch A MAJOR PROJECT… a magazine project that could draw folks closer to Christ!

I had NEVER been in a wreck.

But coincidentally, right when I’m launching my first MAJOR project for Christ, I endure my first MAJOR wreck.

So basically, Satan used the wreck as a weapon to stop me from promoting the Gospel! But what does the Bible say? “No weapon formed against me shall prosper!” Isaiah 54:17 Later that evening, the doctor entered the room with a smile. The doctor said my injuries should heal in a few months!

So I was prescribed some pain pills, and medical staff helped me out of bed. Low and behold… I March 16, 2012

COULD WALK despite my injuries!!! Praise the Lord…. I was being discharged!

A male nurse asked if I wished to be carried out in a wheelchair.

But I said….

“IF GOD GAVE ME THE STRENGTH TO WALK OUTTA HERE… THEN I’M WALKIN’ OUT!” So like Mike Tyson after a boxing match, I raised my hands towards the sky in victory, and I painfully strolled out the emergency room. With the Lord’s help, I was truly a conqueror. I beat Satan. Satan didn’t want you to get this article. Satan didn’t want you to get this message… but here goes….

“One minute, you could be doing your daily routine & the next minute… an ambulance could be rushing you from an accident scene!

Trust me. I’ve always been healthy.

Never broken a bone.

Irish Roast Beef with Guinness Au Jus Ingredients:

2 pounds boneless beef chuck roast 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle Irish stout beer (e.g.

Guinness®) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary 1/2 teaspoon ground thyme 1/2 teaspoon steak seasoning 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 pound small round red potatoes salt and ground black pepper to taste

Prepare 1. Place the beef in a roasting pan and pour the beer over the meat. Cover the pan with plastic wrap, and marinate in the refrigerator overnight, turning once.

2.

Preheat an oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).

3. Remove the roast from the stout and pat dry. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Brown the roast on all sides. Set the browned roast on plate.

4. Crush the rosemary, thyme, steak seasoning, and pepper in a mortar and pestle. Add the minced garlic and stir to make a paste. Spread the paste over the outside of the roast. Place the roast back into the roasting pan with the stout and cover loosely with foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours. Add the potatoes to the roasting pan and leave off the foil to let the roast get a crispy coating.

5. Bake to your desired degree of doneness, or an internal temperature of 145 degrees F (65 degrees C) for medium, about another hour. Remove from the oven, cover with a doubled sheet of aluminum foil, and allow to rest in a warm area 20 minutes before slicing.

6. Pour the pan juices into a pot and bring to a boil over medium heat. Simmer until the juices have reduced and thickened, about 10 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Strain the juices and serve with the beef and roasted potatoes. Cover and chill at least 2 hours.
